here's something short and goofy for you guys bc this song has been stuck in my head all morning.
Tumblr media
“So, Eddie?” Steve asks while he, Robin, and Eddie are lounging around Family Video on a slow Tuesday afternoon.
“Yes, Stevie dear?” “Where did the ‘Big Boy’ thing come from?”
Steve watches as every bit of Eddie freezes under his gaze.
“Uh..”
“Yeah, I’d like to know too, what’s up with that Munson?” Robin says, leaning forward on the counter beside Steve, pushing all of her right side into Steve’s left.
Poor Eddie.
“Oh, uh, well…” Eddie’s brow furrows for a moment before something seemingly comes to him in a moment. “You know how loud the rumor mill can be, Steve-o.”
“Whattya mean?” He knows what he means, he just wants to see what Eddie will say. He also knows It’s gotta be a tortuous question for the metalhead, especially one who’s crush is the one asking him.
That was the other thing; after Eddie’s accidental pain-med induced schmoozing of Steve and the prompt forgettening of ever saying anything, Steve (and Robin) had come to the conclusion that he’s super into Eddie too.
Now it’s just a matter of getting Eddie to admit it, and having fun flirting and making him squirm a little in the meantime.
“Well, the phrase itself is from a song, but you do know your lovely conquests would talk, right?” The blush on his cheeks just makes him look cuter.
“And you believed them?” Robin states more than asks.
“Well there’s no way I’d ever know one way or the other!” Eddie laughs, his cheeks darkening.
Ignoring the myriad of things he could say to that, Steve instead asks “What song?”
“Huh? Oh, uhm, it’s from this random tape that Wayne picked up on the road a couple years ago. Has this weird art on the cover of some guy and like, skeletons and stuff? Dan something? It’s all yellow-y orange and blue..”
“That sounds so familiar…” Robin mumbles when Steve asks, “How does it go?”
“What?”
“The song.”
“Uh…” Eddie zones off into the distance and starts mumbling to himself.
Robin is still mumbling to herself too, “That sounds so familiar, what the hell?”
Eddie presumably finds the lyrics then, because he starts singing. “Big Boy, real cool, you can tell he’s no one’s fool, And he tries so hard to come off like a star.” Eddie starts dancing around in front of the counter, “You can tell by the way he combs his hair, by the cocky grin and that moody stare. By the way he leans and juts out his hip...” He sings, pointing at how Steve is doing exactly that.
Steve laughs, waving him off, “Okay, okay, I get it! You can st—”
“Elfman!” Robin calls out suddenly.
Steve and Eddie share a look. “Who’s an elf?”
“The Dan guy from your song, Elfman? Was his last name Elfman?”
Eddie snaps his fingers at her, “That’s it! Danny Elfman!” “The guy from Oingo Boingo!”
There are a few beats of silence.
“Don’t look at me like that, he’s the singer in Oingo Boingo! My parents love their stuff, and they did that song in Weird Science!”
“Which song?”
“..Weird Science.” she says as if that was obvious.
Something clicks in Steve’s head at the name, too. “Wait, I know I've seen that name somewhere else...” He rounds the counter and toward the shelf he knows the tape he's thinking of lives; it’s a goofy movie, he’s watched it before on some of his long solo shifts and it’s honestly kind of grown on him.
He grabs up the first copy he sees, one of the Family Video plastic clamshells, and brings it back to the counter, popping the tape into their tape player.
The opening credits start up, and at the title card: “Oh hey, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure! I love Pee Wee!” Eddie says, excitedly jumping up to sit on the counter in front of the TV (and Steve).
“Yeah you do..” Robin mumbles.
“Shut up,” Steve grumbles, elbowing her a bit harder than necessary, “Look.” he points up to the text on the screen.
“Damn, this guy’s everywhere!”
“‘Music composed by Danny Elfman’. Holy shit! Good memory, Dingus!”
“Thanks! Now what is this about Eddie loving Pee Wee?”

(warning: contains strong language)
reasoning behind songs under the cut!
these are a bit of a mess and are anywhere from "viking" to "ruby" to "navigator" to "kinda sapphire-ish??" to "one's feelings about the other" to "both of them" to "general vibe". there's also a few songs that got cut but still kinda hit the vibe that i might talk abt some other time??? i dunno man this playlist was a catastrophe to make. ANYWAY
Ruler Of Everything: "you understand mechanical hands are the ruler of everything, ruler of everything, i'm the ruler of everything in the end" // Viking. i don't really need to elaborate here, it's just Viking.
Gratitude: "but when i think of you, and what you've done to me, you took away my hope, you took away my fantasy, i once had lots of pride, the world was in my hands, i lived way at the top in castles made of sand" // gestures in the vague direction of Viking and Ruby. man i don't even know what's happening over there. this is a bit of a Recency Bias song bc i first heard it like right before lore really kicked off so it was fresh in my mind
Monsters Nearby: "only get so far putting off those dreams of yours [..] thinking of all these strange things when you should rest, it's hard to sleep like this when there's monsters nearby" // Ruby! and, like, of course i'm going to add the song that keeps making me think of the "You cannot sleep, there are monsters nearby" message. "And that voice behind the polarized advice can be the same" is about Viking, though.
New Invention: "oh i can't say no, i'm losing control! i'm having bad dreams, and nothing you can do will keep the bad dreams away from me until i fall asleep. bad dreams! despite your good intentions, that girl is like an architect and i am just the new invention!" // Ruby and Viking! if i did an animatic to any song off this playlist it would be New Invention. goddamn. (also, tViking's design reminds me a bit of eFalse, and roenais's Empires animation to this song lives in my head rent-free)
Sleepwalk: "bad thoughts give me bad dreams and my bad dreams make me get up and walk. bad thoughts give me bad dreams and my bad dreams make me sleepwalk." // oh my god Ruby and Sapphire. the ominous mood encapsulates everything about Sapphire to me, especially before we knew who Saph actually is and she was just "Ruby sleepwalks and leaves ominous signs". it's dark and foreboding and i love it.
