[Movie Review] Excuse me, exactly what secret is in ‘The Secrets of Dumbledore’?
[Movie Review] Excuse me, exactly what secret is in ‘The Secrets of Dumbledore’?
What secrets does Dumbledore (Jude Law) have in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore? (Image credit: Warner Bros Pictures) “There is no post-credits scene,” the cinema usher gently broke the news to me while I was sitting through the credits of The Secrets of Dumbledore waiting for the titular secrets of Dumbledore to be revealed. Dumbfounded, I left. Hold up. Were there any secrets in the…

Queer Movie Review #29: The World To Come
Tumblr media
I found this film through my recent obsession with Vanessa Kirby (who plays Tallie.) Anyone else unable to look away from her arms-dealing temptress in the Mission Impossible movies? Anyone? Bueller? *cough* Anyway. I immediately googled whether she was in any queer films, and here we are.
Tumblr media
The World To Come tells the story of Abigial (Katherine Waterson), a homestead farmer in rural New York in the mid-1900s. Abigail and her husband, Finney, (Christopher Abbott), have recently lost their only daughter to illness. Each of Abigail's days pass into the next, with only her grief and their farm's bookkeeping to mark her time. That is, until Tallie and her husband, Dyer (Casey Affleck), move down the road. Now Abigail and Tallie pursue the one relationship that brings them joy, while hiding it from their husband's.
Tumblr media
This movie is your run-of-the-mill (heh) queer period drama. Times are hard, especially for queer folks. Without giving much away, I will warn that The World To Come does not have a happy ending.
Tumblr media
What sets this movie apart, however, is the acting. There is something electric with Abigail and Tallie's chemistry. The World To Come also holds the honor of the best on-screen queer kiss I've ever seen. The way Abigail kisses Tallie, then pulls back, stares in hesitation, and then dives in for another? Perfection. I'd recommend watching it just for that reason.
Tumblr media
In general, however, I'd recommend this film if you are already in a decent mood and willing to have your heart broken. Go watch a queer comedy like Booksmart if you're feeling down.

Hey gio I accidentally got into an argument about how Rowling, and how she’s not transphobic and how’s she’s misunderstood, do you have a list of reliable sources and evidence to point out she’s not a good person?
okay i want to say that. unfortunately i DID have some discussions similar to this in the past, and they always ended with the other person going "let's agree to disagree :)" and so i know it's a lowkey Lost Cause. however. wanna give out obvious proof? like nothing that can be misread or misunderstood?? like of course i can just throw her twitter link here and call it a day, but again. i've met people who were adamant and kept saying that she was just pro women, well.
sure let's go. putting it under read more because i know that it's very upsetting. we're discussing transphobia, but i also want to lampshade her racism and much more so. yeah.
also point 0.5: i know you want proof of transphobia but i want to remind everyone that she's a bad person through and through. just by reading the book you can see a lot of fatphobia - especially with the dursleys - excusing slavery with the house elves to the point that the only one who's happy with being free is considered "weird" and the one person who wants to fight for their rights being constantly used a a joke, antisemitism with the goblins description, the racism when it comes to non-white characters (the chinese character is literally called cho chang and whatever the fuck she did with the native americans) and much, much more. I won't lie, I still have fond memories of the books from when I read them as a child, but you can't ignore that she really pissed outside the bucket more than once
1. again, just read the books. in harry potter i think it's just something very vaguely hinted with Rita Skeeter being described as masculine and being a character who constantly badmouths and stalks the underage protagonists, and we all know how her main villain in "troubled blood" is what a trans woman is in the eyes of a terf: just a man who crossdresses to enter in women's bathrooms to kill them. there's also her new book where she makes the victim we need to avenge a cartoonist who's killed for being accused of being transphobic, but honestly i didn't read too much into it nor i want to because just the premise makes my blood boil
2. small, but while her rampage on twitter can "be misunderstood" as "her protecting women" ( no it can't, but again. that's what people i discussed with were preaching :^) ), i think the ultimate smoking gun was her blocking stephen king, someone she openly reverred jus a few hours before he stated that trans women are women
Tumblr media
3. similarly, Katherine Waterson, the actress who played the main love interest in "Fantastic Beasts", was casually pushed aside after she was very openly went against J.K.'s transphobia. In the latest movie her character was "unavailable" until th very end, as far as I know, where they rushed to close her love arc.
3.5. the actors of Harry, Ron and Hermione and many others were also openly supporting trans people btw, and since she doesn't really have power over them anymore Rowling being absent to the Harry Potter reunion really says a lot to me
4. This is my personal smoking gun: her promoting a terf site
Tumblr media
i think the name of the site itself is proof enough, but just to make sure that they didn't have a sudden change of heart or it could "be misunderstood" i took one for the team and checked their site and
Tumblr media
this was their landing page besties. can't be more obvious than this
5. JK yes you can. Wanna know with who she hangs with lately?
youtube
these people :) I heavily encourage watching this video, as upsetting as it might be -- and check out this channel's Harry Potter essay too, they really go deep into how badly she fucked up, but the TL;DR version of the video above is "they're all terfs" like you can say you're not transphobic as much as you want, but if most of your besties are transphobes I think it's kind of obvious you are too
6. "Merry Terfmas"

