If The Gods Were Kind — cave pt.2
Hullo!!! Welcome to part 2 of the world-building part. We now get to meet Cleo, Bdubs and Impulse! Ain’t that fun? I love writing dialog, usually, but most of the dialog here comes from the CCs videos (god forbid we have all three hours of the session and so I have to look for scraps in other POVs). Anyway, enjoy!

Content warnings: Internalized ableism
After stabilizing himself, he dug a sort of staircase, mining every coal and iron he found on his way. It was difficult mining, it took a lot of energy out of his arms, and had to roll his shoulders and take breaks before continuing. It was even harder going up and down, he had to use everything to help him get up and to get down as gently as he could.
Eventually, he took a look at his communicator, trying to see if it could help him with navigation. On the top right-hand corner, there were coordinates he didn’t see the first time he opened it. He was close to Y 8. Maybe he should go higher, closer to the surface.
While digging up, he almost jumped into lava, and tried to understand what redstone would do. He smelt his iron and managed to craft some shoes and leggings. He came across some gold and wondered what other gemstones were hidden in these caves. As he mined more coal and different types of rocks, he heard faint voices. He looked around him, but saw no one. Maybe they were trapped in the stone.
“Hello?” he called.
The voices yelled, of joy or surprise, he wasn’t sure. Scar walked back and saw a name tag deep in the stone. “ZombieCleo” one read, but he could hear another voice.
“Hellooo?” he called again.
“Hey! Where are you?” a more accented feminine voice asked.
“Um, not sure,” he looked around.
“Here, wait, let me mine to you.”
“Cleo! What if they wanna kill us?” another voice said, displeased and with a much more different accent.
“I’m not gonna kill you,” Scar tried to reassure, “I’m actually very lost.”
He mined where he could hear the voices clearly. The closer he got, the more prominent were the name tags. One was “BdoubleO100”, going back and forth to ZombieCleo and hiding out of his view. Finally, a path cleared, and his eyes landed on a zombie with fiery orange hair.
“Well, hello there,” Scar greeted. He hoped this zombie wouldn’t bite him. He could still feel a gnawing sensation on his shoulder. He ate a pork chop.
“Hi,” she said, hesitantly.
They had a flower crown around her head, red flowers, blue flowers, purple flowers. It was mostly keeping their long curly hair out of her face, or Scar figured that was its purpose. She was wearing a deep blue crop top, which complimented their blueish skin and fitted her plump and compact figure. Their shorts were ripped at the seams and had thigh-high striped socks with walking boots.
“It’s nice to see a face around here,” Scar said conversationally. “Very easy to get lonely.”
She hummed. “Good thing I found Bdubs early on.”
He blinked, not quite sure if he understood what they said (it was hard to understand her with their accent, but he’d manage), and raised an eyebrow. “Deebubs?”
“Bee-dubz,” she articulated and pointed at the BdoubleO100 name tag, still hidden from his view. He tested the name, whispering it and trying to match Cleo’s pronunciation. “That guy over there.”
“Cleo! You can still hide!” someone said in a harsh whisper. She rolled their eyes.
“If he wanted to kill me, he would’ve done so by now.” Cleo crossed their arms, giving a death glare to Bdubs’ hiding spot.
Scar raised his hands in surrender. “Hey, I’m not here to kill anyone.”
She hummed, giving him an unimpressed look. “Good.” She glanced behind her. “Bdubs, come out of hiding, no need to be so paranoid.”
Bdubs shuffled out of his hiding spot. He had cream buzz cut hair, contrasting his darker brownish skin tone, though Scar saw the beginning of dark roots at his scalp. The iron chest plate didn’t cover the long blue sleeves, the same light blue as Cleo’s skin, but framed his barrel-chested and solid body. He had wide eyes and only seemed to be an inch taller than his companion beside him, and Scar was pretty certain he had a good head over Cleo.
“I have my reasons!” he proclaimed.
Cleo rolled their eyes and scoffed. Scar couldn’t hold in his nervous laughter and smiled at the interaction.
“You wanna join us?” Cleo asked him, jerking her head to their partner. Bdubs made a protest noise and Scar hummed, intrigued.
“Sure. What’re you guys doing, exactly?”
“Just mining. Trying to find diamonds and survive the night.”
He gave them a skeptical look, eyebrow raised. “Mining to survive the night? Wouldn’t it be better to find a shelter and sleep?”
“That’s what I said!” protested Bdubs. Cleo scoffed once again.
“We wouldn’t have survived, and I would rather sleep in a bed, thank you very much. A woman deserves comfort.”
Scar couldn’t help but agree. How he would love to lay his back on a soft and comfortable bed, ignoring the ache in his hips and calves. At least, he hoped it would dim the ache. He switched his walking stick sides, shifting his weight, gripping the handle tightly when he felt it wobble.
Bdubs squinted his eyes at Scar’s movements, but didn’t say anything. Or was he looking at Scar’s messy bandage on his shoulder, if he could even call it that? Or even the scars scattered around his body? Bdubs instead came closer to Cleo’s side.
