have the people who dogpile those asking for a haymitch or finnick book as having “missed the point” and “being just like the capitol” and “just wanting to see violence” forgotten that The Games themselves often take up significantly less than half of the books???? like when people ask for a haymitch or finnick book they’re very clearly not asking for 40 chapters of kids killing kids ??? they’re asking for books that explore the lives of deeply beloved characters, how those lives were irreparably changed by circumstances beyond their control, and a more detailed illustration of points that only get alluded to in the original books.

Akaza would hate ableists btw.

Using him as reaction memes for ableist posts goes against his character.

He took care of his sick father & wife and was bothered by the inaccessibility of medicine/work/daily life for them. He was not bothered by having to help them. He has a lot of respect for them & understands they’re struggling more than he would ever. Same logic would apply to disabled folks because it’s almost exactly the same, especially in terms of work & “inconveniencing people.”

He literally laments about this TWICE.

He wouldn’t care “why” you’re being ableist either.

He would think it’s a shitty low blow to make fun of someone’s disability period, because that means you have a predetermined mindset against them to begin with. If you have a problem with a person, you have a problem with the person, NOT their disability.

You are hiding behind the fact that the disabled person did something wrong to be ableist. You are not facing things head on with your own bigotry. He considers able bodied people who do not face things head on as weak.

And his entire character is that he hates weak people. Like ableists.

Some of you prefer to gossip about disabilities, illnesses, and people who “inconvenience” you. You prefer to record them while their backs are turned. You prefer to make fun of the neurodiverse behind their backs than to their faces. Akaza would loathe you. You are the weak person he entirely bases his idea of “weakness” on. Literally this panel.

He would hate you if you were ableist <3 it’s a big part of his character too.

(This is me saying we need to keep Akaza out of the reach of anyone under 14 bc you guys are NOT tolerant and kind enough to have him. He’s one of the most empathetic characters & ya’ll are using him for your ableist tiktoks. It sucks. Okay, jeez. After digging through some posts on Reddit I did not realize how hated of a character Penny was. And almost nobody seemed to understand why.

...Am I seriously about to do a character defense post? I guess I am.

Literally 80% of the people who say they don’t like Penny bring up the interactions between Arven and Penny in Area Zero, with the two consistently butting heads. And Penny is seen as a bully for that? They’re mutually unpleasant to each other throughout most of the sequence, Penny isn’t a hypocrite for saying she’s against bullying and then fighting with someone who is already fighting with her. It’s not one-sided. 

I’ve seen people describe Penny, in these exact words: a jerk, an asshole, a bully, a bitch, and probably more derogatory language that I’ve forgotten. First, when? She’s snarky and can definitely rude, but she’s not a bully. Second, Penny is a socially isolated teenager. She didn’t even have the courage to meet her closest friends in real life after being subjected to what was clearly a traumatizing amount of bullying. Of course she’s snarky, of course she can come off as rude, she doesn’t know how to talk to people and is young. 

Would I call Penny a good person? No, probably not, some of her actions - especially regarding Operation Starfall - are shitty and there were definitely better ways she could’ve gone about sorting her stuff out. But there’s a blatant reason for that.

And somewhat off topic but still relating to the theme, someone said they hated Arven because he’s a dick, and that having a sad backstory doesn’t excuse him being an asshole the entire game. I don’t even know where they’re coming from with this - Arven’s only really an asshole to you during his first scene and not much afterwards. Most of his douchiness is directed towards Koraidon/Miraidon, who for most of the game he views as having ruined his entire life. Scarlet and Violet’s story is about kids (kids!!) overcoming personal traumas, you can’t just write off pivotal backstory as an excuse for letting a character be an asshole.

I am literally begging Pokemon players, hate a character all you want but at least understand why you hate them in the first place. Seriously, even go ahead and hate them for the pettiest reasons - I don’t like Kofu for the sole reason he won’t stop saying ‘Vaultin’ Veluza’ over and over, I’m certainly guilty in this too - but at least understand why you hate them in the first place.

I personally try to get every ship, even If I ship Wenclair. For instance I get the Wednesday and Xavier ship, but I just can't understand the Wednesday/Tyler shippers. Like the guy tried to kill her friends and lead her away so Thing can be attacked. I don't see Wednesday forgiving that even if he has a tragic backstory.

Hot Take: The international politics in Engage is actually way more interesting than the politics of Three Houses. In Three Houses, everything eventually came back to Slither (Kingdom and Dukedom broke away because of Slither, Empire was in Slither’s hand, Duscar was because of Slither, very few of the main conflicts was because of anything other than Slither and that is really boring). In Engage, there is actual real conflict. The Brodian/Elusian conflict is not some conspiracy but people acting like people. They set Brodia up to be your friend and Elusia to be the enemy and then slowly the story and characters remind you that Brodia is actually the aggressor and Elusia the victim. 

PLUS and I don’t know how many people have commented on this, BOTH Firene and Solm knew what was going on in the Brodia/Elusia conflict, both are well aware of who is the aggressor and who isn’t and instead of signing a non aggression pact with Elusia, giving them the strength that might have made Brodia hesitate and stop the attacks. They signed the non-aggression pact with Brodia. This further isolates Elusia and cuts off any chance of them getting a defense alliance with either Solm or Firene. 

In political realism (the asshole political theory in International Affairs), it was smart that they sided with Brodia since Brodia is the one strong and aggressive one and could attack them, but in non asshole politics, it means Elusia was completely isolated and so it is not surprising they had to turn to the Fell Dragon since they literally had no one else. 

This is good and interesting political writing and I am really surprised that Engage handled international politics in a much better way than Three Houses which was literally all about a war between three countries.
