Re: Callum drawing love from strength vs love never been an unequivocal good in TDP (written post-S4).
Let's talk, briefly, about love as a strength and a weakness in 5x08, as the episode highlights this dichotomy very well. To begin, we have Callum and Finnegrin's differing viewpoints on it, specifically:
C: See? So long as we protect each other, so long as we love each other, you can never control us.
F: All that talk about how love makes you stronger, but the second you see that elf girl in pain, you completely lost yourself.
And to a certain degree, they're both right. Callum's epiphany of "You don't control anything" is something that applies to both Callum and Finnegrin because it's the innermost truth of the arcanum they now both share.
Callum's love for Rayla allows him to be controlled, shown when he gives up the spell (and by doing dark magic).
But it's also what sets him free from Finnegrin's (immobilization) blood freezing spell. Love here is why Finnegrin is also ultimately unable to control him, too.
However, I want to talk more specifically about the hands in Finnegrin's Wake (yes, again, because there's still more to talk about) in regards to the epiphany scene in particular with more detail than I gave it in the linked meta a few lines above. Let's look at the framing, shall we?
When Finnegrin first gives Callum the rattle snake tail (a literal warning sign that Callum is goaded and then does crush out of desperation), we see Callum clasp his wrist, like a chain, and the shot of his palm open wide.
We get a similar open hand shot as he starts to connect to the Ocean arcanum, thereby showing his acceptance of being willing to use dark magic to save Rayla (and his loved ones) is indeed crucial to him unlocking the Ocean arcanum. Rayla is likewise highlighted because she was on the one tethered to this poem earlier on in the season (x2). Callum mimics the crushing of the slug as the final physical / metaphysical stage required for the magic to take hold.
And, rather symbolically, the dark storm we saw at first as well as the rain begins to fade. The light comes out and the chaos recedes. He's weathered the storm and come out drastically changed for it, but him unlocking the Ocean arcanum is strength and is a positive: it allows him to free himself. It brings back the light. It's tethered to Love.
But the episode doesn't end on a triumphant note, because it's not interested in easy answers or straight forward paths. Instead, it's interested in dualities and dark sides, and that Callum's love for her will unlock both great things - and terrible ones.
And so again, we return to the hand clasp - the metaphorical chain - because as much as love has given him strength and having Rayla in his life is worth it to Callum, it's still not without its complications ("Now you're back: that's kind of good, and it's kind of bad" / "We have to hold pain and love in our hearts at the same time"). She makes him strong and supports and loves him, but she's also his weakness and leaves him worryingly exploitable, if only to his own nerves and reservations.
I've had this as a WIP for weeks and decided to finally shut up and post it
anyway oh no i got into metal gear a surprise to nobody i went and drew the one final fantasy ass anime twink who lives in the world of old bearded dudes
bonus: this started as a sketchbook doodle before i decided to make it a whole thing
I also did the worlds most out of character thing and drew a dude with a beard the result is the exact level of quality you would expect from me attempting to draw a not anime looking man with a beard
People who followed me way back when I was posting VHHB may remember I had a personal AU where Donnie was raised by Holly Blue. Yeah my brain kind of blew up with it the other day, adding in Leo being raised by Bueford, the tension between Raph and Mikey being cranked up to ten, and a lot of other craziness
Anyway here's a doodle page.
Couple of other quick points
Donnie's full name in this AU is Belladonna, but Leo still calls him Donnie
Leo's name is just Leo, no longer form
Due to losing two children, Splinter is rather protective over Raph and Mikey and Raph being the big brother starts picking up on this as well, and Mikey finds it suffocating.
Leo and Donnie have known each other since they were toddlers and consider themselves to be cousins (they don't know they're related)
ID under the cut (it's a big one tho oh gosh)
[ID: A massive page of doodles, some colored and some not, for an AU of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Starting in the upper left corner is a two panel comic featuring an alternate design of Donatello. In the first panel he's holding a cigarette close to his mouth and attempting to light it. In the next panel, a voice from someone out of view shouts "Belladonna! Did you steal my cigarettes again!" Donnie drops the cigarette in surprise, and the antenna attached to the ear pieces he wears go straight up.
Just below it are a small doodle of Holly Blue, a mutant wasp, holding a baby Donatello who is reaching for her antenna. And a simple drawing of a shield bug.
To the right of it is a three panel comic. In the first panel is a drawing of Draxum with his mask still on, pointing with two fingers. He says, "Matter of fact, your eggs hatched on the same day." In the next panel is a simple drawing of Donatello and Leonardo. Leonardo is gasping with his arms out while Donatello just looks shocked. In the next panel Leonardo is holding Donatello by the suspenders and shaking him while shouting, "We've not only been brothers this whole time but TWINS?"
To the right of that is a simple drawing of Leonardo holding up a bagel and looking sympathetic while looking at Raphael who has giant tears in his eyes. Leonardo says, "Can I offer you a bagel in this trying time?"