“We should bring you to our main mining spot!” he suggested. Cleo glanced at him and a small smirk formed on their lips.
“Yeah, that way, you’ll meet Impulse too.”
Scar gave them both a bewildered look. “There’s more people?”
“Well, it would be stupid to think we’re the only ones here, in this big world.”
Scar didn’t want to admit that he couldn’t go further into the clearing because of the blue transparent wall blocking the way. But he felt it was important information.
“I-I mean, where I was, there was just a barrier, and I was in a sorta valley. Pretty closed off from everyone,” he chuckled, rubbing the back of his head nervously.
Cleo shrugged. “Fair assumption, then.”
“Hey, we should add you to our contact list!” Scar perked up at that, remembering the second message on his communicator.
Cleo nodded. “Yeah, actually, that’s a great idea. This mine can be quite big, we don’t know when someone will get lost.”
Scar grinned, taking his communicator out of his pocket. “Alright, but how exactly do I add you guys to my contact list?”
“Oh wait, here, lemme—” Bdubs snatched Scar’s communicator, tongue poking out, “—aaaand here we go! Now you have me and Cleo as contacts.”
“Awesome,” Scar said in amazement, looking at his communicator. The contact list and messages were pulled up in a different window. He could still see “Taking Inventory: Achieved”, but instead of indicating he had no contacts, it showed both Cleo’s and Bdubs’ names. He tried to see what other achievements he accomplished, using the arrow to scroll down the list. He had at least ten achievements and felt pride blooming in his chest, ignoring the ache that spread from his eyes to his temples.
Cleo and Bdubs guided him to their main mining spot. His two new companions whispered to each other. Scar could still hear what they were saying, but didn’t bother listening. After all, it was rude listening in on a conversation that didn’t include you. The tunnels twisted and turned, and he could feel his legs almost giving out on him, trembling and incapable of supporting his body weight. He had to continue.
He ate a pork chop, hoping it would give him more energy to soldier on, and leaned more on his barely-holding-it-together stick. Maybe he should have more than a walking stick. But wouldn’t that be more inconvenient? The handle almost fell off, but Scar gripped it tight to keep it in place. Cleo and Bdubs stopped in their tracks. He blinked at them and realized he was quite far from them.
“Are you okay?” Bdubs asked. Scar knew the man was concerned about him. Scar sensed that Bdubs suspected something was up. Whether it was his shoulder or the falling apart walking stick, he wasn’t sure. He smiled widely and stood taller.
“Yeah, don’t worry about me, I’m fine.”
Cleo looked skeptical. “What happened?”
He wasn’t sure if she was talking about the wounds, his mysterious scars, or him clutching his stick like his life depended on it. Which it did, he didn’t know how he would’ve been able to stand up without something supporting him. Strangely enough, the wounds on his shoulder didn’t sting him like they did when he mined.
“I ran into some monsters and couldn’t defend myself properly.”
Cleo squinted their eyes. That wasn’t what they meant, he realized.
“Oh gosh, quick, c’mere.”
Bdubs waved at him to come closer. He tried his best, somewhat still clumsy with his walking stick, even after all that mining. Maybe it was the way his legs were trembling underneath him, or how the ache between his hips and calves got stronger.
When he was close to a chest, a crafting table and a furnace, he saw someone else in the corner of his eye. Bdubs forced him to sit on the ground, a cleaned cloth and water in his hands. Scar let out an “oof” when his butt hit the ground, quite harshly.
“There was someone else down there,” Scar pointed out, squirming to find a comfortable position to sit as Bdubs rummaged in the chest.
Cleo looked down at the hole. “Yeah, that’s Impulse, still trying to find diamonds. Doubt we’re gonna find any here, though.”
He hummed. So this was Impulse. Diamonds might be more important than he first thought, if everyone around him was trying to find them. Cleo began mining close to them. He wanted to ask them if she was also mining for diamonds until Bdubs put the wet cloth on his bite wound. He winced and held in his scream, inhaling sharply instead.
“Sorry, this’ll sting for a while.” Scar let out a breathy laugh, a sarcastic reply sitting on his tongue, but kept the words in. He shifted against the side of the tunnel, trying to sit in a position that wouldn’t remind him of the soreness in his calves and hips. He kept shifting when Bdubs looked up and then looked at his shoulder. “That’s some serious damage you got there—Scar, was it?”
He blinked. Why did Bdubs look up? Did he have a name tag on top of his head? He nodded.
“Did you also get shot?” Bdubs clicked his tongue, as if disappointed in him.
“The skeleton caught me by surprise!” Scar protested.
“You’re lucky this didn’t get infected,” his new medic said instead.
He sighed. He was glad he wasn’t the only person in this world, glad there were people he could rely on.
Someone came closer to them, and his appearance became clearer the more he approached the minimal light torches could provide. His black shirt drooped nicely over his ample and burly body, the lowercase “i” framing his stomach. The brown leggings seemed to be the only sort of armor on his person, sneakers in his feet.
