Kei cant remember a time he had ever seen Hinata this mad. Well maybe mad wasn’t the right word, but Hinata was glaring at Kageyama and he was sure the setter wasn’t leaving his house alive.
Why did Yachi think it would be a good idea for the five of them to meet in a closed in space such as his house. The sight of Hinata covered in water and glitter only proving it.
“Tobio, you really didn’t think how this prank would backfire, did you?” Kageyama’s only response was a questioning tilt of his head (Kei would never admit how cute it was no matter how many knowing looks Yamaguchi sends him).
“Hey Tobio, give me hug,” he watched as realisation dawned on Kageyama’s face the moment Hinata raised his arms in a motion that was never supposed to be as frightening as it was.
Both Yachi and Yamaguchi moved to stand behind him seconds before Hinata tackled Kageyama. They both fell to the floor laughing, Hinata’s much louder than Kageyama’s.
“And here you can see two idiots being their usual idiotic selves.”
“Oh please, you know you love us.”
“Hmm, that’s debatable.” By now Hinata and Kageyama had stopped to look at him, and Kei really did not like the look they gave each other. (He missed the nods Yachi and Yamaguchi gave from behind his back and how they moved just a little closer.)
“Why are you smiling, I hope you not planning on touching me while you covered in that evil substance,” Kei took one step back as both of his boyfriends in front of him stepped forward. By that point he couldn’t react quick enough to avoid Yachi’s and Yamaguchi’s grip on his arms.
“I hope the two of you know your filthy traitors,” it was the only thing he could get out before the five of them were on the floor in a glitter covered cuddle pile. (If the rest of the team wondered why two weeks later pieces of glitter were still falling out of their five first years hair, they never got a straight answer.)

And I promise every day (to make you feel this way) | Poly first-years, PG, 2.4k
NaNoWriMo Day 24: Soulmate AU Day Seven of AU Week! Posting a new AU fic every day for one week. LOL. At least I finished???  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Summary: Sappy sweetness with five soulmates, but not because of morning pancakes. Generally takes place after high school where all five Karasuno first years are in a loving, polyamorous relationship.
Read on Ao3
A/N: AND FINALLY. THE LAST FIC OF BOTH THIS AU WEEK AND NANOWRIMO PROMPTS ARE DONE  \o/  I HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO SAY OTHER THAN HALLELUJAH.
Title from Written in the Stars by Wendy and John Legend. Beta’d by the ever wonderful Patrisha and shout out to @omgrandomwords for the idea throwing<3<3<3 All other mistakes are my own.
They’re sleeping over at Tobio, Shouyou, and Hitoka’s apartment because they have the most space. Everyone had agreed they wanted to spend the night together before their anniversary the next day, despite their living circumstances.
(They have yet to find a place that could comfortably fit all of them living together while also giving them room to breathe. Even though they could prove they were soulmates, apparently it was still rare for places to house a bond with more than two people. Who would’ve thought finding a home for five would be so difficult?
“Of course it’s going to be hard,” Tsukki had grumbled, “nothing this good ever comes easy.”
“Aw, Tsukki!” Tadashi had cooed. “We’re good things in your life?”
Tsukki scoffed, but the blush painting his face red said otherwise. Shouyou and Hitoka cooed along with him, and Tobio had a sweet smile on his face.
So, until they could find and afford a place in the city, Tadashi and Tsukki lived in one apartment, while the other three lived down the hall from them.)
He and Tsukki arrived a little after dinner with their things in hand. Rolling their sleeping mats across the floor into neat rows had been for nothing because they ended up shifting towards each other anyway, limbs overtop one another.
Listening to the soft breathing of all his soulmates, Tadashi looks at his arms. His soulmarks are beginning to fade, like all marks do once a person has found and bonded with their soulmates. Though he’s excited to let them settle, part of him wants to have them fresh forever, to see his tattoos as vibrant and bold as his soulmates for the rest of his life.
On the inside of his left wrist is Tsukki, the oldest and most easily recognizable mark. Further up his arm is Tobio with the simplest yet darkest mark. On his bicep is Hitoka’s beautifully complex design, and at the point of his shoulder is Shouyou’s sun. All four of their tattoos are connected with intricate lines that remind Tadashi of tangled vines, weaving and braiding over his skin.
Hitoka mumbles in her sleep, and Tadashi’s gaze immediately flicks to her. Since most nights she spent with Shouyou and Tobio, she’s sleeping in between him and Tsukki tonight. She mutters something else before rolling over. He smiles, pressing a kiss to her hair.
He adjusts his sleeve back over his arm and, pulling the blanket to his chin, falls asleep.
He wakes up to the smell of pancakes in the morning. He squints an eye open, the world fuzzy with sleep.
He sniffs. God, he hopes that’s Hitoka cooking.
Tadashi sits up while rubbing his fists to his eyes. Tsukki and Tobio are still asleep, but Hitoka and Shouyou’s sleeping mats are abandoned, sheets rumpled and untidy. He stretches his arms over his head before standing up, making his way to the kitchen.
Both Hitoka and Shouyou are cooking, and he’s only barely stepped into the kitchen when Shouyou looks over his shoulder.
“Morning!” His boyfriend grins at him.
Hitoka turns around too, smiling softly. “G’morning!”
“Morning,” Tadashi says around a yawn. He walks up to his partners, giving them each a kiss on the cheek. “Pancakes?”
“Mhm!” Hitoka hums. “We only started making the batter, but so far we’re planning strawberry for Kei, blueberries for Tobio, cinnamon for me –”
“And chocolate chip for me and you!” Shouyou finishes.
“That sounds amazing,” Tadashi moans, an arm curling around Shouyou’s waist. He pulls Shouyou in for a chaste kiss on the lips. “Thank you so much, you two.”
“Bleh,” Shouyou whines. “Go brush your teeth, Tadashi. You still have morning breath.”
“Rude,” he mumbles while he kisses Hitoka.
“But it’s true, Tadashi.” Hitoka at least has the decency to blush.
“My soulmates are the meanest,” he complains, but stalks off to the bathroom to brush his teeth anyway.
When he returns from the bathroom, Hitoka’s starting up the rice cooker. Meanwhile, Shouyou’s meticulously pouring a bag of chocolate chips into a measuring cup, tongue adorably sticking out in concentration. Tadashi can’t help but plant a kiss into his unruly hair when he passes by.
Then, he walks up to Hitoka, peering over her shoulder. “Rice cooker pancakes?”
Hitoka hums again. “They’re Kei and Tobio’s favourite, right? It’ll take a little longer to get everyone’s done but I think it’ll be worth it.”
Tadashi rests his chin atop her shoulder. “They’ll definitely love it. Do you need me to help with anything?”
Hitoka looks behind her, and Tadashi follows her gaze over to Shouyou, who still seems to be struggling with the chocolate chips.
“Maybe give Shouyou a hand?” she giggles, and Tadashi can’t help but chuckle with her.
Tobio starts his anniversary with a fall.
“SHIT!”
“OW!”
Grumbling, he tries to take stock of what just happened: he tripped over something—someone—and now he’s lying on the floor again even though he just got up. His brain is still groggy, but he’s figured out that much.
Nothing feels broken though, and whatever pain he’s experiencing seems superficial, so he thinks that’s not too bad.
“Ow...” he mumbles again, mostly out of reflex. “Sorry –”
“What the fuck!?” Kei groans, which automatically pisses off Tobio.
“Jeez, sorry!” he snaps. What the hell is Kei’s problem anyway? It was obviously an accident...
“Fuck!! That hurt!!”
“I’M SAYING SORRY, DAMN IT!”
“Is everything okay?!” Tobio looks up to see a panicked Tadashi. “I heard a crash and then both of you were yelling!”
Tobio opens his mouth to yell how their complete asshole of a boyfriend is being way too cranky in the morning, but instead what comes out is a half-growl, half-yell.
“This idiot—oof!” Kei coughs as he tries to push Tobio off him.
Tobio just growls again, sitting up to glare down at Kei.
“I said sorry, damn it!”
“What happened?” Tadashi interrupts. He still looks concerned but also slightly annoyed, the way he does whenever he and Kei get into stupid arguments.