Below that is a drawing of Michelangelo pointing, his hand larger due to perspective, and glaring sharply as he shouts, "I'm 13 I'm basically an ADULT."
In the bottom left is a drawing of Leonardo, his fists on his hips and smiling with his tongue sticking out. Rather than his usual outfit he has a pale yellow bandanna on his head, an off-white tank top, and blue shorts. The tank top has a logo for Bueford's Bagels on it, the design of an ouroborus but puffed up like pastry. The shorts feature the same yellow stripes on his legs.
To the right of this drawing are two small doodles, one of Leonardo hugging Bueford, a snake yokai, and another of a baby Leonardo biting into a bagel that's almost bigger than he is.
In the bottom right corner is a colored drawing of Michelangelo from the back. He's looking back just a bit and glaring at the floor, his eyes in shadow. He's clutching his left arm with his right hand. On the back of his shell is a hazy image of Shredder's face with a crack near the center of it.]

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes + Catching Fire parallels
YOU GUYS. Lightning struck the tree in the Quarter Quell’s arena at midnight. The victors were running around the woods, yelling for each other, trying to reunite and meet back up at the tree at midnight.
“Once, he [William S. Hamilton] held a snake in his hands and chased a friend around the lawn of his family home, the Grange, in New York. The back-woods near the Hudson River behind the Grange must have made an ideal playground for a young boy who was in his element when surrounded by nature.”
Happy late birthday to William Stephen Hamilton! I was drawing a little comic based off of this childhood story of his and saw his birthday was soon so i guess it can be his birthday gift,, it's just a little late because I was super busy this week.
I’ve seen people say the lyric change from “What’s left for me in this broken house” to “What’s left for me and my broken heart” is to reflect the change of Blitzø going from an escape to Stolas having genuine care for him and while I agree that is one way to take it, I took it a different way.
Personally, I read the lyrics of “What’s left for me and my broken heart” as an admission to already having a broken heart because Stolas, since the beginning has had depression. It was implied (in my opinion) that at some point during the series he stopped taking his medication due to Blitzø’s influence on his life. We have seen Stolas grow more confident, more independent, and more assertive since the beginning of the show and this is largely due to the relationship he’s formed with Blitzø. One person can do a world for one’s self esteem and confidence in both good and bad ways. For Stolas this has mostly been a good thing.
He has finally gotten some control over what he wants for his life. He’s broken off his marriage, most notably. He’s discovering what he truly likes sexually. He’s mending his relationship with his daughter. He’s putting in work to make his life more his own instead of just what was forced upon him.
All of this largely a result of that first night with Blitzø and also the continuing of spending time with him. Blitzø was at first the event that caused his life to change (through the thrill of pleasure) and then the person who has become Stolas’s drive to make it better yet still, it’s not enough.
It’s not enough to just have things change. It doesn’t make years of abuse and torment go away. We see that with Blitzø most notably with the fact that he is still so guarded and views so lowly of himself despite caring for Stolas as well.
The same is true with Stolas. When he is faced with the possibility of losing Blitzø we see him go back to his medication. We see him have that confidence that Blitzø unintentionally gave him (through the sting of pain) with finally standing up to Stella properly but we also see him immediately collapse after (whereas before he stood tall and laughed in joy and relief). It’s a fickle thing.
With or without Blitzø his heart is broken. He is depressed. However, with Blitzø it seems to not stay around as much, he seems to have hope for a future that he truly yearns for or at least he used to. We see Stolas smile most often with Blitzø or when he’s thinking about him. There are several examples that are exceptions but for as much as he see him standing up for himself while he’s surrounded by people who have abused him we also see him in a state of unease.
Now before people put words in my mouth, I’m not saying that Blitzø’s job is to help with Stolas’s depression or that he’s somehow a cure. What I am saying though is that Stolas does see him as a light source in the dark, a moon if you will allow me to be so on the nose. What Stolas seems to be forgetting is that the moon’s light is a reflection of the stars’ and even without the moon there is still plenty of light.
Stolas, in fact, has been represented as stars as well as Octavia. He has light in other forms but Blitzø has been the brightest one in terms of attention grabbing. However, Stolas doesn’t seem like he’s realized that all the potential of confidence just had to be shown to him through someone else for him to be able to grab it for himself because Blitzø’s confidence has been false.
Blitzø and Stolas are just as similar as they are different. It’s both what makes them work and what holds them from each other. They’re both broken individuals in a sense and they could both help each other heal if they’d just open up to it. Would they heal each other completely? No, absolutely not but they could help each other begin to mend in many ways.
So, “what’s left for me and my broken heart if I cannot have you?” A lot. A lot is left for him and a lot of it would be a struggle alone to have that confidence for himself and have it not be found in the pain or the pleasure of Blitzø which is really the main times we’ve seen him have it so far.