Hello, Again: "find a mechanist, a mechanism, working one-by-one! with a busted up database, i'm losing the chase, but i'll say hello again, hello, just who have i become?" // the whole conversation about fixing things, and how that's become a reoccurring theme with Sapphire as well - switching from Ruby being the broken one to Viking being the one needing to be fixed. plus the whole "Ruby and Viking meeting across loops" thing - hello again, hello, just who can i become?
Put Me to Work: "set me off, see what i'm worth! turn me on, i go berserk! i don't care if i get hurt! no, i don't care, just put me to work! [..] i will replace you, replace you, replace you [..] and i won't care when they get hurt, no i don't care, just put me to work!" // Viking is, uh. a lot. hyperfocused to the point of self-destruction. this does bleed over to Ruby too, though, what with zir being desperate to be something Viking won't throw away when he stops seeing zir as useful and Navigator's warning of "don't let him break you". i guess the real question is: would Viking care if they get hurt?
Reliable Narrator: "did you forget that i am not a pacifist? the scar we'll earn from that will be well worth it. did you-- hypnosis, bring roses, don't blow this [..] the bruising will be worth the freedom i have earned from letting everything burn!" // basically every Ruby song on here is "Ruby is going through it". there's a tension here. very fun to have this song on here though considering Sapphire sign "I am a unreliable narrator, am I not?"
Crossing the Rubicon: "fill me out a prescription for this existential dread, i woke up into a nightmare and i'm hoping that you'll take me back to bed [..] fill me out a prescription, can you free me from this curse? i woke up inside your compass and you're navigating us from east to worst [..] something's got to give, we've gone too far to turn back" // this has been a Viking song for ages but never made it onto my dViking playlist for some reason. it works better here, i think. there's going to be a tipping point where you cross the point of no return.
Younger: "try not to lose sight of the mission! it never hurts to give thanks to the broken bones you had to use to build your ladder. moment close at hand, half of you will never understand, and it doesn't really matter. [..] it never hurts to give thanks to the navigator, even when he's spitting out random numbers." // Certified Navigator Moment as suggested by Charm!! this is one of the songs i can't put into words the emotions i have about it but it's just... a lot. "It never hurts to give thanks to the broken bones" is about everybody Viking is going to burn through to get to his goal, and that kinda ties into Navigator trying to intercept i guess??? i dunno man i don't work here <- literally made this playlist
Up, Up & Away: "how many lives can a guy buy? [..] can't erase or save face, what will they think when they hear my voice on the tapes? skies open, wheels in motion, no going back, no, i've chosen!" // Viking!! aaaauughhhhhhhhh. what will you do to get to where you need to go? once again linking into the we've gone too far to turn back thing from Crossing the Rubicon. y'know, in case you can't tell that i think Viking's going to do something awful to reach his ambitions.
Asking For It: "power through the point of no return, famously deranged, all the same hope you change, if the worm is gonna turn, it's none of my concern" // somebody absolutely rips into Viking. probably Ruby. "if the worm is gonna turn it's none of my concern" is said by Viking in this context though. famous last words before Ruby (or Sapphire?) decks him. fun fact: this was one of the first songs i associated with tViking specifically, back during the first lore scene, but i went "ehhh???" on it. then we got to see a bit more of him and... yeah. this guy is asking for it.
Aren't We All Running: [instrumental] // there's a couple instrumentals on here because of talking to Solar about how character playlists rarely have instrumentals and i wanted to have a couple of rest points. i love the slow build here and the overall mood. montage music.
Hourglass: "i can't fix it, is this where i give in? i'm falling through the hourglass, and i don't think i'll ever make it back [..] turn the page, look back at what you wrote, do you still feel the same?" // shoutouts to Rubyco Themself for namechecking this song! it's real good. someone let Ruby out of his BOX he needs HELP
Hydrogenuine: "11 is the number i seem assigned to, inversions of an opposite truth aligns you, directions like the back of your hand will guide you, i am simply here to assist and remind you" // this is kindasorta a Navigator song, kindasorta just The Situation. i cannot properly explain this one, it just Is. what if we kept running into each other in different universes and timelines but something broke this time and now we're trying to fix it
Triangles: [instrumental] // iiii wanna animaaaate to this sooooongggg hope this heeeeelps
HOME: "every road leads back to where i belong! and i can see, when i'm on my own it's the place i can call home! my mind creates a new world that is so disordered, i proclaim myself king and pope! DID, we are in 3 but we're getting along well, i'm glad to be the leader of the wolf pack!" // Viking is so incredibly not okay. just, like, in general. had fun with the DID lyric though considering Viking and Ruby's plotlines are "other versions of themselves are hijacking their bodies" lmao. love unconventional plurality.
Everybody Gets A Piece: "did you honestly think it might've been, might've been me? and all this while, did you think of me? you know, all this while we were pure potential energy dreaming [..] don't ask, you'll never get! you never asked, so you never got nothing! did you get all you wanted from me?" // this one's a bit looser but the vibes are there. the "don't ask, you'll never get" bit is Viking and Sapphire constantly talking in circles mixed with Viking using everybody as tools and that potentially including Ruby. UM. ALSO MAYBE A NAVIGATOR SONG NOW TBH. I MADE THIS BEFORE TONIGHT'S STREAM.
