Fluffbruary: Day 18
Prompts: suave, cologne, gradual.
Sherlock convinced John to go dancing tonight. “Going together might be fun,” he'd said.
Sherlock's as suave as ever, and John's already drunk on his charm and his cologne. He's not sure if the gradual raise in the room temperature is due to the whisky they're drinking or to Sherlock himself.
They start snogging. After a while, John breaks the kiss and murmurs “What if we just... stayed here?”
Sherlock beams at him. "I thought you'd never ask" he says, and kisses John again before standing up and pulling John up with him. Then, together, they head towards the bedroom.

A-Z Sherlock Fan Fiction Tropes Bingo
Many thanks to @swissmissing for creating this bingo card! Because I'm like that, I decided to go for a blackout bingo! And because, even as I was typing these, I kept thinking of more wonderful fics that would fit the brief, I hope to fill in my bingo card again. Writers are amazing and deserve to be lauded, and I have left off so many amazing fics and authors. Besides, we all need fic recs. 💙

AU/Amnesia The Murder of Emory J Amat by chriscalledmesweetie. Sherlock and John in 1920's AgathaChristieLand. It's a WIP but is currently updating weekly. (52k, T)
BDSM/Bodyswap - Certain Skills by NoStraightLine. John expressly told Sherlock that if he stole his gun again he’d get the fucking he was asking for. Sherlock “Boundaries Are Boring” Holmes stole John’s gun. (3k, E)
Crossover/Crack - Repo Men by Anyawen. In which Mrs Turner's married ones are James Bond and Q. Q is kidnapped; everybody is a BAMF. (7k, G)
Domestic/Disability A Building of Bridges by pengke. Alternate first meeting. No one would ever send Sherlock in to defuse a stand-off; but on one unlikely day, that’s exactly what happened. “Congratulations, Lestrade,” he called out sarcastically. “You’re traumatizing a war veteran.” (11k, G)
Established Relationship/Enemies to Lovers - Interview by bluebellofbakerstreet. In which the boys are in an 80's punk band, and are being interviewed by Rolling Stone. (2k, G)
Future/Fluff 50. Be You - No one Else Can by KittenKin. John's had a bad day and Sherlock doesn't know how to help. They both feel better at the end, and you will, too. (1k, G)
Gen/Genderswap - The Art of Communication by stillwaters01. Lestrade is receiving odd texts from Sherlock; he reads between the lines and brings help. (2k, T)
Historical/Humor - Acceptable Behavior by bbcatemysoul. Sherlock isn't really sure why John wants to shag him, but he's certain that if he's careful to behave properly about it, John can be persuaded to keep doing it. (3k, M)
Illness/imprisonment -  Radioactive Trees in a Red Forest by Maribor_Petrichor. Harrowing account of John's battle with mental health issues and addiction after - you know - everything. (280k, E)
Jealousy/Jilted - Hungry by LipstickDaddy. John can't figure out why Sherlock is being so nice to that new guy working with the yard. (7k, G)
Kids/Kink - The Alchemy of Sea Glass by reveling_in_mayhem. Salt and air and sand surrounded their little party of three. Crashing waves, gull cries, and the exhilarated exclamations of an excited three-year-old served as the soundtrack to a day filled with blue skies and bright sunshine. (22k, E)
Long/Love Triangle The Edinburgh Problem by snorklepie. “A nice holiday, just a bit more...murdery. ” John said drily. “Yes! The best kind of holiday!” Sherlock beamed. “So we won’t get bored!” (152k, E)
Magical Realism/Major Character Death Left by LifeonMars. John Watson is left-handed. He’s tried not to let it affect his life, but as any Lefty knows, that’s almost impossible. (45k, M)
NSFW/Next Gen. Warzone by abundantlyqueer. Three smutty stories that pick up where the first two episodes left off. (13k, E)
Omegaverse/Only One Bed - Scars Don't Lie by CumberCurlyGirl. The prospect of going undercover as husbands to a couples retreat is just too enticing to refuse. (33k, M)
Parenthood/Platonic The Man With the Cartier Frames by JRow. Sherlock's top priority is The Work, just as it's always been ... in between trips to Putney to help with Rosie, collecting Rosie from school, and preparing for Rosie's sleepover at Baker Street. (32k, T)
Queer/Quest Dance With Me by TotallySilverGirl. Sherlock's queer quest for johnlock requires dancing, and some help from Sally Donovan. (28k, E)
Retirement/Road Trip - The Winter Garden by Callie4180. As Sherlock nears the end of his career, he's given the gift of a cottage in Sussex. The honey from the beehives out back is amazing. Almost...magical. (31k, T)
Soulmates/Slow Burn Soul Mate by Mottlemoth. Mystrade. The words appeared on Mycroft's arm aged fourteen. He's now lived with the unfortunate words all his life, not certain that he even wishes to meet his soul mate if that's how the man talks. (4k, T)
Teen AU/Time Travel - The Curious Adventure of the Drs Watson by ShinySherlock. What if ACD Watson and BBC Watson switched places? (40k, M)
Undercover/Unrequited - Last Call at the Homesick Pub by Chryse. During the hiatus, Sherlock is both undercover and suffering from unrequited love. (3k, T)
Vampires/Villain POV - Nine Tenths of the Law by bendingsignpost. John knows what's his - of course he'll kill for it. (Modern vampire AU) (18k, M)
Whump/Werewolves When Your Belly’s in the Trench by Morgan_Stuart. The next time that door opens, John Watson will kill the person on the other side. (4k, T)
Xenomorphism/Xmas - Ghost Stories by SwissMiss. Sherlock's parents think he and John are a couple. They might be onto something. (22k, M)
Zombies/Zoomorphism - Aim for the Head by Breath4Soul. Sometimes you don't really find yourself until everything has ended.A fic about finding love, healing, and purpose after everything has gone to hell. Still a WIP, but worth it. (44k, M)

