My dear friend got me into Mortal Kombat (specifically MKI, don't ask me about the older ones the very fact that the switched Sub-Zero and Scorpion but also Bi-Han?? Is dead?? confuses the shit out of me and that's just the tip of the iceberg) by comparing the franchise to the soapy, insane nature of X-Men comics which of course worked.

But something both franchises share, I'm learning, are HORRIBLE naming conventions. Like names that just make no goddamn sense. Shang Tsung??? Both surnames. They call "Kenshi Takahashi" just Kenshi sometimes so you think the names are in an anglicized order but Kung Lao?? Kung is a surname?? A diaspora surname?? And do not get me STARTED ON THE BROTHERS AGAIN, like is Kuai their last name?? It is a surname?? But then why doesn't Bi-Han have it?? HELP???? Basically, I am just wondering, if like X-Men there are fans who have tried to Fix this. One of my favorite X-Men characters is Xuân Cao Mạnh and I know for a fact that in the years before Marvel got a Vietnamese writer to fix her damn name a lot of Vietnamese fans had headcanons to try to make her name sound similar? But actually function as a Vietnamese name. Have people done this for Mortal Kombat?? If you have, I would love to hear them. Names are cool! Characters deserve names that Work! So I'm curious.

Starts off great! Unfortunately it falls under the ‘by midway it gets draggy and progressively gets more draggy,’ category. It’s still watchable in a way, a bit cliche, fluffy, although forgettable. Main leads have top notch chemistry while I thought the secondary characters were sometimes skippable. So I kept my fast forward button handy and skipped quite a lot making it more of a easier watch for me.

I've been researching turtle-type fantastical beasts of ancient China for my article on the Tulu Xuanwu in MDZS and its symbol as a foreshadowing of Wei Ying's path and ending in his first life.

This was one of the possible candidates. I figure I might as well scan the art and translate the text from the Shanhai Jing and post this as a fandom resource.

Xuan Gui 旋龜 (lit. the Spinning Turtle)- Shanhai Jing / Classics of Mountains and Seas (circa 4th century BCE)

My Translation:

Text from the 4th century BCE Shanhai Jing: From Nuyang mountain comes a strange stream. This stream flows to the East and pours into the Xianyi River. In this stream live many black turtles. These creatures have the body of a turtle, the tail of a Hui snake (*: a type of ancient, fantastical, poisonous snake), and the head of a bird.

Its name is Xuan Gui. Its cries are like chopping wood. Wear it on your body to cure or prevent deafness. It can be used to treat foot calluses.

Explanation text from modern anthropologists: Other than Xuan Gui, the Shanhai Jing also mentions other fantastical turtles, such as the three-legged turtle, the Liang Gui, Gui, etc... Turtles are sacred in ancient beliefs. They are seen as the spiritual bridge between heaven and earth, the divine and the mortal. During the Yin Shang Dynasty (a semi-mythical dynasty over 3500 years ago, from 1766 BCE - 1122 BCE. All historical records of this dynasty are lost, and it's only mentioned in texts of a more fantastical nature), turtle shells were used for divination. During the Zhou Dynasty (Wu Zetian's Dynasty, 690 - 705), there existed court officials whose task was to divine the future using turtle shells.

In the Book of Rites (禮記 Lǐ Jì, one of the five founding classical texts of Ancient China, 213 BCE), the turtle is counted among the Four Sacred, alongside unicorn, phoenix, and dragon.

The ancients held the turtle in such high regard due to several reasons. One, its long life span (in ancient times, creatures with long life spans are believed to have a degree of sentience and the potential for the spark of the divine). Two: because the shape of the turtle symbolizes heaven and earth, and the four cardinals). In summary, the turtle symbolizes the ideal values of ancient people: long life, sedentariness, high esteem, and purity of heart.

A/B/O. Jingsu. Long fic. Aww I'm aware of my tendency to ramble on about the author's writing style, but this author's prose is stunningly intricate. This would be the one I would recommend if one is to read any A/B/O fics. Get ready for a "moderate" truckload canonical of angst and many happy returns in its eventual HE.  I don’t really know, this is just so – good? Lin Shu was initially an Alpha who turned into an Omega after the Chiyan incident, and he subconsciously rejects that part of himself, more or less. It is rare in the world the author built for Omegas to take up huge roles in society, and Changsu hides his status in light of that and appears to other people as a Beta (but then the author spends so much time describing how beautiful he is and those descriptions are beautiful indeed lmao). So here comes Jingyan, who, by accident, discovers Changsu’s status as an Omega and becomes infatuated with his being → and so begins the courting.  But Point is, I really enjoyed the way Changsu’s resilience is depicted – the mental fortitude? determination? Ehh anyway there’s a scene on that and it’s beautiful. Also! there’s an explicit scene halfway that is so. well. written? not in the hot smutty way but it’s exquisite really I’m weirding myself out I’ll stop hahaha don’t know if that plugging worked.

