Reacting to Contemporary Comics (Without Context) 8/?
Tumblr media
Had to reread my reactions to issue 4 to refresh my memory of where we left off and holy shit y'all here we go!
Spoilers for Asgardians of the Galaxy 4, 5, and possibly any comics I've mentioned before
Listen, I know that he wants to cause mayhem at some point, but the fact that even this version of Loki went to Thor when he found out Nebula was going to Earth, that he tries to negotiate with her when he finds that she's already gotten to Thor, makes me so fuckin' feral.
Neb, c'mon, a villain monologue? You're better than that. Don't show Loki your entire hand; he'll use it against you in 2 pages, even as a child illusion. Hell, blindfold him and tie both hands behind his back, and he'll still outwit you. At least to get himself and Thor out of there.
Okay Angela's acknowledging kinship with Loki, cool
I started this comic feeling things about the Loki-Thor siblings vibes, but I didn't expect to get Angela-Thor siblings vibes.
I have no idea what is happening. Not a fucking clue.
Oookay. So in the context of real Loki's timeline, this is after Thor has found out AoA Loki killed Kid Loki and took his place. He's still pissed with him. I think this is before or concurrent with ego death.
Angela's GAY?! Is every Asgardian queer except Odin and Thor?? (I have my personal opinions on Thor that I'll keep to myself, but canonically speaking)

Ok let's do the reverse: what are your *favorite* Loki runs? The ones that make you go "this writer Gets It"?
I constantly fawn over Blood Brothers, which can be found as "Loki (2004)" on the website on my pinned post. I'll be honest and say I am WAY more likely to woobify this bastard old man than MCU!Loki (and I love to make MCU!Loki cry). BB!Loki, he's so tragic! He's my babygirl!
I think my favorite Loki outside of that run is when he's written by Kieron Gillen, either as original adult, kid!Loki, or Ikol. Read Siege:Loki, Journey into Mystery, and Young Avengers featuring kid!Loki. And FUN FACT: Tom Hiddleston felt like Kieron Gillen "Got it" and informed his performance with those comic book runs. Even sent him a letter. Journey into Mystery was the ongoing series back when the first Thor movie came out.
I am quite fond of the old-timey Thor comic where Loki turns into a pigeon.
I like the whole "fighting against destiny" aspect from AoA. I admit I haven't kept up much with recent runs after that. I've read the Dan Watters run, some of Immortal Thor, War of the Realms I've only read some parts (Laufey eating Loki) because crossover events tire me. I have vague ideas of plot points because I see comic panels sometimes. And IDK I feel like Jason Aaron just throws random shit at you in his Thor comics, and it gets overwhelming and makes it hard to care.
I guess I like "Trials of Loki" too, though I'm a bit eh on some parts of it. It references mythology more than the usual myth (do you all want to see Loki's Wager angst? I FUCKING LOVE LOKI's WAGER ANGST!!). And there's the feeling of Loki being gaslighted by everyone, even the narrative.

In which I scream about Loki (2019) #1
Okay I’m just going to put my every reaction onto this post to save your dashboards from endless loki posting. SO
The front cover:
Why the fuck does he look so evil on the front cover. Tbh I know his face is just like that but also. We just had a redemption arc I can’t go through the whole again so soon
A rainbow in the background. Gay????
He’s just playing with Thor’s hammer which I LOVE because it’s so dumb and so loki to just. toss it around like it’s all a joke. Also, in War of the Realms Omega he says “Perhaps next time, I should borrow Mjolnir. I imagine I’ll be worthy enough any day now”. Tbh I don’t love the idea of Loki being worthy in an actual sense (I know he lifted the hammer in the axis event and that one time Odin just made him worthy to prove a point to Thor, but I think we can all agree those didn’t really count). Still, can’t wait to see where they go with that.
Also from War of the Realms: Omega, the shield he gives Drrf on the front cover!!!
The bridge is relatively familiar, like I know it’s one of the famous American ones (Brooklyn Bridge??) Anyway, hopefully this means some Midgard action and also there better be some fucking Verity Willis content or I’m gonna sue
BLACK FINGERNAILS. Still love it. In fact they kept the whole design and I’m absolutely nutting.
Also just a quick note on the variant cover because you know this bitch bought that shit: I know variant art isn’t always plot relevant, but would be fun if it is? I love that Loki’s grinning and the rest of the Asgardians are. Somewhat perturbed. I do prefer the regular art though, which tbh I usually do.
