Oops! All Updates (and Fixes)!

I've got a bunch of fixes and updates to some of my older mods and I decided to release them all in a batch. Please read below for the details to see what has been changed and then links to the files to redownload and replace in your game.

If this is your first time downloading, obviously you'll need to download everything and you should read the original post for more information.

As always, let me know if any issues and enjoy!

Voidcritters Mod

Fixed Read Card Stats animation

Added a new interaction to allow your sims to talk about and compare their cards. Sims will build relationship, gain skill and train their critters a little as well (the cards will vibrate as the critters train up)

Giving a rare or limited edition card to another Sim will yield a higher relationship boost.

Previously there was no way to get all 22 cards in the game as you only get one of the two Limited Edition cards. I've fixed that by adding the chance to also get Limited Edition cards by reading a Voidcritters comic book. There's a 25% chance if you have less than level 8 skill and 45% if 8 or higher.

Now that Sims can collect all cards, I've added a new skill opportunity. Sims that collect all the cards will get the Critter Collector reward and going forward their cards will be worth more.

Student Council Mod

The Collect Signatures interaction now has a more appropriate animation of a sim collecting signatures

Increased the chances that more inactive council members will autonomously raise funds and collect signatures

The campaign tracker will no longer show blank information after you've closed out and restarted the game

All campaign icons will now show up in the notifications

Fixed an issue where the Sim would reset when submitting signatures for the Teacher Pay school campaign

Reduced the skilling level for council roles while at the afterschool activity

Hang Out Mod

Children and teens can now hang out in groups. Simply click on one of the two Sims hanging out and select “Hang Out with X and his/her friends” (you need to have LTR 30 or higher)

A child or a teen hanging out can also invite another friend to join them

I think you can have up to 8 Sims given that I have 7 in the photo and there's still room.

Added liking VFX and speech bubbles when hanging out

Washer+Dryer Combo

I created a new mesh for the washer/dryer so it slots under the counter like dishwashers and trash compactors.

Added a stacked washer/dryer tower. This still uses the same script as the single appliance so you can’t run the washer and the dryer at the same time.

Changed out the pod and detergent box meshes

Important: If you have the old version, you need to replace with this or remove it. You can't have both the old version and this one in your game or it will CTD. Also, the script is in the Combo file so you still need to download both if you only want the stacked tower version.

Private Clinic (BASE)

The clinic controller will now push Sims that have certain traits as well, such as Neurotic, Commitment Issues, Insane, Hotheaded, etc.

Once pushed to the clinic, Sims will find a chair to sit in and then wait for an hour to be seen by a doctor. After an hour, they will stop waiting with an annoyed message (you can still see them though).

Waiting patients now identified with a custom headline effect

Prenatal vitamins no longer have a weight loss effect (as I'm putting a similar feature in the breastfeeding aspect of the obgym module, it's not needed here)

Updated the Buy and Sell Pills animations

Updated the comically large horsepill mesh to make it smaller and more realistic. The animation has been updated as well

Updated the write prescription animation

Updated the apply ointment animation

Private Clinic - Psychiatry

Updated the therapist session animations – therapist will now take more notes to jot down how crazy you are

Updated the patient records layout to avoid text overflow

Sims can now do their coping mechanisms (breathing exercises and mindfulness) while sitting

I know he's a long way away but do you have any thoughts on Executor the Ex Foedere? I really love Executor so I'm curious to hear your thoughts (if you have any).

I'm going to be honest: I did not think very highly of Execu2r when he first came out.

It wasn't because he was bad. My issue with him was that the existing Reapers La Pluma and Highmore were already excellent at doing a Reaper's job: sweeping up waves of trash while self-sustaining with their heal. This was made easy by Highmore and La Pluma having the same S1, a double hit auto activation skill with only 2 SP cost. You could put them down and ignore them as they swept up crowds, while their S1s made sure they could keep their health up.

FedEx on the other hand, put the double strike as a chance-based part of his talent while his skills focused on dealing damage. They're still attack-recovery like La Pluma and Highmore's S1s, but with much higher skill costs (8/12/24). While they do good AOE damage and let EX Fedora push further beyond the other two Reapers (you might have seen his solo clear on Patriot's stage, though it involved getting lucky with talent RNG), the combined opportunity cost of being a 6 star (and thus much more expensive to raise) while attempting to directly compete with other Guards with AOE like Blaze and Gavial while being unable to be healed and needing to attack to charge his skills left me wondering why I should bother.

"if I need a Reaper, i have Reapers raised. If I need to push for higher damage, I'll just bring a Centurion I can heal, it's quite rare that a Reaper uses the entire range of their wide swing anyway' is what I thought at the time.

However, his new module is uh. it's pretty wild.

+60 ATK and +7 ASPD is very nice, but I want you to look at the scaling of his module. Level 2 grants 150 DEF ignore on the second hit while boosting its base chance to proc by +10%, then level 3 doubles the DEF ignore to 300 while increasing the base chance by another 5%. This means that Federico.EXE can hit 100% double swing rate by spending 13 ammo instead of 16, which is a massive boost to his S2 (12 ammo but refund 1 bullet every time you dodge) and his S3 (start with 16 ammo). With the 300 DEF ignore from his 2nd swing, this is a big increase to his overall power and thus his competitiveness.

If you want to use Executor The Former Friendere, I would still recommend to use SP supports in the form of Stainless or Ch'en to make his skills more reliable, but he's definitely able to sweep stages with ease now. I'm waiting for someone to do showcases with his modded S2 and S3 specifically, S3 hitting 100% chance to double shot BEFORE he runs out of ammo is going to be so rad.

"Jimin take her out of here," Thirteen yelled in a fit of anger. His tone emanated so much authority that the blonde moved automatically. Thirteen was too explosive issuing his friend's real name, realizing that these were used when anxiety really clouded their judgment. He stepped up to my position and carefully stood up with his hand on my forearm. Fear began to take hold as too persistent an intruder, thoughts of what he would do in the state he was in. I knew that Jimin was also close to my mental debate since, despite blindly obeying, there was a moment when I caught him looking back.

My footsteps were awkward making it difficult to move down the hall. The discomfort was palpable in the air. Jimin decided to make a pact of silence and say nothing. I had many questions. Too many.

And by a demon, they were supposed to be high-security prisons. How was it possible for prisoners to walk through their halls without any surveillance?

It took a little over a minute for me to realize as we crossed the doors of my module that we were heading to my cell.

At the door, Jimin took a card (which until then he thought only the guards had) out of his pocket, passed it through the sensor and the bars slid free access.

"Come in." He didn't give me much choice either, since the arm he was holding me with pushed me slightly forward so that he would enter.

Feet rushing to the ground made me turn toward the bunks. Distracting me enough so that I didn't see Jimin leave silently.

“Where were you?” Despite the darkness obscuring the larger view of the cell, I was able to locate her by her husky voice. Lucy stood in front of me with disheveled hair and covering her mouth while yawning. When he realized how I looked his eyes widened to the point of almost shooting out of their sockets. He put his hands on my shoulders and started talking in a rush. "My God, Blair. What happened? What did Shanghai ask of you? And why did Graff forcibly bring you in?"

“Don't you know?” I asked too confused. Surprised by the stability of my voice when in just a few minutes I did not have the strength to say a word. It was as if my body had dried up and I no longer had anything to spill. Wipe my nose with the sleeve when I snort my own tears. Lucy slowly shook her head as a disoriented expression dominated her face.

