Chapter 1

"I told you, Cami. You pick the bar, you pay."

Camille wasn't too happy by that remark, as she let out an exasperated groan before digging around in her purse, while her best friend pushed out a playful laugh. She grabbed her wallet, slipping out a twenty and handing it to the dark haired girl, who gave a smug smile before turning back to the bartender to order a round of drinks. Natalie ordered a tequila on the rocks for herself and a Bellini for her best friend before taking the time to glance around the venue. It was a little underwhelming, if she was being honest. When she agreed to drinks on a Saturday night with her childhood best friend in her home of downtown Los Angeles, Natalie expected something a little more exciting. Craved something a little more exciting. She had flown in from Michigan and cancelled her plans with her father tonight for the very excuse to get plastered at some nightclub in L.A.—Natalie had a reason to be less than happy when the night she was looking forward to wasn't as she expected. Aside from her disappointment, Natalie couldn't say she was surprised—Camille wasn't one for loud music and mass hoards of drunk people. She was definitely the more sensible one of the pair, only being a few months older but all the more wiser. It'd been that way since grade school, so Natalie didn't expect her best friend to change too much over the past year they'd gone without seeing each other.

"So how's L.A.? Living up to your expectations yet?" Natalie asked as they waited for their drinks. That was the one thing that surprised her about Camille—after graduating university with a degree in law, she made the impulsive decision to pack her bags and move to California. All of their friends had collectively agreed that was more of a Natalie thing to do, and Natalie herself had only furthered that statement. It was out of character, seeing Camille navigate her way through the streets of Los Angeles, but Natalie would be lying if she didn't say it was refreshing to see her best friend stepping out of her comfort zone. It was like all that Natalie had done for Camille during their high school years—dragging her to parties, smuggling in alcohol to their junior prom, getting drunk for the first time together—hadn't just gone to waste, because now Camille was really living. And Natalie liked to think to herself that she was a part of that journey.

"I actually really love it here," Camille answered, flashing her friend a smile as she tucked a stray piece of her dirty blonde hair behind her ear. Natalie didn't miss the way the girl’s blue eyes lit up with excitement, her pink lips twitching into a grin. "Every day I wake up and I still have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that I live here. Like, this is my life now. It's crazy."

Natalie offered a smile, and thankfully Camille missed how it didn't quite meet her eyes. Truthfully, Natalie had always been jealous of the girl. At first, it rooted from her straight A's in school or when she'd been asked to the school dance before Natalie had. Although those stereotypical high school issues still played a big part in Natalie's bottled-up insecurities, the past year had really opened her eyes at how envious she had been of Camille Johnson throughout their entire friendship. It had hit Natalie like a ton of bricks when the older of the two announced her moving to California. Natalie realized how put-together her best friend was, unlike herself. Natalie, crashing on her brother’s couch in a run-down apartment located in the middle of Dearborn, Michigan, was nowhere near put-together. All the while, Camille had moved across the country, found herself a well-paying, long-term job, and resided in a spacious apartment just off the downtown stretch of one of the biggest and most successful cities in the world. Camille worked full-time as a case handler at a law firm in L.A. and was exactly where she wanted to be—Natalie had a mixed degree in business and fashion and was working full-time at Urban Outfitters just to afford being able to sleep on her brother’s couch. It wasn’t her definition of ideal.

"One Bellini and tequila." Natalie was pulled from her thoughts as their drinks were passed across the counter top, and the raven haired girl had to hold herself back from downing the thing in one take.

"You know—" Natalie glanced around, bringing her glass to her lips. She took a sip of her drink, grimacing before tapping her neon orange acrylic nails to the cup. "—This place sucks. I mean, there's like ten people here. And the music isn't even good. And how do you manage to fuck up tequila on the rocks so badly? It's tequila and ice, not rocket science." Natalie didn't bother to lower her voice, which probably wasn't the best move as she could feel the bartender shooting daggers at her from behind the bar.

"Quit being such a buzzkill," Camille said, eyeing the girl who set her drink down with a scoff. She gave the bartender an apologetic smile before turning back to her friend, who was adjusting the straps on her bra. Camille checked her phone. "It's barely eight. I'm sure the place will liven up once the night starts."

"Well, my night started an hour ago," Natalie defended, taking her purse from the back of her chair and hitching it up her shoulder. The girl stepped down from the bar stool she sat at, her black stilettos coming in contact with the hardwood flooring before she looked at the girl over her shoulder. "I'm dipping. You coming or staying, Johnson?"

Rolling her eyes, Camille hopped down too and followed her stubborn best friend out of the bar, leaving their drinks on the counter. Natalie couldn't help but revel in the feeling of pride, the familiar feeling of control that she gained when they stepped outside and she realized the night was back in her hands. Natalie loved Camille, but God, did it ever feel right when she took the reins.

Natalie took a whiff of fresh air and smiled before turning to her friend, swinging an arm around the shorter girl's shoulders. "Me 'n you, CJ. No bar will ever be good enough for the two of us."

"Actually, I was pretty content in there—"

A blast of sirens cut her off, making both of the girls glance down the street out of sheer curiosity. An ambulance whizzed past and turned left onto the road perpendicular to them, and Natalie could feel a smirk crawling across her lips as the sirens dimmed. Camille looked back up at her friend, locking eyes with the dark haired girl before letting out a sort of annoyed-but-knowing sigh. Camille knew that look. It was the look that always got the pair into trouble as teenagers, and would most likely be getting them into trouble as young adults now, too.

"Natalie, no." Camille shook her head, unwrapping herself from the brunette's hold. She lifted a pointed finger, her expression stern. "You and I both agreed on bar hopping tonight. I want to have a good time. That doesn’t include getting into shit with the cops. I don’t need a repeat of senior year," Camille said, recalling the events of a party Natalie had dragged her to during their last year of high school, when the cops showed up and took everyone they could find on the premise into the station. It was Camille’s first—and hopefully last—encounter with the police. She didn’t want another one—one that would be on her permanent record.

"Oh, come on. You want to have a good time? That sounds like a good time," Natalie exclaimed, taking Camille's smaller hand in her's. The reluctant girl groaned as she felt herself being pulled across the street to where a taxi was sitting, and she knew there was no use in arguing with her. Natalie had always been the reckless, don't-think-before-you-do type, and no matter how hard she tried to, Camille could never change her. They'd known each other since third grade and Camille had tried everything in her power to knock some sense into her, but failed miserably. There was no going back when Natalie was set on something, and unfortunately, most times it involved some stupid and dangerous adventure that Camille didn't necessarily feel comfortable with.

"We're not sixteen anymore, Natalie. We can't just go on meaningless adventures and not think about the consequences," Camille whined as the younger girl opened the door to the yellow cab, slipping inside. Camille followed her in nonetheless, her sense of loyalty overpowering her gut instincts. No matter what crazy shit Natalie was getting herself into, Camille was her best friend. She couldn’t let her do so alone.

"Follow those sirens," Natalie told the driver as she flipped her hair over her shoulder before looking over at Camille. The brunette smiled a wicked, mischievous smile, one that Camille knew all too well. "I came to L.A. to have fun, Cami. So let's have fun." They were pulling off the street before Camille even had time to close the car door.

The taxi pulled up to a large venue, one that was made of stone and looked older than the Colosseum. The parking lot was packed, and there were a few people lingering outside. It looked to be an arena of some sorts—for what activity, Natalie had no idea. But she did have some intention of finding out.

"This should cover it," the raven haired girl said confidently, leaning forward to hand the taxi driver a twenty dollar bill. The two girls shuffled out of the car, and Camille glanced at her friend with wide, hesitant eyes. Once Natalie had shut the car door, she turned back to Camille and noticed her expression, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "We're having fun, Camille. Loosen up. Where there's sirens, there's fun."

"I'm pretty sure that contradicts, like, every law ever."

Ignoring the worried look on the blonde's face, Natalie took Camille's hand in her's and pulled her toward the set of double doors leading into the arena. Loud music blared from inside, the bass heavy and Natalie could feel it in her heart when they entered the building. As soon as they stepped inside, Camille and Natalie were pushed to the side as two paramedics rushed out with a man laying on a gurney, his face bloody and groans spurring out of his lips. He had a splint holding his leg straight, his mouth parted as a stained-red cloth was somewhat stuffed between his lips. Natalie raised her eyes at the sight before looking at Camille excitedly.

"What is this place?" Camille murmured, glancing around. Her hand was still entangled with Natalie's out of fear, and the younger girl dragged them farther inside the venue, towards a plaque that had the word SUNNY'S engraved in silver, bold letters.

"Some sort of recreational center I think," Natalie voiced, retracting her hand as she folded her arms over her exposed chest. The air-conditioning was seemingly turned to high in the building, and Natalie was not dressed for the occasion, sporting a black bodysuit with spaghetti straps, the cleavage cut low to showcase the boob job that she’d invested in last summer, with white skinny jeans and the same coloured heels. She expected California to be warm in the July evening, hence her lack of jacket. Natalie pursed her lips, tilting her head as her eyes scanned down the plaque, reading some of the sponsors underneath.

"What, like a gym?"

