I've seen people before saying that, in terms of presentation, NIKKE delivers it better than Arknights in telling what they want to tell. And I still see this occasionally whenever people start comparing stories in gacha games. Looking at your post, seems like that wasn't a lie at all.
Right, this is an interesting topic for me, so let me give my two cents on this.
I would say that statement is generally true. Nikke's main strengths are its presentation and knowing how to leverage its strengths in general, but let's focus on presentation: It's story is nothing to write home to (note that I am up to Chapter 18), neither are its events (on this regard, take me lightly, I've only read three), but what Nikke wants to say, you will very clearly understand. It's good at telling its story. Sometimes the localization will have Localization Moments (Chatterbox is described as female in the first cutscene he is mentioned, male every time afterwards; there's a lot of clearly literally translated little expressions that make no sense in the flow of the conversations), but overall, even though you're looking at a story that in a lot of ways you've seen a lot of times, its particularities stand out because Nikke tells them properly, concisely, and clearly. Characterization is consistent, and there's a good amount of care clearly put into both consistency and overarching important parts of the narrative; a favorite example of mine is how, in the tutorial, if you pay close attention, you can actually see Marian's eyes glow red during her reload animation, foreshadowing something pretty important that happens with her later.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So even if the story beats are not particularly good or intriguing -- and sometimes, outright terrible, like in Chapter 18 oh god I hate Chapter 18 -- you at least can tell with clarity what's going on and why it's going on.
Arknights has the yang to the yin here, somewhat: The stories on Arknights tend to range from okay to great, and AK events have a habit of going pretty damn hard, either as a whole or at least parts of them. Sometimes, however, they have a weakness, and this weakness is that the actual story telling can be dense. Density is often attributed to good writing, but the truth is, sometimes, the text isn't advanced, it's simply clumsy, and the prose in Arknights is decidedly clumsy. But when you actually untangle the spaghetti of clumsy prose, you find some strong story telling, strong characterization, and topics you don't often find discussed in video games, less so in gacha. You kinda have to work for it, basically.
Something Nikke does good is also that it keeps its relevant cast at any given story beat low, giving it more cohesion, or rather, making it easy to stay cohesive, because Arknights can handle larger casts pretty well sometimes, but I'll be frank, the current main story has so many literal whos to keep track of that I'm supposed to be invested in that I don't really bother. I'm sorry, but I can't really feel a damn thing about Outcast when she showed up for a few scenes and then got nuked off by a contrivance while fighting some faceless nobodies we are told we should fear.
But on the other hand, Nikke narrative, again, despite its strong delivery, is still built on a feeble base for the most part. I only think of a few characters I care about in Nikke, because a lot of the cast is just fluff and Obligatory Archetypes (bunny girls, school girls, maids, etc), whereas in Arknights, I care about a whole damn lot of them, even those without events, because their files and modules paint a very integral and intriguing picture of them. Even smaller scenes in Arknights sometimes can have a big emotional impact, due to its extensive and well crafted worldbuilding and its clever use of its elements in every event, something Nikke cannot claim, because worldbuilding in Nikke is almost non existent.
They both have their strengths, basically, and it's fascinating to me, a writer, to take a deeper look at them.

You've discovered that counting the days you've been stuck here is surprisingly therapeutic.
The act of keeping track of time, the passage of each day, and the steady increase in numbers is actually calming to you. It provides a sense of order and purpose in an otherwise chaotic and uncertain situation.
However, there is one individual who, sadly, has been known to disturb this peaceful atmosphere from time to time.
"Heeeey, newbie!" The words stretched out into the still air, seemingly echoing with the sound of anticipation.
Your body tensed up in response, ready to either fight or run (well... hop away, since your body didn't quite have legs), depending on the situation. You looked around, scanning the still unfamiliar surroundings for the man who had called out to you.
You had always found Jax's careless and sarcastic attitude to be a bit much, especially in these quiet moments. You were grateful for the moments of peace that you were able to indulge in, but his sudden, loud voice always seemed to ruin the tranquility.
"Hey... Jax." Your words were slow, measured, as if you were gauging his intentions before fully acknowledging his presence. The weary expression on your face was apparent, as if you were exhausted from the day's events and uncertain of how to proceed.
"Y'know, I've been looking for you!" His voice held a hint of playfulness, but the smile that spread across his face was somewhat forced.
As he stepped closer, you instinctively hopped back, your body responding on its own to the sudden invasion of your personal space.
"Oh... have you?" You managed to let out a weak chuckle, the tension in your voice palpable as you uttered.
"Sure have," he purred, "you're quite hard to find — even with that big crate of yours." His tone was full of a peculiar mix of amusement and malice, as if he were toying with you like a cat with a ball of yarn.
As his hand leaned over to pat the side of your box, you felt a wave of unease wash over you, like a storm was brewing inside you. He was too close, and you could feel his breath on your skin. The rhythmic patting was almost hypnotic, but you knew that it was a ploy to distract you and get too close for comfort.
Despite the conflicting emotions, you couldn't help but acknowledge the fact that he was right — you had been hard to locate, it was on purpose.
But somehow, he had managed to find you.
"Anywhoooo," he trailed off with a low hum, snapping you out of your thoughts, "Caine wanted me to grab ya n' whatnot... says there's a new game to be played with 'nother newbie."
You could only stare at him in stunned silence, your brows furrowed and your mind racing as you tried to make sense of his words.
"A new person?" you repeated back to him, your tone laced with a hint of incredulity.
He shrugged his shoulders in a dismissive gesture, turning away from you with a nonchalant sway of his hands. He stops abruptly when he realizes you're not following him, his face contorting into a deep groan as frustration boils just beneath the surface.
His patience seemed to have run thin, as he turned to face you with an exaggerated sigh. "Are you coming, or what?" he asked, his tone sharp and exasperated. You flinched at the sudden shift in his demeanor, surprised with his attitude.
His eyes narrow as he realizes you're not moving, his hand resting on his hip with annoyance. Before he can voice his frustrations, you blurt out a hesitant apology, feeling embarrassed and scared by his sudden change in demeanor.
His silence feels heavy, as if it's pushing down on you, making you feel small and vulnerable. You wish he would say something, anything to break the tension that feels as if it's threatening to crush you. But you can't seem to find the strength to speak either, feeling trapped by the silence between you.
"...Ya need me to carry you?" He breaks the silence, the anger of his immediately washed away.
His offered gesture of what you could only assume to be kindness makes you feel confused... and even a little guilty, even though you're not sure why.
He must've sensed your confusion, for he quickly adds another question, "Or would you prefer that I drag you by your box?" His tone is playful, and his grin grows wider as he waits for your response.
"I'd prefer you to not touch m—" You try to finish your sentence, but your words are lost as you're suddenly lifted off of the ground without any warning.
"Jax!!!"
Two days have passed since the stranger arrived, and they have yet to fully adjust to their surroundings.
Their skittishness was all too familiar, their hesitancy to explore this strange new realm mirroring your own. You've seen their apprehension and fear, the uncertainty in their eyes as they gaze around at the unfamiliar landscape.
It's clear that they're still adjusting to their surroundings, and you can't help but feel empathetic towards their plight.
Jax, on the other hand, didn't seem to care. As the new person stumbled around, you watched in disbelief at his display of apathy.
He seemed to derive a strange pleasure from making the new person miserable.
He would go out of his way to sabotage and humiliate them, tripping them and making a spectacle of their misfortune. His laughter seemed to ring out louder and more harshly every time he saw the new person stumble and fall, each cruel act seeming to bring him more pleasure.
You finally decided to confronted him about this.
"What is wrong with you?" You shout at the rabbit, your voice laced with anger and frustration as you grip the walls of your box tightly. Your eyes are narrowed as you stare him down, your body trembling with the intensity of your emotions.
"What do ya mean?" He counters, his tone casual, almost playful, his smirk never fading. The smugness radiates off of him, making the air heavy and oppressive.
His nonchalant response only serves to further frustrate and anger you, the intensity of your emotions only growing stronger as the rabbit continues to play dumb. You can't understand how he could be so unaware, so disconnected from the harm he was causing.
"Why're you being such a %$!# to Kaufmo?!" Your question came out as a shout, the anger in your voice clear and unmistakeable.
Jax's smug expression flickered for a moment, seemingly surprised by the sudden outburst. For the first time, you saw something behind his eyes — a slight narrowing of his gaze, a subtle twitch of his lips...
"You should be thankful that it's not you." His words were like a dagger to your heart, leaving you feeling a mix of confusion and anger. He was implying that you should be grateful to not be the target of his cruel behavior, that you should accept the fact that he would continue to torment Kaufmo with impunity. You couldn't believe that he could be so heartless, so lacking in empathy.
"It's your fault that I'm feeling the need to blow off steam in the first place." He added to his previous statement, holding a hand up to where his heart would be.
You wanted to lash out, to scream at him, to make him understand how cruel and unkind his words and actions were.
But you couldn't bring yourself to, and you didn't know why.
You've stopped counting the days after that, stopped marking their progression.