It was there that my head began to collapse. Nothing made sense. If Lucy knew nothing, then how had Thirteen found out?

"You really haven't talked to Thirteen?"

Lucy frowned quite confused.

"Why should I speak to him?"

"Didn't you tell him anything?"

"But why should I have told him anything? He is just ..."

"He's your brother," I said, not realizing that I had voiced my thoughts out loud. I relaxed my eyebrows when perceiving how little by little the skin of the face of Lucy lost its natural color turning of a too disturbing pale white.

"Not him, not him ..."

"Lucy, nothing's wrong, okay? I'm not going to tell anyone."

Resigned I end up lowering the tension of the shoulders. The next thing she did was sigh too overwhelmed.

"Actually ..." he continued with a suspensive air, however, he ended by biting his lip. It took a couple of seconds as if the words he wanted to say were the most difficult to pronounce. "... he is my stepbrother. But what difference does it make. Whether we have the same blood or not, I love him the same. I always take care of myself. .. "

“From whom?” I asked, quite interested in his silence. I was pretty sure someone's name came next. Specifically, one that apparently had a lot to do with her.

"That doesn't matter now. Wait." He observed me in a nervous blink. I raised my eyebrows quite receptive to his change in mood. "Thirteen knows you know?"

"Yes," I whispered.

“What?” He opened his mouth so wide that I swore his jaw would snap off at any moment. She seemed so shocked by the fact that Thirteen had allowed (or ignored) her knowing his secret. For a moment, I managed to see a shadow of confusion across his face that dissipated when an idea crossed his mind. One that would tell me slowly. "Who helped you?"

"What do you mean?" I tried to sound disoriented but I knew very well where I wanted to take the conversation, which I could not allow under any circumstances.

“Whose money did you give to Shanghai?” Seriously, he didn't show one iota of compassion for my attempt to shy away from his questions. What's more, I dared to take one of my hands. I squeeze her to tell me she wouldn't judge me, that she just wanted me to respond. But I did not speak, not because I did not bring him into the conversation, but because I did not see completely honestly speaking openly about our strange pact. Because it was so. There was no other word to describe it.

The metallic noise in the bars made us both start. When I turned my eyes towards the entrance to my cell, I managed to recognize the perpetrator perched with my fingers holding tight.

"Come out, we have to talk." His voice was rough, materializing the anger that was still present. Squint my eyes for any grimace or gesture that could give me a clue of how he is currently doing. He was so intimidating to me despite not seeing him well because of the poor lighting. My shoulders instantly fell into a shy dance before his piercing gaze.

Lucy seemed to understand almost instantly what was happening because she approached him and spoke with determination.

"You better get back to your cell. It's late and Blair needs to rest."

Thirteen hit one of the bars that was near my friend's face, but she was impassive. She reacted, as if she was used to her explosive mood swings. From one moment to the next she was petrified with something she saw. After two minutes of angry looks, Thirteen gave me a clear look of annoyance at my vague collaboration and turned away from the bars as if they would burn to the touch.

The last thing I remembered before I closed my eyes to sleep was that look full of fire and something else that I couldn't distinguish. He seemed upset, not because of what he had (thankfully) stopped, but because of something that seemed to press against his chest. My stomach started to buckle just at the thought. He had gone back to see if he was okay.

Did he care more than he said?

Actually, I wasn't very hungry. The appetite had not appeared at breakfast and seemed to continue to disappear at the meal. He hadn't slept well either. I couldn't get my eyes off Thirteen. Also, as if things were going from bad to worse, Lucy had changed her attitude towards me. It was coarser, full of irony, and sometimes quite cold.

"Don't get me wrong but I don't like you to know that," the last part whispered, bringing his head closer to me. I stopped playing with my plastic fork, placing it on my tray very slowly. Lucy was so serious with such drama that I began to wonder if she was really angry. "When a secret starts to be three, the chances of it being known increase considerably."

"Are you a statistician now?"

"Blair, shit, this is serious."

"I know it's serious." Thirteen explained it to me. Besides, I also swore not to tell anyone to reassure myself that I am not going to open my mouth.

“Since when have you been so confident?” He ironic, rolling his eyes simultaneously. I was faithfully upset with the situation. I understood his reaction, that's fine, but he didn't have to treat me like that either. He knew there was something else behind his empathetic irony. I didn't really know if it was because of the tone used or because in the short time we had been living together, I had learned to decipher their facial expressions. I looked at her suddenly, surprised by what she had just confessed. She wasn't sure if she had wanted to broadcast it out loud or if her conscience had just betrayed her. But I was puzzled as I looked at her for some explanation. Lucy snorted in self-criticism at her verbal escape.

"Too much what?" Truthfully, his tone had sounded like he was really telling me he was sorry for me. It had bothered me greatly knowing that he had me as a helpless little animal that all he knew how to do was cry, complain and tremble while the other stronger ones laughed at my weakness. I had always been considered weak. And I was already getting fed up with being treated like a glass figure. I didn't have big muscles to defend myself, but if it had helped me to be a spectator of my father's abuse for years, it was to be strong and pull forward.

Whatever it took.

Lucy seemed remorseful. Frowning as she watched me wail.

"Good," she whispered. This time it was I who frowned in amazement. "Thirteen is like a shark in a pool, you can take a bath with it. But you're never calm." She bit her lip anxiously as she squawked to the side to avoid my direct gaze. "You are too good for him. Damn Blair, don't screw yourself because ... This is not a pretty movie in which the boy ends up with the girl when he realizes that he has been fucking her and asks for forgiveness. This is real life, the fucking fucking life. After that, Lucy grabbed the ends of her tray tightly and stood up leaving me alone on the table. With the melancholic tones of his voice bouncing inside my head. A sporadic tear ran down my cheek in a dance too sad. My chest became so tight that my diaphragm could not move. Anxiety began to cloud my judgment without being able to avoid it. I did not understand his worried advice if it was clear that I would not fall so low. That is to say, it is true that Thirteen seemed to me an attractive man but that did not mean that I was falling in love with him.

Due to its proximity, I could feel the touch of his shirt and how his chest put mine on the edge. I forced myself to stay stable but it was so difficult.

"Why what?" My breath unintentionally bounced off the fluffy skin of her lips. Leaving him a little stunned by the temperature change, his gaze left me still. Little by little her iris ate the brown of her eyes, with an almost wild look, so attractive that I was determined to crush my cheek against the wall to nervously avoid it. Everything around me was unimportant when I dazzled small bruises with traces of dried blood on the tips of his knuckles. OMG. I bit my lip to catch the shake. I started breathing through my mouth.

"I did what seemed best to me." I breathed out, my voice hoarse as I tried to keep my tone steady.

"Since when is sucking your fucking dick a good idea?"

He slammed his hand on the wall making a sound so sudden I ended up jumping in my place. He seemed to be disturbed with every word he spoke. It was just at that moment when I remembered our first meeting, I couldn't help it, the images simply folded my thoughts. It was too illogical, too hypocritical, to think that the same person who was threatening me to do that was now screaming at me like crazy while rejecting my intentions to do so.

"Shit on me, Blair! Why didn't you tell me anything?"

"Why do I have to tell you about my life if you don't tell me about yours?"

