The dimly lit corridor echoed with the hum of a lightsaber blade and the deflected beeps of small red laser bolts as Kanan Jarrus deflected the attacks of three incessant imperial probe droids with practiced grace. But being blind and fighting opponents without a living signature in the Force, that is to say, relying solely on one's senses, could only get you so far. Especially, Kanan thought, when he couldn't seem to hit the droids however much he tried. He tried reaching for his comms three times now, each resulting in a very near miss by the probes. With a warning shooting through his skull so intensely it felt like a slap from the Force itself, he leapt to the side, slamming his back into the wall just as he sensed the three laser bolts fly in the spot he just vacated. He sighed a shaky breath of relief and raised his saber again as he sensed more attacks.
"Uh, Spectre 6 to all Spectres," Ezra's voice crackled through Kanan's wrist comm, and his heart leaped with excitement. "I see a lot of bucket heads running in the eastern port direction."
"That's our cue, Spectre 6," Hera said. "Let's pack it up, everyone. Confirm all Spectres."
Oh, thank the Force.
Kanan patiently waited for everyone to confirm they heard Hera.
"Spectre 1, confirm," Hera said.
The thought only crossed his mind that he could try to activate the comm with the Force and got the payback in the form of one of the laser bolts grazing the back of his hand. He hissed and banished the thoughts, focusing on the danger all around him again. He had to trust his friends would realize what his silence meant. Hopefully sooner than the troopers closed in.
Tumblr media
"Spectre 1 come in!" Hera demanded over the comm, eerie quiet being her only answer. Ezra was running now, following the troopers trying to guess where they were aiming to get in case the commotion was because of his master.
"Spectre 2," Ezra called into his comm. "I'm going after the imps."
"Copy that, Spectre 6. Other Spectres near the port?"
"Negative, Spectre 2." Sabine said. "Spectre 4 and 5 are closer to the Ghost. Should we-"
"No, the Ghost will be faster-..."
Ezra tuned the conversation out as he sensed a familiar presence. Kanan was hyper-focused on something, Ezra could tell. "I think I have him! Stand by!" Ezra barked into the comm.
He picked up the pace, jumping over the flat roofs, and with one fluid leap, he was falling towards the dark space port, using the Force to slow his fall and gracefully landing. "Oof..." Ezra grumbled when a painful pulse spiked through his legs.
He didn't land gracefully.
Frowning into the darkness, he picked a door and dashed through it into the baggage area. The halls were empty, the lights in only the emergency mode, bathing the white halls in an eerie green light. Ezra closed his eyes and focused. Kanan's controlled fear rippled through the Force and gave the padawan direction. Ezra vaulted across the checkpoints, and his legs carried him towards the hall to another terminal. And now he could hear him. And the droids. Indeed he could see his master now, and the four probes levitating around the blind Jedi. Ezra watched for a full five seconds as the man's blue blade swirled around deflecting the laser bolts one by one. And then he noticed Kanan was facing only three of the droids. And the fourth one was levitating a little too close.
"Kanan!" Ezra shouted, igniting his green saber and running towards the droid as fast as he could.
"Ezra," Kanan turned back with a fond smile, only for it to be replaced by tightly gritted teeth as the droid he didn't see coming sent a laser bolt straight to his shoulder.
Kanan grunted and stumbled on his feet, barely deflecting the incoming bolts. Ezra chastised the droid by a really rude name before jumping on it and running his blade through its top.
"Kanan! Look out!" Ezra jumped in front of his master, deflecting more shots while Kanan gratefully let his guard down as he spoke to his wrist comm. "Spectre 1 to Spectre 2, we need a pick-up!"
"On our way, Spectre 1."
"Sword and shield?" Ezra smirked at Kanan deflecting the bolts as he had before, finding it hard to deflect them directly at the spider-like droids.
"I'm the shield then." Kanan retorted, slurring his words, making Ezra look back at him in concern. But he didn't argue as Kanan jumped in his place. Ezra drew his blaster and waited for the right moment.
"Now!" the two Jedi barked in unison, Kanan dropping to the ground, and Ezra shooting three quick bolts right into their glowing red orbs for eyes. "Uh oh." Ezra stammered.
"What?" Kanan struggled to get back on his feet, and Ezra quickly took his flailing arm to pull him up.
"I think the droids are self-destructing." Ezra said in a panicky voice. "And aiming right for us! We need to-!"
Kanan extended both of his arms towards the droids and made a clapping motion, and the droids slammed into each other and fell harmlessly to the ground.
Ezra whistled. "How did you know they wouldn't explode?"
"I didn't." Kanan said, wiping sweat from his forehead and leaning his fists on his knees as he tried to catch his breath. Then his hand went to a smoking spot on his shoulder and gripped it with a hiss.
"Oh right!" Ezra took Kanan's hand away and tried to see the damage. "Doesn't look too bad."
"Yeah, Hera will kiss it goodbye with one of those tooka patches." Kanan laughed humorlessly.
"These things are the worst." Ezra mused, looking around for the fallen droid and dropping on his knees next to the remains, tugging at its various appendages. "Probes just carry these with them?" Ezra frowned, finding a syringe with a clear fluid.
"These what?"
"Needles. What is that about?"
"Truth serum most likely. For...."
"Mind probing. Hence the name." Ezra reached for the syringe and tried pulling it out.
"Don't mess with that thing," Kanan warned. "We should get going before the company comes."
"But we should take it with us," Ezra argued, trying to wiggle the vial free. "Could come in handy if we need to-..." Ezra stiffened as he noticed the stormtroopers on each end of the hallway. "You jinxed it!" Ezra complained to his master, while Kanan instead of answering lit his saber.
"Lower your weapons, Jedi scum!" The commander closer to Ezra demanded. "We have you surrounded!"
Ezra frowned, letting go of the syringe, but as he tried to get up, an iron grip on his collar tugged him back down, and a sharp sting in his arm made him yelp and draw his saber, slashing the not-so-dead probe, jerking the needle out. "Dank Farrik!"
Which, in turn, startled the troopers. "FIRE!" yelled the commander, and panic ensued. There were red laser bolts everywhere as the troopers frantically started firing, and the Jedi shielded. Some deflected bolts found their targets, some fired bolts found the opposing troops, and normally Ezra would've liked to have said something about that, but the dizziness settling in his body made it difficult to just focus on staying alive.
"Spectre 1! Spectre 2! Take cover!" Zeb shouted from their comm wrists, and a second later, a colorful explosion went off just behind the commander.
Tumblr media
Kanan covered his head on Zeb's request when the explosion went off, and when he reached out with the Force, he could sense some of the troopers stumble about blindly. "Sabine..." Kanan frowned at the dreamy voice saying the name. It sounded like Ezra.
"Kid? What happened?"
Ezra giggled—giggled? "Art, master, art," he spoke.
Kanan's worry deepened. He quickly reached Ezra's side and placed a hand on his shoulder. "You were messing with the probe!" he barked accusingly.
"Yeah!" Ezra said brightly, swaying on his feet. "You told me not to!" He added as if he was giving Kanan a priceless piece of information.
Suddenly, the commander's voice came through the smoke. "Fire! Fire, you useless good-for-nothing-" To the troopers' credit, they started blasting, but it was impossible not to hear the commander's squeal: "Not on me!" during it all.
Kanan drew his saber, defending both himself and Ezra, who apparently found all the commotion funny. Thankfully, Zeb suddenly charged through the troopers like a solid wall with Sabine right behind him, taking out the more fortunate who avoided Zeb's Bo rifle.
"Come on, you two! Your ride's outside!" Sabine shouted over her shoulder, tossing more grenades at the surrounding troopers, their white armor getting splashed with bright colors.
Kanan turned to Ezra, grabbing him by the shoulder to make him move in the right direction. Only for a brightly colored blinded stormtrooper to slam into his side, making the Jedi lose his balance, in turn slumping into Ezra and taking them both to the ground, knocking off Kanan's mask.
Kanan growled in frustration, ready to jump back up when Ezra placed his hand on top of Kanan's head, completely disconcerting the Jedi. "You know, Kanan," Ezra said in a serious tone. "I always wanted to tell you that you have really nice hair. Like, really nice. How do you manage it?"
Kanan stared for a complete 3 seconds before he gave into a sincere guffaw, even in the midst of battle. "I guess I've just been lucky," he replied, feeling a genuine sense of warmth from Ezra's unexpected compliment.
"Don't dig this thing though," Ezra frowned, moving his hands to Kanan's full beard. "Makes you look like an old fart."
Kanan let out an exasperated sigh, pulling Ezra to his feet. "Remind me to teach you how to resist mind probes," he grumped, dragging the kid after Zeb and Sabine.
"You're just not ready to hear the truth, master!" Ezra chirped. To Kanan's immense relief, Ezra actually drew out his saber and deflected the laser bolts coming their way, giving them not only the space to make their way to the Ghost but Kanan the opportunity to summon his fallen mask.
The four stayed on the open ramp, Sabine and Zeb shooting back at the troopers, Ezra and Kanan deflecting.
"Not what you see every day." Zeb commented.
Kanan looked at his friends in confusion.
"Oh, Sabine gave the bucket heads a paint job." Ezra explained, as they filed in, the ramp closing. "Not her best work." Ezra shrugged.
"Excuse me?" Sabine growled.
"Just saying, imps looked like they were headed to a crazy rave party, how's anyone gonna be able to tell it was us and not them having fun?"
There was a long silence before; "Okay, did he finally lose it?"
"He got hit with a truth serum." Kanan grinned.
Now it was Zeb's turn to smile. "Did he now?"
Ezra frowned and opened his mouth while pointing a finger at Zeb, but before he could say anything, the ship shook, and he lost his balance. Kanan tried to catch him and groaned in pain when Ezra grabbed his shoulder, and now both of them crumpled in a heap on the floor.
"Alright, people," Hera called from the ladder, Chopper on her heels. "Fun's over; let's give our Jedi some space."

Rex struggles against the disappointment that threatens to overtake him, but keeps his expression neutral throughout the whole time Ahsoka gives out some pointers in their training. They all seem satisfied enough with her review, thanking her for her help with wide smiles before they make their way towards the storage equipment. And—
Dammit, she’s about to leave.

“I thought you were supposed to arrive an hour ago,” Rex straightened himself up, and yeesh, the least he could have done was change out of his armour, from how the blue-striped vambraces and pauldrons stood out between them. At least, his helmet was off and nowhere to be seen. She couldn’t comment much though, not when she was from work herself.

star wars. post-empire era. original trilogy era. established relationship. rexsoka. rated G. 2.3k+ words.
Summary:
The kid’s pouting. The little jut of his bottom lip shouldn’t make him so adorable, but he is, and this six-year-old knows how to utilise it.
Good thing Ahsoka’s immune to such things; if it’s Zeb, or Sabine, or say, Rex, they’d fold the moment the big guns are out. K.O., no chance of turning back, and they’d give exactly what it is that Jacen wants because he’s got them all wrapped around his little pinky.
And in this case, it’s a Bespin cloud drop.

And In Darkness, I Stand- Chapter 3
Kallus’ leg is never quite the same after Bahryn. But then again, neither is he.
1 2 3 4  5
3. The Ghost
The day of reckoning arrives.
Thrawn appears in the doorway, and Kallus knows that it is over. The Admiral taunts Kallus with the jamming device, the Fulcrum symbol flashing across the small screen. He has failed, and at best, he will die quickly for this discovery.
But Kallus is not one to resign himself to whatever miserable fate lies ahead. He will go down fighting, and there remains a chance to warn the rebels of the danger, as cryptic and brief as the fragment of his message is.
Kallus surges forward, attacking Thrawn with all his might. The blows are rapid and unforgiving. Thrawn targets his bad leg, yet the adrenaline overpowers the pain. Still, it is not enough to overcome Thrawn.
“Your technique is good. But… limited by your training in the Imperial Academy. Predictable.”
Thrawn is quick, strong, precise. More so than Kallus, but he does not need to win and he does not need to escape.
He throws the helmet first, which Thrawn catches easily. But the blow to his legs knocks the jammer out of his hands, and Kallus crushes it beneath his boot.
It is like clockwork, what happens next. He stands his ground, he is overpowered.
Thrawn is observant, a tactical master. He knows the weaknesses of everyone around him, and how to use them to ensure that he is the most powerful in the room.
It’s no surprise, really, that a series of swift kicks are delivered to Kallus’ right leg, which is healed but not correctly, functional, but not without pain.
Kallus lands on his back and is about to rise again when Thrawn looms over him, and brings his heel down on the barely-fixed bone.
His vision goes white instantly; he’s pretty sure he screams, but that fact matters less than the poison in every cell in his body, than the agony worse than death as the bone shatters.
It is worse than ever before. It is worse than the first break and the flare-ups, and the burning sensation after field missions. It is worse than the night he couldn’t sleep, overcome by the need for more bacta, convinced that he would be better off without the leg, when he desperately wished he had just sucked it up and gone to the medbay after Bahryn.
But here he is. He cannot even think to get to his feet, then Thrawn lifts Kallus by the front of his shirt and delivers a punch to his chest, sending him flying into the night air, where he collides with the durasteel railing.
That might have hurt, he registers dully, but it is insignificant compared to the agony in his leg.
He loses.
But the message got through. He has not failed in totality, and the rebels have a chance.
-
That he lives is cruel. Thrawn tortures Kallus, hangs him up by his wrists like a slab of meat, and beats him. He asks no questions, and Kallus knows he would not break, but the lack of interrogation is still a relief.
This, he deserves. Under Imperial law, it is only fair that a traitor is punished. Kallus would take this over an interrogation, which is sure to follow after the assault on the rebels, and he can only hope that Thrawn doesn’t deign to do so personally.
He does not want to break. He hopes he dies before he reveals any secrets of the rebellion- not that they trusted their spy with much, in the first place.
At the end of the day, the rebels prevail, as is so ingrained in their nature to succeed against impossible odds. What’s more is that he apparently does have the heart of a rebel- some of their lucky nature passes to him, and he finds himself safely aboard the Ghost, thanked by Kanan Jarrus and Hera Syndulla alike. It is surreal, and strange, but for the first time in months, he is safe. At peace, even, at least for now.
But he is left alone. The rebels are making do with what little they have. They are busy, and Kallus, who once wished for the end of the entire movement and every being involved, remains in a corner of the ship that rescued him, his mind racing.
That is one benefit to it all. He’s particularly sharp now, going over what Imperial Intelligence he has memorized and can share with the rebellion. He feels little pain and can even stand, and the adrenaline coursing through his veins fuels him until the Ghost rendezvous with a rebel command ship.
He’s the last to embark, hanging back until Hera claps him on the shoulder, nearly pushing him out the door.