BOOKMARKS
The Palmyra Atoll by elwinglyre (E, 16,609 w., 3 Ch. || TSo3 Divergence / Episode Fix-It, Stockholm Syndrome, Kidnapped John Watson, John Whump, Evil Mary, Angst, Cuddling & Snuggling, Toplock, Limited 3rd John POV) – As John's preparing for the wedding, Sherlock is preparing to have his heart broken, and Mary is prepared to do the unthinkable. Intervention required. Enter Sherlock. Set before Sign of Three with a far different outcome. John is drugged, kidnapped, and left on an island, but not just any old island.
Chaperones by MissDavis (T, 34,114 w., 7 Ch. || 11 Years Post-S4, Fake Relationship, Parentlock, Disney World, Bed / Room Sharing, Friends to Lovers, Fluff, First Kiss, Obsessive Sherlock, Insecure John) – Right. Of course. Everyone assumed they were a couple and no one would question it. John put his elbows up on the table so he could rest his head in his hands. "You want to pretend to be a couple so we can chaperone a trip to Disney World with Rosie's class and you won't have to share a room with a stranger?" "Exactly." Sherlock beamed at him. "Don't worry about the cost. The Birmingham case last month paid more than enough to cover expenses for all three of us."
Thermocline by J_Baillier (M, 83,557 w., 14 Ch. || Scuba Diving AU || Adventure, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Marine Archaeology, Asexual Sherlock, Horny John, Relationship Drama, Technical/Scuba/Wreck Diving, Slow Burn, Underwater /  Medical Peril, Doctor John, Hurt Sherlock, Anxious Sherlock, John POV, Protective John, Body Appreciation) – John "Five Oceans" Watson — technical dive instructor, dive accident analyst and weapon of mass seduction — meets recluse professor of maritime archaeology Holmes. As they head out to a remote archipelago off the coast of Guatemala to study and film its shipwrecks for a documentary, will sparks fly or fizzle out?
Proving A Point by elldotsee & J_Baillier (E, 186,270 w., 28 Ch. || Me Before You Fusion || Medical Realism, Insecure John, Depression, Romance, Angst, POV John, Sherlock Whump, Serious Illness, Doctor John, Injury Recovery, Assisted Suicide, Sherlock’s Violin, Awkward Sexual Situations, Alcoholism, Drugs, Idiots in Love, Slow Burn, Body Image, Friends to Lovers, Hurt / Comfort, Pain, Big Brother Mycroft, Intimacy, Anxiety, PTSD, Family Issues, Psychological Trauma, John Whump, Case Fics, Loneliness, Pain) – Invalided home from Afghanistan, running out of funds and convinced that his surgical career is over, John Watson accepts a mysterious job offer to provide care and companionship for a disabled person. Little does he know how much hangs in the balance of his performance as he settles into his new life at Musgrave Court.
MARKED FOR LATER
Gone and Changed by cwb (E, 4,617 w., 1 Ch. || Farm/Ranch American AU || Teenlock, Friends to Lovers, Angst, High School, Summer Vacation, Swimming, Hot Weather, Oral Sex, Car Sex, Blow Jobs, First Kiss/Time, Falling in Love, Mutual Pining) – John and Sherlock are best friends, until John goes and changes. Part 1 of the Just Like That series
Forces of Nature by Ewebie (E, 18,369 w., 1 Ch. || Unilock || Rugby Captain John, Hammock Sex, Bad Jokes) – Sherlock watched as the man pushed himself out of the water and onto the floating dock constantly anchored in the middle of the lake. Oh. He was… He was quite tanned. Broad shoulders sloped into a narrow, muscular waist and tapered hips that disappeared into the navy swim trunks. Somehow the breadth of the shoulders made the thighs and legs that appeared out of the bottom of the trunks look delicate. Tanned in their own right and powerful, but oddly proportionate to the shorter stature the man seemed to possess. Sherlock watched the water run off of him, down his back, tracing a path along his spine and through the pleasing fossae lumbales laterales and lumbar lordosis into the waistband of the trunks. Sherlock swallowed. Shit.
Wrestled By The Sea by eragon19 (E, 35,323 w., 9 Ch. || Merfolk AU || Merman Sherlock, Different First Meeting, Magical Realism, Seaside Cottage, Falling in Love, Mystery) – When John Watson takes up Mike's offer to recover at his seaside home he expects quiet relaxation, healing and being dead bored. What other options did a man on a tiny army pension have? What he doesn't expect is to meet an odd man who only swims at night, and has the most unusual swimming stroke John has ever seen....
Hearts Don't Break Around Here by thatawkwardfriend (M, 54,796 w, 12 Ch. || Teenager AU || Homophobia, Past Abuse, Artistic John, John saves Sherlock, BAMF John, Horse Riding, Swimming, Minor Violence, First Kiss / Time, Making Out, Fireworks, Carnival, Fluff and Humour, Angst with Happy Ending, Death / Funeral, Hurt / Comfort, Morning After, Domestic Fluff, Friends to Lovers, Mutual Pining) – When John gets in a fight at school, his parents send him to Sussex for the summer in hopes that living with the Holmes’ will shape him up. It is there that he meets Sherlock Holmes: a class A asshole too smart for his own good. John expects a long, dull, lonely summer. What he does not expect is to form an unlikely friendship with the strange boy across the hall. What he expects even less is to fall in love with him.
Worst Kept Secrets by Sherlock1110 and sherlockian4evr (M, 66,611 w., 9 Ch. || WiP || Engagement, Coming Out, Angst and Feels, Homophobia, Idiots in Love, Big Brother Mycroft, Fluff, Scars, Weddings, Honeymoon, Playing Pirates, Parasailing, Archaeology, Paintball, Swimming, Golf) – For the prompt: What if the thing Mycroft did to upset Mummy... was to come out? What if, as a teenager, Mycroft decided to tell his family that he is gay, and his parents disowned him for it? It's okay now, he runs the British Government, he IS the British Government, but there's still that tiny part of him that wants his parent's acceptance, especially now he's found the man he wants to spend the rest of his life with. Part 4 of the Sherlock and Mycroft Fluff series
Slipstream by khorazir (M, 290,208 w., 25 Ch. || Tour de France / Sports Cycling AU || Room Sharing, Cycling Injuries, Discussions of Drugs/Doping, Awkward Romance, Hurt/Comfort, Bickering, Case Fic, Strangers to Friends to Lovers, Internalized Homophobia, Mutual Pining, Bed Sharing, Jealousy, Bi John / Demi Sherlock) –It’s going to be the last Tour de France for professional cyclist John Watson. Despite the hardships of cycling more than 3000 kilometres in three weeks, in blistering heat and torrential rain, over dangerous cobblestones in northern France and the mountains of the Alps and the Pyrenees, battling thirst, hunger, injury and exhaustion, not to mention bitchy rivals, doping allegations, and the ever scoop-hungry press, he is going to enjoy the ride, damn it. That’s what John keeps telling himself – until he meets his new teammate, Sherlock Holmes, who adds a whole new list of problems as well as an extra dose of excitement to John’s life.
WORKS IN PROGRESS
Dissonance by CarmillaCarmine (E, 76,624+ w., 14/? Ch. || WIP || Punk Band AU || Pining, Bi/Gay Panic, Best Friends to Lovers, First Kiss, Swimming, Music, Doctor Watson, Drug References, First Time, Blow/Hand Jobs) – Straight from military service, living a life devoid of purpose, John meets a man who reawakens his passion for music.
Just Like That Series by cwb (E, 201,462+ w. across 4 works || Series WiP || American Teenager / Farmer AU || Best Friends, Friends to Lovers, Angst, High School, Summer Vacation, Swimming, Friends to Lovers, Car Sex, Mutual Pining, Falling in Love, Kissing) – John and Sherlock are best friends, until John goes and changes.
Noctiluca scintillans by alexaprilgarden (E, 240,796+ w., 28/30 Ch. || WiP || 1990’a Teenlock AU || Summer Holidays, France, Drug Use, Swimming, Skinny Dipping, Angst, Masturbation, Slow Burn, Coming of Age, Alcohol Abuse, Period-Typical Homophobia, Switchlock, Heartbreak, Happy Ending) – August 1994: These are John Watson's last summer holidays. It's his first trip abroad in ages, and the first one without his parents -- three weeks on a camping site at the French Atlantic Coast, together with Harry and her girlfriend. It's swimming and hanging around at the beach, red wine in the evening and sleeping in. Until a dark-haired boy at John's age puts up his tent a few feet away from him and changes everything.

For the ask game : 🍓, 🎨 and 🥤
🍓 ⇢ how did you get into writing fanfiction? I read fanfiction waaaaaay back in the early days of the X-Files fandom, when it was circulated through self-extracting archive files on message boards and in chatrooms. And then I totally fell out of it until someone on an unrelated board mentioned loving fanfic and I figured I should check it out. I went to fanfiction.net and the most popular fandom was High School Musical or Glee or something, and the second most popular was Pirates of the Caribbean, and then the third was X-Men. So, I clicked on X-Men, and then got sucked into the Wolverine/Rogue fandom, and that's how I got back into reading fanfic.
For writing fanfic, there was a really well-written fic in which (adult) Rogue and Logan were a couple and they experience a miscarriage, and they are both kind of caught up in blaming themselves. It ended on a really ambiguous note -- like, one of them reaches out and the phone is ringing and you don't know if the other person would answer. I had actually recently miscarried myself, and I literally COULD NOT SLEEP thinking about this fic. I wrote a happy ending continuation of it, and emailed it to the author, which in retrospect was SO RUDE and thank goodness she was very sweet and supportive about it and encouraged me to post it, and so I did. And the rest is history! I'm pretty much a one-ship-at-a-time person and hopped from Rogan to Johnlock to Sterek to Winterhawk.
🎨 ⇢ link your favourite piece of fanart and explain why you like it
Absolutely love this one. The composition, the way they are both so beat-up looking but resolute, how they are covering each other. Just perfection. https://templeait.tumblr.com/post/143349494965/two-assassins-sitting-on-a-beam-s-n-i-p-i-n-g
🥤 ⇢ recommend an author or fanfic you love
Soooooo many. But, a special shoutout to @kangofu-cb who is an amazing writer and just all around the heart of the Winterhawk fandom to me. Her Halfway House series is next on my list to reread, and if you haven't checked it out yet I highly recommend!

