Animators who are about to make Ruthlessness videos!
I just want to say that I love you all very much! You are contributing your hard, creative work to our Epic community, and we viewers cannot thank you enough!
And I want to give you a small reminder: In this song, Odysseus' crew is stranded in the Land of the Giants (as said by Aeolus). They are the Laestrygonians, the cannibal giants who chanted along with Poseidon. It would be very cool if you drew them destroying the ships with Poseidon.
You can still do what you want, of course. It's only my opinion!

I've been wanting to do something like this for awhile now, and since it'll still be awhile before the album's fully complete, why not do it while only three are out? And what is it exactly? Essentially, comparisons. I've done quite a few similar posts with the Monkie Kid series already, in which I would talk about certain characters and the mythology behind them, with Journey to the West being my main reference point.
In this case, I'll of course be using the Iliad and the Odyssey for sources, specifically the Emily Wilson translations. I'll also be referring to other sources when necessary. They'll be pretty brief and will only cover up to where we are now, but here's your spoiler warning just in case (yes, even for a tale as ancient as this). Basically, think of this as a way to provide extra context. I intend to do this with each saga that's released.
Now, without further ado, let's begin. And as a disclaimer, I by no means claim to be an expert, I'm just someone who loves mythology and also happens to read a lot.
Tumblr media
THE HORSE AND THE INFANT: Lots of names are being dropped here, so let's start with the main man himself, ODYSSEUS (Ὀδυσσεύς)! He is the son of LAËRTES (Λαέρτης) and ANTIKLEIA (Ἀντίκλεια), who is a granddaughter of the god HERMES (Ἑρμης), which I'm sure many would agree would probably explain a lot! In some versions, Odysseus' biological father is said to have been SISYPHOS (Σίσυφος), another mortal trickster, albeit a far more villainous one. Either way, clearly this runs in the family! He also has a sister named KTIMENE (Κτιμένη). And of course, there's his lovely wife PENELOPEIA (Πηνελόπεια), more commonly known as Penelope, and their son TELEMACHOS (Τηλέμαχος).
Speaking of Penelope, the following story comes to us briefly from Pausanias' Description of Greece. Born in Sparta to King IKARIOS (Ικαριος) and the river nymph PERIBOEA (Περιβοια), it's said Princess Penelope was allowed to marry only after someone had beaten her father in a footrace. Of course, that someone ends up being Odysseus, but here's where the interesting part comes in: when discussing AIDOS (Αιδως), Modesty, Pausanias adds that Ikarius attempted to convince Odysseus to stay, and failing that, pleaded with Penelope. Odysseus, rather than challenge Ikarius or speak over his new bride, let her make the choice. But Penelope said nothing. Instead, she simply placed her veil over her face, her silent answer clear as day.
Next, we come to Telemachos, who was a newborn when his father left. However, it should be noted that Odysseus really didn't want to go. So much so that he feigned madness to try and get out of it, which was only foiled when PALAMEDES (Παλαμήδης) seized baby Telemachos and placed him right in front of where his father was recklessly ploughing the fields; Odysseus stopped immediately after noticing his son, but was then forced to join the war afterwards.
DIOMEDES (Διομηδης): one of the more notable Greeks during the Trojan War and a favorite of the goddess of wisdom alongside Odysseus, Diomedes was an intelligent and valiant soldier, to the point where he had even wounded the god of war himself. He also directly assisted Odysseus in Troy's downfall.
AGAMEMNON (Ἀγαμέμνων) and MENELAOS (Μενέλαος): Okay, these two have their own stories that I could make an entirely different post on, but for simplicity's sake, Agamemnon is the king of Mykenai and commander of the Akhaioí (Greeks); much of the Iliad concerns his feud with AKHILEUS (Ἀχιλλεύς) over the captive BRISEIS (Βρισηίς). Meanwhile, his brother Menelaos is king of Sparta and had been married to the reason this war started in the first place.
TEUCER (Τεῦκρος): one of the greatest archers, Teucer actually had Trojan blood through his mother HESIONE (Ἡσιόνη), who was the sister of King PRIAMOS (Πρίαμος), or Priam. Through his father TELAMON (Τελαμών), his elder half-brother is AIAS (Αἴας), or Ajax, the Greater.
