Julien Castelli & Myra Castelli (née Moulton) 🤍
Myra Castelli age: 28 career: prestige diploma in biology, was working as a biology teacher for hs students, employment status is unknown now. traits: family orientated, high spirited, art lover & alluring. fav color: beige & yellow hometown: san myshuno zodiac: taurus relationship status: married to Julien for 2 years
Julien Castelli age: 30 career: unknown but somehow, he's a millionaire does own a few businesses around the city. Word on the street is that he is the leader of the well-known gang La Cosa Simstra traits: active, smug & art lover fav color: red? hometown: san myshuno but he moves around often zodiac: who's asking?
Myra Castelli, one of the eldest daughters of the Moulton family. Daughter of Lauren & David Moulton, she has always been a second mom to her youngest siblings and takes pride in it. Myra grew up in middle class her mother being a best-selling author & father owning his own construction company she felt the need to set an example for her youngest siblings. Always longing for a family of her own she often fell into the wrong guys, but soon shocked her family when she told them she met a guy and they were getting married in the next month, she was super confident about it and being 26 at the time who could tell her anything? When her family asked would he be coming to meet them she simply responded that he's super shy and he'll be coming soon to meet them. Myra always did so well in school, always at the top of her class & it was no shock when she graduated with an honors diploma, she then went to go teach highschoolers biology but soon quit after she met her new husband but why? that's a question we would all like to know including her family. Soon after the wedding which happened in a private setting according to Myra, she set sail to her honeymoon where she told her family she would be visiting puerto rico & she was so excited to finally see where her mother's side of the family has come from. After this she announced to the family, she would be moving to puerto rico and her new husband is so on board, and she would be visiting soon. The Moulton's didn't see her for over a year until she came back with a pregnant belly & her new husband who came to visit the whole family, weird but the Moulton's are a welcoming family, so they let it go. Myra is pregnant with her first child & is five months, she's very excited to finally meet her niece Chaya & have playdates with their daughters. With her nerves to the sky, Myra finds herself nervous to be questioned by one of her siblings especially her younger sister Leya who can get anything out of her, or would she ask how they were able to afford the most expensive penthouse in the district?
Julien Castelli, some would describe him as a jack of all trades, others would not describe him at all and even run away to the sound of his name. Who is this man? that's something we would all like to know. A Casanova known to spend lots of money on beautiful women, has finally settled down & a new member to their little family on the way. Safe to say the women were in shambles finding out that Julien was off the market, so he says... but can be seen quite often in "meetings" with different people, the topic of said meetings are not known. There's not much to say about Julien because he is very secretive, but after some digging from Leya & Priscilla (his sister in laws) & possibly a drunk conversation between him and Zane (Myra's little brother) Julien is a leader of well know and notorious gang called La Cosa Simstra. Who are well known for illegal activities among the streets the police are suspicious of them and built a case for about 5 years but soon closed it because no evidence was found and there was no proof of these "activities", but the recent return of Julien Castelli has made the crime rate go up which might open that case back up. Now is this the reason why Julien left to Puerto rico for a year with Myra? we will never know. What we do know is Julien was raised very good and into a wealthy family. His father used to run the gang back in the day before he passed away in a shooting, the shooters were never found & this may or may not have made Julien the man he is today. Julien is not all bad though, he helps a lot in the community gets rid of who he needs to & runs things his way. A prime example of this is when magically Myra's youngest brother got into one of the biggest record label in San myshuno after denying him. Now we can't stop hearing Zane's music on the radio. I guess a few good deeds cancels out the bad right?

CHICANO ART MOVEMENTS visits: “Greetings from Home” 2023
Surveyed “Greetings from Home” at Moulton Hall on the Chapman University campus. This multi-artist showcase by the Escalette Collection displays different home representations impacted by environmental, governmental, and spiritual elements creating vibrant conscious and subconscious memories.
Tumblr media
(Detailed view of the works by artist Ana Serrano and Laurie Steelink, respectively.)