THE CRANBERRY JUMPER
ON JOHN HAMISH WATSON 🎄🎁💝
Tumblr media
🎄A gift for @fluffbyday-smutbynight on this Merry Christmas Eve! 💌🎁🎄💝💌🎁🎄💝💌🎁🎄💝💌🎁🎄💝💌🎁🎄💝💌🎁🎄💝
--------------------------------
"Oh no, no, no, no!
You can't do it like that!
It takes some finesse!!
It takes some panache!!!
Your methods are
unnecessarily crass!
Your brain is so slow -
it won't load - only crash!
Why on earth, Anderson
did you join the force?
Was it for a joke?"
He said, going hoarse ...
for this tirade began
half-an-hour-ago!
And no one admitted
was wanting to show
Sherlock any reason
to now turn on them ...
Not when they could tell
he was gaining traction!
And unleashing insults
he HAD stored away
to give Anderson -
one fine, rainy day!
And that day was here!
- evi-dent-ly! -
For Sherlock's eyes danced
with unabashed glee!
And what? - you might ask -
Had triggered this barrage?
Had started this endless,
relentless,
montage ... ?
Of how miniscule
Anderson's
brain could be ... ?
Well wait, just a moment or two
and you'll see!
For indeed Anderson
Had well earned the right
to wear the dunce cap
on that Christmas eve night!
For the fool, he had dared
to go pick a fight -
about Watson's Jumpers!
His jumpers!
- That's right!
Now, only an idiot
would dare to say
that Watson did not look
quite fetching that day!
He sported a jumper
in Cranberry Red
One Sherlock had picked out,
with pride and said
to everyone listening
so cheerfully,
"Just look what I bought him!
I picked it out! Me?!"
And Watson had beamed
for you also could tell
that he wore it with joy
and with a small swell
or pride in himself
like he had a new toy
for all to admire
in this beaming boy,
beside him, delighted
with their hands held tight,
and unbearably looking
like lovers that night!
And that's all it took
to make Anderson snap -
Since he could not stand
Sherlock being a sap!
Not when his own life
was so, so un-happy!
He could not stand
to see Sherlock so sappy!
Sherlock being
so sickily,
ickily,
sweet!
He should have known better
and beat a retreat ...
But you know how they say
misery wants company ...
And I think that this jab
Proves quite definitely!
That Andersons brain
was the size of a pea!
He said that this glorious
cranberry purl
Would have looked quite amazing
- on any girl!
That Watson was softer
than he had suspected!
And that was when Sherlock
stepped in and elected
To give him a rundown
of how he was a farce!
An indelible,
Smellable,
Fallable,
Arse!
And Sherlock had chosen
that moment to stand
and pick apart every
last inch of the man!
And afterwards Watson
had flushed rather pink,
and in a soft voice,
of Lestrade - asked a drink
Then they rejoined the party
and I dare to say ...
Than no one looked happier
than they did that day!
With Watson in cashmere
- A jumper so fine -
That Sherlock kissed him
under the mistletoe,
whispering,
"Mine."

A Johnlock Fanfic | Part 5
John's eyes widened, "Are you suggesting what I think you're suggesting?"
Sherlock nodded.
"Sherlock!"
Sherlock took out the small red velvet box from his inner coat pocket, stood up from his seat calmly and slowly sank to one knee beside John as John watched him in slow motion. Because he couldn't freaking believe his eyes.
"John Hamish, will you do me the honour of being my husband?" asked Sherlock, opening the box and presenting a golden ring to John.
John blinked a few times, because oh dear lord, Sherlock just proposed to him!
Then his whole face lit up like the crackling sky on New Year's Day. And Sherlock tried his best to commit it to his memory.
John put a hand on his mouth, because freaking hell, he's on goddamn cloud seven, "Oh god yes, Sherlock! Thousand times yes!"
Sherlock gently took John's left hand in his hand and slid the ring on John's ring finger before kissing his hand and standing up.
"Thank you so much," murmured Sherlock, his face smothering into pure joy.
Angelo watched from a distance the whole exchange, beaming with happiness and impatient to congratulate the newly engaged duo but he wanted to give them some time.
John was looking at the ring on his hand with astonishment and wonder, "I should buy you a ring soon then, oh my god, Sherlock!"
Sherlock grinned as he took his seat again.
John stood and reached over the table to give Sherlock a sweet kiss.
The End? Here's link from the start

Dante's bi-weekly Johnlock fic recs // Week3
Hello! I'm back again with five fics. I was gonna post it yesterday but I was a bit busy so I'm posting now. Hope you'll read them and love them as much as I did. Feedbacks are always appreciated. Enjoy :)
Oh, also... you can check week 1 and week 2's recs if you want.
The House on Rue des Boulangers by Berty (M., 24299 w., 8 Ch., Alternate Universe-Different First Meeting, PTSD John, References to Depression, First Kiss, Beekeeper Sherlock, Suicidal Thoughts, Garden & Gardening, Angst and Fluff and Smut, Happy Ending) After being invalided out of the army and without any other prospects, John Watson has relocated to a small town in northern France. Now he has to decide what to do for the rest of his life. One morning there's a mad stranger in his garden chasing a swarm of bees, and it seems John's decision is made.
The Fall of Doctor John Watson by PaxEirene (ValaEnVash) (T., 13309 w., 9 Ch., Reverse Reichenbach, Grief/Mourning, Reunion, Implied/Referenced Suicide) What if it had been John that jumped/fell from the roof of St. Bart’s to save Sherlock, Lestrade, and Mrs. Hudson? Let's find out.
Chaperones by MissDavis (T., 34115 w., 7 Ch., Fake/Pretend Relationship, Sharing a Room, Sharing a Bed, Disney World, Parentlock, Friends to Lovers, Fluff, First Kiss) Right.
Sonnet by subtext-is-my-division (Quill_A) (E., 142096 w., 27 Ch., Teenlock, Fluff, Angst, Paternal Lestrade, Bullying, Homophobia, Attempted Sexual Assault, Explicit Sexual Content) Sherlock had spent a very long time feeling very, very lonely. He had never realised this, of course. Until John Watson came along into his life, and Sherlock realised there had been an empty space there that John had filled up perfectly.
A Quiet Murmuration by cathedral_carver (T., 4643 w., Kissing, Fluff, Sweet, Cuddling & Snuggling) "Just pay me back with one thousand kisses."

Hey, why do you think people get upset (especially purists) with the concept of Johnlock when it's been here for ages? I love the thrilling impulsive disordered way Sherlock thinks and acts (like my ADHD, OCD, and other mental disorders which I headcanon Sherlock to have.) alongside his nurturing and supportive Boswell (like my fiancé). They're flirty, fun, and affectionate with their jokes and laughs with each other throughout their mysteries, and that comforts me. Canon is damned and I don't care what Conan's opinions are if it makes me happy. Why are people so sour, salty, and act like the idea of me writing fanfiction and buying fanart of my first ship at 12 (when I first read Sherlock from the public library with my nana a decade ago) is the worst thing in all of existence and ruins Sherlock Holmes? Am I the crazy one or is everyone else who's crazy? (Btw it's nice to see someone on Tumblr who loves the OG turn of the last century version Sherlock than the terrible show alongside Lupin and Raffles.)
Hi anon! I know you probably just asked this question to get me to respond about how it’s ridiculous that anyone would get that upset about a fictional ship, but this question got me thinking for a bit. I’m one of the most biased sources here (i’ve made posts about how i don’t tag John/Sherlock because it should be a given, etc.), but I’ll try to respond to this question with an honest and fair answer because there are a lot of factors as to why people get upset at John/Sherlock.
Below the cut I’ll talk about:
1. Cultural Osmosis
2. 19th Century Friendship
3. Distaste for Shipping
4. Homophobia
1. Cultural Osmosis
One of the reasons I think is most prevalent is that people who have never read or watched any Sherlock Holmes content assume because it’s so old and so popular that they’ve somehow absorbed enough of it through pop culture and references that they know what Sherlock is like via cultural osmosis. They know he’s deductive and doesn’t like people, so they assume he’s cold, always calculated, and the pinnacle of detective perfection. They know John is the narrator and Sherlock’s friend, so they just assume John is basic, boring, and so uninteresting that he’s barely in Sherlock’s social circle, but merely tags along with him. This vision of both of the characters is skewed so far from the canon that people either can’t fathom how you ship these two characters who in their minds are very incompatible, or the more common thing, people have a preconceived notion that you’re looking too much into it because nothing old and published can be gay.
(This kind of thing isn’t just exclusive to Sherlock, either. People will also gawk at the idea of Spock/Kirk from Star Trek TOS because they assume they know what TOS is without even watching it because they’ve seen the cultural impact of “beam me up, Scotty” and “live long and prosper.” They create a mental image of TOS that’s mostly full of their own assumptions, and gay subtext isn’t one of their expectations.)
2. 19th Century Friendship
Another reason is that historical male friendships are different than what the typical male friendship is now. In the 19th century, men were more open to showing affection for each other in strong ways. Photos from the century show male friend groups openly holding hands, arm in arm, and helping light each other’s cigarettes. Obviously a lot of men are shaking off ideas of “manliness” that limit the way they can express their platonic love to their friends, but there’s still a lot of men that won’t hold their best friend’s hands because “that’s just weird/that’s gay.” This is all a long-winded way of saying that, to some people, Sherlock and John are the pinnacle of close male friendship in the 19th century. They are the perfect show of platonic affection between men, something that some people look up to and aspire towards. To people who think of Sherlock and John as exclusively best friends, they may feel offended or baffled that anyone would try to “ruin” that friendship by making the two lovers. That’s why some people who are legitimate fans of Sherlock Holmes may take offense to the ship: they think it ruins the friendship between the characters.
3. Distaste for Shipping
It isn’t uncommon for fans of a series to have a distaste for shipping elements, especially for a series whose sole focus isn’t romance. Sherlock Holmes is in no way a romance, and some people feel that shipping shouldn’t be the focus of fandom content because the source material isn’t romantic. People who want to focus on mystery and suspense elements may believe that shipping ruins what fans should be focusing on and appreciating in the franchise. And they have some merit in thinking that shipping can ruin the focus of a franchise, because there are definitely some fandom subcultures out there that ignore important themes and messages in shows to instead focus on their ship. But, this is an over-generalization of any fandom, clearly.
The above reasons for someone disliking Sherlock/John are not malicious. They assume the person is well-intentioned but misguided. In the cultural osmosis example, the person just doesn’t understand the source material and thus doesn’t understand the ship. In the friendship example, the person just wants to see a male friendship that isn’t toxic, and mistakes the act of shipping for throwing away that interpretation entirely. In the distaste for shipping example, the person just wants to focus on the themes of Holmes and not the romantic subtext. However, saying that everyone who gets upset at shipping John/Sherlock is well-intentioned would be a lie.
4. Homophobia
There’s an obvious reason of—whether implicit or explicit—homophobia when some people get downright disgusted or outraged that someone would ship John/Sherlock. I don’t think it needs explanation as to what homophobia is, but Sherlock/John especially outrages people more than other gay ships because the characters are classic. Sherlock is known throughout the world, everyone knows his name even if they’ve never read any of the stories, and his iconography—smoking pipe, hat, and jacket—have become well-recognized. It makes ignorant people boil over when you say that this iconic character who has remarkable impact on the world may be gay, asexual, or transgender. They think that lgbtq identities are something taboo or something to be ignored. To them, lgbtq characters should be background noise at most. And vocalizing that you see John/Sherlock subtext in their interactions destroys that.
TL;DR: Some people may be upset by John/Sherlock because they don’t understand the source material, they think shipping destroys a friendship dynamic they liked, or they feel that shipping takes away from the story. Some people may be upset by John/Sherlock because of ignorance and homophobia.

