Am I????? Completely obtuse??????
Five times I’ve read Black Powder War and I am only JUST NOW realizing the last poem carved into the stone at the exit of the Jiayu Gate was written by Lien?????
“Ten thousand li between me and your grave, Ten thousand li more I have yet to travel. I shake out my wings and step into the merciless sun.”
How many times are we told that she was a scholar and a poet.
That was…. Unexpectedly sad.

Summary:
Chen Xiang (played by Cao Jun), a young man in a small town, and his father Liu Yanchang (played by Liu Xiaofeng) have been living a peaceful life until one day, Chen Xiang accidentally discovers that he actually contains "magic power" in his body and could pass through walls effortlessly. After his father learned about it, he told Chen Xiang the fact that he had hidden for many years, that is, Chen Xiang's mother was actually the San Sheng Mu (played by Park Meixuan) in heaven. Because she violated the rules of heaven and married herself as a mortal, she was captured by heaven to an unknown destination. Chen Xiang was shocked to learn the truth and decided to overcome all difficulties to rescue his mother. Er Lang Shen (Jiao Enjun), who sees everything in his eyes, is Chen Xiang's uncle and decides to stop Chen Xiang's journey to save his mother. Thus, this difficult trip to save the mother kicked off with the interference of Erlang Shen. During the journey, Chen Xiang met many kind-hearted people and spirits, encountered various resistances, and even wanted to give up. But in the end, it was no match for his determination to save his mother...

Sad bouquet
I came across Jiayue Li profile on Instagram while I was searching for inspiration. I saw absolutely unusual and extraordinary illustrations created with pencils. Most of her drawings depict a black-haired girl in different roles and in different situations. I noticed that the girl’s body parts are usually disproportionate but the concepts themselves are unusual so it doesn’t influence the viewer’s perception that much.
I choose this picture as an example of Jiayue Li illustrations because I fell in love with the combination of the colors she used here. They are mostly pastel having nice transitions into each other, even though the transitions are not smooth, however, they look fine because of the colors being not that vivid. The girls here are shown as the flowers in the bouquet demonstrating the beauty from the outside and the withering life from the inside.
This illustration is another reason to think that bouquets of flowers are beautiful, but at the same time sad because they show the doom of flowers to death.

Assignment 6 part 1
Step 1
Photo Projects comparison
Tumblr media
By: Jiayue Yu (https://www.lensculture.com/2022-lensculture-critics-choice-award-winners?modal=jiayue-yu-the-winner-of-critics-choice-20220 ) Album title: In Retrospect
Tumblr media
By: Mara Schmit (Student project) ( https://cairostudentphotography.weebly.com/ )
Jiayue Yu’s picture and Mara’s are two pictures that are not identical but radiate the same feeling of silence and gloominess. Both pictures have a lot of emphasis on the play of light and shadows. The color palette of the photographs is also very similar since green, yellow, white, and black are the main colors in both photographs. There seems to be a great similarity between both photographs when it comes to utilizing light. The color composition that is emitted from the light is pretty similar in that muted hues of yellow and green complement each other along with the contrast of the black. In Jiayue’s photograph, the main light source is from the lighter; in Schmit’s photograph, the brightest light is coming from headlights. However, in Schmit’s photograph, the headlights are blocked by what seems to be a sort of glass window. There are multiple differences between both photographs; the most obvious one is the subject. In Schmit’s, the subject is the silhouette of a person or presumably a man smoking a cigarette whereas in Yu’s the subject is clear as well as a pair of hands that appear to be in the middle of the frame, the hands guide you to the frame as it acts as leading lines. I would say that the difference also lies in what each photograph portrays since Yu’s photograph gives a sense of serenity and the title “In Retrospect” convey the impression of nostalgia. Schmit’s photograph gives the same sense of quietness but it has a connotation of loneliness. These meanings are also strengthened by the use of smoking in both in which Yu’s photograph shows companionship as someone is lighting a cigarette for the subject but Schmit’s photograph shows a person that seems to be left alone with their thoughts. However, these two photographs still convey a sense of melancholy even in Yu’s photograph as the album portrays nostalgia so it still has a bittersweet sense to it.
The only factor that I think would improve Schmit’s photograph is the use of light in the background. There are four main lights in the back as they are the ones that give the green and yellow hues, however, the reflection of the green light on the right reflects on the cloudy glass which deviates my attention from the silhouette and the shadows.
Step 2
Photo project proposal
Personalization of Spaces in Egypt
The project aims to depict the personalization of spaces and objects in Egypt that reflects on Egyptian culture and one’s own personal impact on a space. My photographs will mainly consist of spaces such as shops, kiosks, or food vendors in Egypt and mainly around Cairo. These photographs will focus on how objects and spaces transform under the influence of people and how personalization in Egypt mainly reflects on Egyptian culture. Personalization of physical spaces is influenced by several factors such as the economy, culture, and environment and it mainly portrays the environment that someone inhabits. I believe that by capturing these personalized physical spaces one would be able to infer a lot about the characters that inhabit them. The notion that you could learn about people and possibly the culture through exploring personalized spaces and objects is an interesting measure to learn more about people. My personal style or genre will mainly be candid photographs and specifically street photography in order to capture these personalized spaces in their natural form. The spaces that I aim to photograph are someone’s everyday life and workplaces so capturing them abruptly would portray these places in their truest image. The photographs will be taken with my phone’s camera as it will be more convenient to take abrupt street shots for this project.

Although things are slowly changing around the world and many women have conquered with their own commitment relevant professions for which they are able to work, it has not always been possible for everyone to achieve this goal. Sometimes some women encountered sabotage on their freedom and dreams, even from the people they loved and those they believed in. Women should have the opportunities and chances to be the best version of themselves. This is not girls vs boys, women vs men, or us vs them. It’s about we + they = us. Since we all deserve opportunities. Dedicated to all the women that work hard, with perseverance to reach their path and dreams in different fields, each one in their own personal way. To all who are making a positive difference in the lives of others. The women talking in this issue have kindly agreed to share their personal stories, passions, dreams, challenges, and difficulties faced along their path and career. They are all inspiring women who are passionate about their jobs that create their own opportunities.