AJAX THE LESSER: By the time of the Trojan War, there are two characters by the name of Ajax, with the Lesser referring to Ajax of Locris. He was known for having been a spearman and the fastest of the Greeks, but like many of his comrades, never made it back home after having earned the wrath of the gods.
NESTOR (Νέστωρ): the eldest of Greek army, he often offered wise, albeit long-winded, advice. At the end of the war, he was among the few who managed to return home safely.
HELEN (Ἑλένη): And now we get to the Reason. Well, sort of. Married to Menelaos and then PARIS (Πάρις), to blame the Trojan War solely on Helen would mean to disregard a lot of other things, such as the idea of KLEOS (κλέος)—glory—three powerful goddesses, a little golden apple, and even an entire plan to depopulate the earth. Sources vary as to whether Helen even left with Paris willingly, and that's not even getting into the versions where she didn't even make it to Troy at all! What is known, however, is that by the time we see her in the Iliad, Helen is nothing short of resentful. For example, during a confrontation with APHRODITE (Αφροδιτη), she says:
“You, goddess? Why do you want to trick me in this way? Will you keep leading me to yet more cities, in Phrygia or in fine Maeonia if any other mortal takes your fancy? Now Menelaus has defeated Paris, and wants to take me home with him again, although I am so hateful. Is that why you come to me now with these tricks of yours? Then go to him yourself and sit beside him! Give up the path of gods and let your feet never turn back again to Mount Olympus! Spend all your time on taking care of Paris, crying for him, until he makes you either his slave girl or his wife! But I will not ever go back. It would bring retribution. And I will never service that man’s bed. All of the Trojan women in the future will blame me if I do, and in my heart I will endure more pain than I can measure.”
Aphrodite threatens her immediately following this, forcing her to go and comfort her new husband, but not before Helen tells him:
“So you came back from the fighting. I wish that you had died out there, defeated by that strong man who used to be my husband. Before, you claimed you were superior to warlike Menelaus in your strength and hands and spear. So go on, challenge him! Call Menelaus back again to fight you! But no. I order you to stop. Do not make war and fight with ruddy Menelaus. It would be idiotic. You would soon lose and lie dead beneath that fighter’s spear.”
According to a fragmented poem called Ilias mikra ( Ἰλιὰς μικρά), or Little Iliad, when Odysseus and Diomedes are sneaking into the city to steal their PALLADION (Παλλάδιον)—a wooden statue fashioned by the goddess of wisdom herself and said to be Troy's protector—Helen recognizes them, but never alerts the people in the walled city.
In terms of family, Helen had at the very least a daughter—HERMIONE (Ἑρμιόνη)—who had been about nine when she left (sources vary on whether she had other children or not), and she was also a first cousin of Penelope on her father's side. Though speaking of TYNDAREUS (Τυνδάρεος), prior to Helen making her choice of husband, one of the suitors present had suggested that should she be taken by anyone else—of which there actually had been a precedent for thanks to a certain Athenian king—they would all take up arms against that person to get her back. This would become known as the Oath of Tyndareus. What a brilliant idea, Odysseus.
NEOPTOLEMOS (Νεοπτόλεμος): son of Akhileus and called PYRRHOS (Πύρρος) at birth, Neoptolemos joined towards the end of the war and helped bring about the fall of Troy. Though young when he was called to arms, many sources often emphasize his brutality during this time, while others—such as Euripides and Sophocles—show him to be kinder, albeit torn in regards to the situation he's in.
And as for his father, Akhileus had actually been killed by Paris of all people, though not without divine help. Paris himself would later be killed by the archer PHILOKTETES (Φιλοκτήτης), and of Priam's remaining sons, Neoptolemos is credited by the Roman Quintus with having killed the following: POLITES (Πολίτης), PAMMON (Πάμμων), and ANTIPHONUS (Ἀντίφονόν).
JUST A MAN: Which brings us to ASTYANAX (Ἀστυάναξ), the infant son of HEKTOR (Ἕκτωρ) and ANDROMACHE (Ἀνδρομάχη). He is indeed killed because the Greeks feared his potential retribution, but the exact details aren't entirely consistent. In one version, he's killed by Neoptolemos, in others by Odysseus, be it directly or indirectly. In Seneca's The Trojan Women, the child even leaps off the walls himself. It's only in much later traditions does he survive.