The mission statement declared that “‘Greetings from Home’ exhibits artists who utilize ceramics and paper sculptures to portray their hometowns, recreating their upbringings through whimsical imagery and captivating color schemes.”
Tumblr media
(First unit of Ana Serrano’s “Building Series,” 2012.)
It was stated by the Escalette Collection that “using cardboard and colorful acrylics, Mexican-American artist Ana Serrano is an architect. Recreating Los Angeles’ low income, Latino neighborhoods, Serrano spotlights ‘the spirit of an unplanned city,’ which captivated as a youth.”
Tumblr media
(Second unit of Ana Serrano’s “Building Series,” 2012.)
I learned that Ana Serrano’s “Building Series”works were included. Within Serrano’s series (2012), my favorite was the middle casita with its wrap around garden & cool tones frond door which was a homey touch of this unique little block.

Noble Bachelor, Part 3
can’t sleep! cannot focus on projects. curling up in bed and liveblogging letters from watson
It was after five o'clock when Sherlock Holmes left me, but I had no time to be lonely,
(a) “what do you do when holmes goes out, watson?” “wait for him to come back”
(b) holmes left him alone with supper for minimum 3 hours. i don’t know what i’d do in that situation. your roommate orders enough Uber Eats for five people. you definitely aren’t inviting the neighbors over. maximum, the case you’ve undertaken brings the count up to four, and that requires bringing a lady back from the presumed dead. the pheasant will go bad. what do you do.
"It is the purest accident. I cannot allow that there is any humiliation. "
it is kind of sweet for holmes to reassure a guy he clearly has boundless contempt for
The lady, I think, you have already met."
“I think” god bless
So then I promised to wait for him to the end of time and pledged myself not to marry anyone else while he lived
sigh. i am not immune to extravagant love confessions
"I saw it in a paper," explained the American. "It gave the name and the church but not where the lady lived."
you know, that is awkward. i can’t blame the guy for just showing up at the church
So Frank took my wedding-clothes and things and made a bundle of them, so that I should not be traced, and dropped them away somewhere where no one could find them
FRANK YOU THREW THEM IN A LAKE IT TOOK THEM A DAY --
"Then I trust that you at least will honour me with your company," said Sherlock Holmes. "It is always a joy to meet an American, Mr Moulton, for I am one of those who believe that the folly of a monarch and the blundering of a minister in far-gone years will not prevent our children from being some day citizens of the same world-wide country under a flag which shall be a quartering of the Union Jack with the Stars and Stripes."
holmes immediately like ‘case done. how is frisco, anyway? you guys have time?’
being fortunate enough to find the loving couple at home, I ventured to give them some paternal advice
awwwww. it is interesting that he gave them some advice without ever bringing up Flora (that is, the lady doesn’t seem to know much about her when she recollects her side of the story), so it didn’t seem too much like ‘heyyyy, if you don’t have this excruciating conversation, a woman might die for it’
Draw your chair up and hand me my violin, for the only problem we have still to solve is how to while away these bleak autumnal evenings."
cute 🥰 this one was fun!

TALES FROM THE WIP WEDNESDAY CRYPT - NO LODGING FOR THE MAD EDITION
So, guess who finally got some revision done?Hopefully, I’ll be out of this Fucking Lobby Scene soon; I do mean to finish this someday.
Been tagged by @shallow-gravy and @adelaidedrubman these past few weeks; tagging @henbased @florbelles @vasiktomis @deputy-morgan-malone @strafethesesinners @broken-balance-baby @detectivelokis @derelictheretic
“The name, sir?” He didn’t go out of his way to include the honorific, but the man snickers anyways.
“How about Jack Moulton.” He says it like the punchline of a joke. “Don’t think I’ve used that one before.”
Mindlessly Joseph hums an agreement, fiddling with the register. The name on the card is “Adrian Solossa” - what even is that, Spanish? Faith would know, god I miss her - but he could always say he thought it belonged to one of his buddies, if the cops ever come knocking on behalf of whoever’s pocket it was plucked from.