“Come on,” she says, nodding towards the bustling hallway. If she’s tired, she doesn’t show it, and a small smile pulls at her lips. “I’ll take you to medical.”
“I’m fine,” Kallus insists, because he feels so. “It looks worse than it is, Captain.”
“Hera,” she corrects him instantly. “And I chose to believe that if you come with me to Command then go to the medbay straight after.”
Kallus nods, because he has confronted Hera’s will a great many times and seldom triumphed. They trudge through the unfamiliar halls together, Kallus bowing his head to avoid the stares of those passing or congratulating Hera, who promises a quick debriefing then rest before reorganizing in the morning. He doesn’t imagine it will be as easily delivered to him as it will be for her, but he thinks of sleeping in a room surrounded by people he isn’t actively betraying, and perhaps talking to Garazeb soon, and the thought calms him.
A spike of pain shoots through him with his next step forward. Kallus falters, then grits his teeth and presses forward.
“Agent- Kallus,” Hera says, frowning at him. She touches his arm, gently, and Kallus is surprised at the care. “Are you okay?”
“Fine,” he promises. Every step hurts progressively more.
She regards him, wary, and Kallus pretends he does not see the concern painted across her face. However, she continues to lead him towards the command center once he takes another step without wincing.
The pain is too familiar, and logically, Kallus knows that it will overcome him soon. But if he can suppress it for now, if he can confront the Rebellion's leadership first, then he can deal with the injury, once placated by an understanding of his future with the Alliance.
Hera indicates that they're close, her montrals swishing as she peers around the next corner. Kallus inhales sharply once her attention diverts from him, suddenly aware that he'd forgotten to breathe.
She waves him on. Kallus' leg feels like lead. He tries to go through the door, and stumbles, lightheaded.
"Kallus, are you sure-"
"Yes," he wheezes, bracing himself in the doorway. Officials in the command center look up at him- he recognizes faces but can recall no names.
"Kallus-"
He stands straight up, preparing to look Hera in the eye, but his leg buckles under the weight, and he cries out in pain. She's supporting him now, her hands under his arms, and she's saying something, her green eyes filled with alarm.
Kallus tries to look up at her, assure her that he’s fine, but the hurt widens and spreads until it is burning at him yet again and Kallus cannot remember a single word he was going to say. He’s doubled over, and he can’t speak, nor see, and the agony consumes him, and he’s falling, falling- then all goes black.
-
Kallus opens his eyes slowly. His eyelids are heavy, and his exhausted body begs him to go back to sleep, But he’s here, in the Chimera’s medbay, and he’s not sure if he’s yet safe-
He blinks again. Someone is next to his cot- someone- Zeb.
The Lasat is slumped over, clasping Kallus’ hand. Kallus stirs, reaching for Zeb, and croaks out his name.
Instantly, Zeb wakes, sitting up straight. “Kal,” he gasps, leaning forward. “You’re up.”
Kallus nods, too tired to speak. His brow furrows, but two questions come to mind, and he can’t decide which to ask first.
He doesn’t know where he is, but Zeb is here, so he must be safe. That issue is resolved then, so:
“‘s my leg still there?”
Zeb looks confused, glancing from Kallus to his legs beneath the sheets. Then, he huffs out a laugh and takes Kallus’ hand again.
“Yeah, Kal, it’s alright. You’re gonna be okay, you hear me?”
Kallus nods again, satisfied. That is enough for now, and he lets his eyes slide shut.
-
He is alone when he wakes again, save for the meddroid fiddling with the tubes in his arm. Kallus groans- his head hurts, and he still feels tired, but other than that, the pain is not bad.
“Kallus,” the droid says, its overly-large eyes peering at him. “You are awake.”
“Yes,” he agrees, then groans as he stretches, running a hand over his face. There’s stubble on his chin and his beard. He’s been out for most of a day, then, possibly longer. And he’s here, on some Rebel ship, and not the Chimera. This explains the droid, which looks ancient, scratched and dented. It appears to have been taped together in more than one place, and Kallus smiles to himself.
“We know nothing of your medical history.” The droid tells him. “Although I have conducted many tests, there are still questions.”
“Okay.” Kallus is pretty sure that his questions (where is he, what day is it, where is Zeb) should have higher priority, but he is too out of it to protest, so he nods. “You may ask them.”
“Excellent.” A beat. “What is your first name?”
He laughs, a deep, rumbling sound emitting from deep in his throat. It’s been a long time since he’s laughed like that, and his voice was already scratchy from underuse. “Alexsandr,” he says, then spells it. Perhaps he is a good spy, after all. He doubts that anyone in Imperial Command knows his first name, either, though this is attributed to a lack of care rather than insufficient information.
There are a few more basic questions about his background and history. Kallus realizes that he’s in the Rebellion’s system now, and he wonders what his file says. Alexsandr Kallus. Coruscanti. Previously Agent Kallus, ISB, Fulcrum. Wanted by the Empire for ten counts of treason; wanted by the Rebel Alliance for one hundred crimes against humanity.
He snorts. The meddroid, which was turning away from him, pauses. “Can I help you, Alexsandr?”
“No,” Kallus says quickly. “I mean- yes. Do you know where Garazeb Orrelios is?”
“The Lasat? He has been here for the last twenty-four standard hours. I do not know where he went.”
Oh. Kallus feels heat flame his cheeks, and a monitor next to him beeps. His blush deepens when he realizes that his heart monitor made the sound; his heartbeat has just spiked.
“I will get a medic to speak with you about your leg.” The droid looks at the monitor, then back at him. “Do not excite yourself further.”
Kallus coughs, unable to look at the droid. “Yes,” he mutters, ashamed. “I will do that.”
The medic is a Rodian, who speaks in a soft tone and seems to barely remember where she is. This fact isn’t particularly comforting, but she is kind enough and patient with all his questions.
His right leg had a severe initial break that never healed correctly, causing weakness in his tibia and impeding the muscles and tendons in his entire leg. The strain that later followed only made this worse, and almost two days ago, the leg was shattered again- he broke both his tibia and his fibula. Bone fragments have punctured both his muscle and his flesh, but in short- it will never heal right, and Kallus will be affected for the rest of his life.
She explains that they operated on him, once Hera and two other rebels dragged him into the infirmary. It was easier to keep him under after he had passed out, and they did the best they could trying to prevent infection and further blood loss. He’s also covered in extensive bruises, including on his ribs.
“How do you feel?” The Rodian concludes, fiddling with one of the machines next to him.
“Like I could run forty klicks,” he mutters, staring down at his leg. Right now, it’s wrapped in bandages and some sort of brace.
She brustles, looking shocked. “I thought I made it clear that wasn’t possible-”
“It’s-” he sighs. “I understand.”
“Well, I-”
“Kal!” The budding argument is halted in its tracks; Zeb stands in the doorway, disheveled but grinning. “You’re awake!”
“I am.” He’s not, technically- he’s hasn’t yet attempted to sit up, but Kallus cares very little about the nuance, and Zeb makes his way over to Kallus’ bedside.
“Good.” Zeb scans him with barely-suppressed joy. “You scared us,” he admits. “Hera says you just collapsed.”
“Yes, well, the adrenaline wore off.” Kallus doesn’t look at Zeb. “I’m recovered now.”
“I know.” A smile creeps back into Zeb’s tone. “I don’t believe you can be kept down for long.”
“I can’t,” Kallus agrees, echoing Zeb’s humor.
“Do you remember anything?” Zeb stops fiddling with his pants and instead smooths out Kallus’ blanket.
“A little.” His brow furrows. “I remember that you were there for me.”
“I was.”
“The meddroid says you were with me for a full rotation.”
Zeb is suddenly very interested in a spare thread on his pants. “I was,” he mumbles, and Alexsandr suppresses another smile, glancing away so that Zeb doesn’t see.
“I didn’t want you to be alone,” Zeb continues, his shoulders slouching. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there when you woke up.”
“It’s okay.” Alexsandr didn’t know his voice could go this soft, but Zeb’s next words distract him from this point, his tone just as gentle.
“I’m sorry about your leg.”
“Don’t be.” It comes out flat, and Kallus looks away from Zeb.
It will heal. He’ll walk again, but he’ll be limping and limited. He’s going to have a cane adjusted to him tomorrow. He may never do fieldwork again.
“I am.” And Zeb sounds like it too, though his expression is devoid of pity. “Still, I thought you’d like to know that everyone in command is excited to have you here. It’s all anyone can talk about.”
“Really?” A jolt of surprise travels through him. “They don’t hate me?”
He sounds sarcastic, but Zeb looks back at him, completely serious. “You saved our necks more times than we can count. And you’re a goldmine for Imperial information.”
Right. His expression falls before he can help it. “You’re a badass ‘n a hero, Kal. That’s what they care about.”
“I’m not sure if I am. Or that I will be.” Kallus gestures to his leg, bound and immobile before them both.
Zeb’s expression softens, and he rests his hand on Kallus’ arm. “Right. I’m sure that will stop you.”
“It’s different. How can I help that?”
“So are you gonna retire? Hide in the medbay or go to the Outer Rim until the war is over?”
Frustration builds in Kallus, and he sits completely upright, clenching the sheets in his hands. “It’s not that simple! Of course I’m not going to- to kriff off and die- but I can’t walk!”
“Not forever.” Zeb amends. “And you’re one of the greatest minds we have.” Zeb glances around the empty room. “Don’t tell anybody I said that.”
“I’m a former Imperial, a spy and I have months of recovery ahead. I’m not entirely convinced people want me here.”
“I do,” Zeb says immediately, then glances away, scratching the back of his head. “I, er- well, I do. And so do a lot of other people.”
Kallus looks up at him, and Zeb meets his eyes again after a long moment. “Do you want to be here?” He asks softly.
“Yes, I do.”
“Good.” Zeb grins, but there is tenderness in his gaze. “Then you’ll put your mind to it and everything will work out.”
“You sound very confident in this fact.”
“I’m confident in you.”
---
I am distinctly aware of the lack of research that I’ve done. I’m doing my best to be canon-compliant here but sometimes I don’t have the energy to remember that a shower is a sonic and not a shower… so here we are.
Additionally, please take any medical jargon with a grain of salt. I am not a doctor, and I’m mostly going with “yeah that seems like it could happen” as far as realism goes. Nevertheless, thank you for the warmth with which this story has been received, and thank you all for your support!

SAM WITWER // have you met DARTH MAUL yet? HE is a 52 year old CIS MALE ZABRAK. they’re originally from DATHOMIR and now show loyalty to THE UNALLIGNED. they are best known for being a FORMER SITH LORD, and i hear they’re pretty INTELLIGENT yet also OBSESSIVE at times; i hope they survive the galactic civil war. (INDY, 19, EST, THEY/THEM)
the past
maul was born on dathomir during the height of the galactic republic to the nightmother talzin leader of the nightsisters a group of dark side user’s native to the planet. at a young age maul noticing the young zabrak’s potential as a small child was stolen from his mother and his family by none other then the sith lord darth sidious who trained him to be a weapon powered by sheer hatred for the jedi. he was forged into a warrior who began to excel in using the dark side of the force
eventually when his training was complete he was anointed darth maul by his master and was sent on his first mission as a sith lord revealing himself to the jedi as the first sith seen in a millennium. with his master’s command and plan in place he was on the verge of becoming one of the most powerful being’s in the galaxy
killing the jedi master qui-gon jinn maul could taste victory until he was struck by the padawan kenobi and cut in half with the only thing keeping the zabrak alive being pure hatred and a will to live unlike any other as he reconstructed his body with scrap metal in order to keep himself alive
on the edge of sanity as he ran around like a rat in the dark maul was eventually rescued from his fate of madness by his brother savage oppress. who returned him to his mother where robotic legs were grafted onto his body with the dark side of the force’s help and his mind was restored
as soon as he had recovered maul took his brother as his apprentice in an attempt to draw the man who had wronged him now a jedi master into a fight with him. killing the innocent in a play to strike him down but sadly the jedi master eluded kenobi once again managing to escape with the help of a pirate by the name of hondo who managed to save the jedi and caused men he had hired to turn on him
in a final attempt to grab power maul successfully siezed the throne of mandalore from pre vizla managing to secure the throne of mandalore and the darksaber becoming a crime lord who secured his shadow collective
finally siezing victory maul was ready to take the galaxy for his own until he was attacked by his old master who killed his brother and captured him to torture him before maul was able to escape and eventually sieze his place as the leader of mandalore once again
soon after he had retaken mandalore however maul was attacked by the former jedi ashoka tano and her allies in the form of bo-katan kryze and clonetroopers who took the fight to maul with ashoka tano defeating him in battle.
capturing the former sith lord mandalore was retaken shortly before order 66 with maul being locked in a prison designed to hold him. eventually order 66 was executed however and maul was freed by tano in an attempt to make a distraction which he took as a chance to escape
on the run the sith lord eventually founded his own crime syndicate by the name of crimson dawn which he used as an oppurtunity to sieze power in the underworld throughout the galaxy.
however his desire for revenge proved to strong and eventually he found himself on the planet of malachor where he found himself searching for an old sith weapon. running into a young jedi padawan by the name of ezra bridger his master and tano he was forced into a reluctant alliance against the empire working with them before he eventually tried to take ezra as his apprentice and blinded kanan in the process before he ran from malachor with a sith holocron
using this holocron with the help of ezra bridger to find his old enemy obi wan kenobi guiding the young jedi ezra to the planet in an attempt to protect kenobi.Maul eventually hunted for him there until he was eventually defeated by Kenobi realizing that kenobi was protecting the chosen one dying with some form of peace.
the present
maul has found himself awake in a strange desert awaking from his death surrounded by sand on all side’s with his mind drifting towards chaos. attempting to find out what has happened since his death maul has chosen to learn before he chooses a side in this conflict but before he can do that he must regain his sanity in the wake of his third death
personality traits
maul is a powered by hatred and a desire to dominate other’s wanting to sieze power for himself in the most efficient way he can being a master maniuplator knowing how to pull at the heart strings and emotion’s of enemies and allies alike

You know what's always good to come back to? Crying about STAR WARS fic because, honestly, there's a lot to cry about. From ongoing fics that keep me glued to them to fic dealing with Rebels' finale (and the feelings I need to process via fic) to post-The Last Jedi pieces that are exactly what I needed to character pieces for Leia to time travel fics that I'm clawing for more of to alternate universes where things are entirely different or echo canon in heartbreaking and/or hilarious ways to Force Ghosts, STAR WARS FIC IS THE BEST.