Suddenly, a loud roar of cheers erupted from behind a second set of double doors, dragging the girls' attentions over. With a raise of her eyebrows and a quick smirk pulling at her lips, Natalie followed the sound, and Camille was right on her heels.

In the middle of the arena sat a large octagon, guarded with wires and strong pillars at every vertex. Chairs and bleachers rounded the cage, most of which were filled with people invested in the two men fighting in the octagon. The event seemed to be just starting back up again as tensions were high, and Natalie assumed they'd just taken a quick break after the accident that had led her and Camille there.

A man had just come out of a door diagonal to the girls, spiking both of their attentions, and Natalie abandoned Camille to walk over to him. He had dirty blond hair that was slicked back, a statue of around 6'0" and he was looking down at his phone, not paying attention to the girl approaching him before she rested a hand on his leather jacket clad bicep. He looked up.

"Hi, I'm Natalie." The girl flashed him a smile and he raised his eyebrows, sliding his phone in the back pocket of his black skinny jeans.

"I'm Ashton," the boy said politely, giving her a small, confused smile. Natalie used his hesitance to her advantage, cocking her head to the side like a lost puppy. She twirled her long brown hair around her tan finger, batting her false lashes up at the boy.

"Nice to meet you, Ashton. Quick question," Natalie quipped her head to the side, a grin toying on her lips while Ashton's eyes trailed down to her chest that wasn't exactly modestly covered. "What is this place? Some sort of boxing gym or something?"

"Mm, yeah. You could say that." Ashton's eyes lifted back up, meeting Natalie's. "I own the place." He was cute, she thought. Not really her type, but still undeniably attractive. The leather jacket he wore gave off a cool vibe, along with the red tee he sported underneath. His hazel eyes blended nicely with his skin, and dimples pierced his cheeks without him even having to smile. He couldn't be much older than Natalie, but definitely not younger. Ashton seemed to notice her obviously checking him out, as he quipped, "You seem a little lost, love. Did you come here alone?"

A light laugh fell from her red matte lips as Natalie shook her head. She nodded to Camille, who leaned against the wall, consumed by her phone. "My friend and I just came to check the place out." A spark lit up in Natalie's eyes as her lips curled into a smirk. "We just came from her boyfriend's house. Found him with another girl. It's sad, really. Camille always falls for the guys who turn out to be dicks."

She watched as Ashton glanced over, and she didn’t miss the spark in his eyes when he laid them on Camille.

"Sorry. . . You say, her boyfriend cheated on her?" he clarified, lifting his eyes back up to Natalie's brown ones. She nodded, a pout significant on her lips. A look of pity flashed over his face as Ashton mumbled, "That's no good. How's she holding up?"

"Not good," Natalie drawled. "She could definitely use some cheering up. I'm totally helpless here, though. I don't know what to do." Ashton's hazel eyes flickered over with concern, and Natalie would almost feel bad if she knew better—she'd played this game many times before and practically became immune to the feeling of guilt.

"Listen, my friends and I were gonna head out for drinks after the match—I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you guys came along."

A smirk played on Natalie's lips as she internally gave herself a pat on the back. God, a year out of the game and she was still scoring. "I don't know," Natalie pushed, masking her satisfaction with a frown as she crossed her arms, looking back over at an oblivious Camille. "I'm not too sure Cami will be in the mood. I mean, can you blame her? I'd be heartbroken if I found my boyfriend of two years in bed with my sister, too."

Ashton's eyebrows shot up at this, his light brown eyes wide and full of concern. "You sure I can't buy you two a drink later?" Home run.

"I'll see what I can do to convince her," Natalie mused, placing her hand on his bicep gently. Her lips curled up in a not-so-genuine smile and she blinked up at him innocently. "You're sure we aren't imposing, though?"

"Of course not. I'll go check with my friends now," he said with a small smile hinting at his lips. Ashton glanced into the filled arena before looking back at Natalie. "Stay here, I'll be back in a moment."

Ashton was disappearing around the corner a moment later and Natalie let out an excited squeal as she approached Camille. The girl looked up, rolling her eyes at the excitement her best friend was practically radiating. “What did you do now?”

"We're having fun tonight!" Natalie sang out, earning a quip of the eyebrow from Camille. Natalie grabbed one of her hands, smiling wickedly. "I got us invited to drinks with a hot guy and his friends. And he's, like, totally into you, so you're welcome." Impressed, Camille raised her eyebrows at her friend and let a sort of smile creep across her lips, only for it to be replaced with a scowl after hearing the next bit. "I may or may not have made up a sob story on your behalf about your boyfriend of two years cheating on you with your sister, but it's okay because you're gonna get laid tonight!"

"You—what?"

"It's fine, Cami!" said a reassuring Natalie, who wasn't doing much to keep to her name. "His name is Ashton and he's tall and handsome and totally wants to fuck you. Not to mention, he owns this place so he must be rolling in money."

"Natalie," the blonde girl grumbled, dropping her hand to instead bring it up to rub her forehead in distress. Camille couldn't believe that she'd fallen for another one of Natalie's childish games—she should've known better. "You can't just do this shit anymore. Setting me up with someone is one thing, but lying to do so is another. I have a reputation to uphold here, and a good job doing what I love that I can't risk for another one of your stupid games!"

Natalie would be lying if she said that Camille's sudden outburst didn't hurt her feelings. But they'd been friends for years, and had fought countless times. Natalie was used to Camille getting upset with her, and she knew that the girl would always come around to forgive her.

That's why, after Camille had stormed off, muttering something about getting some fresh air, and Ashton had approached her again, Natalie flashed him a sweet smile before exclaiming, "She's all in."

The sandy haired boy smiled. "Great. One of the guys fighting in the ring today is with us—name’s Calum. Great dude. You’d hit it off with him, I’m sure.”

“One of the guys fighting?” she repeated before glancing over to the octagon in the middle of the open space. There was two guys in the ring, one of which was sitting on a bench in the corner as another was knelt in front of him. The man kneeling had a black baseball cap on with blond hair sticking out messily, and his whole attire was dark. The man sitting wore only a pair of shorts, shirtless and skin gleaming against the bright lights of the facility. He had tan skin that was littered with tattoos, dark curls on his head that seemed to be damp with sweat as some stuck to his forehead, despite his conscious efforts of running his hand through it. The guy kneeling was talking as the other guy listened, giving a few nods every now and then. Natalie peeled her eyes away, looking back at Ashton. “Which one?”

“The one sitting.”

Natalie used this as an excuse to look back to the ring, admiring the darker skinned boy that Ashton seemingly knew. He was undeniably attractive, and his choice of career—or hobby, whichever it may be— seemed to only further the fact. He was a boxer. The thin layer of sweat building on his skin glistened under the bright lights of the complex, and Natalie noticed the muscles under his bicep—which looked bigger than Natalie’s head—bulging as his grip on the white towel he held tightened. His jaw was clenched, eyebrows lowered while he listened to what the other boy had to say. Natalie was too engaged in the beautiful boy that she hadn’t even realized the additional body present behind her, and only peeled her eyes away from the fighter when she heard her best friend’s familiar voice.

“. . . I’m Camille. It’s nice to meet you.”

Turning her head back to look over her shoulder, Natalie saw a smiling Camille, her cheeks flush with a light pink colour while her blue eyes gazed up at Ashton adorably. Natalie held back a smile; she knew Camille wouldn’t appreciate the I told you so look in front of the boy, so she’d hold it off until later.

“I was just telling Natalie about how I’m friends with one of the guys in the ring,” Ashton explained, never failing to draw Camille’s attention away from him. He didn’t seem to notice her infatuation, though, as he gestured to the octagon. “I own the facility, manage all the guys here. I’ve known Calum for years. The other guy is his trainer, Michael.”

Natalie glanced back over and saw the boy stretched his arms behind his head, continuing to listen to his trainer as he nodded. He began wrapping his fist in white sport tape, shaking his head before saying something to Michael. Natalie wished she could hear their discussion.

“So you manage, like, fights and stuff?” Camille asked. The two engaged in a conversation about Ashton’s job, all the while Natalie’s attention was on the beautiful tattooed boy, not at all aware of another pair of eyes on her.

got7! street racing au: Jaebum (Part 1)

A/N: Hello! First off, thank you so much for the love and reaction that this fic has received. I am so motivated to see this through till the end that I’ve been planning like crazy. But much like relationships, I will ruin a fic if I plan it out too much. So, here is the first part of the story. I hope you can learn a little bit about our got7!racers and do let me know what you think/want to see and I’ll incorporate them into the story!!

Three cubes of ice slipped neatly into the glass. The clink of drinks being passed around at the bar was drowned by the slow lilt of a grand piano in the background. At an establishment of this stature, it was only ordinary to see the entitled heirs of Korean conglomerates mingle daintily with each other.

In his usual corner, Lee Hwan sat in the middle of his group of admirers. To call them friends, would associate an amicable nature to the otherwise stone-cold heir. Lee Hwan was known for three things within his circle of acquaintances: smart investments, fast cars and a temper to be vary of. It was rare to see him lose his cool in public; it almost never happened. But if anyone could step on his toes, it would be Im Jaebum.

