I think I've touched on this briefly before but I wanted to make a separate post on it. The topic is Dean and Lisa. I did an earlier post on Amelia and Sam and I think Dean and Lisa had somewhat of a similar relationship.

Dean only went to Lisa because he promised Sam. He would not have gone if he didn't make that promise. All she had been to Dean was someone he had had a good time with years ago and then he and Sam had saved her kid. Did he care for Lisa and Ben? To a point. We know Dean was a mess after Sam died and pretty much was the entire year. When he saw Sam after Sam came to save him from the Djinn the first thing he asked was if he was in Heaven. He'd rather be dead with Sam then continue the whole white picket fence thing. He was not happy. He never would have been happy. Would have always been distracted. He even said he looked for ways to get Sam out. Honestly, I wonder how long it would have taken for him to figure out Death could do it. If Sam hadn't shown up Dean would have continued to look and eventually become so reckless he would have died from hunting if he started again or even from alcohol. ( He had been drinking a lot during that year. Plus, Jensen said if Sam died in season 15 he would have died from alcohol so I could see the same thing happening here.)

The reason I say their relationship is similar to Sam and Amelia is because they both stopped them from doing something stupid or reckless. Dean was given a normal life and something else to focus on so he did last the as long as he did. Sam, I believe, was being reckless when he hit the dog and took him to the vet. If he hadn't hit the dog who knows what would have happened.

I've seen some people on Reddit who seem to think that Dean didn't go just because he promised Sam so I wanted to post my take on it. Please let me know if you agree or not.

imo one of supernatural's greatest weaknesses is what i'm going to call its locational homogeneity. like. obviously this is largely a side effect of filming a show set all over the united states in the same small area of canada for 15 years but there's just a certain sameness to every location and every episode that's uncanny at best and breaks immersion at worst. they should have gone all in on southern gothic horror and spooky old northeastern coastal towns and rural midwestern isolation and instead it's just episode after episode of identical suburbs with arbitrary location titles slapped over them. the seasons never change. the weather is always mild, never with extreme enough temperature or precipitation to require a change from the standard jacket-over-flannel-over-tee costuming even when we see snow on the ground. this episode is set in the summer in idaho. no, wait, it's set in the winter in kentucky. this episode is set in the summerfallwinterspring in kansachusettohiowa. sam and dean travel all over the country and yet stay completely still. supernatural shows us a massive world and it does not turn and absolutely no one lives in it.

The scene where Dean wakes up from a nightmare a little before his alarm in 6.01 is such a specific thing, and the way Lisa immediately shifts over and checks on him (along with Dean's dialogue later in the episode about persistent nightmares over the whole year) gives us these tiny little insights into their dynamic and how Dean's been managing... and despite Dean putting himself down about it later, it's clear that he's improved a lot over the course of a year.

Ever since coming back from hell in season 4, Dean has dealt with nightmares. We see Dean startle awake from a nightmare about hell in 4.03. In 4.08, it's specifically pointed out to us that Dean has been drinking more heavily to cope with his nightmares specifically.

This is further addressed in 5.11 "Sam, Interrupted", when Dean "tells" Dr. Cartwright (really talking to himself since she's a figment of his imagination) the following:

DR. CARTWRIGHT: How many drinks do you have a week? DEAN: Well, I gotta sleep sometime. So, uh, what's seven days times--somewhere in the mid fifties.

Dean drinking large amounts of alcohol as a sleeping aid is shown to us again (visually only) in 5.16, when the episode opens on Dean asleep in a motel, with several empty beer bottles littered around his bed.

In 6.01 though, we see Dean's drinking has cut back. Dean's still having nightmares, but he's sleeping through the night, waking just a little before his alarm, and with only a nightcap—not chain-drinking beers (5.16) or drinking hard liquor straight from the bottle to rid his mind of the remnants of a nightmare (5.08). Under his bed, instead of a liquor bottle, there's a gun and a jar of holy water.