Judging from the fb movies, the new hp series is gonna be trash. The old movies had jk as just a consultant and they worked fine, but when given full control over the writing and directing, the fb movies were full of a lot of questionable and bad decisions, such as having Queenie join the bad guys or making Voldemort’s snake into a human woman. After the lovely Katherine Waterson dared to criticize the transphobic comments of jk, she ended up with a glorified cameo in the third film, which is especially ridiculous considering she played the main character’s love interest and had larger roles in the first 2 films. That’s setting up a pretty toxic environment for child actors to work in because it’s unlikely these kids are going to agree with her as they get older and start to form their own opinions. In addition, there’s the stupid idea that the original child actors somehow owe jk. If anything, she owes them. If the movies weren’t as successful as they were, there’d be no theme park money, no video game money, and not as many kids reading the books today.
This is one reason why I worry about the kid actors in this reboot. Next to the fact that they'll have to deal with getting hate from various people who don't ever seem to learn to stop going after kid actors in movies or shows or from butthurt Harry Potter stans (I get being mad your favorite movie's are being rebooted, but dear god leave the kids out of it), they also have terf queen's easily hurt ego to deal with.
I am being serious when I say this: it wouldn't surprise me if it's in their contracts they cannot comment on JK Rowling or her tweets unless they wanna risk their careers, given how Hollywood can treat adult actors if the adult's do something the people heading the film/show don't like, let alone kid actors. Like generally wouldn't be surprising if JK demands a recast mid-show cause one of the golden trio actors disagreed with JK.
And don't get me started on that, "They owe JK their careers, they should be quiet out of respect to her!" bullshit. They owe her NOTHING as they would have been fine without the Harry Potter films. If anything, its like you said, she owes them.

Sony’s Screen Gems has moved up the domestic release for its rom-com Love Again, starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Sam Heughan and Celine Dion as herself, from May 12th to May 5th.
The film evacuates a highly crowded weekend that will see the opening of the Penélope Cruz drama L’immensità, IFC Films’ buzzy Berlin title BlackBerry, Robert Rodriguez’s Ben Affleck starrer Hypnotic, Focus Features’ Book Club: The Next Chapter, Viva Pictures’ animated pic Rally Road Racers, Sony’s manga adaptation Knights of the Zodiac, Sony Pictures Classics’ Yogi Berra doc It Ain’t Over and IFC Films’ Trace Lysette-led drama Monica.
Competitors on its new weekend include Lionsgate’s action-thriller One Ranger with Thomas Jane and John Malkovich, Disney/Marvel’s franchise ender Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Kino Lorber’s drama Chile ’76.
Written and directed by Jim Strouse — the filmmaker behind titles including The Incredible Jessica James, People Places Things, The Winning Season and Grace Is Gone — Love Again asks the question, what if a random text message led to the love of your life? Pic follows Mira Ray (Jonas), who while dealing with the loss of her fiancé, sends a series of romantic texts to his old cell phone number…not realizing the number was reassigned to Rob Burns’ (Heughan) new work phone. A journalist, Rob is captivated by the honesty in the beautifully confessional texts. When he’s assigned to write a profile of megastar Celine Dion, he enlists her help in figuring out how to meet Mira in person… and win her heart.
The film, featuring multiple new songs from Dion, is produced by Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee and Esther Hornstein. Exec producers are Doug Belgrad, Sophie Cassidy, Louise Killin, Jonathan Fuhrman and Dion.
Screen Gems will on Friday release its supernatural horror The Pope’s Exorcist, starring Russell Crowe. Other upcoming titles from the studio include the Bert Kreischer vehicle The Machine (May 26), Insidious: The Red Door (July 7) and the horror pic They Listen (August 25) with Katherine Waterson and John Cho.