Crazy = Genius: "and i said: if crazy equals genius, if crazy equals genius! then i'm a fucking arsonist, i'm a rocket scientist! if crazy equals genius! you can set yourself on fire, but you're never gonna burn, burn, burn! you can set yourself on fire, but you're never gonna learn, learn, learn, hey!" // peak Viking. LOOK WE'VE EVEN GOT THE FIRE THEME IN HERE! we love an unhinged inventor with an obsession with fire metaphors
No Sleep Tonight: "and from that height we'll leak the lies, and unveil the damaged skies, 'cause we can't quite stomach this! [..] i still can't comprehend a beginning or an end, no i can't quite stomach this! all i'm trying to say is: you're not getting any sleep tonight!" // more hypothetical Future Speculation stuff mixing in with how generally Screwed reality is for Viking/Navigator and Ruby/Sapphire. also the sleepless theming that's clinging to Ruby through all of this.
The Last Of The Real Ones: "you were too good to be true, gold plated - but what's inside you, but what's inside you? [..] i will protect you, i will protect you, just tell me tell me tell me i- i am the only one, even if it's not true, even if it's not true" // WHAT IF YOU WERE SIBLINGS AND KEPT FINDING EACH OTHER IN EVERY UNIVERSE BUT THINGS KEPT GOING WRONG
The Devil You Know: "nobody knows you better than your demons, so, dance with the devil you know or go home."

What is Richie and Eddie’s song? Like, ya know how couples have that one song for them? I'm just wondering what it is. Also, since Eddie is trans, do Richie and Eddie tie the knot legally because Eddie is still considered a female in the eyes of the law? Or did they wait until gay marriage was legal in the States?
Hmmm!!! I have a pretty long playlist for them but I've never thought about picking a song in that light.... I think some of my favorites that would probably work in that context would be "We Close Our Eyes" by Oingo Boingo, "You Might Think" by The Cars, or "This Must Be The Place" by Talking Heads, which I was actually originally going to have the lyrics in the most recent ep since that is what Eddie's supposed to be listening to but I thought it was better without...
As for the second question, I'll answer through the lens of the baby au rather than out of the blue bc they actually have very different continuities .... I think they probably wait, but I bet they joke about it being a loophole they could exploit

Thoughts on the accusations against Danny Elfman
Tumblr media
About six month ago two different women came forward with accusations of sexual harassment from Danny Elfman, some of which date back to when he was the lead singer for the indie rock band, Oingo Boingo. Some headlines distorted the harassment to "sexual assault" which makes it sound like he committed r8p3. But that's not even what he was being accused of. According to Rolling Stone magazine one of the two women had been previously paid off to stop her accusations but Danny Elfman (or his people) had stopped paying so she got vindictive. The other made virtually identical claims. I am NOT saying he is innocent. I am just proposing why I think he MIGHT be innocent. I know it's important to believe women and there IS a high chance he did commit these acts of harassment. The simple fact is that as far as rock stars go Danny Elfman is... boring. His music is incredible. He has a great voice but he doesn't do tabloid level rocker cliche nonsense. The man doesn't do drugs. He doesn't drink. And he doesn't smoke. I know that bad people can keep clean-living habits but we're talking about someone who literally sang a song to mock, call-out, and shame those who sexually exploit and groom under-age girls in Hollywood. The song is called "Little Girls." And it is very gross and uncomfortable in how it draws attention to the sexual exploitation in Hollywood. This doesn't feel like someone who would commit those acts. Danny Elfman is seventy-years-old and there's absolutely no evidence to support the accusations against him. They're just hearsay dating back at least twenty-five-years. The fact hat the accusations came out roughly around the same time as Danny Elfman's annual Nightmare before Christmas concerts at The Hollywood Bowl suggests to me that it was a strategic attempt to hurt him and his long-standing relationship with Disney / Marvel. The timing feels suspicious. So we have no evidence. A history of Danny Elfman being vocally against sexual abuse and exploitation. And Danny Elfman's history of being a "boring" rocker (No drinking, smoking, or drug use). Yes, Danny Elfman did pay off the first accuser in a sort of blackmail situation but only because he is seventy-years-old and did not want his career ruined or blemished with an accusation that could destroy his affiliation with Disney and Nightmare before Christmas (which is practically his opera). I admit to a bias in defense of Danny Elfman but something about the accusations does not feel right, especially since it has been six months and nothing new has come of it since Danny Elfman dismissed the accusations as false.

Songs I Think Stranger Things Characters Would Listen To (The Party + Erica: Edition)
Note: For these lists, I tried to include songs that we haven't really seen in canon for the characters. We know that Max likes "Running Up That Hill", we know Mike likes "Small Town Boy", and we know Will likes "Boys Don't Cry". I love those songs and they are included in these playlists but I'm more interested in using music as a way to expand on and flesh out these characters.
I have also linked to Spotify playlists for each character. If you agree or disagree with any of my picks, please let me know!
Will Byers
Tumblr media
Will has inherited a lot of his music taste from Jonathan but it's evolved in a way that's distinctly his own. Unlike his brother, Will's music tends to be more pop-focused. He likes new wave, post-punk, and moody songs that he can listen to while he paints. I think Will really pays attention to the lyrics of the music he listens to and it serves as a kind of therapy for him.