The One That Remains
Johnlock, 2k, A03
Summary:  Sherlock wakes up in hospital confused... but it all turns out even better than he could have dreamed.
Sherlock’s head feels heavy, and is throbbing dreadfully.  There are voices nearby – he can tell they are trying to speak softly, but each sound crashes into him like storm-churned waves against a cliff.  His mind is filled with fog and he can’t make sense of what he hears. Regretfully, he lets himself slip back into unconsciousness.
When he wakes again, the pain has faded to a manageable ache.  He holds still, not wanting to aggravate his head again, and tries to take stock.  In hospital, obviously, but with a minimum of support.  He carefully shifts his toes and fingers, and, reassured that nothing catastrophic seems to have taken place, opens his eyes.
“Ah, there you are.”  He hears John’s voice as his face comes blearily into focus.  “Gave me quite a scare this time, love.”  There’s a hand grasping tightly to his, and Sherlock quickly closes his eyes again.
Clearly he has underestimated his condition.  John is stubbornly loyal, and surprisingly forgiving, but he doesn’t call Sherlock love, and they don’t hold hands.  Not even in hospital, not even when their world seems to be ending. He can count the times they’ve hugged on one hand (and could do so even with the loss of a few fingers).  John may be getting over the grief of Mary’s betrayal, and has tentatively agreed to move back in to Baker Street, but things between them are decidedly not at the hand-holding stage, and never will be. John has made that abundantly clear on multiple occasions.
“That’s all right, then,” John says, in apparent reaction to Sherlock’s refusal to open his eyes.  “Sleep as long as you want.  You’re going to be fine, don’t worry.”  Sherlock feels John’s fingers gently push his hair off his forehead, and it’s all he can do not to fling that taunting appendage away.  “I’m here, it’s okay.  You’re safe.  You can rest.”
He flees into his mind palace, searching for an explanation for John’s behavior.  He quickly eliminates injury to himself – that’s happened dozens of times, and never resulted in physical affection along these lines, in fact it’s much more likely to elicit a reprimand.  He’s considering whether John could also have been injured in whatever case resulted in Sherlock’s own hospitalization, but he can’t imagine what would cause John to act in this manner other than some type of love potion and he’s not so far gone that he’s willing to acknowledge the possibility of such nonsense.
No, the only explanation that seems even remotely fitting is that Sherlock is caught in a dream, a dream where his deepest, most secret desires are permitted to see the light of day.  A dream where John loves Sherlock.
Sherlock is considering whether he can convince his brain to stay in this dream for at least a short time, enough to measure the length of each of John’s fingers against his own, and possibly hear a few more endearments uttered in John’s quiet just-for-Sherlock voice, when his musings are interrupted by a much less welcome visitor.
“Brother mine, I know you’re not asleep.”
Sherlock hears John chuckle, and then withdraw his fingers from Sherlock’s.  Sherlock tenses, forces himself not to grab at John’s hand, but he tells himself he has only dreamed it anyway and tames his unacceptable response.  It can’t hurt to lose something you never really had.
John and Mycroft exchange meaningless words, something inane about poor quality coffee, and then Sherlock is alone with Mycroft.
He revises his conclusion.  This isn’t a dream, it’s a nightmare, and not even a very interesting one.
“Come now, brother.  Open your eyes.”
Sherlock huffs and looks up at Mycroft. Pristine suit, clean shaven, eyes no more tired than usual.  Sherlock is clearly not in any unusual danger, nor is the rest of the world.
“When will I wake?”  he asks, realizing as he does that his dream Mycroft isn’t likely to know the answer any more accurately than Sherlock himself does.
Mycroft smirks.  “You’re wide awake now, Sherlock.”
“I’m not.”  Sherlock petulantly flops over on his side, facing away from Mycroft.  If dream Mycroft isn’t going to help, he might as well go away and let dream John return.  Dream John is lovely.  Dream John should stay forever.
“You’ve been drugged.  It’s altered you a bit but it will wear off completely soon.  Shouldn’t have any lasting effects.”
 “Go away.”
“I told John I’d stay until he returned, and I will do so.”
Sherlock twists and looks at Mycroft over his shoulder.  “He’s coming back?”
A fond look washes over Mycroft’s face, and that more than anything convinces Sherlock that he’s dreaming. Mycroft’s face is not designed to look fond.  It’s not in his programming.  “Of course he’s coming back.”
Sherlock presses his face into his pillow and pouts.  Mycroft is keeping something from him, but Sherlock can’t weasel it out of him in his present condition.  Sherlock needs more data, wants to spring from the bed and examine the situation from every angle, but he’s bone crushingly tired and can’t seem to summon the necessary energy to do it.  Maybe John will return, and Sherlock can rest with dream John holding his hand until he has recovered enough to break out of this confusion and return to reality.
John does return, bringing the aroma of coffee into the room.  As Mycroft is still present, John comes around to Sherlock’s other side and draws a chair close.  Sherlock squints an eye open, and sees John gazing right back at him.  He quickly shuts his misbehaving eye.  It won’t do to reveal too much, not without more information.
“It’s all right,” John says, his breath fluttering close against Sherlock’s face.  A stale almond croissant, apparently, was consumed along with the coffee.  Sherlock tosses away this unhelpful deduction and focuses on the much, much more interesting feeling of John’s hand stroking along his forehead and carding through his hair.  “You’re okay. It’s just me, love.”
There it is again, that word, it doesn’t make any sense.  It’s not for him, it can’t be, it never has been before.  Sherlock doesn’t argue, though, he’ll take it, gratefully.  John strokes his hand along Sherlock’s forehead again, and despite himself, Sherlock pushes ever so sneakily into John’s soothing touch.  He’s rewarded with a soft sound and the feel of damp lips against his cheek, and he wonders if he can dream this dream forever, because it’s the best dream he’s ever had.
But John sits up, saying goodbye to Mycroft as his brother (finally) takes his leave.  Now John’s hand is threading through Sherlock’s again, which is acceptable as it is John’s other hand this time, and it gives Sherlock the opportunity to gather further data, to compare this hand with the one previously examined, to shift each of his fingers carefully against the skin of John’s fingers:  shorter than his own, nails neatly trimmed, callouses where expected…
Sherlock’s breath catches in his chest, and he freezes.  If John notices he doesn’t say anything, just continues to hold Sherlock’s hand as a nurse engages him in vacuous small talk about the weather.  But Sherlock has encountered something which sends his dream crashing down around him, which shatters his fantasy so completely that he might as well send John back to Mary and go home to Baker Street, alone and miserable as always. But wait- that’s wrong, John isn’t with Mary any more, Mary is dead, Sherlock knows this, he was just thinking about how John was putting the entire Mary debacle behind him… it occurs to him, like a beam through the fog of his mind, that whatever happened to him must have affected his memory.
Sherlock must have allowed his confusion to show on his face, because John has noticed this time (he does observe, occasionally), and is speaking in his worried doctor voice.  But it’s not the same as it used to be, there’s something else going on, sentiment coloring his words.  Sherlock can’t stand this, he isn’t able to deduce anything correctly in this state, it’s unacceptable and intolerable and it’s scaring him.
 “Sherlock?  You okay?”
Sherlock squeezes his eyes shut, and a tear slides down his cheek.  Well done, he thinks to himself.  Now he’ll definitely believe you’re asleep.
“Hey, it’s okay.”  John wipes the tear away with a fingertip.  “Don’t cry, love.  It’s really okay.  Trust me. Whatever you’re thinking, it’s okay.”
Still an idiot, Sherlock thinks. That statement makes no sense. There are any number of things he can be thinking that are decidedly not okay.
“The drugs will wear off soon, Sherlock.  You got a low dose, you’ll make a full recovery.  Molly went over your results from the last victims, and she’s sure of it.”
Sherlock doesn’t know what Molly Hooper has to do with any of this.
“Come on, relax.  Take some deep breaths for me.”  John is running his hand over Sherlock’s head again, and Sherlock can feel the offending item hard against his skin.  Deep breaths aren’t going to help this situation.
“Tell me what’s wrong, love. Just tell me, let me help.”
That word cuts through him, and Sherlock can no longer control himself.  “You’re married,” he spits out, anger and confusion coloring his voice. “Go home to her.  Stop torturing me.”  He knows it doesn’t make any sense, he knows Mary is gone.  But then why is John wearing a ring?
John’s hand pauses in its journey across Sherlock’s forehead, and cups his cheek.  “Sherlock, open your eyes.”
 Sherlock shakes his head.
“Please,” John says softly, without even a hint of his Captain Watson voice, and Sherlock, helpless against this, complies.
John’s face is so dear, even with a few extra lines he doesn’t quite remember, and his eyes are shining bright as they meet Sherlock’s own.
“I am married,” he says quietly, a smile tugging at his lips.  “Very happily married.”  John shifts and pulls something out of his pants pocket and takes Sherlock’s hand in his own.  “And so are you.”
Sherlock gasps as John holds up a ring for him to see, and then slips it on to Sherlock’s finger.
“This isn’t happening.  I’m dreaming,” Sherlock insists, but John just gazes at him sweetly and presses a coffee-scented kiss to his cheek.
 “Wait – stop it – John – this isn’t-”
“It’s okay, love.  Just rest easy.  You’ll remember soon.”
“What are you talking about?” Sherlock wonders if he is having a panic attack – can you have a panic attack in your dream?  If you stop breathing in a dream, what happens then? Do you snap out of the dream when you die?  He realizes he’s basing this particular concern on that infernal dreamsharing movie John made him watch, and drags his focus back to John.  John, who is shuffling his chair even closer to Sherlock’s bed and leaning down until he’s practically embracing Sherlock.
“I wasn’t supposed to say anything until the drugs wore off, it just agitates the victims to realize that their memory is impaired.  I should have realized you’d figure it out, though.  My brilliant madman.”  John is snuggling against Sherlock, and Sherlock can feel the rise and fall of John’s chest against his own.
“Breath with me.  Come on.  Humor me.”
Sherlock does, his nose practically touching John’s cheek, warm air exchanged between them as Sherlock matches his exhalations to John’s.  When the room stops spinning, he pulls his left hand out of John’s grasp, and looks at the ring John placed on his finger.  He slides it off, blinking at the familiarity of the sensation, and sees the inscription. The one which remains.
“You had a hard time believing this the first time around, too,” John says.  “We each inscribed the other’s rings.  Want to see mine?”  John tugs his own ring off and shows it to Sherlock.  Inside is written conductor of light.
“This is a very detailed dream,” Sherlock says, returning John’s ring to him, and letting John put his own back on his finger again.  It settles easily, as if Sherlock’s hand adjusted to its shape long ago.
“A good one?”  John asks, his eyes searching Sherlock’s face.
“The very best,” Sherlock says seriously.  He doesn’t know what to think as John snuggles – snuggles – back down against him, one arm going around his shoulders as Sherlock lies there dumbfounded. Could John be right?  Could they be married?  How had Sherlock possibly pulled that off, how had he convinced John Watson to trust him with his heart?  It is both too incredible to believe, and at the same time… eliminate all other factors, and the one which remains must be the truth.
“All right then,” John says, tracing a finger along Sherlock’s collarbone.  “Rest a bit.  It’ll all come back to you soon, I promise.”
Sherlock lets himself drift off, safe and warm in a way that is perplexingly familiar.  When he wakes a few hours later, his husband curled up against him, Sherlock knows this isn’t a dream.  It’s his life, his treasured, improbable life, and it’s better than any dream he possibly could have imagined.