I regretted. I fucking regretted the instant his eyes claimed mine with fury. He approached me with clean strides to corner me again. This time, with greater intensity. His legs held mine together to prevent any movement that was not in his plans. Rushing her mouth close to my face. Shortening her arm to improve her bullying. His bicep bulged in the process, decreasing the space between my head and his.

"Because I don't have shit up to my neck. Because I'm not stupid enough to mess with a psycho bitch. And above all, because I'm not such an asshole to get into the same problem over and over again."

"You always get in trouble, don't you?"

"It's different," he seemed so distant, turning his gaze to one side. His outlined jaw came to light showing me how tense he was.

"How is it different?" I raised an eyebrow, my lips tightening in response to his daze. Okay, I knew from my own experience that provoking him was not a good idea, but there was no point in what he said. Let's see, if it is true that it does not make me the smartest person in the world to always mess with the same girl, adding the fact that as he says is wrong in his head, but from there to have to throw a face at me that always has. It could be perfectly mistaken for an ice figure if it weren't for his nose moving agitatedly while breathing hard. He really is angry. "I couldn't get that information out of that son of a bitch because he hardly had his teeth in his place. But you, if you can tell me, be a good girl and collaborate."

I couldn't think lucidly, or rather, it was his hot breathing that completely blocked me. I admit that the passage from his screams to his conciliatory whisper was something that affected me greatly. But the problem is still there, a problem that is not mine and therefore I cannot speak about it. And fuck it if you want to get mad, friendship with Lucy is the only thing that keeps me sane in this prison of the devil.

“Did you tell Shanghai I asked you for money?” I asked, lengthening the greatest tone of intrigue I could have emitted. Thirteen tensed again. Suddenly his jaw clenched and his shoulders came together. Notice how nervous he was when unstable little vibrations began to spring from his breathing. My accusing gaze never left his, making it clear, in case there was any doubt, that if his answer was affirmative, the conversation would take a much more unpleasant course.

"Who told you that?" He asked, narrowing his eyes.

"Isn't it obvious?" I clarified with an irony that was too marked. "Besides, why do you have to tell that crazy woman about me when you finish ..." I forced my lips to close before continuing to stain my vocabulary with that shape. Even though I didn't finish my sentence I was sure that Thirteen had perfectly gotten the message from the way her eyebrows slowly rose.

“What?” He seemed confused by the hint of weakness in his voice.

Simply, I dedicated myself to admire his facility to lie. And yes damn, I will not deny that now the one who is angry is me. On top, adding the impudence that he shows by continuing to deny something that he knows does not have two fingers in front of him.

"Really, I don't care where you decide to shove your fucking dick. You can think about those things, still, about this shit of a place, but was it really necessary to name me? Find another topic of conversation next time."

Try leaving. Take two steps toward the patio doors. However, his hand was placed on the wall right next to my head, getting in the way of my advance. Suddenly, I feel like a much larger surface than mine completely covers my hand. Thirteen withdraws my fingers little by little until I finally have control of my wrist. At any moment, he places it by sticking it against the wall above my head leaving me too exposed. I gasp, my stomach sinking as he leans his mouth toward my ear. The warm contrast of his lips with my warm skin only leaves the area standing on end.

Universal Grammar by Noam Chomsky and why I can’t agree with it.

-Note= I messed up and forgot to upload this yesterday. This new schedule will take some getting used to but regardless, I messed up.

Continuing with the linguistics theme I am going to talk about an old but prevalent concept in first-language development. And for once this isn’t actually related to an assessment so I’m not cheating. It is however still research. See, in one of my modules this term I am learning about how children learn their first language which is fascinating, but I’ve had an issue with my lecturer’s acceptance and emphasis on Universal Grammar. I just can’t accept the concept.

So what is Universal Grammar? Well first of all I want you to think of the English Language; if you are reading this then chances are you are comfortable with it. It’s a bitch of a language that is made up from Celtic, Latin, various Germanic languages, French and way, way more. We have verbs, regular and irregular, auxiliary verbs, two tenses and another, separate way of talking about the future; we have inflections, articles and that’s just scratching the surface. How the hell does a child even begin to learn all of this?

Well an advantage they have over an adult is being a blank slate, but that’s my opinion. Linguist Noam Chomsky (a name I can rarely remember) put forth this idea of Universal Grammar where there is a genetic element that gives humanity it’s ability to create, use and learn language, specifically the grammar. In this hypothesis, the words and their meanings are a separate matter entirely and have to be learned without this genetic benefit.

This is how I can best explain it without copying my teacher’s words: there are a number of slots within this Universal Grammar, some of which may conflict with others, and as children are exposed to a language some of these slots are filled. Using an example from a previous article, English uses a Subject Verb Object (SVO) word order, where Japanese uses a Subject Object Verb word order. These are two different sets of rules and for an English-learning child only the SVO slots will be filled and for a Japanese-learning child only the SOV slots will be filled. The way I’ve described this may actually make it harder for you to understand my own way of thinking, but basically I disagree with this.

One of the reoccurring arguments I’ve heard for this is that of the Poverty of the Stimulus. People don’t speak good. People use contractions, they mis-pronounce words and get the order wrong, so how on Earth do children learn to use English? Well first of all, they don’t. It is often blamed on technology, but really the fact that an increase in children beginning school with severely lacking language skills is due to parent negligence. They don’t talk to their children or read to them or encourage conversation; technology is just an excuse.

-Note= yes, a number of these articles use the same source, but we all know that news companies are biased so hopefully a few different views will be appreciated.

But the above links are not there to support Chomsky’s hypothesis, they actually contradict it. If Universal Grammar is why children, even when lacking the appropriate stimulus, can acquire language properly then why are there children who are not learning it? Well I’ll admit, that’s not damning evidence. It’s about as damning as Universal Grammar is convincing.

So my lecturer seems to believe that Universal Grammar is correct because she can’t see how children can learn the rules of grammar if there is Poverty of the Stimulus, which to me is the logical fallacy “argument from incredulity”: she can’t believe it, so she supports Universal Grammar. But I can believe it. Yes, people may not use language properly so children learn the “improper” rules like contractions or double-negatives. We see that. But good parents also read to their children and according to linguist William Labov, people will use standard (or correct) language when they are reading aloud. On top of that, even if the pronunciation is incorrect, the grammar will still be accurate in any decent book. And then the children learn to read themselves and thus have more experience; they watch cartoons and television, and cartoons and television directed for children have better grammar and pronunciation because the producers recognise that they may be the only stimulus that children will have. Then there is music, video games and so, so many different methods of language input that there is deluge of grammar for a child to learn from.

Of course, despite this there does seem to be a rising number of children not acquiring language properly, so I have to feel pity for these children. What kind of households are they growing up in?

There are other criticisms of course, it wouldn’t be science if someone didn’t object to it. Speaking of science, a claim has to be falsifiable. After all, science seeks to prove hypotheses incorrect rather than correct. A common example of this is the hypothesis “All swans are white”; can you imagine scouring the world to confirm this? But you can easily prove it wrong by finding a single black swan. Saying “Well you can’t prove me wrong” isn’t an argument in defence of something and where can you go from there? But guess what is a common argument for pseudosciences?

A critique of Universal Grammar is that it is unfalsifiable and thus a pseudoscience.