In Between Days by The Cure
Elegia by New Order
Mad World by Tears For Fears
Lost in the Supermarket by The Clash
It's A Sin by Pet Shop Boys
Major Tom (Coming Home) by Peter Schilling
Without You by David Bowie
This Charming Man by The Smiths
Mike Wheeler
Tumblr media
Mike is always trying to appear slightly cooler than he is. He likes classic rock in a very Eric Forman way (if that makes any sense). By the time he joins Hellfire Club, he's trying to emulate Eddie's style and music taste because he just thinks Eddie's that cool. At his core, Mike enjoys sappy songs about love, life, and heartbreak because he's a dork who likes to jam out in his room.
Never Surrender by Corey Hart
Dream On by Aerosmith
Suburbia by Pet Shop Boys
Punishment For Love by Bronski Beat
Hold Me Now by Thompson Twins
Hells Bells by AC/DC
Summer of '69 by Bryan Adams
Eighteen by Alice Cooper
El "Jane" Hopper
Tumblr media
El is just finding her own music taste. She’s only been shown music by her friends or Hopper so she picks and chooses what she likes. Mostly that’s a lot of pop music and ballads. She also watches a lot of MTV so her taste tends to skew pretty mainstream. When Max teaches her how to put together mixtapes her’s tend to be pretty upbeat or dramatic depending on her mood. While she’s contemplating her relationship with Mike she listens to a lot of gaudy break-up ballads.
Hey Mickey by Toni Basil
She Bop by Cyndi Lauper
The Promise by When In Rome
Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler
Talk Talk by Talk Talk
Could've Been by Tiffany
Destination Unkown by Missing Persons
Two of Hearts by Stacey Q
Max Mayfield
Tumblr media
Max’s music taste is kind of hard to pinpoint. It’s really a grab bag of pop, rock, experimental, and softer punk. The only way I can describe it is like “spunky”. There are also moments when the music she listens to becomes more introspective and brooding. In “Runaway Max” she mentions liking The Go-Go’s and The Beach Boys.
Dreaming by Blondie
We Got The Beat by The Go-Go’s
Kids In America by Kim Wilde
The Girl U Want by DEVO
Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes
Hounds of Love by Kate Bush
California Dreamin by The Beach Boys
White Wedding - Pt.1 by Billy Idol
Dustin Henderson
Tumblr media
Dustin is the nerdiest of nerdiest teenage boys (we wore a "Weird Al" t-shirt on his first day of high school I mean come on). He thinks that "Weird Al" is a genius for his use of parody and critique of pop culture (which, he's not wrong). He's always liked metal but it's only become more prominent for him since hanging out with Eddie so much. Being in Hellfire though has caused him to be more stealthy about his love for novelty records and one-hit wonders. He makes mixtapes full of love songs and saves up his money to send them to Suzie in Utah.
She Blinded Me With Science by Thomas Dolby
Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen
The Safety Dance by Men Without Hats
Weird Science by Oingo Boingo
I’m Gonna Be by The Proclaimers
As The World Falls Down by David Bowie
Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley
I Lost On Jeopardy by “Weird Al” Yankovic
Lucas Sinclair
Tumblr media
Lucas’ music taste is pretty diverse. He likes rock music but not as hard as Mike and Dustin’s taste. I imagine he’s picked up a lot of soul and r&b music from his parents, specifically his mom. In “Lucas On The Line” Lucas is introduced to Run-D.M.C. and really takes a shine to it so I imagine he’d be listening to some rap and hip hop. My qualifications for my picks were “would Lucas sing this infront of his bedroom mirror while using a hairbrush as a microphone?”.
Another One Bites the Dust by Queen
Walk This Way by Run-D.M.C.
Dirty Diana by Micheal Jackson
Juke Box Hero by Foreigner
Easy Lover by Philip Bailey & Phil Collins
Everything She Wants by Wham!
You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine by Lou Rawls
Never Too Much by Luther Vandross
Erica Sinclair
Tumblr media
Erica is eleven so she tends to gravitate towards music that's popular or that she hears on the radio. Pop and R&B make up most of her cassette collection. The music she likes tends to be very upbeat and kick-ass (these songs are all bangers so she has amazing taste). Like Lucas, she also does dorky lipsyncing in her bedroom but unlike him, she's never been caught.
Head to Toe by Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam
I Feel For You by Chaka Khan
What Have You Done For Me Lately by Janet Jackson
Got to Be Real by Cheryl Lynn
Let’s Hear It For the Boy by Denise Williams
Rhythm of The Night by DeBarge
Cool It Now by New Edition
Swept Away by Diana Ross

What do you think Saiou’s favorites are? Songs, colors, foods, seasons, school subjects, etc?
And on the topic of favorites, what’s your favorite Saiou art that you’ve done?
ooooo this is fun, i love thinking about character's interests.
okay so music- i don't have a solid enough idea about them and music to say a specific song, but i can list bands/genres instead. -Shuichi likes metal, rock, and punk music mostly- with like a touch of chill indie. bands that come to mind i think he's like are Black Veil Brides, Three Doors Down, and Miss May I. (i don't know enough chill indie bands to list any) -Kokichi's more all over the map. he likes rock, indie, jazz, heavy metal, dark academia playlists, whatever the fuck will wood is doing- all sorts of just totally random crap. he'd like anything from Oingo Boingo to Fish in a Birdcage to Steam Powered Giraffes to Half-Alive. just so long as it gives him brain worms.
Colors are much easier to talk about. i think Shuichi's favorite color is Yellow, and Kokichi's is red.
Foods is harder for me cause i'm a stupid picky eater (adhd go brrrrr) so i myself don't know alot of food flavors. but i can safely say due to my Kokichi having a dulled sense of taste, he ends up making alot of foods and snack for himself that have such potent flavors so he can taste them, and other people can't stand what horrible concoctions he comes up with.
seasons? they both love the fall. they are fall enjoyers through and through (Kokichi even smells like fall- it's only half on purpose tho)
and the school one- idk about Shuichi, maybe literacy? but Kokichi? he's a STEM kid, fucking nerd.

