Anyway I think once Wendy found out who Maxwell is she'd like. Latch onto him hard. Like she's clearly got attachment issues (refusing to move on from abby or let her fade away), she's already lost most of her family (abby dead, her parents in the real world), so discovering someone related to her was right there this whole time would def cause her to attach herself bad. This could also give her conflicted emotions, considering that Maxwell still dragged her here, most likely dragged her there with the promise of getting Abby back. Her fucking uncle dragged her into the Constant when she was in a desperate position. Many such cases
Tumblr media
#dst#cassie rambles#wendy and maxwell could also be like. anxious attachment style vs avoidant attachment style#maxwell not wanting people to get close because of what happened with charlie + just not liking being around people#vs wendy clinging on desperately to the last living member of her family she has left#you get it. you get me#don't starve#i think that. wendy found out who maxwell was first#like i don't think maxwell. like. in his final speech he mentions that time moves different#i interpret it as ''time moves slower in hte constant''#so it's been way longer for him#so he barely would remember wendy and there's no indication he knew her dad was jack#i mean. i feel like if he realized his fucking brother was there. he would have a bit of a Moment#so. wendy found out they were related before maxwell did#i don't think she'd tell him at first. how the fuck are you supposed to break that to someone?#''hey. i'm your niece. i'm the kid of your brother who you haven't seen in eons. he's my dad. you're my uncle. btw.''#they're tryna SURVIVE here they don't have time for intense emotional moments over discovering their relation#(plus in the fanfic in my head she found out like. at the same time as a betrayal + losing the codex + wilson fucking died kinda)#(so like. there was a lot going on let's not spring that on everyone as well)#however thsi would probably eat her alive.#i imagine in my brain at some point she finally breaks down begging maxwell to explain why he dragged her into the constant#when he KNEW her because he KNEW they were related and he KNEW who her dad was and HE'S her uncle william SHE'S wendy carter you KNOW me yo#DO YOU SEE MY VISION#I'M NORMAL#PLEASE BELIEVE ME#wendy getse to have an emotional breakdown over her family. maxwell gets to freak the fuck out at wendy being his niece#fun for everyone!#anyway. KLEI PLEASE GIVE US MORE ON THE INTERESTING FAMILY STUFF#GIVE ME MORE WINONA AND CHARLIE GIVE ME MORE MAXWELL AND WENDY#PLEASE I'M STARVED

Messy post but if I don’t post now, the season’s gonna be over before my thoughts are out: Charlie (feels like) he’s in a different genre of show than everyone else at the moment, all his scenes and reactions in the first few episodes especially are more sober and serious (to me) compared to everyone else, even if coloured by the absurdity of Sunny, he's taking control of the situation because he can recognize the situation when the others can’t, he’s always seemed more perceptive but now it’s really showing as he’s done with his mom’s shit, he’s done with Jack’s abuse, and all the scenes with Uncle Jack are clearly uncomfortable and (I think) intentionally not really being played for laughs? (unless they really are just making a horrendous writing choice here), but he’s seeing these darker layers, he’s seeing Mac turn down everything he’s ever wanted, raising eyebrows at the cigarette burning, he’s questioning Dennis’ decisions that maybe wouldn’t have him bat much of an eye before (hmm wait, him asking why dennis wouldn’t perform his ex-wife’s dying wish to be buried in the pet cemetery vs Charlie obeying his dad’s dying wish/tradition of his corpse being carried up the mountain 🤔, Charlie and Dennis having similar shared trauma and both being faced with things that could bring those trauma back up this season, perhaps building up to some closure and heart to heart between them in the finale, 🤔 but that's for another post), anyway Charlie’s opening doors, he was the only one who knew what was behind some of the doors, he’s been denied his legacy, he’s starting to notice or show that he’s noticing just how fucked up all their lives actually are, like someone becoming aware of their narrative for the first time, previously living in a comedy, but starting to pull the thread and discovering it's actually interweaved with tragedy... while Frank still sits down for cake and Mac can't/doesn’t want to see what's right in front of him, and Dennis is likely spiralling and etc. etc., he's pulled back the curtain just a tad... while the others are still protected by it, but the curtain’s gonna come down eventually. And it’s not an all at once shift, this has been a long time coming, all happening slowly, nigh imperceptibly, like that post about boiling the frog, if you turn the heat up right away, it realizes what’s happening and jumps out right away, but if you turn the temperature (tragedy) up gradually, it takes a while before it notices, before we notice, and when it does notice, well...
Something about comedy that becomes tragedy the more you think on it. Something about the inherent connection between comedy and tragedy.
Sunny is a comedy. Sunny is a love story. Sunny is a tragedy. All statements true at the same time. But I think the latter might be coming to the forefront (and Charlie might see it coming). (But it’s not a change, not really, it’s same old sunny, because the heat’s always been on, they’re just only starting to really feel it).

Round 2, Match 52: Jupiter North vs. Keishin Ukai
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Submitted kids:
Jupiter North: Jack, Morrigan, Martha, Charlie, Hawthorne, Cadence, the rest of unit 919 eventually
Keishin Ukai: Shouyou Hinata, Tobio Kageyama, Tadashi Yamaguchi, Kei Tsukishima, Hitoka Yachi, Chikara Ennoshita, Kazuhito Narita, Hisashi Kinoshita, Yuu Nishinoya, Ryuunosuke Tanaka, Asahi Azumane, Koushi Sugawara, Kiyoko Shimizu, Daichi Sawamura
Propaganda under the cut!