Life in the circus has turned into a blurry, endless cycle of days, each one a mirror of the one before it. Each day brings it's own frustrations and triumphs, it's own joy and sorrow, but somehow, they all seem to blend together, creating a seemingly endless loop of monotony.
Avoiding Jax became routine, too.
It was like a second nature, almost instinctual at this point. You've developed a sixth sense for detecting his presence, his footsteps, his voice. You instinctively knew what areas he frequented and which ones he avoided, which paths he took and which ones he left alone.
And yet, no matter how hard you tried, you couldn't seem to escape his shadow, his presence weighing on you like a dark cloud.
You found yourself shying away from the rest of the cast, reluctant to engage in their shenanigans for fear of Jax's wrath. The last time you tried to participate, you remembered the way Jax had stepped in, his words cutting like a razor, his gaze cold but tone cheerful.
"You don't get to talk to them."
You didn't know if his words were directed to you, or the other members.
You had given up trying to make connections with anyone else, feeling like as long as Jax was around, you would never be a part of the group. The isolation was starting to take a toll on you, leaving you feeling increasingly alone and disconnected from those around you.
The loneliness was almost too much to bear, your heart aching with a deep, desolate sadness. You had no one to turn to, no one to confide in, no one to comfort you when things felt overwhelming. It felt like you were adrift in an endless sea of isolation, with no land in sight, no one there to help when you struggled.
Despite the pain and suffering that Jax had inflicted upon you, you found yourself longing for his company, the loneliness and isolation of your existence weighing heavy on your shoulders.
You were tired of being alone, of always being in your own box with nobody to talk to.
You stood there in the dim hall, your heart racing with anticipation. The night was quiet, and the only sounds were your heavy breathing and the soft rustle of your clothing as you shifted your weight.
For a long moment, you just stood there, mustering up the courage to knock. Finally, you raised your fist and rapped gently on the door.
The silence stretched out, each passing moment feeling like an eternity. And then, ever so slowly, the door creaked open. Jax stood there, his eyes piercing, his lips curled into a smile.
"Well if it isn't my favorite box-hiding member!" He exclaimed with a cheeky grin. "What brings ya here?"
"I...I just wanted to talk," you finally said, your voice trembling.
Jax's grin only grew wider. "Talk?" he repeated, a hint of amusement in his voice.
You could feel the tears welling up in your eyes as you took a step closer to him. "Please," you pleaded, "I just miss you, that's all. I miss having someone to talk to."
He had you right where he wanted.

Already touched on this scene regarding the differences to the brothers, so I'm not going to repeat myself too much here, but I am thinking about the like... Purpose of this scene from a narrative/characterization standpoint in line with that. Because like, think about it... This scene would hit so different, as a debate, if we didn't know how far along Claudia and co. were in their quest to free Aaravos; then we could lean one way or another operating with the exact same information the characters have.
But we the audience Know that Aaravos isn't out, which is the primary reason Callum gives regarding incentive to get the Nova Blade. Nor is this the first time that Callum has a perspective we know isn't necessarily, well, necessary because we know more than the characters do. So we're already inclined to be more on Ezran's side because we know his line of thinking - that Aaravos isn't out and it's worth trying to just stop his release - is worth following.
It is likewise worth noting though, that Callum thinks the Novablade plan is good whether Aaravos is out or not. While he brings up that Claudia and Viren might've already released the Startouch elf, when Callum initially proposes the plan (shown above) he says, "Then we wait for Aaravos to get out." Even though if Aaravos gets out, that would kind of put him in the best possible place to possess Callum again, given how it operated last time. Even though if Aaravos gets out, he'll be even more powerful and likely to do real harm and even harder to defeat.
All of which to say this scene has approximately three purposes
To reinforce the differences between the brothers and possible seeds of conflict for the future, in both Ezran's pacifism (possibly to set up contrast with his latter choices) as well as Callum's more pragmatic side
To reinforce, by giving Rayla the deciding vote and having her side with Ezran, that Callum's morality and inclinations is different than both his brother and his partner
And on that note, characterization wise, to start highlighting what Callum is willing to do and that he's always had this streak in him (cue both he and Viren watching dark magic corrupted enemies die by their own hand at the Storm Spire while Ezran and Harrow feel somewhat conflicted about it, at least) / can often be more solution oriented ("How does this solve anything?" from 1x02) and willing to take the path he perceives as easier/more efficient
Tumblr media
Sarai: You said you want to make a difference, to build a better world. But that's going to take decades of hard work. There's no monster you can slay to solve all of your problems. There's no shortcut.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some other interesting notes:
Shows the different in the trio's dynamic regarding decision making, since previously it had normally been Callum and Rayla having the final call with Ezran going along with it (2x03, 3x08). Now, the brothers discuss first with each other, highlighting that they've spent the last two years without her and that Ezran has become more assertive, but that they still fully include her in the decision and have it be one they made as a group, signifying their heightened unity upon reunion and healing, and the way they all trust/look to each other.
It also demonstrates growth from Rayla, as last time she thought there was a potential threat to the world, she went the more violent route in wanting to track Viren down (alone) and kill him. But now that she's come back and reintegrated herself into the group, she's taking the more level headed, preventative route in some ways.

Meryl, Luida, and Bridging the Gap
This is just a quick little side-note I wanted to make about the similarities between Meryl and Luida that I noticed as I was reading, and how they end up occupying similar, yet complementing roles in the story.
***Disclaimer: I was sick when I wrote this and my head is full of fog lmao. If I have completely left out a word or something... don't even worry about it it's fine.
First off, on a surface level, they both are characterized as capable, intelligent, level-headed women, who are suddenly thrust into leadership positions, with Meryl being assigned the task of tracking down and mitigating the damage caused by Vash the Stampede plus looking out for her new protégé, Milly, and Luida stepping up to take charge of Ship 3 and its residents after Doc's death.
While the demand placed on them both is immense, nonetheless, they are shown to be quite capable of shouldering this kind of responsibility - however, given their intense focus and objective-driven personalities, they actually both get scenes where they are somewhat horrified by their own temporary prioritization of objectives over morality. We see this with Meryl in Trigun Volume 1 when she doesn't react in righteous anger to Badwick threatening his parents and had shut herself off from writing to her own in pursuit of her job, and with Luida when she briefly considers the idea of another July incident to stop Knives. Both think negatively of themselves for this - of course, I'm of the mind that since they are upset with themselves on reflection, this proves the exact opposite, really. I think they both have hearts of gold, they're just under a lot of stress, especially as time goes on. The two of them are human beings who falter, but whose morals ultimately align closely with what Vash wants to see in the world. Really, what the two of them hate most here is the idea of their own inaction or taking the easy way in the face of wrongdoing - a concept that drives them into action going forward.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: Two images from Trigun and Trigun Maximum. The first is from Trigun Volume 1. Over images of trees and Badwick's father, Meryl says "But I... I just stood there and took it all in without even budging. I am such a cold person. I chose this path of blood and tears without thinking about the rest of my life. All I can see is what's right in front of me." Meryl starts to cry as she continues, "Why could I not see... that when I closed myself off to him, something was wrong? I..." She then slaps her cheeks and says "No... never mind!" The second image is from Trigun Maximum Volume 8. A single tear runs down Luida's cheek. Meryl says "Miss Luida...?" Her back turned to Meryl, Luida says "I'm sorry. I... was thinking for a moment. If something like July would happen again... it could stop Knives, but... ... I'm a terrible woman. End ID.]
Both of them also have a connection to Vash's past that gives them a different perspective on him as a person, instead of just an ally - Meryl, of course, gets brain-blasted in Volume 5 with Vash's memories (poor thing), but Luida is also more familiar with him than even a lot of the people on Ship 3, it seems - enough that she calls him out for blaming himself after the attack, clearly used to hearing this from him. She also is the one to clear up at least some of Wolfwood's confusion and uncertainty.
Tumblr media
We also get this interesting parallel of them both watching Vash walk away to face Knives, him having rejected their offers of help. It's something that clearly saddens them both, as they watch him fight alone again and again, and wish he wouldn't. Both of them have moments where they feel they can't offer much in the way of assistance, or that their best efforts aren't enough.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: Two images from Trigun and Trigun Maximum. The first is from Trigun Volume 2. Vash, his back turned, runs off into the chaos, a Plant seen above him and the city ahead, as he yells back "Get as far away from here as you can! Get to safety!" Meryl watches him from the door. In the second image, from Trigun Maximum Volume 8, a grainy flashback shows Vash's turned back as he walks away from a young Luida, who is reaching out to him. End ID.]
Of course, we the readers know this isn't true at all! Meryl and Luida do so much over the course of the story.
Interestingly, they don't start off as the ones completely in charge - Meryl works for Bernadelli even if she is in charge of her assignment, and Luida is presumably part of the Council, but the one in charge is initially Doc. But once they do take over - Luida after Doc's death, and Meryl once the world is thrown into ruins and Bernadelli no longer exists - there is a striking difference in the way they act from their predecessors.