As for his father, Hektor was said to have been the greatest fighter of the Trojans and had shown great kindness towards Helen for all of the twenty years she'd spent at Troy (yes, according to the very end of the Iliad, Helen specifically had been at Troy for twenty years at that point). The poem ends with his funeral.
FULL SPEED AHEAD: EURULOKHOS (Εὐρύλοχος) is not only Odysseus' second-in-command, but also his brother-in-law. His home is near Ithaka, on the island of Same. Polites (different one, of course) meanwhile is a very minor character in the Odyssey, but is still referred to as Odysseus' devoted friend.
OPEN ARMS: The LOTOPHAGOI (λωτοφάγοι), or lotus-eaters, were a race who—when consuming from a specific plant—would fall into a state of apathy to the point of never wishing to leave. This incident in the Odyssey is actually incredibly brief, with the crew arriving and then leaving immediately after Odysseus forces the men who ate from the lotus back on the ship.
WARRIOR OF THE MIND: Throughout both the Iliad as well as the Odyssey, ATHENA (Ἀθηνᾶ) acts as Odysseus' patron goddess. The boar "only the best could kill" is likely in reference to the famous Kalydonian Boar Hunt, which Odysseus is actually never mentioned as having taken a part in, but his father Laërtes did, depending on the source. The poem does reference a boar hunt, though, one that caused Odysseus to get scratched when he was still young.
Tumblr media
POLYPHEMUS: In this song, we officially meet, well, POLYPHEMOS (Πολύφημος), the KYKLOPS (Κυκλωψ). Odysseus and his man arrive at his island immediately after they leave the land of the lotus-eaters, find a cave filled with cheese and sheep, and...
My crew begged, ‘Let us grab some cheese and quickly drive the kids and lambs out of their pens and down to our swift ships, and sail away across the salty water!’
That would have been the better choice. But I refused. I hoped to see him, and find out if he would give us gifts.
Obviously, this doesn't turn out to be the case. What needs to be understood, however, is that Odysseus and his crew were technically guests, so he would've expected Polyphemos to uphold XENIA (ξενία), sacred hospitality, something he even makes clear in the poem. He hadn't anticipated for Polyphemos to have no fear of the gods. The next morning, Odysseus gives him wine gifted to him by a priest of APOLLON (Ἀπόλλων) named MARON (Μάρων); Polyphemos finds it so delicious that he even compares it to nectar, the drink of the gods. Yet still, this wasn't enough to persuade the kyklops to free them.
SURVIVE: In the original poem, Odysseus is mentioned to have had several men eaten by Polyphemos, though the only one actually named is ANTIPHOS (Ἄντιφος).
REMEMBER THEM: It's worse in the poem.
‘Hey, you, Cyclops! Idiot! The crew trapped in your cave did not belong to some poor weakling. Well, you had it coming! You had no shame at eating your own guests! So Zeus and other gods have paid you back.’
[...]
My crew begged me to stop, and pleaded with me. ‘Please! Calm down! Why are you being so insistent and taunting this wild man? He hurled that stone and drove our ship right back to land. We thought that we were going to die. If he had heard us, he would have hurled a jagged rock and crushed our heads and wooden ship. He throws so hard!’
But my tough heart was not convinced; I was still furious, and shouted back again, ‘Cyclops! If any mortal asks you how your eye was mutilated and made blind, say that Odysseus, the city-sacker, Laertes’ son, who lives in Ithaca, destroyed your sight.’
Then it's immediately revealed this had been part of a prophecy.
Tumblr media
Like MY GOODBYE, I honestly don't think there's much for me to talk about STORM and LUCK RUNS OUT, at least not at the moment, so let's move on to KEEP YOUR FRIENDS CLOSE, where we meet AIOLOS (Αιολος)! His island in the sky is named, fittingly, Aiolia, and he lives there with his wife and twelve children. Though initially receiving Odysseus and his crew warmly, once the bag of winds was opened and returned them to the island, Odysseus tried to ask for his help again, but Aiolos simply demanded that they leave, figuring the men were disfavored by the gods.
And finally, we have RUTHLESSNESS! After being rejected by the wind god, the crew come across the LAISTRYGONES (Λαιστρυγονες), giants who ate the crew and destroyed the ships until only one vessel remained. According to Hesiod, they sprang from Laistrygon (Λαιστρυγων), whose father was POSEIDON (Ποσειδων).
