Some doodles (not shaded/highlighted) of Jerry I made a while ago :)
Tumblr media
I love the thought of Jerry and Summer being super close when she was younger - as stated in the show
Also gave Jerry a bit of a mullet, because I feel like he would have tried having one before getting too self-conscious about it and cutting his hair short again

Comfort Character Tag Game
Thank you to @belovedblabber for the tag!!
In no particular order:
Maedhros (the Silmarillion): Mr. Doomed by the Narrative himself. The way he tries to do good (ceding the kingship to Fingolfin, the union of Maedhros) but ultimately will not give up the oath. He’s an eldest daughter, he’s a diplomat, he’s a war criminal, he’s a survivor until he’s not.
Celebrimbor (the Silmarillion): BABY BOI. Like his grandfather, he is a genius smith. Unlike him, he is trying to share his gifts. He befriends dwarves, he founds a guild, he creates the rings of power out of desire (in my opinion) to help rebuild Beleriand (and also probs for the Creative Challenge and Conceptual Implications of it all. Which. Same). Shame his boyfriend smithing partner turned out to be evil.
Mercymorn (the locked tomb): Eugh! Yuck! She’s iconic. Love to put her in Situations. Especially the “moments of unexpected tenderness between fucked up characters” type situation.
Harrowhark (the locked tomb): Sometimes a favorite character is just a little freak (affectionate). She exploded a man with soup made from her own marrow and that’s only the tip of the iceberg. I cherish her.
Jonathan Sims (the Magnus archives): Another little freak. Sopping fucking wet disaster of a man, but trying to do right by others even as he goes further down the road of becoming an avatar. One of my favorite character moments: burning Jerry’s page even though it causes him physical pain, because it was the merciful thing to do. Canonically likes cats.
Katara (avatar: the last airbender): Baby’s First Blorbo. I latched onto her like a limpet at age 10-12. I loved how passionate she was about fighting injustice. I also loved waterbending; how fluid it was and how creative Katara got with it.
Thanks again for tagging me, it was fun 😊

Dagan-Fuck This; COME GET YOUR IDIOTS!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I liiiiiive!
Also, special notice, my buddy @nyxcharliechaos created a character for this mess, Marion Jane the ultimate Stoner. Since I don’t have any art of my own creation of the character rn, I’m just.. telling people about him, and if Charlie ever posts the art of the character on Tumblr, I’ll reblog it I guess???
As for the other morons. Some of these talents came curtesy of @fanganhunter who replied to one of my previous posts, so thank you to them for the suggestions!
Up first we have Blegh the Ultimate Zombie. Yes, really. He looks like a Halloween decoration, he just came back to life, now he’s in a killing game, and he’s kinda pissed about it. He feels as though he’ll be stuck watching friends die around him again, and honestly he never asked to be reanimated anyways. To him, this is kinda bullshit. He is perfectly capable of speech, but often pretends not to be so he doesn’t have to talk to people
Next is Greg Glacée the Ultimate Mint Ice Cream Defender. He’s heir to a big mint ice cream manufacturer, Mint and Jerry’s, and spends a lot of his time monitoring mint ice cream sales. He has entire graphs ready to defend his family’s company product, and makes a point of only eating mint ice cream. He actually appreciates the reality tv aspect of the killing game, bc it can help promote his family’s company, especially if he makes an impact on viewers.
The Ultimate YTP creator, known only as Froggy, is a shy kid who uses memes to express himself. His videos have all reached high view counts and likes, and are even considered “iconic” online. Froggy has been online since he was a smoll child, as his parents substituted actual parenting with the internet. Thus, Froggy is well versed in memes and internet lingo. Fortunately for him, he actually has an unusual advantage in the killing game, that being that he’s weirdly knowledgeable about every participant with a social media account. How this is, nobody knows
Tia Maxxx is the Ultimate Chalk eater, and will not let anyone forget it. She’s actually tried to make herself known as the ultimate something for years. From Ultimate Dancer to Ultimate Cheerleader, the only title she ever managed to get was Ultimate Chalk eater, probably bc of how… unusual a talent it is. Tia brags a ton to cover her insecurities, and is almost comedically superficial. She tries to create drama as much as possible, since bc it’s reality tv, she think causing drama will give her favouritism with the mastermind running the killing game.
Finally, Ben Smith the Ultimate Protagonist. Your everyday guy plucked right off the streets. Nobody has a clue how this guy is the ultimate protagonist. He’s known for having the personality of styrofoam, and that’s about it.
————
Anyways, feel free to guess who’ll live and who will die I guess???