“William Peyton still owns this motel, yes.”
Of course, this is a friend of his boss, the living wax statue. “He does”
The man - Jack draws back from the desk, finally, swiping up the keys. “Tell him Hoyt is here in the morning. Hoyt, not Jack. Let him come by and say howzit.”
He’s got no goddamn clue what the last part of that sentence was, but he catches his real name, the archaic, viking-ish Hoyt. He’s handled people who used fake names before, husbands two-timing their wives and lot lizards from miles up the road, two distinct types of whore. Hoyt’s a bit old to be a gigolo, his friends a bit underdressed; a pimp from out of town and his security, maybe. It would explain why it seems he’s supposed to feel honored.
Jack or Hoyt or whatever he is pushes himself up off the table, the motion a greater mercy than anything Joseph’s seen since coming out here.
“Go unlock the door on 235 and turn the heat on.” He tosses the key to the sunburn, who catches them seamlessly, somehow still sharp. “Bring the floppy haired yokel with you, he can carry the bags.”
He kicks the glass door open unceremoniously, hovering a bit in the threshold to cock his head in Joseph’s direction.
“Do that quickly for me, eh?” One ugly blue eye winks, pleased with himself from the looks of it. “Long night.”
The door falls shut behind him, a draft brushing Joseph’s cheeks as he watches him disappear into the dark.
As quickly as he can, Joseph wriggles his arms into his hoodie and slinks out from behind the desk, some exhaustion seeping back in now that the shock has worn off. Helping his weird friend settle in must mean something to his boss, he decides, and Joseph is doing him a favor working with a scalded hand as is - once this is over, he’ll stay outside to smoke a cigarette. He’ll spend what’s left of the shift doing what he likes.
He’s already halfway to the door by the time the sunburn hauls himself out of his chair with a grunts. A shockwave of chilled, breathable air washes over him as he drags it open, and he sucks it in greedily, even as his body tenses.
This stretch of land always has a languidness to it, but at night the desert drops all pretensions of life and slips into dreamless sleep. In the half-year since he drifted out here, the road has seen no cops, no buses and no cars worth more than 5K. He buys his food from the same place where his coworker puts gas in her car, steals appliances from the Hotel’s stock when his own break down. Every so often, a coyote will go behind the dumpster to gnaw bones or have pups, but they never settle here, no more than the clientele. Joseph is attendant to a dusty, transient purgatory, locked down where the guys he came to Texas with have long since passed through.
He doesn’t know what he’ll do, if something happens to him.

As someone who's deeply invested in comic books, I'm gonna tell you right now; the stories of the creators of a lot of these beloved characters are just as, if not even more intriguing, than the backstories of their characters.
Batman, for years, had only Bob Kane accredited as his creator, and he would constantly talk about being the sole creator of Batman. It took over 70 years for Bill Finger, the man who most people will tell you did most of the work, to even get his name on the comics. And there were other key players in helping shape and co-create that mythos that Bob brought in as part of his slew of ghost artists and ghost writers.
William Moulton Marston helped create an early version of the lie detector -- something you see highlighted in the Lasso of Truth belonging to his character, Wonder Woman. He also was in a polyamorous relationship, enjoyed bsdm, and believed a female empowerment revolution was coming and he was ready for it.
Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster were one of the first big fights to get proper crediting and payment to comic book creators. And, fun fact, you can tell pretty heavily that Superman and Clark Kent were based off of Siegel's appearance; and he ended up marrying the model that Schuster modeled Lois Lane off of, a woman named Joanne Kovacs. Which, you got admit, that's just cute.
A literal cult tried to recruit Jack Kirby because they loved his work so much, and he let them into his house and showed off what he'd been working on, while his wife Ros made them lunch. He also had some nazis call him, telling him they were waiting in the lobby for him so they could beat him up, for having Captain America punch Hitler. He literally said "Okay", rolled up his sleeves and headed on down there, with every intention to beat the shit out of them. There was no sign of them by the time he got to the lobby.