Meryl goes from simply following Vash around to taking a self-directed and active role in assisting him however she can - looking for his old belongings and anything else of potential use, asking Marlon to repair his gun, creating a distraction with Milly, and helping the Earth Federation in the final hour with no hesitation.
Luida takes a much more active role in rallying Ship 3 to assist Vash as well. While some of this may simply have been because the stakes were raised much higher after Volume 3, Ship 3, while already a base of support for Vash, was a distant safe haven, kept largely separate from the rest of the world. Up until that point, they had provided Vash with aid, but not fought alongside him, something that clearly bothers Luida on multiple occasions. She decides to change this. She's the one who sets out to help as many of the towns ravaged by the Ark as possible. She rallies the Ship 3 residents for a rescue mission to help Vash. She's the one to step forward and attempt to bring all the leaders around to standing with Vash.
Which brings me to my last comparison point. They're both staunchly supportive of Vash, quick to come to his aid, and quick to defend his character from those who doubt his intent - Luida even sharply calls out her own people for their moment of mistrust after hearing about July. These two know and care about Vash on a more personal level than most - and as we all know, due to his avoidant tendencies, this is not an easy thing to do. Vash is frequently misinterpreted, and these two are often the ones to set the record straight.
Tumblr media
[ID: A panel from Trigun Maximum Volume 3. Luida, sternly, says "That's a foolish question. You would know the answer just by looking at the scars on his body. If he had used his true immortality, those scars would not be there. End ID.]
In this way, much like Vash is a bridge between humans and Plants, Meryl and Luida are something of a bridge between humans and Vash.
And they're able to do this because deep down, their ideals align closely with his - they're not just supporting someone they care about; they have a similar desire to see the kind of world he fights for, and they choose to fight for it too.
But while Luida is something of a spokesperson for Vash, reaching out to humanity, it is almost as if Meryl becomes the voice of humanity reaching back, responding to him, and agreeing that not everything in the world is awful; that it is worth believing in the best in others. They need to stand together.
Tumblr media
[ID: A panel from Trigun Maximum Volume 14. Meryl, in a spacesuit, with frank determination, says, "Because we decided to stand together. We stand with Vash the Stampede." End ID.]
Meryl is the voice of proof that some people believe in the love and peace he speaks of, and are willing to say it back to him in turn.

I have two sins that somwhat cohenside:
As a Cole stan for life I despise the Cole is gay HC and have had to abandon the tag because of its prevalence. Lavashipping is a NOTP and of all the art and edits I've seen polluting my Cole tag I still cant see any chemistry or dynamic between them besides they are both attractive. All the ninja ships are incest vibes (not just the gay ones. Looking at you Braincellshipping) to me as they treat eachother and call eachother brothers but at least there was tension and chemistry between the old days of Bruiseshipping. Lava's prevalence online had me quit for a long time as I couldnt understand why it randomly gained such traction and then showrunners made the dumb idea to try and bait fan perceptions in crystalized. I see cole as somewhat aromantic (although the term is mostly meaningless and used to describe anyone who is uncmfortable or disinterested with romance without analysing the deeper psychological reasons that might be the case) but he obviously wants to be a father and I don't see how any of his defined traits attribute to being the fans gay stand in besides the fact that fandom always has the urge to pick one to be the LGBT mascot and create content that isnt there simply for their own self indulgence. I like Coliel (if anyone remembers Seliel) as it leans into Coles obliviousness to advances while it shows off his honorable and protective personality. I don't find Cole particularly coded LGBT in any of the seasons up until Dragons rising, which the episode focussing it was badly written and OOC.
My other "sin" I suppose is I disown ALL of DR for being a horrible soft reboot that does everything a soft reboot shouldn't: messing with preestablished lore in an attempt to prop up these random new characters as just, if not more, powerful than our protagonists. The new writer has a horrible track record with character ensemble shows like TMNT 2012 and its a worthless slap in the face continuation of an ended series. The diologue is horrendously tacky and most jokes dont land. The push by the writers to add in fan characterizations and expand the lore beyond whats established is lazy and uninspired. There is so much left to explore in Ninjago the way it was. We never went to most of the continent but why try to write compelling stories and dramas with an already defined map when you could throw everything out the window and make your own sandbox, shoehorning it into Ninjago regardless on how ridiculous it looks and feels.
*exhale* alright. I lot to get through here.
there is nothing wrong with not HCing cole gay, especially if you seem him on the aro/ace spectrum. I'm in the exact same boat. And just because there are very prevalent gay interpretations of the text does not mean you have to adopt them, or watch them with that subtext in mind. The true potential episode can obviously really easily be read as a coming out allegory, and a lot of people have latched onto that. And good for them!
But it's just as easily read as a story about defying your parent's expectations for a career path- especially if that's something you can relate to. I think the episode works even better in that respect (cuz that's kinda more directly what it's about, but also) because it adds in this layer of also respecting the place where your parents came from and make their living with. Honestly, I didn't see any gay coding on my first watch through of that one dragons rising episode. I saw Cole's relationship with Geo as much more of a mentor/mentee thing, probably because he's typically taken on a father role. I thought Geo and Sora had more chemistry honestly, with that one scene where their bonding over rejection. That's the beauty of media, multiple interpretations! It sounds like you're letting the fandom color your viewing experience, and that's your problem. The crystalized kai/cole stuff can just as easily be read as brother shenanigans. Don't let fanon make things canon for you if you don't want them to.
I'm on the same page of not shipping the core 4 together. The early seasons were directly focused on their brotherhood in my view, so I get it. But, let's not begrudge people their imaginary LGBTQ rep. As far as I understand lavashipping took off cuz it's the only gay pairing of the main characters who could still potentially be canonically shipped together. Jaya and pixane are pretty set in stone, and lloyd is pretty much off limits. But kailor is very iffy in canon, and cole has never had a love interest. And even if I don't ship it, I can see the value of people having some level of hope that the show might give them some rep. But again, none of this means you have to ship it or feel bad for not shipping it.
Second, you've got some unique opinions on dragons rising. Cool. I don't think you're completely invalid or anything, but I do think some of these opinions might be a little biased?
You're mad it brought back the... finished tv show? The show that finished with crystalized? The worst possible ending of the show? Honestly, it wasn't that much more conclusive than other seasons. Ninjago has always struck me as an evergreen property- a world with endless adventures in it. To begrudge future stories for existing seems a little selfish to me. Ninjago should be a property that new kids can get into for years to come. I've got some problems with what dragons rising has done. I don't think the merge was the best way to go. I hate how needlessly small it makes everything feel. I think sora is a little too chosen-one-y. There are things to criticize here. But it's pulling a lot off. I think it's balanced screen time between old characters and new characters pretty well. It's established a fairly unique identity for itself, which can be a real struggle for sequel content. Again, I think you're coming into it with a distorted fandom lens which is making you hate it more. Not to say that you're wrong, but you're feelings associated with your opinions may be a little exaggerated.
if you have a sin you would like to confess, please direct it to @ninjago-sins

TwiFicmas23 Day 9: to ground (jasper/archie)
Tumblr media
Good evening! An early post tonight because I am fueled by chocolate frogs, the potential for some amateur surgery tonight (doctor approved, it's fine), and the promise that the holiday season is nearly upon us and I'll stop waking up in a terrified haze that I've forgotten to order something that Amazon doesn't stock locally.
It's been a weird day.
Tonight I bring you what at least three people have requested: an Attempt at Jasper/Archie. This was started for Pride and I've continued working on it. This is the first draft, so it'll undergo some polishing and edits before it hits AO3, not to mention a ream of author's notes for context.
This is my first time writing m/m, so I'm oddly fascinated with how this turned out. I think it's okay? I think my biggest issue is characterizing Archie right and making sure I capture what we know about him with what we know about Alice.
I probably need to do more world/lore building for the boys like I have with Jess and Alice, but c'est la vie. I tried and I hope for all the people that wanted this, you enjoy it!
going to ground. The motel is dim and smells damp, some rundown place halfway to Olympia that was never more than half full, used by truckers and seasonal workers on their way to Peninsula and back home again. The bedspreads were shiny, discoloured polyester; the smell of mould and stale air permeating every crevice.
Archie isn’t happy. But it’s easier to be pissed at the state of this motel to distract himself.
Jasper’s stripped to his waist in the bathroom, prolonging the inevitable. Hot water will alleviate the pain for a short time, but he’s damn well pushing it. He’s not even treating the wounds anymore; he’s just hiding.
It’s always been Jasper’s habit to go to ground when he’s injured. In Calgary, in New Hampshire, and now in Forks. He won’t - can’t - even be around the Cullens when he’s that physically vulnerable. Archie always privately wondered if Jasper brought him alone so that someone had his back, or if he knew Archie would follow him to the ends of the Earth no matter what, or maybe so that he knew that Archie was protected.
His boy was wretchedly overprotective.
Which was, frankly, the reason that they were in this mess in the first place.