If I am to summarise, where arguments for Universal Grammar seem to linger on “But children can’t learn if people don’t talk good at them”, arguments against (or at least mine) are “But you ain’t looked at all the other fings that speak”. Humans are pattern recognition creatures, and children are blank slates, possibly making it easier for them to find these patterns because they don’t have all of the weird and incorrect patterns that adults have. At the end of the day, there seems to be little or no evidence for Universal Grammar, just incredulity that people can do what people do (which is learn), and how would we prove it incorrect anyway?

And finally, I don’t want this to be seen as a criticism of my lecturer. She’s good and she’s considerate and I’m really enjoying her lectures. It’s just this one sticking point about Universal Grammar. I wanted to look further into it anyway and I needed to upload something.

-Note= while reading in preparation for an assessment it came up that Chomsky thinks that creative and playful language is only possible through this genetic “Universal Grammar” (which is already bullshit), but surely a set of rules that program our very speech would limit such creative play? Surely learning grammar though experience would be what allows for this?

It’s been a week since I published this and I just can’t accept Chomsky’s ideas.

Home Automation for cheap, warm & damp free rental property.

I live in New Zealand, where most rental properties are poorly designed and constructed, resulting in homes that are damp, and expensive to heat during the colder months.

I am not looking to have a flame war about dampness and construction practices or even about owners or property managers obligations or the poor advice that national agency’s provide such as opening your windows to reduce dampness, yeah right!

I am simply looking at what I can do as a renter to assist with the health of my family; keeping them safe, healthy and warm are fundamental to me. With this objective in mind let’s get on with this post.

Over the last two winters I have actioned what I am recommending in this post and our resident asthma sufferer is grateful for these measures as they have had zero attacks at home during this time (which is amazing). We do not see ‘crying windows’ anymore. I have also seen power savings over the winter months as a result of the changes presented here.

Getting Started

So two years ago with mounting energy costs and health issues causing costly doctor trips and medical bills I started to consider what I can do to create a warm damp free environment for my family.

I noticed a few things:

We never had these issue when we lived in Sweden, or Switzerland which are cold and damp environments.

Humans are terrible at remembering to do things regularly on their own.

I could not hope to persuade the owners to stop dampness at its source.

Electric heaters and heat-pumps were good, gas and wood burners were bad.

I came up with a plan for living areas and a different one for bedrooms. I used one particular draught to suit my needs.

Prerequisites

To set up your environment you will need the following:

Always on internet accessed through WIFI

Android or IOS mobile device

Free mobile app for setting up Sonoff modules (ewelink)

An electric heater

A simple dehumidifier

2 Sonoff TH modules with sensor

2 Extension leads (2m ones are great)

Hopefully its only the Sonoff stuff and the power extensions in the last bullet point you will need to purchase making this really cheap for you.

DRAUGHT

As a rule I used standard draught exclusion techniques to prevent doors and windows passing through gales and allowing rain to come in. As a general rule I also keep doors to rooms that open to outside areas and damp areas such as bathrooms, showers, and toilets closed; particularly when trying to reduce the humidity and get the home warm. There is one draught that I had no chance to stop as it starts in the glassed conservatory and blows down two corridors and across an office, reaching the living room. Rather than stop this draught I chose to warm the air up and use it like a warm air ventilation stream, so even though we rarely go into the games room (what we call the conservatory) it has a heater in there to make sure the draught is spreading warm air throughout the house instead of cold.

When the house becomes dryer and warmer, I open bathroom doors, etc. so that they also slowly raise their temperature so going to the bathroom is not a major undertaking.

BEDROOMS

Each occupied bedroom has its own convection heater, as we found the oil filled heaters had annoying ‘ticking’ sound when cooling down that disturbed our sleep. The heaters have three settings 1 and a 2, and with both switched on making three options, I typically use the ‘2’ setting as this allows for a good consistent rise and fall of the heat and makes the room temperature more consistent with a balanced fast warm up when needed.

Each bedroom also has a dehumidifier, these are small compact (read “cheap”) and we get them for $150 NZD from Countdown. Make sure to get a dumb/simple dehumidifier that has a simple on/off switch only. This should have no preset humidity thresholds or electronic settings. You should be able to simply plug them in switch them on at the wall socket and they start their work, fancy ones with multiple functions that need a human to set them up every time they are powered up will not work for what we are trying to achieve.

I recommend that the bedrooms of asthma sufferers get set up first, then the other bedrooms, and finally the living areas as money allows. The dehumidifiers work in tandem with the heaters to dry the air which makes the air easier to heat, meaning the heaters barely need to come on to heat the room. the temperature rises as the humidity decreases. The dehumidifier is therefore the most important part as it both raises the temperature and is 400% cheaper to run than a heater for the same period. After much research and trail & error we have settled on the bedroom humidity and temperatures for sleeping as follows:

Sleep Humidity: 72 RH

Sleep Temp: 17.4 C

Awake Humidity: 55 RH

Awake Temp: 21.0 C

The awake temperature is only increased for bedrooms that are used often during the day such as kids rooms.

Now, to measure and control the humidity and temperature I use two Sonoff devices that can controlled using an android or iOS mobile app.

These Sonoff TH 10 (or TH 16) modules can be purchased cheaply from aliexpress, wish, banggood or ebay or direct from the manufacturer (http://www.itead.com). I recommend that initially you should get the 2 TH modules one for the dehumidifier and one for the heater. also get a sensor for each that plugs in the side.

The external sensor provides the temperature & humidity measurements (that’s what the ‘TH’ stands for) and can be set to trigger the unit to turn ON and OFF. Only one sensor is needed per room, as the Sonoffs use a scene based rule set that allows multiple scenes to be defined based on the temperature and humidity measurements. So, one sensor can be used to control many devices. For example a heater, dehumidifier, fan, air conditioner, etc...

I have found it very useful to use a power extension lead cut in half as the input and output for the Sonoff module. That way you can connect anything you want and enable power remotely, if you want it be fixed install then simply cut the plug off the device about 30 centimeters or a 12 inches from the end and bare the ends of the wires to connect them to the Sonoff modules using the Live, Neutral and Ground (Earth) connects.

Make sure to check the connection labels as the order may be subject to change.

WARNING

If you are not comfortable wiring plugs then do not attempt this yourself! ask a competent friend to do this for you instead.

Make sure the heater and the dehumidifier are in the ON position and then plug in the Sonoff to the mains power, now you should be able to remotely turn the devices ON and OFF locally using the button on the module.

Using the ewelink mobile application installed on your phone or tablet, setup the devices to turn on when the temperature or humidity is lower than desired and off when the target is reached. Then plug it all together and see it function automatically. By letting measurements trigger the use of the devices you will quickly find that it actually saves you money as well improves your health. As we know, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

As many of you will have noticed the Sonoff unit can also be controlled using Amazon, Alexa and Google home.

Next Time

In this post I focussed on the health aspects rather than pure cost savings; although I found I made savings even with this step as the consistency was key. The next post will look at the living areas and in-particular the living room where we have a heat pump and explain how we saved $150 NZD a month over winter on our power bills. Thats a whopping 25% off our bill every month!

Dorothy's Vision is coming soon, and with it, modules for Marksman snipers! Are any of those modules actually, like ... good? Except for having a little more attack so Exusiai can hit past defenses on the margins, the modules for snipers I have seem kinda lackluster. Is there something I'm not seeing?