“I honestly don’t know why you tolerate him. I mean, sure, he’s the best in the scene right now but you’re not so bad either. Right, Hwan?”

Someone should have warned this second son of some company that to compare Lee Hwan with anybody, was the quickest way to death. Hwan’s eyes locked momentarily onto this insignificant boy, his shoulders shifting to stare him down into submission. Before he could say another word, Hwan’s trusted friend and the manager of his racing team was quick to speak up. “Jaebum is the best because he’s in our team. He would be no one without Hwan and he should know his place before he decides to act out again.”

The growing insinuation in the room spoke volumes of the incident at Soyang Lake. In the early hours of the morning, the same group which sat huddled around Lee Hwan, had gathered in the boughs of the forest around Soyang lake. The ‘three black roses’ was an exclusive group of racing enthusiasts who met thrice a year to watch over chosen racers competing against each other in a maddening chase. They were a coming together of three princes from conglomerate families who met not only to organize and watch over the underground street racing scene, but also to shake up each other’s’ future. The Soyang Takeover was a fan-favourite. Winding roads hugged by a mystic lake on one side and death-trap cliffs on the other. For an automobile enthusiast, it provided a prime opportunity to test the skill and courage of his driver.

For Lee Hwan and Jaebum, this was a race to establish that they were still the kings of street racing in Korea.

Unlike previous times, when Jaebum had silently obliged with Hwan’s orders, this time was different. As the crowd watched, Jaebum’s car David swerved dangerously against the railing and pulled ahead of the Goliath. Its screeching tires were in harmony with the echoing cheers of a rampant crowd. The onlookers raised their glasses in blatant excitement, compliments for Jaebum pouring over their lips like honeyed liquor. At a distance, Youngjae and Yugeyom looked at each other in relief. Jaebum’s neat trick was a huge risk, especially on Soyang’s roads. But he had always managed to do the impossible, earning him and his car the rightful nickname ‘David’.

Just then at the bar, someone drew the group’s attention with a clearing of their throat.

“Hwan.” Jaebum’s deep tenor resonated softly in the air. The relationship between these men had grown tense over the last few weeks, in the wake of the race.

“Mn.”

Jaebum knew not to push Hwan when he was surrounded by his lackeys. His gaze carried over to gentle Seunghoon, the manager. At his cue, Seunghoon stood up with a flourish and scooped Jabeum by his shoulders. “Oh come now, you don’t have to be like this. Just apologise to our hyung, and he’ll surely embrace you back into his good graces.”

An uncomfortable silence followed his over the top attempt at flattery. Under his fingers, Jaebum’s shoulders tensed at the mention of an apology. He had done nothing to apologise for. Hwan had demanded a victory and that is exactly what Jaebum delivered. How he managed that delivery, was not his concern.

“I’m here for my pay.”

At the sound of money, as most people do, the entitled bunch of men scoffed. “Shamelessly asking for the money huh, these street urchins really don’t change do they.”

Hwan’s gaze brushed over the passing comment and went straight to Jaebum. Just like he had expected, he watched the man’s fingers fold into a fist. His lips grew thinner and a smudge of tension settled between his brows. Ever since he was a teenager, Jaebum had been easy to anger. But Hwan knew that eliciting anger was a fool’s knife. Anybody could do that.

As Jaebum icily slinked away from Seunghoon’s hold, a flutter of money rained in front of him. Hwan lay satisfied, a slow smirk cooking on the side of his lips. “You’re right. Of course you’re here for the pay, you deserve it Bum-ah.” Hwan lazily stood up from his chair, his hand grazing the curve of Jaebum’s shoulder. He circled his racer like a tiger on a hunt, under no visible hurry to do any damage.

As he leaned in closer, Jaebum heard the final words whispered into his ear, “I’ll just be really sad if something were to happen to your daily wages. You know how we get. We rich and spoiled brats have too many pets to take care of. You have a few people left to pay, don’t you?”

There it was. The obvious slander, packaged in glitter. Hwan didn’t need anybody else to humiliate his underlings for him. He did that job all too well himself. For Jaebum, however, this was more than humiliation. This was a warning, and he had heard it loud and clear.

Hwan’s whiskey lay unattended on the mahogany table as Jaebum crouched by it. He slowly picked up the leftover bills, counting each one under his breath. As the last bill had been folded safely in his hands, he straightened his back and looked pointedly at the ground.

“I’m sorry, Hwan.”

Hwan waved a dismissing hand in the air. Seunghood rushed to translate the peacock’s blatant dismissal of the matter, and escorted Jaebum out of the premises.

“Hyung!”

A slender frame jumped earnestly by the street corner. This early in the afternoon, the street was bustling with activity. Women squatted by the pavement to sell fresh produce, restaurants swinging their doors open to welcome the lunch crowd and shop-keepers peeping into the streets to catch hold of strangers.

Jaebum’s face visibly lightened at the sight of the younger boy. Yugyeom was one of the few people in his neighbourhood who could keep him sane. He reminded Jaebum of simpler times, of racing across the grey tarmac on summer evenings. As he inched closer to the entrance of the grey building, Yugyeom bounded towards him.

“Is it done, hyung? Did you get it? Will we able to settle the amount today?” Yugeyom’s song-bird lilt of a voice crashed into Jaebum like spring wind. He huffed out a laugh at the visible urgency. “Yes. Youngjae will be fine from now on.”

Slipping his hands into his jacket to pat the bundle of money one more time, the boys entered the office of a loan shark.

Although it was a naïve statement, Jaebum hoped that his apology would have smoothed over his indiscretion. Enough to help him protect that truth; to protect Youngjae and Yugyeom from further damage.

One of these days, he’d figure out how to get Sniper out of his shell. He was sure of it.

He’d tried just about everything he could think of. He’d invited Sniper to the movies, to tag along to help with a shopping run, out to eat at three kinds of restaurants for lunch and two for dinner. Hell, he’d ended up roping Sniper into a double date, himself set up with a fiery-tempered girl who’d dumped a drink on his head and then written her number on his arm, Sniper with the tag-along friend who apparently needed to get out more. The date hadn’t gotten much of anywhere, the girl and him half-arguing the whole time and Sniper and the other girl staring at their plates and hardly even chiming in when invited. It had taken a bit of pestering to get Sniper to go out again after that.

He dragged Sniper to team meals, to bars, to clubs, to casinos. To a museum, to the farmer’s market, to a flea market. And each and every time he brought Sniper somewhere, the man ended up pacing along beside Scout, hands in his pockets, quietly chiding him when he got argumentative with civilians and quietly laughing at him when his bad luck had him making a fool of himself.

He just wouldn’t open up. Scout told him story after story, showed him all his own interests, presented every kind of joke he could think of, and the guy wouldn’t budge. Wouldn’t start telling his own jokes, wouldn’t start telling his own stories. Wouldn’t commentate on the things around them unless directly asked, and never once suggested where they should go next.

If Scout didn’t like a challenge so much, he would’ve ripped his own damn hair out.

The fair was his last resort. If he couldn’t get Sniper to open up somehow with the excitement and variety and overall greatness of an entire fair, then he was denouncing the man as a robot who did not feel things or have real emotions and turning him over to Engie for further study.

This was the middle day of the fair, meaning it was straight up bustling. Every stand had at least two people at it, and all the food booths had lines, and all the rides had even longer lines, and the number of teenagers stood around with each other was downright astronomical. This was a big fair, too, one of those harvest-type once-a-year nothing-else-ever-happens-in-this-state festivals that people would come from all over the place to go to. Engie had a lot to say on those kinds of things, and in fact had been the one to suggest Scout go check it out after hearing about it from some other old person when he was out doing some work-related supply run stuff.

Scout was most excited, as he often was, by the food.

The first thing they did once they got in the place was beeline to the first booth, some caramel corn thing, to get a small bag of it. Sniper commented lightly on his restraint. The second was to go to the next booth, which sold cotton candy. They got one cone to split between them. The third was to go to the next booth, which was one of those fair-specific food trucks. Sniper was starting to catch on.

“Aren’t these… well, the same sorts of food you can just find in a city somewhere?” Sniper asked, voice lowered so that only Scout could hear him.

Scout put on his best expression of complete shock and offense. “What! No, it’s totally different! The hell you talkin’ about? Fair food is awesome!”

“I mean… I’m not so sure, mate,” Sniper said carefully, glancing over the colorfully-painted sign.

“I—okay, hold on,” Scout instructed, and turned to pay as he was handed his latest portion of food, the Bucket ‘O Fries. “I mean, c’mon, check this out! It’s a bucket of french fries, what’s to dislike?”

Sniper looked at him blankly as they walked away from the food truck. Scout breathed in and began to elaborate.

“I mean, okay, the quality of the fries? Not great. I’ll admit, they’re fuckin’ shit, garbage oil sticks, and they’re also just straight up delicious. They’re the best trash. They’re the truck stop diner bacon of french fries. They’re tasty nightmares. I’m literally gonna like, sweat oil and salt after eating these, and it’s absolutely worth it. You can’t get this specific brand of perfect awfulness anywhere but at a fair. And, and? It’s in a bucket. That’s hilarious. Food in a bucket is awesome. Like, it’s maybe the closest a food place can get to calling its customers animals without making them eat from a trough, and I’m all about it. And you get to keep the bucket. Like, I just have a little plastic trash-lookin’ bucket now. What part of this isn’t objectively the greatest?”

