so I've been reading entirely too many of @bogleech's Pokemon reviews and lamenting the relative lack of creepy fungi Pokemon in the franchise as a whole, and then I saw a muntjac deer with its open face glands for the first time and well, here we are
I call it Mushjack. The white eye spots on the face aren't actually eyes; the real eyes are in the glands between the eye spots.
It's grass/poison and of course it learns spore.

I'd stopped to have a rest & enjoy the view of the small hill opposite. It was a nice quiet area - no other dogs or people around, so I wouldn't have minded if Flynn had gone off & entertained himself for a minute but whenever I turned around to check on him, this was what I saw:
Tumblr media
If I stop, Flynn stops. At least I don't have to worry about losing him!
***
From the same outing... there's a couple sections further along the path which get quite muddy & you can find tracks left by the local wildlife. It was pretty dark under the trees, so pic quality isn't great but you should be able to make out two teeny tiny little hoof prints here, left by a Muntjac Deer! So small in comparison to Flynn's paw!
Tumblr media
Muntjac are odd little creatures. We see glimpses of them, from time to time but they're really shy - mostly we just hear them. From a distance, they can sound uncannily like a distressed dog & it takes a moment to realise... nope. Just a weird barking deer. They are dog-sized though, about as big as a springer spaniel - just with much smaller feet!

WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR THE MUNTJAC
FOR THE @weirdanimal-tournament !!!
The muntjac deer is one of my favourite freaks of nature and here is why.
Tumblr media
look at this skull. looks like a fucking dragon, right?
WRONG. ITS A MUNTJAC SKULL
Tumblr media
These bastards are some of the weirdest freaks you’ll see. on their face, they have scent glands for marking on trees. Instead of doing what almost every other animal does and peeing to mark their territory, they evolved these body horror style glands on their face to do it.
youtube
Tumblr media
They have fangs. why?  because they can. The males use them in territory and breeding fights, but they’re really not as useful as they look. But they’re sometimes called vampire deers, so thats fun.
They bark. like a dog. or they just scream like my dad does when he stubs his toe.
youtube
Heres some other short little fun facts! - they smell absolutely dreadful! - Indian Muntjac have fewer chromosomes than a fruit fly! - they aren’t very big at all! like, 52 cm, which is pretty small for a deer.
Tumblr media
So. VOTE MUNTJAC DEER FOR WEIRDEST FREAK!!!!!

JTTW Chapter 13 Thoughts
Chapter 13 for the @journeythroughjourneytothewest Reading Group! Very nature heavy this time!
On the title of the chapter while “detain” works well enough since they do hold up Tang Sanzang for a little bit, I prefer the other translations going with “entertains” for the J.F. Jenner translation and roughly translated “cares for” for the German one.
Tang Sanzang really enjoys making vows doesn’t he. I hope this won’t come back to bite him later.
Since they get mentioned multiple times this chapter and I already figured out that flowers in this story may not be arbitrarily chosen I looked into the Chinese flower language of chrysanthemums! These lovely flowers.
Tumblr media
First up chrysanthemums are Autumn flowers, which tracks perfectly here given that it is late Autumn. Additionally they apparently are the flower of the ninth moon aka ninth month which is the month in which Tang Sanzang departed, so that works exceptionally well too! Also they symbolize longevity, which could tie into the story as well.
Oooh, the travel group is technically comprised of four people currently, which is deliberately mentioned! And it is the fourth night watch when they set off this time as well! Now if that isn’t blatant foreshadowing through the meaning of numbers.
I really love those little details with flower meanings and numerology.
When Tang Sanzang “was so frightened that his spirit left him” everyone who watched so much as a single anime probably had a very specific kind of image in their head for this.
I’d like to draw some attention to the depiction of those yaoguai in how they interact with each other and that they actually left the horse alone. It makes me see them as not really malicious as such, they kind of just treat humans how humans would treat animals and given that they are in part animal, well you can guess how that fits together.
Ah yes, they didn’t eat him because of his nature. And literal plot armour.
At this point I would also like to present the illustration in the German translation this chapter. Particularly focusing on Tang Sanzang, who is tied up like a little package! I don’t know it looks kind of funny to me context aside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though it’s also interesting because when you imagine someone tied up you tend to do so like in Westerns for example with the rope tied around the arms and chest in a cylindrical manner and not this net-like manner as depicted here.
Tang Sanzang could really just have told Boqin from the start that he doesn’t eat meat. Though to be fair he likely had a lot going through his head at the time.
Lastly with the deer mentioned I would like to show off this neat info graphic I found on different species of deer! Looking at it I noticed how all the deer in the translation are specifically European deer, so those are definitely not the actual kind of deer!
Tumblr media
Subsequently I got curious and checked the Chinese original for some deer. First one is [獐] or Chinese Water Deer! That character is translated as Roe in Google translate, when Musk would at least provide a similar look with their teeth, so I’m happy that Anthony C. Yu chose Musk Deer here.
Then we have [麂], which are indeed Muntjac Deer as the Google translate told me! Turns out what isn’t clear in the info graphic is that there are Muntjac in Europe and Asia! So I find it a bit odd that Anthony C. Yu went with Fallow Deer instead. The J.F. Jenner translation goes with the same translation as Google translate gave me by the way.
The herd of deer later are Water Deer again. The dozen deer mentioned seem to just use the general character for deer, though feel free to correct me if the character [鹿] does mean a specific kind of deer after all.
Also if you are curious what kind of deer meat Boqin ate, it’s Water Deer.