Scar wondered if the leggings were made out of leather, at least they were matching the man’s short hair color. He was around the same height as Scar, maybe even broader than him, which made him think if they were in a fist fight, the man would more likely win. His face supported a five o’clock shadow, masking his pale rosy skin, and a disappointed look. The name tag “impulseSV” hovered over his head.
Bdubs finished patching him up, and Scar stayed seated, knowing it would take him a while to get up, and he really didn’t want to deal with that.
“Did you find any?” Bdubs asked.
Impulse shook his head. He went to Cleo’s tunnel.
“Any luck?” he called.
“Nope!” was the reply.
Scar leaned his head back against the rocks, eyeing them curiously. “What’s so special about diamonds, anyway?”
Impulse turned to him with an offended gasp. Scar gulped. If this was the reaction he was gonna get, he wouldn’t have asked in the first place.
“Diamonds are the strongest material in this world. You can make a diamond sword, diamond armor—”
“A jukebox,” Bdubs interrupted enthusiastically.
Impulse gaped at him and let out a chuckle. “Yes, a jukebox.”
“That’s why we want to find some diamonds,” Bdubs winked at Scar. Scar tilted his head, a bit confused. “We found this record.”
Bdubs took out a disc. It had a green circle in the center, and looked used, as if someone kept using it constantly and threw it away mindlessly. He reached for the disc, which Bdubs gladly gave to him, and touched the rough and bumpy surface. He gave it back to the blond man.
“We really need to find those diamonds.”
Bdubs smirked. “That’s the spirit! You can come help me if you want.”
Scar shrugged. “Sure.”
Scar used the rocks that stood out and the stick to stand up, his body protesting from the awakened slumber. He almost fell because the instant he placed more of his weight on the stick, the handle slipped. Impulse reached out to help him, Bdubs sent him a concerned look, but Scar waved them off, gripping the handle around the stick tighter—it was killing his back but he didn’t have any option. He could take care of himself.
“Dude, your cane is falling apart,” Impulse said, pointing at his stick.
Scar looked at it, and grimaced. He sent them a nervous smile.
“You wouldn’t happen to have any wool or something similar, now, would you?”
Bdubs scratched his chin in deep thought, and searched in the chest. He sighed, dejectedly.
“No, sorry.” He looked at Impulse, who was searching in his inventory.
“I have one big chunk of wool,” he said slowly, “but, I also have leather and some longer sticks.”
Scar beamed at them. “D’you think you can do something with that?”
Impulse chuckled lightly. “I can try, just gimme a sec.”
Impulse took out the materials from his inventory and started tinkering. Scar and Bdubs watched him closely as he took the long stick, placed it beside Scar to measure its height (Scar was holding on to the side of the mine and Bdubs’ bicep), and assembled the materials together. He separated the wool into long strings, and wrapped a small stick in leather, putting some fluffy wool in it. Scar got lost in the intricate movements, squinting to follow them and understand them, only to ultimately be confused.
Impulse inspected the newly made walking stick and gave it to Scar with a smile.
“There ya go, buddy, a sturdy cane just for you.”
Scar gasped in amazement, admiring the cane (it seemed Impulse knew more about it than him), the handle covered in leather that was soft to the touch and didn’t threaten to fall off.
“Thank you so much,” Scar choked.
Impulse patted him behind the back. “Anytime.”
Scar tested the sturdiness of the cane, and once he was satisfied, he took a deep breath and gave Bdubs a wide smile.
“Well, Bdubs,” he extended his hand, letting Bdubs walk in front of him, “lead the way, my friend.”
“I’ll join Cleo,” Impulse called out as the other two went further in the cave.
A long time passed as they kept mining, further away from the main spot. Scar had to take many breaks, even if his cane was better than his last one, it was quite the feat to constantly mine. Bdubs reassured him he wasn’t a burden and continued the search without him from time to time, always coming back with some goodies and wild stories.
Eventually, Scar got a full set of iron armor and even made a clock. He didn’t know you could make a clock with gold and redstone, but it was very impressive to see how accurate it was. It was quite bland, very few details and mostly gold. In the half-circle, the sun and moon were in sync with the actual sky outside. The sun rose in the corner of the hollow half-circle. Bdubs asked for the clock many times, and eventually, Scar gave in and said that Bdubs was the timekeeper. The short man grinned, pleased with his new role.
“This mine is a bust,” Scar complained after they searched for more diamonds.
“This mine is a bust. Cleo was right, we’ll never find diamonds here. Let’s regroup.”
As they reached the meeting spot, Cleo was tapping their foot impatiently and Impulse was mining up in the ceiling. Scar had a gut feeling it wasn’t a good idea to do that, and conveyed the thought. Impulse stopped promptly, and Bdubs started to complain loudly to them, stomping around and checking the clock every so often.
Scar decided to leave them be for a while and explored the cave a bit deeper. With his stone pickaxe almost ruined and his shoulders aching from the mining trip he did with Bdubs, he mined a random spot, mostly to stimulate his tired mind and to have something to do with his hands.