Jupiter North:
1. “This man is a true collector! He has never once seen something and said no. Jobs? He's got at least 50 and counting. The wildest outfits you've ever seen? He'll buy them in a heartbeat. Wacky ideas? He's never heard of a bad one. Things In Jars? He has a whole room for them, of course. Children? He adopted his nephew and is probably halfway through the papers for Morrigan. I'd bet that he's eyeing the rest of the Hotel, too.”
2. “he’s so!!!! ok so the main character of the series is morrigan, and her blood family sucks ass. they hate her guts and also she has no friends. she is very lonely and believes that she will be lonely until she dies at a young age. until jupiter comes along!!! he’s really the first person to tell her that she’s worth something and that cares about her. and usually he doesn’t patron people (sponsor their education and mentor them) but he’s her patron <3”
3. “He loves his kids so much. He broke the law many, many times and nearly got arrested quite a few times for the happiness and safety of his children”
4. “He’s a gay ginger madman with a rainbow flag for a wardrobe and the ability to see anything you’re feeling. What more do you need?”
Keishin Ukai:
“One day ur a lonely 20-something working at the local corner store, the next ur a single dad and rookie coach to 14 wayward teenagers.”

16 sunny episodes to watch before s16: broken down
Disclaimer, this is the first long post I’ve done, so bear with me, I’m not great at concise thoughts. Also I’m sure this has been done before, but the hyperfixation is quite strong rn, might as well break it down with the information as of Frank Vs. Russia.
Gang gets racist: could just be to introduce the characters, but that is basically throwing new viewers in the deep end, and the gang haven’t been fully characterized yet. Introduction of queer Dennis though, which is shown in 16x04 (Queer Dennis Rules!) and the source of some presumable trauma for Dennis, the mental health of whom seems to be on display this season. And my beloved, the waitress.
Charlie got molested: Origin of fucking Uncle Jack, McPoyles and Charlie’s sisters. Enough said.
Mac Bangs Dennis’ Mom: Dennis “Mommy issues” Reynolds is all that really comes to mind, but perhaps the introduction of Bonnie and Mrs. Mac. Maybe Macden fistfight?
The gang exploits a miracle: Origin of Dennis’ ED and Cricket.
Gang gets held hostage: I know I said McPoyles for the first episode, but to be honest they weren’t to their true levels of insanity yet, and this one brings it full force. and obviously mac’s “i love you”
Nightman Cometh: Jack has been in s16 a LOT so far, and this would help to explain the abuse that occurred to Charlie beyond largely insensitive jokes. If I trusted rcg a bit more, I might say there will be more this season covering Charlie’s trauma, but most likely this episode was picked because it’s a classic that demonstrates the dynamics of the gang.
The gang gives Frank an intervention: Introduces Gail the snail.
The Waitress is getting married: more of the waitress! Dee-Waitress dynamic! Artemis!
The DENNIS system: comes back as the SINNED system in fvr.
The Gang buys a boat: I legitimately have no clue. Maybe they will address Dennis' insane attitude towards women? How he likes the illusion of power over them?
Mac's Mom Burns her house down: A further introduction into the characters of Mrs. Mac and Bonnie, explains how they came to live together. POPPINS?!?
Who got Dee pregnant: Absolutely no idea.
The Gang goes to the jersey shore: They return there in frank shoots, nostalgia for their tainted childhoods that is purportedly the theme of Risk E. Rat.
Charlie Work: So far in 16, Charlie has been overwhelmingly the straight man, in the case of inflation, Mac's relationship with his uncle, and even taking charge of the events in cursed. This episode somewhat reflects that. It's also incredibly highly rated and one of the best episodes, so...
The Gang goes on family fight: Dennis has an emotional breakdown related to his self-perceived inadequacies and extreme reaction to failure, which it can be guessed will feature in DTAMHD.
MFHP: Not only are the events of this episode mentioned in Fvr, as to give context to Frank now being an ally, plus it details mac's relationship with his father, which lurks in the background of shoots, this was the first season-ending, serious emotional catharsis moment, starting a trend that continued with Charlie and his dad in 15, and will presumably manifest for Dennis in DTAMHD. So rest assured, it's probably going to make us cry. Also it's pretty gay, which can only mean good(?) things.

Do you have any headcannons for Race and like what are some of the differences yo unnoticed between west endsie Race vs Newsies live Race? Also I love your page so much!!! Thank you!!!
AHH THANK U SM
ok so i have not seen west endsies yet so i can’t speak on that race (though i’m sure @roideny may have some thoughts if you search through his blog), but: here are some HCs i have for livesies race!!
one of the most widely accepted hcs for mr. racer: he’s a fucking genius.
i’m talking math and science whiz, incredible with numbers, he likes them because 1) they’re concrete and never change and 2) they’re exact, meaning he doesn’t have to deal with the gray areas of essays and personal interpretations.
in canon era i like to think this is why he hangs out at Sheepshead; he’s kind of the teenage expert on probability and that, combined with luck, means he’s pretty good at gambling.
where charlie is jacks brother, race is his best friend. second in command, future leader of the Newsies of Lower Manhattan, and though he’s kind of a goofy jackass he can get scary and has a lot of respect around the lodging house.
i like to imagine he’s about three years younger than jack? so 14 to jack’s 17, and though he’s on the younger side it’s obvious he has what it takes to run the show once jack ages out of selling.