Keep in mind the following list is my personal opinion

Marksman Modules added in Dorothy's Vision

Archetto - This module's much better than her second one coming later, but it's main usage is if you're using Archetto as a helidrop unit to attack with her skills right away. Not necessary, but +8 ASPD when there is a Ground Enemy in range and +4 ASPD from the level 3 module is actually quite nice on a Marksman with offensive recovery skills.

Ash - Garbage, don't bother (unless you want some more ATK). It's fine though because Ash is already a godlike Marksman and as a truly limited unit due to being from a collab, it would suck if she got a module that was actually really good.

Exusiai - I actually really like this one. The level 1 effect is completely pointless barring one enemy (Exusiai already melts all enemy drones that aren't Ursus Artillery Drones, which this module lets her kill), but the level 2 effect gives her 2 angel blessings instead of 1. I think this is actually pretty nice for people who intend to eventually run the upgraded Siegepipe as their new vanguard combo (a very common problem is that Exusiai's angel blessing is often wasted on a flagbearer, but Siegepipe fixes this, and having 2 blessings will buff them both)

Platinum - This will change nothing about Platinum, who's already very different from other Marksmen by prioritizing longer range and more powerful strikes vs rapidfire attacks. If you love Platinum she WILL do more damage with this mod though so why not.

May - HG were probably afraid of breaking her because she's so strong in IS, because unlike her fellow IS and 4 star friend Cutter who got an SP upgrade, May got... +2% ATK per module level. But hey, the module stats gives +3 ASPD and 4 star modules are so cheap I just upgrade them to level 3 without blinking so... why not?

Vermeil - Level 3 pushes her self SP regen bonus from +0.3 to 0.4, so assuming you have S2M3 her charge time goes from 15 seconds to... 14 seconds. It's literally nothing. +31 Base ATK is nice though, it's higher than what Archetto's getting with her level 3 module and she costs way more lmao.

Greythroat - Level 3 module taking her from 15% chance to crit to 21% is very sad, but the Level1 effect of +8 ASPD vs ground targets adds very nicely to her talent giving her +6 ASPD. As a Marksman rolling for crits, actually shooting more is quite good. I'd say keep it at level 1, only upgrade to max if you really like Greythroat because +6% crit chance is pathetic imo when fellow 5 star Sniper Meteorite got +20%. If I ignore ASPD bonuses from talent and mod (because im lazy), the 6% crit chance increase boosts Greythroat's expected normal attack DPS from 720 to 773, which is okay but could have been way better. At least be +10% crit chance HG come on.

April - If you actually use April you know that she's more of a specialist offclassing as a Marksman, and that boosting her talent can't go wrong when it's REALLY good. +8 ASPD vs ground targets is good, and level 3 module going from -20s redeploy time to -28s (a 40% increase!) and -1 DP cost to -2DP is good. I really like this one.

Kroos The Keen Glint - Kroos unfortunately got the anti-air module rather than the anti-ground one which puts her a bit behind Greythroat (I don't value the anti-air one as highly because it's very rare that Marksmen can't handle aerial enemies well enough already), and her module boosting her crit damage from 160% to 175% at Level 3 (im assuming she's max potential because she's a free unit) rather than her crit chance actually gives her a lower overall DPS increase than Greythroat's mod (Kroos' expected DPS goes from 761 to 778), but that doesn't take into account how Marksmen love dealing higher damage per hit, as their main enemy is getting over an enemy's DEF stat. If you like Kroos I wouldn't mind building this module. Crits have a funny way of scaling with certain buffs anyway.

CrossCode Review — Cross Out Some Time to Play This Gem

Radical Fish Games has risen the bar of quality in terms of the experience you can get in a retro-inspired indie game with CrossCode.

Having initially passed on the PC release of CrossCode back in 2018, when it was announced that this indie title from Radical Fish Games was coming to consoles, I knew I wasn’t going to make the same mistake. Having now seen it through, boy, oh boy, am I glad I didn’t skip out this time around because CrossCode is without a doubt one of the most expertly-crafted retro-inspired games I have ever had the pleasure of playing.

The alien world of Shadoon plays host to players of CrossWorlds, a futuristic melding of an MMORPG, LARPING (live-action role-playing), and Disney World. Players who log-in, take control of a body, known as an Avatar. You play as Lea, an amnesiac, and mute Avatar seeking her past while working to discover the secrets of the Ancients of Shadoon. Lea won’t need to uncover the mysteries, though, as she will be able to party up with a cast of endearing and bombastic characters to aid her, both inside and outside the game.

I loved the one-sided small talk between Lea and your first party member, Emilie-Sophie de Belmond, a Pentafist (think a Monk/punchy class) who goes by the character name Emilienator. Even though Lea has a limited vocabulary in which to respond, Emilie has no issue going on about whatever is on her mind, from beating you in races through dungeons or how she got chewed out at work for being late to a meeting. Who looks in their spam folder in their email, seriously? I also found the justice-seeking Apollo, a fellow Spheromancer that strives to keep players honest and punish any that may be cheating in CrossWorlds, to be hilarious. He’s your stereotypical exaggerated hero of justice, but Radical Fish Games’ writing prowess takes him so much more fun than his similar archetype peers. He will challenge Lea multiple times throughout the story, pushing Lea and making sure she stays on the up-and-up.

The supporting cast I enjoyed just as much as the main party. Sergey, who acts as your support from the real world, helps to repair your voice module, adding in new keywords for you to use and interact with your new friends. Whenever he would randomly pop-in, more often than not, I would find myself chuckling at his remarks and quips. Rather early on, you will find yourself a member of a small guild, the First Scholars, whose aim is to be the first to discover the final secrets of the Ancients. Run by the sweet and motherly Hlin, and her stoic second-in-command, Beowulf, I was surprised how much I came to love these characters the more I spoke with them and learned their stories.

CrossCode does a good job making the in-game world feel like a popular hustling-and-bustling MMO, even though it is a single-player experience. NPCs of various classes are often running around the different areas in the wild, while cities and other social hubs are packed with vendors and other faux players to further sell the vibe. You can also join a guild, tackle tough bosses, and make friends with exciting characters.

Much like a real MMO, there is plenty of side business that you get yourself into in-between your dives into the game’s various dungeons which further plot. Townsfolk and other NPC Avatars offer missions that range from your standard fair of fetch quests and monster-slaying tasks to logging the local fauna of Shadoon. Crafting in the traditional sense is absent in CrossCode and in its place you will be trading items at specialty vendor stalls. You can expect to spend time running through the wild cutting down plants and hunting down enemies, which is reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda series. Luckily the rewards for trading are worth it, as the gear you can get is far superior to the stock you can find in the shops proper.

CrossCode gameplay balances between fast-paced hack-n-slash combat with intricate puzzles. Encounters with even generic enemies in the wild can become tense clashes as mobs can consist of five or more at a time, each trying to kill you. In some of the more frantic matches, finding the narrow passages between the bullets and dodging my way to safety reminded me of a SHUMP.

Lea, as a Spheromancer, is far from being powerless and has plenty of options to fight back. As you progress throughout the game, you will unlock multiple skill trees that let you improve your stats and unlock new skills and abilities for your close-range, long-range, and defensive moves. A particularly cool aspect is that you have you can quickly swap between specific sub-trees and unique move options from the menu system, without the need to spend your points on both.