Gardner Fox was a New York lawyer and polymath turned writer. He is the reason why we have superhero teams, having created the very first one with the JSA and later also created the Justice League, and he's also the reason why comics, specifically DC, have multiverses. He's also responsible for being one of the lead writers to have gone to rework things in the Silver Age due to the Comics Code Authority and their rules being implemented. He also created Batgirl and did some of the early writing on Batman as well. This man is a legend.
And these are only like just a few examples, there's so many more out there and it can be genuinely fascianting to learn about them.

SMART BOMB
The Completely Unnecessary News Analysis
By Christopher Smart
August 22, 2023
BORAT AND THE INANE GEORGIA VOTE CONSPIRACY
Years from now when people read about the 98-page indictment in Georgia of Donald Trump and 18 coconspirators they may well shake their heads and say, this couldn't be true, it's too stupid. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis used the state's RICO statue to reveal an alleged criminal enterprise that is so witless it could have been cooked up by Borat: OK, here's what we'll do, in swing states we'll meet at the YMCA or a bar somewhere and get some idiots to commit felonies by declaring they're the real electors. Then Trump will tell his MAGA base to show up on Jan. 6 because, “It'll be wild.” When Congress is thrown into chaos by the attacking mob of insurrectionists, we'll get Mike Pence to count the phony electors and Trump will win. Ta da. OK Wilson, it's slightly more complicated than that, but not by much. Trump doesn't do complicated. You're right Wilson, Utah Sen. Mike Lee is up to his neck in this but is not named in the indictment. He'd rather be lucky than good any day. The big problem now is how to schedule the four separate criminal trials Trump is facing. He's asked the Georgia court to set April 2026 as the trial date, possibly hoping by then he'll be emperor or grand poo-bah and can make it all disappear with a wave of his wand. Poof. Where the hell did that Borat guy get to, anyway?
NEW ANTHEMS FOR REAL AMERICANS
You know, victimhood just keeps getting harder and harder. But luckily we still have real Americans to sing about injustice, like Oliver Anthony who just broke through with, “Rich Men North of Richmond,” that tells it like it is: “Well, God, if you're 5-foot-3 and you're 300 pounds/Taxes ought not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds/Young men are puttin' themselves six feet in the ground/'Cause all this damn country does is keep on kickin' them down.” None other than Marjorie Taylor Greene, champion of angry white people, called it the “the anthem of the forgotten Americans...” We know who the enemies are: welfare queens and woke politicians. Damn straight. It's been viewed 17 million times on YouTube and right-wing influencers can't get enough. It comes on the heels of Jason Aldean's smash, “Try That In A Small Town” that hit home in red states. “Car jack an old lady at a red light/Pull a gun on the owner of a liquor store... Cuss out a cop, spit in his face... Well, try that in a small town/See how far ya make it down the road....” It's a dog-eat-dog world and it's good people are still singin' about it so we won't be fooled by stuff like that “Barbie” movie. We need more Merle Haggard's in this world, “where even squares can have a ball.”
CULTURE WARS — CLIMATE CHANGE, WHAT CLIMATE CHANGE?
As everyone knows by now, Karl Marx was an environmentalist. And according to informed sources on the internet, climate scientists hate capitalism. They say things like the polar icecaps are melting to scare people from buying those condos in Miami Beach with garages full of sea water. The Earth is getting hotter, they cry with very little evidence to back it up. OK, sure, Texas had some record breaking heat and July was the hottest month since the moulton Earth cooled, but so what. The lefties go around yelling, the sky is falling, the sky is falling. But it's just a PR campaign to get Big Oil to invest more money in green energy. It's that whole “New Green Deal” pushed by AOC and her commie comrades in Congress. Luckily, The Heritage Foundation is ginning up “Project 2025” that will propound “dismantling almost every clean energy program in the federal government and boosting the production of fossil fuels,” says The New York Times. Big Oil and conservatives know what to do — they're lumping climate in with guns, gays and abortion. They know people don't trust elitists who want to stick needles in your arms, kill babies, take your guns and make your kids gay. Americans don't want experts telling them stuff. When they want to know the weather, they'll look out the window or turn on Fox News.
