As is my tradition, let’s start off the year with some adventure gamebooks, this time from the Fighting Fantasy line. I’m going to jump around to some I particularly enjoy, starting with FF3, The Forest of Doom (1983). I very much enjoy Iain McCaig’s cover art — autumnal tones and lizard folk, what’s not to love? The interiors are by Malcolm Barter. After devouring so many Russ Nicholson-illustrated FF’s, Barter’s line work seems jarringly clean, but I like it and he actually employs a variety of stylistic choices that are grittier than they seem at first blush.
I probably enjoy this one more than it deserves. It is constructed on a loop, which is nice, because you get lots of chances to not succeed at your quest (which is rather dull — find the hammer, return the hammer) and try again, but subsequent trips don’t account for the things you’ve already done (like the monsters you’ve killed, for instance). I don’t really see a good way of fixing that problem, either, at least not without ballooning the page count. There are also a ton of items to get and use, but none of them are particularly exciting. And it might be a me-problem, but I can’t seem to find a genuinely optimal path through the book; there is always some need to retread. I don’t love that.
Still, it’s a literal walk in the woods, which is a delight after the first two volumes taking place underground and inside. I love the atmosphere of it, and the number of weirdos who are hanging out in what is seemingly not that large a forest. Not the most earth-shattering FF, but not the worst by a good measure.

