Mystery Men 4K Review
Mystery Men was just released in 4K from Kino Lorber. This is the first time the film from director Ben Stiller had been available in this format.
This film bombed at the box office upon its release despite the great cast that includes Ben Stiller, Janeane Garofalo, William H. Macy, Paul Reubens, Lena Olin, and Hank Azaria.
I love the film noir style of this unique super heroes. I love Pee Wee Herman’s super power, then again I’m juvenile. William H Macy’s character is cool as well.
Tumblr media
They’re not your classic heroes. They’re the other guys. The hippest cast in history has united for this hilarious and thoroughly original misadventure! When Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear), Champion City’s legendary superhero, falls into the hands of the evil madman Casanova Frankenstein (Geoffrey Rush) and his disco-dancing henchmen, there’s suddenly a chance for the Mystery Men to show what they can do. They’re a ragtag team of superhero wannabes featuring: Mr. Furious (Ben Stiller), whose power comes from his boundless rage; The Shoveler (William H. Macy), a father who shovels “better than anyone”; The Blue Raja (Hank Azaria), a fork-flinging mama’s boy; The Bowler (Janeane Garofalo), who fights crime with the help of her father’s skull; The Spleen (Paul Reubens), whose power is pure flatulence; Invisible Boy (Kel Mitchell), who’s only invisible when no one’s watching; and The Sphinx (Wes Studi), a cliché-spewing philosopher. They become the funniest team of villain-vanquishers ever assembled in this wild and witty superhero spoof.

Bonus Features:
DISC 1 (4KUHD): Brand New HDR/Dolby Vision Master – From a 4K Scan of the Original Camera Negative | Audio Commentary by Director Kinka Usher | 5.1 Surround and Lossless 2.0 Stereo | Triple-Layered UHD100 Disc | Optional English Subtitles / DISC 2 (Blu-ray): Brand New HD Master – From a 4K Scan of the Original Camera Negative | Audio Commentary by Director Kinka Usher | WE’RE THE OTHER GUYS!: The Making of MYSTERY MEN with Director Kinka Usher – Extended Version (30:00) | I’M A SUPERHERO, MOTHER!: The Costumes of MYSTERY MEN with Designer Marilyn Vance (12:00) | INSIDE CHAMPION CITY!: The Effects of MYSTERY MEN with VFX Supervisor Todd Tucker (10:00) | DISCO IS LIFE!: The Score(s) of MYSTERY MEN with Film Music Historian Daniel Schweiger – Extended Version (12:00) | SPOTLIGHT ON LOCATION: THE ORIGINAL MAKING OF MYSTERY MEN (17:40) | Deleted Scenes (19:22) | Theatrical Trailer | Dual-Layered BD50 Disc | Optional English Subtitles
I’m glad that I had the chance to watch this in 4K. The sound and picture quality are spot on. I recommend picking this release up today.

RATATOUILLE 2007
In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau's famous motto, "Anyone can cook." But I realise, only now do I truly understand what he meant. Not everyone can become a great artist; but a great artist can come from anywhere.

Top 5 superheros?
Hopefully these answers aren't too cliche. ;)
#1 - Nightcrawler
Tumblr media
What can I say? Even thought Batman was my introduction to superhero comics way back in the 90's, it wasn't long before my friend started introducing me to X-Men and Excalibur. She was really into Kitty Pryde but I immediately fell in love with this blue dude. (Thankfully they appeared in a lot of comics side by side so she had lots of books for me to read.) I had a pirate phase because of this guy. I watched a lot of Errol Flynn. I have Flaming Carrot comics on my shelf because of that one time he had a FC t-shirt in one scene. He's my rotten soldier, hes my sweet cheese, my good-time boy.
#2 - Honey Badger (Gabby Kinney)
Maybe the only Marvel comic book gal I've ever cosplayed? She's just... fun. I appreciate that even at her young age, she's really been through it. As a clone "granddaughter" of Wolverine, she's got that tragic backstory down pat, but she looked at all that trauma, and how Logan and Laura responded to it, said, "nah" and went on about her life caring about animals and being besties with Deadpool. There's probably a metaphor in there about generational trauma or something, but needless to say, I'm just glad there's a superhero girl out there who wears pants and looks and acts her age.
#3 Spider-Man (all of them)
I know, everyone is so surprised. The most popular superhero in the whole world. XD As a middle schooler, I lived on a steady diet of Gargoyles and the Spider-Man animated series, both of which introduced a lot of (dubious) scientific concepts before my science class got anywhere close to talking about stuff like genetics or cloning. I know Peter Parker is written to be this supposedly relatable everyman, so it's not hard to project on to him, but that means there's a lot of *there* there. I think Spider-Man is also one of the heroes who best understands his position as a symbol. Other characters go about their super-lives, making choices that they think are right, but in the back of his head, I think Spidey is always aware of the fact that kids look up to him, and that holds him to a stricter code than a lot of heroes. He walks this razor thin line and is stressed out about it all the time, and that's what the kids call a complete mood.
#4 Foggy Nelson
Putting up with Matt Murdock's crap is a super-power, actually.
No, but seriously. I LOVE a best friend type (see also: Nightcrawler) who provides that pragmatic (but not gloomy) perspective that other "more exciting" hero types need. They're not just there for comic relief, or so bad things can happen to them when shit goes down, they're essential, and Foggy performs his role admirably in basically every incarnation.
#5 The Bowler (Mystery Men)
Tumblr media
Shut up, I'm putting a Mystery Men entry on here because that movie kicks ass and more people should watch it. I was vaguely aware of this movie when it came out (because of my aforementioned interest in Flaming Carrot comics) but I wasn't in a position to go out and see it. A few years later I picked it out of a bargain bin and it rocked my socks off. Mystery Men's greatest crime is being ahead of its time. It's a pastiche that came out before the world was oversaturated with big budget super-flix. And the Bowler is easily best of the bunch. I have a soft spot for Janeane Garofalo who brings the exact energy this role needs. I love her for being a competent hero who is still flawed and has her own shit going on, and I love that she's just... a woman out there doing her best... FOR REVENGE. I painstakingly made her costume for Halloween one year and literally nobody got it and actually I do not care, it's dope.