Tobio huffs, looking away with a frown. “I tripped over this asshole by accident.”
“God,” Kei wheezes, “I think you elbowed my gut.”
“I said I was –”
“Sorry, yeah, I know.” Kei grumbles again, rubbing his torso. He turns over to look at Tobio, squinting at him with a tired expression. “Just... a painful wake up call.”
Tobio hunches his shoulders, biting his lip. It was neither of their faults, and Tobio really should have been more aware of his surroundings since he knew that everyone was sleeping over.
“It was an accident...” he eventually mumbles.
“S’alright.”
Kei reaches up to grab his neck, pulling him down for a kiss. Tobio sinks into it, morning breath be damned, because he still feels a little bad.
“Sorry, again,” he whispers against Kei’s lips. Kei just replies with a hum.
They’re pulled out of their world when Tadashi says, “Well, now that you’ve sorted yourselves out, breakfast is almost ready!”
Tobio whips head to look at him with interest, suddenly picking up the smell of what he really hopes are pancakes in the air. Nodding, he gets up before offering a hand down to Kei, who accepts it easily. Once on their feet, they both walk over to Tadashi, where Tobio and Kei each peck one of his cheeks.
“You guys!” Tadashi giggles, pushing them away. “Come on! Go brush your teeth and the rest of us can wait for you two.”
“‘Kay.”
“Okay.”
Together, he and Kei pack up everyone’s sleeping mats and pillows before making their way to the bathroom to wash up.
They’ve been in relative silence since Tadashi told them to get going, but for some reason Tobio feels the need to point out:
“Your hair’s a mess.” With his toothbrush in his mouth though, it comes out more like, W’ur h’ers a me’ff.
Kei looks at him out of the corner of his eye, mumbling around his toothbrush. “So’f your’f.”
“W’urs is me’ffier.”
Kei rolls his eyes, spitting out toothpaste to say, “I just woke up, give me a break.”
Tobio can’t help but stick his tongue out at him, which makes Kei push Tobio’s head, so Tobio shoves Kei back with his hip, and —
Outside, Hitoka calls out, “Guys! Pancakes are ready!”
They quit messing around after that.
Like many meals they share together, there’s more talking than actual eating.
Not that Hitoka really minds.
“I can’t believe we’ve been together for two years now!” She beams wildly at her boys scarfing down their pancakes. It seemed like one moment she was scared out of her mind meeting everyone, and the next she was watching them eat breakfast as their girlfriend.
Shouyou grins at her. “I know!”
“Time sure flies,” Tadashi muses with a soft smile.
Shouyou giggles. “Can you believe Tsukki tried to pretend he didn’t have our marks?”
Without missing a beat, Kei replies, “Because you guys are little shits.” He doesn’t take his eyes off his plate when he slices into another pancake.
“But we’re your little shits,” Tobio says.
“Forever!” Shouyou adds, lifting his arm up to show off his soulmarks.
Hitoka laughs quietly to herself when she catches Kei’s reaction: he looks like he’s trying not to roll his eyes out of his skull.
“We’ve been together for way longer than two years though,” Tobio says in between bites.
“That’s true,” Hitoka agrees.
Tadashi chuckles. “Haha, back before we knew.”
Shouyou hums. “I mean, I’ve always felt connected to you, Tobio.”
“Yeah,” Tobio says around a pancake slice, “and you just had to get my attention by being an annoying dumbass.”
“You jerk!” Shouyou frowns. “I’m trying to be sweet here!”
Holding back even more giggles, Hitoka watches Tobio completely ignore Shouyou. He simply takes another bite of his pancakes, looking at his boyfriend with a flat expression.
“I think it’s sweet, Shouyou,” Tadashi chimes in.
Hitoka nods. “You and Kei were like that too, right, Tadashi?”
Smiling brightly, Tadashi nods. “Mhm! We’ve had each other’s marks the longest.” He looks to Kei sitting next to him, who is still very busy with his pancakes.
“Oi, don’t you have anything nice to say, Tsukki?” Shouyou grumbles.
Hitoka is about to scold him for speaking with his mouth full but Tsukki replies, “The syrup is sweet enough for both of us without me saying anything.”
Shouyou grumbles even more. “Jeez, why did we end up with the two biggest tsunderes as soulmates?”
“Still love us though,” Tobio says.
“Forever,” Kei adds, using the same tone Shouyou used earlier when he showed off his soulmarks. He meets Shouyou’s gaze with mocking eyes, which makes Tadashi snort into his next pancake slice.
Hitoka really can’t help herself anymore. She lets out a bright peal of laughter, giggling over her pancakes. Her soulmates have the strangest ways of showing their affection, but she knows that they love each other nonetheless.
Her pancakes aren’t finished yet, but she’s never felt more full in her life.
(She doesn’t notice her soulmates sharing a knowing look with each other, smiling at their giggling girlfriend with loving eyes.)
When breakfast ends, Shouyou’s just about ready to burst from how stuffed he is. He groans, rubbing his stomach in slight agony. He’s not sure if he can move.
Mercifully, Tsukki says, “Tobio and I will clean.”
Tobio agrees with a low hum as he picks up dishes, and Shouyou sighs in relief. At least he doesn’t have to worry about clean-up. He mostly wants to take a nap now, even though he’s only been awake for maybe two hours.
“Thanks,” he moans, and Tadashi says, “Thanks, you two!”
Hitoka claps. “Thank you! It’ll give me time to set up something.”
That immediately snaps Shouyou awake.
“Set up what?” he asks, wincing at himself when he sits up a little too quickly. Around him the others also ask what Hitoka is talking about.
Hitoka only smirks to herself, pushing herself out of her seat and skipping away to her bedroom.
“You’ll see!”
About ten minutes later (and Shouyou feeling slightly better), they do see.
“Ta-da!”
Hitoka invites everyone over to her room where a large painting stands.
“It’s, um, my gift to you. For all of you.”
The painting is beautiful—abstract, with swirls of colours and patterns covering every inch of the canvas. What makes Shouyou cry out in delight, though, is that he recognizes the shapes:
It’s their soulmarks, each and every one of them.
Tobio’s simple circle, Tsukki’s textured crescent, Tadashi’s constellation, Shouyou’s sun. Hitoka’s complex flower pattern connects them all like the lines connecting the marks on Shouyou’s arm. No one is centred in the painting, but they all link together.
“Is this,” he asks, “why you didn’t want us to come in here for so long?” She wouldn’t let anyone enter her room for a long time, and now Shouyou understands why.
Hitoka nods, and he gasps.
“Um, guys?”
She bites her lip, fingers wringing together over her stomach. When Shouyou looks around, he can see Tadashi with tears in his eyes, Tsukki with a surprised look on his face, and Tobio’s cheeks flushed red. The silence must be worrying though, since the only one making any noise is Shouyou with his squawking.
He can’t help himself—he jumps on Hitoka. He pulls her in for a tight hug, squeezing his girlfriend with all his might.
“Hitoka!” he squeals. “It’s awesome!”
“Amazing,” Tobio says, and soon Shouyou can feel his arms wrapping around both him and Hitoka.
“Hitoka,” Tadashi says, and Shouyou can hear how his voice is thick with tears when he crowds close, “it’s beautiful.”
Shouyou grins, turning his head to look over at Tsukki, who’s still stunned silent. His eyes are comically wide behind his glasses, jaw dropped slightly.
“Tsukki!” he calls. “Get over here!”
He makes his way over to wrap everyone into his arms. Face buried in Tadashi’s shoulder, Shouyou barely hears him mumbling, “It’s perfect, Hitoka.”
In the middle of their giant hug, Hitoka chuckles in relief. “Thank you, everyone! I’m so glad you all like it!”
They all answer together.
“How could we not?”
“Of course we’d love it!”
“We’d love anything you make us.”
“Hitoka, it’s amazing!”
Shouyou sees tears gathering at the corners of Hitoka’s eyes, smiling brightly up at all of them, and he holds on tighter, happy to sink into the moment surrounded by his loved ones.

yama @ tsukki "Are you drunk?"
“Tsukki.  Are you drunk?”
Tadashi sighs at the offended gasp he gets over the phone and pinches the bridge of his nose.