I am a huge fan of your writing. I would love a post season 4 fic where we see John and Rosie move back to 221b. Sherlock has an accident and breaks an arm and a leg. As he is wondering how he will take care of himself John turns up to collect him from hospital like its the most natural thing in World that he will take care of Sherlock. The focus is John wanting a chance to redeem himself. Happy Johnlock ending please. I’m over 18. Smut optional!

----
It’s only been a couple of weeks since John moved back to Baker Street, with his few belongings and infant-daughter in tow. Sherlock is still adjusting, and so is John, while Rosie bounces about the place like a tennis ball. She provides a perfect distraction, a much-needed buffer between John and Sherlock, who are still trying to find their way back to something considered normalcy.
Whatever their new normalcy is, Sherlock doesn’t know. He just hopes they find it soon because the unresolved tension hovering over 221B is starting to drive him mad.
Things are different. Better than they were before when John… well, that was before, and this is now. Sherlock tries not to dwell on their brief tilt into insanity. Mary, the aquarium, Culverton Smith, Eurus and Sherrinford. Each has taken a toll on Sherlock in one way or another. Things are different. John works at the clinic more often than he joins Sherlock on cases. He has a daughter to provide for, and his evening spent in a well with chains around his ankles has made him somewhat skittish.
Sherlock can’t blame him, not when he feels a little skittish himself—but he’s the world’s only consulting detective. It’s him, or it’s no one, and he’s got a bit of life left in him yet. Casework feels strange without John at his side, but John hasn’t been there in any consistent capacity since Sherlock returned from the dead, so he adjusts.
Sherlock’s had more madness than most, more than enough for several lifetimes. These days, Sherlock tires more easily. Moves a little slower, reacts a little later. Retirement is a word he starts to hear more often, echoing in his Mind Palace and staring back at him from the bathroom mirror when he pokes at the new wrinkles in his face and as he tugs at the silvered hairs appearing at his temples with increasing frequency.
It is pure irony that on the day Sherlock decides to slow down on the more challenging cases, to focus on fours and sixes and the life he hopes to build with John and Rosie, he has an accident.
The case is a straightforward kidnapping that Sherlock solves in minutes. The kidnapee, a young woman in her 30s, named Alice Forbes, is taken from her London flat by an ex-boyfriend. Sherlock leads Lestrade and his team to an old building with a decommissioned lift. Narrow and festooned with disturbed cobwebs, the shaft is dark and accessible with a rusted but sturdy-looking ladder.
In hindsight, Sherlock should have known it was too easy. Should have waited, should have let Lestrade’s men go before him. But, true to his impatient nature, he is the first to rush down the ladder.
And he’s the first to fall when one of the rungs, eaten through by rust and time, gives way beneath his hand, sending him to the bottom of the lift shaft. The fall isn’t far enough to kill him, but it is far enough to break bone, and Sherlock winces at the double crack he hears before agony and fire spill through his left arm and right leg. A cross-body break, of all things, arm trapped beneath him and leg striking a cable at the wrong angle.
“Sherlock?” Lestrade’s voice reaches him from above, invisible in the dark, and Sherlock clenches his teeth to resist the urge to scream.
Definitely multiple breaks, he can tell. Nothing hurts like a break, and right now, Sherlock is ablaze.
“Don’t climb down,” he manages to reply, voice wavering and strained with pain. “One of the rungs broke. Could be others.”
“Fuck,” comes the reply from above. “Are you okay?”
Sherlock squints in the dark, wetting his dry lips with his tongue as he takes stock of his body. At least the two breaks, possibly a mild concussion, and sweat rising on his brow. Shock. “No,” he finally says, swallowing around the taste of bile. “I need an ambulance.
Lestrade spits another short curse. “With how much you hate going to the A&E, I take it that it’s bad?”
“Rather bad,” Sherlock replies, trying for humour and just sounding weak and ragged. “I believe I’m going into shock.”
Instead of answering, Lestrade starts barking orders. Setting his temple carefully against something cold and metal, Sherlock blinks in the dark and takes in his surroundings. A shape shivers and sags against the wall of the lift shaft not far from where he lies. Given Alice’s lack of response to the shouting, he’s not confident she is anything like okay. Only the constant shivering tells him she’s still alive, and he clears his throat before shouting, “Make that two ambulances.” Swallowing, Sherlock sucks in a breath at a ripple of agony from his leg and adds, “I found Alice. Alive, but not conscious.”
“Got it,” Lestrade calls back. A light shines down, and Sherlock squints. He can’t make out Lestrade’s face, and likely the DI can’t see him either, but the beam from the torch is a point of light in the dark, and Sherlock fixates on it. “We’re gonna get you out, alright?”
“That would be preferred,” Sherlock replies, trying for venom and only sounding tired.
A rope snaps down next to his head. Tossed from above, it hangs in the air with a silent expectancy. Staring at it, Sherlock hopes Lestrade doesn’t expect him to climb up the offering. When it begins to shake and wiggle, he knows someone must be climbing down. A small, shaky sigh escaping his lips, Sherlock tilts his head back and closes his eyes. “It’ll be okay,” he murmurs, though whether the comfort is for his benefit or Alice’s, he doesn’t know.
As his mind begins to darken and drift, he feels a pang of guilt for not letting John know where he’d be today. Sherlock has time for one last passing thought of how he’ll manage with two broken limbs, whether or not John will even bother to visit him at the hospital, and if this little stunt will shatter the tenuous connection between them before everything fades away.
***
The faint drone of voices draws Sherlock out of his head, and he opens his eyes to bright lights and white coats. He blinks, squints and blinks again, waiting for his vision to clear. When it finally does, he finds a young woman standing over him with a small smile.
“Hello, Mister Holmes,” she greets, and Sherlock blinks once more before she introduces herself. “I’m Doctor Seif.”
“Hello,” he replies, his voice rough. Clearing his throat, he tries again. “Concussion?”
