Has Miraculous Lost its Innocence?
Just got an ask from @tallwriter asking if Miraculous has lost its innocence permenantly, but my inbox ate it. Sorry.
So, just to be clear, I'm not really sure I understand the question, so I'll answer it in a few different ways.
Will Miraculous Ladybug ever return to primarily catering towards its younger demograghic again? No, I don't think so. It seems pretty determined to interact with older fans and grow up with its audience. I doubt it's going to backtrack. Which is kinda a shame, because one of the things it seems determined to lose is its episodic nature in exchange for an arc. Unfortunately, the episodic nature is not the writer's strength, and arc plots are...difficult for these writers. Their inexperience in this type of writing shows. Their style of arc building how also lead to them not being able to contain their stories in small chunks anymore, which leads to me ...not enjoying them as much, along with them following this weird piece of writing advice to make whatever is the most painful thing to happen to the characters happen.
On a side note, for any writers out there, please do not follow this advice. For a stronger story with a more coherent theme, figure out what your theme is and try to come up with conflicts that might naturally arise from this, and would enhance your theme instead of distract from it. Think of it like cooking. No matter how tasty all the ingredients in your kitchen can be, you can't make them all, and some foods do not pair well. Figure out what you're working towards, warm and savory? Cool and refreshing? Healthy and lean? Then go towards that. A triple layer chocolate came next to grilled salmon and roasted mixed veggies is an ...odd choice that would raise some eye brows. Is Miraculous always going to have mature themes? Miraculous has always had themes of bullying and child abuse from the beginning. Part of why I liked this show was its realistic depiction of emotional abuse with Adrien, and its refusal to adhere to the trope that is the school bully somehow being the most popular girl at school. Considering how its aiming towards an older audience now, and it's never shied away from subverting comon trope expectations, I do not expect this to change.
However, that is not to say that I enjoy every trope subversion that MLB has done, nor do I think that it has always handled mature subjects very well, but I'll touch on that a bit more in my next section.
Have I Lost My Faith in Miraculous Ladybug Permenantly
Short answer: No. But it's going to need a lot of back bedaling and extremely good writing to make me invested in the series again.
Most of this is related to one unfortunate plot point, the mishandling of child abuse. Of course, that's not the only issue. I also do not like Lila. She is my least favorite character in the entire series. I do understand what the writing team is trying to do with her. They messed up with her character during the episode "Chameleon" and they are trying to fix that error. It is an admirable effort, but unfortunately their attempts to fix that issue have not rendered a villain that is likable or is clever and easy to hate. Unfortunately, each time I see her, I see the hand of the author every time she shows up. Everything about her is contrived, and I do not believe that she could have all these lies. Furthermore, the handling of Chloe in Seasons 4 and 5 also seemed unnaturally spiteful and petty. Perhaps, they were trying to backtrack and make the character someone fun to hate, but unfortunately, they could not. Each time she appeared, I could only sense ill intent from the author, and it was not a good look. The absolute final straw was when Chloe is revealed to have a learning disorder, and Marinette takes the time to say that it is unfair for Chloe to get accomodations for her disability because she's been taking steps to mask it by having Sabrina do her work for her. This does not make me dislike Chloe in the way the authors apparently thought I would.
However, the biggest flub of all is Adrien Agreste. He is abused. I could use an abuse checklist, and he'd hit most if not all the boxes. The show is still one of the most realistic decpictions of emotional abuse in the media and a good demonstration of abuse, why people might not recognize the abuse, why a victim might make excuses for their abuser, why a victim might not believe they are abused, and in season 5, there was an excellent depiction of the honeymoon/apology part of the cycle. I am honestly so shocked at how realistic and well portrayed Adrien's abuse is compared to the stereotypical abused woman who's got bruises and blaming it on walking into a door. BUT dear god. There is so much victim blaming towards Adrien. Adrien is too weak to stand up for himself. Adrien needs protecting from his own fragile emotions. Adrien can't know information. Adrien keeps fawning. He keeps making VERY concerning statements about himself, his feelings, his relationships to people, and no one realizes how fucked up it is. No one challenges him. The narrative, at several points, ends with his fucked up abuse logic being the end-point of the conflict. In order for Miraculous Ladybug to regain my faith in it, I need for people to challenge the fawning. I need for Adrien's unhealthy behavoirs and mindset to be challenged. I need for those behavoirs to be shown as wrong. And I need for the victim blaming to be shown as wrong. I need for people to understand what they did was wrong.
The senti-monster thing, by the way, DOES NOT HELP. It is not a good metaphor for abuse. Gabriel and Adrien was a good representation of a parent abusing their own child, now it's a representation of a creator abusing his creation. There is so little representation of a parent abusing their biological offspring. Why destroy it?
Did the authors not think the audience would be able to understand why Adrien obeys without magic? By making him controlled by an item, they undermined the whole abuse theme.
Adrien should be controlled by the man who raised him. The man he loved his whole life. The man who should've loved him. The man everyone told him loved him and knew what was best for him.
Adrien has been emotionally crushed his whole life. Told he's impulsive, too emotional, that he never makes good descisions, and the only way for him to be worthy of love is to be obedient, to be unresisting, to be perfect. He should think that molding himself to whatever people wants him to be is right, is expected, and his friends should challenge that. But they don't.
Each relationship Adrien has has been carved away besides Marinette and Plagg. Marinette will not help him. She cannot help him. Plagg is an abuse victim whose also internalized worldviews similiar to Adrien. He teaches him how to rebel. He understands these rules, but Plagg cannot acknowledge them as healthy.
Miraculous can restore my faith by re-aligning its abuse structure. Backpedaling and saying that abuse victims are not weak because they bend their knee. That sometimes they see obedience as the only option to survive, and that's okay. That victim blaming is not okay. That accomodation is good and necessary, and its wrong to be a jerk about it. That fawning is unhealthy. That molding yourself to what others want you to be is unhealthy. That judging your self-worth on how useful you are or how happy you make other people is not healthy.
I do not think it will do that. But it could. And the fandom has done that, so I will continue interacting with the fandom.

something i thought about...
raine and eda broke up bc eda pushed raine away instead of letting them help her with the curse. eda was never honest about it with them, which hurt her partner greatly.
now... luz shares the same issue, more so in seasons 2 and 3, as she lies to amity, her girlfriend, more than once. "eclipse lake" shows us amity being extremely insecure about their relationship, hence why she wants so badly to be luz's "awesome girlfriend". although we see amity being conflicted about luz lying to her at first, and rightfully upset with luz in "reaching out" when she unintentionally lets alador know of amity's whereabouts, in the end amity is never allowed the same reaction as young raine when they broke up with eda.
i'm not saying that luz and amity should've broken up or that luz deserved to get yelled at for grieving her father. it's understandable why luz avoided it as much as she did. what i'm saying is that amity is never allowed to feel hurt by luz's actions, despite them being understandable - which is what makes raine and eda's breakup realistic. raine isn't angry at eda, they're just... hurt. they can't deal with her doing this to them AND herself.
season 3 then? luz and amity simply have no talk about this at all. luz lied to her AGAIN, amity is all cool with it, and even after "thanks to them", luz is still planning to break up with amity. again, this comes from severe self-blame, and it makes sense, but it just feels unfair to amity, y'know?
it's like i said in another post, luz only gets away with everything in the show. she messes up and never suffers any consequences (which is different from being horribly punished btw). she gets the fantasy tale she always wanted. she is chosen by the literal god of the boiling isles.
the whole point of toh is that everyone and everything is complex and flawed. but the protagonist never gets to change at all, and it frustrates me very much.

