Here's a hell of a unique field school opportunity with the University of Kansas: a dig at the homestead of the notorious Bloody Benders.
The Bender family homestead was located along the Great Osage Trail in the 1870s, and they used portions of their farmhouse as a general store and inn catering to those traveling along the Trail. In reality, the Benders had designed the home to effectively kill, rob, and bury the bodies of the those who stopped at the homestead. The family are believed to have killed at least 21 people. They abandoned the homestead when suspicions about what happened to a series of missing people began to focus on them. It is unknown what happened to the Bender family after they fled the area.
Here's a news article that discusses what the exact goals and plans for the field school are, and how it came about.

Hello again! I messaged earlier about experience with Service dogs and archeology digs and stuff and wanted to say thank you! With your posts and information I felt comfortable enough to continue down the path and now have a beautiful husky service dog (already i know it was a lucky find) who adores me and when she saw me despite being in a room with other dogs and people she had known longer just came up to me and sat on me and wouldn’t move! Sorry if a bit of an over share I just adore her so much. I wanted to come back and update you if that was oaky. I also have a couple more questions!a couple programs I have been looking into to do summer excavations with are opening up and stuff and I wanted to ask about if there is anything in particular I should look to avoid when applying with my service dog in mind. I also wanted to ask if you or anyone you know had any bad experiences with these places or people running it, as the excavation i did this past summer had someone who was “predatory” and I do not really want to find my self in a place there again. And response is appreciated thank you! (Sorry this is getting a bit long, so ill leave it here. Also mandatory pet/service dog tax is paid here)

Aw, I'm so glad to hear that! Your pup looks fantastic—I hope you two get to have many adventures together.
When it comes to applications for field schools (or anything else) with a service dog/disability, here's my advice: do not mention anything about this in your application.
Look, implicit bias is real, and archaeology has a lot of work to do reckoning with ableism in the field. It sucks, but it's true. I don't doubt that the individual people reviewing your application have good intentions, but that still might not necessarily prevent them from unconsciously selecting against you due to your disability.
After you are accepted, send them an email outlining your abilities and the accommodations you will need. You do not owe them any medical information you do not want to give, but you should also balance that with providing instructors with the information they will need to keep you safe in the field.
Disclosing after you've been formally accepted offers you much more robust legal protection—if they turn you down now, it's easier to prove that it's because of your disability. They are also now obligated to provide the accommodations you need.
As for reviewing programs/instructors, I don't know of how much help I can be. Remember that this is the internet, and anything someone says here should be taken with a grain of salt. The best sources of information about things like this are always going to be other people who work in the same area/have experience working with these people/programs. Word gets around. Ask your professors, and see if you can track down some former students.
Best of luck,
-Reid

After 5 days of waiting for Dr. R to come out of COVID quarantine, we started shovel testing today.
It took approximately 10 minutes for one of our shovel test teams to find a broken biface.
Another team found something like 30 flakes in their test pit (about 30 centimeters deep).
So yeah, it was a good day.
Also, this is Mud:

He's going to keep watch over the shovel tests until it's time for him to go back to sleep in the test pit.

Please help us raise money for an Archaeological Field School Program.
It’s been cancelled the last four years cause of COVID and this is our last chance as the professor running this will not be returning next year. Any amount helps.
We're a passionate group of students from Bishop's University and CEGEP Champlain who are going to partake in a life-changing course this summer. CLA309 - Study Abroad in Greece is a course offered by Bishop's University that allows us to spend either 4 or 8 weeks in Greece working on an archaeological dig site, helping to unearth the past.
This unique opportunity not only allows us to learn and grow as people, it will also be instrumental in shaping our futures and future career paths. We're all passionate about history, culture and archaeology and we only hope to deepen this love this summer. We're also all looking forward to getting to know the Greek people and their culture, and are currently studying hard to learn Greek to help us interact with the local community of Ancient Corinth this summer!
Of course, there are many costs associated with this course, and we've been working hard to fundraise to help offset these costs. As students, many of us rely on summer months to work and save up money, so it is doubly important for us to save as much as we can!
Any amount donated will be greatly appreciated and shared equally amongst all of us. It will go towards costs such as plane tickets, room and board, and tuition.
If you would like more information please check out this awesome presentation our Professor created!
Check it out
Thank you so much!
The students of CLA309