The contents:
I have very mixed feelings about the whole Loki being king of Jotunheim thing. Can’t really put my finger on it but honestly I’m just not that interested in Loki being that tied down. The fact that there’s a brb note on the throne is reassuring though. Also, is this meant to be angsty? Like I’m not confusing MCU Loki and 616 Loki but Loki has weird family feelings nonetheless, as seen by the super fun daddy vore scene. But anyway I’m not really feeling that vibe at the moment, and I think I’d like to.
Tumblr media
Please do not draw Loki’s face like that.
Otherwise I love this suit he’s got going on and also the new symbol on his little face helmet thing? Love it.
Also, presumably the new symbol is meant to be jera, a rune that largely means cycles and changes in fortune, so I guess maybe there’s something in it about all the redemption arcs we’ve had going on in the recent past (which I have mixed feelings about).
Every time Loki flirts with a girl he has to also flirt with a guy, or be a woman while he does it. Like I know he’s bi but like. Where. If you make him straight Kibblesmith I’ll break into your home and piss on your keyboard.
Tumblr media
Sigyn is mentioned!!! Is she going to be a character? I doubt it but I’m thrilled to just see her mentioned for the first time since. A long time. Anyway
Tumblr media
!!!!!!!!
Okay but, both Loki and Thor as kings, the casino scene, Loki’s weird Odin projection thing saying that Loki will end the world... this is literally AOA Axis in reverse and I’m DYING
Oh fuck Loki’s just super fucking smashed (now hungover) what a fucking icon.
Tumblr media
This is going to be my excuse for whenever I’m too fucking pissed
Is this the angst? The tasty fucking angst I was looking for?
I’m SCREAMING I love this of course Loki is a bad fucking king, it’s too much responsibility and he has to just. sit there. It’s boring. He’s not made to be a king and this I basically every confirmation I need. Incredible. Kibblesmith you’re ualid again.
This whole thing is fucking ridiculous, Thor’s just like “Please. I’m begging you. Please just take this seriously for once in your life.” And Loki’s like “I’m deadly serious” as he builds fucking Olaf from Frozen
Olaf has just vored someone.
Are we really doing another future Loki storyline? As much as I loved AOA I feel like its been done and I was really hoping to see something different? I don’t know, I really do enjoy Loki’s moral quandaries about ending the world and all that, but also what is the conclusion to this going to be other than that the future is not definite? Maybe I’m judging this too early but also, please do something different. I’m begging. (Not really).
So in the final page, are we meant to assume this is Loki, future Loki, and he’s worthy of Mjolnir? If so it could be an interesting twist on AOA. Still have my misgivings about being too involved in AOA. Still excited to see where it goes.
In the soon to be letter column: “Loki is a story about the kids who try to do everything right and still get punished for it”. Okay it’s cheesy but mentally ill kid me is crying.
Conclusion: I’m in love, I’m in love, not sold on the artwork entirely, but loving the story so far. I hope there’s more angst, I hope Kibblesmith does something quite different from AOA, and also please marvel GIVE US BACK VERITY WILLIS. Thank you.
And yes I will be writing in a letter about Verity. Because I’m that bitch.

So, am I the only one not thrilled about the possibility of a Loki series? I mean, sure it’s a great thing for Hiddles to be back as Loki and all that, but idk to me it feels a bit like second best. Like things at Disney went: ok we got all these big superheroes, let them play in their own big films, but yeah there’s this Loki guy people keep nagging us about, so let’s just make some half-arsed series so they’ll all be quiet.
I mean like. What possibilities for a plot do they even have? Unless it’s some kid!Loki or AOA or LadyLoki crap*, the ideas are a bit limited. Post IW? Oooh here we are back with the whole “did he or did he not die” routine, with the makers probably wasting just about as much time on an explanation as they did before (read: zero, aka ‘he just faked it [even though we’ve made that impossible by our own plot devices, but let’s just assume the audience won’t notice]’).
Pre-Thor? Interesting opportunities there, but enough to fill a series? I doubt it. And, let’s be honest, Loki without Thor is only half the fun, so they’d need a new Thor unless Chris Hemsworth gets down from his high horse and agrees to play in the series as well. I mean, I dare hope that the series will fill some of the gaps in the films, i.e. what happened in the void, what happened in Asgard after he took the throne, but that’s probably wishful thinking at best.
* Don’t get me wrong, these are certainly all valid and good and part of Loki’s character, but tbh I also very much want Loki to be Tom Hiddleston, and the way this is gonna go I’m kind of afraid that he will be in like 1 episode as an eyecatcher and then will canonically “shift” into another form, from whence on Tom won’t be in the series anymore and yeah...that’s not what I’m interested in, sorry.
And, also, idek, it feels a bit like....idk...after all the slander and “he’s too old to play Loki” and Taika’s and Russo bro’s other stupid comments and all the shite that has amassed since Ragnarök, I wouldn’t have done it if I were Tom. It just feels like a(nother) degradation of Loki’s character.
