Alright long post about Sol Bufo, death and the intense dread I feel about the future of Swag Daniels.
Throughout the campaign, Sol has built a very complicated connection to death. Obviously his connection to the fungal network is part of that but it's been building since the beginning. He has his first near death experience in the ep.4 “A Frog in the Fog”. The next time he gets this close to “death” is in episode 13: “Alexandrite”, when Alexandrite almost takes him over.
Episode 27: “King of Dragons” is where everything changes. All in one episode Sol forms a connection to Shroomrot, watches him die and then nearly dies alongside him in the mud. After this episode, Sol establishes a connection to the fungal network, his first encounter with the idea that death is not an end but a cycle. Shroomrot was a sad loss of course but the network becomes a comforting connection for Sol. Then episode 29 happens “Crown of Dreams” and it’s a mirror of Sol’s experience in ep.27 but much more grim. Sol in this moment comes the closest he’s ever been to death and all he can do it watch helplessly as his friend gives himself up to save his life. Calder giving his body to Ultrus was not a death but it was a profound loss and it likely held more guilt for Sol than any other experience in his entire life. It is this point that Sol decides he never wants to be that helpless again. His switch to Way of the Long Death Monk is fascinating because it’s an assertion of his resolve to always bounce back but also a further acceptance of the Fungal Network and the comforting association it has to death. And things start to look up for Sol, he meets Swag, he battles Utlrus and is nearly un-hitable, and they get Calder back. All’s well that ends well for Sol Bufo.
Except, Swag goes missing. The only connection he has to his origins gone to Alexandrite, who tried and failed to take him in ep.13. Sol didn’t go down, he didn’t do anything wrong, and yet Swag is gone. Life goes on, Sol refuses to go down and the next time he sees Swag is in a dream eerily familiar to the one he had in episode 27 as he was drowning in mud. Floating carefree in a warm swamp this time with Swag by his side. The things Swag says in this conversation are very concerning. He starts drifting away, he tells Sol that he is thankful for having met him. His language is so final. He's thankful for the time they *got* to spend together. He got to be a hero "in the end". And Sol tries to push back, reaffirming their future, telling Swag that they are still looking for him. "To keep everyone safe" he says. And Swag responds "You've been studying the bond of life and death so you have to know you can't keep everyone safe." He tries to say that Sol needs to let him go but cannot finish that sentiment until Ep. 57 "Cold Hard Truths".
Swag has accepted the end, but Sol refuses it. Just like how he refuses to go down. He keeps telling Swag that they will find him, help him but Swag already accepts his fate. Notice how in this episode Duck Team are revealed as Peregrines, people who affect destiny, forge their own way forward. Now remember that Sol is a clone, supposedly a copy of Swag and yet they do not share this title. Sol, despite his status as a clone, is his own person. He defied fate in his existence, the only complete clone of the original Sol Bufo, breaking away from Mothership, and now fighting actively against Alexandrite. I think it is Swag's fate to die but I also think it's in Sol's nature to reject that premise. In the last few episodes, Sol has been reminded that he has family besides Swag. Albin is his brother, Kenna is his little sister, Duck Team is his family. And in a way, this is all preparing Sol for a profound loss. So we'll have to wait and see. Will he be able to deny fate, to somehow save Swag? Or will he be fully confronted with loss and inevitably, that he did nothing wrong and yet Swag is still gone? Food for thought and also immense dread.

Ten of my favourite flora and fauna photos I took in February 2024 and moth summary
The photos are of; Black-tailed Godwit at Titchfield Haven, Peregrine Falcon at Winchester Cathedral, daffodil in Winchester, crocus and Red Admiral at Lakeside Country Park, gorse at Milkham in the New Forest, Shelduck and Bewick's Swan at WWT Slimbridge, Mute Swan at Tar Lakes and teasel seed heads in a flooded area at Dix Pit.
