"And you shouldn't trust anyone here. But you know that already." "Not even you, Chishiya?"

Despite your smile and playful tone he knew you were nervous. It was impossible to hide anything from him, he knew you too well.

Although he didn't see a reason for you to be stressed. It was obvious to him that, with the right strategy, you could get through this game together, unharmed. Just like you always did.

It didn't even really matter who the Jack was, or just how many people were going to die that night. You'd survive, and that's all that mattered.

And so, round after round, with the number of players rapidly declining, the two of you continued to try and figure out a solution, always relying on one another. Chishiya rarely showed any emotions, but he found comfort in the fact that he finally had someone trustworthy by his side. It was especially important during a hearts game.

At first you tried to stick together, but after a while, and multiple deaths, it became clear that, if you wanted to win, you'd have to team up with at least a few other remaining players. Even if the risk was high.

Against better judgment you decided to separate, hoping that way you could increase the number of players that would join you. You did most of the talking, while Chishiya stayed put, quietly observing.

From an outsider's perspective it might have seemed like he wasn't participating in the game at all, completely unbothered by his surroundings or maybe even unaware of them. Maybe he's given up entirely.

But you knew him, you knew he was working hard. Hell, he could have figured out the solution by now. You certainly wouldn't be surprised if he did, and you definitely wouldn't be worried if he didn't tell you immediately. Being together for a while now, you knew he always had a reason for everything.

"So what is it?" His silence confused you. You've never had to ask him before, in previous rounds he'd tell you your symbol immediately, and you did the same for him. This time he remained silent, staring at you with a blank expression. "Diamond." He finally responded, quickly turning around and disappearing in his cell.

Without thinking much, you accepted his answer and started walking toward the cell door. You had a feeling he knew more than he was willing to share, but you also knew that pressuring him would not help. And so you gave your answer, like you've done countless times already.

As the next round started, Chishiya made his way to the main floor, where you'd meet every hour to share your symbols and discuss your strategy for the rest of the game. Soon he was joined by the few players that were still alive. Your cell however remained closed.

It wasn't the way Chishiya wanted to find the Jack of hearts, he really thought you'd get through this together, like you always had. He gave you the right answer afterall. Unfortunately for you, it was impossible to hide anything from him. He knew you too well.

i know the warrior nun writers can write a romance better than most tv writers simply because of the “my job and my pleasure” line. i went feral the first time i heard that because imagine having a slow burn ship that is still good and still a slow burn even though at the beginning of season two, one of the characters is out here confessing something like that with her full chest. and that’s after one of the most well-written arguments i’ve ever seen on screen.

btw about Neil Gaiman I periodically agree with the 'Neil Gaiman is annoying' stuff bc I feel like both he and Amanda Palmer seem like people who I would go insane stuck in a room with bc we have very different ideas about art and suchlike. and I also do think that the career trajectory he's on lately is cynically redoing his greatest hits and pretending that was the dream all along when it clearly was not. which is at best meh.

as far as I can tell by far the most common complaint about Neil Gaiman is "Snow, Glass, Apples is problematic/gross/it's got incest and rape and frames the child as the aggressor"

which strikes me as a weird complaint to pull out of a 40 year body of work tbh when that short story is pretty clearly coming from a place of 'how far can I push this'. like you don't have to like the story. I don't really like the story. but it is. a horror story.

like and this is the thing with particularly 90s alt horror right? a lot of the interest is in transgression and sitting in the worst possible perspective and seeing what happens if you pull those strings. like I really like Clive Barker for example but there's a good chunk of his short stories that I'm like I'm not picking up what you're putting down Clive this seems Kinda Off. but that willingness to write some trite or Bad Message horror fiction that doesn't land is imo a side effect of being willing to try writing uncomfortable and unpleasant fiction at all. which is what horror is for, among other things, it's for creating discomfort as a form of catharsis or engagement.

like I am not a huge fan of the type of sex-horror that pops up in a lot of Gaiman's work and other contemporary horror writers - to me I don't find it upsetting or horny it just ends up feeling kind of edgy and tryhard - but I'm also a bit like. it does seem like a lot of people's beef with Neil Gaiman is that In The 90s He Was A Horror Writer

and this approach to Problematic Horror in Snow, Glass, Apples I find kind of microcosmic of how The Discourse often approaches art in this kind of 1:1 way. if you write a story which seems to line up with rape apologia it can only be because you agree with it. if you write a story about transphobia you're a transphobe. if you write a story that makes me genuinely uncomfortable you're attacking me.

but artwork, especially art like horror that's not necessarily trying to provoke enjoyment as its main response, is necessarily hit and miss. and if what you're shooting for is discomfort then whether it works, falls flat or goes too far incredibly depends on your audience. and making good art - as in art that makes its audience think, art that opens the audience up to discomfort and catharsis and sticks with them and changes them - requires the space to experiment and tbh the space to fuck up. like they aren't all going to be winners and they certainly aren't all going to work for you as a singular audience.