I will let myself be pleasantly surprised, but as of now I am not sharing everyone’s enthusiasm. Just an opinion, not meaning to spoil anyone’s fun.
Rant over, and out.

Do you read marvel comics, watch mcu movies and read/know the norse myth?
I don’t read the comics. I have looked at things (Kid!Loki, AOA) to get an understanding and an idea of what’s happening, but I never feel any strong desire to read them. My husband reads Young Avengers so I got second hand updates on what Loki was doing.
MCU movies - yes, I watch. I tend to prefer the origin films over sequels, but I’ve gotten a bit lax about watching the newer ones. I also wait until spoilers are fully posted before I go see anything.
Norse Myths - I have always loved the Mythology and Loki. I would have been a 800AD Viking rambling about how Loki gets a raw deal while everyone else side-eyes me and decides I shouldn’t go on raids anymore.

Finally watched the first episode of Loki and it was AMAZING. It’s just the first episode but about a third into it it was already getting into the meta questions of “does Loki’s story belong to Loki” and “Loki is supposed to be the villain of other heroes’ stories,” and Loki not having any of that because he refuses to fit into a box is quintessential Loki right there!!! This show GETS IT. Amazing, wonderful, fantastic; I want to go reread Agent of Asgard right this minute. Tom Hiddleston has an executive producer credit on this show and I can tell. (He gave the crew a multi-hour-long lecture on Loki continuity with a whiteboard and everything and I think that’s awesome.)
Literally my only gripe is the DB Cooper scene because aside from the whole scene just being absurd (to quote Loki), Loki says he did it “because he was young,” but it was in 1971! That’s 50 years ago.
Thor is canonically 1500 years old (might be an estimate imo, but those are his own words from Infinity War) and we know for a fact Loki is a smidge over 1000 from the Thor prologue and then Odin’s story of adopting him from the same movie. Fifty years ago for Loki is probably something like 3 weeks ago for a human being. Maybe even less!
However, he does follow it up by saying he only did it because he lost a bet to Thor, which makes a lot more sense, and it’s clearly a sequence that’s meant to be ridiculous anyway, so I’m going to just ignore the timeline issue. And given that that scene is in so many of the trailers I wonder if someone insisted on putting it in the show for trailer footage.
Random thoughts on the episode:
I’m pretty sure I called the villain of the piece in abstract speculation way before the show started, but I just want it on record that as I was watching the show, literally the first whiff we got of a villain, the scene of Mobius investigating and asking the kid who did it and the kid pointing to a picture of the devil that had very prominent horns, I immediately went, “the bad guy is an evil Loki isn’t it.” It only makes sense, because Loki’s greatest enemy has always been himself (from both a narrative perspective and from a “who has Loki gone up against in comics” perspective), but still. I’m kinda proud of myself for that immediate reaction.
In fairness, it should also go on record that the Mephisto theory memeing from WandaVision clearly got to me, because my second thought was “or it’s Mephisto.” 😂 Admittedly, based on that picture of the devil the kid pointed to, the thought wasn’t completely out of nowhere!
Speaking of villains, the Time Keepers seem MASSIVELY shady to me. Three beings deciding the fates of everyone across possibly infinite universes isn’t right. I hope this show does what Legends of Tomorrow did with the Time Masters and has them go away somehow. Would love to see Loki taking them down as the finale. Actually, now that I said it I wonder if that’s where the show is heading...
The Miss Minutes commercial that gave the background of the TVA reminded me very much of Secret Wars only a step to the left. Plot twist, the Time Keepers are actually Doctor Doom! Jk. (Now I’m thinking about that time Doom froze Loki in time and turned him into a sculpture...)
The TVA looks like a giant subway station filled with the most red tape-y police ever and I hate it. I’m pretty sure Loki does too. I’m pretty sure both of those things are on purpose, major props to whoever came up with that aesthetic. It’s basically the exact opposite of Asgard and an excellent counterpoint to anywhere Loki’s likely to have ever been.
The giant heads behind the judge (the Time Keepers I assume?) look VERY Kirby-esque and also very familiar, but I can’t figure out if they look familiar because of the Kirby style or because I’ve actually seen them in a comic. Will have to poke around and see if I can dig anything up. (My first thought is Celestials? My second is those gods the Asgardians worship whom Loki encounters in the final AoA issue. Though a quick google tells me the latter is majorly wrong. It’s been a hot minute since I read AoA.)
Mobius saying there’s no magic where the TVA is made me sad. The idea of there absolutely being magic in the universe and a place being completely without it makes me sad.