Hello, my lovely! totally ignore this if it's too much to ask again, but! all the celebration thingies are so cool and I couldn't resist. I was wondering if I could make another request, for Gentileschi - music & paintings. Since you added the Dead Man's Party album cover to my moldboard, I was wondering if I could request that song for it, please? also because it's the eve of the Danny Elfman concert, and in the mood to celebrate! once again, thank you SO MUCH and congrats on your milestone, I'm excited for many more milestones to come! much love, and lots of hugs! x
visit the art gallery
hello my love!! it's not too much at all - you can make as many requests as you would like! 🥰☺️🥰☺️
and omg I'm so so so excited for you!! I hope the concert is just FANTASTIC and everything you hoped it would be and more!! you'll have to tell me all about it ☺️☺️
so, full disclosure: I had never listened to any Oingo Boingo before this (I knew you liked them, but I had only ever known Danny Elfman from his work on films) so this was a new experience for me! this song is super fun though, and i have a few artworks that I think really match the vibes 💙
as soon as the song started playing and I read the lyrics I was like "okay, yeah, this is danse macabre shit for sure!" if you aren't familiar with the trope (if you are you can totally just ignore this lmao) it's this type of art that emerged in Europe post-Black Death and continued well into the early modern period. it showed skeletons (as personifications of death) dancing with living humans from all walks of life - from kings to peasants. the main idea was that death is universal and doesn't discriminate based on things like wealth, power, or status. also, the skeletons always look like they are having just a hell of a time, which is really what this song made me think of. so I picked a couple danse macabre images, along with a couple others that I felt fit the vibes!
these are the artworks I would associate with "Dead Man's Party" by Oingo Boingo (with more details and images below the cut!)
The Dead in the Ossuary by Wilhelm Werner von Zimmern
The Triumph of Death by Pieter Bruegel the Elder
The Harlequin's Carnival by Joan Miró
La Vice Suprême by Félicien Rops
Folio 89v of the Zimmern Dance of Death: "The Dead in the Ossuary" by Wilhelm Werner von Zimmern (ca. 1540-1550)
Tumblr media
this folio is from a whole book of danse macabre images, and has some of my favorite illustrations of this trope. like, look at these funky dudes! they are have the time of their (after)lives! the instruments, the dancing, the little skelly smiles! this image came to my mind instantly while listening to "Dead Man's Party" because I could totally see these silly little guys playing and dancing to the song - I just feel like it fits so well!
The Triumph of Death by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (ca. 1562)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is one hell of a painting and I just love it! it's very Bosch-esque and has that sort of northern renaissance chaos to it that I just love. I think it's supposed to be kind of a frightening picture, but I just find it hilarious. there is just so much going on in the image, so I included some close-ups of my favorite details. first we've got the skeletons with the horse and cart, with one of them playing some sort of crank-powered instrument (??). love the crow, love the little green beanie, love the cart of skulls, 10/10, no notes. in the next detail, the skeleton really said to the king "time's up, bitch" and I love that for him. all while the other one is just stealing treasure from these huge barrels of coins?? we love to see it. then we've got this little barge of skeletons playing trumpets - very fun, very silly. the guy at the rudder looks so bored it kills me every time. and the little skulls in the portholes?? show-stopping, incredible, never-been-done-before. and then finally, a skeleton aggressively playing some bongos. need I say more? okay, I swear I didn't just put this in here to talk about how much I love this painting, but I do really feel like it fits the song's vibes. like, there's certainly a strange and macabre element, but it's also very fun and upbeat. the living humans in this image may not be having a party, but the dead men certainly are!
The Harlequin's Carnival by Joan Miró (ca. 1924-1925)
Tumblr media
when I first heard the instrumentals/music of the song, this painting instantly came to mind. it's funky, it's weird (affectionate), it's a little chaotic (in a good way), it's colorful, it's fun - idk I can just hear the song playing over whatever the hell is happening in this image. this one isn't so death-related, but I feel like it captures the energy of the song really well. it also seems to kinda vibe with the cover art of the album, with that kind of colorful chaos, so I thought that was cool too!
La Vice Suprême (The Supreme Vice) by Félicien Victor Joseph Rops (1884)
Tumblr media
and finally, we have this symbolist print by Rops. so, I'm pretty sure it's actually about sex and venereal disease in late victorian Paris, but honestly I just think it's a really fun image. I picked this partially because the skeleton on the left gives off major Jack Skellington energy to me, and just from my own experience I tend to associate Danny Elfman with The Nightmare Before Christmas. I just love him holding his head under his arm, the chain of his monocle dangling, him dramatically swinging open the coffin - it's just so over the top and fun and almost kinda fanciful. I also picked this one because I can totally see him saying "it's a dead man's party, leave your body and soul at the door" as he opens the coffin with a flourish and then walks into the party with his date.
those are the artworks that to me have similar vibes to "Dead Man's Party" by Oingo Boingo! I could see the song playing in the background of all these images, and I feel like they also just match the energy of the song 💙
I hope you enjoyed this and maybe found some new macabre art that you like! ☺️☺️
have so so so so much fun at the concert!!
love and hugs always,
charlotte 💙

I remember confronting other Oingo Boingo/Elfman fans about antisemitism but what really got me was one time someone was curiously asked if he was Jewish on a FB post. Mods immediately blocked the post from having any more commentators on it. The comments mostly read things like "why does his religion matter" or "he's an atheist". I reached out to the OP who was devastatingly upset and confused because they too were Jewish.
