Bg3 hitting the "actually this game is bad" part of the hype cycle more than like half a year after it released is so fucking funny to me. Usually it only takes like a month or 2 for people to start overanalyzing the fuck out of a good game and convince themselves it's actually shit but the fact the game is so big and dynamic that it took this long is impressive

#not to say a decent amount of the criticism is unwarranted #the game has flaws and could definitely be improved #but saying larian doesnt care or did a bad job is fucking nuts to me #also bg3 is an indie game (granted a very high budget and high profile one) #thats what makes bg3 such an impressive achievement

btw gamedev accessibility check speedrun tactic is just have every element use at least two senses. i also think of it as the nirnroot test, specifically because of the plant in Skyrim that glows and makes a weird noise at you so you can locate it.

often, because these are games, that will be "sight" and "sound", but with things like controller rumble it can also include "touch". most games do not include "taste" and "smell", but to the devs out there inevitably working on that, you have my respect.

anyways. the multi-sense check is basically:

if something is only present as an audio cue, like a sound effect in a certain direction, add a visual effect / cue or captions that include a directional indicator. if all dialogue is spoken, try to include subtitles (even better if you have various font sizes, or light and dark mode toggles).

if something is only present as a visual cue, like an item you can interact with being a different color, add an audio effect like a sound that plays when you're touching an interactive object. if all dialogue is written, try and include text to speech options, voice actors (a big ask, I know) or compatibility with screen readers.

it doesn't cover every situation (toggles for flashing, snow / rain / particle effects, high pitched noises, etc for example only affect one sense) but if you're really lost on where to start with making your work accessible. well. it's a start!

2024 vs 2021

I always attempt to do this as fast as I can, as loose as I can, without references. As you can see, the first four attempts (from three years ago, haha) I gave up including Ro'onui entirely, because I couldn't manage the perspective/anatomy involved without a reference.

anyway none of these pieces are finished/polished, but it's wild to see that my "unfinished" work now can pass as complete!

Out of curiosity I checked out how many matches a month Takeshita had in DDT. In 2019 he wrestled 10 matches a month.

In the last five months in AEW he wrestled four matches a month and half of those weren't for AEW.

I can understand this rate if you're going on 40, and you already spent years working something like a DDT or WWE schedule (in WWE without injury it's 16, 17, 18 matches a month!), but in AEW, without houses shows, with you being lucky to have a match a week at all between three TV shows and ROH, AEW is a graveyard for young wrestlers.

Noah enjoys dressing up and celebrating Halloween since it's one of his favorite holiday's. It's also a day that gives him a chance to get creative and do something different! The only thing he wouldn't mess with or adjust is his hair except on very rare occasions and if so, it'll be small adjustments that he likes even if it doesn't match up to who he's dressing up as. :]

So I played I was a Teenage Exocolonist

At first, the game sort of rubbed me the wrong way. I enjoyed playing it and the amount of detail and events that can happen depending on your choices is great. But it also felt jarring to me that runs end at age 20, like that was when every decision you've made locked in. And I couldn't get past the idea that Sol is sort of doomed to continue the loop for eternity. Sure the Transcend Time ending exists but that also means that the loop never ends. Sol has to keep reliving their life.

But having had time to think about it, and all the different timelines, having spent time listneing to the insert song "The Child that you Were" and thinking about all the characters and how you can affect their lives, I've realised there's something incredibly bittersweet about it. The game rewards you for solving a problem by making it easier to solve in the next loop. Finding the Shimmer cure, saving Tammy, your Dr Hal, your mum, replacing Governor Lum, brokering peace, etc.

But they can't make it perfect. There will always be fighting, deaths (Kom), conflict before resolution. We're constantly alluded to the fact that the kids don't really have a childhood. They become farmers, soldiers, scientists and childcarers from age 10. They are fighting for their lives and they experience loss and death far too early for any of them to keep their childhood innocence.

But that's sort of the point.

A lot of people have nostalgia for the past when they were a teenager. But the reality is that no, you can't go back. Even if somehow time went backwards and you returned to your teen years, the fact is, you are no longer the person you were back then. "The child you were will not return," no matter how hard you want them to.

At first I parsed that lyric as a source of pain or torture for Sol, but I realised that it's really no different from how all the kids think. Nem loses her brother, Tammy takes time to adjust to the planet, Tang has to reconcile with her brother and deal with her whole "weakness of the flesh" mindset. None of them think they have that innocence or optimism anymore.

But Sol knows that's not true. Sol knows what they're all capable of, how much potential there is in them. They've seen it across countless lifetimes.

And damn if they won't use that knowledge to give them the best lives possible.

And when they're older and wiser, they can all look back fondly at their childhood and think "I was a Teenage Exocolonist".

I know I usually just talk about Exceptionals when I talk about games I made. I spent years of my life on it and it was well received. But I also made a wrestling-themed improve party game called friday night event and I love some of the prompts in it still.

isn't it wild how you can play through an entire indie game in a single day and be left with a deeper, more profound experience, story, moral or question all wrapped in a more unique and impactful art style than many triple a games nowadays. for like 8 bucks.

#indie games i love you forever #this isn't about anything in particular but #i think about gris every time the conversation centers big expensive time consuming games #i think this year was pretty solid tho! apart from stinkers like diablo 4 or starfield. but maybe the industry isn't lost #looking at bg3 or alan wake 2 getting a lot of recognition. both are still somewhat underdogs compared to the standard #but they're nominated for goty! and bg3 will probably take it. meanwhile the two opposites faded into the sidelines instantly #i need to play viewfinder cocoon and hi fi rush too (which is nominated for goty as well iirc you love to see it) #but i just love that indie approach and comparably still smaller studios are getting out there #and the indie category itself is holding its own between these and the big studio snoozefests and nintendo's circlejerk #there's still a lot to improve about game awards - a horror game category would be neat for example and generally more diversity in titles #what is forspoken why isn't anyone talking about it apart from like 5 tumblr users. also pentiment where??? #but idk. maybe it's just this one year but it looks hopeful for the future. who knows #shut up elis #the game awards 2023 #(i guess)