That was until he saw sky blue gemstones in a stone. Diamond ore. He gasped and tried letting the others know of his discovery, changing his stone pickaxe to his iron one. He mostly sounded like he was getting attacked, alarming the rest rather than joining him out of joy.
“What’s wrong, Scar?” Cleo asked, the first who arrived. She gasped as he mined the last diamond ore, grimacing through the soreness of his shoulders and forcing them to move above his head, cane placed on the side.
“What, what is it?!” Bdubs demanded. Scar gave them a diamond each, and grabbed his cane, a big grin on his face.
Impulse gasped. “You found diamonds?!”
“I found diamonds!”
His communicator buzzed in his pocket. He took it out and glanced at it. Beside Cleo’s and Bdubs’ name was green text. He showed it to the others, too tired to comprehend the letters on the screen.
“What does that mean?”
Cleo went closer to the screen while Bdubs squinted at it. Cleo snapped their fingers.
“Right, you didn’t know that. Once you gain contacts, you can see their achievements. I’m so used to feel mine buzzing that I’ve sorta ignored it.”
Bdubs nodded intensively and shifted his eyes at each one of them. “Anyone wants to sacrifice their diamond for the jukebox?”
There was a deep silence, and Impulse laughed. “Nobody wants to sacrifice their first diamond.”
“I’ll do it,” Cleo and Scar offered.
“Nah, it’s okay, I’ll sacrifice mine,” Bdubs waved them off, walking to the crafting table with a skip in his steps.
As they got out of the hole Scar dug (Cleo and Impulse had to help him get out), Impulse nudged Scar’s shoulder.
“Hey, pretty sure I don’t have your contact.”
“Oh right, here,” Scar handed his communicator to Impulse and he put his name on Scar’s communicator and Scar’s name on his.
“We should listen to the disc on the surface,” Cleo suggested.
“Oh, what a great idea!” Bdubs exclaimed. “We can then vibe to it!”
Scar wondered if “vibe” was a word Bdubs invented.
“What does ‘vibe’ mean, exactly?”
Bdubs grinned and cleared his throat. “Well, you see,” Bdubs gloated, “‘vibe’ is what younglings use for, um.” Bdubs frowned, pausing. “I think it means sharing the same mood, but I’m not even sure where it came from.”
Cleo patted his back solemnly, and Impulse shook his head. Scar quirked an eyebrow.
“You also don’t remember anything?”
They all shook their heads. “We’re not really sure why,” Impulse hesitated, looking at the side.
“We’ve just kinda accepted it,” Cleo shrugged.
A long silence fell upon them. Bdubs clasped his hands together, shaking everyone out of the silence.
“Let’s not dwell on this for long, hm?” Bdubs gave them each a stern look. “Let’s focus on going to the surface.”
“Is there a way out?” Scar asked, looking around, leaning more on his cane, so glad to feel steady and the smooth leather on his palm and for the awkward silence to dissipate.
Impulse patted his shoulder, almost making him trip on his tired feet. “Don’t worry, I have a great sense of navigation.”
Scar chuckled nervously and followed them to the surface.

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 11/06/2022 (Post Malone’s ‘Twelve Carat Toothache’)
For a 10th week in a row, Harry Styles is at #1 with “As it Was” – welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS!
Tumblr media
Rundown
This is actually a pretty slow week thankfully, with only Post Malone to really worry about, but that doesn’t necessarily mean there won’t be anything to cover, as there was a decent amount of movement within the chart. Of course, we start with the notable dropouts, songs exiting the UK Top 75 – which is what I cover – after five weeks in the region or a peak in the top 40. Sure, “Levitating” by Dua Lipa exiting isn’t a surprise considering how easily it can come back, but we also have “Charmer” by N-Dubz only lasting two weeks and “Prince Andrew is a Sweaty Nonce” only lasting one, with both being expected, but the latter being a bit disappointing. In terms of long-term losses, we can say farewell to “Black Beatles” by D-Block Europe, “Everything’s Electric” by Liam Gallagher, “MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT” by Elley Duhé and finally, “Used to This” by Wilkinson and Issey Cross, which is a shame since I think it could have gotten higher than #33 but it had a long run.
What’s unique about this week is the amount of returning entries, which is kind of sizeable. Two are songs that will move in and out like “Save Your Tears” by The Weeknd at #72 and “Finesse” by Pheelz and BNXN, but we do have two unique stories, those being “Shotgun” by George Ezra at #75 thanks to residual album hype and “God Save the Queen” by the Sex Pistols boosted to #57 thanks to a jubilee-themed re-release. It’s a pretty weak Sex Pistols cut and that’s even by their standards, so I’m not thrilled it’s back but the message still lands decades later. Our notable gains – songs up at least five spots from last week – are also kind of interesting, as we have “Stay the Night” by Sigala and Talia Mar at #56, “Churchill Downs” by Jack Harlow featuring Drake at #52 thanks to the video, “House on Fire” by Mimi Webb at #44, “Don’t Forget My Love” by Diplo and Miguel at #35, “Last Last” by Burna Boy entering the top 40 at #29 (I’m really kind of baffled with this one), “Cooped Up” by Post Malone featuring Roddy Ricch getting the album boost to #18 (it should be concerning that this is Post’s highest-charting song), “Afraid to Feel” by LF SYSTEM zooming up off of the debut to #13, “Green Green Grass” by George Ezra entering the top 10 at #9 (joy) and finally... well, that’s when we get to our top five.