Blink-182 – [Untitled]
It really does feel like yesterday that I was just unwrapping the CD of this Blink-182 classic, known to many as their [Untitled} fifth effort, and grinning ear to ear about the sound that was about to surround me for the next two-plus years of a standard album cycle. Little did I know, this would be the last studio album Blink-182 would record for eight (!) years, until they returned with 2011’s Neighborhoods. This studio effort was a flawless execution of slick pop-punk hooks, experimental rock, hip-hop beats, and a top-notch collaborative song with The Cure’s Robert Smith. While some longtime Blink fans were disappointed with the final result of this record (that succeeded the bulletproof pop-punk classic, Take Off Your Pants & Jacket), almost all of these fans now point to this album as a seismic shift in the band’s songwriting and offered glimpses as to where they would take their sound for the foreseeable future. This fifth LP was produced by Jerry Finn, and it would also end up being their longest album to date, clocking in at a little over the 49-minute mark. Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker should be looking back fondly on this momentous album today that would find Blink-182 breaking down the silos of what a pop-punk band should sound like, and blow the doors off the hinges in the process. From the now-iconic opening drum beat on “Feeling This,” to “The Fallen Interlude” in the middle of the tracklisting, all the way to the closing frenetic beat found on “I’m Lost Without You,” Travis Barker’s musical blueprint is firmly cemented on this album. On the opener and lead single Mark croons gracefully with the sunny chorus of, “Fate fell short this time / Your smile fades in the summer / Place your hand in mine / I’ll leave when I wanna,” and it makes for a memorable opening statement on arguably the band’s darkest LP in their discography. “Obvious” begins that march towards the darkest of thoughts with a more brooding tone over Tom’s distinct vocal nasal delivery, while the all-time classic of “I Miss You” follows it and features some brushed notes on the drum kit while Mark bellows over the first verse of, “Hello, there / The angel from my nightmare / The shadow in the background of the morgue / The unsuspecting victim / Of darkness in the valley / We can live like Jack and Sally if we want / Where you can always find me / And we’ll have Halloween on Christmas / And in the night, we’ll wish this never ends / We’ll wish this never ends.” The band was growing, both artistically and musically, at an alarming rate, and had come a long way from the band that threw dick jokes into more songs than not. Tom’s iconic “Where are you?” delivery is now a trademark part of their reunion concerts to connect with their fans. Other standouts like “Violence” and “Stockholm Syndrome” showcased the growth that Blink-182 were having at just the right moment in their career trajectory. The pop-punk adrenaline shots of “Go” and “Easy Target” were enough to appease the crowd that discovered the band during the Enema of the State record, while the Angels & Airwaves-esque “Asthenia” hits its intended target, and highlighted where Tom would take his solo project(s). If nothing else, it certainly got their rabid fanbase talking about the band’s limitless creativity. The beautiful ballad of “Always” paired up with “All of This” featuring Robert Smith highlighted a band willing to take more calculated risks in their discography, and not giving a fuck about what the pop-punk purists would have to say about it. Going against (creatively) what most of the Drive-Thru era bands were doing at the time was arguably the most punk rock thing that Blink-182 could have ever done, and for a band that got famous with the lyric of “Well, I guess this is growing up” lived up to the mantra in an enormous way on this LP. --- Please consider becoming a member so we can keep bringing you stories like this one. ◎ https://chorus.fm/reviews/blink-182-untitled/