Post script — That's going to do it for another week here at Smart Bomb where we keep track of natural disasters so you don't have to. Hurricane Hilary, which became tropical storm Hilary, wreaked havoc across Mexico's Baja Peninsula before it pummeled Southern California and Nevada. Also Sunday evening, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake centered in SoCal'sVentura County had folks wondering if the end had come. But that was nothing compared to Maui, where wildfire reduced Lahinia to ashes in minutes, leaving at least 114 dead and some 800 missing. Well Wilson, maybe we are in End Times just before the Second Coming. In the U.S., 39% of adults say “we are living in the End Times,” according to a Pew Research survey. Here are some of the signs from The Bible that The End is near: deception, famine, natural disasters, the spread of new diseases and war. But not to worry, says Salt Lake City soothsayer Ron Anderson. “The End has always been near,” he said, “if those are the signs.” What do you think Wilson, can The End set us free. It's hard to worry about stuff if the curtain is about to come down. This could be the time to buy that Porsche — after all if The End is near you won't have to make payments. If it doesn't come, well you'll just have to play it by ear.
OK Wilson, we know you and the guys in the band like good ol' American ballads, like Marvin Gaye's “What's Goin' On,” The Eagles' “Lyin' Eyes" and, of course, “Blowin In The Wind,” by Dylan. So maybe you and the guys can take up where we left off with Merle Haggard and his anthem about real Americans. Hit it, Wilson:
We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee; We don't take our trips on LSD We don't burn no draft cards down on Main Street; We like livin' right, and bein' free. We don't make a party out of lovin'; We like holdin' hands and pitchin' woo; We don't let our hair grow long and nasty and dirty, Like the hippies out in San Francisco do. I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee, A place where even squares can have a ball. We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse, And white lightning's still the biggest thrill of all. Leather boots are still in style for manly footwear; Beads and Roman sandals won't be seen. And football's still the roughest thing on campus, And the kids they still respect the college dean. And I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee, A place where even squares can have a ball. And we still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse, And white lightning's still the biggest thrill of all. We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse, In Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA.
(Okie From Muskogee — Merle Haggard)

A Knight of Shadows
This looks like the opening of the first episode of Gargoyles, no lie.
The costuming is... off, and so is the fact that they're fighting in a castle (Arthur, if he ever existed, was a fifth-century Welsh warlord. I.e. he fought more like a Roman than Richard I), but this episode does depict one universal truth: fortresses fall more by traitors than by any amount of besieging.
I can't remember which castle it was, but the English poured molten gold on the head of the guy they bribed to let them in. Gratitude is the disease of dogs, eh?
So I guess Nimue doesn't exist in the DCAU.
Written by Keith Damron
Directed by Butch Lukic
So, younger than Batman? Older? How old are you Bruce?
Yeah, neither swords nor armour work like that.
In some versions of Arthurian mythology, Morgaine le Fay takes care of Arthur on his final ride to Avalon.
Ah, Etrigan. Jack Kirby's least favourite creation, by the way.
That's a bad idea, J'onny boy
Bruce Timm and his background designers sure read a lot of Edgar Rice Burroughs, don't they?
That... does not narrow it down any.
Cold, Bats. But accurate.
Wow, it's just a run of shitty video game depictions this week, huh?
Good going, Etrigan. You gave the old man a heart attack.
...We got Playboy in a DC cartoon.
It's a trap!
This really is the first episode where Justice League turns up the heat and becomes the great series it will be. It's not there yet, but it's coming.
Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster
Batman created by Bill Finger
Wonder Woman created by William Moulton Marston
Animated by Koko

Natural Woman.