The party was in full swing when Andy Barber walked through the door. The lawyer stopped at the table and, leaning down, wrote his name on a tag. It had been twenty years since he’d seen any of these people. A lot had changed. As he wandered around the old gymnasium, he closed his eyes and listened for the sounds of squeaking shoes. A hand bumped Andy’s shoulder and a male voice floated through the air, “Well, I’ll be damned. Andrew Barber. Never thought I would see you here again.”
Andy turned to find his old point guard buddy, Dan Murdoch, standing behind him. A wide grin spread across both men’s faces and Dan stepped forward as the men shook hands then hugged. Andy Barber pulled back, “How have you been, Dan?”
Dan replied, “Oh you know, just living the dream.”
The lawyer nodded, “What are you up to now? I haven’t seen you since graduation.”
Andy’s friend chuffed, “I went to college and got a finance degree. I’m working as a hedge fund manager. You?”
Barber scratched his neck, “I went to college as well and got a law degree. Got married and had a kid. We’re divorced now and share custody of our son.”
“Damn, that sucks. How old is your kid?”
“He’s sixteen. What about you?”
“Yeah. I married Brooke Thacker and we have three kids.”
Andy smirked and cocked an eyebrow, “The head cheerleader? Good for you, man.”
Dan threw back the beer he had in his hand and wiped his mouth with his thumb, “Yep. I hate that you and Audrey got divorced.”
A sad look crossed Andy’s face, “Naw, man. I never married Audrey McCaig. She was the one that got away. My ex-wife’s name is Laurie. You don’t know her. We went to college together and I accidentally knocked her up. We thought we were in love but some events in the last few years kind of fucked that up.”
It was Dan’s turn to raise an eyebrow, “That sucks. You know Audrey’s here right? I heard she never married. She’s a stunner, man. You should talk to her.”
Andy shook his head, “That ship probably sailed. Besides, I’m not here for that. I just want to have a good time.”
Dan nodded, “I get that. Grab a beer, socialize, have a good time. There’s a lot of folks here who would love to talk to the star quarterback. We missed ya, man.”
Andy smiled and Dan walked away. Quietly, the lawyer made his way to the drink and food table and made himself a plate. He turned and walked out into the open air just outside the gym. As he did so, a quiet voice interrupted his thoughts, “Andy?”
He turned and all the air left his body. There before him was the most beautiful woman he’d seen in a long time. Her brown hair was pulled to the side in a braid and her green eyes sparkled in the lights. Andy knew her and one word, a name, softly escaped his lips, “Audrey.”
Audrey McCaig stared, “I never thought you would come back here. When you left without saying goodbye, I thought you weren’t coming back. No one even saw you when your mother passed away.”
Andy nodded, “We had a quiet graveside for my mom. She didn’t want a funeral.”
“I heard,” Audrey paused a moment, “that you got married.”
He sniffed, “I’m not married anymore. We divorced last year.”
Audrey tilted her head, “I’m so sorry, Andy. Any kids?”
“Just one,” Andy murmured, “A boy named Jacob. He’s sixteen and lives primarily with his mother. What about you?”
She lowered her eyes, “No. I never married or had kids. You hurt me and I didn’t want to try to trust another man.”
His food and drink sat forgotten on the concrete rail of the stairs. Andy hesitantly stepped forward and touched her arm before speaking softly, “I’m very sorry. If it’s worth anything, I never forgot you. Every night I turned over and wished that it was you lying beside me. You are very special to me, Audrey.”
Placing a finger under Audrey’s chin, Andy raised her head. For the first time in twenty years, blue eyes met green ones and became entranced in each other. As if a mystical force was possessing him, Andy gently lowered his face toward Audrey’s and her eyes fluttered shut. Their lips connected and a small moan escaped Audrey’s lips.
Breathless, Andy pulled back, “Wow.”
Audrey stepped away, “Andy, I can’t… Not again.”
Then she turned and was gone leaving Andy standing alone. Tears stung his eyes as he turned away from the building and toward the football field. He picked up his plate of food and a beer then made his way onto the field. Stepping over to the bleachers, Andy sat down. For a few minutes, he sat in silence then a small cough broke his concentration. He looked up to see Audrey standing by the steps of the bleachers.
“Andy…”
The man stood up, “Hey. I’m sorry about earlier.”
The brunette shook her head, “Don’t apologize. It’s fine. I came to apologize for my reaction.”
Andy replied, “It’s fine. I need a top up on my drink. Come with me?”
Audrey smiled sadly, “I’m going to go. I just wanted to say goodbye to you.”
Andy’s heart sank, “I understand. I was hoping we could visit a little more but I understand. It was good to see you.”
His old sweetheart stepped up to him and kissed Andy’s cheek, “It was so good to see you too. I hope I see you again some time.”
She stepped back to leave but Andy grabbed her hand and pulled her close, “Please stay with me. I’m leaving tomorrow but I would like to see you tonight.”
Audrey hummed, “I don’t know, Andy. It’s been so long…”
Before Andy could say anything else, Audrey pulled away from him and rushed away. Hurriedly, Andy picked up the plate and beer and threw them in the trash can at the corner of the bleachers before following.
“Audrey, wait.”
The woman stopped in her tracks and turned as Andy closed the gap between them. He spoke, “I’m sorry I freaked you out. I’m staying at the TownePlace Suites if you change your mind. Room 217.”
He kissed Audrey’s hand and she kissed his cheek before walking away. Andy returned to the party where he ran into a few more of his football buddies and classmates before he left North Kingstown Senior High School.
Getting in his car, the lawyer drove fifteen minutes to his hotel. As he entered the TownePlace Suites, he made his way to the elevator and up to his room. Andy opened the door and stepped into the room. After placing his keys, wallet and phone on the room table, Andy went to the bathroom where he stripped and stepped into the shower.
The hot water relaxed Andy’s muscles and he imagined the droplets being the gentle, fleeting touch of Audrey McCaig’s fingertips dancing on his skin. His dick twitched and began to harden as he thought about Audrey. Swiftly, the man grasped his cock gently in his hand and stroked it as the water rolled down his shoulders. The more he focused on his dirty thoughts and memories, the harder he got and closer he got to his release. Finally, and with a shout, Andy let go and shot his release all over his hand.
After cleaning himself off again, Andy shut off the water and stepped from the shower. He wrapped a towel around his waist and ran a towel over his hair. A gentle knock on the hotel room door broke Andy’s concentration. He approached it and glanced through the peep hole then threw the door open.
Audrey stood in the doorway. She gasped softly at the sight of Andy’s sculpted muscles and toned chest. He looked down at himself, “I’m so sorry. I didn’t think you would actually come.”
The woman smiled, “Can I come in?”
Stepping aside, Andy swept his hand toward the interior of the room as Audrey crossed the threshold. She sat down on one of the beds and Andy excused himself to the bathroom to put on a pair of sleeping pants. Audrey looked about the room taking in the bareness of the suitcase that lay open on the spare double bed.
“I’m glad you’re here.” Came Andy’s voice from the bathroom, “I feel like we have a lot to talk about.”
She leaned back on her hands, “We do.”
Andy exited the bathroom, “I was glad to see you, Audrey. I mean that. I know that life has been hard for you.”
Audrey shook her head, “Not really. I have had a great life. Even though I never married, I made it just fine.”
“Really?” Andy cocked his eyebrow, “What do you mean?”
The woman before him laughed, “I mean, I graduated college with top honors. I have an amazing career and I can afford to buy everything I could possibly want.”
Slowly, Andy lowered himself onto the adjacent bed, “But surely you missed something?”
She looked away sadly, “I suppose I did. But that’s part of the past. I am curious…”
“What?”
A low sigh slipped out as Audrey gathered herself, “Why did you leave me, Andy? We talked so much about you and me. We were discussing our future together. Why did you decide to live your life without me?”
Gulping, Andy replied, “Because I was scared. I didn’t want you knowing about me. I was afraid that you would find out who I really was and you would get scared. In order to avoid that, I left you first. Surely, you understand?”
Confused, Audrey gave a little head shake, “I don’t. Andy, if you were concerned about something, you could have talked to me.”
He nodded, “I know that now. I just had so many secrets and I was so afraid of people finding them out. I was a scared kid.”
“How about now?”
Andy let his eyes meet Audrey’s, “What do you mean?”
Standing up, Audrey moved to sit by Andy. She took his hand as their eyes locked once more, “Are you still afraid of people finding out who you truly are?”
Andy didn’t break eye contact, “No, I’m not. Not anymore.”
Audrey waved her hand absentmindedly, “I don’t think it really matters. After all, we aren’t our parents. Their blood may flow in us but that doesn’t make us them. It doesn’t make us killers.”
The man stiffened and a modicum of fear flashed in his eyes, “What do you know?”
“Only what the news said, Andy. Your kid was cute but he must look more like his mother. When I saw the picture of you, I knew it was you. You had changed but I could still see that sweet, kind seventeen year old who had the whole world at his feet.”
He looked away but she turned his face back to her, “Andy…”
Timidly, Andy reached up and brushed his fingertips against Audrey’s jaw. He leaned forward and kissed Audrey gently. Breaking the kiss, he whispered, “I missed you.”
“I missed you too.”
The kiss was deepened as Andy pushed his lips further against Audrey’s mouth. Gently, he let his tongue prod Audrey’s mouth. Her lips parted and allowed him to explore. Andy’s hand raised up her back to the nape of her neck as he deepened the kiss even further. Audrey laid back on the bed as Andy twisted to continue the kisses.
Pulling back, Andy murmured, “Audrey, you’re wearing too much.”
She sat up and pulled her blouse over her head and Andy unhooked her bra effortlessly. Audrey shrugged it off. Andy kissed the woman’s bare shoulder, “My god, you’re still so beautiful.”
The kisses drifted down her shoulder and down toward her left breast as the lawyer took position above Audrey. Andy took the nipple in his mouth, teasing it with his tongue. Audrey threw her head back and moaned slightly. Never stopping, Andy unbuttoned Audrey’s pants then slipped his hand down them and let his fingers dance along her pelvis causing Audrey to buck. Switching from the left breast to the right, Andy swirled his tongue around the areola letting it brush the nipple.
Audrey raised her hips and pushed her pants down then kicked them across the room. Andy’s hand found its way down from Audrey’s pelvis to the folds of her vulva. He smiled to himself when discovered how wet she was and that she was completely shaved. Coming off her breast with a pop, he kissed a path down from the crevice between her breasts then to her stomach and down to her pelvis before landing between her legs.
Gently, he began to lick stripes up and down her pussy careful not to stick his tongue in the hole yet. The more he sucked at her pussy, the wetter she became and the more she squirmed. Audrey moaned loudly, “Andy, I need more. P-please. Oh. My. God. Andy…”
Andy let his tongue swirl around the clit before he began to suck hard at it. This elicited a loud moan from Audrey as her body drew closer to an orgasm. Knowing she was close, Andy reached up and slowly pushed a finger into her soaked hole and let his finger drag along her walls. He quickened the pace as he fingered the woman below him all while feasting on her soaking pussy as if he hadn’t had pussy in years. In truth, he hadn’t. Laurie rarely let him do this and the last time she had; Jacob was five.
Her walls clenched around him and Audrey let go with a cry, soaking Andy’s beard with her juices. He drank down the rest. Standing up, Andy untied his sleep pants and dropped them. His erection sprang free and laid long and thick against his stomach. Audrey let loose a ragged sigh, “Oh my god. Andy. I don’t think that’s gonna fit.”
He climbed up her body with a smile, “Don’t worry. It’ll fit. Just like it did the last time. Do you remember that?”
“You were my first.”
Andy kissed her gently, “And you were mine.”
Sitting on his knees, Andy grabbed her legs and pulled her toward him before pulling her legs slightly apart. Reaching down between their bodies, Andy grabbed his member and stroked her folds gathering up her juices to make the plunge easier. He paused, “Is this okay?”
“Do it, Andy. I need to feel you again.”
Without another word, Andy shoved in and marveled at the feeling of Audrey’s pussy pulsing around him and sucking him in. Audrey threw her head back, “Oh my god. Andy! Oh fuck.”
He let her sit for a moment to adjust to his size as he was thick and long. He knew that. Audrey reached up and touched his skin, “Please move. I’ll be okay.”
Andy smiled and began to slowly thrust in and out of Audrey, “Oh my god. This pussy was made for me. So tight and sweet.”
Audrey mewed, “Does it feel good, Andy?”
He closed his eyes as he pushed in and out of Audrey, “So good. You’re so tight for me baby. So fucking perfect for this thick dick. You’re so tight. My god.”
He began to pick up the pace as Audrey placed two fingers to her pussy and began rub it. He could feel another orgasm building and continued to fuck her as Audrey cried out, “Andy! I-I’m gonna cum. Oh god. I’m gonna cum! Oh fuuuuckk!! Andy!!”
His thrust became harder, “Yes baby. Cum for me.”
Andy’s encouragement and the movements inside her pushed Audrey over the edge and she came with a shout and a flourish. Trying to keep himself from exploding inside her, Andy reached down and turned Audrey onto her side before laying down behind her. He bent one leg so he could have access to that sweet juicy cunt. The lawyer lined himself up again and pushed in. From this angle, he was able to access deeper into the woman before him. He picked up the pace and thrust harder into Audrey.
Dissatisfied with the angle, Andy flipped Audrey all the way onto her stomach and pulled her up until she was on her hands and knees. Probing gently, Andy pushed in again. This time, the pussy felt so much tighter. Maybe it’s the angle. Andy mused. He quickened the pace and plunged deeper into her pussy. Andy could feel the tip of his cock kissing Audrey’s cervix. Her moans drove him even crazier and made him push harder and faster. Soon both of them had a climax threatening to explode. With a final thrust, Andy laid himself flat against Audrey’s back and fingered her making her cum. As she did, his own release mixed with hers. Audrey could feel Andy coating her walls with his seed. She didn’t care.
Finally collapsing, Andy rolled onto his back, “Wow.”
Audrey rolled onto her side, “You’ve still got it.”
He released a low chuckle, “Stay with me?”
And she did.
~~
Andy Barber sighed as he looked out the window of his Newton home. Laurie had just picked up Jacob and he hadn’t heard from Audrey since that night, seven weeks ago. Stirring his coffee, Andy sat down on the chair and looked at his phone for the third time in five minutes. As he scrolled through the news feed, the doorbell rang.
The lawyer stood up and made his way to the door and opened it. There, standing before him, was Audrey McCaig. Her face was puffy and she seemed uncertain. She had clearly been crying. Concern crossed his face but then she spoke, “I’m pregnant, Andy.”

