one of the things that i think we should pay attention to, socially, about the disney v. desantis thing is that it is really highlighting the importance of remembering nuance.
in a purely neutral sense, if you engage in something problematic, that does not mean you are necessarily agreeing with what makes it problematic. and i am worried that we have become... so afraid of any form of nuance.
disney isn't my friend, they're a corporate monopoly that bastardized copyright laws for their own benefit, ruin the environment, and abuse their workers (... and many other things). this isn't a hypothetical for me - i grew up in florida. i also worked for the actual Walt Disney World; like, in the parks. i am keenly aware of the ways they hurt people, because they hurt me. i fully believe that part of the reason florida is so conservative is because it's been an "open secret" for years now that disney lobbies the government to keep minimum wage down, and i know they worked hard to keep the parks unmasked and open during the worst parts of Covid. they purposefully keep their employees in poverty. they are in part responsible for the way the floridian government works.
desantis is still, by a margin that is frankly daunting, way worse. the alternative here isn't just "republicans win", it's actual fascism.
in a case like this, where the alternative is to allow actual fascism into united states legislation - where, if desantis wins, there are huge and legal ramifications - it's tempting to minimize the harm disney is also doing, because... well, it's not fascism. but disney isn't the good guy, either, which means republicans are having a field day asking activists oh, so you think their treatment of their employees is okay?
we have been trained there is a right answer. you're right! you're in the good group, and you're winning at having an opinion.
except i have the Internet Prophecy that in 2-3 months, even left-wing people will be ripping apart activists for having "taken disney's side". aren't i an anti-capitalist? aren't i pro-union? aren't i one of the good ones? removed from context and nuance (that in this particular situation i am forced to side with disney, until an other option reveals itself), my act of being like "i hope they have goofy rip his throat out onstage, shaking his lifeless body like a dog toy" - how quickly does that seem like i actually do support disney?
and what about you! at home, reading this. are you experiencing the Thought Crime of... actually liking some of the things disney has made? your memories of days at the parks, or of good movies, or of your favorite show growing up. maybe you are also evil, if you ever enjoyed anything, ever, at all.
to some degree, the binary idealization/vilification of individual motive and meaning already exists in the desantis case. i have seen people saying not to go to the disney pride events because they're cash grabs (they are). i've seen people saying you have to go because they're a way to protest. there isn't a lot of internet understanding of nuance. instead it's just "good show of support" or "evil bootlicking."
this binary understanding is how you can become radicalized. when we fear nuance and disorder, we're allowing ourselves the safety of assuming that the world must exist in binary - good or bad, problematic or "not" problematic. and unfortunately, bigots want you to see the world in this binary ideal. they want you to get mad at me because "disney is taking a risk for our community but you won't sing their praises" and they want me to get mad at you for not respecting the legit personal trauma that disney forced me through.
in a grander scheme outside of disney: what happens is a horrific splintering within activist groups. we bicker with each other about minimal-harm minimal-impact ideologies, like which depiction of bisexuality is the most-true. we gratuitously analyze the personal lives of activists for any sign they might be "problematic". we get spooked because someone was in a dog collar at pride. we wring our hands about setting an empty shopping mall on fire. we tell each other what words we may identify ourselves by. we get fuckin steven universe disk horse when in reality it is a waste of our collective time.
the bigots want you to spend all your time focusing on how pristine and pretty you and your interests are. they want us at each other's throats instead of hand in hand. they want to say see? nothing is ever fucking good enough for these people.
and they want their followers to think in binary as well - a binary that's much easier to follow. see, in our spaces, we attack each other over "proper" behavior. but in bigoted groups? they attack outwards. they have someone they hate, and it is us. they hate you, specifically, and you are why they have problems - not the other people in their group. and that's a part of how they fucking keep winning.
some of the things that are beloved to you have a backbone in something terrible. the music industry is a wasteland. the publishing industry is a bastion of white supremacy. video games run off of unpaid labor and abuse.
the point of activism was always to bring to light that abuse and try to stop it from happening, not to condemn those who engage in the content that comes from those industries. "there is no ethical consumption under late capitalism" also applies to media. your childhood (and maybe current!) love of the little mermaid isn't something you should now flinch from, worried you'll be a "disney adult". wanting the music industry to change for the better does not require that you reject all popular music until that change occurs. you can acknowledge the harm something might cause - and celebrate the love that it has brought into your life.
we must detach an acknowledgment of nuance from a sense of shame and disgust. we must. punishing individual people for their harmless passions is not doing good work. encouraging more thoughtful, empathetic consumption does not mean people should feel ashamed of their basic human capacities and desires. it should never have even been about the individual when the corporation is so obviously the actual evil. this sense that we must live in shame and dread of our personal nuances - it just makes people bitter and hopeless. do you have any idea how scared i am to post this? to just acknowledge the idea of nuance? that i might like something nuanced, and engage in it joyfully? and, at the same time, that i'm brutally aware of the harm that they're doing?
"so what do i do?" ... well, often there isn't a right answer. i mean in this case, i hope mickey chops off ron's head and then does a little giggle. but truth be told, often our opinions on nuanced subjects will differ. you might be able to engage in things that i can't because the nuance doesn't sit right with me. i might think taylor swift is a great performer and a lot of fun, and you might be like "raquel, the jet fuel emissions". we are both correct; neither of us have any actual sway in this. and i think it's important to remember that - the actual scope of individual responsibility. like, i also love going to the parks. Thunder Mountain is so fun. you (just a person) are not responsible for the harm that Disney (the billion dollar corporation) caused me. i don't know. i think it's possible to both enjoy your memories and interrogate the current state of their employment policies.
there is no right way to interrogate or engage with nuance - i just hope you embrace it readily.