Poseidon as he appears in many myths is, in one word, ruthless, cursing Odysseus almost as soon as his son Polyphemus prays to him for vengeance. In certain myths, he is also portrayed as a rival to Athena, such as when the two competed for dominion over the then unnamed Athens; Poseidon offered them the first horse and Athena the first olive tree. To quote Emily Wilson:
Whereas Poseidon favors the untamed world of the stormy sea, Athena loves fixed settlements and the olive tree—a crop whose oil was used in archaic Greece for cooking and skin care. Poseidon makes the earth shake; Athena makes even the most rugged, barren landscape available for cultivation.
As far as the Trojan War itself is concerned, according to many sources, Poseidon actually helped build the famous walls of Troy alongside Apollo, but when the king at the time, LAOMEDON (Λαομέδων), refused to pay them, Apollo sent a plague and Poseidon sent KETOS (Κητος), a sea monster which would then be slain by HERAKLES (Ἑρακλης) just before the monster could eat Princess Hesione; Laomedon, having learned nothing from last time, refused to pay Herakles, who would then go on to sack the city in retaliation. Poseidon would later side with the Greeks during the war, but here's the interesting part: while the Trojan War has no set date, one proposed theory is 1275 BC, as that was around when historical Troy (specifically Troy VI) was believed to have been destroyed by an earthquake. Furthermore, what animal was carved out of wood for the final ambush? A horse!

Эпик - Бессердечие - перевод
youtube

Ody Does Math
“Good morning, teacher.” sang the kids, faces radiating vitality.
Indeed, it was a good morning. You can hear the larks chanting in the forest, oak leaves whispering secrets of the wind, and see the open fields bathing in the blazing sunlight casted by Lord Helios. Every bit of this scenery was calling for your attention.
But now is not the right time for that. Commented Athena, in her mind. Now is the time for their math class, and none of them can escape this fact.
So she simply nodded to their greeting. So far so good. She gave a quick glance around the classroom. Odysseus, her favorite student, seemed rather eager for the class. He’s doing good as always, Athena thought. Eurylochus, on the other hand, seemed quite unsettled. Curious. Is it because of his homework? Athena wondered. And as she set her eyes on the next student, she called:
“What are you doing there, Mr. Polites?”
She could see his panic alright. But soon as Polites reclaimed himself she heard him say: “Sorry, Ms. Athena. I was just trying to pack this bag real quick.”
“What for?”
“Er, Ms. Athena…I don’t suppose this is the right place to say—”
“What for, Mr. Polites?”
He sighed. “It’s for a friend of mine, really. Today’s his birthday.”
As he finished, Athena caught a glimpse of the mild blush on Odysseus’s face. It wasn’t hard to figure out what exactly was happening here, but she merely said:
“Well, in that case, I might as well congratulate this friend of yours with a ‘happy birthday’. Hope he gets to be a valiant warrior, a warrior of the mind. And yes, you may sit down, Mr. Polites.”
As everybody settled on their seats, Athena quickly chalked a line of Greek on the blackboard. It reads: ΣΤΟΙΧΕΙΑ ΓΕΩΜΕΤΡΙΚΑ (Elements of Geometry). As soon as she finished, she said:
“Welcome to today’s math class, everyone. We’ll begin with a discussion on a simple problem in your textbook. Now, please turn to page 43, and evaluate the problem quickly. I’ll ask for your ideas in a few minutes.”
It’s not hard. Thought Odysseus. Just some simple geometry. You draw a perpendicular BC at point B with half the length of AB, and…
“Mr. Eurylochus, if you may?”
Eurylochus’s hesitation was all written on his face. And his silence was loud enough to speak for his cluelessness. I should help him. However, it’s not my turn. Thought Odysseus.
Athena apparently noticed something. “Mr. Odysseus, if you may?”
“Yes ma’am. You need to draw a perpendicular BC…now we have an auxiliary right triangle ABC, right? Draw an arc with center C and radius BC intersecting the hypotenuse at a point D. Then draw an arc with center A and radius AD intersecting AB at a point, say E. Now E should be the golden ratio point.”
“Good job. Now prove it.”