The amount of detail in this hurt, but I like this character so I had to do them justice! ;-;. It was also partially a gift to someone imprtant so sanity be damned!

Anthropomorphic Muntjac Deer
Tumblr media
So an RA at my colleges dorm decided to commission me to draw a Fursona for myself after seeing the other furry commission I did. I don’t know why I drew myself like this. I just picked a muntjac deer for the animal because I think they look cool. I will probably properly open commissions, and make an actual commission price sheet if I get a bigger audience here. But if you want to commission me please feel free to DM and we can see if what you are willing to pay for aligns with what I will work for.

09/07/2023-RSPB Strumpshaw Fen
Pictures taken in this set: 1. A lovely Grey Heron, a key bird of the weekend trip. 2. The majestic Marsh Harrier we so enjoyed seeing from a hide, seeing others well on the walk round. They are such beautiful and striking birds, one I do really love seeing and I've had a fantastic year for them so far. 3. Follow the leader: Mute Swan cygnets. 4. Delicate meadowsweet and great willowherb. 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Views at this picturesque Fen reserve including of the expansive and lovely River Yare. 6. A Woodpigeon with a twig in its mouth on a gate which was a feel good and quirky image to take away from the day.
It really was a brilliant walk round this rich reserve, with seeing my first ever Norfolk Hawkers - exquisite emerald eyed dragonflies dashing around stream and vegetation - the key moments from the day. I feel so lucky we saw them. Brown Hawker, Black-tailed Skimmer, Emperor, possible Southern Hawker and Common Blue Damselfly, Banded Demoiselle and darter were other great dragon and damselflies to see. Comma, Red Admiral white butterflies including Small White and Green-veined White I believe, Large Skipper, Silver Y moth, Kestrel, Sedge Warbler, Jay, Swift, Common Tern, Great Crested Grebe and chicks which was good to see somewhere different to Lakeside, Little Grebe, Mallard and ducklings, Great White Egret a very key bird of the weekend away, ladybird, possible ladybird larva, Common Red Soldier beetle and a marvelous Muntjac Deer shuffling over the path right at the end - a magical and euphoric moment I love seeing them - were other highlights. Other key plants of the many seen on the walk were hemp agrimony, purple and yellow loosestrife, white clover, pineappleweed, heath-spotted orchid, self-heal, herb-Robert, red campion, marsh bedstraw, hedge woundwort, thistle, bird vetch, valerian and plantain.

Hi everyone!
So today was pretty good in that I saw not just birds but also mammals too! We walked down next to a river to a country park, and there were many different types of birds there, from Goldcrests to Chiffchaffs to Blue and Great Tits. I didn't get to take a picture of them due to lighting and low battery, but I'm planning on going there another time to get pictures since there was such a diverse range of birds.
I did get a picture of a Robin and some Mallards, though, which are always good:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But the real excitement is with the mammals I saw! Specifically, a herd/pack/congregation of rabbits and a Muntjac Deer:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They seem to be local to the area, so hopefully, I'll be able to spot them again if I do go back :3
Muntjacs are unfortunately an invasive species so while seeing them is cool, it's sad that they're taking the place of other endemic deer that could be populating the area such as Roe Deer. Ah well... guess thats just how it is.

JTTW Chapter 36 Thoughts
Chapter 36 for the @journeythroughjourneytothewest Reading Group!
We’ve got creatures galore this time around!
Why can’t you give us the slice of life, huh? Why can’t you, the people want to read fluff too! I know I’d love to.
So as I’m attempting to keep track of the passage of time stated in the text there seems to have been a timeskip of multiple years. The changing of seasons up until last chapter only indicated around one and a half years passing, so either Tang Sanzang is exaggerating and only half a year to one year passes, so definitely one Winter since the narration mentioned frost, or it’s really been a couple of years.
Deer, deer, deer! No fallow deer, those are muntjac deer in the Chinese Original. Cute in the silliest way.
Tumblr media
River deer basically yes, our lovely goofy Chinese Water Deer.
Tumblr media
Now hold it! Those are not wolves! In the Chinese Original they are either Dholes or a kind of jackal. All three are in the family of Canidae. The wolf shares the Canis genus with jackals, while dholes and jackals are of the same tribe Canini.
I’m leaning more towards Cuon Alpinus so Dholes, which range throughout Asia and are also called Red Wolf or Mountain Wolf, but that might also be personal bias for I watched the Wild Kratts episode on them.
Tumblr media
They are really social even more so than wolves and just overall very sweet. However they are classed as endangered!
Tumblr media
They also come in a fluffy variant.
Tumblr media
Jackals are really neat too though, here it might specifically be the Canis Aureus commonly known as Golden Jackal, which are native to Eurasia.
Tumblr media
From Anthony C. Yu’s notes I concur the Vajra-guardians definitely do not look like cherubs neither the modern version nor the biblically accurate one. But they might be somewhat similar in function! Cherubim are assigned to protect special places as one of their jobs, so that guardian function might be the similarity that led to the comparison.
Tang Sanzang getting pouty is so endearing, much more than any ‘scared of demon’ instance.
Though in my opinion the monastery should have been able to kick out those guys that were causing needless trouble over multiple years. Give aid to fellow people yes, but if they knowingly and wilfully act out like that they rescind their right to stay.
Again with the property damage, Sun Wukong might have already cut down on violence against people, but no door is safe from him still.