I use to be so supportive of vegan leather until I was told it was just plastic and real leather from animals is actually much more sustainable and durable.
Only mildly related but im kind of feeling vegans lately... like we dont really need to kill animals to eat you can eat plants and eggs and the meat industry doesnt need to exist at all... just saying we dont NEED slaughterhouses. Kind of feel like if an animal dies for food you should be killing it yourself...

Popular Books I Read and HATED
*Disclaimer: If you like any of these books, slay! I'm happy for you! These are just my own consumer choices, and imo negative book reviews are just as helpful as positive ones!*
This list is not long because I don't actively dislike many books that I read, and I have a very good sense of what I will and will not like, but there are some I had to read/were misled into reading so here we go:
1. Tender Is The Flesh
by Agustina Bazterrica
Tumblr media
My rant review is above if you want more details but recently I've seen a few videos that articulate my feelings in a way that I couldn't before so im going to add a few reasons here that were not included in the original post:
It gave very Qanon and general antisemitic vibes: i.e blatant conspiracy made up by the "wealthy liberal elites" to encourage cannibalism for their own enjoyment (I know she's Argentinian however that doesn't mean im not allowed to get the ick from it)
Purposefully inaccurate depictions of meat industry and disrespect for farmers (context: im a vegetarian from farm country with a roommate who works in the cattle industry - Angus beef if you're curious - so im very familiar with the process and cannot say in good conscious that it is all bad -> just support local farmers <3)
world building makes little sense
COWS DO NOT EQUATE TO HUMANS NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO !!!!!!!!
the "disease" doesn't make sense (even if its made up who would believe it)
No themes were treated with the depth nor nuance they require (capitalism, feminism, veganism etc.)
I think thats all I haven't covered but this is the only book I have ever read where my hatred of it continues to grow with each day. I went out of my way and deleted it from my reader and get annoyed every time I see it. And for the record (because yes i'm salty) I didn't hate it because it was too disturbing, in fact I've read and loved worse and ive been an avid horror reader since I was (admittedly too) young. I hate it because there wasn't a well done story underneath the gore. I'll say it loudly for the people in the back GORY HORROR BOOKS STILL DESERVE A GOOD/INTERESTING STORY, especially if you want to try to put complex themes in it. If you cannot write a deep story but you're good at and enjoy gore, write yourself a lil 100 page splatter punk and we can all have a good time <3
Unlike with Tender Is The Flesh I don't have a ton of thought out critical reasons for the rest of these soooooo I'm going to give my highly subjective reasons -> I totally understand why some like them <3
2. The Handmaids Tale
by Margaret Atwood
Tumblr media
hated the writing style
It didn't keep my attention
disliked the ending so much I actually threw it across the room <3
3. The Hobbit
by J.R.R Tolkien
Tumblr media
hated the writing style
male centered fantasy is not my vibe
my ADHD cannot handle long incredibly descriptive sections in books -> I physically fell asleep multiple times while reading this book
honestly even with the movie I fall asleep every time
0/10 book I want to read
10/10 bedtime story
4. Lord of The Flies
by William Golding
Tumblr media
hated the writing style
hated most of the characters (and not in a slay anti-hero way)
was forced to read it in high school and it single handedly sent me into a 4 year reading slump... I missed so many good books because of this and will forever hold a grudge
5. Romeo & Juliet
By William Shakespeare
Tumblr media
I'm too jaded and gay to enjoy this -> every single character is so painfully stupid
tbh im just bitter that his (imo) better plays get less love than this one, its way over hyped
but I will give it points for boring me so much that I wrote my first fanfic (Romeo x Mercutio if you're curious ... no its not posted anywhere and it never will be <3)
sidenote -> Shakespeare plays I love incl:
Hamlet (duh im a depressed emo gay on Tumblr)
Macbeth (also duh, witches and female manipulator... need I say more)
Othello (a slow burn for the true crime girlies)
Measure for Measure (absolutely underrated, please please please look into this play -> I saw a production of it and it was incredible)