English interview
Hayden Christensen Reflects On The Star Wars Prequels: ‘Those Movies Have Held Up Well’ – Exclusive
Talk about pressure. There are few villains in cinema as iconic as Darth Vader – recognisable from the briefest glimpse of his distinctive helmet, or the merest mechanical hiss of his respirator. So when Hayden Christensen signed on to play Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequels, he took on a formidable task: presenting the man behind the mask. Across Episode II – Attack Of The Clones and Episode III – Revenge Of The Sith, Christensen showed us how exactly how the galaxy’s brightest hope turned from the light and plunged into total darkness – and through that time, his own Star Wars experience was a mix of light and dark too. After weathering years of criticism, he’s now been wholeheartedly embraced by the fandom.
Speaking to Empire in a major new interview – and original photo shoot – for our 25th anniversary celebration of the prequel trilogy, Christensen opened up on his time in the galaxy far, far away. “It’s been a remarkable experience. And just a very heartwarming one,” he tells Empire. “The journey that I’ve been on with Star Wars over the last 20 plus years... it’s been a wild ride, and where we’re at now is really meaningful to me.” While the backlash against the prequels was difficult to take, he’s pleased to see how beloved all three films are today. “I think that those movies have held up well over time,” he says. “It feels like vindication for the work that we did. Everyone that worked on those movies thought that we were part of something special. We all wanted to do our very best work, and we cared a lot about it. And so to see the response from the fans now, it’s very cool.”
That response includes excitement from younger fans – who are always thrilled to meet the man who… well, murdered all the Jedi younglings in Revenge Of The Sith. “There was a lot of talk about us doing that scene, and I love that George did it. It was a bold move. And it’s shocking,” the actor says. “Kids seem to forget about that scene when they meet me! There’s not any fear or intimidation. They’re just excited to meet Anakin.”
Having ridden out the stormy reception to the prequels – and returned to the Star Wars galaxy in recent years for appearances in Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka – Christensen reflected on the advice that he would give to his younger self before stepping into Attack Of The Clones. “Even though I was a bit overwhelmed, I was also a confident young man, and I wanted to make my mark. But I guess if I were to have some advice for me during that general time in my life, it would be: ‘Patience’,” he decides. “Because my journey with the character and with Star Wars has at times been a bumpy one... but I’m in a good place with it now. And so that’s why I say patience.” In 2024, there’s undoubtedly balance to the Force.
Read Empire’s full Hayden Christensen interview – and see more images from the shoot – in the Star Wars prequels 25th anniversary issue. Also inside the magazine, we speak to Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Liam Neeson, Ian McDiarmid, Samuel L. Jackson, Brian Blessed, and more about starring in the films; we revisit iconic sequences with producer Rick McCallum, stunt co-ordinator Nick Gillard, and concept designer Iain McCaig, breaking down the Podrace, the Geonosis arena battle, and the Mustafar duel; we get a closer look at rarely-seen concept art from across the trilogy; we speak to designer Ellen Lee Moon on the story behind her legendary Phantom Menace poster, and much, much more. It’s the ultimate look back at the trilogy that changed everything.