Our top five this week, bottom to top, consists of “SPACE MAN” by Sam Ryder surging up to #5, “About Damn Time” by Lizzo at #4, “Go” by Cat Burns and, just missing the top, “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)” by Kate Bush at #2, with “As it Was” of course at the top. Now, before we get to our new arrivals, I’m going to discuss some albums that didn’t make an impact on the singles chart – and you may notice a trend with most of these.
Off the Charts
EGOT the EP – CyHi
I wanted to give Kanye’s protégé turned ghostwriter a chance on this EP that CyHi, I suppose no longer “the Prynce”, put out but this just feels embarrassing. Sure, CyHi still has a recognisably raspy voice and his flow isn’t awful, but none of the hooks click and CyHi’s brand of vaguely introspective flexing and punchline bars don’t sound as interesting on here as they have on features prior, probably due to the really sub-par production where each beat is as stiff and as generic as the next. My favourite track is “Help Me God”, but that’s not saying much as I didn’t like anything here.
Get Used to It – KayCyy
Again, I really wanted to give another one of Kanye’s protégés turned ghostwriters a chance, but for an album running at nine short tracks, barely below 30 minutes, you’d think it went by at least a little bit quicker. Gesaffelstein is nowhere to be seen on production here unlike KayCyy’s last project, which leaves a lot of this feeling oddly generic, and lacking in the unique department that KayCyy was able to ride pretty effortlessly. Ironically, on more standard pop-trap production, he sounds awkward and stiff. That’s not to say any of the features really shine here either, it just feels very bog-standard, which is kind of the case for a lot of these new releases. My favourite track is “Look What I Found” with Lancey Foux.
Chronophage – Chronophage
This feels like the definition of standard indie rock. It’s well-made, sure, but to the sacrifice of character and whilst I do see some new rave energy in tracks like “Burst the Shell” or pretty compelling songwriting in the catchy “Summer to Fall”, both my favourite tracks here, the rest is pretty rote filler that isn’t dynamic enough for it to all come together. It’s fully okay, and I think someone who is more into their indie rock could enjoy it, but it’s not for me.
You Can’t Kill Me – 070 Shake
Okay, so for the final time, I wanted to give Kanye’s protégé turned ghostwriter a chance and it actually worked out because this is a great album. Sure, it’s far from perfect since there is some filler and some of both the writing and production can feel at times non-descript, but throughout the vast majority of this project, with a really unique sound in alternative R&B, where Shake feels simultaneously hollow and distant as much as she is intimate, and given the cover art shows them faceless... that may just be part of the point here, to undermine all of the poetic romances, warning that the longing closeness will eventually become a distant obsession. The strings sound unnatural and MIKE DEAN’s production is once again pretty otherworldly, with Shake’s weird way of making voice cracks and bizarre inflections work completely. It ends on a bit of a sour note which is unfortunate because the middle part of this album is legitimately excellent and one of the more nuanced, if cryptic, R&B albums I’ve listened to this year. My favourite track is “Body” with Christine and the Queens. Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming...
NEW ARRIVALS
#71 – “Lonely Heart” – Europa (Jax Jones and Martin Solveig) and GRACEY
Produced by Jax Jones and Martin Solveig
Whilst often charting on their own, EDM DJs Jax Jones – from London – and Martin Solveig – from Paris – also team up as part of Europa, an alias that the two producers have released just three songs under. Their previous hits “All Day and Night” and “Tequila” hit the top 25, despite being really uninteresting and not all that different from what Jax Jones is doing – sadly, Solveig’s more melodic and anthemic form of house isn’t in right now so he seems to take a backseat. Maybe this new single is destined for the same success and well, I can’t say it won’t be a hit, but I can say that GRACEY sounds faceless over an instrumental that really could have done without having any vocals on it, as I kind of like it a lot if I’m completely honest. Sure, the stuttering vocals work well with the flubbering synth bass but that doesn’t make it any less annoying in the chorus, which is a shame because the tension here builds to a point that is both effective and not anti-climactic like most slap house, because expectations aren’t risen too high. What we do get instead is a more muted piano loop, a slightly subdued yet still pumping kick, as well as a uniquely tight perc in the drum pattern that adds some needed groove. The ominous tone of the warbling synth bass in that drop feels like it was cathartic but in a bizarrely ineffective way that kind of endears it to me, especially when it brings in the casual Y2K-era guitar loop: it all sounds reminiscent and desperate, which is fitting for the content that is a typical post-breakup track. This isn’t all that compelling as a full song, but I guess it doesn’t need to be, and if anything, I’m kind of excited to hear remixes of this, as it is decent and it may as well grow on me from here. For Jax Jones, that’s pretty impressive.