i honestly can't fathom living with the mindsets that some more radical vegans have. to be so disconnected from food that animal products are evil and you should feel bad for using them, to shun mutualistic relationships humans have had since humans started being humans. to try and distance ourselves from nature. it seems so stressful! obviously it's one thing to spout propaganda and continously police how other people live, but it absolutely cannot be healthy to constantly talk about it, think about it, make it your identity. food is food, and material is material. be kinder to yourselves. assume kinder of other people.
it's a noble cause to feel the need to reduce your own impact in the damage to the world, absolutely. there is 0 denying that food industries as a whole are rotten to the core and need severe reform, granted these are a consequence of capitalism, not the products themselves. i understand it usually comes from a place of great anxiety and upset. we're built to feel compassion for not only eachother but things around us. but i still can't imagine the hurt that comes from so deeply believing the mere act of using wool, honey, fur, meat is an affront to nature and inherently fowl, these things that humans would have died out thousands of years ago if our ancestors didn't risk their lives to tame aurochs or rams. things die for other things to live.
you can do whatever you want with your own body forever. however it isnt more inherently cruel to eat beef than it is to eat quorn. both products run a good chance of being harvested, packaged, and imported from far away by people being paid slave wages.
shop local, look into vegetables and fruits grown in your country/state by season and buy by season, grow your own veg and herbs, consider owning your own rabbits or chickens if you have ample space, time, and the physical means. look into local meat, wear wool, wear fur, look into the local hunting scene and consider working with more game. learn how to dress a duck, make art and tools from the bones and feathers you didnt cook. obviously sourcing is still an issue for some things - hence the emphasis on buying local. avoid imported fur, look into coyote that was trapped in your state as an example, or hides from rabbits that were raised for meat, or buy eggs from the small farm down the road.
most importantly make peace with what you eat, what you can get. i live in a country where pheasant is a popular game meat but the industry around pheasant hunting here is a fucking travesty. but it is one of my favourite foods, and as a poor consumer i can't change it, so i try and support good businesses or harvest my own when possible. i can't afford to and dont care for most meats otherwise, and mostly eat fish, even knowing fishing industry is wholly unsustainable. i still need to eat, and to enjoy what i eat. it isnt your fault Cornish X chicken is the most widespread and affordable, and you shouldnt feel bad for settling for it. be aware, be vocal, but dont be guilty.
never feel bad for what you eat, or use. your ancestors worked hard for that. love yourself, love whats around you, and learn how to use every single part of a deer, or learn the joys of growing your own tomatoes. i cannot stress how much more i appreciate what i cook after butchering birds myself, from cull to roast, and im sure most of us are familiar with the simple joys of eating wild berries. im sorry capitalism and colonialism ruined something so innately human for so many people.

took this outta my pinned, so im putting it here, but it's not exactly news:
i'm also no longer able to maintain a pescatarian diet due to health concerns(😔), but i am still making a concerted effort to eat less meat, more sustainable, ethical choices of meat alternatives, and to only purchase food products, animal or otherwise, that do not directly support industrial farming*, fishing, etc. (*with non meats/eggs/dairy/honey, this would mean monocrops, clearcutting, landstripping, water waste, etc. with animal products, it involves clearcutting & water waste, as well as potentially abysmal animal husbandry. we are still living on foodstamps though, so we're limited. 🙃
related: low FODMAP diet haaaaaaard 😭

I've been vegan for just over a year now and don't regret any second of it. In early 2021, my partner went vegetarian after watching some pig and fish documentaries, but I was one of those people who said I could never. Fast forward a few months, and the idea of eating meat is sickening to me. My partner then told me the dairy industry is pretty much worse than just meat and cut it out of his diet, and again I was like "but cheese." Around November 2021, I was preparing an entirely vegan thanksgiving meal. We now have several friends who have or are working on cutting out all animal products, but I understand how long of a process it can be. I am so grateful for my partner, because I don't think I would have even thought to try a plant based diet despite thinking I was such an animal lover. I feel so much better without all the guilt (it has really been helping my mental health) and love educating others about it :) we've been told by many non-vegans that we make some pretty killer vegan queso and baked goods too ;) I am also very lucky to live where I can easily find vegan options at most restaurants near me. I even quit my corporate job to work at a health food store with a lot of yummy vegan junk food :P
OH AMAZING !! you are a legend for real 💗 stories like this make me the happiest. when someone against the cause starts to realize that theres no justification for supporting animal exploitation when you can avoid it and they decide to go vegan despite loving the products of that exploitation... that really takes strength and gives me hope <3 im glad your mental health is better now, going vegan healed my soul a lot as well. i would love to have some of the food you make~