“Why?  I can’t call my best friend at two in the morning if I’m not drunk?  You’re assuming I’m drunk just cause I called you?”
“No I was assuming you were drunk because of the picture you sent me of you kissing the tattoo on Kageyama’s hip.”
Tsukishima makes a contemplative noise - or he’s trying not to throw up Tadashi isn’t entirely sure which it is.  “Are you upset I’m not kissing the tattoo on your hip?”
“I’m not upset by you kissing or not kissing any of our tattoos.”
“But you’re upset.”
“And you’re drunk.”
Tsukishima hums over the line and Tadashi looks up as Hinata stumbles into the living room, his own phone pressed between his head and shoulder leaving his hands free to rub sleepily at his face and mess his hair up even more.
“Kageyama?”  Tadashi holds one of his arms out and Hinata crawls into his lap.
“Yeah.”  Hinata yawns.  “He’s been texting me for like an hour now.  Called me like five minutes ago.  I just wanted to sleep.”
Tadashi kisses Hinata’s forehead and nods.  “Same here.”
“Yachi?”
“I can hear her giggling from time to time.”
“Tadashi!  Shouyou!”
“Hello Yachi,” they reply in unison, both speaking into their own phones.
“Having fun?”  Tadashi asks as Hinata snuggles closer and tucks his head under Tadashi’s chin.
“Yes,” she giggles, “I wish you two could have joined us.”
“I know.”  Hinata snuffles softly and burrows even closer to Tadashi.  “But Tsukki promised he’d make sure you had fun.”
“He did?  Promise that, I mean?”
“He did.”
Tadashi snickers when he hears Yachi cooing and the sound of Tsukishima protesting and the solid thump of Tsukishima’s phone hitting something solid.
“Kageyama says that Yachi tackled Tsukishima and is giving him kisses.  It’s cute and Tsukishima’s laughing and Kageyama says he’s weirded out by it a little.”
“Tell Kageyama to give them kisses for us both and to make sure they get water before they pass out.  And to thank Tanaka’s sister when they wake up for making sure they don’t get arrested.”
Tadashi ends his call and tosses his phone to the end of the couch, shutting the light off as Hinata passes the message along.  He slides down onto the couch and tugs Hinata along, smiling to the repeated assurances of “Yes Kageyama we love you too” and “No Kageyama we’re not upset” and “Go to sleep Kageyama we’ll see you in a few days.”
Hinata has almost fallen back asleep when Tadashi laughs softly into their darkened living room.
“How much do you think Tsukki will hate himself when he wakes up and realizes he sent pictures?  I mean we all know how he gets.  But we rarely have evidence.”
“Well he gets to sleep with Kageyama and Yachi while they’re gone and we don’t so I’m sure he’ll be smug about that and just pretend the evidence doesn’t exist.”
“Good point.”
Hinata’s fingers tiredly slip under Tadashi’s shirt and trace the lines of the tattooed crows on Tadashi’s hip.
“G’night Yamaguchi.”
“Night Hinata.”

I'm just... so in love with the idea of all the Karasuno first years dating. Like they get together and have date nights, watch movies and just have a good time together. And sometimes they pair off to do things but for the most part it's all of them together, cuddling and kissing. (butterfly anon)

“Who crawls through someone’s window at 4am to go for ice cream?!” - whatever Karasuno 1st years you choose
Ezzy, never give me a choice between pairings. You know what happens when you do that.
Pairing: TsukkiYamaKageHinaYachiRating: T
The tapping on the window that woke Kei was much more familiar than it should have been. He rolled over with a groan and peeled his eyes open to glare at the figure perched on his storm drain.
“What the fuck do you want, shrimp?” he growled. Hinata huffed and finished climbing into his room, shaking a few leaves out of his hair.
“Get dressed,” he said, already rifling through Kei’s dresser. “Tobio is outside and Hitoka is getting Tadashi.”
“And where are we going?” Kei demanded, feeling around for his glasses.
“On an adventure!” Hinata shouted. Kei threw his pillow at him.
“Shut up, do you want to wake my mother up?” he demanded. Hinata only grinned and threw a pair of sweatpants at him.
“Hurry up,” he said as he climbed back out the window. Kei rolled his eyes and started tugging on the sweats.
He absolutely refused to shimmy down a drain pipe in his own house, so he joined the others via the front door. With a yawn, he slumped onto Kageyama, chin resting on the crown of his head.
“So I have a question,” he said, raising a lazy hand in greeting as Yachi and Yamaguchi joined them. “Who the fuck crawls through someone’s window at four am to go on an adventure?”
“Not just any adventure,” Hinata said. “We’re going on an ice cream date!”
“Who the fuck crawls through someone’s window at four am for ice cream?” Kei reiterated. Kageyama shrugged him off and he leaned on Yamaguchi instead.
“Come on, Tsukki,” Yamaguchi laughed. “Where’s your sense of fun?”
“It died,” Kei deadpanned. “Sixteen years ago.” Yamaguchi only chuckled and took his hand. Together they followed the other three down the street, listening to Kageyama and Hinata bicker and Yachi try to make peace.
They stopped at a 24-hour convenience store a few blocks away from Kei’s house, one Kei hadn’t even known existed. The store clerk paid them little mind as Hinata ran up and down the aisles, shrieking happily and Yamaguchi tried to keep him quiet. Kei yawned and wandered over to the beverage fridge, grabbing a couple of coffees and a carton of milk. He cracked open one of the coffees and downed it on the spot, tucking the empty bottle in with the others to pay for at the front.
“Here.” Kei jumped, barely keeping hold of his drinks at the sound of Kageyama’s voice. Kageyama started plucking bottles from his arms. “Shouyou offered to pay,” he explained. Kei shook his head.
“He can get the ice cream,” he said. “I’ve got these.” Kageyama nodded and handed him back the coffee. Kei nodded and took them up to the front to pay.
Outside, Kei sat on the edge of the curb, stretching his legs out in front of him. Hinata plopped into his lap with a scowl on his face and a sack in his hands.
“I was gonna pay,” he whined. Kei smiled and knocked his forehead gently against Hinata’s temple.
“Next time,” he said. “Here.” Hinata took his coffee and handed Kei a strawberry popsicle. Yachi settled in on one side of Kei and Kageyama sat on the other, Yamaguchi on the other side of him. Kei ate his ice cream and sipped his coffee and together they watched the sun rise.

Dumb Dumb | KageTsukki, G, 4k
NaNoWriMo Day 6: Songfic
Summary: Tobio may like Tsukishima, but that doesn’t mean he’s enjoying it.
A songfic based on Dumb Dumb (Japanese Version) by Red Velvet, which is an expanded version of a ficlet I wrote in this shuffle challenge. Main focus is on KageTsukki, but includes background poly-first years (specifically TsukkiYama and KageHinaYachi). Takes place when the first-years are second-years.
Read on Ao3
A/N: Exceptional hugs, kisses, and gratitude to @karasunovolleygays for the beta and ass-kicking (I hope I got all the epithets now???), shout-out to @omgrandomwords for throwing ideas at me, and general thank yous to Stream Team for always listening to me bitch. All other mistakes are my own.
Tobio finally notices, hilariously, at the Spring Interhigh when they’re arguing about the new quick they’ve been developing. Tsukishima had missed Tobio’s set, now furious that Tobio accused him for being at fault.
It’s late but here I am, sighing by myself Look what you’ve done, you’ve got my heart going crazy, oh
“I don’t need a pinpoint toss!” Tsukishima yells. “I’m not Hinata!”
Tobio is well aware of this fact, but he’s too proud to admit it, so he stands his ground, glaring at Tsukishima with a pout.
“Just –” Tsukishima growls, and Tobio notices his fists clenching at his side. “Just fucking toss it to me the way I keep telling you!”
“I know you keep telling me, because you won’t stop screaming in my ear about it!”
“Because it’s the only way you’d ever listen, genius!”
“Hey! Quit it!” Tobio whips his head around to see Tanaka-san yelling at them and stomping over. He tries pushing the two of them apart, but Tobio strains against his senpai’s palm, chest puffing out. He notices that Tsukishima does the same, and Tobio bares his teeth in a snarl.