#63 – “Vegas” – Doja Cat
Produced by Yeti Beats and Rogét Chahayed
Okay, so you make a movie about Elvis Presley – aptly titled ELVIS – and for the soundtrack single with Doja Cat, you sample the original 1953 song by Big Mama Thornton instead of his version? To be fair, the original is probably better and I can imagine that Doja Cat would prefer to rap over beats that sample the black woman he covered and made famous rather than the gentrified, pop-friendly version, though I’m not sure that would fit what this film is trying to say, which we’ll see when it comes out. Naturally, we have some modern re-interpretations of Elvis songs from people like Eminem, Kacey Musgraves and Swae Lee, but Doja Cat’s is the pre-soundtrack release that actually charted. What surprised me about this is how organic a mix this was for a trap beat, with the stock horns and filtered sample vocals, as well as a slightly creepy show tune piano that all get hammered by the kicks and 808s, whilst Doja rants about this guy similar to the original track. Given that “Hound Dog” is comically accusing a man to be obsessed with sex, Doja’s bars about this guy that peaked in high school and is crawling back despite not being “the man” are pretty confidently delivered... so why isn’t it clicking with me? Well, part of it might be Doja’s flow and cadence that seems to slip around the beat rather than fully lay on top of it, which would work in a context other than this, where she’s supposed to be a bit more domineering. As it is, I’m not sure she can keep up with the sample in the chorus as she coos more, and her zanier delivery in the second verse, where I’m pretty sure she outright kills the dude, just doesn’t ramp up enough energy. The odd censorship might hurt it as well, as a lot of the bite is taken out of it by the inconsistent muting, especially the flow actually starts to gain momentum. There’s definitely a lot of potential here, but with a kind of unchanging beat, it just doesn’t get there for me.
#61 – “Distraction” – Polo G
Produced by CuBeatz and Southside
Polo G took a couple months off – seemingly all he’s willing to take – and is back with a new lead single, and lyrically, it shows some promise. Polo G has always had a conscious tinge to the gang violence and paranoia, and with the addition of increased fame over the past few years, it’s gotten even more compelling, as was shown in “RAPSTAR” from last year which did grow on me. Sadly, this may have been a moment where Polo G realised the formula, as I do think a lot of ground is re-tread. That’s not to say there isn’t depth here, as the first verse talking about how he still has friends in the hood who are prone to violence but keeps them because loyalty is more important to him than a couple bodies is pretty compelling and honestly quite sad... but the second verse is more gang violence and paranoia without much depth to it all. As for the instrumental, we have your typical Polo G acoustic guitar loop accompanied by a somewhat awkward trap beat that is definitely not Southside’s best work, considering how slapped-on those 808 bass hits feel, as well as some unfitting synth flares and an overall atmosphere that fits for the content, but doesn’t allow Polo G to do much with his flow, as he just has his typical vaguely melodic cadence with frequent punch-ins, which by the end of the second verse sounds exhausted and bored, with the chorus not really having much to differ from the verses. If an AI were to be fed Polo G songs and tasked to produce an average, I think it’d sound like this, which is a shame because, once again, the potential is here.
#47 – “I Ain’t Worried” – OneRepublic
Produced by Simon Oscroft, Tyler Spry, Brent Kutzle and Ryan Tedder
I really didn’t think OneRepublic would still be trying to have hits, considering that if I were Ryan Tedder, I’d just live off of “Counting Stars” royalties for life – as he probably can – and then write a few songs for people here and there. The situation unfolded a bit more clearly when I realised two things, however: firstly, this song was made for the Top Gun: Maverick soundtrack, so it’s not necessarily a lead single. Secondly, it samples “Young Folks”, a 2006 song by Swedish indie pop group Peter Bjorn and John, which I didn’t recognise initially... until I heard that iconic whistling melody that I’d hear many a time elsewhere in advertisements and soundtracks. OneRepublic did come, vaguely, from the late 2000s pop rock scene – if you can call it that – so it makes sense they’d crib from a folkish tune, even if that song is probably better than anything OneRepublic has ever done. With that said, I was curious to what they did with the sample... and it turns out that the whistle was actually re-arranged to fit with Tedder’s vocal melody that reminds me more of Tame Impala’s “The Less I Know the Better” than it does of “Young Folks”. It’s not a bad flip though, and I do think the bass and drums make for a decent groove, at least before the chorus where the multi-tracking and awkward pitch-shifting sounds messily layered over Ryan Tedder, whose falsetto isn’t awful but was not made for a high-paced, carefree song like this that doesn’t exactly pull off the fearless tone it wants to. It’s a completely fine single though, and honestly more than I expected from both a soundtrack song and a track that samples “Young Folks” – the delayed drop of the final chorus is a level of intricacy I was not expecting, even if it’s simple: I was half-expecting for the whistle melody to just be layered on a trap beat and lazily sung over. So, good job, guys, I guess? This week so far is full of missed potential... and given that our last two songs are from Post Malone, this trend doesn’t seem like it’ll be fading.