Filmmaking power-couple Julia Hart and Jordan Horowitz chat to Jack Moulton about exploring untouched female perspectives in genre films, a fateful viewing of Michael Mann’s Thief, the humbling magic of babies on set, and Letterboxd’s small role in their filmmaking process.
I’m Your Woman puts the gangster’s moll, a classically underwritten character, at the heart of the action. We barely meet the gangster himself in this taut, 1970s-set crime thriller from director Julia Hart and her co-writer and producer husband Jordan Horowitz. Rachel Brosnahan occupies a tense and unusual space as Jean, wife of Eddie, a no-good chap who turns up one day with a very young baby then abruptly disappears, leaving her to raise this unnamed child.
In other versions of the story, we’d follow Eddie to a guns-blazing conclusion, but this is a Hart-Horowitz jam, so we’re quickly on the run with Jean and the baby, and we stay with her. I’m Your Woman is a compelling, unsettling twist on the genre. “What impressed me most … was how well it keeps its cards close to the vest,” writes Mikey on Letterboxd. It’s also an empathetic portrayal of new-motherhood in all its exhausting confusion, where getting a baby clean, fed and sleeping is as much a priority as finding the next safe house. “Despite valuing tension quite highly, Julia Hart still has the wherewithal to let it sit in its more tender and thoughtful moments,” writes Paul. “The ending really sneaks up on you in terms of the specific feeling it elicits.”
Tumblr media
Marsha Stephanie Blake and Rachel Brosnahan in ‘I’m Your Woman’.
Hart and Horowitz have children, aged two and six, who have grown up around film sets. Before becoming a filmmaker, Hart spent her days with other people’s kids as a teacher; her 2016 debut, Miss Stevens, stars Lily Rabe as a high-school educator, but her follow-up films have been wider-ranging, from Fast Color to this year’s Stargirl. Hart credits this genre-jumping to her absolute love of movies. “I don’t have a favorite genre. I love musicals, Westerns, crime dramas, coming-of-age movies, superhero movies. It was so fun getting to learn about how to create musical numbers in Stargirl and how to direct a car chase in I’m Your Woman.”
Horowitz, meanwhile, is known for producing The Kids Are All Right and La La Land. Yes, he’s the “Guys, guys, I’m sorry, no, there’s a mistake” guy. Horowitz is also a Letterboxd member, and a hunt back through his diary reveals the date he first watched Moonlight, along with his wholesome reviews of Julia’s films. “I always tried to remember to log my movies in so many different ways,” Horowitz explains, “and then once Letterboxd came out it was a very easy solution.”
Tumblr media
Jordan Horowitz corrects that famous Oscar mix-up.
Horowitz keeps diligent lists of references for his upcoming films, years before they’re even announced. It’s here that the roots of I’m Your Woman are found, if you’re looking closely: a fateful viewing of Michael Mann’s Thief nearly seven years ago was the primary influence on I’m Your Woman, “especially Tuesday Weld’s character, and the moment where she is basically asked to leave the movie before James Caan burns everything to the ground,” he tells me. “Our hope with this movie was to follow some of the women in those movies that don’t necessarily get the spotlight and shift the gaze of the camera to follow this car as it drives away with her in it, instead of staying with the criminal of this movie.”
Hart picks up the thread, naming Diane Keaton in The Godfather, Ali MacGraw in The Getaway, Theresa Russell in Straight Time. “Those were interesting characters played by incredible actresses but they only have a handful of scenes so I loved the idea of exploring a woman in that world and time but telling the story through her perspective.”
Horowitz defines master filmmakers Sidney Lumet, Martin Ritt and Jonathan Demme as Hart’s “spirit animals”, for their humanist takes in multiple genres. A particular recommendation of a Lumet classic from an Amazon executive changed the way they looked at their writing. “Running on Empty has this great scene where they all sing [James Taylor’s] ‘Fire and Rain’ together. Originally in our script, the ‘Natural Woman’ scene was just [Jean] singing. After watching that movie it inspired us to consider what if the Cal character joins in with her? What happens to the moment if it becomes a bit more of a community moment?”