The End We Start From: Review
The mother of all flood films
Tumblr media
Having your first child is supposed to be a joyous moment for a mother (well, apart from the late nights and constant wailing). But in The End We Start From, the joys of motherhood are overshadowed by a nightmarish fight for survival. From first-time director Mahalia Mehlo, this artfully explores the very real fear of a mother who gets unlucky enough to give birth at the start of an apocalypse.
Based on the novel by Megan Hunter, the story deftly explores the heights of motherhood through a prism of dread and uncertainty. Set in London, we follow a woman known only as Mother (Jodie Comer), on the brink of giving birth with her partner R (Joel Fry). However, as the camera lingers dangerously on blinkering TVs and leaking doormats, you get the sense that something isn't quite right. Sure enough, in one dazzling cross-cutting sequence, we watch as Mother's home is submerged in murky water, while she gives birth to newborn son Zeb (one of the cutest babies in recent cinema).
We soon learn that London is buried in a devastating flood, plunging England into a fight for resources by the countryside. This dystopian situation isn't that unthinkable, but Alice Birch's adaptation takes a controlled approach that ensures this world feels as natural and grounded as possible, making every sudden wave hit you like a ton of bricks. You are reminded constantly that danger and uncertainty lurk around the corner, from the sudden shock of tragic family losses to a nervy stay at a shelter that only allows one child and one parent per family - alarming news for R. Whenever Mother is suddenly set adrift on her own, you'll bite your nails off worrying about her safety.
Thankfully, there are some moments of levity amid the darkness. Katherine Waterson brings some much-needed humour as a resourceful fellow parent, while Benedict Cumberbatch has a short-but-memorable cameo as a kind stranger who reminds Mother of the life she left behind. Comer and Fry could've used a few more scenes together to sell their relationship, but their poignant separation is still the beating heart of the film.
Of course, the film would be nothing without Comer, who carries the film (and a small child) on her capable shoulders. It's hard to think of a more skilled actress to lead this sort of film right now. We spend most of our time in her company, and whether she's teasing her newborn, making risky survival decisions, or generally struggling to keep it together, Comer is nothing if not watchable, investing you further in her plight. The resulting film is so effective that you might leave with a phobia of leaky roofs.
With impressively restrained work from Mehlo and Comer, The End We Start From is a bittersweet and often terrifying story about motherhood and human resilience.