I genuinely really, REALLY love your hometown au concept- the fact it's a no powers/no capes au, but also NOT, is really cool? Like exploring what it'd look like if these kids tried to be heroes/vigilantes, but in a realistic way where they're regular people, instead of a "this takes place in a comic book world" way, is something I'm so fond of because it's like combining the things we already love but in a way that makes it all so much more real? Idk, it's nice! Also your comments about Jason needing walking aids make so much sense because now looking back I can see that in that snippet of Jason catching Tim sneaking in, he's sitting in what I presume is actually a wheelchair. Anyways, I wanted to ask what's Kon's deal in the hometown AU, parental figure wise- without the whole Superman v Lex thing, how exactly are both of them connected to him?
Thank you!!! Yes Jason is in a wheelchair in that comic I didn't want to make it super apparent since I wasn't sure what I was doing with hometown quite yet and I have definitely changed a few things since then. (Like- tim is no longer in high school I've aged them all up to their early twenties) but that's stayed.
Kon. Conner. Is uhhh OK. Ok. Clark is an investigative journalist known for exposing corporate injustice and helping workers rights whether it be proving unfair hiring practices or exposing like actual literal crimes against nature. He and Lois are a team and they are very, very good at what they do.
Lex luthor is still lex fucking luthor. But superman doesn't exist. Instead of trying to clone Kal, he's going the Smallville route and trying to clone himself. But he wants a eufenically perfect version of himself. So he starts experimenting. Clark is in the middle of a very big expose about lexcorps workers rights violations and he won't stop hounding them and is sooo determined to make them know theyre doing something wrong. And lex, freak that he is, thinks that determination and strong sense of will is very admirable, if not misplaced.
So he wants to like- breed that in. To the clone. Because he's a fucking eugenicist. Except I am very adamant that the combination of two people is not a clone that's a baby.
Anyway- conner is a test tube baby clone amalgation but he ISNT aged up- since they're not trying to fast track a superman weapon they let him age normally. Because again- lex is trying to make himself. Clark has been digging into the shit at lexcorp for YEARS and he keeps finding new horrors and new crimes against man. And like it's worse every time. And the worst one of all? This guy he's obsessed with taking down? He *made a baby* with him and Clark is so fucking freaked out when he finds out.
Like of course he takes conner. But he also doesn't want conner. Conner is like 3 at this point. Clark drops him off at his parents farm and conner is basically raised there by his grand parents. Clark.....visits. (Lex doesn't give a shit but WILL start hounding conner to come stay with him and learn business/evil stuff when he turns 18. It's actually part of the main PLOT of hometown so I'm not gonna get into it)
Conner meets tim as kids because he gives him horse riding lessons because I'm very adamant that since tim is a rich boy from New England he KNOWS how to ride a horse. It's a given. I just want conner to be the one to teach him and maybe stable his horse for him. You know. They can have their horse girl romance movie.
(Not related to anything else but bruce is So Fucking Mad at Clark when he finds out he has a kid he's been neglecting. Like surprise idiot you have to take care of your kid it doesnt matter that you never asked for him conner didn't exactly ask to be made either.)

Infinite thing™️ idk how to start actually saying:
Probably will turn into rambles! I just like him a lot and think about how his story is shown to us;
Tumblr media
I don't think he ever had like a 'normal' childhood, or life for that matter. Considering he had a squad composed of the same species as him, who look very similar to him;
Tumblr media
(sorry jackal fans I do NOT think they would all realistically look near exactly the same unless they were related, like look at the differences between the hedgehogs).
I think he was born into this, maybe not born into being a mercenary but at the very least he was born into being nomadic. But at one point or another it either became unviable ; or people got greedy and wanted to try for more, thus leading them to be mercenaries.
I think it's safe to say that he very clearly already didn't like the world, due to being raised oddly. (even if he wasn't, you don't just become a mercenary for fun; they needed money for some reason), so when he views his idealized version of the world and it's literally a barren wasteland..
Tumblr media
I don't view it as inherently just for like. Evil purposes. (Though I'm not denying him being evil, he very clearly is)
The point I'm getting at is when this comic released and I kept seeing people be like "oh i can't believe he just left his squad-" HE DIDNT..... okay.... and this line specifically kinda tells you that.
Tumblr media
They say "Don't be tempted, we'll be fine" OKAY. So the worry here, is that they WILL die. He doesn't want that! Why would he? What Infinite's being given right now, in his eyes, is ultimate power, and the insured safety of his squad. Sounds like a win-win on his part? And there isn't much room to negotiate.
People comment on this panel a lot; where he's seemingly nonchalant,
Tumblr media
But I imagine it's him partially playing to cool, as to not worry his squad, or seem too desperate to Eggman. He believes what he's saying here; as established he doesn't like the world as is. Again, win-win situation. He didn't "ditch his squad" he saw a way to protect them and be given power the world literally has never seen....
That's also why I really hate the weak jokes people make about him, after taking a risky move he couldn't avoid, his entire squad gets killed off, then he is immediately told to 'clean up the mess they made' and go fight THE GUY who killed them
Tumblr media
He literally says they're ANNIHILATED. Infinite does not get time to grapple with this at all before he's told
Tumblr media
That his squad was USELESS. His family was USELESS. And now he has to face the person who killed annihilated them, without a second to process; and then after being beaten by THE ULTIMATE LIFEFORM. Is instead, spared, called weak, then told to never show his face again. His breakdown wasn't "Wash shadow called me weak :(" his breakdown was, "my entire family was just killed by this guy and now he has the audacity to call me weak, and then he's upset because, to him, he IS being weak.
Tumblr media
He is THE ULTIMARE MERCENARY !!!! He did not expect the right to go the way it did, shadow literally teleported around him... with a title like that he had to be extremely skilled, and with the jumps he does in Episode Shadow right before the fight, I'm willing to believe that!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fear clearly isn't an emotion he's used to feeling, and with his family dead, and his pride crushed now, it stacked and led into his breakdown. The rest of Episode Shadow is literally him talking about how he 'threw away his old self', the one who couldn't hold his own, who couldn't save the people he cared about. And, with nothing left to care about; he continues on with the war plans.....
I started rambling I simply think it's unfair to say he 'ditched' his squad, and it's unfair to just call him weak for a haha funny because he literally. Isn't? And never was in any capacity. And when people reduce him down to just 'guy who hates being called weak' it really just ignores all the interesting tidbits he does have, and that forces DID get to show us... even with minimum digging he has a personality that reaches beyond how I see him often portrayed.... he is so cool and I love him so much thanks
(I don't feel like putting a DNI on this but be normal....... thanks....)