Baby baby baby baby baby You play me play me play me play me play me
They always get like this: in each other’s faces if they ever want to make any progress. It’s different than when Tobio argues with Shouyou. With Shouyou, their bickering is more settled, now an almost comfortable banter about dumb things all the time. But with Tsukishima, Tobio is always on his toes, ready to push back at Tsukishima’s quick wit. Sometimes, their conversations can even be playful.
Unfortunately, in this case it means they’re chewing each other out in the middle of a match.
“I said quit it!”
The angry tone in Tanaka’s voice forces them to pause. That, and the vice-captain’s fists clenching into their uniforms.
“Keep it off the court or you’ll be benched for the rest of the season,” he warns in a low voice.
Tobio looks back at Tsukishima, who frowns at him before glaring away.
“Fine.”
They all reposition themselves on the court. Wakatani serves the ball, and Nishinoya easily receives it, volleying it to Tobio with precision. Tobio calculates the odds in the split second the ball soars in the air.
He frowns; he hates when Tsukishima’s right. He takes one look at the shithead, who answers with a nod.
Tobio sets the ball high, arching just behind the net. Tsukishima easily spikes the ball at an angle, and the crowd roars when the ref calls it as in.
“See?” Tsukishima says in a sweet, deeply sarcastic voice. “That wasn’t so bad now, was it?”
“Piss off.”
Tobio walks away, but while he does sneaks a glance at Tsukishima. He has a triumphant smirk plastered across his face, but instead of supreme annoyance Tobio feels a flicker of fondness.
He brushes off the blush creeping up his cheeks as exhaustion from the game.
Your sparkling gaze has me so dizzy My calm and collected intuition’s nowhere to be found, oh
Later that very game, Tobio notices it again. It’s a tight match against Wakutani, but Karasuno pulls through with a 28-26 win. They use the quick that Tobio begrudgingly agrees to, hollering with his senpai when it lands in Wakatani’s court for Karasuno’s winning point.
Tobio gives Tanaka-san a double high-five, then he looks at Tsukishima, who wears a pleased grin on his face, eyes alight with satisfaction.
“Yo,” Tobio says, offering a raised palm.
Tsukishima’s smile drops, but he lifts a hand to match Tobio’s.
Baby baby baby baby baby You crazy crazy crazy crazy crazy
Tobio hits Tsukishima’s hand with a satisfying smack! and when their sweaty palms meet Tobio feels an electrifying shock. He almost gasps, but manages to rein in it when their hands separate.
Tsukishima moves on to high-five Yamaguchi, leaving Tobio to stare at his open palm with confusion.
They’re all in the clubroom dressing back into their school uniforms, except Shouyou’s already finished changing and heading towards the door.
“I’m really sorry!” Shouyou whines. “Really, Tobio, we’ll go together next time, I promise!”
Standing in front of his cubby, Tobio rolls his eyes, waving his boyfriend away. “Yeah, sure, just go get your sister now.”
Shouyou gives him another distressed look but nods nonetheless. He pecks Tobio on the cheek before yelling goodbye to everyone and running out the clubroom. After Shouyou leaves, the other members begin to file out in groups, leaving Tobio and Tsukishima left to lock up as per the third year’s orders.
I’m like a mannequin Just looking at you turns me into a cringe-y mess
Tobio sneaks a peek at Tsukishima standing in front of his own cubby, clad only in his tank top and black uniform pants. He’s even taller than he was last year, his gangly frame now more toned with wiry muscle. When he lifts his arms to slip on his pullover, the tank top bares a strip of milky pale skin just above his hips. Tobio immediately averts his eyes back to his belongings.
They continue to change their clothes in silence. Tobio is normally fine with saying nothing, used to Shouyou’s loud voice filling the space so he and Hitoka don’t have to. For some reason though, he doesn’t like the silence between him and Tsukishima, and feels compelled to say something.
He purses his lips, considering his options. He tries to think of how Shouyou flirts with him, how Hitoka approaches him, if there’s any way he can possibly emulate them to extend some sort of olive branch. He comes up empty except for the one thing he hates doing: complimenting Tsukishima.
No one can stop me From dancing with awkward steps
“Y-you did good today,” he mumbles. He says it so softly he almost hopes that Tsukishima doesn’t hear him.
“What was that?”
Tobio closes his eyes, gently leaning his forehead against the cubby shelf in front of him. He clears his throat when he looks up to meet the other boy’s gaze.
“I said, ‘You did good today.’”
Sometimes, it’s difficult to tell what Tsukishima’s thinking, but now Tobio can see every emotion that passes through his face: shock, doubt, annoyance, the tiniest bit of joy, more shock.
Eventually it settles into its usual smirk. “Well,” Tsukishima croons, putting his hands on his hips, “the King himself is offering me a compliment. What, is it going to snow today too?”
Tobio glares at him, completely regretting everything. He turns back to his cubby with a huff.
“Whatever,” he grumbles. “Forget I said anything.”
Tsukishima chuckles. Tobio thinks he’s going to tease him more about being a “king” in that asshole-way he loves doing, but instead he’s met with silence. This time, Tobio doesn’t bother trying to fill it.
It’s not until the two of them exit the clubroom together, Tsukishima dutifully locking the door, that he whispers, “You too.”
He and Tsukishima are the only ones who show up in the library to study one afternoon. Normally all five of them would be together—often to tutor both him and Shouyou—but Yamaguchi apparently had to help Ennoshita-san with something, and Hitoka and Shouyou are nowhere to be found.
If Tobio had to guess, he thinks his partners are making out in some secluded, dusty corner; he has no idea if they’ll actually show up.
He doesn’t realize he sighs out loud at the thought until Tsukishima says, “What now?”
“Nothing,” he grumbles, scratching down random numbers onto his worksheet.
After a beat, Tsukishima says, “That’s wrong.”
Tobio glares up at him. “What?”
Tsukishima starts going off on a monotone rant about how he’s not going to give Tobio the answer, that Tobio should learn the material himself or else he’s not going to pass his classes again. Tobio hears none of it because he finds himself especially distracted by the way the sunlight filters through the library windows, casting Tsukishima in a partial glow. He looks back down at his homework, narrowing his eyes even more in hopes that his embarrassment doesn’t show.
I can’t help My stiff facial expressions Or the way I walk
When Tsukishima eventually finishes, Tobio huffs. “Whatever.”
Tsukishima rolls his eyes, dragging his chair closer to Tobio’s and coming into his space. Tobio, for some reason, is too stunned to stop it from happening.
“I am not going to do your homework,” Tsukishima says defiantly, “but if we’re the only two people showing up today you should at least get somethingthrough that thick skull of yours.”
Tobio can’t even bark out an annoyed reply because Tsukishima starts leaning over his worksheet. He’s so close that Tobio can feel the other boy’s body heat. He starts to write what looks like complete gibberish, none of which Tobio follows because his heart starts to race like he’s in the middle of a really good volleyball match.
Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb
It’s really weird, to say the least, feeling like this around Tsukishima. Tobio doesn’t know what to make of it so he just continues to glare at Tsukishima’s pencil dancing across his worksheet.
Then he starts to explain what he did, his voice low and somewhat soothing, and Tobio tries to relax because he really should be focusing on his homework.
Somehow, after a particularly calm and understandable explanation, Tobio begins making his way through his problem set.
The drum of my heart The giddy mood I’m in They’re already out of my control
An hour later, Tobio slams his pencil onto the table with a thunk!, raising his math sheet in the air like a trophy.
“I did it!” he says triumphantly, pushing out of his seat to stand up.
Somewhere in the distance, someone shushes him, and he blushes, taking a seat once more.
“Not yet,” Tsukishima deadpans and absolutely ruining his moment.
His hand reaches out for Tobio’s worksheet, and Tobio mumbles death threats under his breath before passing his homework to Tsukishima for corrections. He follows Tsukishima’s eyes rapidly running down the worksheet, and before long he looks up at him with a single brow raised.
“Well?”
Tsukishima hands his homework back. “Not bad, King, you finally did good for once.”
Tobio looks at him with a smug grin, chest puffing out with pride. He’s about to say something when Tsukishima cracks the tiniest of smiles.
Not a smirk either. An actual, genuine smile.
And it’s directed at Tobio.