The Soul Stone being in that drawer hurt me. Sure Marvel, just rub in how pointless Gamora and Natasha’s deaths were some more, why don’t you.
I just had an epiphany- MOBIUS IS LIKE THE TVA’S VERSION OF PHIL COULSON. No I will not elaborate currently; it just feels true!
I miss Coulson. :( And his team. I know there’s all that corporate infighting between Marvel Studios and TV but the show I am by far the most salty about them refusing to acknowledge is Agents of SHIELD. Feige can say whatever he wants but I refuse to stop referring to any of the shows as MCU. He can pry them from my cold dead hands.
Getting off-topic so final thought is that all the multiverse theories about a single correct timeline (and especially all the stuff about Steve and his going back to the past 🙄) seem premature. We’re one episode into the show and the whole idea of one “correct” timeline/universe with benevolent Time Keepers watching over it seems extremely counterproductive to both actual good things- free will is important!- and to everything Loki’s story was ever likely to be about. Because Loki’s story is very much one of him asserting his free will and choice over the boxes everyone and everything else try to put him in.
...I lied, last one now: Speaking of the multiverse- I caught that Multiverse of Madness almost-namedrop in the Miss Minutes short, and I would love it if we got a surprise Loki team up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Give me a Stephen/Wanda/Loki team up, Marvel! And a real one this time, not one where Loki and Wanda are actually demonic hallucinations. So close but yet so far, Damnation event. So close.

Abandoned Loki Theories
My best friend and I tend to watch the same media, and Loki was no different. However, we no longer live in the same place, we have different schedules, and I am a much bigger Loki fan than she is (so I was much more likely to turn on the new episode as soon as I got home from work, no matter what). But since I want to remember everything I want to talk to her about after we both watch the episode, I have taken to making notes in my phone while watching. I usually condensed these notes into something more coherent before we talked, but I saved the original notes. I recently reread these incoherent, mostly caps-locked reactions, and compiled several ideas I had while watching episodes that I've since abandoned.
"Wait, is she a Timekeeper?" So this is a direct quote from one of my reactions, and I don't remember if I was referring to Renslayer or Sylvie, but I'm pretty sure it was one or the other. Obviously, since Renslayer didn't know she was a variant and the Timekeepers turned out to be fake anyway, I doubt either one is true.
C-20 isn't dead: Man, I hope this is still true; she and Sylvie had some great fake chemistry. I was once a spn fan (and my brain sometimes thinks I still am), and I refuse to accept death in shows if I don't see the body. But sadly I think if she was still alive she'd have shown up by now.
TVA planted memories of Sylvie's arrest as a child; she's really from post-Infinity War: So this was in part when I thought Sylvie was genderfluid like Loki, rather than a transwoman (as in consistently one gender), so the timeline as we know it was the same both events and gender-wise, and then at some point after faking their death, their gender shifted. Either Sylvie changed her name as an alias or as a fem name (or a name that better fits her just in her opinion; she can be Sylvie even if she's having a masc or nb day). But while I think it's possible for the TVA to have altered her memories (it's explicitly been stated that they can do it, after all), I think it's too involved for a side plot. There's too much else going on. Plus I think she's a transwoman not genderfluid.
Lamentis nexus event was a paradox; there can't be two variants together: I refuse to believe the nexus event was Sylvie and Loki falling in love (though that'd be a little paradoxical as well). I think the nexus event involves both of them, and I don't think it's for the reason Mobius thinks it is. But they were in the same place the entire episode, and the TVA didn't find them until right before they bit it, so I don't think it was just them together that caused it. I don't think it was love, at least not romantic. Loki doesn't even seem to consider this a possibility until Mobius suggested it. My new thought is this: either the catalyst is they both make the decision to trust each other (which is not something a Loki does often), or this is the moment Loki looks at Sylvie and for the first time sees the true scope of his own potential, stretching bright and beautiful and endless within this fearless, resilient version of him. This is a very subtle recreation of that one panel from I don't know which comic of a bunch of Lokis standing around and then they start whispering into each other's ears, "You can escape."
Tumblr media
(I do not know if this is a legit panel or an edit, I'm sorry.)
Various people being Loki variants-- Renslayer, Kang, etc.: This one makes sense for why I abandoned it. Both have variants (in Kang's case, at least, canonically many) of themselves that we've already seen.
Classic Loki is Old Loki from AoA: His character design, his age, the fact that Old Loki canonically messes with the timeline, too, it made sense before hearing his backstory. And listen, seeing Kid Loki and Old Loki at the very end of the episode? I spent an entire week going feral with AoA thoughts. But the backstory doesn't match up.