February was another fantastic month with many breathtaking birdwatching moments, from the wetland splendour of watching the Bewick's Swans, Common Cranes, Ruffs, Spotted Redshank, Golden Plovers, Lapwings, Pintails, Shelducks, Pochards, Wigeon, Shoveler, Teal and more on an amazing focal point of the month on our trip to Slimbridge to mesmerising views of a Hen Harrier. Mistle Thrush, Sanderling, rare Red-breasted Goose, brilliant Bittern and Dartford Warbler views, Lesser Redpoll, incredible Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Goshawk, Woodlark, Skylark, Corn Bunting, Yellowhammer and vibrant Mandarin Duck and Red-crested Pochard were other key species seen as my bird year continued to build wonderfully with me feeling amazing that my year list is really competing with where past ones of mine were on this date. A few more visits from the Black Redstart in the garden, seeing the Winchester Cathedral Peregrine nesting season develop and the nesting season on patch at Lakeside Country Park come on with Great Crested Grebes building a nest and Greylag and Canada Geese taking over the country park with Lesser Black-backed Gull mostly a spring bird there too more present there and near home were other exciting themes this month. Spoonbill, Great White Egret, Avocet, Curlew, Snipe, Goldeneye, Marsh Harrier, Red Kite, Siskin, Firecrest continuing my strong start to the year for them, Redwing towards the end of their season and the sound and sight often for some too of Song Thrush, Green Woodpecker and Cetti's Warbler were other highlights in February. I had a good mammal month with Muntjac Deer, a few magical encounters with Roe Deers and Brown Hare seen nicely.
A big theme of the month was the race towards spring with the usual expected sightings for February of epic swathes of snowdrops and daffodils being joined by a plethora of perky spring flowers including crocuses, lesser celandine, snowflakes, speedwell, marsh marigold, red deadnettle, white deadnettle, hyacinth, violets, mercury, some winter heliotrope still going, glorious bits of blossom and stunning scenes of gorse especially in the New Forest. With many sunny moments and high temperatures at times inevitably I had one of my best ever Februaries for seeing butterflies with a few more Red Admiral sightings including ones settled to allow I believe my earliest ever butterfly photos in a year including with my macro lens and a Peacock seen at least once too. I can't help but be upbeat about my early butterfly encounters in a year and as my flower interest is really blossoming now I feel the same about early spring flowers but what we've seen this winter is of course alarming in our changing world. Spiders and Grey Silverfish kept me entertained at home again this month and bees were a pleasure to see a few times too as were some newts and frogspawn.

Ani Re-read Book 3: Part 1
Okay, so it’s been said a thousand times before, BUT. Why is Tobias’s book cover actor not blond?? It is literally mentioned within the first pages in the book. COME ON SCHOLASTICS! Also, not that there’s not an encounter in this book, but there’s an encounter in every book. So the title is very vague.
“My name is Tobias. A freak of nature. One of a kind.” Buddy.
“One afternoon, I was riding the thermals” Everyone take a drink. (game is: drink anytime any of the kids mentions thermals)
Obviously Dealin’ Dan Hawke is a douche, but... iconic name, man.
“Sorry! I missed the first bus! I just got here!” I’m sorry, Tobias, did you just start your rescue mission without verifying if your backup had arrived yet???
“Although right at the moment she wasn’t pretty- impressive, but not pretty.” Excuse you, elephants are beautiful creatures.
Ya know, I don’t know who has the braincell in this group. Like, individually, they’re all smart and capable and hella competent. But put more than one of them together, and all of that immediately vanishes. Tobias. Rachel. My children. That was the stupidest most needlessly risky plan in this series thus far. I love you, but- (They’re clearly 14.)
“But I was glad to fight the Yeerks. Maybe I just had less to lose than the others.” Baby, no.
“We’re supposed to be rescuing the entire human race from being enslaved by the yeerks.” “I thought you didn’t want to save the world, Marco.” Buuuuuurn. Okay, but I’m glad Tobias is fighting back now. These two are clearly still not friends. But at least it’s a little more equal now.
“Marco and I will probably never be very close.” Eggs and bacon, you’re mistaken.
“I guess girls think [Marco’s] cute because he has this long brown hair and dark eyes.” Ah yes. These girls think he’s cute. Not Tobias. No siree, Tobias does not think Marco is cute. (Anyway, I ship it.)
“I saw Cassie and Jake touch their hands together in a way that could almost have been accidental,” rhkjdsfdguh MY HEART
“Hey, Rachel, you’re not just doing this to save the human race... You get off on the danger.” Huh. I hadn’t realized this was brought up this early on.
“You say you’re no leader, but I’ll go with you.” Okay, but honestly, I love missions where Tobias is like “I have a plan and it is ridiculously stupid. Who’s in?” And everyone else jumps in. Tobias doesn’t take the lead often, but when he does, it’s great. (But also, he couldn’t be the leader long-term. He doesn’t want to anyway, but he has too much on his plate to also deal with leader guilt. He does have the inspiration speech part nailed down though.)
“How many risks could we take before we lost? How long till the five of us were four? Or two? Or none?” Well-
You know, I really want to read the scene where they all chose their bird morphs. Like, I’m picturing Rachel immediately calling dibs on the bald eagle. Cassie being like “ok, fine, this is a peregrine falcon. It’s the fastest-” And Jake immediately calling dibs with a smirk to Rachel. And then Marco being like “wait, no. I want to be the falcon, too”. But Cassie is like, “no, variety. plus both the bald eagle and the peregrine falcon have their downsides” and Marco grumbling about it and acquiring the osprey in defeat.