Doctor Seif nods in sympathy. “Mild, but enough to knock you out. You came in and out of it until we set your leg, then we lost you for a bit from the pain.” She pats his shoulder with a gentle hand. “Your left humerus is broken, but not severe enough for a cast. So we’ve done a splint, but your leg will need a cast.” Moving to set his chart down, she pauses and turns back, adding, “We called your brother—he was listed as your emergency contact. We spoke to his aide, and she said he would be here once he finishes with a meeting.”
Sherlock waves a hand, dismissing both her words and the faint pang he feels at the reminder that John is no longer his emergency contact. “He’ll turn up. Always does, just like a bad penny.” Doctor Seif laughs.
“I have two older sisters. I know just how you feel.” Tapping his chart, she tilts her head. “Now, let’s get you fixed up and out of here, shall we?”
Sherlock’s smile is small and strained, but an attempt nonetheless. “Certainly.”
***
The cast is bulky, and his arm aches in the splint, his pain barely impacted by the basic painkillers. But Sherlock refused anything stronger, and he grits his teeth hard against the discomfort as a nurse helps him into the protocol-dictated wheelchair. Doctor Seif stands next to him with a script in her hand for prescription refills. She hands both the slip of paper and a crutch to Sherlock once he’s seated.
“Let me know if anything changes or you experience worsening pain or signs of infection,” she says, waiting for Sherlock’s tired nod. “Otherwise, I’ll see you in a few weeks to evaluate the arm. Good evening, Mister Holmes.”
“Thank you,” Sherlock says in a quiet voice. He is exhausted, his body heavy with fatigue and faded adrenaline. He tilts his head toward the nurse, who begins wheeling him out of the room and down the hall.
They make it only a few feet before footsteps sound behind them, and a panting voice calls out, “Sherlock!”
The man pushing his chair pauses, and Sherlock turns his head to see John trotting down the hall toward them. Bemused, Sherlock glances at the nurse, who shrugs. He turns his attention back to John, who pulls up in front of them with a sigh.
“Sorry,” he gasps, straightening with his hands on his hips as he pulls in a loud inhale. “Took me a bit to get Rosie to her babysitter’s, then there was traffic, and…” John shakes his head. “But nevermind that, I’m here now.”
Sherlock stares up at him. “You’re… here?” he repeats, confused. John’s brow furrows, first with confusion, then with understanding.
“Of course I’m here. Greg called me, then Mycroft.” His frown deepens. “Was surprised to hear he’s your emergency contact.”
Sherlock’s eyes dart away, and he doesn’t reply.
“Sorry to interrupt,” the nurse cuts in, his voice reluctant, “but I need the chair, so if I can wheel you outside…”
“Yeah, of course,” John says, picking up where the words trail off. “I can take it from there.”
The three of them continue down the hall, the nurse pushing Sherlock in the chair with John at his side. They walk in silence, with Sherlock darting quick, bemused looks at John from the corner of his eye. John either doesn’t notice or pretends not to, and Sherlock is grateful for whichever it is.
Once outside, the nurse stops, and Sherlock starts wrestling with the crutch, the chair, his own body until John quietly murmurs, “Can I help?”
Sherlock pauses and glances up at him before nodding once, a stiff jerk of his head. Something like relief and gratitude passes over John’s face, there and gone too quickly to verify. Before Sherlock can take the opportunity to study him, John moves around to his side, the one without a splinted arm, and loops his hand gently around Sherlock’s torso. John helps him onto his uncasted foot, slips the crutch in place, and keeps close as Sherlock tests out a little hop forward. He is clumsy and awkward but mobile and shuffles along slowly. John stays close, helping where he can, one hand resting light and ready on the small of Sherlock’s back.
When Sherlock finally raises his head, coaxed forward by John’s quiet voice, he sees a silver car and freezes. John almost bumps into him and stops just in time, steadying Sherlock.
“What’s wrong?” he asks, tilting his head to look at Sherlock’s face.
Brow furrowed, Sherlock blinks at the car. “You bought a car?”
“Yeah, last week,” John says, relief in his expression. “Easier with Rosie, you know? And paying less rent, well, I thought…” he shrugs, letting the words trail off.
Wordlessly, Sherlock nods and lets John lead him off the curb and toward the car. John opens the door and coaxes Sherlock to drape his uninjured arm around his neck, helping him scoot down into the passenger seat.
Once John is next to him, sitting behind the wheel and waiting for Sherlock to finish getting settled, he doesn’t seem to know where to look. When he, at last, opens his mouth to speak, he and Sherlock talk over one another.
“I’m glad you’re okay.”
“You didn’t have to come all the way here.”
They both go silent and still, staring at one another. Blowing a loud exhale out through pursed lips, John breaks the standoff first.
“First off, I’m glad you’re relatively okay, considering.” Sherlock braces himself for the angry words, the dressing-down. But John just looks at him with a small, tentative smile, and Sherlock stares as John quietly says, “And of course I came.” He clears his throat, eyes darting to the windshield before they return to Sherlock’s questioning face. “I know things have been… well. I know it’s not like it was before, but I… I want to try.” Swallowing hard enough to make his throat bob, John looks at Sherlock with a mixture of hope and uncertainty in his eyes. “I know I have no right to ask for it, but I want a chance to show you things are different.” Hands clenching slowly inward then outward in his lap, John’s voice drops. “I want to show you that I’ve changed.”
“John…” Sherlock starts, only to find he doesn’t have any more words. John seems to understand, a slight smile tugging at the edge of his mouth.
“I want to redeem myself, Sherlock,” he says and holds up a hand to silence the protests he can no doubt see rising on Sherlock’s lips. “Don’t tell me there’s nothing to make up for because we both know that’s not true.” The small smile fades, and he reaches out to slip his fingers over Sherlock’s where Sherlock’s hand rests on the centre console. It’s unexpected and entirely welcome, and Sherlock blinks down at their hands before looking up at John. “I’m here because we’re a team.” His eyebrows twitch upward, and he adds, “Just the two of us, right? Against the world?” His smile is small and hopeful, and Sherlock feels a rush of warmth at the sight and the words.
“Of course, John,” he replies, nodding. “Just the two of us. And Rosie.”
This time, John’s smile is firm and confident, his laugh pleased and just a little surprised. His fingers curl between Sherlock’s knuckles with gentle but firm pressure. “Just the two of us and Rosie,” he agrees. His eyes glitter, and Sherlock’s lips twitch upward in quiet acceptance.
When John starts the car and guides them out of the parking lot, their fingers stay slotted together on the centre console.

