if I could meet my adolescent self again now I'd tell me, "the reason you couldn't finish your fanfic is because overwriting chrome with a reincarnated oc is not what you wanted. you missed out you missed out on the truth that you love her and wanted more of her you just didn't know how in a narrative where she barely exists even though that's the whole point of her character, that she is diminished and made to barely exist and take up no space, and taking up the same space as mukuro as refuge gave her a place to be until she could assert her own place in the world. you didn't understand that her independence from mukuro was built upon her dependence on mukuro and did not understand the complexities of her agency in that dependence. now delete your fic and do it again"

this is only a minor part of the overall article but:
Summoning Salt noted that the moderation team initially responded with a "full review" in roughly 40 minutes, less than the length of the whole video. Such a swift review process implied that an auto-moderation system used voice analysis to chronicle the number of swear words, and Summoning Salt told Ars via email that YouTube has tools in place to auto-mute what it detects as offending content—but that YouTube doesn't automatically apply them in the case of age-restriction disputes, and using built-in auto-mute tools doesn't necessarily undo the damage done by any moderators' age-gating.
most of the people doing youtube content moderation will tell you that they absolutely expect human moderators to be able to accurately flag hour-long videos in like. ten minutes tops. you just have to scrub through and hope you catch any slurs. i had a chrome extension with a bunch of youtube tweaks including adding a waveform so i could tell if someone started screaming (it also skipped ads because they don't give you an ad-free account, they make you sit through the ads to flag the videos lmao)
i mean i'm still not clear on how videos even made it into my queue (were they random videos? user-flagged? run through an auto-mod before being spit back out to someone who could click a captcha? were they sending them off to multiple moderators and aggregating/averaging the results? no idea, i was just an ~independent contractor~ for a ~third-party company~). the guidance on when to flag for adult language basically came down to "if you were listening to this video on speakers in a public space, would you immediately try to turn it off or mute". if i happened to scrub through and not catch the one minute of someone cursing wildly, i wouldn't flag it; if someone happened to scrub right to the single minute where someone plays a video of someone else cursing, they would probably flag it rather than bother to watch the whole thing to see if it's an anomaly.
anyway if youtube content moderation seems broken it's because it is