#40 – “Lemon Tree” – Post Malone
Produced by Post Malone, Louis Bell and Charlie Handsome
Twelve Carat Toothache is kind of a mess. It feels transitional or even unfinished in the terms of Post’s career, as he clearly puts not nearly enough effort into either the rap or pop cuts on here, which feel phoned in and honestly really bitter and pissy in a way that doesn’t flatter the stiff grooves drenched in insane amounts of reverb. In stark contrast, the more experimental and honest balladry typically has Post kind of hitting it out the park, with songwriting that may be on-the-nose but is at least more profound than starting off the second verse on “Insane” by repeating “second verse” four times. A mess is what I expected, and given that the theatrical and wistful “Wasting Angels” with The Kid LAROI genuinely sounds excellent, I got at least something good out of this record, which with some refinement that his label doesn’t seem all too willing to give him, it could have been a lot better (though I don’t think that would have prevented the #3 album from underperforming). I know a lot of people did not like “Lemon Tree”, but we actually have two sides of the album debuting, and this song is pretty great. Sure, the “lemon tree” metaphor is far from new or unique but the depressing sing-songy tone makes Post sound absolutely hopeless and frustrated over the wonky synths that scape around the distant chanting and honestly crappy-sounding acoustic guitars with as much faux twang as some of Post’s pronunciations here. I don’t really like how echoed the kick drum is when it comes in, but it adds some needed tension to the song to make time really feel like it’s catching up to him, so it’s not a complete whine and there’s something desperate here. It doesn’t entirely capture what songs like “Love/Hate Letter to Alcohol” do, but it’s one of the best tracks on that album, and I’m glad it’s charting, even if it absolutely will not last. Sadly, the next song from Post is on the other side of the spectrum.
#19 – “I Like You (A Happier Song)” – Post Malone and Doja Cat
Produced by Louis Bell and Jasper Harris
I don’t like to be this straight-forward but... this is ass. We get a monotone “cutesy” piano lead drenched in too much reverb to sound relaxing at all, a scratchier drum beat that feels like it’s taking wholesale from the same West Coast bounce as “Cooped Up” but sounding even stiffer, and not fitting any of the delivery. Sure, you could call the chorus from Post cute or fun, but his warbling just sounds silly on a more lighthearted song here, with an exhausted delivery that really shows how little Post cares about pop songs like this. It’s telling that he strains more when the darker bass hits at the end of the first verse hit and he’s able to warn Doja about incoming betrayal, and he sounds like he actually cares. Doja sounds even weedier and more nasal than usual, and I like the cooed harmonising in the chorus, especially with the retro-sounding synths, but the verse is dull and non-descript. Also, what is with Post and half-written, malformed bridges this album cycle? Once it gets into the wonkier, basically future bass beat in the outro, it actually sounds like it has some character with the flute... but then it ends, and Doja doesn’t even rap on that beat which sounds a lot more fitting for her tones. I hope this doesn’t stick around, even if I’m generally rooting for Post even with a worse album than his last, because I can see why this failed and I don’t think it’s largely his fault... but knowing the charts, this’ll be the song they make the hit. I guess Fleet Foxes are too beyond the UK public.
Conclusion
Fittingly for the quality of the album, Post Malone is getting both extremes here, with “Lemon Tree” as Best of the Week and “I Like You (A Happier Song)” with Doja Cat as the Worst of the Week. Maybe that says more about me than it does the music itself. As for the Honourable Mentions and Dishonourable Mentions, I can’t really say anything is either that great or even close to bad here, so take it with a grain of salt when I give “Distraction” by Polo G the Dishonourable Mention and... I can’t really believe I’m saying this, but Jax Jones, Martin Solveig and GRACEY the Honourable Mention for “Lonely Heart”. As for next week, I can’t really see much of interest disrupting the charts so for now, thank you for reading and I’ll see you next week!

8/26/17, 6:27pm - Some Kinda Closure pt 3
So this week had some shenanigans. Got drunk with aaron and cody, found out gay guys think I’m hot as shit, so that’s always a nice ego boost. Also I talked to Aaron and these guys at the bar about me joining their amateur pool team. They said I’m gonna be on the very low elo end of the spectrum (he said I’d be like a 2/9) but that makes sense considering how it’s probably the exact same as melee. I’m pretty fucking pumped to get into that.
Finally drug it out of Angie that she was like kinda ghosting me so that I could start hitting up girls on tinder again. There was this cross dresser dude who wanted to drive an hour and a half round trip just to give me an NSA blowjob before i went to work, and I was both perturbed and extremely flattered. Like how thirsty do you have to be to just want to go down on someone? Am I like that? Is that how girls think about me when I want to drive out to sleep with them? Crazy. But super neato. Ended up passing on it, was excited to cross trans off my bucket list but he wasn’t actually trans just liked dressing as a girl. Does that count? hm.