he’s a flirt, through and through. a charmer like none other
i know there’s some differences in how his names play out, but my personal perception of race is: he’s Italian and Irish! italian mom, irish dad- that’s where “antonio higgins” comes from.
i imagine that he grew up with a lot of sisters, i’m talking four or five. big families mean less food and he was hardcore struggling with his family before becoming a newsie; he was forgotten and kind of cast to the side, so when he was old enough (8 or 9), he ran away and found the newsies. i have no basis for this i just like it
he can be quite serious when he’s not just joking around!
he can’t read or write very well (another reason he thrives with numbers, because those make sense to him (i like to think race has dyslexia as well)) but he’s one of the BEST storytellers in the lodging house. running the newsies group isn’t all about strategy or leadership, he’s learned from jack; he has to have humility and show that he cares about the boys, so i like to imagine race would tell a lot of bedtime stories to the littles. sometimes him and jack both do it, but usually it’s racer to go in and make sure everyone’s good for the night
he’s incredibly responsible. you wouldn’t think so, looking at him. he gets in his fair share of scraps but he always knows when to back down and where he’s needed.
i love him so fucking much your honor i LOVE him

do you think dean winchester believes in life after love? Or can he feel something inside him say "I really don't think you're strong enough, no?"
.
I think it depends? Sometimes he weathers deaths okay (obviously sad—usually more visibly upset than anyone else—but managing). Other times he's done things that definitely suggested the answer was "no". Like after Sam's death in season 2, or after he lost Mary and Cas and Crowley at the end of season 12. But then there was season 6 which opened with Sam dead (as far as Dean knew) and Cas AWOL, and Dean was managing with the help of Lisa and Ben.
I think if you asked Dean that, he'd probably say "no", but I think a lot of people would say that if there was just no one they loved left at all. I think Dean typically has people he's able to fall back on when he loses someone. There's also what Dean believes about himself (which is probably that he can't make it without core members of his family) vs what's true, and I personally think that Dean has the capacity to build connections with almost anyone and form a family around himself and rebuild. This is what he does for most of the show after losing family like John, Ellen, Jo, Ash, Bobby, Benny, Kevin, Charlie, Crowley, etc. He just keeps rebuilding. I do think the end of season 12 is a turning point where we see this rebuilding become much harder for Dean—like maybe it's all been destroyed a few too many times and he's kind of like an exposed nerve, and he needs to withdraw to kind of protect the core of himself with just Sam and Cas close to the chest.
This is actually—I think—also probably related when it comes to what I said about Dean and Jack in the prev mail, because look—it doesn't take a lot to see that when they lose someone, Dean almost always takes it the hardest because he loves so deeply, and that must be difficult, and after a while, the idea of opening up your really sensitive heart to yet another person who could be taken away/go darkside must be terrifying to consider bearing yet again. Jack is a lovely kid, but also represents an... uncertainty. His got a really scary dad, a tenuous grasp on a LOT of power, a lot of people after him, etc. Sam is a constant Dean depends on, and while Dean can't depend on Cas to be a team player, he can depend on him to always come back—death never sticks to him. Plus Sam and Cas are already in there and Dean can't just... stop loving them.
I do want to be careful with this ask tho, because I think a lot of people think about the finale when they see an ask like this and think either 1) Dean lost Cas so he wanted to die or 2) Sam could live on without Dean but Dean couldn't live without Sam so it had to shake out the way it did in the finale. I personally reject the notion that Dean wanted to die or let himself die in the end because he lost Cas. Dean specifically says in that scene that he didn't want to die, that he was scared, and thought he'd have more time. I also reject the notion that Dean could never live without Sam—particularly because we've seen him do it (also that's a stupid reason to justify him dying the way he did).

Baby!Jack truthing
Disclaimer; my Jack knowledge is through Osmosis and Canon is irrelevant. Feel free to add on and don't be shy abt commenting rather than tagging <3
~He sucks at pronunciation of names and other relatively simple things but he picks up on large words he shouldn't know Too fast and says creepy things sometimes
~He calls Dean "Dee" or "Deedee" when he learns to write it takes Years to stop writing "Deen"
~he regularly says vaguely horrifying things and Cas takes it in stride So well and the PTA moms Don't
~okay this is projection but if someone says "Your mom is here" while he's in elementary he gets Terrified but its usually Eileen, or Jo, or Charlie, or Jody, or Ellen, or any other woman he knows and he gets used to it eventually. "your dad is here?" Always gets "which one?" Which results in Teachers having to give a small lesson on how a kid can have 2 dads/2 moms for the kids w no clue
~Cas being able to hear his "prayers" saves their ass in a million little ways
~Jack only sort of knows what Mom vs Dad means and doesn't really know theres a gendered connotation to it and tends to just Guess
~He calls his friends parents "(Friend)'s Dad" defaultively, appearance irrelevant
~He loves bows and dresses sometimes, also bee related clothes and cowboy related clothes as he tends to associate each adult in his life with one Specific thing
~Cas makes Dean promise not to confine Jack to primitive human gender or sexuality based norms
~When Claire ("Care") comes to visit he is Ecstatic and she can't get rid of him
~He doesnt comprehend how he is tied to Jody or Donna so its "My Jody" and "My Donna" I think Ellen might be Nana and Charlie and Jo both Aunts but I'm not totally set on that
~Jack loves to sit on Deans foot or ride piggy back style or sit on his hip
~He sits on Cas' shoulder and in his lap a lot
~LOVES dress up
~Dean picks up humming Red Neck Woman (heard it karaoke at a bar once) because of the line about the baby on her hip
~Cas and Jack listen to the worst pop ever, he's a Katy Perry (thats her name right) fan
~Jack likes Sesame Street, Octonauts, and Paw Patrol
~as part of a prank war (Claire started this one) Sam teaches Jack everyword to "The Song That Doesn't End" and everyone is paying the price
I can and Will go on so Please encourage me

To expand on what I said in the last post, where I mentioned how I hate the Supernatural Fandom with a passion, here are some of the main reasons why:
Their belief that you can't criticize any character in the show who is any sort of minority or who has any sort of trauma, and if you do then you're a prejudiced asshole who only hates them because they're a minority/have trauma and who hates minorities/people with trauma
All of the "If you hate Mary Winchester/Claire Novak/Charlie Bradbury/Any Other Female Hunter Character at all, then you just hate women/are sexist/hate strong female characters" posts
The abuse apologism(especially relating to Dean and his relationships with everyone, but especially especially Sam, Cas, and Jack)
The constant glorification, romanticization, justification, woobification, and excusing of Dean and everything that Dean says or does
The constant glorification, romanticization, justification, woobification, normalization, and excusing of Hunters as a whole and Hunting as a concept/institution
The constant glorification of Hunter Characters like Claire, Charlie, Jody, Mary, and Eileen, pretty much just for being reoccurring characters who are minorities, and acting like they're never done anything wrong ever, and saying that anyone who criticizes them for anything is just sexist/homophobic/ableist/misogynistic/racist/etc.