”Prove it?” now it was Odysseus’s turn to hesitate, but he hoped that he didn’t show it. However, Athena was quick to pick up something…else. “Well,” he started, “all I gotta do is…huh, what’s this bag for?”
A look at Polites was sufficient to explain everything.
“Mr. Polites! You seem quite eager to hand the present out, I see. Why don’t you give Mr. Odysseus a hand, by proving this point E to be the golden ratio point as he claims?”
Polites was eager, alright. He stood up swiftly, and said, “May I have a chalk, Ms. Athena?” After a moment Polites finished the proof on the chalkboard, saving the day. Then Athena complimented both Polites and Odysseus, and the class moved on.
But Eurylochus was uncomfortable with the compliment that Odysseus had received. Geometry is his strong point alright, thought Eurylochus, but let’s just wait till we get to arithmetics.
And soon they got to arithmetics. But there were only 10 minutes left for the class. So Athena decided to give a little quiz.
“I have a challenge, a test of skills.” said Athena, “the problem is, are you all ready for it?”
All nods. Ok. “Then let us begin by introducing a geographic fact. This is Troy, 600 miles away from us if you travel by sea. Now suppose that a ship travels at a speed of 5.755 miles per hour without the wind, and it is heading from Troy to Ithaca in full speed, and when it is 2.8 miles away from Ithaca it takes a turn to Temesa, sailing through 290 miles in total, and from there to Aeaea 158 miles away. Suppose the ship sails in a uniform speed, without any wind. How long does it take in total?”
Odysseus could see their expressions clearly. He could see Eurylochus busy doing the calculations, which wasn’t a surprise at all since he was so good at it. I could use a good right-hand man like him. Odysseus thought. And let’s see how Polites is doing. He seems to be struggling with it, which is not a good sign…
But what are you doing, Odysseus?
He had no idea. To be honest he haven’t even figured out how a decimal point works, but he’ll do it anyway, after all he’s a warrior of the mind! What do those miles add up to? 420? 420 divided by 5.755 is…730, right? Wait that 730 looks so familiar…isn’t that twice as long as 365 days? My goddess, that’s a really long time!
“Mr. Odysseus, what’s your answer?” From afar, he could hear Athena calling to him. But this time, there is no more hesitation. He had found his confidence. He knew his result to be true, though somehow he doubted the validity. But he’s gonna answer it anyway, knowing that had it been wrong, the fault was not his at all, but Athena’s. She provided the data, didn’t she? So nothing can go wrong. Just you chill, just you stand, just you answer.
Ma’am…it’s two long years.”

Seedlauncher “Seed launchers were devices that were used to plant seeds in agriculture. Though they resembled blaster pistols, they fired a seed which would quickly sprout into a vine. “ As Ziv mostly fights with the herbal neurotoxins, hallucinogens, Poisons, nacotics,  spores and explosive (like grenade moss) to make sure attackers do not come close to her or can not attack her in the fist place. Ziv still has a ‘no killing’ philosophy. The seedlauncher is her way to get the plants whichs growth she can manipulate closer to a attacker or to sidestep the problem of Consitor Sato needing actual plants to work as a forceability, so she takes those plants with her. It has also the adventage that when she is unarmed that this weapon can not be used against her. Consitor Sato is after all  not exactly a well known Forceability. Usually Ziv uses the seeds in the seedlauncher to just let the seeds grow into strong vines and pin a attacker to the ground so they are unable to move. After all to pull someone by the feet with roots into the soil until their neck so they could not move is only possible in enviorments with soil and roots, so Ziv has to be creative and bring that enviorment with her. Ziv is not exactly a sharpshooter but she can use her general awareness of the enviorment through the Force and the vibration in the air caught in her whiskers to know where to shoot at to hit somemone.