✦ Luminous being by stonefreeak, obi-wan, 1k     Ever since he first drew breath, the Force has been with Obi-Wan Kenobi. ✦ Drive It Like You Stole It by victoria_p (musesfool), han/leia, 1.2k     Sometimes she feels like she's nothing but wanting, and these stolen hours with Han are the only thing that satisfy her. ✦ Squad Goals by igrockspock, leia & poe & rey & rose & finn & connix, 11k     The surviving members of the Resistance decide the best way to help Leia is to take her on a recruiting mission to Rose's home world. ✦ One Last Goodbye by glompcat, obi-wan & anakin & ahsoka, ~1k     A missing moment between Ahsoka and everyone's favorite Force Ghosts during the finale. ✦ Equinox by lilyconrad, obi-wan/anakin, NSFW, sith!obi-wan, some d/s, 76.8k wip     During the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan and Anakin crash on a remote planet and take shelter in the ruins of a grand estate only to find they are not alone. ✦ The Devil's Own by lilyconrad, obi-wan/anakin, regency au, human au, 5.3k wip     Some whisper the Skywalker family is the devil’s own, and no tutors in the area will take on the orphaned Lord. ✦ Never, Not Once by victoria_p (musesfool), obi-wan/anakin, ~1k     The one person Obi-Wan's never been able to lie to successfully is himself. ✦ Open Circle by Calyss, obi-wan/anakin & cast, sith!obi-wan, 52.3k wip     Finding one single person in an entire galaxy? Harder than finding a pin in a haystack, but not impossible. Bringing back a fallen Jedi to the Light? Anakin doesn't have much hope to succeed but he will do it, or die trying. Because Obi-Wan fell for him. ✦ In Time by Ripki, obi-wan & anakin & cast, time travel, 14.3k wip     (Or the Force, frustrated and tired with all their bullshit, sends the Team to an unconventional couple’s therapy.) ✦ untitled by lurkingcrow, obi-wan/anakin, sith!obi-wan, ~1k     The first thing to remember is that Obi-Wan Kenobi Fell for the sake of another. ✦ untitled by swhurtcomfort, obi-wan & anakin & bant, ~1.1k     “Well, Obi-Wan” Bant said. Obi-Wan jolted awake from a catnap he didn’t realize he was taking when his old friend strode into the room, scrolling through a chart on her datapad. “Your blood sugar’s fine, lab results look fine, and I’m not seeing any problem with your heart readout.” ✦ And If Your Glass Heart Should Crack by victoria_p (musesfool), leia, ~1k     Sometimes, Leia feels as if she's spent her whole life grieving. ✦ Useful by igrockspock, leia & luke & han, 1.4k     To earn her place on the Falcon, Leia has to be useful, so she tries to learn everything she can. ✦ Certainty by zarabithia, obi-wan/anakin/padme, ~1k     Padmé responds differently to Obi-Wan and Anakin after their ten year separation than she did in Attack of the Clones. As a result, everyone gets a happy ending. ✦ Atoms and Space by mewgirl1995, obi-wan/anakin & ahsoka, 6k     During a standard supply run, Ahsoka, Obi-Wan, and Anakin crash land on an unknown planet. Something ominous lurks behind the seemingly innocent exterior and the three of them struggle to escape before the planet consumes them. ✦ Do Not Go Gentle by Glare, obi-wan/anakin & ahsoka & cast, a/b/o, 12.2k wip     Anakin Skywalker is only six months into his Jedi training when he goes missing on a mission, bringing his Master’s life crashing down. Unable to recover from the loss, Alpha Obi-Wan Kenobi grieves his Padawan’s uncertain fate, unaware that his life would once again be turned on end with the arrival of an Omega Sith Lord to the Temple ten years later. ✦ Tooka Trouble by DonkerRood, obi-wan/anakin & mace, 1.4k     Obi-Wan and Anakin have been turned into adorable tooka kittens by the Force. What now? ✦ Run by Selcier, obi-wan/anakin, modern au, human au, 1.1k     Sometimes, his morning run isn't enough to clear his mind. ✦ 'Destiny' Is Another Word for 'Coincidence' by ambiguously, ezra/leia (sort of) & sabine(/leia background) & cast, 8.4k     Ezra asks Leia out on a date. This is a terrible idea. ✦ An (Un)fortunate Haunting by Kooriicolada (WHM_Koorii), scarletjedi, obi-wan & anakin/padme, time travel, force ghost, 3.5k     “I refuse to listen to hallucinations.” “I AM NOT A HALLUCINATION!” ✦ A Fool's Game by Eirian Erisdar, obi-wan & anakin (background anakin/padme and obi-wan/satine), 1.6k     During the Clone Wars, Anakin and Obi-Wan find themselves trapped in a downed LAAT/i with only conversation to keep them from succumbing to their injuries. As they await rescue, what starts as a fool's game turns to startling revelations. ✦ untitled by legobiwan, yoda & dooku & qui-gon, 1.5k     Yan Dooku was getting too old for this type of thing. He had rushed into the healer’s ward, Qui-gon’s limp body in his arms. That in itself had been a feat, as the boy’s gangly limbs were everywhere, but somehow the older Jedi Master had been able to deposit his wayward Padawan on a bed before an errant arm took his nose off. ✦ Twin Hearts of Kyber by JadeLotus (Lotusflower85), obi-wan & luke & leia, 5.4k wip     Following the Battle of Scarif, Leia is able to evade the Empire and visits Obi-Wan on Tatooine to make her father's request in person. ✦ Lessons Learned by swhurtcomfort, obi-wan & anakin & ahsoka, 1.6k     The first time Ahsoka wakes, someone is there. There is a gentle hand resting on top of hers and a soft voice conversing quietly with the medical droid. Master Obi-Wan, she realizes. He doesn’t seem to notice that she’s awake. She doesn’t know where she is, but she is too sleepy to find out. ✦ untitled part 1 + part 2 by swhurtcomfort, obi-wan & anakin & rex & helix & fives & cast, 3.1k     “M’okay,” Anakin tried to shout, but it came out weaker than he’d intended. He drew in a ragged breath and tried again. ✦ Specter by Okadiah, kanan & jacen, ~1k     Kanan may have died, and yeah -- he didn't have a body anymore. But that didn't mean he wasn't around in the one way that still mattered. ✦ Strategy! by imaginary_golux, obi-wan & anakin & luke & leia & ben & snoke & cast, ~1k     The Force ghost of Anakin Skywalker has some very strong feelings about Snoke trying to groom himself a new Darth Vader, using Anakin's only grandson no less. ✦ untitled Supreme Chancellor Kenobi fic by stonefreeak, palpatine, 2.5k     The alley is dark and secluded, far down in the bowels of Coruscant’s lower districts. It’s the perfect meeting place for something like this—two people, neither of whom wishes to be recognised, conducting a less-than-legal business transaction. ✦ The Joy of Nescience by ambiguously, kanan & depa & rex(/ahsoka), 2.1k     Three times Kanan Jarrus did not want to know. ✦ untitled by legobiwan, obi-wan & anakin & ahsoka & rex & cast, ~1k     Ahsoka and Rex only hear the commotion on the other side of the room, but they exchange a look. ✦ Jinning Your Padawan by RestlessWanderings, obi-wan & anakin & ahsoka & rex & ahsoka, 1.4k     or: the one where everyone finds out that qui-gon abandoned obi-wan on a war torn planet and that the action has a name ✦ untitled by bcdroom-hymns, obi-wan/anakin, NSFW, spanking, ~1k     It would not be the first time Anakin drapes himself over Obi-Wan’s lap, but this is the first time he looks up to him with his cheeks reddened and asks: ✦ A Human Resource Problem by igrockspock, leia & ben, 1.2k     Kylo Ren captures General Organa. It does not turn out as planned.
full recs under the cut!
✦ Luminous being by stonefreeak, obi-wan, 1k     Ever since he first drew breath, the Force has been with Obi-Wan Kenobi.    This is a lovely, sort of ethereal piece, that's about Obi-Wan and the Force, so there's this sort of hazy quality to it that really works for space wizard woo-woo stuff. It's beautifully written, there's just something kind of spiritual or bright about it, with some really lovely imagery and makes me fall in love with Obi-Wan Kenobi all over again. ✦ Drive It Like You Stole It by victoria_p (musesfool), han/leia, 1.2k     Sometimes she feels like she's nothing but wanting, and these stolen hours with Han are the only thing that satisfy her.    This was a lovely look at Leia's character, that's sort of about the sex scene (which had a really lovely style to it as well! it was just pretty to read) and sort of about her relationship with Han and all around a piece about who Leia Organa is. She's complicated and messy and I love her, which this fic really hit on nicely. ✦ Squad Goals by igrockspock, leia & poe & rey & rose & finn & connix, 11k     The surviving members of the Resistance decide the best way to help Leia is to take her on a recruiting mission to Rose's home world.    This is the post-TLJ fic I didn't know I needed until I read it and it was just exactly what I wanted! It's half character-driven piece and half sort of plot-based fic, where the Resistance is picking itself back up, there's all these great little character moments, and it does some nice background worldbuliding bits and pieces. I love that it's not just about Poe (though, he's definitely a central character and he's great here, this is the Poe-needs-something-to-do fic I've been craving, too), that there's these really great moments with Leia and Rey, where Rey wants to know more about the Force and Leia's complicated relationship with it (especially after Luke's death) is difficult, and it just hit all the right notes. And then there's Poe and Leia's relationship, which is perfect for how they don't bullshit each other, but there's such care and affection there. And then Connix gets some very nice life breathed into her! And Rose and Finn and Rey get these really lovely moments! Basically, it's just a really solid, super engaing, super fun post-TLJ read that I enjoyed a ton. ✦ One Last Goodbye by glompcat, obi-wan & anakin & ahsoka, ~1k     A missing moment between Ahsoka and everyone's favorite Force Ghosts during the finale.    This was a lovely piece set during the Rebels epilogue, with Ahsoka having a moment with Obi-Wan and Anakin as Force Spirits, getting a bit of closure with them and it works so well. It's not long, but it's exactly what was needed and fits perfectly in with the story and gave me all the feelings it set out to do. Lovely and just the right amounts of bittersweet and good. Chapter 16: This is an update rec and will focus on this chapter, rather than the fic as a whole. This was an important chapter, because it was an emotional culmination in things that had been building, both since the beginning of the fic and in the latest chapters again--Obi-Wan and Anakin are about to be separated and there's a whole lot that's been stirred up in Anakin because of this. Some of it is just regular separation anxiety, now that they're in a relationship (but one that's so new and untested in Anakin's mind), being apart lends to his fears about what's going to happen, how he'll cope, if they'll come back to this when they see each other again, worry about what the Sith versions of them will get up to, all wrapped up in seeing his "twin" be so much more settled about it and that just digs under Anakin's skin, the way it has since the very first scene they showed up in. This is why Anakin staring at the ring of bruises Isten wears with pride is so telling--because, as much as he struggles against the idea, something in Anakin is still pulled towards that, pulled towards why the separation doesn't bother Isten in the same way, when it should . This is why the tone of voice Obi-Wan uses when Anakin spins out of control is important, because it's tied into the things underneath what they've said, the things that the Sith versions are echoes of, that it's not coming from nowhere, that while they're not the same people, the Sith versions are something born from what the originals want.     And I love all of it! I love that Anakin's anxiety is not so easily solved, that Obi-Wan doesn't enjoy this, but neither does he despair of it, because he's sort of used to Anakin's outbursts by now, because he cares so deeply about Anakin that he feels it with him every time. I loved that I could feel it building and building in Anakin, even with all the reassurances, because he really is like a bucket with a hole in the bottom--you can fill him up with love and reassurance, but it still drains out of him anyway. And I love that it's set off by the teeth-grindingly annoying (to him) same argument that Veris and Obi-Wan keep having, like, yes, I can just see Anakin being set off by something like that, because it's aggravating to him, because it shows that Obi-Wan's so invested in something that doesn't matter when Anakin himself is spinning out of control (never mind that different people handle things in different ways) and watching Isten seemingly not be so bothered by all of this, that Anakin's jealousy and anxiety and frustration and fear all just boil over the top in the way you can see coming a mile off, but totally get why no one else does, it really was beautifully done. And I love so much that it's been over 75k of story, that they've had plenty of time to be in this relationship, and yet it's still something to work on, Anakin's still working through these things, because they do take time, and it feels very natural and organic to the way he would keep exploding.     And, of course, I continue to love the structure, that there's a very deliberate reflection/inversion between these chraacters. It's highlighted with the bondage elements, that Isten enjoys it because it quiets his mind, that Anakin gravitates towards it because he desperately wants the same even when he has no idea how to admit to it until he has to drag it out of himself, but it's also in the little details, the way Anakin and Isten both curl into Obi-Wan or Veris, that they are so bright and brilliant and strong in the Force, that they're headstrong and stubborn and you don't want anyone else in a fight next to you, because they are powerful warriors, but there's something so vulnerable underneath that in both of them. They both storm off when upset. They both have trouble handling separation. They both have too much anxiety and noise in their head. Even the things they are the opposite in only further evidence it--the way Isten is comfortable with Veris in the depths of him versus the way Anakin slams his mind shut so Obi-Wan won't see the depths of him. The way Isten lets Veris see his naked mechanical hand, but Anakin still hides it, even when they're naked and wound together. This all further shows us what Anakin (and Obi-Wan) wants but can't admit yet, and that's why the bruises that Anakin sees are the culmination of it, why he wants Obi-Wan to do that. There's always been a pull that's inherent in him, but it's been catalyzed by seeing what Veris and Isten have.      Of course, I also love the other details put into the story--the intensity of the final scene of this chapter with Obi-Wan and Anakin was incredible , it was off the charts and they didn't even so much as kiss, they just barely touched each other and promised more later that night! Not even any dirty talk! Or lines like, he briefly marveled at the depth of his own love for Anakin, a love so strong it could live on in the heart of a man formed wholly from the dark illustrating just how much Obi-Wan loves him and how it shows that, while Veris may be abrasive to them, there's still Obi-Wan in there. And there's still the mystery of Ugly and whatever happened to the original owner THAT I HAVE NO IDEA ON, but will probably wind up being, "Yes, I should have thought of that, it makes total sense, even as I'm surprised by it." just like everything else in this fic. Ugh, so good and I don't want to end but also I want to know the ending! I just have feelings about all of it, okay! ✦ The Devil's Own by lilyconrad, obi-wan/anakin, regency au, human au, 5.3k wip     Some whisper the Skywalker family is the devil’s own, and no tutors in the area will take on the orphaned Lord.     Chapters 1-2: I could have sworn I'd done a rec for the first chapter of this fic already, but I can't find it, so I'm going to double them up for once! And, oh, I love this one already, the first chapter was a banger of an opener, there's such a sharpness to the way they interacted, that Lily is so good at writing something I can see coming from a mile off, but not the how of it, that I'm still surprised by the details and impact of it--and especially Ben's reaction to how he dealt with Anakin's introduction here. It's a sharp, clever twist of words, as well as the whole entire chapter hits this really great iddy place for me, where Anakin Skywalker is such an absolute, utter brat that it's delicious to contrast him against the more reserved, in control Ben. It hits that place in me that wants some dirty things, but also is content with just exactly how it's unfolding here, that it's not necessarily about sexy times, but just about the push-and-pull of these two characters. Which continues on into the second chapter as well, with Anakin continuing to be such a little shit, much to Ben's patience that we will see just how long it lasts (which is part of the fun).     