The demonization and dehumanization of supernaturals as a whole and the treatment of supernatural characters in fanfics, especially in regards to making them all be either Species-Traitor Hunters who mercilessly kill their own kind and are praised for it or Irredeemably Evil Villains who are nearly always killed off
The way all of the rps/fanfics/fanart/posts/etc. force SamnDean, Cas, Jack, and a bunch of characters who either barely know them or outright hate them into being their "Adorable Perfect Found Family Who All Live Together In The Bunker"
How they act like all of the unhealthy, toxic, and even outright abusive relationships in the show are "adorable" and "perfect" and "healthy" and whatever, just because the characters in the relationship in question are Main Characters/Popular Characters/Hunter Characters
The way that so many of the destiel shippers treat Cas like just an accessory for their ship and Dean's Walking Angelic S*x Toy/Love-Slave and get upset and act like he “betrays” Dean if he so much as cares about anyone besides Dean(and maybe Jack)
The way that the destihellers harass and bully people who don’t like Dean and/or who don’t ship Destiel, and call anyone who doesn’t ship their toxic ship “homophobic”, even when the person being accused of being homophobic ships other non-straight ships
All of the dad!Dean crap, and how they make Dean be Claire/Jack/whoever’s father, and how they make Claire, Jack, and other Kid/Young Adult Characters into Destiel Children
The way people get so up in arms and defensive if you criticize their favorite character for legit reasons(mostly Dean), and then will sometimes turn around and make up/exaggerate shit in order to to hate on/bash other people’s favorite characters(mostly Sam and/or Cas)
How some of the most popular ships in the fandom, the ones with the most posts and works about them, are among the most toxic, abusive, and disgusting ships in the fandom(eg. Destiel, Wincest, Samifer, etc.)
How the Wincestie and Bibro types like to bash my favorite characters(eg. Cas and Jack) and treat them like shit, and act like only SamnDean matter
How some SamnDean/Bibro/Wincest fans act like Sam and Dean are perfect, and are all annoyingly snooty with their superiority complexes about how “they understand the show and it’s all about brotherly love” and stuff like that, and bash and insult Cas in literally all of their posts and etc.  They will do things like, call Cas insulting and degrading names, and bash him for stuff that is either made up, exaggerated, or that is literally the same as or similar-to-but-not-as-bad-as things that SamnDean have done.
How they make long-ass metas and essays about destiel and homophobia in spn and shit, but refuse to acknowledge almost any of the racism, sexism, ableism, etc. in the show
How said metas and essays about "homophobia in spn" are literally almost entirely just about “Destiel not being canon” and “Charlie's death”, and occasionally “Cas' death”(but only in the Bury Your Gays and "Cas died and didn't get to be with his twu wuv after confessing his feelings!  Waaaahhh! ThEy SiLeNcEd Us!" way, of course, and no mention of how he died spewing bullshit about how "good" and "loving" his abuser was), and completely ignore any of the many other homophobic things in SPN that don't revolve around the Hunter Fan-Faves.
The rampant and disgusting hypocrisy, both with Hunters vs Supernaturals and with Dean vs Anyone Else.
An example regarding Hunters, is how they will say that killing any human, even one who is an abuser or a murderer, is “bad” and “evil” and “villainous”, but killing any supernatural, even an innocent one, is “ok” and “good” and “heroic”.
An example regarding Dean, is how they will say that anything bad Dean did while he had the MOC “wasn’t really Dean” and “you can’t judge him for that”, but then will go on to judge, condemn, and bash Sam and Cas for things they did while they were possessed(Both), soulless(Sam), or had hundreds of monster and leviathan souls inside them(Cas)!
and likely more things that I'm forgetting

Sam and Dean: psychological analysis and headcanons
In response to this anon ask from the 66 SPN Questions:
6. Do you have any psychological headcanons (or canon interpretations) of the characters?
Anon, this is probably not what you asked for. But I started writing, and kept finding more I wanted to say, until I thought--why not just say it all? And by all, I  don't actually mean all--this is by no means exhaustive. But it was a wonderful, self-indulgent opportunity to organize my thoughts on Sam and Dean's psychologies, and even find some new ideas as I was writing, and to put them out there so others can read and discuss. (Always happy to discuss any of this! Inbox is open.)
