Heya, just hoping that you've been doing better since your unexpected ER visit a few days ago. Did everything turn out okay? Able to get appts with specialists, I hope?

Ugh, this has been the worst week of my damn life, I swear. My heart is apparently wanting to set a land speed record and no one can figure out why. And for some reason the cardiologist I was referred to doesn’t think my heart rate of 168 bpm is a cardiac issue??? And doesn’t want me to come in??? And the ER ran a whole battery of tests on me and everything came back clean, which is good but also frustrating because it doesn’t make any goddamn sense that I’m apparently perfectly healthy except for my heart being wired to explode any moment.

But my pcp talked to the cardiologist directly and I’m going in next week to get a holter monitor for a few days, and my pcp has also switched up a bunch of my meds and I’ve only been on them for 24 hours but they seem to be working better than the old combo.

So fuck. I don’t really know how I’m doing tbh, but I’m still alive? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Living that “fuck it we ball” life rn while the care team throws spaghetti at the wall.

As a supporter of Daniel and as a doctor, I'm gonna break this down for you guys

He broke his metacarpal. Not his wrist.

The metacarpals are the five long bones in your palm, an example of which has K wires as shown here:

2. I don't know which metacarpal he broke or how he broke it. The site, severity, and displacement of the break will all determine how best to handle it. But usually, there are two choices Daniel and the team can make.

Option A: he could opt for a closed reduction and EXTERNAL fixation, or CREF for short, which involves straightening the bone without any operation and securing the break with a splint. In this scenario he would be out of commission for at least 6-8 weeks while the fracture heals completely.

Option B: If he opted (or if it is necessary because the fracture is comminuted) for closed reduction and INTERNAL fixation (CRIF) with K wires (seen in the xray example above) which would go through the back of his hand and into the bone to hold it in place while it heals, this would negate the need for a splint and mobilisation of the hand could start immediately.

HOWEVER, it is important to note that mobilisation DOES NOT equal driving an F1 car.

As we saw with Lance over the summer, he had an operation immediately. This meant he didn't need to have a cast as the bone was fixed internally and not externally. However he still needed a solid week and a half of physio to be deemed fit to drive.

I don't know how bad Daniel's break is. Even if it was necessary or he was given the option for K wire fixation, the last thing anyone would want would be for him to be pushed to drive too early and for the break not to heal properly/there to be other complications.

TLDR: If he is given the option to splint and he chooses that, he's out for 6-8 weeks. If he choses to K wire, he may return sooner (even arguably next week in Monza) but he would need an orthopaedic doctor to SERIOUSLY commit that the K wire fixation will stand up to the stresses of driving an F1 car.

Also, just as an overall observation, I really can't help but wonder how much better things might be if we actually tried to teach kids about the complexities of the world, rather than "Protecting Them."

by this point, my frustration is justified--if i have:

1) already mentioned in multiple replies that a fic is on hiatus

2) bolded its status and my reasons in the end note

3) added the status and a warning that i will delete comments of the type in my summary

why do i still get asked whether or not i'll ever update again? and that's all they have to say?

becoming increasingly concerned there's a subset of bil readers that don't know how to read or pay attention in a hobby that requires reading comprehension and an attention span

weee finally caught up on feh plot stuff

man, alfonse really isn't doing so hot is he. he's a clever little bastard, and i can respect the smooth manipulation and the ice-cold ruthlessness of his overall war strategy. but my guy you really gotta cut out the recklessness. if you get killed everything falls apart, man, my kiran doesn't know shit about running a country.

my biggest issue with feh's writing has for a while been the sheer amount of things that happen off-screen, and the amount of wasted space in chapters, and that... has not changed with this latest book. plot-relevant conversations still only ever happen in maps 1 and 5 of each chapter, and they mention so much stuff that happens in between these moments, but i never feel like an active participant in this story. another cutscene or two in between to flesh out the scenarios we're supposedly playing through would go such a long way! i don't know why we never get any of those!

still, i'm at least moderately curious to see where this all goes. if only to find out what the hell we're doing about alfonse's rapidly declining mental health.

I was watching the Meghan & Harry documentary on netflix, and it got me thinking about a supercorp version of a modern royalty au where Lena is the adopted princess of the royal family, whos been scrutinized by the media (and paparazzi) every day of her life since age 4. Kara of course would be be layman.

They meet thru a mutual friend (Sam Arias? Andrea Rojas? Idk), and Kara is a little sus at first, because Lena seems incredibly superficial/vain (bc she's stiff and cordial and always checking herself in mirrors and putting herself together and giving obviously fake smiles to people).

After a few dates Kara calls her out on it. Lena's shocked by the question, and says so.

"Nobody has ever asked me that before."

They just left with their assumptions intact, never seeing or asking more from Lena. And Lena always let them go.

Kara leans forward across the table, a warm smile on her lips.

"Well then, Lena... now that I've asked-- what do you want to show me?"

At which point Lena blossoms. She gives voice to her love of science and history, her desire for change, her special interests (of which there are many, each nerdier than the last). She always expresses regret for the scandals she's had-- drugs and raucous parties and racy relationships. She shares with Kara how lost she felt, swallowed up by a system that values the institution over the individual-- with a family who didn't seem to care for her.

At least it's always seemed like that to her, against her memories of a warm and affectionate mother. Compared to that, the stiff upper lips and formality even among her nuclear family seems ice cold.

Kara can see how Lena would struggle, having seen for herself how warm Lena is, beneath her frosty exterior-- a chill that likely seeped in from proximity to the crown. Because with Kara, Lena is all cuddles and smiles, soft sweaters and bright eyes.

They keep their relationship secret for the most part, only really letting Kara's friends and family in on it (Lena doesn't really have anyone she trusts enough to tell, except maybe Jack). When Lena meets them in small doses, they also think her too stiff and cordial, but only because their hugs are too brief for Lena to melt into (it takes her a minute, bc she never gets used to that kind of affection from strangers-- or anyone, really).

But eventually the layers peel away to reveal the real Lena, and Kara's family slowly begin to love her-- in no small part because they can see how happy they are together.

For a short time, everything is perfect-- save the distance and Lena's busy royal schedule and Kara's career. They put in the effort, because they want to, and it's worth it.

And then the press finds out.