When talking about their writing process, Horowitz admits that he always has his producer hat handy: “I’m never thinking about writing for the sake of writing. I’m always keeping how we make this thing in mind. Do we have too many extras? Is this location gettable? That can help me when we get into production because I’ve already considered some of those things, but I do wish sometimes that I could just sit down as Julia does and just write.” Once the duo makes it into production, Horowitz admits “[I] definitely put writer mode behind me, to the point where we’ll be on set and someone will ask me something about the script and I’ll be like ‘I don’t know, ask Julia’ and they’ll say ‘didn’t you write it too?!’”
However, Horowitz credits Hart as the “idea generator” of the two. The premise to have Jean struggling to connect with her adoptive baby was always part of the conception of the character, largely based on conversations Hart had with mothers, pre-lockdown. “It sometimes feels like Hollywood sees mothers as a monolith where there isn’t much nuance and subtlety, especially when it comes to negative feelings about motherhood, so they’re often shamed into not talking about them,” Julia laments. “It was really important for me to explore a side of motherhood that isn’t talked about as much and make sure that mothers know that they are seen and heard.”
The decision to have a baby (performed by brothers Justin and Jameson Charles) in almost every scene was a big risk, and not one Hart took lightly. “Movie people can think what they’re doing is very important, but there’s nothing more humbling than when you’re on a whole set with hundreds of people [and] you’re waiting for a baby’s dirty diaper to be changed. It made everything feel so real and immediate, so everyone on set really had to live in the moment and adapt. You prepare, and prepare, and prepare, but you have to throw out so much if the baby is sleeping instead of crying, or crying instead of smiling. I think it’s important to portray babies as real people, because as a society we often forget that.”
Lead actress Rachel Brosnahan came on as a producer many years after the script was already in Hart and Horowitz’s heads, but Hart explains that Brosnahan brought a history and interior life, “more in the wordless moments of acting than in dialogue itself.” Along the way, Jean meets Cal and Teri, who guide her to refuge. They’re the heart of the film, and Hart elaborates on their importance to the narrative: “they have been through the hell that Jean is currently going through and her circumstances force them to go through it again, but this time they have honesty, truth and love on their side. In watching Teri and Cal, Jean starts to understand what real love, family and support are.”

When you examine Hart’s filmography, it’s impressive how productive she’s been in such a short time, releasing four films within five years, with those pre-schoolers under foot. Horowitz makes a comparison to a prolific filmmaker like Steven Soderbergh, who advises to “fail as fast as you can”. Horowitz acknowledges that “I don’t think we set out like, ‘we’re gonna have two children and we’re gonna make four films in five years.’ If we knew that we were gonna do that we would’ve said, ‘wow, that’s a little bit insane, maybe we shouldn’t do that!’” But they did, and the film world is richer for it.
We always like to ask about the film that made filmmakers want to become filmmakers, and Hart lands on All That Jazz. “I’ve always been a fan of Bob Fosse since his [early] work. How he turned moving your body in a way that people haven’t really moved their bodies before into an empire is very inspiring. [Roy Scheider] is also my favorite actor, which doesn’t hurt. He’s so good.” Horowitz, meanwhile, is a huge fan of Back to the Future. “That was the movie when I was a kid that just opened my eyes to the power of movies, to make you obsess and dream about what other movies could be.”
“I remember going with my parents to see Back to the Future Part II on the Friday night it opened and when we got there it was sold out. We saw some other movie, but I was so upset so all I was thinking about was Back to the Future Part II. As we were leaving the movie theater, I saw through the back little window of the screen where Back to the Future Part II was playing and watched the end scene where Marty is standing in the rain and someone comes and gives him a letter. I did not sleep the entire night. That feeling of anticipation and imagination defines the way I like to look at movies and the way they can make me feel.” A subsequent look at Horowitz’s Letterboxd diary reveals that this conversation perhaps inspired him to take a trip back in time the following day.