That scene where Cassie and Rachel are setting each other up for jokes at the guys’ expense? Love them.
Also, Marco and Jake fighting over who gets to morph the alpha male? They’re tiny children and I love them. (also, they’ll grow it out of it fast.)
“She still had nightmares about the shrew experience” omg, Rachel and Tobias are already confiding in each other about their nightmares?? My babies.
“Who had bacon for breakfast?... Rachel? Bacon? I thought you said you were going vegetarian!” Lol.
“Which sounded pretty reasonable. Until you noticed that ‘Cassie’ had her head tilted back and her snout pointing at the sky and was yodeling like an idiot.” I’m telling you, all these kids are hilarious.
“I guess I thought that if I ever started to feel really sorry for myself, I might never stop.” So, up until now, Tobias had not said anything that indicated he was upset about being stuck in morph. He comforted Jake when he told him. He’s made a few jokes about it. He’s gone “oh no, it’s not that bad. I love flying.” He’s put on a strong face and dedicated himself to fighting the war. He’s bottled up all his emotions. And it’s going to be absolutely horrible when they inevitably spill over.
“I just know those two campers were out of there before they knew what hit them.” Yeah... they’re probably Controllers now.
“Not that you’d ever want to give it a hug. Taxxons are gross, disgusting creatures.” Hey!
Marco and Tobias are so smart?? They were immediately like, “huh. This ship is picking up supplies. This is a weakness that can be exploited.”
“I was human. I was a boy named Tobias... But part of me kept saying. ‘It’s a lie. It’s a lie. You are the hawk. The hawk is you. And Tobias is dead.’“ I’ll talk about this later. But for now: :(
Tobias really is the deus ex machina in the group. I can’t count the number of times the kids are in a tense situation and then Tobias comes in for the save. Especially when he’s separated from them. It’ll be like “OMG, WE’RE GOING TO DIE!!!” and then Tobias will show up and like, dive bomb the person attacking them. He’s their eyes in the sky. The team scout. The ace up their sleeve.
So this scene where the kids almost get trapped in morph is probably the most intense scene in the series thus far (at least until the second half of this book). And it’s only a few pages long. But oh man, Tobias. We have him desperately urging his friends to demorph, trying his best to help them even through his own distress. Marco is using him  as motivation to morph faster, and Tobias just has to take it because he knows it’s what Marco needs. The understandable relief from the others as they make it out, and as much as he’s glad for them, there’s the sick realization that this will never be him. He will never be human again. And the pitying glances that he gets afterwards. Which, by the way, he has been putting up with for weeks now without a word. Just... BABY.
I’m going to stop there for now, even though this means that part 2 will be a little longer than usual. But speaking of: major trigger warning for attempted suicide for part 2.
Previous installment here.

I eavesdropped on Secrets of the old world, Planning to abide in Life's great encounter. In depths of the foreign, I violently whirled, An axiom flowed with an unknown cure. Apart from my familiar peregrinations.. In the valley, I found pleasurable quietude. Forging a list of torturous expectations, I coerced my slave to be chagrin and nude. Blotches of copper scattered upon a rosed mattress, A vivacious creature lied naturally before me. The Secret of Life spun on its axis, Indomitably forceful like 10 shots of whiskey. Abolished verses in everlasting fire, Arrogating and begged for by Purgatory. Vanquished philosophy and gluttonous desire, Pervaded in breathless, unwarranted glory. Ambrosial Leto feathered grace round her disciple But the dynamism of carnality was constructed from iron; My devote nature shot a handsome rifle.. Forthwith awestricken, I was offspring of Sirens. Sheathed in silk, I prostrated my sacrifice. I fed once again in a sedated opulence. Though, the speckled creature could not suffice, So in my valleyed domain, I became wonderfully dense. Compulsion engorged within my tongue. Covets whispered inside my perceptive ears. The creature, crystallized and young, Was beginning to be something I quitely feared. His hands vibrantly pulsed with esoteric thought.. A torrid peltry atop an immaculate skull. Infatuation was hostile and abominably caught The feeling..so..complex, so irrational, so cruel. An internal abyss withered like a droughted river. The vigilance harvested my ominous sin, Intractable and stiff, my Siren descent quivered.. My power diminished and my carcass sheepskinned. I offered my captive much more than free reign, I pleaded he accept The Great Golden Throne My ancestors, alarmed, conjured and sang.. Threatening to vex and leave nothing but bone. In his foreshadowed demise, my heart became frail; I nurtured and quarantined my intensely loved treasure. Though, to my dismay and inevitable hell, He grimaced and experienced only displeasure. My beloved revealed a tenacious resentment, What I did was forthrightly less than enough, Locked in chains and distressful commitment, Unwilling to release, his essence was cuffed. My crystallized creature independently liquefied, Unbinding himself to compose his new roots.. In broken devastation, my gentleness died, I awaited to hunt and pass over the moon. From the colorless clouds, I guarded him ceaselessly; I witnessed him propagate and know fervor. Beyond my days, I grasped ahold my fate peacefully Silently being the homesick Observer.