Sniper considered the question. “Well, don’t imagine you’ll be able to eat all those,” he said after thinking about it for a moment. “So, not ideal.”

“Dude, don’t even worry about that. Best part of a carnival like this? They’ve got all this horrible garbage food, and like thirty feet away—“ He stopped in his tracks, and Sniper stopped as well, following his line of sight. “—They have spinny rides that’ll make you puke.”

Sniper was still. Scout watched him, waiting for a reaction. “Rides make you throw up?” he asked after a second.

“If I eat a whole fuckin’ bucket of french fries before I get on, then hell yeah they do,” Scout said cheerfully.

Sniper considered that, or maybe just stared at the ride and all of the screaming and hollering people aboard it.

“How many foods come in a bucket, y’think?” Sniper asked.

“Uh, you got fries,” Scout said, lifting his Bucket ‘O Fries to demonstrate his point. “You got fried chicken. I went to this place once with chicken tenders in a bucket with fries.”

“So just a combination of the first two,” Sniper said.

“Oh my god, what? Dude, no way, fried chicken and chicken tenders are wildly different, you kiddin’ me?” Scout gasped. “Barely the same food group!”

Sniper shifted his feet, still watching the ride. “How’re they different?”

“Don’t even get me started, man,” Scout warned.

“Do you even know the food groups?” Sniper asked next, voice flat in a way that Scout had learned meant Sniper was joking.

“Sniper, as a connoisseur of absolute garbage, you insult me,” Scout deadpanned back. “Let’s take some laps of the games and stuff before we go on the rides, I gotta have time to appreciate these fries before they’re being sent into a trash can.”

Sniper shrugged in agreement, following Scout as he started off towards some of the games.

Scout blew a good twenty dollars on the bottle ring toss game, pleased to hear Sniper chiming in every time he made a particularly bad throw. The next booth over had Scout making a repeat performance with the cane ring toss game, except he did manage to win himself exactly one prize, a sticky hand which only ended up directly in his pocket due to the look of immediate dismay on Sniper’s face when he saw Scout wielding it.

“Hey, if there’s one of those shooting games here, think you’d wanna play it? Show up some people?” Scout asked.

Sniper shook his head. “Mate, even out here in civvies,” he started, plucking at the shoulder of Scout’s civilian t-shirt and the chest of his own choice of clothing, a green-grey button-up, “I imagine an Australian washing out the place and a Boston bloke cheering him on would earn enough looks to get us recognized. Especially since you’ve still got the hat and I’ve the glasses.” He tapped first the bill of Scout’s hat, then the side of his own shades.

“Then we fake some accents,” Scout said cheerfully.

Sniper raised an eyebrow, which Scout had long learned was the closest thing to emoting that Sniper managed most of the time. “As if you know how to fake accents,” Sniper said, a note of disbelief showing through.

“What, you think I don’t?” Scout challenged, bumping elbows with him partially by accident as they needed to squeeze between two gaggles of people.

“Do one, then,” Sniper said simply.

Scout cleared his throat, raising his chin. “Oi, look ‘ere, mind tellin’ me where you might find a hotel ‘round ‘ere?” Scout said in an approximation of a lighthearted British accent.

Sniper stared at him. “The hell’d you learn to do that? That was damn well spot on,” Sniper said, both eyebrows raised now.

Scout kept grinning, ducking ahead for a second to squeeze between two intersecting lines of people. When Sniper caught back up he started explaining. “Me an’ one’a my brothers spent these two summers pullin’ this scam,” he started to explain. “We’d pretend to be tourists in town for tour group stuff, sneak into tour groups around the middle’a the day with these old busted cameras he got off people and fake accents so people thought we were from somewhere else, get into buffets for tour-specific stuff and eat for free and leave again,” he explained. “First summer we did it for like two months straight with different tours, second summer we only made it a month in before we had to cut it out.”

“Why?”

“His ex-girlfriend apparently got a job as a tour guide. That was, uh, the second time I ended up in custody that summer.”

“Hooligan,” Sniper murmured in a way that made Scout unsure if he was being made fun of, scolded, or congratulated.

They ended up at the ball toss at some point, which Scout did end up knocking out of the park a few times until the attendant told him to please move along already, reasoning that they already had a frankly ludicrous number of stuffed animals. Indeed, Sniper was carrying three large ones, and Scout had another one in the arm not carrying assorted food.

“I’m namin’ this guy Cotton Candy,” Scout said matter-of-factly, hefting the blue-pink-and-white rabbit up higher as it started to slip from his grip. “And I’m naming that guy Fry Bucket.”

“Which one?” Sniper asked, glancing between the three stuffed animals in his hand.

“That one,” Scout said, bumping a the yellow-and-purple-and-white-and-black slightly-suspicious-looking cat with his elbow. “Because the colors are bright like the bucket.”

“What about the other two?” Sniper asked.

“Eh, they’re yours, up to you.”

Sniper didn’t speak for a moment, just shifting the stuffed animals a bit. “You sure?”

“Yeah, I don’t got a use for four of these guys,” Scout shrugged. “Already I’m thinkin’ about whether Pyro’s gonna want Fry Bucket or Cotton Candy more.”

“What’s that second name about?” Sniper asked. “Is that a brand?”

“…What?”

“Cotton candy.” Sniper’s accent wrapped around the words strangely. “That a specific kind? The, er, blue-pink stuff?”

“…Of cotton candy?” Scout asked slowly.

“Yeah. It’s fairy floss, so is cotton candy then just a certain—“

“It’s fuckin’ what?” Scout asked, eyes lighting up.

Sniper paused for a few seconds. “…You people made up your own name for somethin’ again, haven’t you?” Sniper asked, sighing.

“Fairy floss? Okay, let’s talk about this. Let’s talk about that name.”

“No, we already did this with the bonnet and hood thing, and the… prawn and shrimp thing. So you people call it cotton candy. Noted. Moving on.”

“So like, the tiny winged girls, fuckin’—so goddamn Tinkerbell, she brushes her teeth, right? And she’s gotta be thorough. Ain’t gonna get no gum disease here in fuckin’ Neverland, no way, no adults here so no dentists so that’d go pretty bad. So she’s gotta floss, right? And she uses a goddamn cloud-lookin’ pillowy thing? It’s fairy floss?”

“I didn’t invent all of Australian slang,” Sniper interjected. “You can’t judge me for my country’s choice in naming things. I can’t help it.”

“It’s cotton candy, man! It’s cotton, like outta some kinda pillow, made with sugar. I don’t get why you would call it somethin’ else.”

“Apparently Ireland and those blokes up there split the difference, called it candy floss,” Sniper added in before Scout could get too carried away.

“It’s still not floss! Couldn’t pick a different one? Called it, what, fairy cotton?”

Sniper’s lip twitched up for a moment. “I’m nearly sure that’s some sort of code word for hooch, mate.”

“What the fuck is hooch? Are you speaking English? Am I in fuckin’ wonderland right now?” Scout asked, downright baffled.

“Hooch. Marijuana, cannabis. Mate, you said you grew up in the city, the hell you mean you don’t know what hooch is?”

“Who the fuck calls it hooch?! Man, I knew that Australia was weird, but seriously, it’s gotta be crazy down there,” Scout laughed.

They continued to wander the fairgrounds for awhile longer, and while Sniper was a bit more talkative than usual, Scout couldn’t be sure it wasn’t his imagination and his quietly trying to prompt Sniper into saying more. Eventually Scout could tell that the fairground was nearing closing time, crowd thinning alongside the various booths starting to close up shop and haul things away and lock stuff up for the night.

“I don’t think we’re gonna get around to that eating a ton of food and throwing up thing,” Scout said, a little bit put out.

“Sounds…” Sniper started to say, and stopped again quickly.

Scout waited. “What? What were you gonna say?”

Sniper hesitated. “I was going to say that it… sounds a bit juvenile, don’t you think?” he said slowly. “Not quite as fun as an adult.”

Scout considered that for a few seconds. “…Yeah. Maybe,” he conceded. “Haven’t done that since I was a teen. Might not be as great anymore.”

Sniper hummed. Scout kept talking, as he was used to.

“I mean, back then stuff was also pretty weird all the time,” he said, fidgeting with the handle on the fry bucket. “There was school, then practice, then I’d go home and have stuff with my brothers goin’ on all the time, some kinda shenanigans to pull. Now it’s just work, then I go do chores, then I’m all tired and don’t wanna do nothin’ except go to sleep, then I go to sleep and it’s the next day and I got work again. If I don’t got chores or whatever it’s fine, but man. When did I get all boring, y’know?”

“I don’t think you’re boring,” Sniper said quietly.

Scout looked at him, but couldn’t quite catch his expression the way he was holding the stuffed animals. “Huh? What’d you say?” he asked, fully aware but giving Sniper a chance to take that back or spin it into a joke the way just about everyone did.