Anyway, dealt with a bunch of bullshit in parking fees, my laptop’s been on the fritz, that could be better, but nbd. Finances are super stable right now so that’s great. Bought new scrubs and I look great in them and they feel wonderful. Thought I’d hate this brand but feels fine.
Been playing a fuckkkkton of hearthstone instead of melee. This new set made my deck ALMOST viable but there’s some op bullshit going around. So I’m just trying to see how high I can take it, but I think I’ve peaked. Gonna unlock this nifty card back and call it quits unless there’s a patch. Was saying I’d try to make legend by the end of the year but if that means playing the op classes then that sounds fucking gay lol. Which is ironic, I think about how i’ve said a ton of times in melee “if you didn’t think your character (/class) was the best, why would you play it?” and yknow I guess if I was trying to win that’d be a reasonable thing to think but it’s just fun. So nah. Anyway, I really wanna kick it into gear with melee soon though, so gotta take a break from it, I’ve been playing hearthstone like incessantly lol since I’m like the only person in the world trying to make this deck work I’ve been doing all the experimenting on my own.
Ok so all of this post probably could’ve been skipped if it weren’t for this shit that went down on tuesday at the melee tournament. HAD to make a post to tell this story because it blew my mind.
I show up to play dubz with weilin, and there’s this girl with downs in line in front of me. She’s telling the geeks cashier melissa, who I had just gotten in trouble for flirting with a few weeks ago, that she wanted to enter the tournament but didn’t have any money so what could she do. She was like uhhh what. no it costs money for the prize. And she’s like yeah but I don’t have money. And i just stepped in and was like it’s no problem, I’ll cover her because melee is cool as fuck and I didn’t want her to feel like she wasn’t welcome just because she didn’t have money. Lex later told me that was a good look, bc melissa must have told him, but I tried to shrug it off because I was trying to be cool and not tell anyone about it hahaah.  So me and weilin do alright, ALMOST fucking beat blackchris and sneak but i choked, and we had this crazy great set against dashtip where we had a 5 stock comeback, but then got demolished by hifiRone. Fucking sucked, I felt like we could’ve beat them but I also felt really spent. I didn’t really sleep well the night before from playing too much hearthstone. So intermittently throughout the tourney I’m chilling out back on the steps staring at the tree and the sky and thinking about how that baby blue and green are the best colors and just trying to zen out, but when I go out before my singles bracket, Nicole, the girl with downs who I paid for, is hanging around outside.
I decide to be polite and say hey and talk to her for a bit, even though I’m really out there to be as alone and quiet my mind as much as possible. I ask her how the tournaments going for her and how she’s doing and she says it’s fun and she’s great but she’s been really upset lately. I say oh no, what’s the matter. She says that her sister’s been trying to have a baby but that her other sister just had a baby so she didn’t want her to. I say well that’s a little silly wouldn’t you want both your sisters to have kids? She says yeah, but the first sister’s daughter passed away. I don’t remember the wording she used, but to me it sounded like a miscarriage of like an infant. So I go into my like neutral condolences like “so it goes, these things happen but that’s why it’s more important for your sister to have a baby too right?” Yknow, because slaughterhouse 5 is still my go to for dealing with death. She says well no, when my niece got hit by a truck it really scared me. I’m like WHAT. she got hit by a truck? She says yeah. And she looked at me like she wanted me to help but I couldn’t do anything to save her. She just looked at me in the eyes as she died. I keep having nightmares about it So I was like hooooly shit. That’s understandable. That sounds horrible.
But just like that she was off the conversation. We talk about something else for a moment and then I’m staring up at the tree again and she says “I have a boyfriend.” So I say that’s great, is he nice to ya. (I’m thinking this girl is like 16 or something, turns out she’s 25 like me). She says well no. He hits me and whenever I annoy him he punishes me. I’m like WOAHHH WHAT THE FUCK. that’s not okay. you’ve gotta tell him he can’t do that. You’re a person like anyone else and you don’t deserve that no matter what fuck that shit fucking call the cops if he treats you like that ever. EVER. I go on like this for like a While because she says like he’s a grown man who can do what he wants and I say well You’re a grown woman and so you can do what you want to so grown people can’t do that to each other it’s fucked up.
All that shit like rattles me, man. I’m like thinking about how shitty someone can have it and how fucking silly it is for me to be worried about anything. I feel like horribly depressed and for the first time think about quitting the tournament before i get knocked out. I just play it out half assed and head out to go home, but someone out front gives me a cig and some random strangers just introduce themselves and start talking to me and it makes me feel really good about life again. Like yknow it sucks that people have it so bad off, and it’s unfair that I have it so much better off than other people. But I have to remember from all the shit that’s happened that my life is fucking excellent and I’m doing really goddamn well. I love my life, it’s still fucking awesome.
But on that, I’ve gotta wrap this up and head out. I’m leaving work and seeing this beautiful chinese girl from tinder in just a few minutes. Gonna drink and chat and listen to some good indie rock. Should be excellent. And if not lol I have another date with this skinny cute uncg girl tomorrow. Fuckin killin it lmaoo.
Wish me luck, fam.