‘Shadow of War’ Will Make Middle-Earth Even More Terrifying
Forget everything you know about The Lord of the Rings and this should go down easier: At some point between Bilbo Baggins’ peregrination to The Lonely Mountain and Frodo’s trek to Mount Doom, let’s pretend someone made yet another ring of power, then wound up throwing down with Sauron himself for the whole of Middle-earth. What, you didn’t catch any of that in Tolkien’s footnotes?
No bother, because it’s the premise of Middle-earth: Shadow of War, a new action-adventure by the same studio (Monolith) that brought us the exemplary Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor a few years ago. Monolith did such a fantastic job with the latter that they could put Transformers and flying monkeys in for all I care.
No surprise, Monolith will double down on its vanguard “Nemesis” system, whereby the game sort of played itself even when you weren’t, albeit for the best reasons. Instead of approaching scripted challenges with fixed enemies, these games create a tribal power pyramid enemies can climb on the fly, both personalizing and destabilizing the map’s geography of conflict. Enemies you’ve encountered will remember you (because that’s not creepy at all). And if they defeat you in battle, they will grow more lethal at your expense, making inevitable rematches that much more grueling and grudging.
The protagonist is once more the Batman-like hybrid ranger-wraith players wielded in Shadow of Mordor. I’m seeing something about forging an army in the interest of turning “all of Mordor against the Dark Lord, Sauron.” To be fair, all this apocalyptic riffing is in keeping with the continuity established in the first game, which ended on a cliffhanger that, given the first game’s acclaim and sales bona fides, all but assured a sequel.
The wrinkle, says Monolith, involves Nemesis now orchestrating the conduct of even more aspects of the world. That includes “Followers,” who will “bring about entirely new stories of loyalty, betrayal and revenge,” as well as “Fortresses,” which “allow players to utilize different strategies to conquer dynamic strongholds and create personalized worlds with their unique Orc army.” (Wait, did they really just say “Orc army”?)
Look for Middle-earth: Shadow of War to arrive August 22 for Windows 10 PCs, PlayStation 4 and PS4 Pro, Xbox One, and whatever Microsoft eventually calls its Xbox Scorpio 4K box that’s due this holiday.

For the FR lore asks: Peregrin sounds like an interesting creature, wanna tell us more about her? DHow did Diciassette and Cymbeline become friends?
On Peregrin:
Tumblr media
Do you ever buy a dragon for an accent and intend to give them lore but just... never do? At least not expansive lore? Peregrin is that.
She's a cryptic figure around the Starwood Strand. Angelic at first glance, but it's clear she's not entirely that, so what is she then? Paradisium isn't sure. Folks figure she's a little bit like Angel, since it's somehow able to talk with her (Peregrin doesn't speak the common draconic language; "triangles" is a placeholder for something more incomprehensible). And Angel's a demon (I promise that makes sense if you look at its lore). So maybe Peregrin is one, too? Not from its world, though. She's something else, and that's all they know.
She doesn't really have a room in the clan. She has her perches of starwood near the entrance, and that makes her happy enough (but it doesn't make Seinaru, the actual starwood fairy of the clan, happy at all). She watches over them with curiosity and occasionally pokes her head in with a calming presence. She seemingly likes seeing Cerasus' workshop most.
On Sette and Cym's friendship:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Man, it's been a while since I've seen these two side-by-side. Their aesthetics are completely opposite of each other, but there's still similarities...
Them being friends was one of the first things I established with adding Cym to the lore, it seems. It didn't even start as anything grand- Sette just offered his room to sleep in on her first night of joining the clan. That was way before he had to worry about the demons, so he was a lot more open with his kindness. (Not to say he isn't open these days, but he is a lot more on guard.)
After that night, they bonded over being magic-focused. While Sette's on the route of being a cleric, Cym still encourages him however she can. And when Penumbra was founded, inspired by her magic techniques, Sette was one of the first to enroll to follow a similar route.