“Stay still!”
“I hate this thing!”
“I know, but Mrs H made it specially for you, and if she doesn’t at least get one picture a year out of it for you, she’ll be disappointed, and then she’ll refuse to make her raspberry trifle and spoil this week’s Bake Off for me.”
“Well. I do want trifle.”
Sherlock wilted and submitted himself to the humiliating ordeal of the dreaded Pumpkin Costume. His ears were tight to his skull and his tail puffed up like a bottle brush, but he kept his fangs to himself when John zipped the orange monstrosity up in the back and adjusted the leaf covered headband. This was the fourth year he’d been manhandled into it and it was no less embarrassing this time around either. At least it wasn’t the Christmas Reindeer Costume Of Torment or the angel wings.
John set the timer on his phone and went to sit in his chair. “C’mere,” he ordered, patting the arm of the chair.
Hissing pointedly, Sherlock perched on the chair, his tail lashing behind himself. At least John had forgotten about the ribbon that went around it this year. Whenever his tail moved with the damned thing attached, it caught his attention and he was forced to chase it until he exhausted himself and John had to pick him up off the floor.
“If you smile, I’ll brush you,” John said out of the corner of his mouth before grinning at the camera.
Sherlock considered the bribe for a moment then beamed the instant before the timer beeped.
Three photos snapped in rapid succession, and the pair each sagged with relief. John pulled off the straw hat and picked bits of hay from the neck of his checked shirt. Just once he wished he could be the pumpkin instead of the scarecrow. At least the pumpkin didn’t itch.
Clawing at the costume, Sherlock twisted and wriggled until he could free himself from it. He rumbled a growl as he squirmed about on the carpet then swiped at John’s ankle. “My brush is on the mantle. You promised. Brush me. Now.”
“Yeah, yeah. Let me just make sure the shots came out.”
Instead of replying, Sherlock growled again.
“Fine. Spoiled, pampered, show cat.” He grabbed the slicker brush and went to the sofa to sit so Sherlock could sprawl across his lap. “I swear you get tangles in this on purpose,” he said, holding Sherlock’s tail still so he could work the brush through the thick fur.
“Knock knock!” Mrs Hudson poked her head through the door. “I brought you boys a treat. I heard you talking up here and thought you might like this.” She held up a deep crystal dish layered with sponge and cream and dotted with berries. “Oh, you wore the costumes! What darlings. I’ll bring up some spiced cider, too. You deserve it.” She set the dish down and patted John’s cheek affectionately. “So sweet to indulge me.”
“We need to get her a pet of her own to dress up,” Sherlock groaned as he melted under the brush. “Or a grandchild or two.”

Hey! Are there any fanfics of sherlock and rosie having fun together? It doesn't need to be johnlock... Just sherlock being a funny parent. Thanks:)
Reply: I mean if you are asking me, it’s going to be Johnlock. 😉 Also, since I rarely read one-shots, I don’t have any that are JUST Sherlock and Rosie having fun. However, most of the fics on this list have scenes like what you are looking for:
Post-series 4 parentlock
And since that list is 2 years old, here are some more with similar scenes:
A Quiet Life by DiscordantWords (25K, M, Johnlock) There had been three days of silence and a funeral. Sherlock had the terrible feeling that whatever happened next would depend, entirely, on him.
Bath Time by standbygo (7K, E, Johnlock) A five plus one fic about Sherlock and John taking - or not taking - a bath.
Chaperones by MissDavis (34K, T, Johnlock) Right. Of course. Everyone assumed they were a couple and no one would question it. John put his elbows up on the table so he could rest his head in his hands. "You want to pretend to be a couple so we can chaperone a trip to Disney World with Rosie's class and you won't have to share a room with a stranger?""Exactly." Sherlock beamed at him. "Don't worry about the cost. The Birmingham case last month paid more than enough to cover expenses for all three of us."
Curtain Rising by tiger_in_the_flightdeck (61K, E, Johnlock) A disgraced television star is the target of a series of death threats just after a theatre production’s adaptation of The Sound of Music is announced with her as the lead. The suspect list is a mile long and growing, Rosie Watson is in the spotlight, and Sherlock might be getting too fond of his time on stage to focus on the case. With opening night approaching, can he and John figure out who wants their client dead before her final curtain rises?
One Good Scare by blueink3 (17K, M, Johnlock) Mummy invites Sherlock, John, and Rosie to the country for her birthday, which just so happens to coincide with the annual Harvest Festival, an event Sherlock loathes. With John seemingly making the wrong move at every turn and with ghosts hiding in each of their closets, what will it take for their (Halloween) masks to finally come off?
The Alchemy of Sea Glass by reveling_in_mayhem (22K, E, Johnlock) Salt and air and sand surrounded their little party of three. Crashing waves, gull cries, and the exhilarated exclamations of an excited three-year-old served as the soundtrack to a day filled with blue skies and bright sunshine.
The Alphabet Vignettes by suitesamba (49K, M, Johnlock) Twenty-six vignettes featuring Sherlock and John's life after S4.  These begin just after E3 and continue into retirement in Sussex, but are presented in a non-linear fashion.

Conversation
Daily Life of Johnlock 6
John: So these full moon-beams, ... I can't see them, but I can feel them
Sherlock: Ordinary people would go insane in less than five seconds. Are you okay, John?
John: Yeah, I'm insane to begin with

Tumblr media
So @ao3commentoftheday suggested people make rec lists during these trying times and I decided to go ahead and jump on the band wagon. Here is a list of 13 Johnlock fics, sorted from shortest to longest. There’s H/C, PWP, Case Fics, PRETEND RELATIONSHIPS, and some pretty dank AU’s.
Okay then, onto the tropes!
(fics listed below)
Caught by Salambo06 (AO3) ( @salambo06fics)
Author’s Summary: A hotel room. They’re here for a case, hadn’t planned to spend the night and ended up sharing a room. No, sharing a bed. Suddenly John is very much aware of his own hand closed around his hard cock and the ragged breathing next to him. Closing his eyes for the briefest second, John dares to turn his head just enough to confirm what he already knows.
Sherlock, on his side, watching him.
Rating: Explicit
Word Count: 1,859
Tags/Warnings: bed sharing, wet dreams, POV John, Masturbation, Frottage, First Time, First Kiss
A PWP that’s scorching hot. ‘Nough said. (BUTOMG it is REALLY hot, beware reading in public yo)
----
Paranoia by Ewebie (AO3) ( @ewebie)
Author’s Summary: is a description of the rules of the drinking game Paranoia and also too long to put here! But suffice it to say that this fic involves drinking games at the Yard.
Rating: Mature
Word Count: 3,789
Tags/Warnings: Tumblr Prompt, Drinking Games, Silly... no smut but building fun and allusions to upcoming rrrwarr
I love fics where the team at the Yard and the boys all get drunk together. Throw in a drinking game and I’m already hooked. This fic was really funny and cheered me up when I was sick with the flu a while back (perfect time to read it again!)
----
Coldness/Heat by agirlsname (AO3) ( @agrlsname)
Author’s Summary: The inn is booked up on New Year's Eve. The train home is cancelled because of the snow. The only option is to sleep in the non-heated guest room of a client, and John and Sherlock are freezing.
You know where this is going.
Rating: Explicit
Word Count: 3,790
Tags/Warnings: Fluff and Smut, Plot What Plot/Porn Without Plot, Bedsharing, Sharing Body Heat, Frottage New Year's Eve, Cuddling & Snuggling, Friends to Lovers
THERE IS ONLY ONE BED! AND THEY ARE SO COLD! WHATEVER ARE OUR BOYS TO DO?!?!?! Turn it up to 11 in this amazing PWP, that’s what.
---- Stranded by BeautifulFiction (AO3) ( @the-pen-pot )
Author’s Summary: ‘Do you think we’re less than that – best friends? Or more?’
John’s head pulled back, and the look he received suggested John was seriously wondering how someone so intelligent could be so stupid. ‘Well, definitely not less.’
When stranded on a derelict barge at high tide, John and Sherlock reconsider their friendship.
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 5,798
Tags/Warnings: case fic, cuddling for warmth, first kiss
I really liked this fic. It really drew me in with it’s imagery, I could see the scenes as easily as I could see John and Sherlock getting together in this way.