“I don’t… I don’t think you’re boring,” Sniper said again, a bit louder now. “You’re interesting. You’ve got big opinions on just about everything, a million stories, a bunch of secret talents that only ever happen to come up at odd times. And you’ve got a lot of jokes. You’re…”

He trailed for a moment as they passed a small group of teens, chattering and laughing among themselves.

“You’re funny. You’re interesting,” Sniper said simply. “Not boring.”

Scout didn’t fight the smile that pulled at his face. “Well, look who’s gotten sweet all of a sudden,” he marveled aloud. Sniper readjusted the stuffed animals he was holding, bringing them closer to his face. “Well, speakin’ of sweet, want some more fairy floss before that place over there closes?”

Sniper nodded somewhere behind the layers of fluff and foam.

Their last stop was out towards the edge of the fairgrounds, the big ferris wheel they had set up. It was the tallest thing at the fair, no contest, and while it definitely wasn’t the biggest ferris wheel Scout had ever seen, or even been on, it was still surprisingly nice.

“Imagine that’s the sort that they need to break down to transport, rather than just keeping it on a trailer,” Sniper said almost offhandedly, following Scout’s line of sight.

“You know stuff about ferris wheels?” Scout asked, blinking.

Sniper shrugged. “Needed to for a job. Just the basics.”

“Huh. Cool.” Scout continued to look at the wheel. “Hey, I know sometimes they don’t shut those off at night, to like, promote the fair. Think they’ve still got an attendant working?”

“Probably not,” Sniper said, glancing around at the line of closed tents and booths around them.

“Wanna just hop on board?”

Sniper looked at him with a slight head tilt. “Why would we do that?”

Scout grinned. “Hey, we aren’t plannin’ on coming back here tomorrow, might as well make a grand exit and get kicked out,” he reasoned.

Sniper’s head tilted slightly further, almost disapproving. “We’d get arrested. The boss would be furious.”

“Assuming they call the cops and the cops get here before we’re gone. What’re they gonna do, be mad? Call our parents? Give us a stern lecture?” He elbowed Sniper. “Come on, let’s live a little!”

And then Scout was off, headed towards the wheel.

“I didn’t agree to this, technically,” Sniper said, hurrying to follow, voice slightly raised.

“But you’re gonna do it anyways!” Scout chimed.

Sniper did not argue that point.

The security was foolproof. A padlock and chain on a gate that was three feet high and had horizontal bars, as well as another lock on the control panel lever. Scout, known for his ability to jump vertically to well over his standing height, was quiet simply unequipped for such a challenge.

Sniper did have to hand over the stuffed animals before he could hop the gate, but soon Scout was placing Fry Bucket on lever duty and the other three nearby to stand guard, then he and Sniper were clambering into one of the cars and headed up.

It was going fairly slowly, to be fair. It took a solid minute for them to get only a bit above halfway up, and it spun them up backwards, meaning most of the view was obscured.

“Other wheels I went on usually spun the other way,” Scout commented lightly, kicking his feet up despite the slightly awkward angle. “Kept stopping to let people on and off, too. Way smaller, though.”

Sniper hummed. Silence fell.

Not long after they’d reached the apex and started heading back down again, Sniper sighed quietly. “I’m sorry if I got sharp with you,” he apologized, very serious. “I just… crowds aren’t much good to me. Too much noise, too much action. People too close. Gets me on edge.”

Scout was suddenly treated with the memory of just about every outing he’d gone so far as to take Sniper on, almost all of which involved crowds. “What?” he asked, taken aback. He pulled his feet down, sitting up. “Really? Dude, why didn’t you say nothin’? I’ve been takin’ you out to real bustlin’ places for like, two months!”

Sniper made a listless gesture. “Didn’t want to ruin your fun just because I’m a worrywart,” he replied, even quieter now. “And I doubt you’ve got many places you know that don’t involve whole masses of people. It’s your whole element.”

Scout couldn’t really argue with that. “Well, then I would’ve been letting you pick where we hang out,” he said stubbornly.

Sniper’s eyebrows drew together. “What? I thought you just wanted someone to bring with you when you went out,” Sniper said, clearly confused.

Scout blinked. “Dude, no. I’ve just been tryin’ to find a place you’d like to hang out in, see if I could get you to talk about anything. You’re always all quiet, I figured it was because you’re bored.”

“Of course not. Opposite, really. Gets overwhelming, I try my best to shut my mouth and pay attention.”

Scout needed a minute to loop his head around that. “Oh. Huh.” They reached the bottom of the wheel, but neither moved to get up, and they just continued on their steady path up again. “I… shit. Dude, I had no idea. I thought you were just hard to please.”

Sniper shook his head. “No. The places are always nice—this is nice—but I just…”

He trailed off. Scout waited for him to sort through his words.

“I just prefer… things like this,” he decided on. “Instead of noises and movement and close quarters and a hundred food smells.”

Scout’s mind went ahead and dealt with that one for a good minute. “Close quarters,” he repeated. “So this isn’t good either?”

“With other people, other folks,” Sniper clarified. “I’m fine with closed spaces.”

“Well, I’m other folks,” Scout said.

Sniper looked away, off to one side. “Not really,” he said, words almost lost to a breeze that decided to blow by just then. “You’re just Scout. I’m fine with you.”

Quiet again.

They made it to the top of the ride again, and Scout found himself relaxing a little bit. He tilted his head back.

“Can’t see the stars out here so good,” Scout said, looking up at the sky.

“Light pollution,” Sniper murmured in agreement, looking up as well. “I can hardly see any at all.”

“You’ve still got your shades on,” Scout half-laughed.

Sniper reached a hand up as if to push his glasses up his nose, and just kept his hand there on them for a few seconds.

“C’mon, not so many stars, by they’re still good ones,” Scout urged.

Sniper hesitated for a moment before he pulled the shades off, folding them, hanging them on his shirt. His gaze fell down below for a moment, then up to the sky. He had pretty eyes. There were some wrinkles around them, the kind of thing that meant Sniper either laughed a lot, or spent a lot of time in the sun, or a mixture of both. Scout realized he’d probably have his own pretty soon with his lifestyle. He found a lot of things funny.

Sniper briefly glanced at Scout out of the corner of his eye, then back away again.

“You’re staring,” Sniper said quietly, gaze falling to the tents and stands as they started on the inward down curve.

Scout looked away, also out at the area they’d just been in. Only a few places still had lights around them. The area was mostly dark, the tent blockings around them lit mainly by the gently changing lights on their ferris wheel. “You should take your shades off more,” Scout said.

Sniper shifted. “I use ‘em at work,” he replied. “They help me shoot.”

“You weren’t at work today, or any of the other times we went and did stuff,” Scout replied, tipping his head against the back of the seat, rolling his head to look at Sniper. Tiredness was creeping up on him, not in a cranky way, just in a lazy way.

“Why would I take ‘em off?” Sniper asked, not looking at him.

“So I can know where you’re lookin’,” Scout shrugged. “And because you look good, and they hide your face.”

Sniper’s eyes fell to his own knees, which he gripped in both hands. “Maybe that’s the point,” he said, voice rumbling against the lowest volume he could manage.

Scout kept looking at him, then back up at the sky as they made it to the upper half.

“Scout, I have a question,” Sniper said, eyes locked downward.

“Mm,” Scout hummed.

Sniper took a breath, exhaled. Looked over at Scout, made eye contact, maybe for the first time without the barrier of tinted, reflective lenses in the way. “Can I kiss you?”

Scout wasn’t sure what his expression was in the following several moments of silence, but it made Sniper tense, paling under the colorful lights, visibly sinking at roughly the same speed as the car they were in as they passed the apex.

“I’m sorry, I just—“ he started to stammer, backtracking as Scout did his best to mentally try and sort out the can of worms that was just opened. “I thought, we—ferris wheel, you sayin’ that I’m, I’m good looking, and—“

Scout saw the way he was fidgeting, fiddling, hands no longer able to be stuffed in his pockets to prevent it.

“—and you won those stuffed animals for me s’well, and you’ve been taking me to dinner, tryin’ to make me laugh, and—“

He couldn’t quite look at Scout, and maybe he could never quite look at Scout, and maybe that’s why he never took his sunglasses off. Maybe that’d why he kept his hat’s brim low. Maybe that’s why he held things up near his face.

“—and I just assumed, I, I’m sorry, I’m godawful at picking up the clues on that sort of thing, and maybe I just imagined things, I—“

“Do you wanna?”

Sniper’s rambling stammered to a halt. He didn’t look at Scout. “What?”

“Hey. Look at me.” It took a minute, but he did, tipping his head up first, eyes following a second later. Crow’s feet. “Do you wanna kiss me?”

Sniper managed the tiniest of nods.

“Out loud,” Scout added, voice level.

Sniper took a breath. “Yeah. Yeah, I’d like to,” he said.

Scout tilted his head up for a second. They were headed back up and over again. Stars.

“Yeah,” Scout decided. “You can, if you want.”