As a disclaimer, I know most of these thoughts are probably not original and may be retreads of many things fandom has been discussing for years. I'm not claiming to be breaking new ground here. Also, I sorta float backwards and forwards chronologically in my discussion--some parts pertain more to them when they're young, some to when they're older, and I don't always clarify which. Also, these are generalizations! I point out patterns I notice; that doesn't make them all hard and fast rules, because Sam and Dean are each human and complex!
Here's what you'll find below:
1. Core motivations 2. Happiness 3. Approval and secrets 4. Approval from authority figures 5. Need and attachment re: others 6. Sympathy and empathy 7. Walls—hiding vs. performing 8. Need and attachment re: each other 9. Ambitions and goals 10. Normality and monstrosity 11. Guilt and self-loathing 12. Autonomy and sacrifice 13. Personal identity 14. Concluding observation
1. Core motivations: Dean’s purpose is to protect Sam, obviously. Sam’s purpose, though a little less clear, is to save Dean. Sometimes it’s explicit, as in s3 and s9-10. But I think Sam also wants to save Dean, in general, from himself and from the life. It’s why he pushes against Dean’s obedience to their father. It’s why he tells him to get out and go to Lisa after he jumps in the Cage. At a certain point, I think Sam accepts he can’t “save” Dean without changing who he is, so he chooses to stick by him—because at least then he can make Dean happy.
2. Happiness: Dean’s happiness—or perhaps contentment is a better word—is knowing that Sam is safe and alive. Sam’s happiness is Dean being happy. In Sam’s world, things are good when Dean’s good. I think that, conversely, Dean wants Sam to be happy, and Sam wants Dean to be safe, but they both know and to an extent accept that those things are not within their control, so they focus on what they feel they can control.
3. Approval and secrets: They are each other’s north stars, guiding principles, in different ways. For Dean it’s “look out for Sammy,” for Sam it’s “what would my big brother think/do.” Dean doesn’t need Sam’s approval. Sure, he loves it when Sam admires him, but if he feels he needs to do something against Sam’s approval, he doubles down because approval from Sam is not the top priority. He’ll do what he thinks is right, especially to keep Sam safe, no matter what Sam thinks about it. Sam, on the other hand, does crave Dean’s approval and cares very much about his opinion. It doesn’t mean he won’t go against Dean (all the conflict of s1-5!), but it affects him differently. This leads to different kinds of secret-keeping: Sam goes behind Dean’s back to avoid his disapproval; Dean goes behind Sam’s back so that Sam doesn’t interfere with what he thinks needs to be done.
4. Approval from authority figures: Dean does crave approval from others—specifically, respected authority figures. The big one is obviously John. I think in a way it’s Mary, too, when she comes back. But it only applies as long as the person has his respect. Sam doesn’t crave approval from other authorities in the same way, perhaps because his primary authority figure growing up was Dean.
5. Need and attachment re: others: Sam is the only person Dean cannot live without, but he also makes outside connections of a friendly nature fairly easily. He’s the more socially outgoing brother who latches onto people like Gordon, gets friendly with Ash, and forges connections with Jo and Charlie, just to name a few (and Castiel at times—though their relationship is so inconsistent and often convenience-based I hesitate to include it in this category). Though Sam is Dean’s core need, I do think Dean thrives with other friendships. I’m not talking about found family, though I’m well aware of Dean’s tendency to call people “family” quite readily. Honestly, I think this is a manifestation of his craving for connection with others. Dean has an affectionate and playful nature, and let’s face it, Sam isn’t always super receptive to that—so naturally, Dean seeks out people who are. (I think this is also, in some cases, related to Dean’s craving for approval from others). Of course, none of those other relationships come close to the depth of his relationship with Sam, and when his relationship with Sam is at its best, I don’t think Dean really needs anything else to sustain him. But in reality, it can’t always be at its best.
Sam, on the other hand, doesn’t forge outside connections easily—but when he does, they tend to be deeper than Dean’s easy casual associations (even when Dean has real affection for someone, he tends to keep the tone of the relationship light). It’s pretty clear Sam was a loner kid, and I imagine it took him a while to find friends at Stanford, and even though he loved Jessica he still clearly kept many secrets. That’s the thing with Sam—he’s got walls. Dean’s got his own walls, but they’re different. Sam can seem emotionally open, but he protects his innermost self very carefully and rarely puts his emotions out there in a truly open way—even less than Dean does. I think this is a consistent personality trait for Sam, not one born of trauma (though perhaps exacerbated by it at times). In fact, it’s in later seasons that I see Sam finally, in rare moments, let down those walls, with Rowena and Jack. When he’s young, I think this was partially a coping mechanism he developed for hiding his desires/feelings, even from himself, because he was so unhappy with his life. It means that even though he’s an introspective guy, he’s not as self-aware as he thinks he is until he’s older and more mature. He’s very good at self-deception when he’s young, because as a thinker, he can convince himself of just about anything.