There is an added sense of intensity and urgency in combat with the inclusion of a ranking system. As you defeat enemies, a small bar will fill and once you fill it you will gain a rank. The higher your rank is ( which goes all the way to S-Rank), the more chances you’ll have to gain rare loot from enemies. This rarer loot is incredibly valuable as many quests and the gear you can trade for at the vendors, require them. As soon as a battle ends, a timer will begin counting down, and when it runs out, you lose your rank and have to start over. This means you will have to grind items and it’s a good idea to plan out a route around an area that will let you hit as many enemies as you can, as fast as you can. A trick I found particularly useful was to leave one enemy and start scouting out the next mob while your AI companions deal with the final enemy. This will give you some extra time to explore and track down more foes.

To throw another little wrench into the situation, increasing your rank and farming for items you will also be tempting fate. As long as you have a rank and are stringing encounters together to build it, you won’t have any access to the experience you are gathering and you won’t be auto-recovering between fights. Will you risk taking on that larger mob, netting a bunch of good drops, or should you call it quits and get that level-up that’s waiting for you? It’s a nice mechanic that just adds another layer to an already rich combat system.

When you aren’t fighting snowmen, hedgehogs, and bunnies, there is a good chance that you will be hopping around the landscape or racking your brain to figure out the solution to a puzzle. Before playing CrossCode, I wasn’t aware of how prevalent puzzles would be, but color me surprised when I realized that not only were puzzles a big part of the game, but they are very well-done. Most of the puzzles I found to be the perfect balance of challenge and inventiveness, thanks mostly to incorporating mechanics that involved bouncing balls off the walls and mirrors to hit targets. Running around the open-world has an aspect of puzzle-solving, too, as you will see various chests and items out of reach, and you will have to figure out how to reach them by jumping over pits and navigating walls and plateaus of varying heights. This incentivizes exploration in a fun way, and there’s a sense of satisfaction and surprise when you’ve found that hidden route or you discover a secret area that just appears when you get close to it.

For as good as the puzzles are and as tight as the gameplay is, what blew me away the most with CrossCode is how breathtaking the sprites and pixel art are. Players familiar with the RPGs from Square Enix’s golden age on the Super Nintendo will recognize the much of the inspiration here, stemming from titles like Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana. You will explore scorching deserts, wintery mountain peaks, dark, dreary mines, and advanced technological laboratories. Each location’s visuals are all done with such expert craftsmanship, that you could take a snapshot and hang it in your room, and it would look fantastic. Monster designs, especially the screen-filling bosses, are finely detailed and exude such personalities and charm. You’ll find yourself saying “awwww” the first time you see the cute bunnies before they then pounce to destroy you.

As you play, you will find more and more cute nods to other franchises that the developers clearly love. Items like the Phoenix Feather that come with descriptions that are a clear homage to the popular Final Fantasy curative item. Another that may seem familiar is the Salty Ice Cream that is, “Best enjoyed at sunset on top of a clocktower.” My personal favorites of these are the Metal Gears that are, “Just gears made out of metal, yepp,” and the Masterball, which “Heroes once used this device to capture legendary fiends.” I’m not going to lie, skimming the item descriptions turned into one of my favorite pastimes in this game, so be sure to check them out as you go, too.

The love that Radical Fish Games has put into CrossCode has resulted in a game that will be talked about as critically and with as much praise as other masterpieces like Shovel Knight or The Messenger. CrossCode’s mix of exciting exploration, chaotic yet tight combat, vast skill trees, and clever puzzles that all wrapped up in some of the most beautiful pixel art in the past decade is an experience any fan of RPGs should partake in. Some of the dungeons do go on a bit long, and I found it to be a little annoying at times (the first dungeon having ice physics was a bold choice). I also wasn’t the biggest fan of the exchange system with the item vendors and found myself wishing for a more traditional crafting system, but these small gripes did little to tarnish my overall experience. Every new area I found myself in or new items that contained a nod to pop culture or games from the past put a smile on my face.

In short, Radical Fish Games has raised the bar for retro-inspired indie games. You owe it to yourself to uncover the secrets Shadoon and CrossWorlds with Lea and friends in CrossCode.

Changing environment.

In the beginning, there were the Mechs and the weapons.

The Smilidon was the most dangerous predator on the fields of battle, and the Galaxy Eye was the most coveted weapon in existence.

Commanders flocked to the shops to buy Mechs and armaments. First the light Mechs and the startup weapons, but as their Piloting licences increased bigger Mechs and more powerful weapons were added to the shopping lists.

As a rule of thumb, the bigger and more upgraded Mechs tended to trash their smaller and/or less developed opponents.

In addition, the Mechs gained abilities as they were upgraded. Some increased the odds of hitting opponents, other tresholds made them more nimble, or added to the damage they dealt by the warious weapon types.

Some Mechs even got a chance of inflicting double damage on opponents, or had damage reduction capabilities shielding them from some of the damage delivered.

After some regularily spaced upgrades there was suddenly room to add in another weapon, and always, when the upgrading were done, the armor on the Mechs were thicker.

The base odds of hitting an opponent were 70% plus the Precision of the Mech and weapons, minus the opposing Mechs Dodge.

However, a shot would never be a guaranteed hit or miss. there were always about 1 chance in 20 of a miss even by the best Mech, and conversely a 1 in 20 chance of a hit hovever bad the firing Mech was.

And the manufactorers of the Mechs and the weapons smiled and had big profits.

….

Then the manufactorers added room for various Equipment pods on the Mechs. These were made avialiable after certain number of upgrades

The bigger Mechs had in general room for more pods than smaller, and which pods they had room for also varied.

Essentially, the pods were for increasing:

Precision (Cockpits), Dodge (Chasis), Speed (Engines) and Protection (Shields)

Some pilots muttered about the changes, but most bought and installed various pods to stay competitive.

To the base odds of hitting an opponent (70%) plus the Precision of the Mech and weapons were now added the accuracy bonus of the equipment, minus the opposing Mechs Natural Dodge and the agility bonus from the Equipment it had installed.

But still, the odds of hitting or missing was not a sure thing. However good you were, about 5% of the shots would miss their target, and even the most wretched wreck still had a 5% chance of scoring a hit.

And the manufactorers smiled and had big profits.

….

Then the Manufactorers managed to build bigger Mechs.

Suddenly the Smilidons were transformed from hunters to huntees as a steady flow of stedily bigger Mechs came from the factories.

The alien Skriag, Nakshi and Gigus was battling the Frigis for dominance. Then the Dinomechs arrived, and the Regis seemed to reign supreme, albeit both the Antithesis and the Ignis challenged this position.

Then the Boreas arrived.

It became the top predator in short order, and even with the addition of 100 tonners like the Fext, Apototron and Notos to the mix it still managed to hold its own.

The weapon and equipment shops were not idle either, and equipment for these new Mechs slowly made their way to the hangars of those who had gotten those bigger Mechs.

Initially the equipment was not very effective but after some time the quality and abilities rose to a point where both Precisison and Dodge (at least for some Mechs) could be increased to a 3-digit figure.

At least that was the theory.

In practice however, the Mechs were unable to benefit from a Precision higher than 95 or a Dodge higher than 70.

Remember the odds of hitting? Given the heavier BFM Mechs potential for high accuracy, now they could virtually guarantee a hit against any opponent no matter whether said opponent had a Dodge of 0, 70 (max) or 160.