The Haves and Hazmats
Hey there, Janeane Garofalo's expedition to Mt Everest. We're nearly done! It's our penultimate episode of Avengers Arena! We'll be done before August! Won't that be a nice feeling? Let's get "No Arcade August" trending or whatever the kids say nowadays.
Anyway, here's the cover:
Tumblr media
This... is actually a pretty all right cover. One of the better ones in the whole series. Visually striking, nice colours, actually symbolic... Yeah, I'm gonna chalk this up to "pretty good"! Dunno if there's much else to say about it otherwise, though. Weird that whoever made these cutouts bothered to get as detailed as Nico's fishnets, but then rendered everyone faceless. You could argue they didn't want to cover it with the orange targets, but, they cover the ones on the chest regardless. Speaking of the chest, the target on Anachronism? Is his weakness his pancreas? Because that's sure not lining up over his heart~
We open with everything having gone to shit from last time. And much like that other issue, this is an unnecessarily gory opening with no warning. Not as bloody as before, but X-23 is covered in radiation burns from Hazmat's suit leakage. It's not pretty. Anachronism pops in and starts hacking into X-23, shouting how Nara is dead because of her. And then Reptil pops in as a Triceratops, bucking Anachronism away from her. And despite her leaking energy and wounds, she manages to be the voice of reason, telling them to stop fighting because that's just what Arcade wants.
Tumblr media
And speaking of King Douche of Child Murder Island, we cut over to where the others are in his base. Despite having just been clocked by Darkhawk last issue, he's still being smug and smirky. Darkhawk is annoyed with this as we are, prompting Arcade to turn off his simulation, but then he begins barfing up a huge amount of water. Deathlocket points her cannon at him, and he amicably sits down and begins keying in a code. But of course it's not the "turn off the game" code, it's the "teleport somewhere else" code. Well, at least he's no longer here.
Meanwhile, Nico is still skimming Cullen Bloodstone across the water. The deal with him is that while he's wearing the ring, he's pretty tough to kill. Without it, he's vulnerable but also a giant unstoppable monster. Nico just shrugs and resumes the drowning attempt. Cammi, another voice of reason, yells at Chase to go out and stop this, and Chase is all "Time is up, this is what needs to happen." Chase is kind of a dumbass, and he crushes Cammi's gun to keep her from interfering. She doesn't need her gun, though, she'll just take his. And she does a martial arts move to flip him, then uses a knife to pry the Darkhawk gem out of his chest.
So while the newly formed Cammihawk is flying off, we cut back to Arcade's lab. Well, with Arcade gone, Apex occupies his chair and begins trying to hack the systems herself. Deathlocket asks the pertinent question: how can they trust Apex to be doing the right thing. Her response is that she wants to escape as much as anyone else, that she's a pragmatist, not a serial killer. I guess that's fair, but I still don't like her, and consider her villain #2 of this whole endeavour. In fact, let's ask Juston what he thinks about Apex's pragmatism~
While Locket goes off to find Darkhawk a drink to wash out all the barfing up he did--seriously, it must've been at least a gallon of fluid--Apex continues her hacking. Which, apparently she needs to do actual typing instead of just getting it done like a technopath would? But while she's in the middle, Arcade calls up and begins feeding her lines. Like, she may be a pragmatic survivor, but how will the rest of the world see her? He hasn't released any footage yet, there's still time to doctor it in her favour--if she wins...
Back on the beach, Nico's done trying to drown Cullen and is just preparing a finishing blow when Cammi tackles her. Cammi tells her she has to be better than this. Because she makes her want to be better. She, who lived in space and was raised by Drax the Destroyer, wants to be better. She doesn't want Nico to be a killer, and Nico tearfully responds it's already too late: she buried Locket and Apex under a ton of rubble, and we haven't heard from them since. And of course, that's when Nico notices Cammi's using the Darkhawk amulet, which she could only have taken from Chase.
There's a brief cut back to the base, showing Apex has taken control of Locket again, shooting Darkhawk with Locket's cannon, gloating evilly about everyone belonging under her thumb while slouching in Arcade's chair. But she's not a monster, you guys, she's just being pragmatic! And the comic ends with the various fights continuing, when Hazmat stumbles out of the woods. She doesn't feel so good, Mister Stark. She collapses to her knees, saying something feels wrong. And then a huge burst of green energy expands out from around her, to trick you into thinking she's blowing up.
One. Issue. Left. I can think of no more fitting critique than that. Like, I could go on complaining about how everything’s gone to shit, and how Apex is back on her bullshit, and the usual such. But we’ve got one issue to go. And that means more to me than anything else that happens in this comic. Next week, we finish this~