I love that it's an AU setting, but the characters fit it so well (the use of C-3PO and R2-D2 were really great, I loved those little details) and the backgrounds and really rich, almost decadent setting I can so easily imagine for the story, all of that's great. But the writing still gets that I'm here for these characters and their relationship, the echoes of who they are in canon as put to this universe, so it's like, well, of course Ben would still be his teacher and Anakin would be way too cocky and probably vulnerable underneath that, of course sparks would fly, in that way that they aggravate each other, but that there's a chemistry there, a pull that can't be denied. I love this fic a lot already and I'm delighted to see where it goes! ✦ Never, Not Once by victoria_p (musesfool), obi-wan/anakin, ~1k     The one person Obi-Wan's never been able to lie to successfully is himself.     This is a beautiful, aching piece about the something there between these two and so often it's easy to focus on Anakin's feelings on these things because his feelings are so very, very loud, but this one really hit me in the feelings place for Obi-Wan, that he's doing what he truly believes is best, for both himself and for Anakin, for their greater purpose he's making this choice, but it's not like it's easy on him or that he does it without care. It's a quiet moment when he deniees his feelings to Anakin (but not to himself, because Obi-Wan does know himself and his obfuscation is a considered one), so that even when I personally want to yell about it, I get why he does, and so it's a beautifully bittersweet piece. Chapters 1-16: I know this fic has updated since I caught up on it/am writing this rec, so I'm basing it on these chapters, rather than the entire fic! But it was over 50k at the time and I really got sucked into it, it's just a lot of fun! What helped is that the Jedi hate is milder than I expected so I didn't have to bail on it and it just whole-heartedly embraces the Soft Sith dynamic that I love so much and is popular with Obi-Wan for a reason, as well as there's a plot running around through the fic! For those that are like me, there is some Jedi hate going on with the fic, but it's (at least as far as I've read in these chapters?) mostly contained to one scene and it's set from Anakin's point of view, so I can roll with it, especially when I get some really lovely slow burn fic and mutual pining and long-distance Force bonds between Obi-Wan and Anakin, that creeping ever more towards the two of them just being totally wrapped up in each other, because that is absolutely the stuff that sends a thrill through me when reading it in the right author's hands.     And one of the best things about the fic is how much it focuses on these characters, their feelings and what Obi-Wan is doing in the rest of the galaxy, that there's plotful stuff like him meeting with Senator Amidala and there's almost an assassination attempt, that Dooku is involved while Obi-Wan uses him to gain knowledge, and it's just really engaging and fun to read all that stuff! I tore through 50k+ in a couple of days, just happy to keep reading about these two idiots in love and the long-distance Force skyping sessions, the occasional meet-ups (Anakin insisting that he can bring his Master back, getting his ass kicked and sprawled out on the floor while Sith!Obi-Wan looks him over, the brief thoughts of how much Obi-Wan wants to touch him, just not yet, the super fun bit about Obi-Wan taking over the clones with Sith magic stuff, like, yesssss, gimme all the stuff that builds these things up, that things are building towards something bigger, I love that!) and just a whole lot of pining that's all the more delicious for how I know they'll eventually meet and hopefully Obi-Wan will bang all that noise right out of Anakin's head. ✦ In Time by Ripki, obi-wan & anakin & cast, time travel, 14.3k wip     (Or the Force, frustrated and tired with all their bullshit, sends the Team to an unconventional couple’s therapy.)     Chapters 2-6: I could have sworn I'd done recs for these chapters before, but I must not have and only thought I did because I kept mentally chanting, "Wait until there's more than one chapter to write a rec, self!" mostly 'cause I just sort of want to keyboard smash about how much I'm enjoying this fic. It's just right up my alley, where Obi-Wan and Anakin are shot through time to various moments in their pasts, ones that they don't talk about but are being used to help illustrate to each other just how much they've both been through, to help them with a greater understanding. Because of this, I'm willing to roll with the non-canon stuff (despite my usual frustration with trying to marry JA stuff to TCW stuff that it's not compatible with) because it's so good and every single chapter has that OH YESSSS GIMME THE GOOD STUFF reveals that just keep happening . The author is good enough to put off the aftermath of the reveals, that there are only pieces getting shown right now before they're pulled off to yet another point in time, that I still feel excited to get to the next one and the next one and the next one, because I trust that the conversations will happen eventually. And, in the meantime, I get to enjoy things like Obi-Wan interacting with bb!Anakin or Old Ben interacting with Anakin or Anakin absolutely losing his shit because of what he's coming to understand about their future, all of it wrapped up in the time travel stuff that hits right straight on my id. I look forward to every update and yet already there's plenty of good stuff, if you don't mind reading a wip! ✦ untitled by lurkingcrow, obi-wan/anakin, sith!obi-wan, ~1k     The first thing to remember is that Obi-Wan Kenobi Fell for the sake of another.    This is a follow-up/sister fic to Sith Anakimono , which would help to read first/at the same time, and it's a lovely piece about all that good, iddy fun stuff with the Soft Sith dynamic that I love so much! Obi-Wan and the dark and falling in love with Anakin, that the only way he might ever fall would be because of his love for someone else, someone that defined his life, fall for them, not because of them. There's a sort of lushness to the writing, something that just revels in the dark, in an understated but there way that just really worked for me, that the fic's aesthetic was just totally my jam and I loved it. “Your blood sugar’s fine, lab results look fine, and I’m not seeing any problem with your heart readout.”    This was an absolutely wonderful fic, with Obi-Wan forced to go to the healing ward, because Anakin is fretting over him and it's just such an absolute scream to read here, the casualness with which Obi-Wan treats the whole thing, the panic lacing Anakin's character, the gentle concern from Bant, none of them too over the top, but instead in line with a scene I could see in the series itself, and then Obi-Wan indulging Anakin's fussing by agreeing to lay down for awhile! Like, it clearly hits all these iddy buttons that I love , with the h/c and the characterization, how much Obi-Wan means to Anakin and vice versa, but it's also genuinely well-written and sharp and lovely to read. ✦ And If Your Glass Heart Should Crack by victoria_p (musesfool), leia, ~1k     Sometimes, Leia feels as if she's spent her whole life grieving.    Another heartbreaking Leia piece that's just the right amount of grief, heartache, reslience, and hope. This is so Leia, in how she holds herself together through sheer force of will sometimes, but also how deeply she feels these things. Every little thing that brought both comfort and pain (like, oh, seeing Chewbacca again and how they're two of the only ones left standing, it's perfect and so very sad) was beautifully done, in such a short piece that packs such a punch for me! ✦ Useful by igrockspock, leia & luke & han, 1.4k     To earn her place on the Falcon, Leia has to be useful, so she tries to learn everything she can.    One of the things that I love a lot about current SW fandom is that I've been able to find a reasonable amount of character pieces centered on Leia Organa and the complicated, difficult, often messy person she is, that there's such determination and fire there, amongst the tragedy, and this is another look at those things, as she's so tough and yet so vulnerable at the same time. I just really had a lot of Leia feelings all over again. ✦ Certainty by zarabithia, obi-wan/anakin/padme, ~1k     Padmé responds differently to Obi-Wan and Anakin after their ten year separation than she did in Attack of the Clones. As a result, everyone gets a happy ending.    Man, I really need more fic that just gleefully throws canon out the window to make everything fluffy and soft and cute as heck. And that's exactly what this fic does, it embraces being soft and skipping over all that angst and complications, to drop the three of them into bed together and sometimes my soul needs to be soothed like this! This is the kind of solid fic that I just really enjoy , like it's a balance of things I genuinely enjoy and things that are pleasing to my id--when the three of them crash on a planet and get sucked into Force visions and Anakin is the most trapped and is going to hurt them (more than they've already been hurt in the crash) if they don't pull him out of it, balancing his relationships with both of them. It's solid and good and gets what I wanted to read here, that it's Anakin waking up from his trance and realizing what he's done and curling up against Obi-Wan because he's sorry and in need of comfort, that Obi-Wan is so gentle and careful with him, despite his own strength, because this is the one he loves, and Ahsoka being adorable and a happy ending! Like, it's one of those that just makes me feel better when I read it, that's exactly what I wanted from it! Chapter 6: I've recommended this fic before, but it's been awhile, so this may be a more general rec than I usually do for an update rec! It's not a long chapter, just about 1.6k total, but it reminds me of why I really enjoy this fic, that it just goes straight for embracing the alpha/omega tropes and how protective Obi-Wan is of Anakin, who has been through hell and back, that this is a quiet moment in the story, half about Obi-Wan talking to Ahsoka, half about the first quiet real moment he manages to have with Anakin, how it indicates that there's so much work to be done on the horizon, especially because Anakin's tendencies towards jealousy and mistrust and anxiety are going to be dialed up to eleven, in a universe where he's so much more adrift. And I'm rubbing my hands in glee to get to allllll of that delicious angst and trying to work through shit, all while their biology is screaming at them. That it'll (hopefully?) go full-tilt on the possessiveness they have for each other, that there's already been marking bruises where Obi-Wan bit him and claimed him, like, yes, feed me this always, thank you. ✦ Tooka Trouble by DonkerRood, obi-wan/anakin & mace, 1.4k     Obi-Wan and Anakin have been turned into adorable tooka kittens by the Force. What now?    This was a very cute piece, just happily cracky and fluffy, as Obi-Wan and Anakin are turned into tooka cats and their instincts to cuddle take over. Cute! ✦ Run by Selcier, obi-wan/anakin, modern au, human au, 1.1k     Sometimes, his morning run isn't enough to clear his mind.    This was a really gentle, quiet sort of slice of life piece that was just kind of soft and soothing, just a moment in time that didn't need to be more or less than it was, just a piece of a bigger world that doesn't need to be more than this nice glimpse into it! And it was really nice to read for that. ✦ 'Destiny' Is Another Word for 'Coincidence' by ambiguously , ezra/leia (sort of) & sabine(/leia background) & cast, 8.4k     Ezra asks Leia out on a date. This is a terrible idea.    It's pretty much exactly what it says on the tin and yet it's much more than that at the same time, it's a really fun look at the time in their lives when these kids are teenagers and Rebels, that they're sort of dancing around each other and trying to figure themselves out and I enjoyed it for the awkwardness of Ezra and Leia trying out a date just as much as I enjoyed it for them not really having the right spark and being interesting not-quite-friends-but-something-like-it. The details are filled in nicely, there's such a smoothness to the story, there's something so good about both of these kids, they're both really trying and are both people I really love and even when they clash it's not because one of them is being super awful to the other, they're just different and trying to connect. They come from such different worlds and the fic shows that in a really cool way and what seems like it could have been a "lol throw two characters together just because!" is actually a very nicely done character piece for both Ezra and Leia. ✦ An (Un)fortunate Haunting by Kooriicolada (WHM_Koorii), scarletjedi, obi-wan & anakin/padme, time travel, force ghost, 3.5k     “I refuse to listen to hallucinations.” “I AM NOT A HALLUCINATION!”     This was a fic that was very well balanced between being utter crack and really sharp, somewhere in the vicinity of crack-treated-seriously, and that made it an absolute scream to read! The pacing and the timing of it are really sharply done, there's a ton of moments that made me smile or outright laugh, there's so much WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS from Anakin to pretty much everyone he's traveled back in time to meet with and try to talk to, most especially his past self. And I love the dynamic between Obi-Wan and Anakin especially, there's something that's just so incredibly fond underneath the banter and the frustration and the "why are you like this??" and the messing with each other, there was something so warm-hearted and just really, really fun about this piece, I cannot express my delight at that enough. Sharp and fun! My favorite things. ✦ A Fool's Game by Eirian Erisdar, obi-wan & anakin (background anakin/padme and obi-wan/satine), 1.6k     During the Clone Wars, Anakin and Obi-Wan find themselves trapped in a downed LAAT/i with only conversation to keep them from succumbing to their injuries. As they await rescue, what starts as a fool's game turns to startling revelations.    I'm a sucker for this set-up, with two characters who have a complicated and deeply caring relationship stuck in a place, with a nice dash of whump for both of them to help nudge them into needing a distraction and also because Anakin Skywalker's brain kind of starts gibbering with fear, and this was a fun one. Playing "the dumbest thing I've ever done", that they both have a sense of humor about themselves and it eventually leads to difficult conversations that they're too loopy for and it was the right amounts of light and heartbreaking. Do you know what is my favorite thing? When something just fills my heart with warmth and glee to read it! I loved the use of this prompt to make something really adorable and absolutely joyful, I loved that Qui-Gon's just high as fuck because of a medication, that Dooku is suffering beyond belief at this nonsense, and Yoda's just amused by the whole thing. It gives me my lineage feelings in spades, but also I just chuckled at everything Qui-Gon said and imagining Dooku's face throughout it and even had Yoda feelings about how fond he is of his lineage. I could totally see this having actually happened and it's just pure fun ✦ Twin Hearts of Kyber by JadeLotus (Lotusflower85), obi-wan & luke & leia, 5.4k wip     Following the Battle of Scarif, Leia is able to evade the Empire and visits Obi-Wan on Tatooine to make her father's request in person.    