Scowling, Archie nudged the bed ruffle with his toe and nodded to himself when it crinkled like plastic. This place really was a dump. Normally, Jasper would take them out in the middle of the forest somewhere, carefully chosen for their inability to be tracked. After Calgary, it had taken Archie weeks to convince Jasper to go home, that it was safe. That they were safe, Maria was gone, and the Cullens were their family - they were no danger to them, they weren’t angry or upset with them for what Maria did (though Esme had been nigh hysterical at their sudden disappearance) - and they needed to go back.
New Hampshire had been somewhat easier; it had only taken a week to get Jasper home, and that hadn’t been an emotionally loaded incident, just some territorial nomads.
And now Forks.
Jasper had driven them here, and it was an unexpected that he hadn’t simply insisted on plunging into the Olympic National Park for days on end. But maybe that was more strategy - the woods were the first place the Cullens would look. A shitty motel halfway to Olympia wouldn’t be a place anyone would come looking for them for days - especially with both Bella and Jacob wounded.
Archie scowls again, and decided he’s been patient enough. He’s not one to sulk over big things - he wants the air cleared and everything resolved. But Jasper hates arguing so much that he’ll cloister himself rather than face Archie. It doesn’t matter where, as long as he can hide - in his study, in the garage with Rose, or - apparently - in a motel bathroom only a few steps above a truck stop.
The pain would be excruciating.
He’s been in there long enough.
“Jas.” He knocks on the door, and hears nothing besides the running tap. He waits a beat before he tries the knob - surprisingly, it’s unlocked and Archie wonders if he missed Jasper unlatching it, or if he just assumed it was locked.
Jasper’s slumped against the wall, his eyes pitch-black. There’s something about them that when they’re thirsty; vampires look gaunt and slightly grey-er than usual. A little closer to dead. Probably not noticeable to humans but to him, who looks at Jasper every single day, he looks miserable.
Archie moves closer, crouching down. Jasper’s eyes are tracking him, but he says nothing.
“Show me,” Archie says gently, but Jasper’s eyes have dropped to Archie’s right arm, covered by his sweatshirt.
“Jasper, you need to let me help you.” He can smell the venom - mostly Jasper’s, but there’s a sharp, foreign note that makes Archie worry. The scent is strong enough that the wound is still open, and it’s been hours. “Please.”
“Let me see it,” Jasper says hoarsely; speaking sounds painful. He needs to hunt, on top of everything, and he can’t. Not yet. Not til they take care of this.
“You first,” Archie replies firmly, but Jasper doesn’t move, his eyes fixed on Archie’s arm.
Sighing, Archie shoves the sleeve of his sweatshirt up; there’s an old ace bandage wrapped around it whilst the skin repaired. But after he removes it, the wound is obvious - the angry purpling of the bite has faded, now that it has been cleaned of foreign venom, it’s only slightly darker and will fade completely in a few hours, especially if Archie goes hunting. It’s a shallow wound, will barely scar. Frankly, Jasper’s given him more impressive marks in bed.
But Jasper doesn’t even stop the horror from rolling off him at the sight of it.
“Your turn,” Archie says in a voice that brooks no arguments, trying to squash the irritation down. It’s been a long time since Jasper’s been this… shaken up over anything, and it’s easier to pretend that it’s him being dramatic over Archie’s bite mark right now.
Jasper nods, and gets on his knees to lean forward.
It looks exactly like Archie’s visions showed him. Worse, actually, because this is real life.
The fissure runs down his back, parallel to his spine, from where his neck and shoulder meet, to his waist. The flesh has split like a geode, and Archie can see all the petrified fat and muscle right down to the bone, with an eerie golden sheen over it all. The edges are purple-black from the foreign venom, almost blistered. In contrast, the bite mark on the back of his neck looks benign, even though it should scare him more.
The whole thing makes him feel sick and frankly, Archie doesn’t feel even a tiny bit capable of dealing with this. He would give anything to have Rose or Carlisle here to patch Jasper up, whilst he flirted and made jokes to distract him.
But Jasper wouldn’t trust them. He might respect Carlisle, and love Rose, but when it comes down to the meat of it, he doesn’t trust them like he trusts Archie.
“Don’t be mad,” Jasper says in that same hoarse, flat voice. “Please don’t be mad.”
“I’m not mad,” Archie replies, and it’s not totally a lie. He’s panicking internally, he’s still annoyed and frustrated, but he’s not angry.
Jasper lets out a sound that’s somewhere between a groan and a whine, and that pushes Archie into action - Jasper’s in pain and he’s sitting here navel-gazing.
“Come and lie on the bed, and we’ll clean this up. I promise I won’t make any moves on you,” Archie tugs him to his feet, his lame attempt at a joke falling flat. Jasper limps after him, looking miserable.
The groan Jasper lets out as he lies face-down on the bed is made uglier by the way the wound pulls and shifts as he moves. Archie’s not one with a weak stomach, but knowing that mess is attached to the person he loves most in the world… it’s hard to look at.
He almost understands why Edward’s so fixated on keeping Bella safe. If Jasper were as vulnerable as Bella…
There’s no one else to help them, so it has to be Archie.
The bag from the convenience store is on the nightstand; salt, a bottle of cheap vodka, and a tube of aloe vera. It was a goddamn crude kit; Carlisle would be horrified at the use of vodka. Actually, he’d be horrified by this whole set-up. In a perfect world, they’d be back at the Cullens and Archie would be allowed to do this properly.
But they aren’t and he can’t.
Archie had honestly never asked Jasper how they discovered flammable fluids could purge out foreign venom, and he wasn’t sure he wanted to know -the vodka would draw out any venom that stuck to the open wound, since foreign venom gained a nearly honey-like stickiness to it after a short time. The inability to purge it successfully was nearly always what caused scarring. Salt worked to purge the rest of the foreign material out of it, and aloe vera kick-started their cells healing again.
It’s not human blood; human blood would do the heavy lifting if they used that, but both of them know that it’s a slippery slope, and one that is best left alone for many reasons. The least of all is the fragile alliance they’ve formed with the Pack. Archie feels like they wouldn’t take kindly to them stealing blood from the hospital, even for injury treatment, so he didn’t even suggest it.
Carlisle would adore to discuss all of this in great detail - he’s been fixated on vampire healing principles for years. Archie should suggest it to Jasper as a holiday gift for next year. Hell, one page of notes would keep Carlisle and Eleazer occupied for days.
The worst part of treating Jasper, Archie decides as he very quickly douses Jasper’s back in salt and alcohol, is the fact that Jasper stays silent. Protesting the pain, even the smallest noise, is a sign of weakness. The only indication of the agony that he’s in is the tightening of his back and arm muscles.
So Archie talks. Everything spills out, all the inane shit that goes through his head - that he’s still disappointed that Bella didn't want to go to senior prom because the dress he had in mind would have been a showstopper, and no he wasn’t going to use it for her wedding dress because that dress has been drawn and cut for a while now.
He complains about the fight, that the wolves blocked his visions and there were one or two half-visions that looked like they spelt doom but nothing came to pass so now he’s reconsidering the accuracy. Or was the fact the wolves are unknowable affecting the outcome?
He’ll have fun debating that one with Edward at some point.
Archie isn’t sure when he runs out of easy words to say, but it does happen as he watches the foreign venom burn out of the fissure, and the room is silent. The only real communication they have is Archie’s hand rubbing Jasper’s shoulder soothingly; the only form of reassurance that he can offer right now. Too many things need to be said. Even more need to not be said.
So, they sit in silence. When the wounds look clear, Archie carefully helps Jasper lie back on the bed. It’ll take a while for them to heal, and it’s draining - Jasper told him that years ago. He’ll need to hunt immediately after this. Jasper lies back with a sigh, a breath released now that the worst of the pain has been dealt with, and closes his eyes. Archie takes up his spot in the rancid-looking armchair, hugging his knees to his chest, and waits.
Jasper breaks the silence after a couple of hours.
“Do you want to talk about it?” He sounds clearer, better, and it’s a tangible relief. Archie immediately crawls onto the bed, motioning for Jasper to lean forward so he can check his back. The fissure already looks so much better; the bite too has lightened, but both are going to leave a nasty scar.
“You still need to hunt,” Archie informs him, absently pressing a kiss to Jasper’s shoulder blade before settling Jasper back against the pillows.
He’s delicious and it doesn’t matter how many years pass, Archie still gets butterflies looking at him. Shirtless and in worn out jeans really is his very best look. If this were any other moment, just a quick getaway for some privacy…
But it isn’t.
“Talk to me,” Jasper said insistently, his hand reaching up to cup Archie’s cheek. “I know you’re still mad.”
“It was a stupid fucking risk,” Archie says precisely, but without the vehemence he had earlier. “I had everything under control. One bite is not the end of the world.”
“It is to me,” Jasper said simply. “When it’s you.”