Tobio’s brain wipes out for the rest of the tutoring session. He barely notices when Hitoka and Shouyou eventually show up dishevelled and unkempt, matching blushes on their cheeks, because he’s too busy thinking about the way Tsukishima smiled at him.
Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb...
The rest of his homework doesn’t get completed that afternoon.
Tobio twists his ankle funny during a practice match against Date Tech. It’s not bad enough to do any lasting damage, but he’s out for the remainder of the match. He’s left to pout on the bench with an icepack Hitoka hands him, their back up first-year setter subbed into the game. The kid’s not bad, Tobio knows, he just rather it’s him on the court making the plays.
He claps his hands twice, calling out Don’t mind! when the gigantic middle blocker (Aone-san, Tobio vaguely remembers) slams a spike in. The teams reset positions for Date Tech’s serve to some first-year Tobio doesn’t know the name of.
The serve messes up, hitting the top of the net, but Nishinoya-san manages to dive for the ball, saving it with his fingertips. The ball flies up at a weird angle towards Tanaka, leaving him no choice but to pass it poorly to Tsukishima.
I dream about romance movies But you have me on the edge of my seat, oh
Tobio expects Tsuksihima to bump the ball over the net, maybe hope that their opponent won’t try to pull any fast plays. Instead, he watches Tsukishima run up, sprinting towards the ball with what looks to be a hard swing. Tobio frowns, glaring at the court—it’s a shit pass (no offense to Tanaka-san), so he has no idea why Tsukishima would bother trying to spike the ball. Date Tech immediately backs up at Tsukishima’s run, calling out to watch for a hard receive.
What is this idiot doing? Tobio wonders.
Tsukishima jumps, arm swinging with rapid speed, only for his palm to lightly tap the volleyball.
“Feint!” someone shouts, but it’s too late. The libero misses the ball.
Baby baby baby baby baby You make me crazy crazy crazy crazy, yeah
“NICE KILL, TSUKISHIMA!” everyone around him begins to yell, and despite himself Tobio hollers the praise along with his teammates.
Tsukishima catches his eye at Tobio’s cheers, flashing the tiniest smile, and he blushes. Before he knows it, the game restarts, ball passed to Hinata for his serve.
Tobio repositions himself on the bench once the next play begins. He didn’t even notice that he got out of his seat.
I’m like a mannequin Just looking at you turns me into a cringe-y mess No one can stop me From dancing with awkward steps
It’s infuriating, really, how stupid Tobio feels.
Tsukishima is the most annoying person he knows. He might be even more annoying than Shouyou, which is terrifying on a whole different level.
You make me crazy Hold on a sec, I wasn’t expecting this Things have been happening so fast since the day I met you
Tsukishima makes him feel exceptionally stupid; he cannot go a day without provoking him somehow; and he literally looks down on him with every centimetre he has over Tobio.
Which is why Tobio is beyond frustrated with himself over his obviously growing crush. It’s the same way he felt—feels—about Shouyou, about Hitoka. He doesn’t know how he got into this ridiculous position, liking another one of his teammates.
You see right through me, ready to start at a moment’s notice Don’t know why I can’t read the vibe The border’s so unclear
“Oi, Your Highness,” Tsukishima calls after him, and Tobio’s heart flutters at Tsukishima’s voice. He hates this so much.
He takes a breath, looking over his shoulder to meet Tsukishima’s gaze. When their eyes meet, he can’t find any words to reply, somehow dumbstruck at how stupidly attractive Tsukishima looks when the light outside envelops him in a soft halo.
“Fine,” he snaps, pulling Tobio out of his thoughts, “don’t talk to me, but practice starts in five.” He leaves with the club door slamming shut behind him.
Tobio drops his head.
He doesn’t know how he’ll survive this.
I had my hopes up but you just keep teasing me Boy, you can’t feel me I’m here next to you hesitating at your smile And before I know it, I lose control
Practice goes by unbearably slow. Tobio is beyond relieved that he doesn’t make a fool out of himself by the time everyone breaks for free practice. He claims the net for himself so he can practice aiming while he sets.
Hitoka passes him a bunch of empty bottles when he asks for them, and after she sets them aside she leans up with her lips puckered. He meets her halfway and bends down for her to reach his cheek despite the fact he’s blushing hard. Receiving affection from both his partners is still weird for him, but it makes them happy, and he likes when they’re happy, so Tobio tries his best to let them dote on him.
“Thanks,” he mumbles, still flushed red.
Hitoka smiles at him in reply before walking away.
Tobio lines up the bottles by the net with practiced ease, and when he stands up he finds his girlfriend talking to Tsukishima at the sidelines. Hitoka easily catches his eyes and beams at him. Tsukishima just looks on with a straight face.
Then, it slowly morphs into his signature smirk.
Tobio wants to kiss the look right off his face.
That was when I went numb You’ll be my sweet love
His teammates continue to beam at him like twin suns illuminating a clear sky. Tobio turns away before he does something embarrassing like trip over the bottles he just lined up.
Shouyou and Yamaguchi are still in the baths, but Tsukishima is already in bed, fiddling with his phone with his headphones on.
Their sleeping mats are next to each other for training camp, and Tobio wants to die. He can easily ask Shouyou to switch places with him, but his idiot boyfriend is as bad as he is at picking up cues and will probably make a big scene asking why. Tobio can’t handle that tonight.
Never apart, whether we’re asleep or awake Walking a fine line between loving and hating you
He sucks up his anguish with a deep breath. He lies down, fluffing his pillow with a hard fist before tucking himself underneath his blanket. He pointedly turns his back to Tsukishima behind him when he pulls the covers up to his chin. Once he’s comfortable, he squeezes his eyes shut, trying to calm his racing heartbeat.
“Good night to you too, King,” Tsukishima says, but the pet name carries none of its usual malice or annoyance. He mumbles it so quietly that Tobio almost misses it.
I stand on my tiptoes with all my might But you treat me like a little kid again, oh
Almost. He smiles.
“Good night.”
I’m just like a robot Rigid because I need some oil My body won’t move It’s almost like I’ve forgotten how to breathe
Everyday, the five of them have lunch together. Tobio and Shouyou usually wait for Hitoka outside of her class, then the three of them meet Tsukishima and Yamaguchi in their class since they can push their desks together.
Tobio lets his partners know he’s running late, telling them not to wait and that he’ll meet up later. He checks the time on his phone, and when he realizes he doesn’t want to waste more time, he goes into a brisk walk down the hallway.
Unfortunately (or not), for some reason Tsukishima is there too.
He catches the unmistakable backside of an unfairly tall blond, ears covered by trademark white headphones.
Tobio knows he often doesn’t have time alone with Tsukishima, and because his crush is clearly here to stay, he sucks in a deep breath and catches up to him.
“Tsukishima!” he calls, jogging to his side.
Tsukishima turns to look at him with ever-judgemental eyes, but he pulls back his headphones, resting them on his neck.
“What do you want?”
Tobio frowns, glaring up at him. “I just wanted to walk next to you—is that illegal?”
Tsukishima rolls his eyes, not offering anything more. Tobio grunts, looking away. This was a stupid idea, he realizes.
“Well, what are you late for?” Tsukishima asks once they’re halfway to the classroom.
Tobio holds back a gasp, coolly answering, “Had to stay behind to talk to sensei.”
“About what?” Tsukishima furrows his brows at him. “You’re doing fine in your classes aren’t you? Or else all our tutoring is a waste.”
Tobio rolls his eyes. “I just had a question about the assignment, douchebag. I'm not failing.”
Tsukishima scoffs a laugh. “And isn’t that just a miracle?”
“Asshole.”
“Get better insults.”
“Maybe once you have better receives.”
“Shut up.”
They go back and forth in comfortable banter all the way to Tsukishima’s class, where their respective partners are waiting for them at their usual spot. Hitoka spots them first, waving them over.
“Tsukishima-kun! Tobio-kun!” she calls. “Over here!”
Tobio is a little sad to have their alone time end so soon. He slides into his seat with an internal sigh.
Usually, Shouyou and Hitoka like to sit next to each other; Tobio is fine sitting next to Yamaguchi opposite them; and Tsukishima takes the end seat at the short side of the tables. Today though, Tobio is pleasantly surprised when Tsukishima takes the seat next to him, making Yamaguchi scoot to the end where he normally sits.