When I read this, I thought it was a single chaptered fic and it worked really well as an interesting oneshot where things go differently, because Leia makes it to Tatooine to meet with Obi-Wan. It's set from her point of view, so there's a lot she doesn't understand or gets wrong (about Obi-Wan's purpose here, about what the Jedi were actually like rather than fanon/propaganda about them, etc.) and I really enjoyed just how impatient she was. Not without good reason, I can't blame her, but the stark contrast between her and Obi-Wan, who seems unhurried and without care unless you actually know him, and the importance of just what else he has to bring with them, all of that has a really fun tension and it's a good look through Leia's eyes and is a fun divergent timeline fic. Oh, I love that the mods of this account know exactly what h/c hits my iddy buttons, that there's all this delicious hurt, but there's also the comfort, so it's really in balance and this one was great . Ahsoka is hurt, but not as hurt as Anakin is, and she blames herself and Obi-Wan is struggling to stay calm because Anakin being really hurt is the one thing that knocks him for a real loop, so everyone is human and hurting (it's terrible that I enjoyed so much that Obi-Wan was unbalanced by this, how he's not cruel, but he's not calm about things, either, because he's human and he cares so deeply about Anakin, that the fic doesn't have to tell us this, it shows us this, and does it in a way that's not mean-spirited, but instead true to the characters, that he's still Obi-Wan and still gentle and kind at heart, that he still works to put Anakin and Ahsoka's relationship back together, because he cares about her so much as well, and, oh, Ahsoka is so upset at what happened and Luminara and Barriss are looking out for her, then the wonderful Anakin and Ahsoka scenes--!) and I'd have read at least 50k of this fic and come back for more. I think I may have recommended this fic before, but I can't remember if I did both parts and I read it all over again recently and wanted to recommend it (again?) because I love how much the mods of this account get what I love about h/c, that the hurt's a lot of fun, but it's at its most satisfying when it's also about the comfort. That there's a good chunk of time spent on Anakin whump, how much pain he's in when he's at the bottom of a ravine, but I wouldn't have enjoyed it half as much without all the time Obi-Wan spends worrying over him, staying with him and obviously caring about him deeply. That it packs the emotional punch to go with the lovely writing all the way around, is what makes me wish I could read a 100k fic from these authors, because they're so sharp , but also so balanced. Like, read this with me: He brushed Anakin’s hair away from his face and Anakin looked so relaxed that he continued the motion, stroking the former padawan’s hair. It reminded him of how readily Anakin had melted into his arms as a young boy, and how easy it had been to soothe him with gentle cuddles. A small part of Obi-Wan missed those days. I am MELTING over here, you guys! I'm just rolling around in feelings because of this. ✦ Specter by Okadiah, kanan & jacen, ~1k     Kanan may have died, and yeah -- he didn't have a body anymore. But that didn't mean he wasn't around in the one way that still mattered.    Listen. Listen. Who cares if Kanan couldn't have become an actual Force Ghost, WHO CARES, I WANT FORCE GHOST DAD KANAN. And this fic whole-heartedly embraces that and, oh, it got me in the feelings place with Kanan watching over baby Jacen, being there for him however he could and just. Feelings! Everywhere! It's a short and lovely piece, just the right amounts of bittersweet and hopeful for what I wanted. ✦ Strategy! by imaginary_golux, obi-wan & anakin & luke & leia & ben & snoke & cast, ~1k     The Force ghost of Anakin Skywalker has some very strong feelings about Snoke trying to groom himself a new Darth Vader, using Anakin's only grandson no less.     This was a cute, totally cracky little short fic that was just fun to read, because who doesn't want to cackle at the image of Anakin just losing his shit over an evil villain preying on his grandson and just going Full Skywalker about it? Hilarious and id-pleasing fun! Do you know what I used to really hate? Anything to do with Palpatine. It's over time that I've come to appreciate him as a genuinely brilliant villain and someone who is gleefully over the top and having the time of his life and/or being hilariously thwarted, all of which this fic gives me in exactly the way I want.  He's such a deliciously, screamingly evil character that he's so much fun to read about, that he plots and plans and manipulates and betrays and backstabs people! And I love how he has so many plans here and it's just really good at capturing that cackling villain (even while I do take him seriously, which is not an easy balance to maintain) as he interacts with an OC he hired to kill Obi-Wan Kenobi. So much fun! ✦ The Joy of Nescience by ambiguously, kanan & depa & rex(/ahsoka), 2.1k     Three times Kanan Jarrus did not want to know.    This one got my attention for the Kanan and Depa opening scene and that was probably still my favorite (I love bb!Caleb so much ) but the whole fic is one big "Kanan doesn't want to know any more than he already does" and it's this great little connection to how inquisitive Caleb used to be, all those questions he had bubbling up inside him, contrasted against how HE DOES NOT WANT TO KNOW SOME THINGS, and the two tie nicely together. It's sharp and cute and funny and has some great little details and gave me back Kanan feelings all over again. ✦ untitled by legobiwan, obi-wan & anakin & ahsoka & rex & cast, ~1k     Ahsoka and Rex only hear the commotion on the other side of the room, but they exchange a look.    This was a cute and funny story about how you know Anakin was totally extra and ridiculous and how much gray hair Anakin absolutely caused Anakin over the years. ✦ Jinning Your Padawan by RestlessWanderings, obi-wan & anakin & ahsoka & rex & ahsoka, 1.4k     or: the one where everyone finds out that qui-gon abandoned obi-wan on a war torn planet and that the action has a name    You sort of have to roll with the premise of this fic, because Qui-Gon was actually beloved by these characters (and that the JA novels were never canon/are incompatible with TCW, so they don't really fit together), rather than bashing him, but when I read it, it was totally on Obi-Wan's side and it was more about ribbing Qui-Gon himself than anything else (whom I go back and forth on) and so I could totally roll with it and it's a light-hearted, silly, sharply written piece! The dialogue is a lot of fun and, setting aside Qui-Gon, what the fic does is that its aim is to make characters feel better , that it's not about being cruel, it's about making characters happy and, look, canon gives me enough of the sads and the mads, I want everyone to be happy in fic! When it's about treating my beloved Obi-Wan well and understanding how much shit he's been through, look, that is what I am here for, it's my jam, because I don't get enough of it. I want everyone to be happy, so I'm glad that Anakin and Ahsoka are so warm-hearted and adorable here, too! But, oh, man, give me everyone being happy and I'm yours , so this fic really got me in the good way. ✦ untitled by bcdroom-hymns, obi-wan/anakin, NSFW, spanking, ~1k       It would not be the first time Anakin drapes himself over Obi-Wan’s lap, but this is the first time he looks up to him with his cheeks reddened and asks:    This is a fun, id-pleasing fic that's about the enthusiastic sexy times and the kink it's embracing, it's about how much Anakin likes getting spanked because it empties the noise out of his head, that it makes him melt into a boneless heap, that it doesn't need anything beyond this to be satisfying. So I enjoyed it a lot! ✦ A Human Resource Problem by igrockspock, leia & ben, 1.2k       Kylo Ren captures General Organa. It does not turn out as planned.    I want so many Leia-and-Ben fics! So many! And this was a very nice start to scratching that itch. It's a short piece, but I love it, that it's both bittersweet and determined, that there's such hurt and pain there even as there's resilience, that they both would act this way towards each other. A lovely read that I've been wanting to see more of.

Kanera Fix-It Fic I was Talking About
Y’all thought I was joking when I said I had 3000 words of a fic all lined up to fix this, right? GUESS AGAIN. 4117 WORDS. I had to delete 90% of my original 3000 words and re-write it just now to conform to what happened in the midseason premiere, and it took me four hours, but I did it! Anyway, I put myself into the queue to make an archiveofourown account, but that’ll take a month to activate, so until then, I’ll just post this chapter-by-chapter on here. I got part 1 done tonight, and it might be a few days before chapter 2: I have college life and work that’s going to be occupying my time this week. But I’m not abandoning this. I am FUELED BY PAIN.
@secrettunnelyeah you’ve been losing your shit with me, so I hope this helps. @fluffyapplecat thanks for all your support! @commoner64 because you said “please””.  @blueboxdrifter you expressed support for this a few weeks ago, so here you go! @brickhawk you gotta help read this shit before the next chapter. I can’t post again without a second opinion.
Um, I hope you all enjoy.
Fair warning to everyone else: this is my first time posting any kind of story online, and it’s as rough as any story can be. I normally spend time editing my chapters, as any writer should, but I was just hammering it out as fast as I could to a) get it done before I fell asleep and b) to give you all a little hope after this agonizing premiere. So I’m sorry if it’s full of errors that I’m too tired to edit right now, and that the format under the cut is kind of wonky. I’m not entirely happy with the content, either–it’s kind of melodramatic and rushed for my taste, but I’m running off pure emotion right now. Hopefully I’ll find time to edit it before I before I post it on Archive. The chapter and some explanations for various things are down below. Happy readings, and everyone be okay out there!
*Writer’s Notes*
First off, I had literally 20 ideas for how Kanan would survive this premiere, and I had “explosion” down for two of them. Here, he survives by basically copying Ahsoka during her fight with the Inquisitors and Force-clapping backwards into Hera’s arms. He gets burned up and spends 3 weeks recovering in a bacta tank. No one’s going into much detail about it in the story, because they don’t want to re-imagine it all over again, but that’s what I was envisioning happening.
Second, Kanan is still blind: him getting to see Hera before he died was painful and sweet, but I honestly felt he had a lot of growth because of his injury, and it needed to stay. (And disability representation is important).
Third, I can’t start calling him “Caleb Dume”, guys, I’m sorry! I’ve spent four years calling him Kanan, and I can’t get into the habit of calling him Caleb.
Fourth, his beard and ponytail are coming back.
Fifth, I have a very large, multi-fandom, decades-long (in-universe) fanfiction world that I’m always playing with and developing to further my own writing prowess, character development, and storytelling skills. I’m going to make references to that multi-fandom work in this story (not a lot, but if there are moments where you’re thinking “where did that come from? I don’t remember that in the show or comics”, well, it might be from the multi-fandom). I’m including this story in my collection of works, and I don’t feel like editing it all over again just to include references to it. So you should all be able to follow what’s going on, but there might be a few odd moments.

Chapter 1
Hera checked her calendar again, counting down days and weeks and making notes as she went. Nine weeks ago…captured. Eight-and-a-half weeks ago…rescued. Five weeks ago, we…and four weeks ago…well, I’m now very late. I should’ve started another cycle by now. And on a regular diet for over eight weeks, with additional nutritional supplements to get back to full strength after confinement. And we’re hardier than humans; we don’t get so out of sync after missing a few meals and getting a few electric shocks. So that shouldn’t explain why I’m late. She then checked her star charts for any habitable systems nearby, and winced when there weren’t any. Should I divert our flight path to go to the nearest star system just to buy a test? No, we’re fine on other supplies, and everyone will ask questions as to why I think we need to make a stop. She would’ve killed for a certified medical droid onboard her ship in that moment, but she was out of luck. They’d left the medical system on that nameless little asteroid five weeks ago now, and they were back to their own devices out in space. Great. Just great. Gonna have to go on instinct this time. And she wasn’t liking what she was coming up with.
Hera opened her mouth to say the word out loud, but couldn’t do it. Pregnant. You’re pregnant. You’re four weeks late, and your idiot self didn’t want to think about protection after you were saved by Kanan and the others. And after what nearly happened to Kanan…
After her rescue, after telling Kanan that she loved him, after he nearly died and had to spend three weeks in a bacta tank, the minute he’d showered off and went to his own bunk to be alone, she’d slipped into his room and reiterated her love for him. Free of drugs and pain, she’d finally broken down for once in her karking life and loved him, not as a general, or a pilot, or a freedom fighter. Just him and her, together, as it should always be. To remind herself that he’d been blasted back into her arms instead of dying in the fuel explosion, that he’d survived three flatlines before they could find him a bacta tank. That he’d eventually woken up and immediately began to listen for the sound of her voice. And afterwards, curled up in each other’s arms, she’d whispered that, now that his beard had grown back and his hair was beginning to return, he’d better keep it that way. Kanan had laughed, but they’d clutched each other in the semidarkess and just listened to each other breathe. No, of course you weren’t thinking clearly. He needed you, and you needed him. But look what came of it.
Hera rubbed the corners of her eyes and tried to think past the rising panic in her gut. What am I going to do about this? Pills? A clinic visit? Which is cheapest? What’s safest and gets me back into the pilot’s seat without anyone noticing something was wrong? She thought back to the pamphlets and medical texts she’d memorized when she’d left Ryloth to strike out on her own in the galaxy. Twi’leks were always targeted anywhere one went in the galaxy, and she’d prepared herself for what to do if she was attacked and how to handle any possible outcome. But thinking about the next few steps right now made Hera’s heart hurt. A few years ago, this would’ve been an easy decision for her. Three months ago, she wouldn’t have hesitated. Today…
Hera knew why she was conflicted. Will there ever be a tomorrow? We got lucky this time—will I be next? Or will the Force finally decide to call Kanan back to wherever it is Jedi go when they die? Will there ever be a second chance for us to conceive? She hadn’t given much thought to the end of the war, to her future, but sitting next to Kanan’s bacta tank and listening to his pulse monitor for several hours a day had broken something inside her, and she’d begun to think. A mild, deserted little planet. Not dry and harsh like Ryloth. Someplace cool and wet and green. A little home, with rooms for the rest of the family. Sabine can paint the family room with murals of our adventures. Maybe little tookas frolicking on the baby’s nursery walls. Zeb can carve us furniture with all the designs of Lasat that he’s lost. Whatever he can remember. Ezra…he can have a real bed, not a bunk. And a home-cooked meal that didn’t come out of a ration pack. When was the last time he had one of those? Chopper can have a nice oil bath and shut down without worrying that we’ll wake him up for an emergency. And our baby will run in the grass and will never know war, and…
Hera swallowed back tears and controlled her emotions. You’re dreaming again, Hera Syndulla. It’s one thing to admit your feelings for Kanan and finally be open in your relationship, and it’s another thing to abandon the rest of the galaxy to pursue your selfish dream. How many people want the same dream as you? How many people have the skills and resources to make that dream come true for everyone else that can’t help themselves? Your little fantasy will have to wait. Get rid of this and get back to work.
Her heart broke as she made up her mind, and a sudden fatigue overcame her. Raw emotion? Something related to the pregnancy? She knew nothing about pregnancy, come to think of it. Or how to be a mother. What makes you think you have time to learn? Especially now? You aren’t ready for this. You know what you have to do.
Hera wearily glanced at her chrono. A few hours until your shift. When I’m back in the pilot’s seat, I can tell the others I’ve got nerve damage from torture, and that I need to see a specialist somewhere. Maybe I could say we all deserve a treat after what we’ve all been through. She shuffled to her dresser and opened the secret panel on the side to check how many credits she had left in her emergency fund. Enough for the procedure and a little left over for the others. This could work. Damn it. This’ll have to do. There will be other opportunities, Hera. Just have hope.
But it could wait. The fatigue was seeping throughout her body, fogging up her mind and turning her limbs to jelly. A few hours to nap, and then it’ll be time to call everyone. In twenty-four hours, this will all be over. A few tears blurred her eyes, and she roughly wiped them away. Either get out all the sorrow now, or sleep and cry afterwards. Hera chose the latter, and she barely made it to her bunk before she collapsed on top of the covers and sank into a deep, misery-filled slumber.
———————————-
It only felt like a few minutes had passed before Hera was startled out of her uneasy sleep. “Who is it?” She rasped. She groggily sat up and wrapped a blanket around her shoulders.