That specific instance was so memorable because not only was the OP asking a perfectly simple question, but the reaction to the question showed that the common fan had no idea what Jewishness or Judaism was.
This had occurred many times during my trip through the fan community. The several instances that I had brought up Danny's Jewishness had prompted many intense reactions from fans, which were mostly negative. Either saying something fetishy (which I will not repeat) or a complete disgust that I had even brought up the subject. The fan community simply did not want to address anything that this man had been screaming about for years. "How could the song Insanity be about the Christian Right and Zionism? He's just saying religion is bad. You're just thinking about it too much!" They did not give a single shit about the man's identity as a Jewish artist.
Mind you, I had talked to several people who had left the community for the same reason I did: the antisemitism smelled like a rotting corpse in there.

Tears brimmed your widened eyes as soon as Kid entered your room with him, hand instinctively hiding the phone on your hand as you held your breath as your lover walked towards you with the usual frown on his face.
“K..Kid, welcome back, i-is there anything bothering you today or—or anything you need..?” You ask with a whisper, wiping your tears away while Kid plopped himself down the bed, sitting beside you.
“Obviously, there is something bothering me, and no, I don't need anything,” He grumbled, eyes travelling to your figure that stiffen under his gaze that slowly softened after letting a deep sigh out. “so never mind that. How about you? Is there anything wrong? You look like you're fucking constipated.”
Mentioning this, you jolted, turning the phone in your hand off and clutching it, not wanting Kid to know that you have your phone with you—but unluckily, it made a small shutter sound upon closing, catching your boyfriend's attention.
“Was that your phone?” The red head asks as you looked down, guiltily nodding your head as an answer, finally revealing the gadget and handling it to him.
“Eh? The hell am I supposed to do with your phone?” Raising one of his non-existent brows up, Kid pushed your phone back to you while he relaxed himself on the headboard, small yawn escaping his lips as you looked at him with wide eyes.
“You.. You are not going to check it? You're not gonna ask me what was I doing or who was I talking to?” Asking this with a stammer, Kid froze, slowly turning his head towards you, mouth agape.
“The fuck?” He cursed, soon taking your phone and slamming it on the nightstand, causing you to shudder. “Do you think I'm like your fucking ex who's such a control freak!?”
Exclaiming this in fury, your breathing got ragged, the tears you wiped away coming back. “I don't care if you're on you're phone, talking to someone! I don't need to know everything you do, damned woman!”
Grabbing your chin with the lightest pressure he could put on it, Kid forcefully made you look at him directly in his eyes that burned in anger and somewhat... Sadness.
“I am not that fucking ex of yours to be staying well informed of you...!!” The man spat, letting go of your chin and running his hand through his flaming red hair with a loud exhale through his nose.
“But look, right now, you're treating me like that fucker..!” Clicking his tongue, he then bit his lower lip, trying to cool down the slightest upon realizing that he's been shouting at you.
“If you miss 'em that much, why don't ya go back to them and go cry every night because of the shits you have to put up with them, huh?” Suggesting this in a much more tame tone, yet same venomous words, Kid looked away from you who's got hot tears flowing down your cheeks, sobs escaping your lips by what he said.
“I'm sorry, Kid! It's just—their rules were etched into my entirety, and—and I hate it, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, please.. Please don't push me away from.. You.” You plead, hands shakily reaching out to your lover, wanting to embrace him tightly, but you retracted them after.
“I..I'll be better, I promise. I'll change, so tell me, what—what do I have to do? What are the rules you want me to follow? Do you—do you want me to be less clingy with you?”
You croaked out, voice shaky, still crying to your boyfriend who clenched his shirt, his chest tightening, snapping his head to you and immediately engulfing you into a hug that is tight enough to almost suffocate you, yet it is comforting, warm, and inviting.
“Ugh, damn it all! Curse that bastard, I'll kill them for turning you into this—this thing, as if you are a servant! Fuck, fuck, fuck them..!” The frustrated male shouts, a string of curses leaving mouth later on.
“..This is upsetting. I thought we left that ghost that kept creeping up on your mind behind? Can't we just be happy together without the nightmare they gave you?” He mutters after calming down, caressing your back as you cried on his shoulder.
“Just ignore what everyone 'round us are telling what to do.. Deafen their sound, by a sweet whisper,” Taking a pause as your crying slowly subsided, Kid whispered into your ear, “I love you.”
“You can adore me all you want, but don't go overboard,” He sighed out, running his hand through your hair, combing it, hoping that you'd feel better before he continued what he was saying, “..to the point that you're here, crying in my arms because you can't put this shit up even with yourself.”
“I see no escape from the roles we always play, but I don't want to follow those ridiculous sexist beliefs that you have to succumb to me and crap just because you're a woman.” Giving you a kiss on the forehead after he spoke, Kid lets a relieved sigh out of his mouth seeing you calmed down, sitting on his lap with your arms dangling by his neck, sniffling as you listened to him with all ears.
“i just want to prove, and let you know that you're mine now, but you're not my sister, you're mine now, but you're not my child. And you're mine now, but you're not my slave.”
“You're missing the whole point, you're not my little pet, so don't throw away your life just because of me.” The red head stated in a serious tone, wanting to change your mind that has been poisoned by your previous toxic lover.
“I do not own your soul, and I don't want you in a cage, unlike your ass-like ex.” He says with a frown upon mentioni your ex that kept you locked up away from everyone.
“I only want your heart to find a special place, with me.” Your boyfriend mentioned, falling silent for a few moments, letting yoy hear his heart thump for you then continuing.