Like two fish in a dried lake, instead of giving each other moisture with the little that is left, let us let life be and forget each other in rivers and lakes.    身侧再无知交，国君茕茕而立：画地为牢、许此生一诺。 ——《此生一诺》 The emperor stands, tall and alone, by his side his peers no longer: he carves a circle into the ground and holds himself hostage; he makes a vow and has it as his life’s work. //Okay these aren’t actually quotes lol. Let me have my fun.   Jingsu. Very slight/gen. Oneshot.   How would things end, had MCS not returned to Meiling in his final days? How would it go on, had MCS died after his encounter with Xia Jiang at the Xuan Jing Bureau?    These are two separate oneshots from the same author. While 此生一诺 is very popular, 月盈‧有憾 is instead my favourite oneshot among all. It is so beautifully written and the angst is real in this one. Could be considered a BE perhaps? There’s joy in this nonetheless.

Pre-Sujing uh… slow burn? Long fic. The only WIP that I highlighted in red uwu. It goes without saying that I am totally smitten with this fic. Jingyan is sent to the Yan Kingdom by his father as hostage. Changsu, who is aiding a Yan Prince at their behest, approaches Jingyan in such circumstances and offers him ascension to the throne back at Da Liang. The prose is stunningly beautiful and classical and it’s hard to describe, the “aesthetic 澹泊 and 君子之交淡如水 vibes” this piece gives off – just – I’m very very in love with this fic please give it a go.   The author has kindly uploaded their chapters on ao3, so you can use that for convenient reading! The latest few chapters, however, are only on Lofter so you might have to move over for that.

Jingsu and Shuhuang. Long fic. Changsu and Lin Shu are two separate entities in this fic! Story starts with a younger Changsu entering Jinling to bring a warning to the Lin family upon intercepting Li Chongxin’s counterfeit. Changsu then schemes with Prince Qi and Lin Xie among others to preclude Chiyan’s demise and secure Prince Qi’s position as the crown prince. Changsu may not be Lin Shu in this fic, but he is still very proficient as the Chief of the Jiangzuo Alliance and has experienced much upon the passing away of his father, the former chief of the alliance. Jingyan slowly falls in love with him (slowburn I suppose?) and he with him. A very complete tale with flowing prose (the way the dialogue is written in particular is chef’s kiss) and a super sweet ending :D    (I don’t think a completed version of this fic has been circulated about as much? Jingsu very slight/gen. Oneshot, set in a world where Prince Qi has passed away but Lin Shu and the like are still alive. Scholar/teacher MCS (again, not Lin Shu!) stands in for Sir Zhou at the imperial palace and gets acquainted with Jingyan.    Have I mentioned how much I love this author? Yes, same author as above; their prose is elegant in a flowing way and I’m in love. I would say slight BE/angst based on how you interpret it? (Personally I’ve become immune and it is a happy ending ><) Though short, this fic well conveys the core character of MCS in which he contributes in his own way despite not being subject to the Chiyan case in the past. I like how it is written a lot ^^.

That is true. If only historical accuracy would be key to popularity, so many ugly things would die.

I get the appeal. The person who writes these knows what they are doing. It has sizzle appeal and the writer uses historical quotes, historical architecture then builds the narrative. The little lines he quotes are correct (bar the google translation issue) in the "those are words sound" and so it looks really academic and smart, he uses what seems like statistics. Also will be fascination for western audiences who don't usually see eastern posts

By putting that kernel of truth, the lies can be built around it. Twisting the narrative based on the words, cutting and splicing quotes so they are out of context to be framed in the narrative they want. Your quoting Fu Xuan, a figure of the time and noted scholar, it gives validity even as you take the line out from the original intent to suggest something they didn't actually mean. Who is to know it is incorrect? But via using those archaeological and primary sources, it seems convincing.

Such thing spread around faster then the truth.