Sniper had to take a second to process that. But then, slowly, he placed his hand on Scout’s shoulder. He second-guessed himself, hand moving instead to rest on Scout’s cheek, tilting his face only on accident, and then Sniper was kissing him.

It felt nice. Scout reached up slowly so as to keep from scaring Sniper away, an arm wrapping up around his shoulders.

By the time they pulled away, they were at the bottom of the wheel again. Sniper managed to smile at him, so visibly relieved and contented that it almost left Scout reeling, the sudden input of reaction making his head spin.

“You taste like fries,” Sniper informed him quietly.

Scout laughed.

Pairing : Jack x Reader, Clint x Reader Lyle

Warnings : Lyle is his own warning lol. Injury, hospital setting.

Part 31 in Deadly Secrets.

By the time you got out from behind the bar, Laura was out the door, the girls father quickly passing her. “Carl, help with the bar.” you told him as you ran for the door.

“Y/N!” Jack called out.

“I'll call you!” you told him, shoving the door open. “I need to be there for Laura!” And with that, you were gone and Lyle was hot on your tail.

Jack sighed as the door shut behind you both. “So.. what were you two doing in the back room?” Carl wiggled his eyebrows.

“Fuck off, Carl.” Jack grumbled.

“Oh shit, you got rejected!” Jack shot him with a glare that could kill. “Guess her and Clint are getting serious. Or is it the blonde? They were looking pretty close before..”

“Get out of my bar.”

“Not yours yet.” Carl teased. “Boss lady says I help, so I help.”

“I'm her boss, and your not fucking helping right now.”

Pouring a shot of whiskey, Carl placed it in front of Jack. “I'm helping more than you give me credit for, buddy. Drink.”

You stepped outside and looked around, Laura already off in the distance, and you turned hearing a siren as the deputies car shot past. “The hospital..” You mumbled as your eyes followed it. “They’re going to the hospital. If we run fast, we can-”

“Get in.” You turned confused, and Lyle motioned towards a car. You gave him a weird look, but he chuckled. “It’s mine. Get in. We’ll drive.”

You hopped in, and shut the door behind you. Lyle moved around to the other side and pulled open the door. “You drove to the bar?” You asked, as he sat down and pulled the door shut and reached into his pocket.

“So?”

“Lyle, you live up the street. I can see your building from here.”

“So?” He gave you a pout. “Look how nice my car is. Why have a car if I’m not going to drive it?”

You glanced around the vehicle, and it looked to be in immaculate condition, for an older car. “You drive a firebird?” He smiled at you. “Not what I expected…”

“You better not be harping on my car.” He scowled.

“Lyle?”

“Yeah?”

“Just drive to the damn hospital. We can discuss what I expected later.”

He rolled his eyes as he put his key in the ignition and started it up. “Okay, but.. It’s nice, right?” He glanced over as the engine roared to life. “And it’s not my only car.” He winked as he hit the gas and peeled out of the parking space. “Oh yeah, almost forgot. Seat belt. I drive like a bat outta hell.” He grinned and did a u-turn that had you glued to the door next to you while he laughed.

When you finally stepped out of his car at the hospital door, you were cursing him. “I wanted to visit the hospital, not get admitted to it!” You slammed the passenger door shut, and he just laughed as he went to find parking. “Asshole.” You mumbled, a smile playing on your lips. Suddenly, a man blurred past you, and a moment later so did Laura.

You hurried in after them, following to the Emergency room front desk. You heard him mumble “She’s with me.” as Laura and the man hurried off, but when you tried to follow, you were stopped at the door.

“Sorry, Family only.” The nurse gave you a sympathetic smile.

You watched as Laura disappeared down a hallway and sighed. “She alive and well?” Lyle asked as he stepped up to you and put an arm around your shoulder.

“I dunno. They won’t let me in. I hope so, though.”

Lyle nodded and looked through the little window on the door that was in front of him. “Maybe Clint knows.”

“What?” You looked up at him, then followed his line of sight as he pushed the door open. “Clint!?”

He turned, and so did the doctor he was talking to in the hall. “Sorry, Ma’am but it’s f-”

“I’m his girlfriend.” You blurted out without a second thought. The doctor looked to Clint who nodded. You grabbed Lyle by the shirt as you moved forward. “He’s with us.” You said, before the doctor could protest. You cupped Clint’s face in your hands and looked him over. “What happened to you?”

He chuckled softly, and shrugged, but winced. “Tripped on a root, like an idiot.”

You furrowed your brow at that. That didn’t sound like Clint at all. He practically grew up in the woods around that creek, and he was always careful. “And what? Fell off a cliff?”

“Yeah, actually.” He laughed, and your eyes shot up to his again. “It’s not that bad. Just a banged up shoulder, twisted ankle. Some cuts and bruises. I won’t be driving you around on my bike for a bit, but otherwise, I’m fine, Doll. I promise.”

“Find her?” Lyle asked.

“Yeah. She’s alive. Unconscious, and not doing so good, but alive.”

“Where’s my brother, Laura said he was with you?”

“That’s what I’m wondering.” The deputy came walking over and the doctor gave him a nod before walking away.

“He was talking to the feds while I got checked out. They asked him to take them to where we found her, since they don’t know the area.”

“Where’d you find her?”

“Followed the creek for a bit, hit the next town, asked around there, no one saw anything, so when we walked back, we moved through the woods. Maybe, a mile from the next town, there’s an old hunting cabin. I remember finding it when I was younger, so I checked it out. Small cliff nearby, she was at the bottom of it. I think she might have fell off trying to get to help.”

“Jesus…” You breathed out.

“I saw her, and rushed towards the edge while I called for Garth, didn’t look where I was going, and tripped on a root. Hit a few rocks and things on the way down.”

“Stick around, Sheriff might have some more questions for you. I’m gonna grab a few guys, see if I can find this hunting cabin. You didn’t find anyone else out there?”

“No sir.” Clint shook his head. “Just her.” He gave Clint a pat on the shoulder and gave Lyle a nod before he headed off down the long hallway to where you figured the sheriff was checking on Bradley.

“You sure you’re okay?” You looked up at him, worried.

He chuckled. “I’m fine.”

Lyle put a hand on your shoulder, and you looked up at him. “You should call Jack.” You furrowed your brow. “You said you’d update him. Let him know they found her alive, so he can let everyone know.”

“Right.” You nodded, and looked to Clint again.

“I promise, I’m good.” You gave him a smile and headed back out into the waiting room and out the door. It wasn’t until you were outside that Clint’s smile fell, and he sighed.

“You didn’t just fall, did you?” Lyle asked him.

“No.”

“Rugaru?”

“Yeah.” Clint nodded. “Soon as she was checked in, and the doctor was looking me over, Garth took off to find the Winchesters to hunt him down. He mentioned you told Sam you might know who it is?”

“You didn’t see who it was?” Clint shook his head, and turned, motioning with his head. Lyle lift up the back of Clint’s shirt. “Shit..” he mumbled, taking in the scratches across Clint’s back.

“He hit me from behind. Never saw ‘im. Doc said it looked like I fell off a cliff and hit every jagged rock or tree branch on the way down, and since there is a cliff there, and I did have to get down it to get to her, I said that’s what happened.” Lyle let Clint’s shirt fall back down and Clint turned back. “Who is it?”

“Could be John Robinson. He has a mistress who told him something that upset him. Likely an unwanted pregnancy. Could have triggered the change.” Lyle shrugged.

Clint nodded. “Make sense.. He’s older than me, but when I think of it, never knew him to have a dad.. Just a mom who was a little out of it sometimes.” Clint thought for a minute.

“I’ll see what I can find. Take it easy, kid.” And just like that, Lyle was gone. Clint sighed, and left the area, heading out for the waiting room so he could sit down.

Jack was leaning his ass on the back counter of the bar when his phone rang. He had been calling people back ever since you ran out, and Carl was serving up drinks as people came in to wait. “Hello?”

“Hey, Jack.”

He felt a twinge in his heart at the sound of your voice, but he did his best to ignore it. “So what’s going on? They really find her?”

“Yeah. Yeah, Clint and my brother found her, somewhere near the creek, way out of town.”

“She alive?” Everyone went silent as they waited.

“I haven’t seen her, they won’t let me in, but Clint said she was alive when he found her. Unconscious, and not looking so good, but alive.”

Jack smiled at that, and one of the guys at the bar turned to everyone else. “She's alive!” The bar erupted in cheers of a job well done, everyone clapping each other on the back and they all finally relaxed.

Carl looked to Jack. “Yeah, Carl. She’s not doing so well, but she’s alive.”

Carl grinned. “Round on me!” His arms went up, and everyone cheered again.

“He does realized you and Lyle have been paying for the drinks, right?” You chuckled softly.

“And now he’s paying for them. And if he keeps up his shit, he’s paying for a few more.” Jack shook his head and looked down. “Ca-”

You cut him off, without realizing. “I need a favor.”

“What is it?” Jack kicked out a foot, nudging a napkin that had fallen on the floor.

“Clint says he’s fine, but he also said he fell off a cliff.” Jacks eyebrows furrowed at that, and he waited. “I left my purse and everything at the bar. I’m not sure when I’ll be able to get back, but I-”

“You want the rest of the day off to take care of him.”