10 years ago at the Behind The Iron Curtain workshop in Bukarest. Will never forget Iain Mccaig’s workshop where he shared his stories from working with George Lucas and his Team on Star Wars. He also shared passion for storytelling and almost lost his voice in the process. He’s definitely one of most inspiring and positive persons I’ve had the pleasure to meet. This event changed my career path and made me realize what I really wanted to do instead of what I almost wanted to do and now I’m doing it so thank you Iain and everyone I met there and the fantastic people that arranged the event 🫶 Next week I’m off to @thu_official event in Troia and I can’t wait to see all the artists, talks and workshops! #event #thuofficial #illustration #iainmccaig #troia #behindtheironcurtain #starwars (at Stockholm, Sweden) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cie8DGVD0aH/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

padmé’s funeral outfit:

if you missed my previous ones, here they are:

my favorite padmé outfits

Tumblr media
^ BTS of RotS funeral scene
yep! i am analyzing padmé’s funeral dress, otherwise know as the water gown. this scene in the movie is so emotional, and it is definitely with the help of this powerful ensemble.
after her death, padmé is escorted through the mourning crowds of naboo, her home. the floating casket, along with the flowing blue robes and carefully placed wildlife, create a sense of floating in water, hence the water gown.
Tumblr media
pictures above are the design concepts for the water gown, done by the amazing ian mccaig. this piece was one of his favorites, quoting “this was my favorite painting that i’ve ever done for the whole prequel trilogy. i was there when padmé was born as a character, and now I was burying her. the flowers are tears”.
Tumblr media
the beautiful natalie portman also loved this dress, as it reminded her of ophelia, a character in shakespeare’s hamlet. “it’s really, really beautiful. i think trisha (the designer) wanted to get an ocean sense. someone said to me that it was very ‘ophelia.’ with the flowers and the hair, it does look like i’m drowning.” both ophelia and padmé have a sadness about them, one that is represented throughout their clothes as well as their faces.
Tumblr media
the material of the bodice is smocked, which was developed in england and fashionable during the middle ages, especially for middle class families. It was both fitting and flexible, making it useful for laborers. in this outfit, it is dyed different waves of blue, again looking for the oceanic feel. it is very finely smocked, with lots of layers to create a full skirt.
Tumblr media
the skirt is made of silk organza, originated from china and traded along the silk road. the extremely thin fabric was created by spreading the silk to spider web thinness, and then dyed with an ombré effect of blues and purples.
Tumblr media
the cloak is made from velvet fabric with a watery, ocean pattern. velvet was made popular in the victorian era, especially in cloaks and dresses. the dark hues of purple and blue, with the look of the sea at twilight.
throughout the cloak, dark, vintage sequins are sewn. they create a chameleon effect, meaning that the colors change as the dress moves downs. some areas, such as the collar and bands running down the cloak, yet again creating waves in the ensemble.
Tumblr media
in her hair, padmé has star of bethlehem’s scattered, which represent innocence, purity, honesty, hope, and forgiveness, common themes associated with the kind padmé character. there are also strands of ribbon in her hair, with the same hues from the dress. the effect created by these flowers is truly beautiful.
Tumblr media
finally, the metaphor of all of this look is so amazingly displayed. the sense of floating in water is a reminder of the lake in naboo, where anakin and padmé fell in love. anakin, at this point, is being reborn in fire as darth vader, while padmé returns to the lake where she was so very happy with the love of her life. chefs kiss, y’all.
Tumblr media
what a beautifully designed and executed piece, worn perfectly by the beautiful natalie portman. such a moving scene and a perfect ending for the gorgeous padmé skywalker.