The why do I need to use English to explain
Thoughts about the friend group, auby for now
I OVERTHINK OK
Sometimes I think about Aubrey, she is a tricky character to talk about , and in this friend group I don’t want to argue more about her. I’m going to sounds very petty, I don’t judge her much i just want to list out how I feel.
Summary, because auby took the album but the plot give it back doesn’t means its ok
The action of Aubrey taking basil photo album
Aubrey apologized to the friend’s group for her awful behavior towards basil, of not knowing the whole picture, so in her mind, she is in the wrong bullying Basil, however I hardly felt the sincere apology towards basil because we don’t have the time , besides the possibility of after hospital she might re apologies, for four years, and for the audience we know basil wrong Aubrey but not Aubrey(the feeling of Aubrey action is justified, and basil let it happen is due to what basil done to mari, from my view). But see it in another way, in her perspective, she even admitted she didn’t understand basil that time but now acknowledges it, it was brief, very brief that she probably if not hero an older person she actually respected and heard, she would just brush off the action of taking basil photos album . I know everyone is coping with their way, when kel came, her first defense was is the friend group abandoned her. What I’m saying is, the photo album she knows how important it’s for basil, and vaguely understands the idea she is being unfair to Basil, all those FOUR years she still has this attitude of I have the right to not give, not even hear SUnny wishes out for the return oc the photo album (who should in everyone knowledge suffer the most) she kept the picture for herself ,yes, but also not even let Sunny to see the album and throw them). The throwing always photo album don't felt that bad because KEl , sunny get it baCK.(I want to point out how bad it will be if there is no photo album How bad dose it felt ,if not for the plot let the audience forget about that.) even if I put it lightly if she only ignores Basil, and does not do any other bullying, she still views, mari, the photo album as hers. There is a lot of part of the writing meaning her actions but cut up with other stuff because, we can't make the plot too uneasy for the morning part, understandable, but please don't just forget it. But I know she is 16 and very realistic actually, that is how real people act, and I like her writing even though everyone says it’s not enough. I like her flaws and kindness, but also annoying when people view her as only a cool bossy girl, but everything is has a reason and it ok. She is not rational. It’s cool how she acts, yes, and I believe she might not be this mean but act tough due to the hooligans is around , just wanted ppl to know she is pretty shitty too, but everyone ignored this because they just wanted all of them to be kind and all that friendship is smooth, magic.
As a basil defender, I’m so salty of how everyone treats basil to be honest, sunny, basil even kel I nitpicking the hell of it please don’t take me serious
I don't hate her I just felt her character is warped due to mainstream keeping it healthy, and we cannot say any touchy stuff, everything needs to be forgiven or completely not when I finished the game I had so much emotion, and I understood a lot of things the game didn't say out loud and ppl will understand, but man I felt like soooo much stuff people isn't acknowledging it, they are just straightly forgetting it exists , everyone is good person , and keep on shitting on basil, maby sunny

We have heard your gospel on the shitty finale. Now, dear prophet, I humbly ask for your fix-it ideas
OK SO
you said FIX IT... so how would i fix it. oh in so many ways. but to make what we had WORK, its simple. ive said it before and i will say it again. 3 simple things:
- having no way back to amphibia is treated by the characters as something unfair and theyre all very broken up about it, especially anne. she's inconsolable. shes not accepting just cuz omg i changed i will just take every bad thing life keeps throwing at me here throw some more
- we get to see anne reunite with her parents when shes back (sasha and marcy with theirs too would be nice but thats another can of worms to open)
- after the trio hug in the timeskip, have an actual open end where we see a light flash when they walk off screen. like they went... Somewhere 😳 thatd be cool, like have they opened it before? is this the first time? is it even a portal? dont know, actual open end ✌️
(people keep saying what we got was an open end and the more i think about it the more i call bs. it wasnt open ended they just didnt go back to amphibia and ur in denial. cry about it ig)
anyways id be so happy with an ending like that. im not even changing much its just adding 3 things.
(also id probably skip on the trio growing apart and shit. like i keep saying, i dont think them growing apart in the situation where amphibia is closed for good works out. its just weird. like yeah we close this chapter that totally didnt mark us for life and we move on 🤟 BUT AGAIN JUST LIKE SASHARCYS PARENTS, THATS ANOTHER CONVO)
AS FOR AN ACTUAL FIX IT... to make exactly what we got work we'd have to rewrite the whole thing. not make it about saving the world, not making it so much about family, changing everything. cuz that ending just shits on everything lmao if the ending we got actually worked then amphibia would have to be a completely different story
ANYWAY a fix it would be what i said. tbh i like it when u add those 3 things. its genuinely bittersweet like that. it makes me angry about how its only 3 simple little things that couldve been added and i wouldve been content. but whatever
HOWEVER, A DELUSIONAL ENDING THAT WOULD MAKE ME HAPPY WOULD BE: annes given 3 full stones, bc i dont see why tf not if she meets god. i mean if its gonna be nonsensical then lets be nonsensical all the way and have 3 stones. each of them get one, and they can use it to travel back and forth by themselves. each time they have to charge it.
this means they dont usually Go together. they go separately, and if theyre ever in amphibia at the same time they might not even know. sasha always warps at toad tower, anne in wartwood, marcy in newtopia. they go to amphibia for their own purposes and business. and thus the trio grows apart.
it makes more fucking sense, ofc i think the trio growing apart makes sense, it just Doesnt when you add it up with closing off amphibia forever lol. but with amphibia being accessible i totally see it. theyre all doing their own stuff and making their own friends (both human and amphibians). even like this, after what they went through, sasha anne and marcy are intertwined for life. no matter how much time passes, how different they become, theyre unique to each other. they always come back to each other at one point. other than that, amphibia is open, they get to grow up in a place they love with people they love without having to sacrifice choosing one or the other bc that Sucks Ass and they've been thru enough, and have enough mental scars that will keep haunting them even after if they get to thrive in both worlds
this version is kinda. unrealistic. i get it. but the realistic ending we got was bullshit and shitted on everything, its sad and not to mention Boring. i think this ver still gets the point across (point that was already made so many times in the show anyway), sprig and anne grow up together, anne still becomes a herpetologist but now instead of fucking tragic and sad its very fun and cute, sasha has a getaway from her chaotic homelife and can be with grime who never ever EVER left her side, marcy gets to become close to olivia like shes failed to do and hence gain an actual mother figure in her life, etc etc. hehe
(and as adults sasha and marcy choose to move to amphibia. or as teenagers they just straight up stay there. but thats another convo as well)
i actually do enjoy a version where they only go back after 10 years and they have to reconnect, its fun to explore, but it never stops being Sad. i think of it and make hcs about it and comics about it but it never stops being full on sad ending to me and when i remember its not just a fun concept im exploring, its the genuine ending we got that is supposed to be Good and Satisfying, i become enraged. i continue not to see the sweet in the bitter. i wish people would at least admit its full on a very sad ending instead of pretending it was something else (people who liked it say it makes them want to d1e or say "idk i just like sad endings" so u agree. u agree it is a sad ending where characters end up sad)
anyways. kind of a stupid ramble here. i love amphibia (kicks the ending on the throat)