“Yeah.”

Jack nodded to himself. “Yeah, no it’s fine. I mean, I don’t have to worry about money today, right. It’s all coming out of Lyle’s pocket. So I’ll just bill him for your full days work, not like he’d care. I know you need it.”

“You don’t have to do that.”

“I do. Because if I know you, you’ll take tomorrow off too.”

“Jack.”

He stood up straight, and turned to grab a bottle off the shelf. “Don’t deny it. You’ll dote on him, like you did when I came back from that ski trip with my brother and had a broken foot.” He sighed. “Or when I got the flu. And then you got it because you wouldn’t leave me alone. Or-”

“I get it, Jack. And you might be right.”

“I’ll leave your purse in my desk. If you can’t swing by later, I’ll get Carl to drop it off.” He felt bad for being standoffish, but the last thing he wanted was to see you and Clint together more than he had to. “You told him to help, and all he’s been doing is getting on my nerves, so I’ll be more than happy to send him out for a bit.”

Clint watched you hang up and sigh before you started for the doors that lead back inside to the emergency waiting room. He smiled when you spotted him sitting near a wall, not too far from the doors that he had come out of. He saw you glance around, likely looked for Lyle, so he quickly changed the subject before it could start. “So, you’re my girlfriend now?” He chuckled at how red your face got and you bit your bottom lip.

“I just-”

“Do you want that?”

“I- well, yeah. But I-”

“Then I’m all yours.” he smiled.

“So we’re..?” He nodded. “And I guess I’m staying at your place again tonight?”

“I sure hope so.” He pat the chair next to him. “Sit.” You blushed again as you sat down next to him, his good arm went around your shoulders and pulled you close. “So, what did Jack say?”

so after high school, sweet pea and cal had to part ways due to circumstance. sweet pea, being the devoted young man he was, was unable to bring himself to apply anywhere out of state, whereas calliope still had a tight hold on York and was desperate to venture on from Riverdale. it was a heartbreaking decision, being in another country completely without any friends she had made, and alone once again. and she hated it. and she wanted to call him every day but couldn’t. she dated once - he was second year, but decided to change his major and needed the psych course for his co-op down the line. he had pretty blue eyes and a warm smile. they had coffee twice, and he kissed her before she left the car. it was very sweet, and soft, and while cal enjoyed it, it wasn’t what she was looking for. not the same passion, or aggression, or need. she used pea as an excuse for a few different boys that approached, and after the second week, she decided that pea wasn’t going to stop some of them, so she had resorted to bringing her RBF out and put headphones in. to avoid falling into old habits with her very 420 friendly roommate, she spent most of her nights in the library or at the gym.

fangs and sabine are getting married in a week and cal’s super excited for her best friend, but is also nervous. sweet pea would be there. they hadn’t spoken in years. not a single text, not a single call. and she was scared at the person she had returned to would remind him of why it was better that they had parted ways. he didn’t need to know she still thought about him every day, and still has every photograph saved on her laptop. but then her body warms at the thought of seeing him. to see if he had kept his curl, or if he had cut his hair. did he still wears so many god damn rings? so the day she lands and makes it to the boys house, she changes into a pair of ripped jeans and heels and walks her ass straight to her favourite bar

he caught sight of the blonde hair from his office upstairs; curious, he stepped outside and looked down at her while she talked eagerly with teddy. after five minutes of wondering, he joined them on the main level; sensing his arrival in the quiet bar that tuesday afternoon, she caught his eyes and then paused, turning to face him fully. her hair was just as long as always, and maybe a little tamer, not as wild, but her eyes - those fucking blue eyes still wrenched his gut and gave him butterflies. her features had sharpened, complimenting the equally pointed RBF she had perfected over the years he was sure, and her body - well, sweet pea vividly remembered what he happened to favour the most about her body. his cock twitched in his pants, but pea remained collected.

Being a girl

So, I’m not trying to be one of those girls that hates on men, because I have some very good men in my life and I’m in a “man’s career” but… I feel this is a little more of a coincidence and I just want to put forth my feelings on this. I’m a 24 year old girl, and yes my life is very crazy, things are constantly changing, being single on top of that makes it even more hard to understand and difficult to not get caught up in some sort of drama. I work long hours almost every day of the week including overtime, when I have a day off I make sure my house is clean, my dog is fed, my bills are paid, my laundry is done, and that I’ve gone shopping so there is food in my fridge. When it comes around the night time hours I admit I do like to go out with my friends and have a drink, or two, or 10. However the night goes. Every single time I go out.. no matter if I’m wearing skinny jeans, shorts, a sweater, or a tank top showing my shoulders.. my dad makes a negative female comment about my outfit. “Change your clothes you look skanky.” “Cover your shoulders this is why men won’t take you seriously.” “How long did you spend on your hair? You could have taken the dog out for a walk with that time.” “Why can’t you be a normal female and stay home instead of these night time troublemakers.” Since when was a female not allowed to wear what she wants? Who the hell cares what a man thinks of me? It’s not like I’m walking outside with my ass cheeks hanging out and bandaids over my nipples. Im not asking for anything, I want to look nice for myself. Growing up I’ve always admired tattoos, the day I turned 18 I got my first tattoo and the addiction has grown from then. I have a quarter sleeve and I’m working on a half sleeve. I spend my own money on my own tattoos and I love them. I sat through the pain and I chose to do so. It drives me batty when people say “you know that’s on your skin forever?” Or “ what about on your wedding day in your dress? You can see them!” Well no way?? If I get married, that’s ONE day out of my life, if I thought the tattoos were ugly I wouldn’t have spent the time, money, or pain to have them. When I’m actually out with friends, I’m normally the only single one because most of my friends are in long term relationships. I was in an abusive relationship for six years, I am NOT in a rush to be in another relationship so soon, I’m cautious and know what I want, and right now I’m living for myself. So of course I’m singled out by the douchiest people, if I’m at a bar, bowling alley, movie theatre, you name it. They talk about their money, their cars, how much they workout.. business cards are tossed my way, Ive even been asked to straight up go home with them. My gosh at times you should see how angry they get when you say no in a nice way. I don’t lie and say I’m involved with somebody, I’m not rude at all. I politely say I am not interested at this time and I get called names, told to fuck off, all kinds of shit it’s insane. Outside of my personal life, at work I work with mostly men. I’m in the medical field as a first responder. I basically put my life on the line for yours, no matter the time, day, weather, holiday, or situation… I am there to help you in the emergency you are in. I pay for my own things, I work my ass off, I have a nice car I bought myself, I went to school for my job being the only female and the youngest at that in my class. I have to work twice as hard physically to match with a male’s physical strength or remotely come close, but that never has stopped me and I try my hardest at everything I do. With that being said, it blows my mind how some people that you work with out in the field will treat you. I’ve been privately messaged by numerous coworkers either from my company or another that works hand in hand, and I’m always pleasant and civil, but as soon as they step over the line into hitting on me I softly decline in a respectable manner and that is that. Apparently that can go two different ways or maybe even both. You 1.) are a hoe 2.) a bitch or 3.) BOTH. I’ve talked to other females in my profession who are good workers, take their job seriously (as they should), and are very respectable people who have all claimed the same has happened to them. They’ve all been looked down upon as a person that “sleeps around” or they’re “bitchy.” First of all, I can’t speak for every female but I have never messaged a man to initiate a conversation for any reason in this occupation. Not even over work. It’s mostly men to my knowledge that pursue (I’m not claiming it’s just men but the majority.) Yet WE are the loose ones, the ones talked down to for being a “whore.” Let me just give one piece of mind: I did not have an easy childhood, my life growing up was a struggle and I spent growing up taking care of a suicidal abusive family member. I went to school for years as the only female in my medical class and also the youngest and weakest but I was given the same amount of work both physical and by text, and passed with no special treatment. I use my education that I worked so hard for in my current job every day to save other people’s lives if they deserve it or not. I put my uniform on every night, zip up my boots, strap on my radio, climb in the truck and spend ridiculous hours on hours awake, drink copious amounts of caffeine to stay quick and on my feet, and I witness some of the most terrible things as well as some of the most beautiful things in life as well as death. Every. Single. Day. I absolutely love it. If you think, for a second that you can tell me what and what not to wear, try to degrade me or make me feel like I am just some stupid female who’s purpose in life is to be some sort of floozy, if you think it’s unattractive for a female to have tattoos or to go out and have a few drinks, if you think you can stop me from becoming the beautiful, intelligent, and powerful human I am growing to be, please take a second to sit down and fuck right the fuck off. I will never quit, I will never stop learning, I will continue to grow, and I will live my life the way I want to. Women were not made to live by your rules or to be viewed as sexual objects. Have some respect.

i dont normally put trigger warnings but this post speaks a lot about food/binge eating. and i kinda just went off on one haha. talk of money.

im sitting in the office writing this at work cus my boss told me to do the holidays but im done but i need to vent, the store is abso quite and i just need some time to myself.

im still gonna be struggling til the end of this month but its not as bad as its been through jan which has been fucking HELL because ive obv been doing my manager job and having all this worry/stress ontop ov it.