THE SULTRY SITH (#122, JAN 2011)
Cunning, devious, and more powerful with the Force than her Sith masters could have foreseen, Asajj Ventress’ time has come with an epic storyline in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Insider explores the origins of this infamous Star Wars character, and meets the actress behind her latest incarnation. Words: Jonathan Wilkins
ORIGINS OF ASAJJ VENTRESS
The distinctive look of Asajj Ventress came from early Attack of the Clones sketches by Dermot Power, who—along with concept artist lain McCaig—explored a number of female Sith Lord concepts. As the script changed, this direction was abandoned and Christopher Lee was cast to fill the role of Darth Sidious’ new apprentice, Count Dooku. McCaig and Power’s concept sketches were filed and eventually used as the basis for a new villain that was needed for the Clone Wars micro-series in 2003.
The name Asajj was inspired by the character Asaji from Akira Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood. Ventress originally was going to be named Juno Eclipse, but she underwent a name change to make her sound more villainous. The name Juno Eclipse was eventually given to the female co-star of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and its sequel. Ventress was first voiced by Grey DeLisle in the 2003 Star Wars: Clone Wars micro-series. Actress Nika Futterman took on the role in the 2008 Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie and the subsequent TV show
WHO IS ASAJJ VENTRESS?
Although not officially a Sith apprentice, Ventress is well-trained in the Sith arts by her master, Count Dooku. Alluring, cunning, and fiendishly clever, Ventress takes sadistic pleasure in tormenting her victims before killing them. Using her exotic magnetism, Ventress often distracts her foes before dispatching them. She carries twin-curved lightsabers, given to her by Dooku, that connect to become a double-bladed weapon. A flamboyant Force user, Ventress uses telekinesis and Force speed during combat, as well as the gravity-defying Force jump. Her skills with the dark side include the use of the Force grip, and the ability to control others’ minds.
Actress Nika Futterman has played the role of Asajj Ventress since 2008’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie. “I just assumed she had a difficult childhood!” she tells Jonathan Wilkins and James Burns.
Asajj Ventress has grown even more powerful in the Sith arts since we last saw her. Have you approached playing her differently this time round?
Although she’s back and more powerful, to me she is still the same person as she was before, and I’m playing her from the same place.
What are the challenges of playing Asajj Ventress?
I think the biggest challenge has been figuring out who she is. We didn’t know a lot about her originally. The writers were creating her character as I was playing her, so I was coming from the same place as the audience, and asking, Who is she? I didn’t want to play her just as a one-note character, because she does have a big history, and I knew we would explore that further down the line.
Were you aware of her back-story?
I had no idea about her back-story. The progression of the series is top secret, even to the actors! I always felt very free playing her, even when I had no idea where she came from. I just assumed she had a difficult childhood, and that led to her feeling that she needed to prove something. Powerful people tend to come from backgrounds where they are making up for things they never had, searching for power, because they’ve always felt powerless. Learning about her past only strengthened the direction in which I was already heading. Nothing surprised me in the storyline, it just showed me my instincts were correct.
Is evil fun to play?
Evil is the most fun to play! For me, most of my work is for kids shows and it involves playing funny and happy characters—so evil is the complete opposite of what I usually do.
Asajj has an all-new look this season. What do you think of her new threads?
I had no idea she had a new look. Like everyone else, I was psyched she got a new outfit!
Do you feel that she’s a tragic character in a way?
She’s essentially punished for being too good at what she does. I don’t consider Asajj to be tragic. I think if I played her with a sense of tragedy it would indicate there’s no hope for her future. It would leave no sense of promise in her being. I still believe she has a chance of moving towards the light. She just needs to be given the chance. As for her being punished for being too good at what she does, you have to hate the game not the player! And she can certainly handle the haters!
Do you empathize with her at all?
I completely empathize with Asajj. She’s basically walking the galaxy alone, used, and misunderstood. She’s lost all she ever cared about, and now the only thing that drives her is revenge. I think she’s gotten to the point where she believes feelings mean weakness, and that’s really sad.
Does she recognize the dark side in Anakin?
I haven’t seen anything in the show yet that indicates her seeing Anakin’s dark side, although at some point I know it will be impossible for her to not see it. Darkness sees darkness!
Would Ventress’ actions make a formidable Sith Master?
Asajj is certainly capable of anything. Whether she curbs her anger is yet to be determined. Revenge can get in the way of anyone becoming a Master.
What’s the most satisfying thing about playing Asajj Ventress?
It has to be her multiple layers. She could just be a kick-butt, sexy character, but she’s also got a history and intelligence and most of all, shows no fear. Playing someone with nothing to lose leaves open endless possibilities. It’s fun playing a part that I haven’t fully figured out yet. This season is the first real exploration into why Ventress is the way she is, and it’s really compelling!
What’s the secret to being a great voice actor?
I think the great voice actors are the ones with the greatest imagination. Unlike being on camera, you actually have to imagine your environment. You also need to have a range where you can play somebody who’s two or 92 years old, so listening to people and being able to imitate them is very important.
Do you have a favorite piece of Ventress merchandise?
It’s always incredibly exciting when one of my characters becomes an action figure! My favorite has to be my LEGO figure! That makes me feel like I’ve made it—the Asajj Ventress LEGO figure is just too cool!
Do you think Asajj could take down Ahsoka?
Oh yeah, definitely [laughs]! Asajj is very powerful, but Ahsoka’s got so much heart, and she cares so much. I think it would be a great fight. We’ve seen some of it, and I think there has to be more.
 Other Futterman Favorites!
Like many in the cast members, Nika Futterman also provides voices of other characters. Remember Shaeeah in “The Deserter”, and Chi Eckway Papanoida and TC-7 in “Sphere of Influence”? They’re all voiced by Nika Futterman!

‘ALL FILMS ARE PERSONAL’: AN ORAL HISTORY OF STAR WARS: EPISODE I THE PHANTOM MENACE [x] Queen Amidala’s Throne Room Gown: Iain McCaig: First of all, we were only going to have one costume, and I just kept drawing all these costumes. George finally came up and said, “Well, why don’t we do this. We’ll have her change costumes every time we see her.” And then later, “Oh, my God, I’m making a costume drama!” He was shocked himself to realize that. I remember the only through line I had from the previous films for Padmé was that her mom had that wacky cinnamon-roll hairstyle, which ended up not being so wacky, now that I know it’s from the Hopi Indians, and with a bamboo figure of eight it’s made in a very specific way that they didn’t know when they made the Princess Leia ones, and that’s why it came out looking like cinnamon rolls. I thought, “Okay, well, if this is her mom, maybe her mom’s hair was even crazier.” Right? And that just made a mark on Princess Leia. Of course, I didn’t know that she wouldn’t have remembered her mom. But that was my through line. Every time I would start with Natalie Portman, because I had seen her in The Professional. I counted the years from that to this and realized she was exactly the right age for the queen, and I just kept drawing and drawing and drawing her because I loved her face. George came up to me at one point and said, “Do you know this girl?” And I said, “No, sir, but she’s your queen.” And lo and behold, she was cast shortly after! The one and only time I actually got a casting choice put through. But that face is so strong and so beautiful and so innocent and so powerful, it can support any amount of crazy stuff going on around it. So I would dig through history and different cultures, and I would look for crazy hairstyles that I could jump off of. I think there was a fan one that comes from ancient Egypt, there were all kinds of crazy things. This one, I do remember there was a very powerful upside-down heart shape, and I needed something powerful at the bottom. This design happened right as the idea of “Space Nouveau” took hold. I remember we were searching for that through line for an earlier Star Wars, and I thought, “Well, yeah, it’s handmade, it’s artist-made, so it must be a kind of Space Nouveau.” [Art] Nouveau, as we all know, is inspired by nature and plant forms, and stuff. I used to lie down on the grass at Skywalker Ranch, and draw all the vegetation and come back and turn it into Star Wars costumes. So fresh off of that epiphany, I was doing this costume, and I thought, “Oh, my God, she should have plant forms!” So I put all these seed pods down at the bottom of her costume and colored them up, left them bright for some reason. When George was looking at it, he goes, “Iain, what are those?” You think on your feet, and I went, “Oh, they’re lights, George!” He said, “Oh. Won’t that be kind of heavy, down there at the bottom of the dress?” “Oh, no, they’re very light lights, George!” I quickly called ILM and went, “Help! There are these lights down at the bottom and they’ve gotta be really light and I don’t know how to do this!” Bless their heart, they made one. Trisha Biggar: The throne room [gown] was probably the most complex of the Episode I costumes for the queen. It looks quite simple in terms of shape; in terms of construction it was quite a complex dress to make. It started off being built onto a frame with sort of a canvas undergarment. The whole thing was almost like an upside-down ice cream cone in shape, with lots of panels being reinforced with a thing called crinoline steel, which kept the shape quite rigid. Originally, I was making the dress in velvet. I changed from that and used a red silk. I think it was between 20 and 30 panels, and it took about two months to make. It was quite a long process, because it had to be really precise. There were hanging panels, and the collar — there was a Chinese Imperial feel. The other big influence was Art Nouveau, and you can mix influences. It was a favorite of mine. Now there would be lots of different ways to light it, but then there were less. So it had a great big battery, but you can’t see that, so that was good. [Laughs]