The Arcade Games of 1980 #5: Missile Command
If you thought Pac-Man was a fluke and we weren't in the golden age of arcade games yet, hoo boy, think again. Atari may not have impressed me a lot in recent times, but they clap back in some STYLE here.
Don't let the black background fool you, this game is not quite set in space. It did confuse me at first since it looks like you're defending Mars colonies rather than the Earth, but no, the cities you protect were actually supposed to be ones located in California. Which does add a bit of intensity when you think about it.
That's how I would describe the game best: Intense. The game doesn't sugarcoat, being *very* in your face about losing if you don't nab a high score. As soon as you hit the 2x multiplier, missiles come flying at you from all angles and depending on your skill level, your game can be over in the span of 90 seconds. Doesn't mean it's unfair, just that it's faster paced that you may be used to at this point in time.
Which is good! The speed of rounds makes the game incredibly replayable and you don't have to stick around to the slow stages for nearly as long. Blowing stuff up is always a hoot, especially with the large explosions this game hands you. You can make things easier for yourself too, flipping a DIP Switch gives you a city in reserve. The further you get, the higher the multiplier and the more ridiculous your score becomes if you hang on for a bit longer.
I don't have a ton of fluff to ramble on about this time. This is an excellent time and well worth your quarters/purchase of an Atari compilation. Even if it's yet another shooter game- damn I can't escape them can I?
The Verdict
Graphics (8): 8-bit decency that looks perfect for the early Famicom/NES days. It gets especially cool when there's a lot going on, with all those explosion vortexes and whatnot. The game over screen knows how to spook an unassuming player- big letters that yell 'THE END' at ya while the background flashes red. May have given small children nightmares, fits with the cold war theming.
Sound (8): Oooh, punchy, I like it! A lot of the bleeps and detonation noises aren't new, but they were updated to sound less sharp on the ears in the former's case, and more realistic in the latter's. Once again, fits with the scenario you've found yourself in. Can't deny I adore the randomly generated glitchy jingle when you get an extra city, too. A controlled cacophony that I can't get enough of.
Fun Factor (9): Brilliantly chaotic and replayable. Rounds are snappy, the controls are accurate *enough* that I don't find myself too upset when I miss, and there's also the twinge of strategy involved as well- what enemy do you focus on and what sacrifices need to be made? One of the least flawed feeling games yet. 'Polished af', as my informal self would say.
Longevity (9): Cuz rounds are so short, you can argue that reaching the final new aspects (6x multiplier at the 11th screen, no more background color changes some time later) won't take as long as it would with Pac-Man, however you'd be surprised. If you don't get a bit lucky with how the missiles fly towards your cities in the middle stages and don't have super fast access to multitasking, you could be stuck on this one for a very very long time. And you still would wanna play it afterwards, as with the other classics of the era.
My own max was the 7th screen for reference, past the point of new mechanics but well short of truly expert play.
In Conclusion

Curious question, how many Sherlock Holmes adaptations have you watched? Also, if you watched several , which one is your favorite?
Well, setting aside the Great Mouse Detective because it's unfair to compare other adaptations to something I loved as a child and thus can only view with perfect adoration in spite of any actual truths.
I am a tumblr user of repute, so I've of course seen the BBC's Sherlock. I think that A Study in Pink is the best episode in the show because the editing and cinematography are outstanding and serve the story beautifully. The writing is mediocre but competently sets expectations for the quality of the rest of the show. Then the second episode is so shockingly racist. So overall, it's bad, but influential in fandom whether we want it to be or not. I enjoyed it at the time, but as a more... like. Informed adult? It's bad. Don't bother.
A Study in Emerald. Short story by Neil Gaiman. Barely constitutes an adaptation, but we deserve to be reminded of good writing after that last one. It's available for free on Mr Gaiman's website, here:
Apparently there's a graphic novel version of Emerald, but I've not read it. Unless the graphic novel is just the fake newspaper on the website? Wikipedia was somewhat unclear.
Downey Jr movies: I love them. Absolutely horrible adaptations, but fucking amazing films. More fun than you're expecting. Highly recommended.
Elementary: Probably the best modern adaptation. Captures the serial spirit and commitment to Solving Mysteries Realistically of the original. However, I cannot watch it. The lead actor's performance is basically perfect for 'what would the Holmes character be like today' but I cannot stand it for some reason. I haaaaate watching him, and that makes this one hard for me. I recommend it highly anyway.
I watched two of the Basil Rathbone films to the point of nausea as a kid, but over exposure to the Worst Kinds Of White People in high school discussions of his body of films left a bitter taste for me. Because these films were an adaptation for an audience MUCH closer to the audience of the original stories, there is a period and character authenticity that just cannot be matched by anything else. Honestly, if you only ever watch one adaptation, it should be one of these. I say that in spite of these movies attracting the worst people on earth. There's a reason the 'generic' image of Holmes looks that way, and it's Basil Rathbone.
I've only seen the Peter Cushing movie, not the show. But, he's very much the performance I imagine in my head when reading the stories these days. My favourite live action Holmes actor, and a really top tier Watson. Definitely worth the time. I'm told the show is, um. Not so good on the Watson front.
I didn't like The Private Life of Holmes. I thought it sucked. I have no redeeming statements for it. It's objectively better that the 2010 BBC show, but I have nostalgia for that one's fandom. I just hate this one. It's bad!! Watch anything else. Watch the Great Mouse Detective, it has the same plot but it doesn't suck.
Young Sherlock Holmes is also a bad movie, but it's a bad Pixar Kids Movie so it's still perfectly competent for what it wants to be. If you need something to give a Holmes loving kid under 12 has 'seen them all' give them this. It's forgettable, and thus kids never really see it anymore.
I haven't seen Enola Holmes yet, but I'll probably get around to it. So I guess that's a tentative recommendation there.
The BBC radio drama Adventures of Holmes and its sequel Further Adventures of Holmes is REALLY FUCKING GOOD. If you like podcasts or audio books or stage plays, you have GOT to try these. The first half is a complete adaptation of every Holmes story, and the second half is professional fanfic of identical quality. I've never tried the American version and don't intend to.
I liked the 3 VHS tapes of the Granada tv series that I watched as a little kid, but I honestly couldn't tell you if they're good. I haven't watched any of it since I turned 9. A lot of people like them to the point of thinking Jeremy Brett is THE Holmes actor, so they had to be doing something right.
Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century and Case Closed are both like... impossible for me to parse as Holmes adaptations. Wikipedia says they are but like........ okay. I've seen them both and they are their own entities to me lol. Case Closed in particular is bomb as hell, highly recommended. But like... in a retro anime way, not a Holmes way.
Miss Sherlock has been good so far. I haven't watched enough to have a strong opinion beyond, like. Gay shit. As a Known Fagotte, I gotta say. They sure did cast very attractive actresses and leave all the homoeroticism in place. This, reasonably IMO, distracts me from having anything valuable to say.
The Star Trek TNG episodes with Data and Moriarty are obviously personal favourites. If you can suspend your disbelief enough to accept the god like powers of the holodeck, I think it's a really good time.
And the only one I can remember that wasn't on the Wikipedia list of adaptations is Slylock Fox. These are riddle comics for very young kids, like, ages 3-7. They're to help early readers learn new vocabulary and practice critical thinking. They were my very, very first Holmes media.
I. Hated. Those. Goddamn. Comics. I wanted to kill them. Not the characters or the author, but the comics themselves as a concept. I NEVER solved ANY of the fucking riddles, and to this DAY I will NEVER FORGET that latex paint dyes water and oil paint doesn't.
Tumblr media
Probably good for kids who get bored in class a lot, but be ready for the rage.