Aiaia The Reeksa Sproutling Aiaia had been given as a seed to Ziv and many other AgriCorps Adepts when she had joined the AgriCorps and after the events with the blueshadow Virus on Naboo to secure a steady supply for the plants roots. Ziv had raised the Reeksa into a small plant and the semi-sentintplant loves Ziv like a puppy. The Tynnan loves her too very much. The Reeksa had grown two flower heads but is still small enough for Ziv to carry them in a cylinder-like small transperisteel container that she bounds to her Rucksack. Ziv had trained Aiaia like a guarddog and usually takes off the cap of the small container so the Reeksa could watch over her when Ziv is sleeping. This is such a habit that the Tynnan had started to curl around Aiaias container like a pillow and she will actually curl around pillows or people when she has not Aiaia close. The trust between the two beeings is strong enough that Ziv allowes Aiaia to tap into her lifeenergy that Ziv can make them grow in the span of seconds but the way Aiaia moves and how far they grow is up to them. In that Manner Aiaia is more like an attackdog listening to commands, but making their own choices. The Reeksa is trained not to kill attackers, but they tend to “chew in selfdefence”. Aiaia more than often helps the Tynnan climb and go through wild enviorments by growing, reaching up and pulling Ziv by her rucksack with them. Having a living grapplehook that could also bite people, has its adventages.
Herbsickle More a tool than anything else, but the Herbsickle is always with Ziv when she is working. Although in active combat situations the curved blade of which only the inside is sharp, is more a hinderance. This does not mean that Ziv had not before cut a Stormtroopers heels with it.
Brylark Wood Splinters [ Inquisitor Verse | V: Laestrygonian  ] Even as a Inquisitor Ziv is barely ever using her lightsaber and relies more on her usage of Consitor Sato and her arsenal of herbal toxins and chemicals. Although in a more agressive way. Brylark wood is a wood that is used for building Ligtsabers and is therefor as sturdy as metal and can whithstand blasterbolts and a limited amount of lightsaberstrikes before eventually breaking appart. Ziv had bound splinters of Brylark Wood to her forearm to use as projectile or grow into a shield to block attacks. She can easily regrow the pieces from fibres with Consitor Sato and Force-Healing.
Makashi-Hilt-Lightsaber [ Padawan Verse | V: Moly ] Originally Ziv had specifically trained in the Second Form, so she could learn how to beat her Clanmembers in ligtsabercombat. Accordingly she had and still has a curved Makashihilt. In her mainverse Zivs kybercrystal is broken after what happned to her in Order 66, so the lightsaber is useless. Only years later she gets a Blackwingcrystal. In her Padawan Verse Ziv uses her lightsaber more frequently, although Makashi is not a form good for big battles and is a form specifically made for Lightsaber vs. Lightsaber combat. The Form 2 relies on nimble foodwork to avoid beeing hit, and fast, specific jabs on the opponent. In combination with her medical training, Ziv had learned to specifically go for her opponents joints and acupuncture-points to paralyse limbs and stop people from moving without killing them. Ziv still uses this knowledge and training even without her lightsaber by using metalrods or staffs to jab for joints and certaine points on a opponents body, so they nolonger can continue fighting her. The Tynnans ligtsaber is made of cooper metal with a few parts of Brylarkwood. While Ziv is a pretty good lightsaber -combatant, her style is more made for duels or against a small group and not open battlesituations in which another Form would be more suitable.

Wolfy, I remember you promised Odysseus' scar lore. Where is it 👀
Haha it's not that's complicated, he has like 3 main scars on his face that I draw and a bit more on his body

For the cyclops/laestrygonians thing, it's when they start chucking boulders lmao. I'm thinking maybe Laestrygonians, one of the rocks thrown landing on some loose stone/debris and breaking apart like shrapnel. (Though if you're following it through the epic the musical, it would've been during the cyclops saga)
Thrinacia is when Zeus shipwrecks the crew, and rocks on phaeacia is when Poseidon rouses a storm and he tries to go to land on Phaeacia's rocky shores

Analysis about how Percy treats Tyson in SoM
I've seen a lot posts about Percy being really shitty to Tyson in SoM because he's a cyclops, so I wanted to take a closer look at his actions and words towards Tyson in that book.
So this is how Percy (and Sally) treat Tyson before they find out he's a cyclops. Feel free to skip the quotes; I summarize the takeaways below.

So to summarize all of the above:
Both Sally and Percy are doing their best to help Tyson, but they're understandably overwhelmed. Sally doesn't have the finances to adopt Tyson, but she does everything she can like making Tyson feel welcomed in her family with Percy, taking him out to shops, having Percy ride the subway with him, and nagging social services to do something about Tyson's homeless situation.
Percy also does what he can: he completely commits social suicide by sticking close to Tyson. No-one aside from Tyson is willing to talk to Percy because he decided to protect Tyson (this is important later on, so remember it).
