Silly concept but... Nico has always gone against expectations. It's his whole shtick. He defies conventions.

So, it turns out Nico's fear of his feelings had nothing to do with growing in the homophobic 40s and more to do with the fact that every gay lover in mythology is turned into a plant or animal, and he's already tried the dandelion and corn cob life, thank you very much, better remain closetted.

Percy later reminds him that most of those were lovers of gods, definitely outliers... Nico kisses him ("Huh, I'm still human, neat!") and Percy maybe has to correct that statement, because now it's him that turned into a tomato.