man i am so proud of my clone boys post but ppl are having the weirdest takes in the tags and the comments... i'm grateful for getting interactions but idk what to do with these opinions lol. I'm just going to assume they're not talking to me🤐
I shared it on fb and one of my friends must have kept reading the other clone posts bc he just wanted to talk about umbara and complain about pong krell. Haha okay sure dude, i love talking pong, but what about these tragic lil boys and ian's brutal takedown of them omggg
Me: ian says the clones don't have souls but we shouldn't judge them, my heart can't stand it, look how cute and unlucky they are😢 I, too, am cute and unlucky, a bleak drone in a cruel world [cough me revealing subtext on main cough]
Internet people: *immediately judging them, talking about krell and kylo for some reason, subtweeting jj abrams, wanting to fight me i think?*
guys I am too bleak and sensitive to fight you, can't a girl simply worship ian mccaig in peace

off the rack #1314
Monday. December 28, 2020
I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. These few comic books are thanks to the generosity of fellow fan Doug.
Batman/Catwoman #1 - Tom King (writer) Clay Mann (art) Tomeu Morey (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). Well surprise, surprise. I really liked this first issue. Someone doubted that I would because I wasn't a fan of Tom King's recent stories but this one I enjoyed immensely and not just because of how Clay draws Selina. My favourite storyline in the Batman run was the relationship between Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Bruce Wayne/ Batman and it still is. I really wanted them to get married. This story jumps back and forth in time and involves Catwoman's complicated relationships with the hero and the villains. I hope I get to finish this new Black Label series.
Action Comics #1027 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) John Romita Jr. (pencils) Klaus Janson (inks) Brad Anderson (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters).  The House of Kent story concludes with the Superman Family winning the day and defeating the Red Cloud. Too bad the new owner of the Daily Planet and mastermind behind the Invisible Mafia, Marisol Leone, escapes justice. I hear Brian Michael Bendis is leaving this book and that some fans are happy with that news. As big a Bendis fan as I am I thought this story sucked. Not even better art would have saved it in my opinion. Even the shocking development on the last page was dumb. I hope the next creative team does a better job on this book.
Iron Man #1 to #4 - Christopher Cantwell (writer) Cafu (art) Frank D'Armata (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). You can't keep a good Iron Man down. Here I thought Tony Stark was dead. He's back on the racks and teamed up with Patsy Walker/Hellcat in this latest reboot and the first 4 issues were oaky. I stopped reading Iron Man a while back so I don't know who the new A.I. is that he talks to but it goes by B.O.S.S. How he hooks up with Patsy is another mystery to me. Tony has reinvented himself after being resurrected from the dead and he fights a bunch of old foes. His biggest challenge is a new version of Korvac. Remember him? I don't. For straight super hero versus super villains fare, this is okay, middle of the road comics.
Batman Black and White #1 - James Tynion IV, J. H. Williams III, G. Willow Wilson, Emma Rios and Paul Dini (writers) Tradd Moore, J. H. Williams III, Greg Smallwood, Emma Rios and Andy Kubert (art). I call books like this vanity projects. They're written and illustrated in an artsy fartsy way that is pretentious to me. When it comes to Batman I'm more of a blue collar kind of fan and these stories feel more like they should be in a snooty art gallery. The stories are accompanied by creator bios and I found the first two to be worth reading but I didn't read all of them, kind of like how I stop reading the little plaques at the art gallery that goes with the art on the wall after a few. $5.99 US for four short stories in black and white seems steep to me.
Batman #103 - James Tynion IV (writer) Guillem March, Carlo Pagulayan  & Danny Miki (art) David Baron (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). The cover is a blatant bait and switch. It says "Ghost-Maker vs. Clownhunter" but it's really Ghost-Maker vs. Batman as Bruce tries to keep Ghost-Maker from killing Clownhunter. The best part of this issue was Harley Quinn's appearance.
Batman #104 - James Tynion IV (writer) Guillem March, Bengal, Ryan Benjamin  & Danny Miki (art) David Baron (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). I like this Ghost-Maker guy. He wears a headband. I wonder if he still wears one under his helmet. So Ghost-Maker sedated Batman, Harley and Clownhunter last issue and now has them tied up in Arkham Asylum. He left Clownhunter unfettered with a sword handy to kill Harley with. Uh-oh.
Batman #105 - James Tynion IV (writer) Alvaro Martinez  & Christian Duce, Carlo Pagulayan  & Danny Miki (art) David Baron (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). Does Clownhunter kill Harley? Does Ghost-Maker kill Batman? Read this conclusion to "Ghost Stories" to find out. Get ready to roll your eyes.
Superman #27 & #28 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Ivan Reis (pencils) Danny Miki (inks) Alex Sinclair (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters). The last 2 parts of "Mythological" where Superman fights Synmar came to a grinding, groaning stop. This is the type of story that helps explain why some people get turned off super hero comics. It's just a bunch of big punch-'em-ups and then the good guy wins in the end. And can we get a consistent depiction of the Phantom Zone please? Is it a dimension where the bad guys are phantoms existing in null space or just another dimension where the bad guys live basically like they used to, like in this story? I hate when creators change things to suit their plots. I don't blame fans for grumbling about Bendis after reading this multi-parter.
Detective Comics #1030 - Peter J. Tomasi (writer) Bilquis Evely (art) Mat Lopes (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). Rob Leigh (letters). The grassroots movement to rid Gotham City of masked vigilantes doesn't make me care for the Bat Family more because it sure feels like a contrived plot device. The plotline that I'm much more interested in is Damian's poking around his dad's old case files. That's the kind of detective work I like.
Detective Comics #1031 - Peter J. Tomasi (writer) Bilquis Evely (art) Mat Lopes (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). Rob Leigh (letters). This issue is reflective of events that happened during the recent US presidential election. Anti-Bat and pro-Bat supporters clash and only in comic books can Batman defuse the volatile situation with a noble speech. Meanwhile, Damian quickly finds the person guilty of sweeping the cold cases of the attacks on Bruce Wayne in the past under the rug and brings them to justice. The perp's real identity offers a clue to the villain who shows up at the end of this issue.
Detective Comics #1032 - Peter J. Tomasi (writer) Brad Walker (pencils) Andrew Hennessy (inks) Dave McCaig (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). Father and son set aside their feud to save the rest of the Bat Family from the latest super villain that has them in his clutches. No mystery who the bad guy is with the cover for this issue being a ginormous spoiler. Yes, Hush is back and he's got a great new scheme to hurt Batman.
Superman Special #1 - Andy Lanning & Ron Marz (writers) Phil Hester & Ande Parks (art) Hi-Fi (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters). Flashback sequence Marco Santucci (art) Arif Prianto (colours) A Larger World's Troy Peteri (letters). This is part 3 of "Endless Winter" which is DC's version of the finale of the Game of Thrones TV show. It's pretty straight forward. The heroes fight giant ice creatures. The end. I wouldn't spend money on this rack filler.