“You're not. my. slave. Keep that in mind, babe.” Kid reminds you of once again, face burrowed on your collar bone.
“I am not a King, so please... Don't worship me.” Voice cracking as his heart sunk into the void knowing that you were made to follow your ex like a dog, Kid grit his teeth. “You may be mine, but I don't own your entirety, you have your own life, and I have mine.”
“I love you the way you are yourself, all free like a bird, and not the way you act like a puppet for me,” Etching this on your mind, Kid once again kissed you, showering you the love you deserve. “you are not my slave, but you are my lover.”

top 5 music albums?
Tumblr media
From my insta 👍 ik there's 6 but you can just ignore the strykalo one. This is all just my subjective feelings and opinions as always. I'm not saying that these are the best albums ever made but the ones that I personally enjoy the most. I listen to music as background noise mostly
1. MARINA THE FAMILY JEWELS FOREVERRRR I'm a marina girlie she made me who i am and it's still the most relatable album I've ever heard in my entire life 😭 it's too special and personal to be lower
2. Depeche Mode black celebration. I used to say my favourite dm album is ultra but I think black celebration has grown on me more and it evokes very special feelings in me that I don't know how to explain. I'm obsessed with their themes of (a bit fucked up) intimacy and some of their best songs are from this album. It's great from start to finish and the lyrics are so picturesque that I cannot listen to them and not immediately start thinking about an animated lyric video of some sort like the one I made for here is the house
3. Oingo Boingo weird science is fucking AWESOME and I'm obsessed with them in general but the way this album talks about life and death and afterlife combined with their very specific sound also evokes a lot of feelings in me and I just like it, I love Danny Elfman and I love this album
4. Cocteau twins Heaven or Las Vegas... the cocteau twins fandom is dying reblog if you're a real cock. I don't understand shit from what they're saying but the Vibes are immaculate. Genuinely haven't heard anything remotely similar to what they managed to achieve with this one
5. David Bowie 1. Outside. I'm not a very big Bowie fan but this is my favourite album of his. I think the concept and narrative is very interesting and the sound is one of the more daring from him I've heard. 👍

Been listening lately to a playlist that spotify recommended me named "Dark 80s". And look, almost all of the songs were real bangers, and the only time I've skipped a couple of songs are because 1 I didn't like, and a couple more because I can't stand that fascist motherfucker of Morrissey.
But the thing is, the playlist it's like the most surface level "dark" music of the 80's, and sometimes, there are some songs that, again, are absolute bangers, but had no reason to be in a "dark" playlist.
Do The Police have "dark" songs? Sure, but "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" it's not one of them. Is "Land Down Under" from Men at Work a "dark song"? Unlikely. Maybe "Just what I needed" by The Cars? Don't think so (also, that one's from 1978, so it's not even fom the right decade). How about Duran Duran's "Girls on Film"? Yeah, thematically it is, but musically? I dunno, I think songs like "The Chauffeur" are darker.
How can your "dark playlist" have more U2 songs than songs by The Cure? Or have only one theme by Siouxie and the Banshees, and no sight of, say, Bauhaus, Dead Can Dance or Oingo Boingo. How can you include Talking Heads but leave "Psycho Killer" behind? Or have no metal songs of any kind.
Again, it's not a bad playlist, but it's far from what I would consider a proper showing of "dark 80s" music

Okay, I'm posting this in SLIGHT defense of Danny Elfman (And not about the harassment accusation).
I am very annoyed when people use the song "Little Girls" as proof of his wrong doing.
"Little Girls" is a call-out song to shame sexual predators in Hollywood. The character is caught at the end of the song. The music video makes this more blatant. The character is NOT supposed to be sympathetic or likable.
Danny Elfman has repeatedly said that this is what the song is about, calling out and shaming sexual predators in positions of Hollywood. I can provide many interviews and documented sources where he said this.
Danny Elfman went through an experimental phase while in Oingo Boingo where he wrote about awful and terrifying people.
Here's "Helpless" which is from the point of view of a serial killer on death row, who murdered several people, including his own mother.
I am PRETTY certain Danny Elfman did not kill his own mother, just like I don't think Freddie Mercury shot anyone (He has three different songs where he talks about pulling a trigger and someone dying, which could be a metaphor for accidentally spreading AIDS but the songs were written before Freddie was diagnosed so likely not.)
Disclaimer: I don't actually like the song "Little Girls." In fact it's the one Oingo Boingo song I kind of hate. Yes, the creep gets caught at the end of the song but it triggers a bit of a squick in me.
David Bowie did similar (playing a killer) in the song "Please, Mr. Gravedigger" where he kills the gravedigger because he tells him what he did and he's there to get rid of some left over evidence.
I am pretty sure twenty-something David Bowie didn't murder a little girl and a grave digger...
Anyway, here's Helpless where Danny Elfman plays a killer on Death Row.

Today’s compilation:
Soundtrack Smashes: The 80s 1989 Pop-Rock / Adult Contemporary / New Wave / Soft Rock / Synthpop / R&B
Y’know, it's funny, the conceit of this album was to present the best songs from film and TV soundtracks of the 80s, but with *so many* movies and shows to choose from, MCA still ultimately decided that the best course of action to take here was to allot one-third of this release’s real estate to tracks from... *checks notes*...both Beverly Hills Cop I & II.
But, realistically, this wasn't actually ever intended to be the *absolute* best of 80s soundtracks; more specifically, it was intended to be the best of 80s soundtracks that were already in the MCA catalog. And that definitely ended up limiting the pool by a lot, but MCA was still one of the heaviest hitters in the soundtrack game back when this album came out, so it still begs the question as to why they decided to dip into Beverly Hills Cop so much.