i mentioned earlier i think riza's friendship with rebecca isn't as positive and close as a lot of the fandom makes it out to be. i want to expand more on that because i think it's very interesting and a pretty realistic depiction of what a lot of adult friendships can look like.
just as a recap for those who don't know who rebecca is (hi crossover mutuals), she's a lieutenant like riza though she's a lower rank which implies she joined the military after riza and was probably not part of the war, this is contextually relevant because it adds to the ways in which they don't fully relate to each other.
rebecca is extroverted, she's flirty and quick witted. she is dependable and knows what's up. she's cool, she's probably pretty popular, but she's also just starkly different to riza. who is quiet, introverted and has chronic resting bitch face.
i don't think she's a bad person or mean spirited. she's certainly flawed, but so is riza. i don't think the lack of closeness between her and riza happens as result of something being wrong with her or that being some kind of moral failure on her behalf.
however rebecca does things that can be perceived as hurtful. for instance she spends years moaning about how she's looking for a man to settle down with who can support her so she can quit the military to riza while knowing riza can never even hold hands with the person she loves in public (i mean things change, but for a solid 10 years that was her reality). we canonically see rebecca tell riza to her face that she thinks riza is having sex with superior officers just to get "promoted" (even though riza was actually being held hostage by bradley rip).
of course this is framed as a joke and joking between friends is all good but there's obviously a layer of genuine jealousy and perceived unfairness. we can only imagine what kind of comments she would make when riza is able to get married, or when she finds out she's related to grumman. and i don't even necessarily think rebecca would be entirely wrong, not because riza specifically is getting anything unfairly but because her circumstances suck. having to join the military or take any other shitty job to survive sucks. not being able to find a good partner when you long for that kind of relationship sucks. she's not wrong to feel some type of way about that, but none of that is riza's fault and riza has gone through so much trauma and hardship it's not fair to make her feel bad when things don't go wrong for once for her.
i think in a lot of ways rebecca is kind of like jessica stanley from twilight (no, i'm serious). a little vain and jealous but not necessarily wrong in what they want and never truly mean spirited. but because riza is such a polar opposite personality wise even when she doesn't take rebecca's comments to heart there's still an emotional distance between the two.
granted, riza also struggles somewhat with getting close to people. she's very empathetic but still feels a level of disconnection from society mostly because of how she was raised and partly because she's a war veteran. but point is, she often feels very alien. rebecca's quips and generally loud personality inherently puts a space between them preventing riza from feeling close to her. it's no one's fault, no one is the antagonist or in the wrong. it's just a compatibility thing.
if asked, riza would confirm rebecca is her friend. would call her a good friend even. but she would never describe her as her "best friend" or "soul sister" or anything along those lines.

You don’t have to post or anything but the posts you posted/deleted on Sunday after Taylor’s aoty win as well as some you’ve reblogged were in bad taste. I hope you understand that people have valid criticism of Taylor both in the results of the Grammys as well the capitalistic side effects of her lifestyle. Not saying you don’t have the right to love her and her music! But you acted dismissive of others, especially women of color, who voiced their valid critiques of the woman’s wins and actions. You writing their opinion off as just being “haters”  was wrong. Your words came across petty and distasteful. I hope you understand the inherit bias the media/industry has for Taylor versus her contemporaries. Some of us are tired of seeing only her be rewarded for things many others (especially other women/woc) have tirelessly worked on and accomplished. This corner of tumblr has so many diverse voices and your posts (to me) wrote their perspective/commentary off completely. Frankly that just seems mean to me.
If Taylor fans can’t handle any valid criticism of her then it may be time to reflect on your relationship to her. These past few days have been so jarring on here! If you can’t take a step back and acknowledge that you’ve completely disregarded valid critique of that woman you’re going to continue to lose connections/followers on here by writing others voices off. I realize that I’m not Taylor’s target audience as a poc so I do tend to critique her as an outsider. But it was lowkey hurtful to see her fans write off our voices/opinions. Not trying to police what you say/do on here bc it’s your blog but maybe don’t be petty or rude because it didn’t paint you (or the other swifties in this corner of tumblr) in the best light. Realistically these small things don’t matter in the grand scheme of everything but it’s been on my mind the past few days. Idk it changed the way I view your blog and how you interact with the poc voices present here. I hope you continue to be open and understanding next time. :/
I accept criticism and I get not liking someone but you have to understand that when you keep reading over time nasty things about someone you are a fan of it gets tiring, specially when some people write it in a way that translates to the people who enjoy her music, basically implying that we are basic or white supremacists because we enjoy it and honestly I shut up a lot of times but you get fed up at one point, I am the first one to criticise people I am a fan of but acting like she is a terrorist and wanting me to stay cool reading that it’s a bit too much, my main Taylor fandom is not even in this corner but on twitter, as I am here mainly for TZ. Also when you mention the capitalist sideffects of her lifestyle, do you really think she is the only one that is doing that? Seems kinda hypocrite to me because every single millionare has that, you gotta be aware that all these HW people are capitalists.
Also I think that a lot of people deserve awards and recognition as much as she does (to me its crazy that Beyonce has not win AOTY) but to completely discredit her ? You can be frustrated and talk about all those conversations about woc having to work harder and that’s completely normal and valid but not to act like she is completely undeserving.
Lastly honestly you are judging me by calling me rude and mean and you don’t know me at all, you don’t know how I am in real life so making all those judgements based on a moment of lashing cause I was fed up seems unfair to me, I actually deleted it cause maybe some comments were taken the wrong way and I did not want to bring drama here and not make it weird for my tz mutuals I have here out of respect. Anyways this is the last thing I’ll say about this, I want to protect my peace of mind and this for me is about fun so yeah not dwelling on negative discourse.

Last Monday of the Week 2022-11-14
Recovering from a frustrating but otherwise uneventful encounter with The Virus. Had to skip a baking lesson, disastrous.
Listening: Tricot keeping me company through working and leisure, here's. My iPod can't display kanji yet so I'll need to Shazam this to find the song. Alright hang on.
<ten minutes pass>
okay what the hell. The original of this song is from a rhythm game called "Pop'n'Music 15 ADVENTURE", the tricot cover original recording is completely fucking impossible to track down online because it was only on one limited edition EP back when Tricot were just getting started. I have this because the Russian music piracy sites work harder than god, I guess. It's a cover of Rin to shite saku hana no gotoku. You might know it from DDR? This keeps happening. Anyway it kicks ass, this seems to be the same version I have.
youtube
Reading: SPQR, which is a lot of fun despite having a hard time keeping all the goddamn Tullius's and Quintus's straight in my head, I like it when a history book is realistic about how little we know about the past.
Mary Beard's approach of constantly reminding you that there's like a dozen different interpretations of any given piece of information helps keep you grounded and move focus to the big picture rather than agonizing over details.
Watching: Got through the entirety of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners during the power outage. It's a good Cyberpunk show, appropriately bloody and violent. Replicates the vibe that Cyberpunk encourages, where characters just get got because they were sloppy once. Megacorps are unassailable, not even a runner team at the top of their game could hope to do much more than temporarily inconvenience one.
I would probably be more positive but unfortunately for the next few months all shows are going up against Arcane as a point of comparison and that's just unfair.
Playing: Knocked out the Clockwork Mansion in Dishonored 2, although while I was busy rearranging the lab to zap Jindosh the power cut so I just have to finish up with that at some point.
The Clockwork Mansion is so cool, fantastic Dishonored level. The Clockwork soldiers are not that hard to kill if you're smart about it but they're still a massive pain in the ass, fun to fight. My first run through any Dishonored game is maximum chaos so that I can see a lot of the level, the empress's heart is very mad at me.
Making: Penrose Quilt, mostly just cutting more patches for it more than sewing because my eyes hurt from The Virus.
Tools and Equipment: A phone with an IR Blaster is a shockingly handy tool, easily turn off random TVs and radios without having to scramble around for a remote, if one even exists.