MTG Artist Interview: Iain McCaig
Tumblr media
Iain McCaig is certainly no stranger to Magic art. He’s been producing pieces for Magic for years, but it’s but awhile since we’ve seen him. But he made a hugely triumphant return in Throne of Eldraine with some absolutely fabulous works. Today I am happy to present to you a closer look at Iain and one of his most recent MTG pieces!
Daniel: Hi Iain! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your artistic process with us fans. Your work is outstanding! How long have you been doing art for Magic: the Gathering?
Iain: Hey Daniel! Thanks for the kind words. I did my first set of Magic Cards soon after the change of the millennium—2002, if I remember rightly.
D: For those of us who love your work, where can we find more of your artwork (outside of your Magic pieces)?
I: Actually, these days most folk know me for concept artwork for the film industry. I designed Darth Maul and Queen Amidala and tons of other Star Wars characters, and contributed to Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers franchise for Marvel. But I’ve also done games like Titanfall and an album cover for Jethro Tull, illustrated the first choose-your-own-adventure books and even animated for Sesame Street cartoons. Here’s my IMDb page, for the insatiably curious: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0564572/).
I have parallel careers as a screenwriter, author-illustrator and film-maker too. That might sound like I’ve got several different Iains inside my head, but those jobs are just different ways of being a storyteller, and we wants to do ‘em all, my precious!
D: Is there one Magic world or character that if given the chance you’d love to paint?
I: Yes! I would love to create an entire new universe for Magic: the Gathering! And write the stories to go with ‘em (WOTC, are you listening?)!
D: Let’s talk about one of your current pieces for Throne of Eldraine - Workshop Elders. Tell us about your process for painting this piece.
I: My process is always driven by the STORY, and all the usual stuff that fires up our empathy and curiosity and imaginations.
Tumblr media
Take the faery on her treasure horde in ‘Gleaming Regalia’. Cynthia Shepard, my Art Director on this series, said that the faery was basking in the joy of shiny treasure, her eyes fixed on one particularly one bright-looking thing. So maybe she’s uber-greedy, like Smaug, lollygagging on a mountain of treasure. Greed is fun to depict, but I was much more interested in a Jekyll and Hyde tug-of-war, so I made her a ‘treasure addict’. Her expression is gleaming but possessed. She’s trapped by her new shiny, but we know from all the equally amazing stuff in her treasure horde that it won’t satisfy her for long. Kind of like me with a good cup of coffee, only a lot harder to come by.
Tumblr media
Most of that, I work out as I sketch. My fingers are always smarter than I am. They tap into my subconscious and throw story twists and turns into the drawing to keep me entertained, and all I have to do is be sharp enough to recognize when something magical has happened. I send several of those in to Cynthia, and she unerringly picks the one I want to draw the most (one of her many mutant powers).
Tumblr media
Then begins the work of making a drawing from my imagination look real. I’ve documented this process many times before, but in a nutshell, it’s a three-step thing: first, the imagination drawing. Second, studies from real life to augment my imagination with observation: anatomy and lighting and costumes and such. Third, combine the first and second steps into a third and final drawing, which—if I’ve done my work right on the other two, is a performance—I virtually become the character I’m making (woe betide anyone who enters my studio when I am creating monsters!).
Tumblr media
I drew ‘Gleaming Regalia’ with pencil on paper, but painted it in Photoshop. I usually prefer traditional paint media, but when deadlines howl at the door, there’s nothing like super-digital powers.
Tumblr media
One last note: during the real life study phase, I like to use real people. It’s a Norman Rockwell thing: inducing friends and family and random folk with great faces to pose. I was particularly lucky with both ‘Gleaming Regalia’ and ‘Feathered Artisans’. My wonderful niece and her equally wonderful best friend obligingly transformed themselves into elderly magical craftswomen, while the latter also doubled as the treasure-possessed faery. My gratitude (and virtual oscars) to both!
Tumblr media
Thank you to Iain for this great behind the scenes look at your process and also for contributing to the amazing world of Eldraine! Hope to talk to you again soon!