To circle back to attachment, what this means to me is that Sam, while he certainly appreciates close friendships and has a lot to offer those he cares about, doesn’t crave friends in the way that Dean does. I think he desires to be understood (this is a natural human need) but he’s much more comfortable with himself than Dean is, and is somewhat of a loner by nature. This means he’s also not (usually) going to be too affected by the status of his relationships with others. Dean is much more volatile and easily hurt by others (this is where Castiel is a great example).
6. Sympathy and empathy: On the surface, Sam appears to be the caring, sensitive brother, while Dean is brash and insensitive. This is a very incomplete picture, however. It mostly comes down to the difference between sympathy and empathy. Empathy is an involuntary response, whereas sympathy is something that a person chooses to express, though that doesn’t make it necessarily superficial—it also comes from an emotional place. Dean tends to be more empathetic, and Sam more sympathetic. Dean, despite his performative walls, is more easily affected on a visceral level by others’ emotions. He is more sensitive, more easily hurt or swayed to anger, and also more easily experiences empathy. This has nothing to do with what Dean thinks is right—it’s another involuntary emotion. He is sometimes moved to express this feeling, but he’s not generally concerned about appearing sympathetic. Sam, with his careful emotional walls, isn’t generally so viscerally affected by others, but he is kind. This is expressed as sympathy, because he cares about others’ feelings, and he wants to be good/morally right. On the one hand, it comes from an intellectual place—“it’s socially acceptable/morally right to express care for this person” (which Dean is less likely to care about)—and on the other, it is an emotional response—“I know what that feels like”—but a more regulated one than empathy, where one almost directly experiences another’s emotions.
7. Walls—hiding vs. performing: It’s interesting that both brothers have their own walls, which they construct as a form of self-preservation, but they have different levels of effectiveness in protecting themselves from outside influence. One difference might lie in what the walls were built in reaction to. Sam built his walls at a young age to separate himself from the outside world because, ironically, it was precisely what he desired, but was not allowed to have. He therefore consciously distanced himself from it, to dull the pain of not having it. The goal of those walls was to have something to hide behind, where he could remain generally unnoticed, so he could conceal his pain from outsiders and even from his family.
Dean took a little longer to build his walls—or at least to consciously do so. He already no doubt fashioned himself after his dad as a kid, and often put on a brave face—for Sam, for his father—when he was not feeling brave. He therefore became accustomed to performing at a young age, and performed many roles for both Sam’s and John’s benefit. He was unconsciously building walls with these performances, concealing his true feelings and desires. Later, I think this started to become more intentional, especially in relations with women/sex partners and especially after the Stanford split, as Dean realized how vulnerable to hurt his sensitive nature made him. It was much safer to perform all the time, and never let his real feelings show. For Dean, even more than Sam, I think he often lost sight of what those real feelings were behind the walls as he tried his best to be the performance he was putting on.
For a visual metaphor, I think of it this way: Sam is a boy at the center of a self-constructed labyrinth. He is almost always able to maintain control over how close people get (except when a few slip past his defenses, at which point he may be susceptible to manipulation). Despite all those elaborate passageways, though, there’s still Sam at the center. It’s lonely there, but he knows himself pretty well at least. Dean is a man in a mask who wants the mask to be his real face. He does everything he can to fuse himself and the mask together. They probably are fused at this point, so it would hurt to take the mask off. His memory of the face under the mask is hazy. He’s afraid, if he looks under the mask, he’ll hate what he sees. He’s lonely because no matter how close others get—and he lets them in close, can surround himself with people—none of them will ever see his true face. But he’s convinced himself it’s better this way, because if anyone saw his face, they’d hate it.
8. Need and attachment re: each other: Clearly, both brothers need each other. Sam’s need for Dean is different than Dean’s need for Sam, though. The way I see it, Dean’s need is one that requires reassurance. Perhaps it traces back to the concern about Sam instilled into him at a young age. I think it was strongly exacerbated by the Stanford split, when Dean realized his and Sam’s desires didn’t align. In Dean’s mind, Sam left once and can do it again—he’s always waiting for the other shoe to drop. Sam, on the other hand, has always been able to rely on Dean as a rock, a constant in his life—to the point that, in a way, he takes it for granted when he’s younger. Not in a spoilt, ungrateful way, but in that way that we, as children, might take our parents for granted—they’re always going to be there, right? That’s why, on the few occasions where suddenly, Sam isn’t sure of Dean’s devotion, the rug is ripped out from under him and he’s completely adrift and distraught—seasons 4 and 8 come to mind. Sam needs to be the center of Dean’s universe. When he fears that that’s shifted, that Dean hates him or has chosen someone else over him, it turns Sam’s whole world upside down. For Dean, the fear is that Sam will leave, but it’s a constant, background worry. For Sam, the fear is that Dean will hate him, but since he can usually count on Dean to be obsessed with him, it only comes up now and again. Only Dean can truly hurt Sam, while Dean is vulnerable to hurt from others—though, as always, the deepest hurt can only come from Sam.
9. Ambitions and goals: Sam is the one with greater needs and ambitions outside the scope of their relationship. For Dean, if he’s got Sam and he’s got hunting, he’s content. His greatest accomplishments are taking care of Sam and saving people, and that’s all he needs. I see Sam as craving other sources of fulfillment, though—academic/lore study for its own sake (the pursuit of knowledge), and a leadership/mentorship role. I thought it was very fitting that Sam finds these in late seasons, with leading hunters against the BMOL, then leading the apocalypse AU hunters, then mentoring/nurturing Jack. Dean has always had (and needed) a mentor/leadership/nurturing role with Sam, but Sam also thrives when he’s able to step into that role for others.