Eey! That's it, I'm nipping this shit off the bud.
The ideas of hard work vs natural talent have no true meaning in Naruto, because the narrative constantly flip flops the definition of the concept in order to pit characters who should be looking at the corrupt system that promotes such ideals.
Sasuke is not a genius and Neji is not a genius the same way Shikamaru is not considered a genius.
They worked hard for their shit, ok?
It's just that everyone else is just that stupid (naruto) and incompetent (naruto, and also like sakura and team guy when they graduated 100%) in comparison, so their comparatively adequate competences in magic warrior bullshit stands out. Kakashi doesn't know what planet he's on, so he can't speak, Naruto and Lee both have inferiority complexes bigger than them and Neji is a literal child slave who has had to conform to standards no matter what at some point in his life, their word is invalid.
Sasuke probably had nothing else to do but train alone, so in a realistic setting he would have a bunch of incorrect habits- and a bunch of stuff he doesn't know about, and Neji.... He's a slave in a military dictatorship, if feel like the branch family had to git gud or else.
Lee and Naruto's delusions that their skill is just natural is nothing more than propaganda. Nobody is at fault that Lee can't control chakra and nobody is at fault (actually yes, the entire village owes him reparations, but oh well) that Naruto wasted his academy years in property damage.
So, in reality the conflict should be of man against the system, right?
All four of them have been used, abused, and abandoned by the system that was supposed to protect them (even feudalism was on top of that shit lol), so, normally, they would work together against the state. But the states is clever and composed of trained sociopaths that know how to do crazy shit to keep the populace tame and their soldiers well under control.
So it is man vs man then. The system? Oh no, it works perfectly, the system rewards skill. Don't you think it's unfair that some people get more skill at birth than you? Look at this genocide victim and this slave, they have special eyes that give them more skillpoints than your normal eyes, and you are but poor war orphans and disabled children, how can you compete aginst the genocide victim and the slave?
You see where this is going?
When compared by the gifted children examples (Kakashi and Itachi, who, btw, ended with burnout and just destroyed psychologically) Neji and Sasuke are doing ok. Just ok. Like the average. Talented, with potential and good trajectory. Adequate progress. You know? Sasuke unlocked his sharingan and that seemed to help, but the fight between him and Lee would have ended the same if he hadn't because Lee has more experience and training on him (again Sasuke is half self-taught if we count the academy. Kakashi doesn't get credit). The delusion is so strong that Lee doesn't think that his considerable ammount of training and experience counts when compared to Sasuke's... being born into the Uchiha idfk, his beef was with Neji anyways so meh. Public humiliation and unprompted violence are cool ig, like in the american movies, except... Lee is the bully... huh.
Even Sasuke post-Orochimaru got where he was because he worked his ass off. The cursed seal is nothing but a cheap gimmick compared to the weapons, theory, nijutsu, taijutsu and genjutsu training Sasuke had undergone. That's hard work omg. He didn't snap his finger and he suddenly knew how to use a chokutou, the theory didn't come to him in a dream (unlike Naruto, whose Nine tails thing come to him in a vision, which is differen than a dream), he experimented and probably got his eyebrows burnt off while making new chidori moves like everyone else. No, the Sharingan doesn't work like that- he knew his shit- it wasn't just copypaste.

Ok, due to popular demand (from a single person, my friend @sweet-sirin, who, trust me, is very very popular) I am going to rank all the beautiful ladies in THIS post right here: https://val-of-the-north.tumblr.com/post/686489979549089792/cannibalbutcher-women-in-soulsborne-somehow-a
OK LET’S BEGIN
Unnamed Meat Cleaver Lady - 7/10
She was the first of the ladies, but sadly she doesn’t have much importance overall. Not that the others do, mind you, but at least they have a name! It’s also possible that she uses some other character’s face model, though I am not too sure. However, she has trendsetter privileges since this amazing tradition started with her. Your services have to be aknowledged... and besides, she weilds a boss weapon! That has to amount to something after all!
Maneater Mildred - 8.5/10
How can you NOT love her? She is the one most people encountered first since Dark Souls is the game that blew up in popularity, and she had a NAME! And a scripted invasion to boot! Very memorable if you didn’t expect it (Like me!) Best of all though? if you prove yourself she’ll straight-up fight for you! And she is a damn good summon for Quelaag with how tanky she is (I would like it if you didn’t just run into the molten lava sometimes-) I will say that her face doesn’t really scream “maneater” but she is still really pretty despite this (besides, it’s probably because of the character creator in Dark Souls, can’t be too harsh). And she is chubby, so she is literally perfect.
Melinda the Butcher - 7.5/10
Overall a downgrade from Mildred herself, as she is not chubby and uses the face model of other characters. Dark Souls 2 does this for a lot of NPCs sadly. But she is still a badass that lives in the shittiest place in the land. You gotta give her some credit for that. And much like Mildred, she even comes to aid you for a later fight! A fight that’s sooooo far away from her home, meaning she came all the way here to help you if you defeated her previously. And it’s against an ancient freaking dragon (of dubious origin, but still a big fuck with a big healthpool) and her tankiness can really help. She might not be as thicc as Mildred, but she is just as strong. She is still worthy of respect. And she uses an axe instead of a cleaver! Unique weapon choices are really welcomed. Sadly though, I can’t get her any higher due to Dark Souls 2 “rough around the edges” nature. Truly nerfed by her own game...
Isabella the Mad - 8/10
NOW THIS! This is the face of someone that would actually realistically kill me and eat my remains. They finally got it right with her! But I suppose they didn’t really need to get it right with the others since you weren’t really meant to see their face, but still! Isabella is cool, she is just a pure big woman with a big cleaver. And she is also chubby, thanks the stars! It just completes the whole thing, especially when they are basically half-naked. Got a funny hat tho! The presentation is just splendid, but that’s sadly about it for Isabella. She doesn’t have much relevance and unlike the other two before her, she doesn’t come to help you with a boss fight later. It’s honestly a big shame, I would have liked to see more of her, but alas, she might not enjoy losing. I still very much enjoy her, I think she looks the best visually of the Dark Souls butcher ladies. Her expression really fits her title of “the Mad”, and her vibes are on-point if you ask me.
Anastasia, Tarnished-Eater - 9/10
What can I say except WOW. They did not need to make Anastasia THIS stunning yet they did. Her eyes are really captivating and her hair looks beautiful! While not big, she looks good this way too since she is wearing a full robe as opposed to rags that keep all of her skin exposed. Her face also has a very weird texture... such a mesmerizing sight. Sadly I can’t really count her character model fully because it would be unfair to the other ladies. They weren’t as lucky as she was, especially Melinda and Miss Meat Cleaver, so she can’t get too many extra points. She is also unique in reagards to the other cannibal women in the list because we can actually speculate on her lore more! From her clothes, she looks to have been a Finger Maiden. Perhaps one that lost her mind/went rogue? Or maybe she tricks the Tarnished into thinking she is a Finger Maiden to then kill and eat them when they least expect it. Either way, room for speculation!!! And of course, unlike the others she is REALLY persistent! You won’t be getting rid of her by defeating her only once. This woman knows what she wants and she WILL have it. You can really respect the dedication. Sadly she doesn’t help for any bossfight, but I think her resolve to eat the person who keeps beating her ass makes up for it.
And here we are, all the murder ladies done. I don’t feel like any of them deserve to go lower, they are all great.