personally I don't see the appeal of Snow, Glass, Apples, less cause it's nasty and more cause it's hack. ooh an edgy monstrous version of a fairy tale where there's lots of rape and cannibalism? you're soooo original Neil. but like. that's fine. I don't really vibe with like 70% of Neil Gaiman stuff I've read but I still like Neil Gaiman because the stuff that works for me really works for me.

idk I think there's a lot of folk on this website who shouldn't interact with horror cause they clearly aren't interested in being horrified. that's not everyone who dislikes Snow, Glass, Apples, but it's a real undercurrent to a lot of the criticism and tbh this kinda vibe is shit for art. making standout art What Is Good also requires being ready to make art which stands out for the wrong reasons. sometimes they'll be the same art to different people.

this is an anthology with each arc following a different couple—a friend specifically rec’d the third story to me thinking I’d like it, and They Were Right (I actually started the first story and dropped it because it didn’t really grab me)

ch 32-49 is about a guy in university who puts a lot of effort into being Popular™️ but it’s all an act. so he throws away a gift he got, and then realizes a classmate saw him, then freaks out and tries to get close to his classmate to find out What Is This Guy’s Deal. (btw if tryhard popular types sound appealing, read partition which is this exact premise but with office ladies who are Worse About It [affectionate])

anyway the dynamic ends up being very

I actually ended up really liking the main character because I’m endeared by tryhard popular types who are actually pretty diligent. he’s a bit of a jerk who’s constantly playing social chess and judging other people, but overall he’s a decent guy. also it’s fun watching him have to put in so much effort and get so stressed out about a guy who’s whole deal is about going at his own pace and not really caring about all that lol. overall it’s a fun & quick read, I really enjoyed it

hey random thought but I was looking at the overseer description on the rain world wiki and it said that the green overseers only spawn in outer expanse and subterranean and that got me thinking

unlike spearmaster who had srs watching over them through the red overseer (until pebbles zap it outta existence) Hunter didn’t have any overseer watching over them

That means that Nsh wouldn’t know for sure if Hunter succeed in the mission because Hunter never made it back home, either succumbing to the rot or passing on through the void sea and Siggy wasn’t watching his cat unlike Suns

Nsh probably thought that once Moon wakes up, she could message the entire local group again however, Moon’s collapse left her in a state where she couldn’t communicate with the other iterators even after her revival

I mean, to cut slack for Nsh. Pebbles did put the entire region into lockdown (see five pebbles dialogue for when gourmand first enters the cann) so he probably couldn’t get in with Hunter but still

from Nsh’s perspective moon’s fate is uncertain. His hunter’s fate is uncertain.

Maybe he saw the little messenger going through subterranean which meant that Hunter probably succeeded. Maybe the last he has seen if his slugcat was before the Hunter entered the region and Hunter hasn’t returned home yet nor did Moon showed any signs of activity.

Maybe his plan worked and the keys were delivered. He wouldn’t know for sure…

basically all I’m saying is that Nsh feels like the person who would had definitely thrown more (hopefully non-cancerous) slugcats towards Moon instead of tossing Hunter and the angstiest option for why he didn’t was because he thought his plan fail as Hunter will never go home in the base game and Moon couldn’t communicate her revive

UGH YES!!! i hc that you can still see sig’s overseers sometimes in subterranean/outer expanse is because she’s still…well, desperately searching. at first for a sign of hunter, and then for a sign of moon when he realizes hunter’s probably not returning, or perhaps a way to get into the facility to see if his plan even worked.

part of the reason i think hunter was so sick is just because by the time sig made her, his facility wasn’t in the best shape, and he was rushing, desperate to save moon. in the note she sends her it literally says “excuse the unorthodox delivery method, equipment eroding etc etc”. i truly do not believe sig is “bad at making slugcats” or “didn’t follow suns’ instructions” because his dialogue PROVES THAT HE CAME UP WITH THE CONCEPT FIRST. (sorry that shit grinds my gears when ppl brush sig off as either stupid or malicious when it comes to hunter) because like…this mission is SO important to her. why the hell would he make hunter sick, therefore limiting her time to get to moon and possibly causing her death before she could reach her goal?

hunter’s last wish in the void sea is to be back in sig’s arms. if he were truly malicious/didn’t show respect for her messengers, why would hunter want to return? so yeah, seeing his overseer out in the outer expanse, searching for hunter or a sign of moon being alive just ;-;

i don’t rlly think she sent more messengers after that, mainly bc he knows any slugcats he makes after hunter will likely meet the same fate due to the erosion of her equipment/the fact he thinks “there will be nothing left of moon by the time one is ready”. sig just breaks my heart because she tried and tried and tried, reaching out as far as he could, and still never knew if his plan even worked. i’m gonna stop here bc if i keep talking i am going to be writing a goddamn essay that would be better than anything i ever turned in in university LMFAO i have so many goddamn Feelings about no significant harassment rain world.

also me n ghost are actually doing an rp that’s kind of like this lmfao, and in it the reason hunter gets sick is because sig basically works herself so hard she ends up damaging his structure and the sudden power failure/shutdown affects his experiments. (obviously that has no basis in canon and is more just us writing fanfiction about what could have possibly happened)