Archie closed his eyes to drag up some patience. “Jasper. One bite verses this,” he waved his hand over him. “You were mauled. It was opportunistic and you could have gotten killed.” His voice rises and he has to stop himself, keep his temper. It’s the fear of what could have happened that makes him angry, he knows that. “I have seen you get hurt so many times over the years… so many near misses, so many times you’ve been so close to not coming back, not being there, that the fact you take those risks…”
He closes his eyes for a moment to compose himself, and instinctively lies next to Jasper, curled to rest his head on Jasper’s shoulder. It brings back memories, the scent of Jasper’s skin (the same leather-sun-wood he’s known for decades, but tinged with the venom and alcohol that leaves him uneasy) not quite soothing Archie’s anxiety. He remembers the visions where Jasper was too far gone to fight but he still went into battle. How many times did he nearly lose his head, did he nearly get overrun by enemy soldiers desperate to prove themselves by bringing down the Major of Monterrey?
How many times did Archie watch everything he ever wanted fade away for a second, because Jasper took a stupid fucking risk? And he was certain those days were over so many times - when they met; Ohio in ’49; Calgary is ’76; New Hampshire in ’81, and now Forks. It just never stops; it’s always going to linger, that idea that Jasper is never going to be safe, never going to be protected.
“If you’d been able to see it, would you have stopped me?” Jasper asks softly, one arm wrapping around Archie.
“Duh.” He’s tracing the scars on Jasper’s chest now, scars he knows so well he could draw them with his eyes closed - an absent gesture that calms him. “You never would have noticed.”
“Exactly.” Jasper waits for Archie to acknowledge his point, but he doesn’t look up. “I saw what was happening and I stopped it. The same way you would have for me.”
“But you were…” Archie scrunches his eyes up and turns away. “I would have been okay. One bite is nothing compared to all of this!”
Maybe this will turn into a proper argument. They haven’t had one since Calgary. Maybe they’re due for one.
“Come back,” Jasper says, and he sounds so tired that Archie rolls back over reflexively, but sprawled half-across Jasper’s chest this time, staring up into Jasper’s black eyes.
“I’ve seen arm bites go terribly, terribly wrong,” Jasper said in that low voice that he used just for Archie’s ears; intimate and almost dark. “You’ve seen Peter’s scars; that’s one of the better outcomes from a bad bite. And there is no part of me I wouldn’t sacrifice to make sure you aren’t the one with a mutilated arm - if we managed to save your arm at all. That newborn wasn’t going to just bite you; he was prepared to take his pound of flesh, and I…
“The injuries I’ve seen on the battlefield… Arch, I know what our venom can do to vampire skin. I’ve seen it go half necrotic, I’ve seen it eat through flesh until you just have to amputate at the shoulder. Neither Maria or I ever figured out why that happened to some bites. Only that it did and there was nothing we could do. It might just be a bite, but I couldn’t risk it. I wouldn’t risk anything about you, ever.”
Archie leads out a huff of breath and Jasper chuckles, brushing his hair from his face.
“I’m not gonna lie to you, it got away from me for a moment,” Jasper continued, his hand cupping Archie’s face again. “But I knew you were there and you had my back and that everything was going to be okay as long as you were.”
“You know that it’s the same for me, right? That it’s only going to be okay for me if you are?” Archie’s contemplating kissing him right now, but not if that’s going to interrupt this talk so that they have to finish it later. “I need you to… I need you to be selfish and be safe. Every time I think it’s gonna be okay and we don’t have to worry about dying any more, something changes and I’m tired, Jas. I’m so, so tired.”
Jasper ghosts a kiss over Archie’s cheek, and it’s not enough. “I’m never going to apologise for protecting you, and I’m never going to stop making sure you’re okay,” Jasper murmured, frowning as he shifted on the bed to redistribute their weight. “But I swear I will always come back to you, okay? When it’s our time, we’ll go together.”
Archie nods, and that’s when Jasper surprises him by pulling him flush and kissing him hard. It’s the kind of kiss that is always a precursor for more, especially if Jasper’s hand on his belt is any indication of how the rest of the night is going to go.
And he’s okay with that, as long as Jasper doesn’t mess up his back any worse.
Tomorrow, he’s going to have to check in with their family, reassure them that everything is okay, and drag Jasper home and pretend they just ran off to fuck in the woods and everything is fine. There were no grievous bodily wounds tended to in a rank little highway motel, there were no meltdowns.
But right now, he’s going to take this kiss, and the next one, and just be here and now, with the battle over and won and everyone in one piece. He’s going to get his boy naked and have one of those nights they don’t get to have very often in a family of seven where they don’t have to be quiet or subtle or keep one ear out for potential interruptions.
And he’s going to turn those words over in his mind - “When it’s our time, we’ll go together” - warm and safe, until he can trust and believe that they aren’t just a promise, but their future.

An attempt at an actually good explanation of the head types
Let the takeaway be this: Curiosity, imagination & inquisitiveness is a shared characteristic between all of them.
With some 6 it gets shut down cause they get too bogged down in anxiety or superego correctness, kinda like those really numbed-out 3s sometimes, but the natural disposition is curious & imaginative as well. I mean, how would you concoct all those worst case scenarious without at least latent imagination?
Same for a tendency to want to analyze, understand and "track" what's happening, automatically looking for patterns. Also sometimes characterized as the funny triad, though, ive met some plenty funny 9s and 8s.
Another thing to note is that its not just "logic" that lives here but speculative imagination, future planning & conceptual thinking. What is logic but imagination that is disciplined by rules?
This is especially worth keeping in mind when you consider mbti combinations - ovsly Ts will be more overtly intellectual, Fs might show the imagination side more or be drawn to humanities-related concepts such as art, sociology, psychology... - though of course, both can have both. A xSFx who is a 6 will be more 'concepty' than a 9, in that sense that's a well-balanced combo.
All three tend not be noted for their perceptiveness, but immature individuals can also share the possible weakness of thinking their noggin is god's gift to mankind. (though the 6s are less obviously braggarts to avoid being targeted - more like, "people who share my politics are smart" or "its just common sense")
The fact that scary situations can stimulate planning is kind of an interesting hint at how the capacity for imagination evolved. With all 3 you can see a tendency to 'speed up' if something unforeseen happens that distinguishes them from the other triads, though it shows somewhat differently in each of them.
Now I have no clue about this at all as I don't really pick up on that sort of thing, but another commonality you sometimes hear mentioned which sounds kinda fascinating is a tendency for the eyes sometimes not quite match the rest of the expression or a lot of the expressiveness being in the eyes generally. Like someone acting aggro or cheery but you can tell from the eyes they're inwardly freaked out, or that's how I've heard it described.
So, now that we've established the commonalities and that no single one of them is "the" learning interested type, how do you nail which one you are? For this, it pays to keep in mind both the specific thinking style as well as the temperament that typically goes with it.
Soo... what kind of information can't you get enough of?
7 - the latest new stuff that is full of cool, exciting possibilities. Novelty, technological innovation, avantgardistic art & fashion, anything exciting adventurous & cool, working on a new project or skill every couple of months. Often very good at quick thinking, improvising, and talking people into almost anything. - this is most often an extrovert and usually an active, optimistic, confident, fun-loving and dynamic but not always all that reliable or responsible person. ~ sort of like an inventor or explorer who sees the potential in things. As a thinking style, it's the most associative & open ended, considering how all the multiple frameworks available could be used to solve your problem. Quick at concocting new plans on the spot. Like a mind map or web of loosely connected concepts. Focussed on securing good outcomes, can get anxious that they're not gonna get those good things. Tends to assume they're going to win, sometimes to the point of overconfidence or denial. Tends to discard ideas that are no longer useful or entertaining them & look for ever newer & better ones.
6 - keeping up with politics & important happenings, what is going on with the people in your circle, not missing any potential dangers or important developments, tests & questions everything not easily fooled by scams, looks for the truth behind everything & its trustwortiness - most often introvert but still somewhat sociable, but extrovert is possible - character wise, can be sceptical, argumentative, and a big worrier but also likeable, perseverant, funny, brave, and good team players. - a bit like a detective or journalist, looking for truths. As a thinking style, it's systematic and context-sensitive. Information is related to relationships, morals, political contexts, power dynamics etc. and categorizing things - but not in a simplistic way, but with awareness of how categories can intersect or contradict each other. Like building a map or grid. Focussed on preventing bad outcomes, can get anxious about those bad things happening. Tends to expect a struggle, sometimes to the point of overpreparation or combativeness. Tends to be concerned with whether to adopt or resist ideas, which should be adopted & which resisted, which are "correct" or "certain".
5 - indiscriminately retains all manner of unrelated random stuff just because, for its own sake. Will obsess endlessly over and absorb every last detail about anything that personally interests them even if its something totally obscure, completely theoretical, gross/disturbing, esoteric or of no practical use. Usually very strongly introverted. Blunt, cynical, eccentric and rather sensitive in disposition, but since they're so reclusive they can tend to be known only as "that weirdo who only talks about [current obsession]" - like a collector or philosopher. As a thinking style, its about looking for contrasts, underlying principles, and to try to look at things from as much of an unbiased perspective as possible. Like a decision tree or filing cabinet. Doesn't tie themselves to particular outcomes but rather to anticipate what's going to happen & how to navigate it. Can get anxious that they can't deal with what's coming. Tends to have low expectations, sometimes to the point of being defeatist or doomerism. Rather than rely on outside ideas, try to synthesize their own version, phrasing everything in their own words.