Unfair Squid Abuse Pre Movie Part 3
Observations of S1: https://www.tumblr.com/kinopioa/720614514310201344/squid-abuse-in-pre-movie-spongebob?source=share
Observations of S2: https://www.tumblr.com/kinopioa/721449813793734656/unfair-squid-abuse-pre-movie-part-2?source=share
This post will cover S3 Unfair Squid Abuse. Note I said unfair, as situations that are heavily pushed on by him are that karmic enough to warrant it don't count as "unfair". Minor sass and scoffing is NOT a good enough reason for extreme violence or psychological abuse
S3 Ep2A: Club Spongebob;
Squidward's on his way to work, but then is soon jeered at by Spongebob and Patrick in their clubhouse. He gets fed up about it, so he goes to prove he's cool, only to find that the duo were trapped in the clubhouse, now Squidward being another victim. You'd think they'd ask for help instead of immediately jeering, but whatever
Squidward doesn't take this and reaches over for the vine to get out, but the vine snaps then vaults them into the forest. He panics at first, until SB brings out the conch, then he and Patrick start their Magic 8 Ball bs
From here Squidward no longer cares about them, ditching them to try to find a way out, but fails. So for the next few weeks Squidward has made a fire and been eating bugs. Note that while he mocks SB and Patrick, nor wants to share what little food he had, SB and Pat were literally doing nothing to help. The situation escalates when a plane drops loads of food near SB and Pat, and the two gorge on it. Squidward then begs for food while still denying the conch, but the Sponge won't let him until he accepts it. Despite that, the conch keeps saying no to all his requests, leaving Squidward to still starve. He then starts having a mental breakdown, until a park ranger comes by. Unfortunately he too has a conch, and all proceed to do nothing, now Squidward is mentally shot
Abuse Gauge: Near cult gaslighting
____
S3 Ep2B: My Pretty Seahorse;
Surprisingly despite him not being a major part of the ep, Squidward is blighted. First is in the beginning where the flowers spontaneously hiss at him, then later where he spontaneously explodes after randomly tripping
Interestingly, he notes how karma screws him over generally
Abuse Gauge: Nature is wild
____
S3 Ep4B: Idiot Box;
After pointing out that SB wasted money ordering a TV to just get the box (so SB never checks the dump, or recycling center?), he asks SB if he can take the TV. The Sponge agrees, and Squidward happily takes the CRT inside, then realizing he left the remote outside. When he comes back he hears SB and Patrick loudly playing in the box. Annoyed by the noise, he kicks the box, only to suddenly hear an avalanche and anguish. He feels guilty and opens it to see the damage, but finds SB and Pat just sitting there. He starts questioning the two, but as SB insists that it's just their imagination, despite Squidward, someone that's a stick in the mud, not having much of.
Annoyed, the grumpy octopus goes back inside to prove he has an imagination, only to fail. More of SB and Pat's realistic noises pop up, and Squidward starts losing sight of reality, getting fed up to just go back qnd watch TV, but all channels remind him of the box. He once again checks the two to see if there's a recording device (oddly, Patrick has a box for a recorder), only to get nothing. He frantically tries to rationalize how SB and Pat make those noises, not realizing that Derek Drymon and Hillenburg have had him as the buttmonkey since 1997. He decides to sneak into the box when the two go to sleep for the night, whoch takes hours, then sneaks in. He at first isn't having luck, until a garbage truck engine rrrs, making him think he's driving a race car, only for it to take the box and throw him into the dump
Abuse Gauge: Imagine being a buttmonkey
____
S3 Ep5A: Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV;
When Spongebob gets the belt, he messes around instead of doing his job in the Krusty Krab. Squidward gets spooked by one of the belt blasts and spills a shake, leading to him getting punched by a customer. He goes in the kitchen to find SB shrinking Krustu Krab supplies to enact a mini restaurant, then notices the belt. He then goes to tattle on SB (taking joy of SB's panic, though given the punch from earlier...), but SB immediately shrinks him. Squidward demands to be returned to normal, but SB doesn't know what to do. He ends up spawning extra eyes on Squidward, burning him, deforming his nose, making him skinless, cutting him in half, along with 8 other horrible off screen sessions. Squidward begs him to ask Mermaid Man for help, but Spongebob is too scared to let him, so he kidnaps Squidward and goes to Patrick. Pat thinks mini Squidward is a toy, and immediately starts playing with him, even smashing him up to a pickle for romance (Pat ships pickles apparently). While Squidward contemplates suicide, SB ends up shrinking Pat. SB gets more paranoid, shrinking anyone that speaks to him, and he ends up stuffing and overcrowding them in a jar. And then the rest they break out the jar, climb all over SB and hit him, then SB shrinks the town and himself
Abuse Gauge: Wumbo Combo'd
____
S3 Ep9A: Krab Borg;
To sum it up, throughout the ep Spongebob, due to watching scary movies, thinks that robots are taking over. His fear mongering affects even Squidward, and the two capture Mr. Krabs due to thinking he's a robot after an accident with salt (wait, isn't the ocean...?). Squidward wants to begin interrogation, though SB is too quick to the trigger in slapping the crab before questions were asked. Getting nothing after the interrogation, They settle to break Mr. Krabs' appliances until he cracks. Squidward, now suspicious of Mr. Krabs actually showing emotion, asks SB how he what happened in the rest of the movie. SB starts to recount the movie he saw last night, realizing that even there the robots were just mass hysteria. He then immediately runs out, leaving Squidward to take full blame of the events that transpired
Legit, just dipped from responsibility
Abuse Gauge: Krab fury
____
S3 Ep10B: Krusty Krab Training Video;
The entire video takes a potshot on Squidward, even leaking his actual name. Squidward even mentions that this is all forcibly overtime
Abuse Gauge: Unpaid humility
____
S3 Ep11A: Party Pooper Pants;
To get Squidward to come to his party, SB sabotages his cable
Ironically it is SB that suffers way more for his actions this ep
Abuse: Minor televised annoyance
____
S3 Ep13B: Clams;
Due to Mr. Krabs senile delusions of knowing specifically what his millionth earned dollar is, Squidward and Spongebob are "rewarded" by going on a fishing clamming trip. Spongebob already screws up by snagging on his chair, shirt, even his nose, making Squidward with a ripped off nose want to leave. However SB ends up snaring Mr. Krabs' millionth dollar, which then is eaten by the giant clam, so now the crew are forced to stay to get it back for the next few days. Things go further south with Mr. Krabs threatening starvation, which prompts Squidward and Spongebob to escape. Unfortunately Mr. Krabs expected this, and so uses the two as live bait to get the giant clam
Abuse Gauge: Fish hook through the nose
____
S3 Ep17B: Camping Episode;
Squidward, anticipating for peace and quiet for once cuz Spongebob and Patrick have a camping trip, is disappointed to find that they just camp in their front yard. He questions the two on why they aren't legitimately in the wild, but SB is adament about this being "wild enough". He tells Squidward good night, but Squidward gets psyched into thinking he's calling him weak (whoops, there goes squiddy's ego), so he insists on camping with SB and Pat. After failure in setting up his tent, having hot food drenched on him, and an annoying Song, Squidward learns of the Sea Bear myth. He denies it, (especially since he's 10ft in front of his house anyway so why would there be wild animals on his lawn), even dances in a hot just to prove a point, but Jay Lender says otherwise, so a Sea Bear mauls him for a good few minutes. The ep ends with a Sea Rhino ominously nearby about to attack Squidward
Abuse Gauge: Wild Jay Lender attack
____
S3 Ep18B: Plankton's Army;
Generally missed, but Squidward was stuffed into the toilet under Mr. Krabs
Abuse Gauge: Being an unofficial member of the TMNT
____
S3 Ep20B: Pranks A Lot;
Much like most of Bikini Bottom, Squidward is spooked into thinking there are ghosts, which causes a hole in his wall as he runs out
Abuse Gauge: Mild cowardly exit
____
Welp, that's the 3 seasons
Notes;
-For all 3 pre movie seasons, it seems that anytime he wants to do what Spongebob/Patrick are doing, he gets punished for it. Guess the moral is to never do anything new, cuz it'll bite. How depressing
-Despite "Camping Episode", S1's "Jellyfishing" still has the most severe Squid Abuse for the first 3 seasons
-S3 introduces Squidward napping at work. "Krusty Krab Training Video" pokes fun at this newfound development
-Spongebob being a karma houdini starts developing this season
-There are more eps this season of Spongebob being blighted alongside Squidward
This research has been a waste of time for me, but here's your truth. Squid Abuse happened prior to S4
Does this mean the episodes are bad? No (well Pranks A Lot is boring). They're generally funny or entertaining
But saying "pre movie of Squidward suffering was all about karma" is incredibly false. Pyrric victories are too little or not even there!