One can excuse those who think this led to most Commanders disregarding Dodge as an option. After all, if you get hit anyway, why not use those Chasis modules for something worthwhile, like increasing Speed or damage

I am not saying it did not happen. But not all Mechs had top Precision, so having top Dodge would still reduce the hit odds of opponents using lesser Mechs, or from those who had not gained top Precision yet.

And in the lower tonnage classes, Dodge was still important as maximum attainable Dodge for many models actually were higher than maximum attainable Precision.

Of course, the heaviest Mechs now had an even easier time trashing their lesser brethren, When 19 of 20 shots you send downrange hit their thin armor, and only 4-5 of 20 return shots manage to find the way to the thick armor you wear, it could not be otherwise.

And the manufacturers smiled.

….

The existence of other realities were brought to the attantion of this Galaxy by the invasions of the Unification forces, and later their nemesis Xeon.

Some modification to existing weaponery and equipment took place as the defeated Mechs were carefully dismantled and revers engineered, and some Mech models was also eventually produced.

But the real change came when the craftsmen managed to open links to other realities in the Multiverses.

Pilots poured into those realities (at least in mind, if not in body) and learned much about the different way Things were done there.

In addition, those universes managed to break the 100 ton maximum tonnage limit that had stymied designers in the home Galaxy for decades.

It took years for homegrown UHM`s to make an apperance, and decent equipment for them longer still, but the top ranked pilots now routinely handle both 105 and 110 tonners.

The purchase cost of Mechs have actually gone down lately, but the cost of upgrading them is still the same. And while these UHM`s have great potential, it takes lots of time to reach said potential.

Meanwhile, the 95-100 tonners are the champions, and any UHM that shows up without beaing nearly fully developed tend to be ripped apart by them.

And the manufactorers smile

The latest change happened about half a decade ago. The liimits on top attainable Precision and Dodge bot made a leap upward. Hard numbers have not been published yet, but according to reliable sources the jump is in the 10-20 range (and the same) for both.

How does that change the Battlefield one might ask.

The answer is surprisingly; Not much. And quite a bit.

Looking at the light Mechs (10-25 tons), the only Mech that can take advantage of this change is the super rare Novum.

It can now use even more of its Dodge potential (up to 82 before HG) and goes from hard to hit toward being a hail mary shot for most light Mechs.

For the medium Mechs (30-50 tons) no change take place as none of them could reach even those previous limits.

Some of the heavy Mechs (55-75 tons) can rach the (new) allowed Dodge, but Precision wise they still fall short of the mark. This might make fights in these tonnage classes last longer since as many as 5 shots in 20 might actually miss (depending on model).

The huge Mechs (80-85 tons), or at least some of them can also get a higher Dodge, but neither of them can get top Precision either.

Which is the not much part of the answer.

It is still, and have perhaps become a bit worse actually, a loosing proposition to attack a heavier model, at least if it is fully upgraded and decently equipped.

While its odds of hitting you might have gone down a bit, your odds of hitting it is probably lowered even more.

It is when you get into the BFM (90 ton+) part of the equation that the real changes become apparent.

While the top hit probability haven’t gone up from 95%, some Mechs are simply incapable of getting to top Dodge and/or Precision, -while others can get there.

Commanders should take careful notice of which Mech models will be capable of hitting almost every time, and which models will have a much lower hit rate.

The Spectre for instance will have trouble getting a hit rate much above 85% against an opponent having top Dodge.

Some manufactures smile broader, on other faces the smiles are fading.

Evaluation

Portfolio Book

I created a book to show my portfolio work on Bonusprint which turned out to be a whole lot better than I expected. For my university interviews I presented my work in a leather book with sleeves that I had bought on Amazon. But creating a book seemed to be the more appropriate and more appealing way to show my work. For me it was either a book or a box of prints, I thought I could create a visually appealing sequence and layout in a book which is why I chose to create a book.

On Bonusprint I was able to select my cover material (linen), size of the book, I chose square format (21 x 21 cm) as this suited both my landscape and portrait format images, my name on the front cover, range of colours, I chose blue, paper type, I chose glossy because most of my images are in colour which would increase the colour detail and the layout for each page was quick and easy to use. Everything came together perfectly and I am very happy with my book, it looks and feels professional and I am excited to show it at our exhibition.

My book features old and new work, both produced in my own time and from projects on this course. My book features landscape, both rural and urban, architecture, both interior and exterior and some abstract work. I felt that including all of these genres was a good mix, they show my best work and it’s the work that I am most interested in and I am in my element when I’m producing them.

The images in my book all show the way I like to work, in terms of my style and creativity. My book isn’t split up into sections like landscape at the beginning, I wanted my book to be a mix of everything throughout my book. Even though my images aren’t split up into sections, they are linked in some way. These include; colour, same type of light, atmospheric feel, same type of position of a certain element and uniqueness. Some even lead onto the next page. I wanted my book to have a free flowing feel about it. One of my big decisions was to begin my book with a sunrise shot and end the book with a sunset, to create a visual journey for the viewer to experience.

In terms of layout, I have chosen to have some of my best landscape images spread over two pages, this is to make them stand out, to make them eye catching and do the images justice. Some images on opposite pages link, for example, at the beginning of my book there are two misty landscapes together, they are both the same size so the mist on both pages connects, acts as a leading line for the viewer to follow. There is also a set of four portrait format architecture images spread across two pages. I have put these together because of their position, the angle they were shot. The two images on the left page follow left and the images on the right page follow right, it made sense to present these images in this way.

Although I am extremely happy with my book, I wish I had included more of my work. My book contains 20 images which is the exact same amount I chose to show at my university interviews. Showing more of my work would have improved my book in my opinion.

Presentation

Looking back on my presentation, I feel that I showed and explained everything I wanted to say apart from one or two things that I had written down on my notepad. I showed my influences, both before and during this course. Both Connie Zhou and Charlie Waite are my favourite photographers who have helped me in becoming creative in the way I approach an image and helped me develop my my own style of working. This then links with how my work has massively improved from before I started this course and during this course. I have improved technically, positional wise, timing and my use of natural light. Also what format would suit a certain scene whether an architectural shot would suit a portrait format instead of landscape format. I have learned this during my time on this course.

I have become more confident, talking about my work and work of other photographers. This course has also taken me out of my comfort zone, in terms of participating in live briefs and especially our intrusion task. The intrusion task was the most difficult and uncomfortable task I had to do on this course. It tested my limits but showed I can overcome and succeed in tasks like this. I have also learned valuable skills in a range of genres.

This course has taught me so many key things which I couldn’t before this course. I have learnt to use and process film, gained studio experience, produced and edited a video in adobe premiere pro which could be very useful in the future. As I have previously mentioned, participating in live briefs and producing a set of images for a print publication for Bristol 24/7. The Bristol 24/7 task taught me how strict print publications are, in terms of sticking exactly to the brief that is set. Also to produce quality images that are good enough for print within a deadline. This was a very valuable experience that has prepared me if I get an opportunity like this again.

I still need to improve my editing skills, especially if I am working for a client, communication, in terms of contacting print publications to find work. I also feel that I need to produce more consistent quality of work. This has happened a couple of times during this course where I have submitted my final work but looking back I feel that I have made the wrong decisions. In terms of 1 or 2 images not being as strong and as the same standard as the rest. My decision making needs to improve.