“Hera? It’s me.” Hera shivered at the sound of his voice. Every word that he spoke seemed like a precious gift after what nearly happened. But now, after what she’d finally admitted to herself, he was the last person she wanted to see right now. Or, maybe she needed him most. Can he feel it? In the Force? Does he already know? Does he know what I’m planning to do?
“Kanan.” Her voice caught in her throat, and she couldn’t keep going.
           “Can I come in? Please?”
Hera hesitated. Either you don’t tell him now, and you don’t involve him at all, or he knows what you’re planning to do. Could she do it alone? Without him? She didn’t know if it would be more painful to involve him, or to never let him know what could have been.
But Hera had made a commitment to Kanan when she’d told him she loved him, and there was no backing out of that commitment now, no matter how she’d chosen to handle her pregnancy. “Come in,” she whispered.
Kanan was framed in the light of the hall for only a second before he shut the door and crossed the distance to her bunk. He sat down next to her, his hands automatically wrapping around her shoulders; he froze when his hands met the rough fabric of her blanket. “Hera? What’s going on? Are you ill?”
Not in the way that you’re thinking, but yes. “What makes you say that?”
“Well, I…” He hesitated. “I know it’s getting pretty old for me to say it, but I feel a…disturbance in the Force. Around you.”
Hera tensed up. Oh karabast. He knows. “Tell me what you feel.” In their first years together on the Ghost, if they had time to rest, they’d park the ship in the first meadow they could find. Stretched out on the hull, in the light of the stars above, Kanan would describe the world to her as he felt it in the Force. A web connecting all living things, from the deadly dance of predator and prey in the grasses below them, the cries of the plants as they cried out for rain, jostled to and fro by the silent paws of some canid beast, to the needy, incessant hunger of newborn chicks in the trees at the edge of the meadow…
This time, she couldn’t control her tears, and Kanan’s fingers were immediately brushing them away from the corners of her eyes as soon as she sucked in a strangled breath of air. “I feel…you’re so unhappy. You’re full of…pain, and despair. Hera, I don’t understand. Why do you feel like you’re losing something?”
He doesn’t know. Oh stars, if there was only another way…But there wasn’t. She gently took one of his hands away from her face and held it in her own. “You can’t understand because you’re looking in the wrong place.”
Kanan cocked his head. “What do you mean?”
“You’re looking into my mind…” She held his hand up, paused, and pressed his fingers against the still-flat skin of her lower torso. “Try feeling here, and you’ll know why I’m so conflicted.”
Hera wasn’t sure if he felt something in the Force or if he immediately understood her implication. “Hera–!”
“Only five weeks,” she whispered. “I wasn’t assaulted in prison, so I definitely know it’s yours. And I know the date of conception. But only five weeks. Not that far along, really…” She trailed off as she noticed Kanan’s face shutting down, closing off all emotion. Oh no. She waited a few moments to allow him to process the news, to say something, anything, but he didn’t. “Kanan? Luv? Tell me—what’s going through your head right now?”
He coughed. “Do you have any water?”
“I—uh—yes. There’s a pitcher and some cups on the dresser. To the left of my ‘fresher.” He nearly banged his head on the top of the bunk as he stood up and held out his hand to feel his way along. “No, your left.”
He bumped against the edge of the dresser and winced. “Do you want any?”
This was definitely not the reaction she was expecting. “…sure. I guess.”
Kanan poured two cups of water, spilling what seemed like half the jug before he was done. Hera took the cup from him so he could have a free hand to feel his way back to her side without hurting himself further. She sipped her water while he chugged his straight down and tossed the cup aside. “Kanan. Please. Talk to me.”
He sighed. “I don’t…I don’t know where to begin.”
“I don’t either. But we have to start somewhere.”
“Well then…I suppose…did you ever want to be a mother?”
Hera sat down her cup and wrapped the blanket tighter around herself. “I wasn’t lying when I told you that I hadn’t given much thought about my future after the war. But I started thinking about it when you nearly died.”
Kanan’s breath came in a soft, weak gasp, and he pulled Hera into his arms. She melted into his embrace and felt his trembling. At least he doesn’t hate me. And he knows me well enough to know what my feelings are on this. Somehow, she allowed herself to speak about her dream life after the war: their quiet home together, the rooms for the rest of the family, their child playing in the yard outside. She felt his tears begin to run down his cheeks and drip on top of her lekku, and she knew that he could feel her sorrow in the Force.
“You know,” he said slowly. “I hadn’t thought much about kids, either. But I started thinking about them more when we found the others. Especially Ezra. We’re like their parents already, aren’t we?”
Hera chuckled, in spite of her pain. “We definitely are.”
“And I started to think…it wouldn’t be so bad, to do it all over again. But with a baby of our own…”
Hera closed her eyes and pressed herself against his chest. “But…?”
Kanan swallowed; she could feel the effort it took him. “But I know you. And whatever you choose to do, no matter my feelings…I’ll support your decision. You’re the pregnant one, after all. You’re the one at risk. Its—it’s up to you.”
           “What are your feelings, Kanan?”
           “They don’t matter.”
Hera sat back and cupped his face in her hands. “Yes, they do. I love you Kanan, and I wouldn’t have told you about this if I didn’t want to involve you, no matter what. So please, tell me your honest, true feelings.”
“Honestly…I’d love nothing more than to have a baby with you. I don’t know when we’d get another chance, with the war…”
Hera sobbed, half with relief and love, half with pain. “This damn war. It poisons everything it touches, including us. Our futures…”
Kanan started to cry again. “I know you. And I know what you want to do. I know it already.”
“I want this baby, too, but I don’t know how we’d make time. We can’t have a baby here, on the Ghost. It would be cruel just to bring it into the world and have it blow up with us in battle. Or die from some sickness.” Everyone knew babies didn’t thrive in prolonged periods in space. “And we can’t send it to my father; you know how dangerous it is on Ryloth.” She’d told him about her brother before, and he nodded. She started to cry again, and they held each other for long, painful minutes. Stang, I don’t want to do this. But I have to. What other choice do I have? I can’t leave the war. Not while others suffer. But at least I won’t have to do this alone.
But, for some reason, she felt tension in Kanan’s arms. Hera pulled back again. “What is it?” Why do you look so…guilty?
“We could leave the Rebellion and raise the baby together. Or get an abortion.” Hera made a sound of assent in the back of her throat. “Or…there’s another option.”
           “What are you talking about?”
“What if I were to leave the Rebellion, maybe with Ezra, and the two of us raise the baby while you and the others keep fighting?”
Hera gasped. “Leave? Are you serious?” Was he so upset about what happened at the fuel depot that he wants to run away?
“I don’t know how to put this into words. When I was in the bacta tank, in the coma, I remembered something. Something from…right after Master Billaba died. I’d forgotten it until I was at the edge of death. I don’t remember what happened, but… I woke up with the sense that I was supposed to die at the fuel depot.” He choked on the last few words, and Hera couldn’t have spoken if she tried. “And I feel that, whatever happened in that blank in my memory as I was running away from her body, it saved me. Not…oh karabast, I don’t know how to explain it. But whatever it was, it gave me a feeling: that I needed to leave the conflict, or else I wouldn’t get a second chance to live. For some reason, Ezra’s been getting a weird feeling, too. Not quite the same as me, I don’t think, but he’s been hinting that we need to leave and do more Jedi work away from the rest of the group. Maybe something similar happened to him when he was younger. I don’t know. I haven’t been able to ask. But…”
Hera stood up. “After everything that happened, you were just going to leave us?” Leave me? She couldn’t fault him for listening to his visions, but it stung, especially after she’d finally opened up and bared her soul to him for the first time in years. I give you my love and you leave. “Whatever happened to being careful about listening your visions? Or was that all just a bunch of Jedi nonsense you were feeding to Ezra? Hmm?”
“Absolutely not. This feels completely different from a Force vision. Like…someone physically told me these things and blocked my memory. Not the Force. Not some cosmic energy. A person.”
“So you’re going to run away because of some half-remembered whispers?”
He felt for her hand and pulled her back onto the bunk. “Hera Syndulla, I love you. I love you more than I ever knew I was capable of loving someone. And I wouldn’t leave you and the others unless I was absolutely certain that this vision was something I needed to listen to. It’s going to kill me inside to do it, but I believe it’s what must be done if we want to survive. What if there are other Inquisitors out there? And what if Vader decides to end us once and for all, especially with what happened at the fuel depot? I’m stronger now, Ezra and I both are, but we couldn’t defeat him. And I couldn’t let the rest of you be put in jeopardy because you’ve got two Force-users leaving a trail for a Sith Lord to follow.”
Hera squeezed his hand. Just a bit. “So…you’d leave? And raise the baby? Are you sure you could do it? With your blindness?”
“Ezra could be my eyes and help out. And think about it: we could keep the house while you’re all away, and you could visit whenever you wanted, and keep fighting. And you’d know that there’d always be a home for you to return to, and the minute you wanted out of the fight, we’d be there, waiting for you.”
Hera turned away. “Could you really do that? Wait at home while we risked our lives out on the battlefield?”
Kanan sighed. “I’d be happiest if you were home with us. And I want to keep fighting, same as you. But if we could make some of your dream come true this way…I’d bow out.” His voice caught, and Hera suddenly realized how hard this all was for him. “Just…promise me one thing. Could you do that?”
Hera took his hands again. “Ask me first.”
“If this war keeps dragging on…will you consider finding a window of opportunity to leave? And be with us?”
Could you do that? Leave the fight, even if it wasn’t over? But Kanan was sacrificing part of his happiness, too. He’d be worrying every day, watching their child, waiting for her to come home. And if she never did, all he’d have was their baby to remind himself of how happy they could’ve been. Hera reached over and cupped his cheek in her hand, her heart bursting with love for him. “Yes. I will consider it, Kanan, knowing that you’re waiting for me. You’re the only one who could make me leave this fight. You…and the baby.”
Kanan sobbed with joy and pulled her into a crushing hug. They cried together again, but Hera’s joy was bittersweet. Why can’t I get to fully enjoy my dream? I want to be at home with Kanan and the baby. But I can’t. Not just yet.
But this way, there was a chance to have that future, when there otherwise wouldn’t be. And Hera Syndulla’s life was never fair from the moment she was born; she knew it, and wasn’t one to dwell on it for long. Besides, there were much more wonderful things to think about. A baby. We’re having a baby. “If I don’t miscarry, that is,” she muttered to herself.
           Kanan frowned. “What was that?”
Hera wiped her eyes and looked around to find some tissues for them both. “Sorry, thinking out loud.”
           “About miscarrying?”
Hera found some tissues and grabbed them. She passed a few to Kanan and blew her nose. “Just…it would be awful for us to go to all this trouble just for me to miscarry after the stress of a fight.”
“Hmm. You’re right. Maybe we could hang back for a while and do some logistics work. At least until you’re further along.”
“I’m going to have to find a way to hide this pregnancy, Kanan. If Inquisitors are still out there, hunting down Force-sensitive children, they’ll come for our baby, I’m sure of it.” She paused. “Is there a chance the baby could be Force-sensitive?”
Kanan blew his nose and she took it from him to throw in the trash. “I don’t know. There was a pretty big taboo about getting pregnant at the Temple, if you could imagine that. But I guess there’s a strong possibility of it.”
“Then we’ll have to hide my pregnancy. No one can know about it. Well…maybe Mon Mothma. But she’s it, outside of the crew.”
“I…oh damn, I think that means that I’ll have to fake my death. Ezra, too, if he comes along to help out.”
Hera banged her head on the top of her bunk. “Ow! What?!”
           “Careful, careful—the baby—“
“A bruised lek won’t kill the baby, Kanan. But faking your death—“
“Well, that’s what we’ll have to do if we want to make sure we’re not tracked down. If everyone believes without a shadow of a doubt that we’re gone, no one will come looking for us. And your “grief” will give you an excuse to pull back for a few months, while you need to hide the bump.” Kanan suddenly moved off the bed and ran to the tiny ‘fresher.
“Kanan!” But he waved her away, and she hung back, waiting until he was done vomiting. Then, she found a rag and wet it from the remaining water in the jug. She went over to Kanan, who was still slumped over the toilet. She pulled him away from the bowl and gently began wiping his face. “I’m the one who’s supposed to be getting morning sickness, remember?”
He snorted, but let her keep tending him. “It’s just…we’re going to have to make sure everyone thinks, beyond a doubt, that we’re dead. And that means leaving no body— ” He turned around to retch again, but nothing came up. “And that means—fire, and explosions—“
“Oh, Kanan…” She held him until the panic attack—or flashback, whatever it was—subsided, and he’d calmed down again. “We’ll find a way to make it work. A safe way. If there’s anyone who could do it, it would be Sabine.”
“And how could I do that to Ezra? Put him at risk like that?”
“Well, we have to tell him about the baby, first. We’ll have to tell everyone. But, for right now, let’s just go lie down.” She helped him to his feet and into her bed. They crawled under the covers together, and Hera settled comfortably into his arms. I don’t know how I lived without this for so long. This feels so right, to be here with him.
Kanan’s eyes were drooping. “Don’t you have a shift soon?”
Hera’s fatigue was setting in again. “I’ll just tell one of the others that I have a call to take from someone in Rebel command. They’ll understand. Or Chopper can take the shift.” She yawned and couldn’t keep her eyes open. “I’ll deal with it later.”
They fell asleep, wary about the future, but both full to the brim with love for each other and the life beginning in Hera’s body.
—————————-
Okay, so I promise that this story is going to get happier, okay? There’s just a lot of depressing stuff that needs to be ironed out in this first chapter. It’s not going to be all sunshine and roses, but it will have a happy ending.
I also was originally going to have Kanan and Ezra faking their deaths by pretending to blow up when the rebels attacked a weapons supply store. They were going to dig tunnels underneath and be well-away before the explosion happened, but were going to pretend to be killed by the fire/explosion/falling debris. It hits so close to home in light of the midseason premiere that I don’t know if I can do it.
Or maybe I will. Because I’m kind of sadistic.
Also, the reference to Kanan being “warned” to escape is the reference to my multi-fandom story. There’s some Prisoner of Azkaban-level time travel shenanigans that go on, but it’s not “adult Kanan visits ‘lil Caleb”. It’s a lot more complicated and I don’t feel comfortable explaining it.