BRIEF TWO- DISRUPT
Project research- what inspires my vegan morals and aspiring vegan diet?
In 2018 I gave up meat cold turkey after a nightmare I had in which I was a cow about to be slaughtered. The dream felt like a spiritual messege to me, to give up meat and stop supporting the murder of animals.
For 5 years that felt like enough, it felt like I was doing the right thing and that I was activley protesting the meat industry. Until this year, 2023, when I found vegan activist Ed Winters on social media. He enlightened me on my hypocrosy, and how im actually not doing as much as I think I am. This is his opinion on vegetarianism from his instagram;
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This project has been a great opportunity for me to share my views on the meat and dairy industry, and spread awareness. I don't expect many people to listen to the message of my project as unfortunately people get very defensive and annoyed when veganism is brought up rather than actually listen and reconsider their values. However as an artist I hope to inspire people in my lifetime as Ed Winters has inspired me.
I'm glad that I have been able to use this project as a chance to do that, even though I know people are not going to listen. All we can do is keep trying in the hopes that one day we'll live in a world where innocent creatures are not subjected to mass murder everyday, just because humans are too greedy to realize that it dosent have to be that way.

Im drunk and vegan so here’s my thoughts:
Eat honey, if the bees don’t like it they would just leave
Chickens have been selectively bred to produce that many eggs so we might as well eat them
Stop calling eggs periods and milk pus, that’s weird
Second hand leather is better than brand new plastic leather
Anything second hand that’s animal based isn’t bad, you’re not supporting an industry and you’re not supporting the production of more items
Wear wool, sheep have been selectively bread to the point that it would be immoral to not shave their wool and we might as well use it
People have been eating meat for millennia before you existed, it’s not immoral, you’ve just chosen not to do it
Some people don’t have vegan options that will work for them
Some people live in places that don’t have access to basic groceries, let alone fresh produce and vegan alternatives
If your approach to veganism isn’t understanding of other people’s situations that mean that they can’t be, you’re dumb
Some people could go vegan, but they won’t if you’re a cunt about it
I have spent years of my life working with meat, stop being precious about it, it’s fine
Don’t eat meat if you’ve been vegan for a long time, you will spend three days shitting your guts out

me when people ignore me explicitly saying im a vegetarian and telling me (who doesnt eat meat) to cut out meat from my diet. babes im already there. i am living the life you want me to. i still see the flaws in it.
please i beg you gain some reading comprehension and actually absorb my points.
Veganism is a lifestyle and diet choice many use to support their moral beliefs and activism. but it is not on its own a moral belief or activism.
do not mistake your diet and personal life choices for activism.
Take a critical look at who you're lashing out at. Do they have any actual power over the problem youre railing against? Acknowledge where your choices fall short and where your problems chafe against other problems and work on addressing them where theyre at.
these are inter-sectional issues. just saying "dont eat meat if you care about animals" does not do anything. You have to address the root of the problem not the random people on the street. your big corpos and lawmakers are the real problem. its an industry thing not an individual thing.

I think the problem is maybe humans are supposed to eat meat but im not going to when the meat industry tortures and mass slaughters animals how they do. Humans ruined it for ourselves by making it sadistic and greedy. So its not as easy as saying "just eat it again" its that i literally morally cannot support a torture industry.

I’m sorry this is like so morbid but I just saw a meme about PETA and it got me thinking about this stuff so I’m just going on a philosophical ramble about nothing lol
It’s really honestly pretty shit how the entire cycle of reality is based on one thing dies so another can live? Like even if you go vegan that still doesn’t break the cycle cuz plants are very much alive too… we live in houses made of wood, we gotta eat something whether it’s plants or other animals… idk plants eat the decayed material of other dead things via soil etc it’s just like… wat the fuck? Everything is a circle…. A lot of animals will die without eating meat too like they literally can’t choose.
Im not trying to make a point about veganism or anything like that, im just saying that it’s rly too bad how this all works. I think it’s rly important to support ethical farming and industry etc whenever we’re able to, because it’s the best we can do to rebel against that from what I can tell🤷‍♀️like im not sure there really is any other way. Not to mention the impact that a lot of mass production (in general) has on other humans.
I guess it’s part of why I find the supernatural to be such a healing and comforting concept whether it’s real or not, because it’s got that idea of someday you can rise above the corporeal system of exchange, you can just be a self sustaining soul and work towards what matters to you with less unconquerable inevitable baggage that comes with being in a body 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️