Percy goes out of his way to help in smaller ways: he buys Tyson lunch - and extra sandwiches to cheer him up. He guards Tyson when he's changing his clothes. He realizes that Tyson has been through some hard times, and responds by being really gentle with Tyson - both mentally and physically. He's so intent on protecting Tyson, that he's a little blind about the fact that Tyson can handle himself physically, with the laestrygonians and the bulls.
He verbally defends Tyson from Matt Sloan, Annabeth and the 3 ladies driving the cab when they insult Tyson, even though Percy knows that Tyson looks/smells bad.
Now let's look at how Percy thinks and acts around Tyson after finding out that he's a cyclops. Again, feel free to skip the quotes; I summarize the takeaways below in the reblog.

Events in the Odyssey, ranked by how often they show up in retellings and adaptations
I have read, watched, and listened to many an Odyssey retelling in my day (my day = the last month or so) and I have noticed some Patterns.
Iconic Odyssey Momence™
These are the defining episodes of the Odyssey. Every adaptation of the Odyssey HAS to have:
The lotus-eaters
The Cyclops
Poseidon is Angery
The sirens
Scylla and Charybdis
Mix-n-Match
If there is a little bit more time, a little bit more dedication to faithfulness, or a little bit more mature target audience, these are the important events that fill out the narrative:
Circe
Calypso
the bag of winds
Penelope weaves the shroud
the journey to the underworld
Odysseus returns home and murders the suitors
the Trojan Horse, if the reteller remembers that that story was actually relayed in the Odyssey
Deep Cuts
Really only the completionists include these:
Athena hangs out with Telemachus
Nausicaä
the men eat the sacred cattle of Helios (this is such an important moment in the poem and comes up in adaptations weirdly rarely)
Telemachus dicks around in Sparta
Literally nobody ever includes these
I had no idea these were a thing until I started reading the Odyssey:
raiding the Ciconeans on Ismarus
the Laestrygonians
Telemachus dicks around in Pylos

makeup: Does your OC wear makeup? How often? What kind? Why do they wear makeup, and do they like it?
OC Asks: Character Design Edition !
As a Teenager (around the age of 13-18) Ziv used a thick black paste made as make-up for Species with pelts and fur, as eyeliner. She had gotten the recipe as a young teenager from Clonetroopers in the sickbay (if one finds creative ways to express individuality through makeup while beeing on a military budges of zero credits in the middle of a warzone, than it were the clones) and prepared it herself with cole and a little fat she usually used for herbal salves. However, usually she only applied it in the morning and considering her very long workdays later as a Healer and learning-days back in the Temple, the eyeliner usually turned into bludged dark Cricles under her eyes after around three hours. It was eventually another way of expressing individuality and the fact that she was a sentient beeing that should not be treated like a plushie by others, for Ziv.
Nowdays, as Ziv had found other ways to express herself like her piercings, she had stopped using the paste for make-up as she had matured enough to be stable in her personality and self-expression. She would still use the eyeliner if a partner would want her to doll-up for a date, but it is nolonger a all-day-habit for her.
Zivs Inquisitor AU-Self does not use make-up but she usually has a broad streak of something that looks like (darkgreen, black or red) warpaint over her muzzle beneath her eyes and occiasionally over her shoulders and chest. This is very far from make-up or warpaint, for its actually a poison which is for most aliens taking in through the mucosal. Ziv is by now as to most of her poisons in every verse, immune through purposeful long exposure (in combination with beeing an expert in detecting most poisons through smell and taste). The poison, permanently warmed and evaporating in the air through Zivs very high bodyheat, is a plantjuice that will when taking in cause a sudden release of Adrenaline, speed up the heartrate, makes people nauseous until even vomiting, speed up the breathing, and goes from people feeling "very uncomfortable to be around or approach Ziv" to with long enough exposure "genuinely feeling panic". It In other words, makes people fuckin terrified. It usually does not work on people with a breathingfilter/ covered nose, mouth and eyes. The plant use the effect to keep natural enemies away so it would not be eaten and Ziv uses it to do just the same and make anyone very uncomfprtable to approach her, come close to her or spend time around her. The space-hamster is scary- Ask @retrocognizantrecreant !