10. Normality and monstrosity: I’m just going to link to this post rather than repeat myself.
11. Guilt and self-loathing: This is something they both struggle with and at times, are defined by, but it manifests differently. I think their Hell traumas exemplify their different brands of guilt: for Dean, it’s perpetrator’s guilt. He knows he did something terrible and feels he can never atone for his past actions. For Sam, it’s victim’s/survivor’s guilt. He may not have done anything wrong, but there’s a certain amount of self-blame, especially for perceived weakness. This is another theme for Sam; one of the main faults he sees in himself is weakness—too weak to save Dean from Hell for instance—and as a result tries to shoulder things alone (killing Lilith, Hallucifer, etc). Sam has a need to fix things, to prove to others and himself that he is capable. Dean, I think, sees his main fault as neediness, but really, it’s a deeply buried sense of innate worthlessness. He was taught from a young age that his brother’s life—not his own—was of the utmost value. He internalized that his life was only worthwhile if he could save others, and has trouble with the idea that he, himself, has value beyond what he can do for others.
12. Autonomy and sacrifice: The above leads Dean to have a very constrained sense of his own autonomy. In general, he values duty/loyalty to others over autonomy (although when it comes to cosmic beings, he’s all about free will—see this post if you want more thoughts on that, and Sam’s autonomy). Often, his desire to control others comes from a place of frustration when Dean feels they are neglecting duty/being selfish. I think partially duty towards others is really a deeply ingrained value for him, but there may also be some buried jealousy at play, in that Dean wishes he could act with more freedom, put himself first every once in a while, but doesn’t know how to. Sam tends to value autonomy over duty (this doesn’t mean he doesn’t believe in any sort of responsibility—he’s willing to sacrifice for the greater good, after all).  This means he also tends to respect others’ autonomy, though we all know he can get plenty unhinged where his brother’s safety is concerned. The theme of Sam and autonomy has been talked to death so I’ll stop there, but you can click the link above if you want more.
13. Personal identity: One of Dean’s biggest struggles is with how much of his personal identity is received rather than self-determined. He is tasked with taking care of Sam and he is trained to be a hunter; these become the foundations of his identity. He says it himself: taking care of Sam is not just what he does but who he is. Then in season 3, his own subconscious mocks him for his lack of originality, styling himself and all he loves after his father, showing that this is a source of deep insecurity. This discomfort with himself contributes to his fear of being abandoned and left alone with himself. He doesn’t know who he is without Sam—or rather, is convinced he is nothing without Sam, which is why he fights so hard to keep him by his side. It also contributes to his general desire for friends, or better, family: people who won’t abandon him.
Later in the series, I think Dean has come to embrace his genuine self more. He’s nerdy and excitable and playful—and I don’t see this is as regression, but rather a healthy embracing of what makes him happy—not tastes inherited from his father. If it seems juvenile, it’s because it’s the first time in his life he’s allowed himself to express and explore these things. I think his relationship with hunting is also healthier; it’s no longer something he does because it’s the only thing that can give him worth. He does it because he believes it’s right and genuinely wants to help people. He has a more complete sense of self, and while it’s still totally tied up in Sam, he has gained some self-worth.
[I should note that basically everything I’ve written about Dean supports the headcanon that Dean has BPD—a headcanon I accepted after I realized this. For some more great writing on Dean and BPD, see this post by @venhedish.]
Sam has always known what he wanted for himself and rejected what was given to/allowed him. Wanting what he couldn’t have, from a young age, helped him develop an individual sense of self, not defined by others. I think it’s this difference in their sense of individual identity that leads some viewers to think that Dean loves Sam more than Sam loves Dean. He doesn’t, and losing Dean is just as huge a loss and a grief for Sam as losing Sam was for Dean. Dean is central to Sam’s life, and he can’t feel complete without him; however, his identity and every desire has never revolved as entirely around Dean as Dean’s has around him, so Sam has a foundational sense of self that even losing Dean can’t completely destroy. It’s what allows him to rebuild in grief and carry on (whereas I have no doubt Jensen’s right and Dean would waste away in the back of a pool hall without Sam). Dean’s central role in Sam’s life never disappears, though, and it is, in fact, what allows Sam to carry on; an effort to honor his brother’s memory, living in a way that would make him proud. There’s continuity in that for Sam; the craving for his brother’s approval and happiness never disappears. Seeking those things is what makes Sam happy, both in their domestic years together before Dean’s death and in the years after. They are both, after all, co-dependent!
14: Concluding observation: Sam and Dean have many similar issues, desires, and insecurities: the desire for a normal life, the fear of their own monstrosity, the desire for love and friendship, their need and love for each other, their desire for approval/to be admired, resentment at their childhood, the feeling of being impure and unworthy, the desire for freedom, issues with bodily autonomy. Sometimes these are seen as the purview of one brother or the other exclusively, but that’s almost never true when you consider canon as a whole. The difference is in how these things are internalized, sublimated, reflected, and expressed for each of them. It makes sense they would struggle with so many of the same things, because their lives are deeply intertwined and they are in the same boat most of the time.

SPN Finale Theory: Part Two
Finale realizations continued--taking off of Part One
Chuck’s Swan Song Finale 2.0 and Cas Omitted
Throughout the show Chuck is still trying to get the brother vs brother end using His own "blunt instruments" by bringing back Lucifer(s7-15) multiple times, giving Dean the MOC(s10), bringing in AW Michael(s13) and possessing Dean(s14). It never works because free will, love and family always wins.
