Chapter Thirteen: Dawn (written for @zelinktines24 day 13 prompt)

When Zelda's lips meet Link’s, it feels like the sun bursting on the horizon, and soothing warmth spreads through his body. His arms wrap around her waist, pulling her closer. They kiss with a fervor that sends a shiver down his spine, and hiis knees tremble with the weight of his desire. Deepening the kiss, time seems to stand still as he loses himself in the intoxicating taste and touch of her. 

Zelda is pliant in his arms, pressing herself against him, tangling her fingers in his thick hair. Link feels like he’s been starving for this moment, and now that it’s happening, he doesn’t want it to end. After so much time apart, kissing her feels like the first time–foreign, new, and exciting. However, he can’t keep his mind from wondering if this is the best thing for them. Resuming the physical aspect of their relationship could complicate things. They still have unresolved issues, and have only begun to open up to one another again, building back the trust that’s been lost. 

As much as he wants to stay lost in her embrace, Link, reluctantly breaks the kiss, but keeps Zelda close, pressing his forward against hers. “I missed you so much.”

“I know. So did I.” Zelda’s voice is breathless, her fingers caressing the back of his head. “All I did was talk about you when we weren’t busy trying to defeat Ganondorf.”

At the mention of Ganon’s name, Link’s heart feels like it’s trying to claw its way out of his chest. Zelda stills her fingers in his hair when his shoulders tense and his arms stiffen about her. He releases her waist and takes a step back, feeling the magic of the moment dissipating. 

“I don’t know why I mentioned him,” Zelda whispers, dropping her hands to her sides.

Link takes several steadying breaths, trying to still his racing heart. He knows Zelda didn’t mean to bring up the man who’d been the root cause of all their misery and pain since the very beginning. Even though after Link smashed Ganondorf’s secret stone with the Master Sword and watched him implode in the atmosphere over Hyrule, how can they be certain he’s truly gone? They thought it was over when they sealed away the Calamity, but that had turned out to only be a temporary measure, while something even more horrendous still slumbered beneath the castle. Link realizes he has much more healing to do than he thought, and he isn’t certain his fear will ever be fully laid to rest. 

He looks at Zelda to find her face has crumpled, a deep worry line forming between beautiful green eyes reflecting a sudden sadness Link knows he’s put there. He reaches out a hand to gently cup her cheek. “It’s okay. I just need more time.”

“We both do.” Zelda closes her eyes, and places her hand over his, pressing her face into his palm. “I’ve caused you so much pain. I’m so sorry.”

Link knows they need to take it slow, and she may decide she can’t love him anymore, but he can’t let her think for a moment longer that he cares for her less now than he did before.  Pulling her into a tight embrace, he buries his face in her hair. “Love means never having to say you’re sorry, Zelda.”

I'm sorry! I promised fluff today, and this ended on angst (I forgot😅). Tomorrow, for sure, for V-day - fluff. Kilton makes an appearance!