I can’t help My stiff facial expressions Or the way I walk Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb
The other three give them knowing looks, but neither he nor Tsukishima say anything.
Tobio eats his bento with a blush on high on his cheeks.
Shouyou tells him to stop messing around with Tsukishima and ask him out already, so Tobio worries for almost a week trying to figure out how to confess to him.
Turns out it’s a waste because Yamaguchi and Tsukishima corner him after practice one day.
No one else is in the gym, aside from Hitoka and Shouyou discussing something at the entrance, and Tobio glares at his two teammates before him.
The drum of my heart The giddy mood I’m in They’re already out of my control Dumb dumb dumb dumb
“What?” he demands.
After a painful silence, Yamaguchi elbows Tsukishima in the side.
“Ow, Yamaguchi!”
“Not sorry, Tsukki,” he says. “Now tell Kageyama what you told me.”
Tsukishima glares at him. “You’re the worst boyfriend.”
“I am the best boyfriend,” Yamaguchi clarifies, “and you are avoiding the subject.”
The two of them return their attention back to Tobio with eerie coordination.
“You’re-you’re not that bad,” Tsukishima finally mutters, looking Tobio in the eyes. A blush blooms high on his cheeks.
Tobio frowns. What the hell is that supposed to mean?
“So?” He crosses his arms; he doesn’t have all day for this.
“He’s trying to say that he likes you,” Yamaguchi supplies with a grin.
Tobio’s stomach flips. “Oh.”
When he doesn’t add anything else, Tsukishima glares at him. “Is that all you’re going to say?”
“Well, yeah.” Tobio glares back. It’s not like Tsukishima said he liked him—Yamaguchi was the one to translate things for Tobio, so what could he possibly reply?
Tsukishima rolls his eyes. “Jeez, you suck at rejecting people.”
“And you suck at confessing.” He frowns, lip jutting out. “Besides, who said I was rejecting you?” He tilts his chin up defiantly, unfolding his arms to rest his hands on his hips.
Tsukishima rolls his eyes again. “Can you maybe not be a vague idiot?”
“Maybe you can learn to speak like a normal person.”
“That’s rich coming from you, Mr. I-Almost-Failed-English-Again.”
“Shut up, asshole!”
Tsukishima scoffs. “Maybe I should take my confession back.”
Tobio growls. “Was it even a confession? Yamaguchi was the one to say it for you.”
“Jeez, shut up and kiss already!”
Tobio doesn’t register Shouyou shouting because someone pushes him onto Tsukishima, and someone else pushes Tsukishima onto him, then they tumble into each other and their mouths meet in an awkward liplock.
Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb Dumb dumb dumb dumb...
They both gasp, eyes wide at the kiss, and Tobio immediately pushes himself away.
“Shit, sorry, I –”
Tobio doesn’t finish his sentence because Tsukishima cuts him off with another kiss—more purposeful, even softer. This time, Tobio sinks into it, eyes fluttering closed.
They break apart when Shouyou yells, “Finally!”
Tobio whips around to scowl at him. “Dumbass! Did you push me onto him?”
Shouyou’s responding laughter when he runs away is all the answer Tobio needs. He’s about to pummel his boyfriend into next week when Tsukishima grabs his hand.
“So.”
“So?”
Tsukishima looks away from Tobio’s gaze to sheepishly stare at their joined hands. Tsukishima’s other hand scratches at his neck. It’s almost unbelievable how cute Tobio finds that.
“Are we dating or not?” he finally asks.
Tobio steps into his space, pressing his chest against Tsukishima’s. When the other boy finally looks at him he leans up to press their lips together.
“Yeah,” he whispers, “we’re dating.”
They break apart again because Yamaguchi starts cheering. Tsukishima doesn’t say a word before hunting down his freckled boyfriend, and Tobio smiles after them before sprinting away to teach his own idiot a lesson.
Baby, dumb I must be... oh!

NaNoWriMo Day 17: Staple Phrases
Summary: Five times Hinata realizes he has a crush on his teammates, and one time he realized they had a crush on him too.
Literally just chock-full of fic cliches as inspired by this post and then some.
Read on Ao3
A/N: FUCKIN FINALLY FINISHED THIS FIC  \o/  UN-BETA'D BUT IDC I'M REJOICING. Shout-out to the Stream Team for constantly indulging me with fic ideas because I got so stuck on this gd fic. Chalk up any ooc-ness to the fact that fic cliches sometimes end up ooc???  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It takes a while for Shouyou to realize he may have a thing for his fellow first-years.
Like, a long while. Like over the span of months.
It should have been obvious, but Shouyou’s not the brightest, so he counts it as a win that he realized he was feeling things in the first place.
— 1: For Tobio —
The first time Shouyou notices is with Kageyama. He’s always been taller, more built than Shouyou, and Shouyou tries to reason that he was bound to find that attractive after hanging around his partner so much.
During break one practice, Kageyama stretches his arms above his head, hands curled into fists. Shouyou watches absent-mindedly, drinking from his water bottle when his eyes catches Kageyama’s shirt riding up, flashing a strip of skin. Shouyou can see his lower abdomen, where a smattering of dark hair disappears below his shorts –
Shouyou chokes on his water.
“Hinata!” Yachi exclaims. “Are you okay?”
He nods his head despite his coughing. “I’m”—cough—“fine!”
Shouyou continues to choke, hand slapping at his chest instinctively. Eventually, the coughing subsides, and he clears his throat with an apology.
“Dumbass.”
He turns to see Kageyama rolling his eyes at him, noticing that his shirt fully covers his torso once more. When Kageyama walks away, Shouyou forces himself to tear his eyes away from the setter and fails, drawn towards his partner’s ass by his body’s own volition.
He tries not to think too hard about his newfound fixation.
— 2: For Tadashi —
The next time he notices is with Yamaguchi.
The other middle blocker invited Shouyou over to his house for desserts, and Shouyou was hyped up because, duh, free sweets are always exciting!
“Thanks for coming, Hinata!” Yamaguchi says as they step into the genkan.
Shouyou mumbles a soft Ojamashimasu as they toe out of their shoes.
Yamaguchi continues, “Tsukki’s busy so I’m glad someone can try this cake for me!”
“It’s fine! Thanks for inviting me, Yamaguchi.” He smiles wide, hoping to show his sincerity.
He takes in Yamaguchi’s home: neat, small but homey. Yamaguchi walks down the hallway, waving Shouyou forward.
“Come in! The cake’s in the kitchen!”
He follows Yamaguchi into the kitchen, padding across the living room. When he sniffs, he lets the sweet smell of cake lead him.
“You can take a seat,” Yamaguchi chirps, digging into the fridge. As Shouyou slides into one of the chairs by the kitchen table, the other boy asks, “Is milk okay?”
“Sure!”
Yamaguchi places two glasses of milk on the table while Shouyou eyes the frosted cake.
“It’s strawberry shortcake!” Yamaguchi says. “Tsukki would usually share with me but, like I said, he’s busy today. Oh! Let me get some plates.”
“He’s missing out,” Shouyou mumbles, licking his lips.
Yamaguchi returns with two plates, two forks, and a cake knife. He cuts two even slices, placing a plate in front of Shouyou.
“Alright, ittadakimasu! ”
“Ittadakimasu! ”
Shouyou scoops a piece of cake onto his fork, biting into it. He gasps at the flavour.
“Woah, it’s amazing!”
Next to him, Yamaguchi moans. Shouyou immediately freezes.
“Mmm, so good!” Yamaguchi sighs, eyes fluttering closed.
Shouyou quietly watches with wide eyes as Yamaguchi eats his cake, tongue peaking out to occasionally lick his lips. Sometimes, he lingers with his lips around the fork, as if he can’t get enough of it entering his mouth. And if that wasn’t enough, his cheeks are so full that Shouyou starts to notice the freckles spread across his face, peppered like constellations in a starry sky.
Shouyou gulps, wincing when he realizes that his throat is suddenly dry.
“Hinata?” Yamaguchi says. “Is the cake okay? You’ve only had one bite.”