Messy Thoughts on Zero Hour
spoilers and a long post, you’ve been warned
Part I
love that opening shot of the twin moons. a pretty obvious callback to the previous episode, which is nice
a heavy rendition of thrawn’s theme, which prepares us for what’s to come
of all the brilliant plans, who ever thought of hijacking a mouse droid?? well done kallus, you’re a true spy
wow thrawn must truly love grandeur if he’s putting in so much effort into “hiding” from a rebel spy he knows is listening
did he tell konstantine about kallus?? konstantine sounds so confused, and why would thrawn withhold that information from him? he knows he’s not the spy... maybe thrawn just likes toying with konstantine
that look of shock and concern on kallus’s face... he’s come so far and he’s a true rebel now
oh my goodness things seemed so peaceful on atollon but that changed so quickly
i love that spacedad-spaceson talk oh my goodness
it’s been so long since they had a conversation like that, i missed it so much
look at all those ships soon to be gunned down
kriff someone should tell general dodonnna never to speak wishful thinking aloud
wow thrawn is a true drama queen, second only to darth vader
OUCH okay those were quite a few solid blows
what the... what did thrawn do to kallus in that small skip? when did his hair get all mussed up? and the bruise around his eye?? the cut on his lip?? that couldn’t have all been from that fight thrawn what did you do to my son
what the kriff thrawn had a slideshow prepared and everything
maybe kallus tried looking for the base himself too, that’s why he thinks there’s no base
ohhh kriffff the pain on kallus’s face when he realised he was the one who revealed the rebels’ location and that it was ultimately his fault
thrawn kept true to his word... he did use fulcrum against the rebellion
there’s the promo clip
WHAT HAPPENED TO RYDER
so i guess they’re delaying the attack on lothal
ohh the gravity wells from stealth strike
i don’t know much about thrawn’s history, but what makes him want the rebels to feel defeat so much?
hera is a true military tactician, did anyone else see how quickly she figured a way to turn the tables??
did kanan not tell hera about the bendu?? wow so much for the trust of a spacemarried couple
love that rex-zeb dynamic! two veteran leaders just bantering...
thrawn knows wayyyy too much about his enemies
you can feel the immediate tension between konstantine and thrawn wow
thrawn sounds so lofty here, as if he can’t be bothered to deal with ambitious underlings like konstantine
kriff they’re taking heavy fire everywhere
i love the way they animated bendu’s eyes in this scene. they only reflect one speck of white light each, and beyond his dialogue, tone and gestures, you can tell he’s mad
same kanan, i’m just as done
fpj, bless you and your voice acting skills. your performance is amazing here. they beautifully convey kanan’s frustration towards the bendu
man you can tell kanan’s striking a nerve
oh kriff the screams of the unnamed pilot who blew up... that’s a somber reminder that real people are dying
sato no sato no sato n o n o n o
kriff he’s gonna do it
i’m crying over those two unnamed brave souls who decided to stay with sato
i can’t watch this
good job konstantine you’re falling for sato’s trick
but beyond that konstantine showed his fatal weakness here: his desire for glory
it’s been hinted at since the beginning of season 3, when thrawn came into command
you can tell he’s grown tired of thrawn being in charge and want to snatch the glory for himself
wow twenty episodes later and konstantine’s still salty that thrawn’s a grand admiral
rip sato, his two loyal staff, and konstantine, thank you for your service
don’t worry sato i’m sure filoni will make your nephew mart step up
kallus’s shock oh my goodness
was he shocked at the violence or that sato sacrificed so much? he shouldn’t be so shocked tbh, he’s the one who risked everything as fulcrum
“petty battles” that’s nice bendu
weather-conjuring powers?
glowing eyes??
vanishing???
bendu what even are you how powerful can you get
YES BEAN’S COMING BACK
kriff that was an emotional rollercoaster if anything
Part II
“sabine’s baby” did i ever mention how much i love her
hera’s so worried about kanan aaaaaa
go faster kanan please
i love how they used the shield generator from ghosts of geonosis. it helped so much
thrawn’s theme as he fires upon the base is intimidating and absolutely terrifying
he’s making kallus watch as he destroys everything he’s tried to build up
the look of relief on hera’s face when she hears kanan again
“i have the feeling thrawn’s actually trying to kill us this time” you got that right, kanan
first time i’ve heard hera’s nervous laughter and i empathise
can’t leave the mask of course
WE’RE GONNA SEE SABINE
HEY LOOK THE LAKE IS MELTING LIKE I PREDICTED
wow i didn’t think i’d be so glad to see all the mandos again
now that he’s a rebel kallus now deserves the honour of snark and laughingly taunting his colleagues
the civil war’s happeningggg just not in this season
ezra’s so done with people not being willing or able to help
did... sabine paint one of tristan’s shoulder guards?
DID SABINE PAINT ONE OF TRISTAN’S SHOULDER GUARDS???
OH YES SHE DID
IT’S A CAT
i guess she couldn’t go so long without painting something
nice shot zeb
dang it thrawn always surpasses my expectations he’s so kriffing smart
what the... it can be entered?? that is one huge design flaw
HI WEDGE
also never underestimate the space dad
woah okay thrawn’s ground assault plan was so successful
it only began to fail when a cosmic entity fought him
for someone who appreciates art, thrawn could afford to begin the jedi mythology
woahhh bendu pulling all the stops i see
he also needs to chill
wait so do they have random space suits laying around now?
well i think those thrusters are the closest thing you’re gonna get to a jetpack, ezra
better listen to the bendu, everyone
ap-5′s frantic walk though, i don’t think his model was built to run
hoho bendu’s mad
what a nice love tap
oops you made hera mad too
kanan you know she’s the one person you shouldn’t anger look what happened to josh gad
thrawn just get away from atollon
wait firing on the bendu worked?? he could’ve just deflected the blasters with lighting or something
well done ezra and sabine!! i missed seeing them work together and blow stuff up
be careful of what emotion can make you do, pryce
oh too late
throw him out of the airlock? couldn’t you just shoot him?
that smirk hehe
smirk no. 2 hoho get rekt stormtroopers
ezra you make your mom proud
HAH good job kallus now just don’t die
escape pod, good okay he’s almost there
come on come on come on rescue himmm
zeb save your friend HURRY UP
don’t die kallus don’t die don’t die d o n t d i e
ALMOST THERE
SHE GOT HIM
HE’S GONNA BE OKAY
KALLUS LIVES
I’M ACTUALLY CRYING AND SCREAMING SO HARD
I WAS SO SCARED HE WAS GOING TO DIE
AND NOW HE’S JOINED THE REBELLION PROPERLY
I’M SO HAPPY
oh boy pryce helplessly watching the rebel ships sail past her
she knows it’s not gonna turn out well for her
i hope we see more of her development
aahhh the ‘seeing’ aspect brought in again
did i... detect fear in thrawn’s voice?
okay good luck thrawn that’s definitely foreshadowing
did bendu straight up vanish? like just... poof?
okay between thrawn and bendu i don’t know who’s creepier
that silent pat of acknowledgement kanan gave zeb... you can tell he’s glad that he’s alive too
YES GET INVOLVED IN THE CIVIL WAR
please
the hesitation on kallus’s face breaks my heart. he doesn’t know if he’s going to be accepted in the rebellion
at least he knows he has kanan’s acceptance, alongside zeb’s
that genuine smile ohh my son
that contemplative shot of the silent rebels just tells you that they’re feeling the heavy losses, and it’s not easy
ezra sure does love that spot
love that final conversation between father and son
there’s still hope for the future of the rebellion
now that was an amazing episode, i can’t wait for season 4

Sabine may not be the warrior to unite Mandalore yet, but she will be
I will literally fight, her character development is pointing in this direction and it’s all I care about
We’ve only seen her past in fragments that she drops in moments of emotional upheaval; despite her natural exuberance and how expressive she is in her art, she plays things very close to the chest.  Even Kanan didn’t seem to know the whole story of her past, or at least the depths to which it affected her.
As far as I’ve seen, Rebels is a story about growth.  The rebellion is in its infancy, and we follow the Ghost crew as they and others make connections with other rebel cells or pirate starships or generally do the organizing that will eventually bring down the empire, but they aren’t there yet.  No one is.  Hope is still metamorphosing, on Tatooine, on Alderaan, on Chopper Base and in a million little hidey-holes throughout the galaxy.  Everyone is still growing.  No one is who they need to be to defeat the empire soundly.  Not yet.
Sabine is still growing as a person too.  She feels disconnected from her Mandalorian roots in some sense, though she uses the starbird as her tag and still wears the armor.  It’s a conscious choice to feel her own exile as strongly as possible, to exert some control over her circumstances, and to hold on to the last part of her family that can’t really abandon her, some shred of identity while she fled and built a new life for herself.  Her Mandalorian training provided a strong foundation for the rebel she would become.
Its likely that being forced to design a weapon, the details and circumstances of which are still unclear, made her feel some sort of disconnect with her personhood as well.  She chaffed against rigid imperial rule, she lived in an occupied society, and her labor was being used to support that occupation.  Imperial requirements of compliance and conformity being what they were, she might have felt even her personality was slipping away, buried in whatever the empire was forcing her to become.
What struck me about this episode was how Sabine was a deliberate splash of color against the cold landscape and the people who inhabited it.  Clan Wren seems to have a very muted aesthetic - the emblems are the same, but there’s hardly any color there.  Sabine’s mother is the exception, but the gold in her armor is an accent, and darker, dull.  Sabine’s armor is splattered with color, right down to her gloves, and all of it is bright and loud.
Sabine’s brother takes this to an extreme, though unwillingly.  Instead of wearing his house emblems, he wears the armor of imperial super commandos, enforcing the conformity encouraged by the empire.  His is the fate that Sabine would have faced had she remained with her family or continued to serve the empire.  Her colorful armor, her non-regulation hair, her quick wit and her compassion buried under mass-produced plates.
Sabine had to leave, not just her family but her cultural sphere, in order to survive both physically and emotionally.  She had to leave, and learn to grow somewhere else, had to heal somewhere else before she could return to her home and her people.
Mandalore is suffering; it has been since before the clone wars and will continue to do so without revolution.  Their warrior ethos is central to their culture, but it had killed their planet and nearly killed them.  But identity is powerful and important, and they weren’t able to let it go.  The political manuverings of outsiders and greed both within and without destroyed any hope of transformation or synthesis and the wounds remain raw.
If Mandalore is going to survive, it needs something new to grow from within.
Sabine, who hasn’t forgotten Mandalore’s traditions, who carries her culture as literal armor, whose art has revolutionary inspirations melded with historical symbols - she can be the necessary change.  Or she can inspire it.
Sabine’s mother has said several interesting things concerning the darksaber and how it is used to determine succession.  First she implied that Sabine couldn’t be its true master without having defeated Maul, and underlined again the danger of possessing it at all.  Then she simply tossed it to Gar Saxon like a common blaster and not the most powerful symbol in Mandalorian culture.
Ursa Wren is framed immediately as a political creature, so she could have any number of reasons for acting as she did.  Its likely that her conversation with Sabine was meant to scare her daughter off of a dangerous course.  Ursa is making an attempt to hold together the political power of a clan that is absolutely hemoraging influence.  Power is strength on Mandalore, and strength is safety, which seems to be in short supply for her family, with a daughter branded a traitor and on the run, a political hostage husband, and a military hostage son.
She may have even been mostly telling the truth, believing she was saving her daughter by giving up the Darksaber without providing Saxon any meaningful victory.  If the Darksaber really is meaningless without having defeated its previous holder in combat, then Saxon won’t be any more powerful that he already was - which, as a governor and military leader, was an already substantial amount.
But in Legacy of Mandalore, Sabine does defeat the weilder of the Darksaber - she stands over a defeated Saxon in a deliberate visual echo of Anakin standing over a defeated Count Dooku, two lightsabers held crossed beneath the enemy’s chin.  She didn’t kill Saxon though that would have been permitted or even expected in a struggle for the Darksaber (and subsequently gave me my most recent heart attack since the end of mag7), but it was clear that she absolutely crushed him.  With the Force Suite playing in the background through parts of the battle, I feel like there are some implications we can explore.
Sabine had, by the end of the episode, decided to stay with her family.  This will be a difficult transition for her, not only reliving old traumas but also doing so without the support of her found family among the ghost crew.  Hera and Kanan seemed much more concerned about her mental and emotional wellbeing than her biological family, who are clearly in survival mode themselves.  She believes her place is with her clan, doing what she can to find whoever is meant to unite Mandalore and free it from the empire.  She doesn’t believe that person is her.
As I said early on in this ramble, Rebels is a story about growth.  In the beginning of the series, Sabine wouldn’t have been able to unite anyone.  She was still hurting, though in a way that we the viewers could not always perceive.  But we did see her heal an old friendship, develop new ones, and secure powerful allies for the fledgling rebellion.  Now she’s functionally rescued her clan for the moment, soundly defeating the hand-picked imperial lapdog (though mom helped).  She has the respect again of her clan.  Her exile is at an end, though it has changed her.  She’s a warrior in her own right, not just a troublemaker on the run.  So what would it take for her to unite Mandalore?
She has to symbolically and publicly win the Darksaber.  Again.
She could do this by defeating Maul, though he’s probably one of the most dangerous people in the universe and going after him without the force is foolish and probably deadly.  But it would be poetic and I want to see someone put him in his place.  His dance with Obi Wan never seems to go anywhere, and it’s time for someone else to step in and End It.
She could also fight Thrawn.  There’s symmetry there - artist kills art critic - and Thrawn is a likely candidate for putting down rebellious Mandalorians before they can become A Problem.  But he would have to be visibly in charge and impacting the lives of Mandalorians in a meaningful way for it to make any sense.
What I think is likely to happen is that Sabine will start stepping up and organizing.  She’ll use what she learned about putting together a rebellion and whip the Clans into shape to get the empire out of Mandalorian space.  She’ll be so busy leading her own rebellion that she won’t notice that she’s . . . actually the leader.  She’ll grow into the role.  She’ll make mistakes, but she’ll get there.  And the empire, stuck fighting two rebellions united by legendary legacy swords, will be too distracted to put out all the fires.
Sabine is going to wield the Darksaber by right, not default

Voiceless
So I finally wrote the fic for my Mute Kallus AU! It is the first part in what I hope is several parts. I already have a few other ideas that I’ll be working on over time if people enjoy this one! Anyways hope you enjoy it!
Read it on AO3
@heartbreakerninja
Kallus couldn’t shake the feeling that something was very, very wrong. Grand Admiral Thrawn summoned both Kallus and Lyste for a meeting, saying it was urgent. Had something happened? Had the Rebels attacked an Imperial station? He hoped not, that would have been incredibly stupid of them. A dark part of his mind wondered if Thrawn had discovered he was Fulcrum but pushed the thought out of his mind, if Thrawn knew he was Fulcrum he would have arrest him….right? Kallus calmly walked into Thrawns office, surprised to find he was not studying art as he usually did.
“Agent Kallus,” Thrawn calmly greeted. “I’d imagine you’re wondering why I summoned you here today.”
“Yes,” Kallus admitted. “Do you have information on Rebel activity?”