Remembering Gary Smith, Bruce Gowers and Van Conner
And you thought last week was bad after Jeff Beck and Lisa Marie Presley’s passing, this week there are already three noteworthy entertainers who passed away. Here is my combined remembrance:
Remembering Gary Smith ? - 2023
Tumblr media
Smith and Tanya Donelly
Music producer and owner of Fort Apache Studios Gary Smith has died. Fort Apache Studios was based in Boston and Cambridge, MA from 1985-2002 and then relocated to Bellows Falls, VT from 2002-2007. The music that was recorded at Fort Apache and some of which Smith produced is ground-zero for the Golden Age of Alt-rock: Smith produced The Pixies’ first album Come On Pilgrim at the first Fort Apache studio in Roxbury (read my 4.5 star review of the 2018 re-release here), as well as albums from Throwing Muses, Blake Babies, and Juliana Hatfield. Some of the artists who recorded at Fort Apache include Buffalo Tom, Dinosaur Jr. (my favorite album of Dino Jr. Green Mind), Tanya Donelly, Folk Implosion, The Lemonheads, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Mission of Burma, Morphine, Sebadoh, Elliot Smith, Treat Her Right, 10,000 Maniacs, Weezer, and Radiohead (their first album Pablo Honey). Smith was also involved in other music-related businesses such as concert promotion and music management.

Remembering Bruce Gowers 1940-2023
Tumblr media
Gowers (left) and Queen (right from their iconic music video)
Music video and music TV director Bruce Gowers has died at 82. He was very much a music video pioneer directing tons of videos in the 70s pre-MTV and during MTV from The Rolling Stones, The Bee Gees, Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper, Elton John, Journey, Michael Jackson (”Rock with You” was an early classic video), John Cougar Mellencamp, Rush, Van Halen, Kiss, The Pretenders, Prince (”1999″ is legendary!), and REO Speedwagon . He worked a lot with Queen on tons of their videos including the highly influential “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Even the Muppets parodied it! In 1992, when the song was featured in Wayne’s World and it went back up the charts, the music video combined footage from the film with Gowers’ video, bringing that original video to a whole new generation.
He also directed a lot of music TV shows like Solid Gold (a show I loved as a kid), the MTV Video Music Awards in 1989-1995 and 2000, MTV’s Knebworth special, MTV’s 1993 Inaugural Ball, the 1994 Woodstock concert special, the MTV Movie Awards in 1996-2002 and countless other music TV specials and shows. He also directed tons of stand up comedy specials notably the 1987 HBO special Jerry Seinfeld: Stand-Up Confidential. That was pre-Seinfeld and was his first stand-up special.

Remembering Van Conner 1967-2023

Van Conner interview in Hype!
Bassist Van Conner has died at 55. He, along with his brother Garry Lee Conner and Mark Lanegan co-founded WA alt-rockers Screaming Trees. This news comes less than a year after Lenegan died at 57. Screaming Trees formed in Ellensburg, WA in 1984. Like a lot of people, I discovered Screaming Trees from the Singles soundtrack, which spawned their 1992 hit “Nearly Lost You” (read my 5-star review of the 2017 re-release here). A few years later around the time their song “All I Know” was all over rock radio, I saw them on Lollapalooza ‘96. They played early in the day and flew under the radar, but good show. In 2020, Lanegan released his memoir and there were more than a few stories about Van (read my coverage of the book here). After Screaming Trees broke up, Van performed in several bands, as a session musician and reportedly was a computer programmer. It also needs to be added that Van was the bassist for the live lineup of Dinosaur Jr. from 1990-91. Van was also a featured interviewee in the 1996 Seattle music doc Hype! (read my blu-ray review here).

Episode 510 - Jerry Saltz
Pulitzer Prize-winning art critic Jerry Saltz joins the show to celebrate his new collection, ART IS LIFE: Icons and Iconoclasts, Visionaries and Vigilantes, and Flashes of Hope in the Night (Riverhead Books). We get into the ways his book chronicles tumultuous transformations in the art world in the 21st century, his late start (almost 40) as an art critic and how his lack of art history training affects his writing, the works of art that inspired his writing, and the transcendent joy of Jeff Koons' 43-foot-tall topiary puppy. We also talk about how a critic can try to avoid the sclerosis they're all liable to suffer, why he's the least reliable critic of Matthew Barney, why he thinks some critics are holding back on negative reviews, what it's like to attend 25-30 gallery shows a week (with his wife, the great NYT art critic Roberta Smith) and what it meant when pandemic lockdown hit. And we discuss his 35-year friendship with the late Peter Schjeldahl, his attempt at getting up to speed on classic books, his disdain for cynics and 'knowers', the artists he missed the boat on, and how art saved his life.
