I feel like there's a general misconception that Yōkai are evil & Kami are good.

Like, yeah, they might be 2 sides of the same coin, but I honestly don't think that it's meant moralistically.

For one, if Kami were all good, then wtf was the deal with Susanoo?

Like, I'm not even sure that he was made mortal because he did evil. From what I remember, it was because he desecrated Amaterasu's temple unless I'm remembering it wrong. Not only that, but Amaterasu hid herself away inside a cave & seemed fully prepared to let humanity freeze to death without the sun. Doesn't seem very good to me.

If that's the case, then all Yōkai can't be evil by default. At least as far as myth goes.

The fact that Akuma are specifically specified as being evil, the kanji for it even being in their very species name, suggests this.

Not to mention the existence of Kishin, who are Oni Gods of Protection & are specifically said to be compassionate & benevolent. As they are based upon the Buddhist Pāla.

Then, there are Kitsune, who can go either way.

Can someone well-versed in these myths explain this to me?

Inugami from Grimm

Like the samurai of feudal Japan, this white dog-like Wesen is often bound in servitude to a family. Called upon to avenge or protect in times of dire straights. They perform a ceremony where they bury their victim up to their neck, behead them, then place their head under a bridge. The intent is to leave their victim's soul in eternal peril.

I loved this episode as a whole, but specifically the rituals and traditions done by this wesen

"Protecting a family that they are bound to is not viewed as a choice by an Inugami but rather as something they have to do, so even if a member of said family directly tells them not to kill, they will ignore them and instead dismiss the individual as being "weak." Their code of honor forbids them from ever harming a member of a family they serve to protect, but if they try to stop them performing their rituals, they will use physical force to remove the family member out of their way if necessary."

You know what. Why do we as a touhou fandom not talk about the fact the pc98 songs are canon. They exist. In canon. Akyuu has them documented and has probably heard them. Someone within touhou's universe wrote them. Reimu could probably actually listen to her own theme. Were the songs actually written about the events of those games?? Was eternal shrine maiden written about reimu?? Was love colored magic written about marisa?? I'm going insane

so im not sure if anyones interested, but, i went through quite a bunch of totk critiques by people who were also very disappointed with it and thought id share my favorite videos i found (granted, i only really wachted those that youtube recommened and its mostly .. white men... things like the orientalism problem are not mentioned at all for example, maybe ill update this post if i find any more diverse voices)

i dont agree with every single point and also dont know most of the channels (aside from the big zelda theory guys) so i judged solely by what they mentioned in those videos and the quality of it (like the audio .. bc i cant listen to bad audio)

in no particular order, also they talk about or use footage of the literal ending stuff so if you arent done with the game yet, better leave these for now

(the following one is a podcast thing by multiple zelda theory guys, there some stuff you can skip at the start thats just kidna random things, but the video is marked with chapters)

(theres some mention of some things not making sense, like the sonau only being two, and ithink thats kinda bc the english translation was weirdly vague about that, in the german version its much more directly said that they all died out and only rauru and mineru were left of them;

also mentions of how unfitting it is to call the enigma stones "secret"stones in english might come from a similar thing; in german they where called "Mysterienstein" which would be translated as mystic/mysterious/enigma- stone

just wanted to mention that since the vast majority are gonna play it in english only and the stuff online is also dominated by english)

New Splatoon dev interview came out!

Had a lot of Side Order lore, but I'd like to focus on the line that says Agent 4 is rumored to be "strongest." If this line was accurately translated, that would explain why they were the one Marina wanted as Head of Security rather than Agent 8, someone she both knew better and many fans had previously considered stronger than 4.

Also masked Parallel Canon is a copy of 4, and the helmet Parallel Canons are copies of the copy.

I don't know if I did the perspective well enough, but I wanted mostly to express my feelings and connect to them.

Back in May, and during a Mercury Retrograde...and in fact since fall of 2020, I had been trying so desperately to fight some feelings I had for Tsukuyomi No Mikoto. I don't want to go into the full detail about what they are, but I'm sure one might guess. But I was worried they were wrong. Inappropriate. Gross. Disrespectful. I told myself all these awful stories about what I thought they were, followed by the narrative I've always carried in my head about myself. Back in May, I tried giving away my art I made to Good Will in the hopes of destroying my feelings...but it didn't work. Instead I just felt sad about what I had done. And the feelings are still there. And then I created this disconnect. Then came the dread loop which I'm slowly, pulling myself out of.

I fought my feelings because I saw the damage my feelings for another entity caused. And I became afraid. I was afraid of hurting my friends again and being an awful person. I was also afraid of losing my freedom. But in trying to rip my feelings away, I was disconnecting from myself. So it doesn't matter what other people think or what is correct. These feelings are mine. And they are there for a reason.

For the last several months I had terrifying dreams about Tsukuyomi No Mikoto. Dreams where I'm in a building, a house, or a room hiding from him, terrified. I just feel pure terror. I had to realize it wasn't him I was afraid of, I was afraid of myself.

I don't wanna make any claims about what my relationship with him is or isn't, but I do know how I feel. These are my feelings. Maybe walking with him through a tranquil garden can happen. Maybe he can give a sense of comfort and Serenity. Maybe to him I can be a friend. I do not know. But I just don't wanna run from how I feel anymore, and I wanna stop hating myself so much.

And I also want to learn all I can about Shintoism and give it the respect it is due.
