Israel launches website on Jews from Arab and Muslim countries
By bataween on 12 December 2023
The Israeli Ministry of Social Equality, in association with the Yad Ben Zvi Institute, has launched a website to coincide with the annual commemoration of the departure and expulsion of Jews from Arab countries and Iran.
The site is divided into several sections. Some are yet to be completed. Experts have been asked to contribute a potted history of each community. A section called ‘issues’ will ask ‘Why did Jews leave?’ and ‘Were Jews neighbours or strangers?’
Here is an extract from the website’s ‘About’ page:
On the 25th day of Sivan 2014, June 23, 2014, the Knesset passed the law “A Day to Commemorate the Departure and Expulsion of the Jews from Arab Countries and Iran, 2014: The law set the date for November 30 – one day after the historic decision of the United Nations on the establishment of a Jewish and Arab state in the territories of the Land of Israel – as a date to mark this day every year. The purpose of the law is to “set a day to mark the rights of the many Jewish refugees who were displaced, expelled or fled from Arab countries during and after the establishment of the State of Israel” and to instill in the national and international consciousness the process of the exodus and expulsion of Jews from the Islamic countries where they lived for hundreds of years.
The immigration of the Jews in the middle of the 20th century from Islamic countries is a process that changed the face of the Middle East and North Africa beyond recognition. This process took place in several separate waves of migration in a relatively short period of time of about three decades – from the end of World War II to the mid-1970s. The result of the immigration of the Jews and their actual expulsion from some of the countries, was the emptying of those countries of Jews: in one of them the presence of Jews was greatly reduced, while in others, it disappeared completely.”
The gallery contains photographs that have to-date not been widely circulated.

"Fund Gives Aid To German Jews," Kingston Whig-Standard. June 24, 1933. Page 20. ---- Thousand Acres of Land in Palestine Given for New Settlement ---- MONTREAL - Twenty-three thousand children are being educated in schools of Palestine with £185,000 budgeted for the cause of education. There are kindergarten, public, high and technical schools but the crowning achievement, according to Leib Jaffe, managing director of the Palestine Foundation Fund, is the Hebrew University on Mount Scopus, the cornerstone of which was laid while guns were being fired in Palestine during the Great War. Art, philosophy, biology and mathematics are some of the subjects taught along with studies in tropical diseases, oriental knowledge and Semitics.
Mr. Jaffe made reference to the Wolfsohn library with its 260,000 volumes and to the 42 periodicals in Hebrew which are existent in Palestine. The Hebrew theatre, "Habimah," where as many as 3,000 gather to listen to noted musicians and to actors filling their roles in such operas as Samson and Delilah, plays an important part in Jewish Palestine. The great miracle of all, believes Mr. Jaffe, is the revival of Hebrew with 95 percent of Jewry in the country able to speak the language.
It is planned to settle German Jews on 1,000 acres of land which the Jewish National Fund is ready to set aside for the purpose, Mr. Jaffe said.

The Hamas War for the Total Destruction of Israel – What’s Next?
Featured image: rocket fired from within Gaza into civilian area inside Israel   Does Hamas have a legitimate reason to attack Israel, and does Israel have a legitimate reason to respond in kind? Regardless of where one stands on the Israeli/Hamas war, it is a terrible thing, there is seldom much of anything good about war – and yet, sometimes it is necessary. On October 7th, Hamas (again)…

Jewish Work Village
On October 3 , 1934 George van den Bergh, one of the initiators of the Jewish Work village , stated “Then perhaps a simple stone will be placed here with the words ‘Here stood the Jewish Work village Nieuwesluis.’ Then may all passers-by […] behold that stone with reverence” after that, James McDonald, High Commissioner of the League of Nations for refugees, drove the first pile for the Jewish…

Turkey's Erdogan slams West over refugee policy
Tumblr media
Ankara (The Times Groupe)- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has expressed concern that underdeveloped countries shelter more than twice as many refugees as developed countries, blaming them for having used the global refugee crisis for advertising purposes.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan says developed nations are hosting 2.7 refugees per 1,000.
According to United Nations figures, high-income countries host 2.7 refugees per 1,000 people, while middle- and low-income countries host 5.8 refugees. In a video message for the Global Parliamentary Conference on Migration on June 20, Erdoan said that those who use refugees as advertising material bear no responsibility for the deepening humanitarian crisis.
Turkey welcomed 3.6 million Syrian refugees fleeing the conflict in Syria and did not reject anyone who crossed its border because of their ethnicity, religion, culture, disposition, or sect, Erdogan declared “We are the country that has been hosting the most refugees in the world for the last seven years,” he said.
“We have opened our doors to millions of people who have been persecuted in the last 500 years, especially the Jews who fled the Inquisition. Our brothers in the Caucasus and our compatriots in the Balkans always took refuge in Turkey as a safe harbor when they were in trouble,” he noted.
The COVID19 pandemic has forced more people to leave their homes as a result of economic problems, Erdogan stated, noting that the number of migrants worldwide has reached 275 million, the number of displaced persons is approaching 85 million, and the number of refugees is close to 30 million.
Erdogan also criticized Greece for “persecuting, robbing and even murdering” refugees and said Turkey bears the real burden of the problem.
“Almost every day, we witness the plight of refugees who were persecuted, robbed, beaten, or even murdered by the Greek security forces. In fact, countries like us, which are neighbors to crisis areas, bear the real burden on the issue of migration and refugees, not developed societies that have a loud voice,” he said.
The whereabouts of tens of thousands of Syrian children “who took refuge in Europe, who were abducted, and what their fate” was are unknown, Erdogan noted, since nearly 30,000 refugees, mostly women and children, died in the Mediterranean in recent years.
President Erdogan congratulated all the institutions that supported and contributed to the conference, expressing his pleasure to host parliamentarians in Istanbul, the crossroads of civilizations.
Parliamentarians with different political systems and ideas benefit from the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the president said.
In addition to allowing parliamentarians, who represent our people, to share their views and experiences, the union also contributes to the development of solutions to global problems, he said.
In his address at the conference, Parliament Speaker Mustafa Şentop said the phenomenon of irregular and forced migration has become a global problem. “The issue of migration is an issue that shows us that the destiny and future of all humanity are common,” he stated.