So... all of s15, minus the last 2 episodes, were filled with all the character development we saw develop and arcs that were the product of "running their own race". THEN Cas dies.
Everything Cas represents fades away in ep 19. The last time we hear his voice is corrupted by Lucifer. (But it also canonically confirms Dean loves Cas.) How he changed Dean’s self-worth, renewed Sam’s hope, and Jack himself is all that’s left of Cas to help change the narrative and defeat Chuck once and for all. He died believing this would come to pass because he saved Dean.
You feel the disconnect happen in between Lucifer and Michael’s deaths and Jack becoming the new God. But even with Chuck the writers no longer in power, its reverted back to before Cas ever interfered. Family is back to only the brothers and the plot is back to hunting monsters. The ending for each brother mirrors the finales of the season before Cas meant something to them. Dean got a season 3 finale since Cas meant something to Dean first and Sam got a season 5 finale since Cas didn’t mean as much to him until s6.
Carry On:
Dean’s character has dwindled back down to his car, pie, rock music, and beer of s3. He even loves dogs again as if he’s pre-hellhound death trauma. Sam’s character has dwindled back down to the baby brother that no longer wants to hunt but there for emotional support of pre-s5. Even the damn journal's back and Jenny for some reason.
Dean’s s3 "at least then my life can mean something" mindset AKA before found family-Bobby reminds him it always did and Cas saves him returns. He dies by getting stabbed in the back mirroring how Sam died in s2 which led to Cas & the apocalypse to begin with. Dean desperately tries to accept it and begs to be told its ok for him to die. It’s as if s15 Dean that doesn’t want to die is battling with s3 Dean who always feared but expected he’d die on a hunt. Cas doesn't save him this time. Since Sam went on to apparently live a very hollow, apple pie life where he was mourning his brother the whole time it mirrors s5 Dean’s life with Lisa. Sam builds a family but his wife is just a stand-in, his son is a Dean jr, and all his memories surround the parents and brother he lost. Cas still doesn’t interfere. Sam also needs assurance to let go.
Even heaven isn't post-s5 accurate despite the claim that Jack and Cas built this to be the heaven Dean dreamed of and deserved. Sure, Jan. Cas is supposedly alive and well but it’s not known or is [Omitted]; however, what Cas represents is not in heaven either.
Everything about Dean’s heaven is pre-Cas or pre-apocalypse canon:
Pre-s4 cast of Bobby, parents, and Rufus are the only ones “known” to be in heaven. Leaving out post5 family like Charlie, Kevin, even Adam. Cas witnessed the grief and guilt their loss had on Dean, plus all 3 were already included in s15 (AW Charlie but still Charlie callback). Cas would have had them there, on or off-screen.
Despite Bobby being there as supposed found family, he’s also dwindled down to the Bobby of s3. He doesn’t even get up and hug Dean who he hasn’t seen since s8 which canonically doesn’t make sense for post s3 reunions for Bobby or Dean. You get reunited from death, you hug each other; its the Supernatural law of the land.
Harvelle's is thee bar and only actual setting in heaven instead of Dean's dream of Rocky's Bar circa s14. Which Cas not only knows is Dean’s dream, he stood in it. Cas never went to Harvelle's and the only time it was heaven-related was s5 as a part of Ash's heaven only. Dean never mentions it after.
The heaven beer is El Sol. The same in Dean's djinn dream(s3) AND in the Beautiful Room(s4). Not the beer that they've been drinking in the bunker for years OR the ones in Rocky's that are real-life Jensen's. And not because it's his favorite like in s3/4 BUT because it was his first/with his Dad....that's what we're going with? That's what Dean dreams about? No.
Despite heaven being new & improved, it's actually similar to s5 Dark Side of the Moon heaven. Baby just appears and Dean has to follow the road which can only lead to Sam. Which Cas does witness but...interesting.
In conclusion, episode 20 was unbelievable because it's an illusion of what Sam and Dean's life/fate/heaven would be without Cas changing the story and without Chuck being in charge of it. It's not real. It's a figment of what could have been post-Swan Song. This is exactly why you can watch up to season 5 then skip 10 entire years and still follow the finale. If anything its part 2 of Swan Song that Kripke wanted but didn't get. Jensen knew it. It deleted 10 yrs because it deleted Cas and everything that resulted because of Cas. I have no idea what all was Omitted but I have a feeling the finale was still this s5 nightmare, I’m just thinking maybe it was on purpose.
Cas/Misha persevered despite the 3-6 ep arc role he was supposed to have and continued challenging God's narrative for 12 years. This is why ALL of us that are screaming into the void, can't move on, and hated the finale just so happen to ALSO be Castiel fans or Cas/Dean Girls or Hellers or any fan that saw how Cas's entire arc was the driving force from s6-15. We know #CastielMatters/Energies because without him the show would have died with him as false-god Godstiel. We recognized the profound effect he had on Dean and Sam throughout their character development.
I didn't make any of this up THEY wrote this into being. They wrote the show. They wrote the characters. They wrote the parallels and the very specifically done set design/lighting. We just saw it through a lens that maybe you can't see without being more like Cas. An outsider, self-loathing, trying our best in a world where it’s easy to do our worst, have more faith in love than God, and maybe even be a little queer too. Yes, it was a story that started out as two brothers hunting monsters but they grew up. The whole show grew up and this is NOT how it ends.