Can we see some of No Lodging For The Mad? 👀👀
Sure you can!
I’m not sure when No Lodging For The Mad got started, but it’s a very old concept at this point, if a concept that I’m not ready to let go of. I had a “lol what if Joseph got railed by Hoyt” idea that snowballed into making a petty analysis about the two of them as characters - what with Hoyt being very similar to Joseph, just stripped down to the practical levels of application beneath the religious themes and personal history - and my attempts to sort those thoughts out somehow became No Lodging For The Mad.
Keeping in line with that thesis of “Hoyt and the Father are actually pretty similar, in essence” No Lodging is set in a place where both of them have to exist not as leaders of enormous groups chafing against local cultures but as isolated individuals. It’s 1996, two years after Joseph aged out of foster care and followed an acquaintance out of state for a job on a factory farm, which he abruptly left after a month or so. (The owner still owes him $4 of backpay, actually. Why does he remember that?) He then drifted to the receptionist job we find him still in, at a hotel in middle of nowhere Texas near the Mexico border. Enter Hoyt, who’s just left the country in a hurry after some unseen criminal business went wrong and is waiting for the heat to die down before he can leave the US.
For Hoyt, it’s basically a long layover - a little boring, but maybe not a complete bust. For Joseph, it’s a weird period in his life - shakily stable, but aimless, separated from everything he's used to with the exceptions of his faith, his bad memories and the mental issues that stem from those two things. Being away from Georgia has allowed him to detach from those problems somewhat, but they’ve not gone away, and the appearance of one of the most bluntly immoral icons of sin in the entire franchise definitely doesn’t help.
Hoyt (who checks in under the alias “Jack Moulton” but quickly ditches it) is consistently implied to be doing more illegal shit throughout his stay at the hotel. It’s made clear to Joseph that his boss the owner is actually some kind of petty criminal himself, and is 100% willing to let this random foreigner run roughshod over him and his employees for reasons he won’t fully explain. The implications of that would be intimidating on their own, even if it weren’t for the constant suggestion that something seriously wrong is going on just beyond Joseph’s view, not enough for him to freak out but enough for him to know.
Oh and also, Hoyt has brought plenty of rum bottles and coke bags with him, but sadly finds himself lacking a steady supply of sex workers in the boondocks - a deprivation that causes him to single out Joseph for no-strings-attached sex very quickly. Adding to the overtly immoral feel of it, their affair is conducted semi-publicly and with some vaguely transactional undertones. He doesn’t pay him to sleep with him, but he does just keep giving him money for no reason. Whatever it is, it’s definitely not allowed for by the old testament.
All this put together causes Joseph no small amount of mental upheaval. He goes back and forth between justifying his unwillingness to intervene in Hoyt’s criminality to himself with practical reasons, talking himself down from the notion that he’s committing a grievous sin by not just ignoring the man’s wrongs but being aware of them and still choosing to have sex with him, and ruminating on the nature of Hoyt’s evil, wondering how one gets to that point, if they can change. Hoyt, atp far more advanced in his evil and less inclined to develop as a character, is more or less playing with Joseph, dissecting his morals and the flimsiness of them, examining the ways in which Joseph is and is not like himself when he was younger, internally comparing him to Citra.
It’s a creepy little story, which gets its title from the Taxpayers song of the same name. All the lyrics fit this to a T, it’s exactly the sort of song you look for when searching for fic titles. I’ve posted most of the snippets I liked already, but I think these are pretty good too! (Nsfw below the cut)

Milestone Anniversaries Coming In 2021 (Part 1: 1941)
Milestone Anniversaries Coming In 2021 (Part 1: 1941)
As it’s New Year’s Day we thought we’d take this time to take a glance back at the past, while keeping one eye on the future with a look at some of the 80th, 60th and 50th anniversaries occurring this year in the colourful world of comics, decade by decade starting with 1941 and travelling through 1951, 1971 and ending up in 1981. But first, back to 1941. England was already two years deep in…