Azure On Grey by shiplocks_of_love (AO3) ( @shiplocks-of-love )
Author’s Summary: When Sherlock’s transport betrays him and conventional healthcare fails to help, John comes up with an unorthodox solution…
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 8,986
Tags/Warnings: Hurt/Comfort, Medical issues, Kidney Stones, Embarrassing Situations, brief mention of past substance abuse, unorthodox medical treatments, Amusement Parks, Intimacy, hints of romance, Pining John, friends to almost lovers
This fic is a wonderful H/C that features a sick Sherlock who can be exceptionally fragile at times, and a caring Watson. Makes me wish I’d had a John around when I had kidney stones :’(
---- Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder by cypress_tree (AO3) ( @cypress-tree)
Author’s Summary: John helps Sherlock with an experiment: for an entire month, they are not allowed to touch each other and must remain at least one metre apart at all times. Meanwhile, I conduct my own experiment: how much UST can I shove into a single fic?
Rating: Explicit
Word Count: 10,669
Tags/Warnings: Unresolved Sexual Tension, it's for an experiment John, Resolved Sexual Tension, smut
Sexy, silly, amazing.
---- Chaperones by MissDavis (AO3) ( @missdaviswrites)
Author’s Summary: Right. Of course. Everyone assumed they were a couple and no one would question it. John put his elbows up on the table so he could rest his head in his hands. "You want to pretend to be a couple so we can chaperone a trip to Disney World with Rosie's class and you won't have to share a room with a stranger?"
"Exactly." Sherlock beamed at him. "Don't worry about the cost. The Birmingham case last month paid more than enough to cover expenses for all three of us."
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 34,115
Tags/Warnings: Fake/Pretend Relationship, Sharing a Room, Sharing a Bed. Disney World, Parentlock, Friends to Lovers, Fluff, First Kiss
I’ll just use what I wrote when I bookmarked this lovely fic: I’ve never been more compelled by Disney related things than when I was reading this fic. I’ll never go to Disney World, but I’ll sure as hell read this fic again omg was it good
----
The Darkness Within, So Close by shiplocks_of_love (AO3) ( @shiplocks-of-love ) ((I hope @ing you twice doesn’t cause any issues! Sorry in advance. Tumblr confuses me))
Author’s Summary: Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller deal with a new string of murders in Broadchurch. Help comes from an unlikely place as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson travel to West Dorset. But when the new crimes open old wounds and unearth the ghost of Moriarty, it becomes clear the game is not over yet.
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 42,312
Tags/Warnings: casefic, Sherlock x Broadchurch crossover fic, Underage Death, Murder, MAJOR spoilers for Broadchurch S1 and S2 and for Sherlock S3, post S3 Sherlock, post S2 Broadchurch, you are MOST welcome to put johnlock glasses on but this is pre-slash okay?, Light Angst, Implied/Referenced Drug Use, Implied/Referenced Domestic Violence
I haven’t actually finished this fic yet, but the characterizations for the characters of both universes are spot on. When Alec Hardy started shouting at the beginning, David Tennant appeared in my room and started reading the fic aloud to me. True story. Also this fic is part of a series, so, like, that’s amazing.
----
The Norwood Love Builders by flawedamythyst (AO3) ( Tumblr: https://flawedamythyst.tumblr.com/) ((couldn’t @  you for some reason. Prob, again, because Tumblr makes my brain hurt))
Author’s Summary: Sherlock and John go undercover to solve the murder of Joanna Oldacre, but things are complicated by the many feelings John has been repressing in the wake of Sherlock's faked death and return.
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 47,798
Tags/Warnings: case fic, fake/pretend relationship, couples retreat, bed sharing, therapy (for a case...that’s a weird tag but I read this in fic so often so), pining John, UST, First Kiss, getting together
Amazing fic by an amazing writer. I have a weakness for ‘pretend relationship for a case’, especially when it’s filled with pining and ust. So in other words this fic is perfect.
----
Bridging the Ravine by SilentAuror (AO3) ( @silentauroriamthereal)
Author’s Summary: Sherlock and John go undercover at Ravine Valley, a therapy centre for same-sex male couples in an investigation into a possible human trafficking ring. As they pose as a couple and fake their way through the therapy sessions for the sake of the case, it quickly becomes difficult to avoid discussing their very real issues. Set roughly nine months after series 4.
Rating: Explicit
Word Count: 58,887
Tags/Warnings: post-series 4, Romance, Awkwardness galore, fake couple trope, Therapy, sex trafficking ring, First Times, Massages, wet t-shirt contest, Group Therapy, loss of child (past), Bed-sharing
Pretend relationship for a case, and it’s a really good case too! Plus it’s at a couples therapy retreat, I mean, come on!! And the OC’s, don’t even get me started on them, because I won’t be able to stop singing their praises. This fic was sent by the gods through the blood sweat and tears of the extremely talented SilentAuror. You should honestly just go and binge all of their stuff. What else are you gonna do during quarantine? OH! And guess what??? THERE’S A SEQUEL!
----
Sensory Science by sussexbound(SamanthaLenore) (AO3) ( @sussexbound)
Author’s Summary: John Watson has been invalided home from Afghanistan and is struggling with anxiety, depression, PTSD and insomnia, when an old friend from med school recommends something that might help: An ASMR YouTube Channel run by a friend.
One session in and John is hooked, not only by the way the ASMR seems to calm him after nightmares, and help him sleep, but also by the mysterious man who runs it.
Rating: Explicit
Word Count: 80,017
Tags/Warnings: Friends to Lovers, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, PTSD John, ASMR, first meeting AU, problem drinking, Nightmares, Suicidal Thoughts, Internalized Homophobia, Implied/Referenced Child Abuse, Anxiety, Depression, Homophobic Language, Masturbation, Orgasm Delay/Denial, Prostate Massage, Prostate Orgasm, Phone Sex, Mutual Masturbation, Frottage, Coming Untouched, Aborted Blowjobs, Rimming
Amazing fic that really draws you in. Even if ASMR isn’t necessarily your thing, this is still a fantastic read. I mean, it’s by sussexbound, so what else would you expect?
----
Rewind by All_I_Need (AO3) ( @the-reading-lemon)
Author’s Summary: About a month before John's wedding, he and Sherlock embark on one last case together: a murder at a remote hotel in the middle of nowhere. A lot can happen in a week. And a lot doesn't. But what if ...?
Rating: Explicit
Word Count: 87,594
Tags/Warnings: Pining, Angst, John is an oblivious idiot, all the feels, Rewind - Freeform, what if, Sharing a Bed, Dancing Lessons, literally everyone sees more than John does, Fake/Pretend Relationship
THIS FIC! This fic!! Let me tell you a thing about this fic: it’s amazing! I haven’t finished it completely, but the unique ‘rewind’ effect is something I hadn’t ever seen before. Interesting concept, pretend relationship for a case, hot, hot smut, AND THERE WAS ONLY ONE BED. What more could you want in a fic, honestly?
---- Out There by DiscordantWords (AO3) ( @discordantwords)
Author’s Summary: FBI Special Agent John Watson, medical doctor and army veteran, is assigned to assist eccentric genius Sherlock Holmes with paranormal investigations on the X-Files project.
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 131,695
Tags/Warnings: Alternate Universe - Different First Meeting, Alternate Universe - Fusion, Alternate Universe - X-Files Fusion, Slow Burn, UST, No seriously a lot of UST, This is the X files they basically wrote the book on UST, casefic, Case Fic, Government Conspiracy, Aliens, UFOs, Mutants, Pining Sherlock, Pining John, First Kiss, Coma
The X-files/Sherlock crossover I always needed in my life. I think at least a few other Johnlockers out there (ha! Fic title) have watched X-files and thought ‘holy cow this is so John and Sherlock, I need the AU or else I’ll die’. Well look no further! No need to die! Read and watch as all your X-files/Sherlock wishes come true :D
----
And that concludes this rec list! There will prob be a part 2 coming out as I’ve got hundreds of fics saved on this pairing. Also stay tuned for fic rec lists for some of my other fav ships! Spirk, Garashir, Hannigram, Bunny/Raffles, and more!!
