Goodbye Kiss

A little drabble I wrote during my re-read of Lovely War. If you haven't read Lovely War by Julie Berry, do it. It's amazing. Side note: this isn't my OC Hazel.

Hazel wakes up, her nerves already high. Today James leaves for the front. She doesn’t want him to go. It’s a selfish thought and she knows it. How can she watch as he marches toward what could very well lead to his death? No. She can’t think like that. James will make it back. He has to. 

Hazel gets dressed in a daze, barely noticing the world around her. She starts down the street towards the train station, pulling her coat tight around her to block out the cold. Has it only been a week since they met? It seems impossible. So much has happened in such a short time. 

Hazel slips into the station a few moments later, a reprieve from the damp cold. It doesn’t take her long to spot James. The sight of him standing there in his uniform clutching his bags suddenly hits her. This it. He’s going off to war. 

“Hi,” James says, lacing his fingers through hers. “I didn’t think you were going to come.” Hazel squeezes his hand lightly, trying to memorize how her hand feels in his. Who knows how long he'll be gone. If he’ll make it back. 

Hazel forces a smile on her face, hoping James can't see past her façade. “Of course I came.” I love you. Please don't go. How badly she wants to say those words. She can't, though. It's not fair to him. Tears well in her eyes, threatening to spill over at any moment. “I'll miss you,” she finally says.

“I'll be back soon. Promise me one thing, though?” James says, a small smile tugging at his lips. Oh, that smile. What she would do to see that smile every day. “Keep my heart safe while I'm gone,” he says, moving her hand over his heart.

The tears Hazel’s been fighting back finally spill over, blurring her vision. Her hands cradle his cheeks, pulling him close, as she kisses him softly. She shouldn’t be doing this. Falling in love with the soldier boy going off to war. “Always,” she whispers, resting her head against his shoulder as he hugs her tight.

The train whistle sounds, cutting through the air like a siren. “I guess I better get going,” James says. Hazel hugs him tight one more time, wishing they could stay like this forever as she watches him go, taking a little piece of her heart with him.

Conner Charles James was born on May 28th, 1985, to Charles James (a successful architect & businessman) & Glorianne James (née Alderidge), in the affluent town of Harbor, Ohio. He is the youngest of four children, with two elder sisters and one brother. He has been dating his lifelong best friend, Camille Durand, since they were in middle school.

While a happy, excitable person by nature, Conner has many down and downright chaotic times. At 15, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder after experiencing a severe meltdown, during which he scratched his face and arms quite badly, something he has gotten under control with therapy and medication. However, now, with the sudden accidental death of his longtime friend Ryan Warren, and his other friend Mary McKeown telling him that she is in love with him, he begins to forget to take his meds; that, along with the grief and stress, causes the episodes and meltdowns to return, and worse this time. The current supernatural troubles brought on by The Dreamaker, a being his siblings and grandparents have dealt with before, certainly doesn’t help.

The Great War lit a musical fire that engulfed the world

History stands as a witness to the horrors of the Great War, a war that casted the shadows of death all over Europe. Could a destructive force such as the War incinerate a force as fragile as love? Or will love persevere?

Let them start their dreadful wars, let destruction rain down, and let plague seep through, but I will still be here, doing my world, holding humankind together with love like this.

The Greek Gods might be a tad dramatic but they are excellent storytellers and that was one of the first aspects of the books I was intrigued by. How could Greek Gods integrate themselves into the World War era? My dear reader that is for you to see.

By no means are these stories under the guise of a Greek epic, they are simply stories of hearts finding one another and allowing love to blossom during the darkest period of their lives.

After weeks of her being an idea, a memory, a dream, and some bits of paper, here she was, warm and real, holding on to him as if she was afraid to go.

The reality of war is that its life-altering. No one survives those horrors and remains the same. How do two love stories intertwine? There are other powerful forces such as Music and Friendship. A bond is formed and those bonds become shields against the nightmare they are living through.

I honestly do not think I will do this book nor it's author any justice because it was beautiful in every aspect. I've been gutted, my butterflies kept fluttering and my nerves were shredded. It was such a page-turner and such an impactful book.

What I also appreciate is that without dimming the radiance of the main story, the author sheds light on some underlying issues of the time such as White Supremacy and the treatment of Black soldiers which made my blood boil.

Another thing that I respect is that the author did a proper research of the WWI era. Despite it being a work of fiction, she included the names of real life figures and gives an informative summary towards the end of the book. A big applause to you dear author.

The author managed to seamlessly create and balance between the dark atmosphere of the war and the hollow aftermath of it. I could pinpoint the various stages of the war that reshaped the characters.

This book is definitely one of the best wartime books I've had the privilege to devour every page of. The romance is done splendidly and I must recommend this!

Prepare yourself emotionally.