A playlist for the equivalent of the sequence where Francis thinks Richard and Sibylla have drowned (through to the revelations at Calais if you want) please.
My god you're evil Katherine <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nothing but the Cathartic
A band AU playlist for a six hour hungover drive through the night to confirm whether the relatives you keep trying to estrange yourself from, who you actually love beyond words, have drowned*
1) Kate Bush - Watching You Without Me 2) Joan Baez - House Carpenter 3) Jean-Roger Caussimon - La Manche 4) The Watersons - Idumea 5) John Lennon - Mother 6) Lady Maisery - The Changeling's Lullaby 7) Sily Sisters - Burning of Auchindoon 8) Anne Briggs - Lowlands 9) Justin Hayward & John Lodge - My Brother 10) Maddy Prior & Tim Hart - I Live Not Where I Love 11) Joni Mitchell [Morgan James, because Spotify] - The Last Time I Saw Richard 12) Pentangle - Lyke-Wake Dirge 13) Nic Jones - Isle of France 14) Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem - Crossing the Bar 15) Charles Trenet - La Mer
'Then all the more credit to you,' said Erskine, seating himself, 'for entertaining such strong family feelings. We heard of your ride. I trust you are now quite rested after it.' The young man's mouth opened. 'The ride!' He sat down. 'My dear sir, the ride was nothing but the cathartic. It was the banquet at the Hôtel de Ville that did for me.'
*n.b. for a real hungover night drive you should a) let Archie drive and b) choose louder songs to keep you awake
I know I should be posting the celebrating-Thatcher’s-demise playlist today, but that one isn’t ready, so you get a miserable mourning one instead whoops
1) This is from The Ninth Wave, the B-side of Hounds of Love about a woman lost at sea. It's her pov on her relatives waiting for her to return - so the reverse of Francis imagining Sibylla and Richard are dead, but Sibylla wants to see what he's like imaging Richard's dead, and in terms of the misunderstandings and not-hearing-each-others it seems fitting for the fmaily at this point. 2) A folk song about a woman who had an affair with some devil (also known as The Demon Lover), is later persuaded by him to leave her husband and child and then drowns at sea when he deliberately sinks their ship. Not that I think any of this applies to Sibylla, but atmospherically I think Francis, who is not currently certain of his past, would find it fittingly painful. 3) Don't @ me I couldn't find a transcript of the lyrics and my French isn't good enough to know that it fits exactly, but it sounds good for the kind of crooner FRC was, for the soundtrack to Sibylla's past in France, and obviously La Manche is the French name for the English Channel. 4) A sacred harp song re-introduced to the UK by the Watersons, it's just a great mourning song. 5) If the lyrics to this seem unfair to Francis, Sibylla and FRC, or even overly kind on Gavin, then just think about how much misunderstanding there is between everyone, how much distrust there is and how much isn't being said that needs to be said at this point of the story. 6) Ok, this is one modern folk song I allowed myself because I thought it fitted Francis' fears of what he is to Sibylla so well. Plus imagine the way this could be interpreted from Sibylla's pov, knowing who the words are actually referring to: 'Your father says you're not his own nor any child of man's, / But I think you have your father's smile, your father's gentle hands, / And I pray that you will love me like your father used to do, / So hush awhile, my darling, so I might know it's you.' 7) It's really more of a GoK song, but that's emblemetic enough of the tangled Crawford relationships anyway: 'As I came in by Fiddich side on a May morning / Auchindoon was in a blaze an hour before the dawning / Crawing, crawing, for all your crowse crawing / You've burnt your crops and tint your wings / An hour before the dawning.' 8) Drowned lover appears to woman in a dream. Another great angsty ballad. 9) Perhaps on the surface more of a 'Richard about Francis' song, but given the reference to the hand at the bridle when Francis suddenly realises his brother's not dead, it might also be a bit about Francis' idea of Richard when he was young. Plus 'So far / aross a wild and windy sea / So far / That our voices are / Divided by an ocean / An ocean.' 10) Again, technically written as a song for a lover, but I think it still fits Francis' feelings about home and family and his difficult relationship with Scotland and Midculter. 11) Bit on the nose? Mm. 'Richard got married to a figure skater And he bought her a dishwasher and a coffee percolator And he drinks at home now most nights with the TV on And all the house lights left up bright. I'm gonna blow this damn candle out I don't want nobody comin' over to my table I got nothing to talk to anybody about All good dreamers pass this way someday Hidin' behind bottles in dark cafés Dark cafés, only a dark cocoon Before I get my gorgeous wings and fly away Only a phase, these dark café days.' 12) It's another banging mourning song from the canon of twentieth century folk revival! 13) The story is of a convict washing up from a shipwreck and being pardoned - you'd imagine Francis would see himself in it to an extent, while also thinking he deserves neither life nor pardon. 14) Another slight anachronism, because Katherine mentioned another recent version (by False Lights), and this is the arrangement that inspired that one. The song, however, is a Tennyson poem, and it had been set to choral music before, so it would sort of be known to Francis. 15) Again, big French crooner from Sibylla's glamour days, imagine her recuperating with this playing in the background as Francis steps into the room to see she's alive, while thinking Richard isn't...

Movie Review: Steve Jobs
Title: Steve Jobs Release Year: 2015 Director: Danny Boyle Genre: Biographical drama Main Cast: Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), Seth Rogan (Wozniak), Kate Winslet (Joanna), Michael Stuhlbarg (Andy Hertzfeld), Jeff Daniels (Scully), Katherine Waterson (Chrisanne) Plot: Set during three launches in Steve Jobs life, the Macintosh, the Cube, and the iMac, it examines the relationships he had with his daughter Lisa, Lisa’s mother, his current then former then current business partner Woz, his father figure Scully, and close friend/coworker Joanna. Through conversations and flashbacks, we see Jobs’s professional and personal trials as well as both the best and worst aspects of his character. Personal Rating: 18.2/20    (91%)
Tumblr media
Review: I thought this movie was phenomenal. I never knew much about Steve Jobs, probably because I didn’t want to reflect on how completely technologically incapable I am, but this movie was just so well done. I wouldn’t even categorize it as a biography, more a memoir as it only takes from five specific events in Jobs’ life. That keeps the film on track, all runtime influential and accounted for. You really get to know these interpersonal relationships because they are the plot. They are the movie. It lives and dies with them. That’s why it was so good that all the actors were amazing. Fassbender somehow kept us liking Jobs the whole way through, even during his more questionable moments, and perfectly portrayed the business genius mixed with the caring, but questionable, father. We somehow both felt sorry for and disliked Chrisanne for her struggles and treatment of Steve and Lisa. You couldn’t help but feel sorry for Woz for how he was treated, and you kind of just want to make sure Andy knows how good he was. It was a good and interesting watch that was completely entertaining through it’s two-hour run. Recommended for People who Like Movies About: genius’, real-life, people, relationships (platonic/familial), people driven stories