Addendum: I find a lot of confusions come from shared traits in triads being more emphasized in some of the typical descriptions - that's how you get 9s and 5s landing on 4, 6s landing on other reactives, and 6 and 7 landing on 5.
Doesn't help that there's been this shift in the later authos to discuss mostly the temperament for 7 and 6, but you gotta dig out palmer, maitri or naranjo to learn what that actually makes them mental types, whereas with 5, the nerd stuff stayed but all the specifity was lost in regards temperament - The defeatism angle alone would sort out all the mistyped 6s and 3s real quick if it was more emphasized.
Maybe this is in part cause 6 and 7 have roughly even F/T ratio whereas 5 somewhat skews toward T, though by far not as much as 8 or 1, or as much as 4 and 2 do the reverse.

well here is the soup. it might be bad i haven’t tasted it and i think the carrots and peas are all mushy and the only person who’s tried it is my friend who doesn’t know what soup is. it probably needs lots of salt but i’m too tired to do that. i honestly don’t really like it because i cannot decide on time’s characterization for the life of me so please ignore how ooc it is. no spice because ace
Time sat up and leaned against the headboard, Four sprawled on the blankets beneath him.
“Sit up,” he commanded, the smaller man quickly scrambling to sit next to Time. “You know what I think, Four?”
Questioning eyes looked up at him. “No, what?”
“I think that you’re used to doing things very differently than I do.”
Four chewed his lip, thinking. “I- I’m sorry. I can go,” he replied after a moment, making to get up from the bed.
“No, wait a minute,” Time objected, grabbing Four’s wrist and pulling him back down. “You’re no burden to me.”
“I guess I just…don’t know how,” Four decided after a minute.
“And that’s perfectly fine,” Time assured. “But I have to ask, Four- do you really want this?”
His words hung in the air as Four thought. “Yeah, I do,” he settled on. “A long time ago I was constantly in denial, and I just kept…throwing myself at people, persay. Trying to convince myself that I was at least somewhat normal. Somehow I got into the idea that I didn’t need another thing about me that was different.”
Time hummed. “I have to say I don’t know much about asexuality, but I can understand how you would feel that, and I’m sorry society puts pressure on us to be a certain way,” he thought aloud, choosing his words carefully.
Four gave him a soft smile. “And, well, then I met Shadow.”
There it is, Time thought.
“Sometimes I think he can read my mind. And I guess that’s why I can’t really do this- I’m so used to him being able to tell exactly what I need, and being able to tell exactly what he needs. He’s, well, probably the only person who actually understood,” Four admitted. “I’m not sure why I came here anymore. I mean, sure, I enjoy the sex, but I think it’s more to try something new,” he added, blushing.
Time pondered this for a moment, taking in Four’s words. Four was much different than anyone else he had ever been with, what with not responding to anything he tried. aperhaps the solution was to let Four choose what he wanted.
“I think I started this off the wrong way, Four, and I apologise for that. I think that you’re used to being less involved and having more autonomy than I’m used to giving. I don’t want to cross any lines, so I’d like to ask- what would you like to do?” Time settled on, trying not to come across too harshly.
Four frowned at the sudden question. “I…uh…I’m not sure.”
“Well, if we start with boundaries, I think there’ll be quite a bit to rule out,” Time suggested.
He let Four think for a minute, waiting quietly until Four spoke up. “I don’t really like being touched without warning. Like, it’s okay in general, but not if I didn’t know it was coming. But it’s fine if I initiate or if you tell me first.” Time nodded. He had been expecting that one. “Anything else?”
“Well, it’s a bit weird, since it’s kind of the point, but…” Four started, hesitating.
“Go on,” Time prompted.
“I’d like to stay in the normal…headspace?” He wondered aloud. “Not losing track of where I am- staying in control without actually being in control, if you will.”
“I think that eliminates quite a lot,” Time replied. “I have an idea on what to try,” he decided as Four’s eyes widened. “Well,” he continued, “There is one more thing.”
Four looked up at him, one eyebrow raised, asking a silent question.
“You need to communicate, Four,” Time told him. “I know you’re used to your partner just knowing, but I don’t automatically know how you feel. You’ve got to do some of the work.”
Four’s eyes dropped. “Sorry,” he whispered.
Time shook his head. “You’re doing fine,” he reassured. “Now- would you like to try again?”
^literally the best fade to black i could manage i was stuck on this for so long. oh well maybe i’ll rewrite it in the morning. i see what you mean about it getting angsty like this really just turned into me projecting onto four halfway through.
-secret third thing anon
WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? THIS SOUP IS THE BEST SOUP!!!!! The carrots are crisp and the peas are bursting with flavor and it has the tastiest broth I’ve ever had! It is perfectly seasoned and the aroma has made my house cozy and warm ❤️ It has delivered upon me all the essential vitamins and minerals required for living and I am so healthy now my back doesn’t hurt and I can do several push ups!!!
Real talk tho this is such a good fic! All the details and way you describe their situation is so accurate. Four describing the dichotomy of wanting to be less involved but also keep all his control is something I’ve very much experienced and its really difficult to get across because it seems contradictory. And Time is soooooo good here idk what you’re talking about! He was perfect - attentive and patient. Also him gently guiding Four into using his words was so sweet!
This is so good secret third thing! Thank you for writing this! You have no idea how excited i was to get this in my inbox! You are always welcome in my inbox!

Hi! I'm curious, what are your top ten manga and anime?(different for each category) and your top ten animanga characters? Also, I love your meta! I'm always ready to see your thoughts about the itadori family. It's fun to speculate. I really hope that kenjaku has some affection toward jin. I want a dramatic, horrifying and tragic story for them.
Oh that's a tough one... for manga I actually have a somewhat ordered list, but for anime and characters it depends heavily on my mood and current fixation. Mind you, this is entirely about how much I enjoy a series or character, not so much how well written I think they are, although that factors into it too of course.
Manga:
Monster
Jujutsu Kaisen
Blood on the Tracks
Dorohedoro
Innocent & Innocent Rouge
Hunter x Hunter
Devilman (counting the entire franchise revolving around Akira & Satan's relationship)
The Promised Neverland
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (so far P7 is my favourite, but P9 looks also really good)
Pluto (very excited for the upcoming anime, had almost given up hope it would ever come out)
Anime (more a list than a ranking):
Monster
Devilman Crybaby (I don't like how Ryou is characterized here, but the anime is still phenomenal. I knew what was gonna happen and it still hit me like a truck and that OST...)
Hunter x Hunter (2011)
Hellsing Ultimate
Gundam The Origin & the original Mobile Suit Gundam series
Evangelion movies (1.0 etc., haven't watched the 4th one yet)
Princess Mononoke
Black Lagoon
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (out of P1-6 I actually enjoy P2 the most, mainly because I love the Pillar Men)
ODDTAXI
Characters (god that's difficult...):
Kenjaku (duh, getting the obvious one out of the way)
Itadori Yuuji
Johan Liebert
Kars (never did anything wrong, he just wanted for his family to be able to walk in the sun. another mad scientist who fails at raising his kids. also I'm so glad the Jorge Joestar novel exists, it makes the p2 ending less bleak and the way his character gets explored there is *chefskiss*. as you can see, I'm very normal about him and the Pillar Men)
Thief King Bakura (I'll never forgive YGO for making him out to be wrong for wanting revenge against the Pharaoh's family, who carved everyone he cared about into magical items to increase their power. the manga still handled it best tho)
Asuka Ryou (God cursed him so hard for being gay and a climate activist that even in the fun cutesy Devilman chibi series he ends up killing Akira. I hope there will be another installment in the franchise where him and Akira actually manage to kill God and break the vicious circle)
Osabe Seiko (Blood on the Tracks)
Risu (Dorohedoro, sweet cactus boy)
Marie-Joseph Sanson (Innocent Rouge, said "kill the rich" and kept her word)
Orochimaru

Act I, Track 13 - The Palace Ball
Song links: Spotify - YT Music - Apple - Tidal
This is going to be a longer post. The Palace Ball, one of the two songs in BA that were composed by Linnéa Vikström, is one of the most musical-like tracks with the most storytelling and characterization. It is full of changes of pace and mood and has a lot of dialogue and... subtext!
Tumblr media
Linnéa Vikström photographed by Tim Tronckoe
As the title indicates, this song is about a ball in the palace that Seth, as president and emperor, now inhabits. "Lots of stylish guests are strolling around", the scene description states. "Murmurs and toasting can be heard." An opulent scene. A choir sings:
[Guests:] Light of moon is falling through the evening curtains Glittering when finding jewels, gold and all Strolling in excesses, fancy suits and dresses Raising our glasses to the palace ball
"Elegantly dressed, Helena and Johanna enter the newly appointed Emperor's residence."