“No, I have found something even better,” Thrawn said.
“Something better than the rebels?” Lyste asked.
“Yes, I have discovered the identity of the Agent known as Fulcrum,” Thrawn calmly said, startling both Lyste and Kallus. “But you already knew who he was Agent Kallus, didn’t you?”
 “I don’t know what you’re-“
“You are a traitor to the Empire Fulcrum.” On instinct, Kallus turned to run out of the room, but found his way blocked by two Stormtroopers who grabbed him and shoved him down onto one of the chairs
“So…are you going to kill me?” Kallus spat.
“Oh no,” Thrawn calmly said as a medical droid entered. “No, that would make you a martyr and we cannot have that. No, I have something much better planned for you. Something that will send a clear message to any who would think to speak out against the Empire.” Kallus’s eyes widened in horror as his head was roughly pulled back and the medical droid starting pulling out tools.
“W-what are you d-doing?” Kallus gasped, heart hammering in his chest.
“Silencing you,” Thrawn said as Lyste watched in horror as the droid proceeded. “Permanently.”
 ------
Lyste couldn’t tear his eyes off of Kallus’s unconscious form as he was dragged out of the room, having passed out part way through the….procedure. Lyste shuddered as he thought of Kallus’s screams of agony that where brutally cut off, leaving the former agent only able to whimper in pain, tears streaming down his face.
“Is there a problem?” Thrawn cooly asked, startling him.
“….was it necessary to not sedate him at all?” Lyste nervously asked.
“Yes,” Thrawn said, “This was his punishment for his crimes against the Empire. He is a warning against those who would think to betray their Emperor.”
“I see,” Lyste uncertainly said, doubts filtering through his mind. Treason was a serious crime, but this…this was inhuman…They had to be harsh on traitors though, right?
 “You are dismissed.” Thrawn said.
“Yes sir,” Lyste said, fleeing Thrawns office, his mind swirling with dangerous thoughts. His mind still couldn’t fully process that Kallus was the traitor. Yes he did have access to highly classified information but he was loyal to the Empire above anything else. The more Lyste thought about it however, the more he realized as of late Kallus had been acting….differently. More willing to give up the chase, less likely to jump on anything that hinted at Rebel activity, more willing to speak up to injustices the Empire committed.
So…maybe he was the traitor, and if he was a traitor he deserved this punishment…. Lystre tried to convince himself of this, but it didn’t sit well with him. No one deserved to go through such torture. And even if someone did…someone as loyal as Kallus defecting seemed wrong. They knew they did questionable things at times to keep peace, but the Rebels where terrorists, they had to do these things to keep peace. But if Kallus had defected despite that…he must have found something absolutely vile the Empire was doing….but what? What could be so terrible that would convince him to leave? He needed answers, now.
Determined, Lyste found a datapad and made his way to Kallus’s cell, the guards letting him in without any question thankfully. Thankfully, Kallus was awake, curling up in the corner of his cell, eyes glossy, body hunch, like he was trying to protect himself from further harm.
“Why did you do it?” Lyste asked, Kallus not even having the decency to look at him. “Answer me.” Kallus gingerly tubbed his bandage covered throat, a look of pain crossing his features. “With this.” He added, holding out the datapad for Kallus to take. “Go on, explain yourself!” Kallus however wouldn’t take it, continuing to state at the wall, rubbing his neck, his body trembling.
“Maybe you did deserve this you traitor!” Lyste spat, freezing when Kallus weakly nodded his head, curling in on himself. Lyste had expected Kallus to try and defend himself or at least villainize the Empire for what they did to Kallus. But this…this was unexpected and a little unnerving. “So you agree you deserved this for betraying the Empire-“ Kallus shook his head, his gaze distant. “What do you mean no? You are a traitor to the Empire!” Kallus tiredly looked at him for a moment before looking away, expression defeated. “Fine, rot in here for all I care!” Lyste snapped, turning and leaving the cell without a second glance back.
Kallus deserved this, he did this to himself, he probably just wanted power or something. Lyste told himself this over and over again like a mantra, but no matter how many times he told himself this, he couldn’t convince himself.
 ----
Of course Lyste wouldn’t understand, couldn’t understand. He didn’t know the horrors the Empire had committed, that he’d committed in the name of the Empire. He couldn’t see that Kallus deserved this not for treason, but for not committing treason sooner. He’d let so many innocents suffer and die in the name of justice, he deserved punishment for that. Of course, the rebels might not think that this was enough, they probably would make him pay with his life. A part of him hoped they would, he didn’t deserve to live, not after all he’d done.
Kallus shivered weakly, curing up in a tighter ball in an attempt to warm himself but to no avail. Why did they have to take the meteor? It was warm and it couldn’t do anything useful in this cell. He wished Thrawn had just killed him, but no that would have been too merciful of him. No, Thrawn wanted him to suffer a long and miserable life so he could slowly suffer for his crimes. All he could hope was that the Rebels wouldn’t attempt to break him out and leave him to rot. It was what he deserved.
 ----
Something was wrong, it had been weeks since Kallus had sent them any messages and it was starting to worry Zeb. Even if he didn’t have any information, he would have usually at least sent them a quick message to assure them everything was alright. He’d never been silent for so long before…
“I don’t get why you’re so worried about him,” Ezra said as he watched Zeb pace. “He’s done a lot of terrible things to all of us, especially you.”
“He’s trying to be better now,” Zeb firmly said. “That’s what’s important, not what he’s done in the past.”
“Seems important to me…” Ezra grumbled.
“Zeb’s right,” Kanan said. “Besides he does give valuable intel for us.”
 “Well….yea I guess…” Ezra reluctantly agreed.
“And he’s risked his life several times not to help us,” Zeb added.
“Besides, I do recall you weren’t exactly a model citizen when you first joined the crew,” Hera added with a smirk.
“But I was stealing from the Empire!” Ezra cried.
“You stole from us,” Zeb corrected.
“Okay but that’s not trying to kill you.”
“Yea but some of our own slaughtered his unarmed and injured men,” Zeb said. “He had his reasons to not trust as but now he realizes not all Rebels are like that.”
“What do you mean?” Hera asked. Zeb cringed, wishing he hadn’t said anything; this was not his story to tell. Thankfully, a messenger saved Zeb from having to respond.
“Captain, we received a transmission from an Imperial.” The messenger uncertainly said. “He insisted we let him speak with your crew.”
 “Who?” Hera asked.
 “Lieutenant Lyste.”
“Why would he want to talk to us?” Ezra hissed.
 “Seems suspicious,” Kanan agreed.
“Put him through, but make sure he can’t see us.” Hera ordered.
“Yes Captain,” He said, doing as she asked him. Soon Lyste’s holograph appeared and Hera asked,
 “What do you want?”
“I’m only sending you this message as a courtesy,” Lyste said. “Kallus was revealed to be Fulcrum and has been captured.”
“What?” Zeb cried. “How could this happen?”
“Why are you telling us this?” Hera suspiciously asked. “How do we know this isn’t a trap?”
“I am no fan of your rebellion but….what Thrawn did to Kallus was….vile and wrong-“
“Done to Kallus?” Zeb asked, “What did he do to him?”
“I’m sorry I have to go, good luck,” Lyste said before ending the transmission.
“I don’t know about you but this doesn’t sit right with me,” Hera said.
 “Me neither,” Ezra said.
“I think he’s telling the truth,” Zeb said, “We haven’t heard from Kallus in way too long.” Chopper eagerly beeped and Hera said,
“Sounds like Chopper agrees with you.”
“His vote doesn’t count!” Ezra cried.
“Why not?” Hera asked. “He is a member of the crew.”
“What do you two think?” Zeb asked.
“…I don’t trust Kallus but….I do trust your opinion so I think we should go.”
“I agree,” Kanan said. “If we leave Kallus after all he’s done to help us, we’re no better than the Empire.”
“I guess we’re going on a rescue mission,” Hera said, smiling at Zeb.
 ----
Kallus had long since lost track of how long he’d been in his cell. His cell didn’t get any sunlight and food was sporadic at best. Not that Kallus really ate much when anything was brought. Swallowing anything was agonizing, his throat throbbed at even the thought of trying to swallow anything. He knew he needed to eat, but that didn’t make it any easier for him.
Maybe he could just stop eating and waste away to nothingness….Kallus almost immediately shoved the thought out of his mind, the Empire would just find a way to force feed him the nutrients he needed to survive. He had to live as an example after all. An example of what though? Absolute hatred by every living creature in the universe? The Empire saw him as a traitor, and the Rebels saw him as nothing but Imperial trash. Even if they didn’t, it there was no way they could rescue him…
Kallus tiredly looked up at the door at the sound of muffled shouting, what was going on? He heard the familiar sound of blaster fire with even more shouting. Where the rebels here? Why would they come here? Surely not for him….distantly he heard the familiar sound of a bo-rifle firing and realized Zeb was here. If Zeb was here…that meant the Rebels had come, for him of all people. A small grin rose on his face at the thought, someone cared enough to rescue him, the smile quickly fell off of his face though when he realized they probably only came to get intel that he did not have and could no longer give even if he had any. He was completely useless to everyone now. What would they do to him when they realized what the Empire did to him?
The door to his cell opened, Kallus tensed half expecting it to be Stormtroopers, relaxing when it was in fact Zeb standing there.
“He’s in here guys!” Zeb called out, relief spreading across his features. “Are you alright.”
Kallus nodded his head, a small smile on his face despite everything. It was odd, knowing that there was actually someone in the Galaxy who cared about his wellbeing and was actually happy to see he was alive. He wasn’t sure he could exactly call themselves friends, but maybe someday he could. If they both survived. His smile quickly fell when he realized Zeb probably didn’t actually care about him, just the information he thought Kallus had.
“Kal, is everything okay?” Zeb asked.
“Now is not the time for small talk Zeb!” The young Jedi, Ezra, exclaimed. “We need to move!”
“Can you walk?” Zeb asked. Kallus nodded, shakily getting to his feet making Zeb frown. Wordlessly, he reached out to help Kallus out of the cell.
“What? No thank you?” Ezra grumbled, rolling his eyes. Kallus instinctively rubbed his throat over the bandages, wincing. How was he going to let them know he couldn’t talk anymore? Zeb stared at Kallus’s face, his eyes trailing down to the bandage wrapped around his throat, eyes widening in horror.
 “I…I don’t think he can….” Zeb breathed.
“What does that mean?” Ezra snapped.
“We can talk about this later!” Kanan exclaimed, “We have company!” Kanan’s words spurred the group into action, Zeb carefully leading Kallus down the halls towards where Kallus assumed they were keeping their ship with Kanan and Ezra at the rear, thankfully meeting very little resistance as they raced back to the ship.
“Sabine’s diversion must be working,” Ezra commented.
“Maybe a little too well,” Kanan nervously said.
“She’ll be fine,” Ezra assured as the ship came into view, the Mandalorian girl Sabine running towards them.
“Let’s move it!” Sabine cried, the group running onto the ramp.
“Spector two this is Spector one, we’re all aboard!” Kanan said into his comm link.
“Come on, let’s get you to the medbay,” Zeb softly said, Kallus tiredly nodding in agreement as the Ghost flew to safety. He was safe.
 -----
“Zeb was right,” Hera sighed as she stepped out of the medbay, “Kallus can’t speak.”
 “How? What happened?” Ezra asked.
“According to the meddroid, his vocal cords where removed,” Hera said, jaw clenched.
 “That’s horrible,” Ezra cried.
“It’s going to be hard adjusting to this,” Hera agreed, eyes flashing, “We gave him a datapad with a translator for him to use to talk until we find a better way for him to communicate but he’s not talking much.”
“In which sense,” Kanan asked with a smirk.
“You know what I mean,” Hera sighed. “All he’d say is he didn’t know anything of use to us.”
“Maybe I should try talking to him,” Zeb offered, “I’m sort of a friend so maybe he’ll open up to me?”
“I think we should give him a little space, he’ll talk when he’s ready.” Hera said.
“I’m not so sure….” Zeb mumbled.
“He’s been through a lot, just give him some time,” Hera firmly said. “In the meantime we’ll hunt down the bastards that did this to him.”
“Alright…” Zeb reluctantly agreed, praying to Ashla Hera was right.
 -----
A week later, Kallus was released from the med bay and was given his own room on base. Though Commander Sato and others urged Kallus to share any information he had, Kallus remained silent. Despite his continued silence, Commander Sato found some useful information for Kallus to learn sign language so he could communicate more easily with everyone on base, but according to him, Kallus hadn’t touched anything given to him.
Enough was enough, something was wrong and Zeb was going to get to the bottom of it. Ignoring Hera’s plea’s to give him a little more time, Zeb made his way to Kallus’s room, knocking on the door before stepping inside. Kallus glanced up at Zeb, looking surprised for a moment before grabbing his datapad and typing out, a robotic voice speaking as he typed the words,
“Hello Zeb I am surprised to see you.” Sitting up from his position on the bed.
“Sorry I didn’t come sooner,” Zeb said, walking over to the bed. “Can I join you?” Kallus eagerly nodded, scooting over to make room for him. “Thanks.” Zeb said, sitting down.
“Don’t be sorry I know you’re busy,” Kallus quickly typed out.
“Not really, Hera said I should give you some space but I heard you haven’t really been talking to anyone and….I wanted to make sure you where okay.” Zeb admitted, nervously rubbing the back of his neck. Kallus froze, his face falling.
Kallus started to type something several times before quickly erasing it before the translator could start to translate it before eventually typing, “I know your friends don’t believe me but I swear I have no useful information. The only thing I know for sure is Imperial protocol but your friend Sabine already knows most if not all of that.”
“I believe you,” Zeb assured. “But I more meant just….talking or even practicing that sign language stuff.”
“Oh.” Kallus said, pausing to think of what to say before typing, “No one on this base knows it, so what’s the point of learning?”
“How do you know no one knows?” Zeb curiously asked.
“It took a week for Sato to find what he did, don’t you think he would have just sent someone who knew it already if there was someone on base who could?” Kallus typed out, sighing heavily, rubbing his throat.
 “I…I honestly didn’t think about that….”
“I don’t think anyone did,” Kallus typed.
“Well that’s not right,” Zeb said.
“Hardly anything is.” Kallus typed. “Besides, no one here really wants to talk to me anyways.”
 “I do,” Zeb firmly said.
“You do?” Kallus typed, surprise etched across his features.
“I do, we are friends right?” Zeb asked.
“I yes I suppose so,” Kallus typed, a small smile on his face.
“So I’ll learn with you,” Zeb said. “Might make it easier that way since we both can practice with each other.” Kallus beamed and Zeb and typed,
“Thank you Zeb.” Before pulling up one of the files Commander Sato sent him.