Shouyou snaps out of his reverie, gaze whipping to the milk in front of him. He grabs the drink, gulping it down.
“Sorry!” he mumbles. “Just, uh, thirsty.” He tries not to blush at Yamaguchi’s adorably confused expression. “It’s good though, I promise!”
Yamaguchi beams, and Shouyou hopes that his hammering heartbeat isn’t as loud as it seems.
He’s grateful that Yamaguchi doesn’t make any more obscene noises after that.
— 3: For Hitoka —
Then it happens again with Yachi.
She’s visiting Shouyou’s home for a tutoring session. Normally he and Kageyama would do them at her place, but with his mom out and Natsu home alone Shouyou had no choice but to stay. He’s grateful that Yachi agreed to make the trip all the way over to his house, and surprised that Kageyama agreed to come at all.
It’ll be good training for me, Kageyama said. Extra cardio when I walk home. Shouyou only rolled his eyes.
Now, though, Kageyama’s taking a nap on the floor. Next to him is Natsu, who was busy having her hair braided by Yachi until she also fell asleep. It’s almost gross how cute Shouyou finds it.
Out loud, he says, “Aww, I can’t believe that jerk passed out on us!”
Yachi laughs. “Well, as long as it doesn’t happen every time we study, it’s okay.” She grins at Shouyou. “I’ll make an exception for today.”
When she continues to beam at him, Shouyou gulps, averting his gaze before he says something dumb like how pretty Yachi is when she smiles.
“Hinata, are you okay?” she asks, crawling over to where he sits on the other side of the table.
Shouyou definitely does not squeak. That was totally not a squeak.
“Uh, y-yeah! Just fine!” he blurts out. He makes a show out of stretching his arms and back. “I guess I’m tired too, or something...”
Yachi hums, considering him. He tries not to gulp under her scrutiny.
“Hm, before she fell asleep, Natsu-chan said she also wanted me to do your hair.” She grins again, but this time there’s a hint of mischievousness that Shouyou’s not used to seeing on her.
“Yachi-san,” he pleads, “it’s fine, seriously, you don’t have to listen to Natsu—”
“But Hinata,” she whines, and—oh god, is she pouting now?—Shouyou is not going be okay after this, “how could I ever say no to her?”
“She’s asleep!”
“When she wakes up she’ll be very upset!”
Shouyou groans, cheeks flushing red. Yachi continues to look at him with her bottom lip jutting out, and he sighs.
“Ugh, fine,” he relents, “but my hair is nowhere near as long as Natsu’s.”
Yachi scoots over with a bag of Natsu’s hair clips before kneeling behind him.
“That’s okay! I’m not going to do anything drastic.”
She cards her fingers through her hair, and Shouyou sits as still as he possibly can. His heart races at her soft touches, delicate fingers slightly scraping his scalp. He closes his eyes, hoping to get lost in the feeling. She moves around him to place hair clips where she deems fit, not that Shouyou notices because he’s too busy trying to control his breathing.
“Ta-da!” she eventually announces. “All done!”
Shouyou releases a breath he didn’t even realize he was holding.
He slowly opens his eyes to see Yachi holding Natsu’s Ketty-chan mirror in front of him, and he tries not to grimace at the pigtails in his hair. He guesses he looks cute, definitely a lot like his sister, but that’s kinda the last thing he wants to look like.
“So?” Yachi asks expectantly. “Good enough for Natsu-chan?”
She’s beaming so brightly at him that he can’t help but smile back.
“Yeah!” he says warmly. “It looks great, Yachi.”
Later, when Kageyama and Natsu wake up to find him covered in glittery clips and brightly coloured hairties, he whines way less than he normally would at their teasing because it’s well worth Yachi’s satisfied giggling.
— 4: For Tsukishima —
He finally clues in because of the solar eclipse.
“Oh no,” Tsukishima—the giant douchebag—deadpans, “it’s starting.”
He slowly starts to lean back against Shouyou, back pressing into his face and resting his entire weight onto him. Tsukishima is basically a beanpole, but he’s a 190cm beanpole, and Shouyou can not hold up his entire weight.
They’re supposed to be warming up for their practice match but instead Shouyou is trying not to suffocate.
“STINGYSHIMA!” he yells, trying to push against Tsukishima. “GET OFF! YOU’RE HEAVY!”
“But the solar eclipse is happening,” Tsukishima says, and even though he’s drawling in his usual deadpan Shouyou can tell that Tsukishima is smiling.
Which would be a whole other problem if Shouyou wasn’t being crushed by 68kg of Karasuno’s main middle blocker.
“GWAH!! Tsukishima!” Shouyou tries again, but the bastard doesn’t stop. Shouyou growls. “I hate you so much!”
“Sucks to suck, Shorty.”
The only good thing is that Tsukishima smells nice. Shouyou doesn’t have a choice but to breathe him in because his face is pressed against Tsukishima’s back, but his teammate smells like tea, laundry softener, and also something uniquely himself. Probably sweat, if Shouyou had to think about it.
He doesn’t get the chance to because Tsukishima continues to lean back against him.
“Gaaah!! I’m gonna fall!!” he shouts desperately. His footing is already starting to slip from Tsukishima’s weight. “Tsukishima, I’m serious!!”
“Ugh, you suck,” Tsukishima retorts, but he thankfully stands up straight again.
Shouyou thought all he’d feel was relief now that he’s not supporting Tsukishima’s weight anymore, but instead he realizes he’s kinda sad. He doesn’t think he ever had that much physical contact with Tsukishima before, and while it was at the cost of Shouyou’s dignity, it was also really nice, which is both really confusing and also making his heart race.
He glares at Tsukishima, hoping to hide his growing embarrassment.
“You jerk!” he groans, straightening himself out. He quickly smoothes over the wrinkles in his uniform where Tsukishima kept squishing him.
Tsukishima scoffs, lips curling upward in a lopsided smile. It’s not quite his usual smirk, more soft and—fond? Which can’t be right because Shouyou doesn’t think Tsukishima particularly likes him, much less is fond of him.
“Hmph, I guess who have more strength than I give you credit for,” he says, and this time Shouyou picks up a hint of pride in Tsukishima’s voice, which also can’t be right because all the dickhead does is make fun of him. There’s no way Tsukishima is proud of him over something dumb like this.
Right?
He continues to glare at Tsukishima, who looks back down at him, and in their stand-off Shouyou really gets a good look into Tsukishima’s eyes. His golden orbs are alight with amusement, kinda like when he gets into those weird, flirty rivalries with an opponent’s middle blocker.
In the middle of Shouyou internally exploding at the thought of Tsukishima flirting with him, he leaves because Yamaguchi calls him away, and Shouyou is left slightly dumbfounded at this new development.
— 5: For all of them —
Somehow, he makes the connection just before Valentines’ Day.
He has a really hopeless crush on four of his teammates. He doesn’t know how it happened, but it did and now Shouyou has a choice to make:
Either ignore all of it and continue being stupidly awkward around them, or act on his feelings and hope that none of them are mad at him.
He buys them Valentines’ Day chocolate insanely stressed because he actually tries to buy something special for each of them. Chocolate chip candies for Kageyama that apparently go well with the milk he likes; simple truffles for Yamaguchi; a box-set for Yachi with a really pretty design that he thinks she’ll like; and strawberry shortcake flavoured M&Ms for Tsukishima.
It’s over-the-top and Shouyou definitely spent like a month’s worth of allowance on four different people.
But he also really, really likes his teammates a lot.
On the 14th, he skips down the hallways with his schoolbag full of chocolate, humming a silly song to himself as he deposits each gift into a locker. Surprisingly, he’s way less nervous about giving Valentines’ Day chocolate than he thought he’d be.
Then he finally finishes his deliveries, and the panic sets in. He rushes to the bathroom afterwards and hopes for the best.
— &1: For Shouyou —
On White Day, after a month full of even more fumbling and Shouyou generally acting like an idiot in front of all his crushes (and his classmates, and the volleyball team, and some of their opponents), Shouyou finds his fellow teammates standing by his locker.
He can see them from down the hall, talking amongst each other about something Shouyou can’t make out, all of them with varying shades of blush on their faces.