My OTP SHIPS!
Is it OTPs if it is more than one or just favorite ships?
These pairings beat the odds and stand the test of time. They genuinely choose to love every day, even if it’s the least easy path. None of them expect to fall in love. Most go through (figurative with some literal) hell and heaven and back for each other.
1. Melinda Gordon & Jim Clancy
They are the most healthy and realistic TV couple I’ve ever witnessed. Truly my place of realistic bliss! Simple but just as effective.
Tumblr media
2. Jamie & Claire Fraser
These two individuals are true equals in every sense of the word - independent heroes. They don't depend on each other to be strong individually, but they choose to be together which makes them even stronger. I appreciate how they believe in and respect each other immensely, even through the toughest of times. Admittedly, the show's time-travel and heroics were unrealistic for our current times. However, what I found truly beautiful was the way these two characters loved each other. It was a healthy, supportive love that one might find in a strong marriage. They both faced different kinds of emotional and mental trauma, but they were always there for one another, holding each other up during the darkest times until they each found their way back to themselves. Seeing this kind of love portrayed on screen was truly special and rare.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. James Valdez & Teresa Mendoza
Peter Gadiot and his heart eyes can handle things independently, but when he's with Teresa, it's a tremendous slow burn! SBs are my ultimate weakness. I'm here for the adventure, but even if you remove the thrilling and dangerous cartel aspect for a moment, you still have two relatable characters. I love that this show ensures realistic responses to traumas and surroundings. The incredibly attentive and gentle connection that develops between them is convincing. It grows into something undeniable and irreplaceable. It's a story of two people who suppressed love and let their cool, traumatized shells guide them for far too long. Luckily, they eventually managed to express their emotions and made it. This love is built on mutual trust, loyalty, and intelligence.

OK, who’s going to admit that they at some point loved the idea of forbidden scandalous fruit which must be kept a secret?! The chemistry! The high stakes! The epic drama of it all! These two are so soft and yet on fire at all times. Cons: it's not that realistic, and it’s a very unhealthy coupling.

5. Bonnie & Damon
The laughter! The unexpected pure friendship! Yes, this ship was categorized as platonic, but it wasn’t if you listened to Kat and Ian’s interviews. They explain it well if it’s not apparent enough on screen. If you’ve read the books, you know romance was initially part of their story. I only watched the show but believe these two characters are fun/nier and a healthier match than Delena ever was. Also, Ian Somerhalder wouldn’t have continued in the show without Kat Graham’s Bonnie Bennett! Honestly, none of the characters would live to season 8 without Kat’s character. Bonnie was an ideal character all on her own from the start, even before she knew her true power, but (as unfair and racist as it was/is) Kat Graham only got more screen time because of Bamon. In contrast, Damon’s character arc to becoming his best self was primarily because of her. I digress. I love Ian and Kat. The growth of these two characters over TVD’s eight seasons is tremendous. I just love the history, the quick wit, the “can’t bulshit me” soft magic between them.

6. Elena Gilbert & Damon Salvatore (Delena)
Who doesn’t like to indulge in a cliche love triangle when it manages to be this epic?! Drama drama drama, and yet this pair is SO GOOD! I’m a bit biased. Cons: Not realistic and mostly unhealthy

7. Vivienne Surefire & Sunny Sweeney (🍒☀️)
Fic otp! Aerial - Another unexpected slow burn! A story about having to often get things very wrong before getting them right. These characters don’t start romantically brushing elbows until the 27th chapter or so. It’s full of angst, and soft, loved-up, ethereal molten hot feelings, with a picturesque setting throughout! Pros: poetically written - almost every line is a pretty and moving description. Cons: a little too idealistic for reality

8. Bonus:
Click to each the video of these two jaguars in love! Jaguars are my favorite big cat, and I resonate with their spiritual symbolism. Unfortunately all animals in sanctuaries are endangered species. Luckily, these cats are respected and get all that they need. Jaguars are naturally solitary creatures. Yet look at my favorite Jaguar couple, defying it all, loving, purely to love. Meet Neron & Kiera - a real-life jaguar couple who live at the big cat sanctuary in England. Neron is the melanistic male, and Kiera is the tan female. They had a cub a year ago and may have another later. They are so tender with each other. I love how their personalities are opposites, but they love each other anyway.
Many tv series and books are not realistic but I like that my favorite pairs have some realism and remind me/taught me a few things about healthy, enduring love. Ultimately, I must respect myself and enjoy my life and know myself as much as I respect others to get the most out of life.