i paid my rent +fee and i have enough to cover my bills! !!!!

i bought a bus pass but im gonna probably walk to work when the weather gets less horrible as i acctually didnt mind the walk after a while and i felt a lot fitter adding that exercise into my daily routine. before dropping out of uni, i got quite bad for being the type of person who would go to the gym once or twice a week and justify a lazy existence because of that. the bus is terrible but its the difference of walking 6 miles and being out of the house for like 12 hours a day or whatever and taking a 10 minute bus journey from straight outside my work almost to my front door.

i ordered new earphones becus mine are not working. they were like 6 quid but so worth it. i went into my favourite cosmetic shop and got some nice stuff for my face as its got so flaky and dry and sore. i bought some new combs, not a great expense, no but the last thing on my list of cheap stuff when i didnt hve any money. my hair is short and tuggy and thisll help. i went into a cheaper cosmetics store and bought a lot of cheap shampoo/conditioner, sanitry products n whatnot. i never used to stockpile these so i ended up at the beginning of jan with nothing, i bought a cheap bar of soap for my body and used some of my flatmates stuff (but its expensive so i did it like once a week max). its so nice to have product. its something i never throught was something id miss cos theyre so essntial but i got to the point where i couldnt really afford them because i had bills going out and had to keep my money for other things.

ive consumed more food/calories in the past day than i probably have in a couple of years - apart from at christmas. last night i bought a milkshake after work. it was thick and tasty and amazing. on my walk home i also bought a bottle of irn bru, which wasnt as good cus i forgot they changed the receipe but ive not drank fizzy drinks regularly in a

i thought it was gonna be enough to fill me up but my body suddenly decided it really wanted to binge and treat myself.

i odered a med pizza with two sides and cookies when i got home from work. i just stuffed my face and ate it all. it was glorious. i went out with my flatmate a bit later and i bought quite a big shop with fresh food but also a lot of tinned/frozen things bcus i know i will be poor at the end of the month. i binged on salad items at like midnight. i ate two eggs, a whole freaking cucumber and pack of tomatoes, along with half a red pepper, a carrot, some spring onion and spinach. fresh food never felt so good. i had fruit and a bagel wiv creme cheese for my breakfast this morning. ive not had breakfast in about 6 months because when i started uni i got so stressed i couldnt eat in the morning and then i couldnt really afford to. and i gave myself some money today to get some lunch. i planned on buying one of those salad meal deals but i ended up at subway, i only got a 6 inch tough cos i think i may have died if i got anything bigger. i did however get 3 cookies on offer, ive only ate one as of yet but the other two are staring me down right now. i was so tempted to go to mcdonalds but i would have binged too hard. my poor stomach which i mentioned before had became a lot flatter probs due to lack of food/a lot of walking is so bloated. i was wearing quite a loose fitting shirt to work and you can just see this big round boi now. customers will think im pregnant fuck me. but its a good bloat. but as i also mentioned ive gained a bit of weight and in the past 24 hours ive probably put on about a stone haha. i probably lost around three inches from my tummy in the past coupla months and now its about 6 inches rounder haha.

i honestly dont regret it. i think if this was a regular thing and i did stuff like this a lot i would probably be different and feel horrible but it was great. i loved all this good food.

im gonna go back to reasonable spending now/eating now. i have some spicy carrot soup i made a fortnight ago in the freezer so im gonna heat the rest of that up tonight for me and my flatmate, if i even feel up for eating and tomorrow i will probably enjoy a cheeky but healthy fruit salad for my working lunch.

sucks my brother took out a loan but im splitting his repayments and we can both afford to pay it off, im sure you can even pay it off wholly early (for a fee though) so i could even do that in a few months time cos i already know ill be due a tax refund, i paid so much tax @ my last jobs before i quit them for uni and ill be taxed here but i didnt earn over the threshold due to my break and il be due loadddss back, so we will see.

ive been poor recently and not been living on the best of foods (will probably explain why ive gained weight) but i have been mostly cooking from scratch using frozen meat/fish/veg and tined foods (thank god for bootstrap cooking, am i right???), on occasion i bought fresh veg or meat but thats it. the rest of the food i was eating when i was poor and well still will be eating for the next month was and i try to limit this because i know its really unhealthy has been instant ramen/noodles/soups/rice, breaded frozen meat and frozen garlic bread and chips. snackwise its been like those 10p packs of buiscuits and ive also been baking when i can mostly using my flatmates stuff. if my flatmate was making food and had excess id sometimes have some if she offered but thats been it.

Manipulative Boss

Sorry for the rant but this needs to be put out in the world regardless if this post is seen or not. (And I just read through this and just wanna say before or if you read this, there are so many bad things that happened to me (maybe not too serious) but bad enough to feel like I’m worthless. These are just a few) (plus I only worked there for 2 weeks sooooooo)

I worked at a Japanese resturant, owned by Chinese people, that recently just opened. Most of his employees are foreigners and most of them are on some sort of visa, meaning they need work to pay either their visa or student debt or bills or whatever. Meaning that he can easily manipulate these people because they probably are either too scared to say anything or unaware of the legal working rights. I am the only Australian born that he decided to hire (for idk what reason).

Through out the 2 weeks that I worked there, I have been (I guess I’ll use this term very loosely) “abused”.

1) (Boss’ wife) first actual day of working, new building just opened all restaurants are trying to engage to public to eat at their resturants. One of The resturants hires belly dancers for their entertainment and it was literally right outside my work. Part of my job was to greet and welcome walkby people to engage them in the restaurant. Bitch Boss’ wife tells me that I should be welcoming these passabyers that, first, aren’t even looking in the restaurant’s direction, second, are all facing and hve their undivided attention to the belly dancers, and third, that’s fucking rude. And so what she does is threaten me saying “IF YOU DONT WELCOME THE CUSTOMERS IM NOT GOING TO PAY YOU THE RATE I SAID” first of all this wasn’t even in the job description when I applied, and not even in the job interview no one said I’d be embarrassing myself in front of a store trying to bring in customers because your store is so shitty that customers won’t wanna come in on their own. Then she says after like 10 mins :” IM GOING TO GET ANGRY AT YOU” first of all “you’re going to get angry at me”, bitch please, I might be the youngest employee (18) but you can’t scare me like that, I’m not a child, and second, you getting angry that’s putting toxic on yourself and not doing anything to me other than me hating your plastic ass face more than I already do.

2) (Boss) he expects change too quickly. New job, little experience of waitering, I’m still getting the kinks and handles of everything. One mistake I did was I served out a drink without spiking the receipt before handing it out, meaning the other waiters won’t know if it’s done or not. And yes that’s my fault 100% and I’ve learned from it. But one time I’m pouring wine behind the bar handing it right out to the customer that’s legit 2 tables away from the bar. Come back in 2 seconds and he scolds me saying I did it wrong again straight away. That was my first time back talking. I said I literally just came back I was about to do it. But here of course pick on the youngest employee tell him everything he is doing wrong

The most serious thing, when I found out my pay would only be $15 an hour (for an 18 year old may I remind you), I was confused. So I called up fair work australia (a government agency that help workers that are unsure of their working rights) and asked what is my legal minimum wage for an 18 year old as a waiter, they told me that my legal minimum wage is higher that what I was getting paid. So next day I go talk to him and asked why is it I’m getting paid below the minimum wage, and the fact that he has the nerve to tell me “that is what we agreed on during the interview” As from the title you probably can tell that he is manipulating me. Thank god for my good memory and also that I constantly complained about this, during the interview I asked (like I ask all of the people when I go for an interview) “as an 18 year old how much would I get an hour?” He told me “oh I’m not sure I think it’s 15$ per hour I hve to go check” so my stupid mind thought he was gonna get back to me. The fact he has the audacity to tell me that I agreed on $15. GTFO (oh and he also blamed me for asking for my legal rate saying I’m not thinking about the team because it’s hard to pay the whole team and you’re only asking for more) well if you can’t pay us the legal rate or at least me DONT FUCKING OPEN THIS BUSINESS

As you can tell where this story is going, the fact that i was probably the first person from his 2 resturants to challenge his ego and call out his illegal bullshit, he goes ahead and fires me the same night (tonight). And dw guys ima report his ass and at least try to bring his ass down. Probs is too much, but he manipulated me and made me feel so fucking bad I had to call up a counseling hotline cause I felt so much like shit I needed professional help

What I’ve learnt: IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION OR A PROBLEM AT WORK OR ANYTHING, DONT BE AFRAID TO ASK BECAUSE IF YOU DONT DO ANYTHING ABOUT WHAT YOUR CONCERNED ABOUT NOTHINGS GONNA HAPPEN, ( and probs end up regretting that you didn’t say anything in the first place)

AND SECOND DO NOT WORK FOR ANY TYPE OF FAMILY BUSINESS. I never wanted to until now, I’ve only wanted to work for major cooperation like McDonald’s or KFC cause their shits professional and at least have legal system to do things. The only reason I accepted this job was cause it’s been so long since I got accepted into a job and I was desperate enough to accept this manipulative job.