Israeli Occupation Forces cheer as a Palestinian neighborhood is destroyed to make room for a so-called “buffer zone” that will permanently displace Gazans from their homes, and make room for more illegal Israeli settlements.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whether it’s euphemistically called a “buffer zone” or a “purification” process, please understand that Israel is illegally displacing Palestinian families from their homes. Temporary buffer zones will eventually become permanent Israeli settlements. This is land theft, plain and simple. This is what settler violence + settler colonialism looks like.
If indiscriminately killing civilians and intentionally destroying the homes of noncombatant civilians isn’t a war crime, it should be. Regardless, Israel needs to stop, or needs to be stopped.

Following revelations that the U.N.’s Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA colluded with Hamas in Gaza, 12 countries have withdrawn or paused their funding to the agency at time of writing, with more likely to come. However, there is little discussion as to why an agency set up as a temporary measure to aid refugees from Israel’s 1948 War of Independence should still be giving relief to the descendants of Arab refugees 75 years later.
Interestingly, it is not generally known that UNRWA was actually established to help refugees on both sides of the conflict—both Arab and Jewish. Initially, UNRWA defined those for whom it was responsible as “a needy person who, as a result of the war in Palestine, has lost his home and his means of livelihood.”
This definition included some 17,000 Jews who had lived in areas of then-Palestine conquered by Arab forces during the 1948 war and around 50,000 Arabs living within Israel’s armistice frontiers. Israel took responsibility for these individuals and by 1950 they were removed from the UNRWA rolls. This left some 550,000 Palestinian Arabs—according to a New York Times estimate in Dec. 1948—under UNRWA’s authority.
At the time, there was no internationally recognized definition of what constituted a refugee. In 1951, the U.N. Refugee Convention agreed on the following definition:
A person who owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion is outside the country of his nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country; or who, not having a nationality and being outside the country of his former habitual residence as a result of such events, is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to return to it.
This definition certainly applies to the 850,000 Jewish refugees who fled persecution in Arab countries after 1948 and mostly made their way to Israel.  Returning to those countries would have and still does put their lives at risk.
The burden of rehabilitating and resettling the 650,000 of these refugees who arrived in Israel was shouldered by the Jewish Agency and American Jewish relief organizations, such as the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. Together with Holocaust survivors from Eastern Europe, they were shunted into transit camps called ma’abarot in appalling conditions.
At the time, the American aid earmarked for Middle East refugees was supposed to have been split evenly between Israel and the Arab states, with each side receiving $50 million. The money to take in the Arab refugees was handed over to UNRWA, while the United States gave another $53 million for “technical cooperation” to the Arab countries. Thus, in effect, the Arab nations received double the money given to Israel even though Israel took in more refugees, a large number of whom had been expelled from Arab countries.

But this guy is honestly as cold as fuck.
“If one person dying is a tragedy in a war, then what is a million deaths? Nothing at all.”
Um, I think it might mean something to those 999,999 innocent people and their families.

“Over 50 Internees Freed To Work on Canadian Farms,” Windsor Star. May 28, 1942. Page 1. ----- OTTAWA. May 28. More than 50 "friendly aliens” interned in the United Kingdom and brought to Canada for confinement have been released to work on Canadian farms under arrangement with British authorities and the Canadian Immigration Department, it was stated at the internment operations branch today.
The placing of such men on farms follows an earlier move which placed a number of them in factory employment.
Farm jobs are arranged for the released men through the immigration authorities. When a man is released for farm work he must remain on the farm to which he goes first and report to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police once a month. If he leaves the farm for which he is released or violates any of the conditions on which his release is granted he may be re-interned.
Before an internee is released, the British authorities have to agree to the release and the Canadian immigration authorities, after studying his record, also have to give approval. The immigration authorities, however, do not grant the man the status of an approved immigrant. He is regarded as temporarily released subject to the observance of certain conditions.
The internees concerned are mainly German and Austrian Jews who were refugees in England and were interned because of their enemy nationality. They have since been classed as “friendly aliens” because of their opposition to the Nazi regime.
About 60 such men are employed in one factory near Montreal and some 20 in other factories in various places.

Big reminder that your country is not immune to bigotry. I've seen so many people, for example, pretend like antisemitism doesn't exist in the USA because we were part of the allied forces in WWII (of course, they conveniently don't remember that we rejected jewish refugees when WWII broke out and we only really joined because Pearl Harbor was bombed, but I digress).
If you think your country is immune from antisemitism, racism (including anti-Indigenous racism), class issues, ableism, whatever else it may be, look deeper because you will find it.