I want to try and explore and produce documentary projects. Try and continue my research paper project which was about how land is treated. I want to experiment more with double exposure as I am very new to this but I enjoy the outcomes. As an avid landscape photographer I rarely shoot portrait format, this is something that I would like to explore doing when taking landscape shots, to focus on 1 or 2 elements in a scene.

Plan after this course

I am going to study a BA (Hons) Photography degree for another 2 years at Westminster University after this course. This is so I can explore and experiment in more modules and gain even more photographic skills and more experience in the subject. I was originally planning to study at year 3 but I think studying at year 2 will better prepare me going into the third year, especially helping with writing essays.

When I finish my BA (Hons) Photography degree my aim is to work as a freelance photographer (landscape and architecture) or work for a print publication. Even before this course I have wanted to work for a magazine. I have tried many times emailing certain companies but with little success. With a foundation degree and a BA (Hons) degree these can hopefully boost my chances but there’s no guarantee.

While pursuing these options at the end of year 3, at the same time I will be looking for a stable job away from photography, for example retail. This is a backup so I can still make a living if my photography ambitions don’t materialise. If this is the case, I will not give up on my dream of making a living as a photographer. If I don’t have success in making a living from photography I will still do it as hobby as it is my passion.

Talent Management and the Effect of the Peter Principle

Every organization of a given type must perform certain functions in order to be profitable. Employers must have the right workforce in order to supply its customers and do its work. For example, key functions of many retail and manufacturing business that provide products and services to customers include production, purchasing, marketing, accounting, sales and customer service personnel. Using such functions as the basis for structuring the organization may, in some instances, have the advantage of efficiency. However, these advantages come with hidden drawbacks, some constraints, and risk.

The Peter Principle is an observation that the tendency in most organizational hierarchies, such as that of a corporation, is for every employee to rise in the hierarchy through promotion and remain employed until they reach a level of respective incompetence. The Peter Principle was laid out by Canadian educational scholar and sociologist, Dr. Laurence J. Peter, in his 1968 book titled "The Peter Principle." Dr. Peter also stated in his book that an employee's inability to fulfill the requirements of a given position that he is promoted to may not be the result of general incompetence on the part of the employee as much as it is due to the fact that the position simply requires different skills than those the employee actually possesses. For example, an employee who is very good at following rules or company policies may be promoted into the position of creating rules or policies, despite the fact that being a good rule follower does not mean that an individual is well-suited to be a good rule creator or enforcer of rules.

This is why talent management plays an important role in the business strategy since it manages one of the important assets of the company—its people. Companies should make the effort to effectively manage the employees to help them develop their skills and capabilities in order to retain them. Talent management is an organization's commitment to recruit, hire, retain, and develop the most talented and superior employees available in the job market. So, talent management is a useful term when it describes an organization's commitment to hire, manage, develop, and retain talented employees.

The field of Talent Management increased in popularity after “McKinsey and Company's 1997 research and the book “The War for Talent” hit the shelves in 2001 and in a period in the U.S. when the article was published by Economic Policy Institute, “The State of Working America 1998-99”, on September 11, 2002, based on “EPI’s flagship book “The State of Working America 1998-99 was released by Cornell University Press on January 1, 1999.”, I found out how this would impact the trajectory of my career for the first time and why I decided to pick the human resource field.

"The average unemployment rate during the current business cycle has been lower than during any such cycle since 1967-73, with joblessness falling to about 4.5 percent in mid-1998. Research shows that employing incompetent individuals at the management level is more alienating than being treated poorly and why most companies lose the most talented people. The impact of absentee leadership on job satisfaction outlasts the impact of both constructive and overtly destructive forms of leadership. Constructive leadership immediately improves job satisfaction, but the effects dwindle quickly. Destructive leadership immediately degrades job satisfaction, but the effects dissipate after about six months. In contrast, the impact of absentee leadership takes longer to appear, but it degrades subordinates’ job satisfaction for at least two years. It also is related to a number of other negative outcomes for employees, like role ambiguity, health complaints, and increased bullying from team members. Absentee leadership creates employee stress, which can lead to poor employee health outcomes and talent drain, which then impact an organization’s bottom line.

Dr. Peter summed up the Peter Principle with a twist on the old adage that "the cream rises to the top" by stating that "the cream rises until it sours." In other words, excellent employee performance is inevitably promoted to the point where the employee's performance is no longer excellent, or even satisfactory. According to the Peter Principle, competence is rewarded with the promotion because competence, in the form of employee output, is noticeable and therefore usually recognized. However, once an employee reaches a position in which they are incompetent, they are no longer evaluated based on their output but instead are evaluated on input factors, such as arriving at work on time and having a good attitude. Dr. Peter further argued that employees tend to remain in positions for which they are incompetent because mere incompetence is rarely sufficient to cause the employee to be fired from the position. Ordinarily, only extreme incompetence causes dismissal. I have found this happens mostly in the C-Suite. Those with the most to lose are usually the last ones to leave

Like the provost in this example, the Harvard Law Review published “that many organizations don’t confront absentee leaders because they have other managers whose behavior is more overtly destructive. Because absentee leaders don’t actively make trouble, their negative impact on organizations can be difficult to detect, and when it is detected, it often is considered a low-priority problem. Thus, absentee leaders are often silent organization killers. Left unchecked, absentee leaders clog an organization’s succession arteries, blocking potentially more effective people from moving into important roles while adding little to productivity. Absentee leaders rarely engage in unforgivable bouts of bad behavior, and are rarely the subject of ethics investigations resulting from employee hotline calls. As a result, their negative effect on organizations accumulates over time, largely unchecked.

If your organization is one of the relatively few with effective selection and promotion methods in place, then it may be able to identify effective and destructive leaders. Even if your organization isn’t great at talent identification, both types of leaders are easy to spot once they are on the job. They also produce predictable organizational outcomes: Constructive leadership creates high engagement and productivity, while destructive leadership kills engagement and productivity. The chances are good, however, that your organization is unaware of its absentee leaders, because they specialize in flying under the radar by not doing anything that attracts attention. Nonetheless, the adhesiveness of their negative impact may be slowly harming the company.”

In 2018, economists Alan Benson, Danielle Li, and Kelly Shue analyzed sales workers' performance and promotion practices at 214 American businesses to test the Peter Principle. They found that companies did indeed tend to promote employees to management positions based on their performance in their previous position, rather than based on managerial potential. Consistent with the Peter Principle, the researchers found that high performing sales employees were likelier to be promoted and that they were likelier to perform poorly as managers, leading to considerable costs to the businesses.

Overcoming the Peter Principle was the path I took to get promotions in my career. I made sure that I was adequately trained, managed people at different levels, and received education in my field in the form of a degree and certifications, so that I was always more than qualified for the position that I was applying. Some may disagree with my method but will be impressed at the outcome.

A possible solution to the problem posed by the Peter Principle is for companies to provide adequate skill training for employees receiving a promotion, and to ensure the training is appropriate for the position to which they have been promoted. However, Dr. Peter pessimistically predicted that even good employee training is ultimately unable to overcome the general tendency of organizations to promote employees to positions of incompetence, which he refers to as positions of "final placement." Promoting people at random has been another proposal, but one which does not always create opportunity for success for the company, it increase risk and liabilities, and never sit well with employees.