And I know that you're all probably just screaming at me in unison right now, "hey, wait a second! 'What a Wonderful World' is on here, and that was in Good Morning, Vietnam, and that soundtrack was released by A&M, and A&M had nothing to do with MCA when this album was released, so, you're actually a fucking liar!"
Ha, you really thought you had me there. I mean, did you even look at what label originally released "What a Wonderful World" in 1967? It was ABC Records. And who bought ABC out in 1979? Duh, MCA! Nice try, people!
Anyway, now that you know what this album actually was instead of what it was trying to present itself as, you can still see that this is a halfway decent collection of songs. And you can also see that there was this very definite and overly upbeat, yet hollow vibe that seemed to be almost exclusive to 80s rock and pop-rock soundtrack themes that went beyond just Kenny Loggins being Kenny Loggins. Glenn Frey does it in "The Heat Is On," Night Ranger does it in the atrociously over-produced "Secret of My Success," and even Little Richard does it in "Great Gosh A'Mighty." It's hard to put a finger on, but there's a common thread of empty exuberance in those songs that I feel like you just don't really run into that much of in 80s music in general. It's a weird and mostly bad phenomenon, I think. There's just something about them.
And can we talk about Glenn Frey for a quick sec? Isn't it kinda funny that, with him being an Eagles rock star and all, that the two biggest solo hits of his career were actually recorded for soundtracks? I mentioned "The Heat Is On" from Beverly Hills Cop, but "You Belong to the City" from Miami Vice is on here too. And that show was so big back then that they were having established artists actually record songs for their *individual episodes*! Crazy to think about these days, right? But no show today can attract anywhere near the same amount of eyeballs that Miami Vice could. There's just too many other options now. And someone may still debut a song on a TV show, but I think that's a little different than recording a song *specifically* for a TV show. I really don't think you see that anymore.
So, MCA definitely tried to pull some trickery with this album, but it's still not that bad. Sure, a good portion of the tracks range from bad to meh, but with those two Glenn Frey songs, Jan Hamner's "Miami Vice Theme," Oingo Boingo's "Weird Science," Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," and, of course, Harold Faltermeyer's electro classic Beverly Hills Cop theme "Axel F," there's still enough here to satisfy.
Highlights:
Glenn Frey - "The Heat Is On" Jan Hammer - "Miami Vice Theme" Oingo Boingo - "Weird Science" Harold Faltermeyer - "Axel F" Glenn Frey - "You Belong to the City" Louis Armstrong - "What a Wonderful World"

dare to be stupid?
Best song: It's got to be Like a Surgeon, man. I mean come on. It's Like a Surgeon. It's got silliness, it's got a strong and consistent theme, it's got jokes, it's got danceability, and it has a super cool music video. Quintessential Weird Al — and a perfect example of a well-done parody song.
Most talented song: Dare to Be Stupid is one of Weird Al's best examples of really knowing his stuff. It's a Devo song, through and through. Also, you can really tell Weird Al likes New Wave: along with this one, two of his other most accurate style parodies have been You Make Me (Oingo Boingo style parody) and Dog Eat Dog (Talking Heads style parody. Specifically the album Little Creatures)
BONUS SECTION!! I couldn't find a spot for this one but just HAD to include it so i added an extra spot. Song that stands out: This Is the Life is one of Weird Al's only songs that isn't a parody or a style parody: it's a complete and total original! I think it's a really great one honestly. Very fun lyrics, simplistic concept executed wonderfully.
Least favourite song on the album: im sorry i never watched George of the Jungle. I dont know that show. it's a fine song It's just not for me, or other people who have never watched the show George of the Jungle. Also Cable TV gets a mention here, not because i dont like it but because it's the first song in a classic Weird Al tradition: songs about all sorts of junk you can find on television. He did this idea better in Couch Potato and I Can't Watch This.
Most overrated song on the album: Like I guess it would be Like a Surgeon but really that song is exactly as rated as it should be. It deserves every drop of love it recieves, no more no less. Really every other track on here (besides Dare to Be Stupid and Yoda (which is good btw i have to mention that. it's a nice song)) is pretty underrated.
Most underrated song on the album: You all hate Girls Just Want to Have Lunch, and why? It's really quite a fun song. I see Weird Al fans hating on this and i scoff and say get real! You are a Weird Al fan, and you dislike it when he gets silly like this? Man, you know even Weird Al doesn't like this one? Maybe you should be a girl having lunch maybe that will change your perspective on this song.
Banger of bangers: ok baby. alright girl. this is the song I've been dying to talk about this whole time. this one is to be honest probably my favorite, but that's probably just because I've been listening to Like a Surgeon since I was a kid and I recently discovered this one. This song is named Slime Creatures from Outer Space. And you'll never guess what it's about. It's about slime creatures. and they came from outer space. and they're terrorizing the citizens of earth, and they've got bug eyes. They've got death ray eyes. They've got slimy lizard skin, an evil lookin' grin. They'll rip your head off and suck your brains out with a straw. Slime creatures, from outer space. Anyways. it's an homage to 50s Scifi and honestly it really pulls it off. and more than anything. even more than its fun lyrics. even more than its cool theme. It's so danceable. It's so moveable. The song plays in your mind and in your ears, and your fingers like it. It's amazing. Say what's the deal with both of Weird Al's movie genre parodies being such bangers?
Rating out of 10: this is hard honestly. like i'd give it a 8.4 I suppose. I don't know how well weird al music really works with a normal 1-10 scale. There's a lot of different scale his music is on and honestly when he makes a song that's shitty on one aspect it often makes up for it with another. But yeah. 8.4