[Helena:] Follow me, Johanna Join me in a toast [Johanna:] Not so fast, Helena Where is our host? [Helena:] Over there, I see him Elegance and pride [Johanna:] Let us go to greet him Look into his eyes
Helena, as before, admires Seth. Johanna is suspicious. Given that she is on the lookout for signs of the Antichrist's appearance, that she witnessed Seth's outburst in a church a while earlier and given his sudden rise to fame and power, one can only imagine what she thinks of him at this point. After all, in the Biblical Book of Relevation, the Antichrist rules the world for a while during the End Times...
They walk over to Seth. As guests of honour, they are greeted warmly, although the music sounds tense. Helena probably really wants Seth and Johanna to get along, plus Johanna has considerable influence in the Vatican, so her impression of him is important.
[Seth:] Enchanting, yes it is to meet Madame again Allow me now to kiss your tender little hand [Helena:] Such an honor, Caesar, to kneel here at your feet Next to me, my sister, I wish for you to meet [Seth:] This must be Johanna Your eyes do mine entrance May I have the pleasure to offer you a dance?
This may just be my impression, but Seth comes across as somewhat awkward in this exchange. Would you say "tender little hand" to a woman you (officially) barely know..? And he "offers" Johanna a dance, as if he's doing her a favour..? Seth has come to fame very quickly. He used to be an isolated mystic, probably regarded as a bit of a weirdo. Whether this is intentional on the side of the authors or not - he is trying to be charming, but it seems he doesn't quite get the hang of it so far.
The scene description states that Helena willingly offers her hand to be kissed while Johanna is reluctant. Seth "gets an irresistible impulse" to dance the first dance of the night with Johanna, who hesitates, being "a bit jumpy and resolute". Helena is quite socially fluent, but Johanna, much like Seth, is not at home in this kind of situation. She does agree in the end though and the two dance. The conversation, of course, quickly leaves behind the usual pleasantries.
[Seth:] Like wings you cross the air of our tune As night birds do when tides obey the moon [Johanna:] Deeper is your soul than a waterfall Drowning in your memory of God [Seth:] To dance among the somber shadows Pain shall be the drying sun of every rain [Johanna:] What have you to show? Powers from below Powers that are dangling from a string
The scene description states that Seth is "trying to establish deep contact" with Johanna but that she "rebuffs him politely". I don't know if this really matches the lyrics. Johanna is quite direct and reads him accurately - she sees his past as a Christian mystic in him somehow, but also outright states that his powers are coming from hell. She warns that he can easily lose what he has.
Seth does not agree with her dualistic thinking, he remarks rather light-heartedly (listen to the vocal melody here) that:
[Seth:] Light and darkness are the chords we play Two melodies will find a common way [Johanna:] Listen I will not to this evil plot, Caesar So I thank you for this dance
To Johanna this way of thinking is clearly evil. Seeing light and dark, good and evil, merely as aesthetic choices, as opposites to be reconciled, goes against all her convictions. She says so and leaves. Even though he does not express this in words, Seth is, according to the scene description, quite discouraged to have been rejected and criticized so clearly. He walks onto a balcony while the guests continue their celebration.
[Guests:] Light of moon is falling through the evening curtains Glittering when finding jewels, gold and all The silence is unbroken, a million words unspoken By sleeping ghosts awoken at the palace ball

hania frustrates me in the sense that she chooses interesting characters on their face but the dramas never really live up to the hype themselves and her characterization feels like it loses substance at some point, so i can never feel completely satisfied. like anaa and ishqiya are dramas that i overall did not enjoy watching at all (esp the latter.. even before the abuse reveal i really have never cared for feroze as an actor and found him to be uncomfortably aggressive in a lot of his roles) and they were way too long for my liking but i did think dania and rumi were somewhat interesting. dania choosing to get away completely from the abusive and reductive environment of the haveli to live with her father and pursue studies felt like a good conclusion, but at the same time the buildup to that conclusion wasn’t all that compelling (in all fairness though it’s hard to be compelling alongside shehzad as an actor 💀). and with rumi i do think leaving hamza is something that made sense, bc regardless of however remorseful he was now he had willingly kept from her how extensively he had terrorized hamna previously and how he had only married rumi to continue that reign of terror, even if the circumstances changed along the way. but the ending also felt so abrupt and sudden and never really gave much closure so i couldn’t be entirely satisfied with it either even if i did want rumi to be free
and that’s more or less where i’m at with mujhe pyaar hua tha. awful, awful drama that seems intent to repeatedly brutalize hania’s character for being a victim to other people’s forced choices on her person so audiences can villainize her for not being perfect or loving back the “good” guy. and i have a feeling given hania’s track record (well. with the exception of mere humsafar but that was a train wreck of colossal proportions) that she will end this drama ending up single as well and it will be the conclusion she deserves after all of the abuse. but it won’t feel well earned bc she’ll never really demonstrate a capacity to stand up for herself until only the very last moment. she has a lot of talent as an actress but she never seems to capitalize on it well it’s really a shame :/
Rumi was the one character of Hania that really got her mainstream wali success. it helped her as an actor as well because Rumi closely resembles to how Hania is irl. i mean the mannerisms and all. i don't think any other character of Hania has gotten such success? in terms of success, after Ishqiya it was Mere Humsafar that was a huge hit and Hala was anything but a character with any power or agency. Anaa is remembered more for the Izza Altamash story. and MPHT has fully been a Wahaj show from the start even though the drama has crashed and burned by now.
Hania is not a bad actor. ever since Janaan her potential and especially her strong screen presence has been very evident. but I really don't understand, based on the projects she has done, what is so unique about Hania except her conventionally pretty looks and that dimpled smile? i haven't seen her bring in anything extra to her characters that cannot be credited to her good looks?? and I am talking about projects where the writing isn't on her side aka something like Ishqiya. i always feel like Hania just keeps her personal philosophy of living her life completely locked while choosing a project despite benefiting from it when she's not in character. Hania Amir is the coolest chick on the block; fun, quirky, life of the party but also keeping it real, the most popular girl in high school! but none of the big projects she does has ever reflected that on screen in a positive way? like even Rumi had a very pathetic ending despite her being the ONLY GOOD PERSON In the show (my issues with Ishqiya will never end istg). for someone who advocates for many issues, she hasn't really used the power of the audience pull she has to do something about it through her work. am I making sense?
it's like Hania tried being herself onscreen and realized that doesn't work with the masses so she has now said, 'ya know? fuck it all. i'd rather cry and cower onscreen if it means my projects get the views and ratings and i'll defend my characters when asked about them. i need to pay them bills to live the life I actually want to live. the work i do onscreen is just a job and i need not take it home with me.' which ya know..good for her!

This is mostly a reflection, but the more I read about it, the more I believe that Ariel is the 100% Howard Ashman Disney Princess. While Howard did work later in Beauty and the Beast, it was the Beast the character he was mostly drawn to and it shows, Belle's I Want song isn't as elaborate as Ariel's in comparison. And the Aladdin that we got is so distant of his original vision that we can't even say the final Jasmine was his creation. Because of that I think Ariel is the princess where he put all his love and effort and even related to her, which explains the LGBTQA+ subtext in her film, and even Jodi herself said that "Ariel is Howard". It adds such a bittersweet feeling to her character and her movie.
Tumblr media
I completely agree with you and this is the revelation I, too, have had somewhat recently (within the past few years). Growing up, I much preferred women- I've never had a male muse for instance- and I never found myself fascinated by male celebrities or writers or the male mind, in general, when it came to a creative sense. As I've mentioned previously, I write for the original four princesses, and for the first three so much of their characterization and inspiration and physical look can be tracked back to their respective voice actresses (Adriana Caselotti, Ilene Woods, and Mary Costa). I assumed it would be the same with Ariel, and I tried to get by that way for a while, but too many bad projects that Jodi was attached to showed me otherwise. Then, I kept hearing her say in interviews over and over and over again that Ariel resided within Howard.
Initially, this honestly somewhat irritated me. It seemed to be a popular thing to say, specifically starting around 2018 that many people began to parrot, and I thought she was underselling herself. After all, she was the one who sang Part of Your World and kept the character afloat for all these years! It felt more like a performative mark she had to hit as opposed to an authentic tribute. But then, as I examined why I originally fell in love with Ariel in such a deep way, yet actively disliked the characterizations of her in the sequels- and always disliked Belle and Jasmine, but loved the Beast- it occurred to me it really was because of Howard.
This might be a controversial take, but I don't think a CIS straight person could ever fully understand or depict the scope of the character of Ariel. I think Howard really captured so much of the gay experience in her character, through her relationship with her father and with Eric, and even her sisters. Every element of the film and its storyline, down to how she feels about her sisters, is eerily realistic and close to what I feel I've experienced when coming out. I think Ariel began to trend of being the "outsider", feeling "different", and straight people attempted to replicate that with characters like Belle but it just never worked for me.