Walking towards them, he wonders why everyone is so tinkled pink until he notices the box of chocolates in Yachi’s hand. He gasps when he eyes the card taped on and makes out everyone’s signatures written on it.
Apparently the noise makes his presence known.
“Hinata-kun!”
“Hinata!”
“Took you long enough.”
“Hurry up so we can give this to you, dumbass.”
The four of them crowd close, pulling him into a chaotic hug that’s all elbows and squeezing, and he’s sure his skin is bruising from where the chocolate box is digging into his side.
But Shouyou wouldn’t have it any other way.

Five Flavours | Poly first-years, T, 1.3k
NaNoWriMo Day 30: Free Day Combo Shuffle Challenge, Social Media, and Dialogue-only fic.
Summary: Yet another collection of ficlets/drabbles featuring my favourite first years.
Rules: 1. Pick a character, pairing, or fandom you like. 2. Turn on your music player and put it on random/shuffle. 3. Write a ficlet/drabble related to each song that plays. You only have the time frame of the song to finish the drabble; you start when the song starts, and stop when it’s over. No lingering afterwards! 4. Do ten of these, and then post them.
TW: Canon-typical anxiety.

A/N: Decided to go with another Shuffle Challenge because I will single-handedly resurrect this meme. Apparently, I will also fill the first-years OT5 tag loooool. Un-beta’d once again and it very much shows  /o\
Gold Rays – Vinyl Pinups
They go to the beach the first chance they all get. Summer heat beats down on everything, water glinting under the sunlight.
Hitoka brings swimming tubes for her and Tobio because neither of them can swim. Kei teases Tobio endlessly about it but helps him out nonetheless when the three of them decide to go swimming.
Shouyou and Tadashi stay on the beach to build a giant sandcastle. The craftsmanship is clearly Tadashi’s doing, but Shouyou vehemently insists that he helped with the shovel work.
At the end of the day, Shouyou posts a photo on his account:

Cough Syrup – Young the Giant
Kei catches the flu because his partners are awful and spread the infection to him. He stays home from classes one day because his head cold is so bad he can’t see straight.
He lies in bed for the majority of the day, sleeping underneath his bedsheets sweaty and uncomfortable, but what other choice does he have? He can barely sit up straight, much less move around like he’d much rather be doing. Akiteru would probably drag him back to bed if he tried anyway.
He stirs up from his nap at some point, awakening to see four pairs of eyes blinking down at him. Their faces are hidden by medical masks, so their eyes are really all he sees in his fever induced haze.
“Kei-kun?” a sweet voice says. “Are you okay?”
He coughs, which seems to be answer enough for all of them.
“We brought cough syrup, Tsukki!”
“It’s on the bedside.”
“Sorry for getting you sick, I guess.”
Kei can’t distinguish the voices from each other, but he returns to sleep with the familiar, comforting sounds of his favourite people in the world.
Boy Without A Heart – Jojo
Kei is much colder than Hitoka ever realized.
Everyone warns her, that she missed the awful time when they all first began playing together and Kei was the most infuriating person they’d ever met, that by the time she came around he dialled down his angst and snark. Tadashi tries to defend him, of course, but eventually even his protests are silenced by the others.
“Yachi,” Tobio says gravely, “are you sure you want to date him too?”
“Yeah, we’re happy with Yamaguchi already,” Shouyou says.
Kei rolls his eyes, walking out the room. Hitoka takes this as her cue to follow him. She walks out the door, sprinting to catch up to Kei.
“Kei-kun!” she calls out. “Kei-kun, wait!”
He doesn’t listen, continuing to walk away. When he turns the corner without a word, Hitoka stops, slightly shocked. He’s never ignored her before.
“Told you,” Tobio says behind her, and she turns around to she see both her boyfriends catching up to her.
“He just...” Tadashi begins, struggling. “Needs time.”
Hitoka bites her lip, unable to help herself when she stares back down the path where Kei disappeared.
Love Story – Taylor Swift
Their love isn’t forbidden like in fairy tales, or romance dramas, or the cheesy light novels they all know Kei likes to read sometimes.
The five of them grappled with their feelings for a long time before they ever came to any sort of understanding, even longer until they achieved the comfortable relationship they have now. First, there were boundaries. Then, there was the fact that Kei, Shouyou and Tobio usually wanted to tear each other’s heads off if they had the chance. And, of course, Hitoka and Tadashi had their anxiety to deal with. It was a huge mess until they sorted everything out.
They couldn’t even consider the larger picture about how everyone else would feel about them, too caught up in their emotions about each other to care about what society would say. But they each knew they wanted this, were willing to put up with whatever came their way as long as they got to do it together.
The day their landlord handed them the keys to their own place—a huge apartment that could fit all five of them, their first ever home—they celebrated with a quiet night in.
Reading Letters – P.S. I Love You Soundtrack
Hitoka opens her old high school notebooks, reading letters she both wrote and received.
Bittersweet nostalgia hits her like a wave, and she smiles through her tears when she finally reaches the last page:
A photograph of all five of them.
Pretend (Reprise) – Lights
Some days, the anxiety wins.
They each handle those days differently. Shouyou and Tadashi prefer to have the others doting on them with sympathy. Tobio and Kei prefer to seclude themselves so they could sort through their feelings first, careful because they don’t want to hurt their partners in their angst. Hitoka prefers a little bit of both.
At the end of the day though, all of them want their lovers close by so they could welcome a better tomorrow together.
BG Låten [8-bit Remix] – Spelling Phailer
Shouyou naively announces having a video game competition, so Kei easily hands the other boys’ asses to them. They all knew that Kei was better than Tadashi, and infinitely better than both Tobio and Shouyou.
Hitoka was a true dark horse.
“I, um,” she squeaks, cheeks flushed red when she sees everyone’s jaws hanging, “I like to play on my phone sometimes? And I’m comfortable with consoles since I do computer stuff a lot.”
“You beat me.” Kei’s tone easily conveys his shock.
“AMAZING, YACCHAN!” Shouyou yells, jumping onto her.
The others follow him, piling on top of their girlfriend in a giant heap. She giggles, delighted to accept their congratulations.
Sour Candy – Carly Rae Jepsen ft. Josh Ramsay
Kiyoko loved Hitoka.
Hitoka was passionate and eager, anxious but headstrong. After she first recruited Hitoka, the younger girl hung onto Kiyoko’s every word like she hung the stars. Kiyoko loved watching her grow and appreciate the sport, fall in love with the team and their camaraderie.
She didn’t expect that Hitoka falls for the team in a romantic sense too.
She and Hitoka tried to make things work after Kiyoko’s graduation, but they both knew the distance was too hard for them. Their relationship ended amicably, and though it hurt Kiyoko so much more than she could have ever anticipated, she knew that Hitoka was in good hands.
She watches in the distance when the five of them pass by—hands and arms happily clasped onto one another—and smiles.
Otter Pop – Shawn Wasabi
“Here you go: popsicles! Blue for Tobio, orange for Shouyou, lemon for Hitoka, strawberry for Tsukki.”
“Thanks, Tadashi-kun!”
“F’ank yhew!”
“Thanks.”
“Mm.”
“Ah, so refreshing!”
(grin)
“Tadashi-kun, are you gonna eat yours?”
“Oh, yes!”
“What flavour did you get?”
“Melon.”
“Aw, lemme try!”
“Okay, just don’t get your slobber over it.”
“I won’t!”
“He will.”
“Shut up, Tobio!”
“Guys, can we just enjoy ourselves, please?”
(sigh)
“Apparently not without a fight.”
Best Starships Ever (Nicki Minaj vs 1D) – Remix by Mikolo Mashups
They go to the beach after graduation, inviting the entire volleyball team to celebrate the end of the year as well as wishing the third-years goodbye.
Shouyou and Tobio are in charge of games and music, Tadashi and Kei in charge of food and drinks, and Hitoka covers all planning and decorating. The first- and second-years offer to pitch in with the prep but the five of them insist on doing this for the rest of the team.
They have a wonderful time by the sea, getting sunburnt under the sky, salt and sand lingering on their skin after playing in the water. They stay until well into the night, lighting up a bonfire at Shouyou’s request.
Portable speakers blast the best pop songs of the year, and they dance around the flames with laughter and smiles on their lips.