When the storyboard artists did the Eden scene, do you think they knew who the actors were going to be? Because the faces are kind of accurate, but the bodies? Baffling. Boggling. Bewildering. I'm so glad they didn't cast those body types.
I think it’s very obvious that they had David Tennant in mind for Crowley since it’s very apparent on the boards, more so than Michael Sheen in my opinion. The artist has also worked with the director on Doctor Who, so maybe he’s just better at drawing DT? Or no one has been cast yet but the artist just really wants DT to play Crowley and he just drew him in and got his wish fulfilled (yes artists can do that, Iain McCaig taught me XD). As for the bodies...the artist does have more experience working on superhero movies/TV/games so I’m guessing that’s how he naturally draws at this point haha, or he’s inspired by old oil paintings where the archangels are fighting Lucifer and they’re all muscular......anyways I think it’s more of a drawing preference than a strict direction like “you have to make them REALLY BUFF” 😂

Green Arrow (Vol 6) #1
Writer - Benjamin Percy
Art - Otto Schmidt
Cover - Juan Ferreyra
Variant Cover - Neal Adams, Kevin Nowlan & Dave McCaig
“The Death and Life of Oliver Queen” Part 1
Still on the heels of the Underground Men, human traffickers and all-around creepy guys, Green Arrow and Black Canary find a connection to Queen industries.  When Oliver starts to poke around, he opens a can of worms that may lead to his own death.
This directly follows on from the relaunch issue Green Arrow: Rebirth. The Underground Men are very creepy in ghoulish masks and and goggles along with black outfits that make them seem like they should be working in Doctor Frankenstein’s lab. The mystery surrounding them is really very compelling, but the connection to Queen Industries just seems a little too cliche. We’ve seen this particular story element so many times in versions of Green Arrow or Iron Man in the past where a corporate “babysitter” of an executive is using the business to fund and conceal nefarious plans. i’m kind of willing to let this slide a bit as this is a jumping on point for the new rebirth continuity and has the intention of bringing new readers into the fold, but it really should have been done with a more original storyline. I was kind of impressed and surprised by the end of the issue since it leaves readers on a cliffhanger that i didn’t really expect.
The quieter character-driven scenes between Ollie and Dinah, or Emi are very good.  They have a nice chemistry and it makes you like these characters and want to read more about them and their adventures.  Percy is also bringing Ollie back to the more liberal, publicly conscious version of the character from some time ago.  Ollie’s currently handing it with a bit of naivité and gets some pushback from Dinah on his philanthropy. Percy also brings back the character of Henry Fyff from the New 52 era as Ollie’s computer support guy. I can’t say I expected him to make a return appearance.
I found Otto Schmidt’s art better this issue than in the Rebirth one-shot.  While he really excels at the creepy Underground Men, the regular looking people are much better here.  There’s still an angularity to his faces which can be a negative - especially for Black Canary who come off as looking angry quite a bit. Mostly I found this an improvement.
Special call-out to an excellent variant cover by Neal Adams.  I feel this really captures Ollie in the uniform!
An interesting start to this series, overall.  I was engaged enough with the characters that I’m looking forward to seeing how this story plays out.

I went over today to that Lightbox Expo they’re having over at the Pasadena Convention Center-- or I guess it’s done by now-- here’s a photo of a Wacom ad I saw there since I was like “oh cool Corey Lewis”, a photo to help me remember where to park, a photo of Commander Riker I had on my phone, and a photo of a poster board, I don’t know, I always forget to take photos.
What a pleasant show, though-- it’s a show just for visual artists.  And not too crowded, so if you wanted to go bother Mike Mignola or William Stout or whoever, they just were hanging around.  (That new William Stout book covering his whole career is really something incidentally, if you’re into Stout or movie art or whatever).
Some guest list, too, if you’re into drawings anyways-- Claire Wendling in from France; Ian McCaig who did tons of the Star Wars concept art; the guy who heads all the art for the most of the Marvel movies; oodles and oodles of young artists (all that colorful happy stuff-- the millennials are so happy and whimsical with their drawings-- why don’t any of them want to grow up to be Polish movie poster artists or whatever???  It’s always like... “What if there were a delicately colored drawing of two pretty girls who celebrated friendship with some forest spirits”... Down with youth!  Up with Polish movie posters!).  But all those people, and not all jammed on top of one another in some super-depressing artists alley-- like just a couple reasonable-sized rooms and it felt like ... I found it very cozy.  There were some comic people but not really that many (they were apparently pretty discriminating about who they took, I guess), and any comic people there were sort of balanced out by animators and sculpture people and in one case, there was a pretty naked-looking lady getting her body all painted up, I wasn’t really sure what was going on there, but... kudos.  Like, a real full range of “entertainment”-related art...
Or that sign’s for one of the three or four (?) portfolio review areas.  Portfolio reviews by J. Scott Campbell or Eric Canete or I want to say I remember seeing Ronnie Del Carmen’s name on one of the boards.  Paul Tobin.  I mean, you could ask worse people for portfolio reviews--you could ask the Grim Sleeper serial killer for a portfolio review, and he wouldn’t have any good advice for your portfolio.  He’d probably just try to kill you-- that was his thing. Graeme wrote up an article about all the panels they had, but I didn’t really see any of those.  It just seemed well run and very chilled out cause it was just a bunch of drawing nerds and aspiring artists and not like... It didn’t have comics sweat all over it.
I don’t really buy stuff because I don’t like owning things, but stuff was for sale (though I didn’t really see a lot of people doing commissions like at a con or whatever-- I’m pretty oblivious though generally speaking, so maybe I just missed all that).  The thing that snagged me on the way out was that Stuart Ng table though--  they had a bunch of stuff, but it  was that new Thierry Martin book  Dernier Souffle?  I will miss my money, which I like infinitely more than pleasure, but... Yeah, that one snagged me hard, instead of like... Something directly from an artist, which would’ve probably been “more supportive of the community” or whatever, but... (Apparently Souffle may have some Chris Samnee art in there somewhere too, a pinup or I don’t know what-- pretty snazzy).
Anyways, pleasant time; pleasant show; if any of you are super-A+ artists, thing you might want to calendar for yourself to go to next year.  Also if any of you are naked ladies who like to get painted, please send photos of your armpits.  But not to the Grim Sleeper!  Not advisable!