Ariel works because of the LGBT subtext, but that doesn't exist in Belle. With a writer like Linda Woolverton, it's all too apparent that Belle is a straight, white privileged character that doesn't have the same depth of character or isolating/endangering experiences as the other princesses. While Snow White or Cinderella didn't have LGBT subtext, they still grew up incredibly oppressed in abusive households with little to no resources. Snow White even survived an attempted murder and had to find her way after suddenly becoming homeless through no fault of her own. Belle is the white, conventionally attractive daughter of a wealthy landowner and her issue is...what? That she likes to read, so others view her as strange? Well, at the time Belle existed, being literate would've been viewed as a socially desirable attribute as it would've indicated her high class because that education would've been something that most people couldn't have afforded. Belle's also seen reading in public, attending a library, and even getting a free book from the person who opens the shop. I don't understand how this interest has a stigma attached to it, especially compared to Ariel not having any other friends who were interested in the human world, had to actively hide her interest from her close family and the broader public, it seemed to impact her identity and inflict dissonance upon her physical form as a mermaid, and it caused a massive rift (and even put her in physical harm) with others. Belle's love for books impacts the plot in no way or even informs her own identity. I think Belle was just a bunch of socially admired things lumped into one character and framed in an "outsider story" because they thought it would sell (Belle's stunning, but she's sick of only being valued for her beauty! Belle reads and other people ask her about what she's reading and she's even given a library at one point but it has to make her different somehow! Belle wants adventure, and has all the freedom to pursue it, but she feels repressed because of feminism!), but so little of Howard, if any, is in Belle. She doesn't even have her own song in the original film and is the first princess to have that title. Aurora, in Sleeping Beauty, might only speak eighteen lines but even she has main billing in her film and two songs she sings. With Jasmine, I think they erased so much of the Howard characterization and took the same approach as they did with Belle. Howard, originally, wanted Jasmine to be a more unlikable, spoiled character who has an arc in the film. And, honestly, I think she kind of does come off as a spoiled character...but instead of continuing with that authenticity, I keep being told as an audience that she is perfect and incapable of fault and doesn't need a character arc because she was perfect to begin with. I'd be so fascinated to see how different productions like Tangled or even Mulan would've been with Howard's influence.

Field School — When Summer Comes (Bobo Integral)
Tumblr media
When Summer Comes by Field School
On his full-length debut as Field School, Charles Bert, the former frontman of Washington’s Math and Physics Club, seems to be doing everything he can to avoid attention. There’s the drab band name consisting of two already well-claimed words in indie pop (I’m thinking of The Field Mice, Field Music and Film School, in particular, but there are others). There’s the generic-looking cover art that is the painting equivalent of a stock photo, a perfectly cute but otherwise unremarkable bird sitting in a tree. And then there are Bert’s own words: “If you see me around just act like you didn’t,” he requests on the track of the same name. Or on the infectious “Jennifer Valentine,” with its pop-perfect sound pitched somewhere between The Ladybug Transistor and The Dentists, where he questions his own memorableness: “I wrote your name a thousand times / I wonder if you remember mine.”
And therein lies the strength of When Summer Comes — the way Bert charmingly pairs poetic turns of phrases about love, relationships and their incapacitating side effects with nostalgia-soaked melodies sure to replace whatever tune was previously lodged in your head. The first song that got its hooks (pun subconsciously intended) into me was the title track, and it’s a perfect example of what Bert does so well across this album. Like the other eleven songs, “When Summer Comes” is built around a few sturdy if slightly quivering layers of guitar, a simple snare-forward backbeat and Bert’s stately baritone. “Oh summers come and go like fair-weather friends / but I still want to feel that sting again,” he sings when the chorus hits, his voice sliding from its stubborn usual inflection to a cathartic croon that sends shivers. A rippling, insistent guitar line emerges alongside his vocal, helping to heave it up, and then, like waves meeting the hull of a boat, disappears below, melding into the twangy backdrop. For just under four minutes, Bert captures that emptying yet strangely warm feeling of wanting back a person, a place, and a time even though you know it wouldn’t be good for you, and maybe never was.
When Summer Comes is all janglers, but the guitars have unexpected teeth in places, helping to shake things up moodwise. Standout “Moon Jellies” and the song that follows it, “Is This Our Love Song?,” both carry a layer of fuzz with them throughout, while, somewhat surprisingly, also containing a couple of the album’s most aching melodies. The scratchy opening chords of “Loving You Was Never Gonna Work Out,” meanwhile, seem to signal a downer garage anthem, but quickly turn Magnetic Fields-ward. Beck’s voice, like that group’s Stephin Merritt’s though not nearly as rich, has a distinct stiffness to it, refusing to be hurried no matter how hard the wind’s blowing. In this particular song, Beck also shares a little of Merritt’s sense of melody, his nursery rhyme-like approach to songwriting, and the Droopy dog sentiment that tends to characterize it: There are things you can count on accompanying each season of the year, “Loving You Was Never Gonna Work Out” reckons, but the relationship on its mind was never going to be one of them. You, the listener's relationship with this record could be a different story, though. Take this reviewer’s advice, and Bert’s on track seven, and don’t let it pass you by.

Harmonic Triads and Average Base Mood
I hadn’t put these on tumblr & it occurred to me that I probably should
Theory or possible insight that came to me between some of the recent discussions here.
eg. the positive types would typically jump out of bed with a positive base mood -
unless they have some psyhiatric condition, are under substantial stress or had some major tragic backstory happen to them.
"9s whose parents didnt suck" seemed to be the happiest group overall in the recent"typical moods thread".
Though of course when negative stuff/ tough situations do happen, they do each have characteristic negative corners that they can slip into (For 9s often is this sort of 'why bother with anything?' depressed state, for 7s a pervasive restlessness or understimulation void, and for 2s more of a wet, active pain - "no one likes me or appreciates me, i want to cry and also smash things") Being wedged in between two reactives perhaps reflects how the 7s require ore input to maintain the sunshine & sparkles.
Whereas the competency types would tend to have a more neutral baseline, with the 3s generally reporting this most often. (kinda makes sense, with them being placed between one positive & one negative wing)
You'd think that, if your feelings are mostly reactions to things that happen, there is no reason to have a reaction when nothing recently happened, but apparently not.
This recent psychology book I read a while ago detailed that ppl most often do have some slight low-level mood going on with actual neutrality being somewhat unsual, which tracks with the competency types generally being outnumbered, since theres not as many 3s as 6s or 9s, for example. Even 7 isn't that infrequent, so the positives are probably the greatest majority.
Hence the common adage that "Doesn't everybody want to be happy?" Statistically speaking, most ppl do.
Which leaves the question of how to characterize the reactives.
4s and 6s certainly report higher rates of subjectively experienced negative states (if you give them a big 5/OCEAN questionaire, for example) but this isn't really the case for 8s, whose negative moments are more individual points if something just blew up in their face.
Though they tend to interpret things that others would read negatively as stress, anxiety, anger etc. as positive excitment & "aliveness".
One thing one immediately notes is that reactive types, well, react a lot, and quickly, often going to a lot of reactions in a short time. So maybe there isn't a fixed baseline or center or gravity to the same degree
8s and 4s are both somewhat intensity seeking; The 6s are the most stability-loving out of the bunch but you even hear some of them saying that they do best with a moderate level of challenge, like having something to work against. Some of the cp ones can even be outright thrill-seeking. A cynic might remark that the phobic 6s are so good at making stress for themselves that they dont need any extra stress from the outside. though one might say the same about 4s and drama and in that case we come close to glass houses territory, i can always find something to sulk about if so desired, though for me of course that then goes straight to the intellectualized level. Actually getting to the point of having a physical reaction & crying would not be so pleasant or common for me, which would likely be different for a core 4.
So perhaps ideal state for reactives is some mild "positive stress" though the preferred level and type thereof differs greatly between the individual types. A phobic 6 doesn't per se want to do the same risk-filled jobs & hobbies as an 8. But you do hear even from phobic 6s that there can be a tendency to "always look for something to fix" in a relationship so that they can reaffirm that they & their partner are still on the same team.
This might be where the idea comes from that "a good relationship should have some arguments". That was probably invented by a 6 - cue legions of teenage fanfic writers clumsily inserting a "first argument" scene into their ship fics regardless of whether it made sense for the characters or situation.
I personally wouldn't miss them if there is no need for them, for all that im all for confronting problems when they come up rather than brushing them under the rug
In my experience with a two competency types relationship, there were pretty much zero fights for the first 3 years that it was going good, and not cause grievances were being ignored, either, we'd just, like, discuss improvement suggestions.
Probably one of the main reasons that you often do see competency types pairing up in the first place. "Ah, finally someone whos not clingy & wont mind it if I work alot. What a pleasant absence of drama"
Though, on the rare occasion that an argument does need to happen, one possible pitfall can be to fall into the unspoken convention that the first person to flinch has automatically lost the argument. If you don't like it when ppl draw attention to such involuntary reactions as you didn't manage to keep under wraps, you might wanna extend the same courtesy to your partner...
- im obviously looking to hear you guyses thoughts to further refine this.