Listed: Field School
Tumblr media
Field School is the solo moniker that Charles Bert has adopted following the end of Math and Physics Club, the beloved Washington state indie pop band he co-founded in 2004. His new project’s debut full-length, When Summer Comes, collects highlights from a series of EPs that were released over the past year and combines them with a few new songs. Dusted’s Chris Liberato recently reviewed the album, writing that its strength lies in “the way Bert charmingly pairs poetic turns of phrases about love, relationships and their incapacitating side effects with nostalgia-soaked melodies sure to replace whatever tune was previously lodged in your head.” Below, Bert shares his list of “10 things about growing up in Olympia that (predictably) led to me starting Field School.”
K Records
Tumblr media
K offered a blueprint for making music on your own terms at a time when that was pretty revolutionary. Those bands still feel like hometown heroes to me, even the ones that were just passing through.
Capitol Theater
Tumblr media
Hallowed ground in Olympia’s rock history. It seems like everything happened there, from International Pop Underground to Yo-Yo-A-Go-Go to Ladyfest. It’s my version of Carnegie Hall.
Rainy Day Records
Tumblr media
The standard to which I hold all other record shops. The first cassette I bought was Cuts Like a Knife by Bryan Adams. I could walk to their original location from my house, which meant I could go by myself and spend as long as I wanted.
KGY
Tumblr media
My main exposure to music as a kid was AM radio, and KGY 1240 was our local station. Morning DJ Dick Pust was as famous to me as Casey Kasem, spinning Christopher Cross and the school lunch menu on weekday mornings.
Rain
Tumblr media
For about half the year, sometimes more, it rains, showers, drizzles, and mists. It’s a perfect excuse for hanging out in the basement and making music.
Walks
Tumblr media
Olympia is small and walkable with a diverse patchwork of neighborhoods and urban trails. When I’m stuck on lyrics, I hit the sidewalks.
Puget Sound
Tumblr media
Olympia is a harbor town, and I’ve always felt most at peace around water. There’s a romance and wistfulness about it that seeps into my imagination and my writing.
All-ages!
Tumblr media
Most of the places to see music in Olympia were all-ages, which I assumed was typical. I know now that I was just lucky, because a lot of places didn’t (and don’t) support all-ages venues, which is stupid.
DIY
Tumblr media
If R.E.M. was my entry point for listening to independent music, then Olympia was my entry point to making it. It blew up my conception of what bands could look and sound like and opened the door for shy kids like me who needed the invitation.
Beat Happening
youtube
When I was learning guitar, I couldn’t play “Driver 8,” but I could play “Fortune Cookie Prize,” and that was empowering. In Beat Happening I found songs that I could strum along to with easy chords, but also with depth, meaning, lightness, and darkness. Thirty years later, I’m still borrowing from them (and I still can’t play “Driver 8”). This video for their iconic song “Indian Summer” is a time machine to the Olympia I grew up in.

Field school? How apply? How find? How choose? When do?
Help
Awesome question! Let's break it down, although I'm going to change the order of some of my answers for the sake of clarity.
Field school? An intensive course (usually anywhere from 4-7 weeks) where students get hands on instruction on how to conduct a proper archaeological excavation at an actual archaeological site. Usually held during the summer, but sometimes they also operate during other breaks of the academic year. Most often offered by universities with archaeology programs.
When do? Like I said, usually during the summer. Also, as early as possible! Digging isn't for everyone, and it's better to find out you hate it sooner rather than later. Doing your field school early also gives you the opportunity to do a second one, if you like/can afford it, or find other archaeological work that requires a field school as a prerequisite.
How find? I found both of my field schools by word of mouth. One was being offered by my undergraduate institution, and one was being conducted by a nearby university. Flyers were put up in the hallways of the anthropology/history/classics departments, and people came in to talk to the lower level anthropology/history/classics classes.
It's worth seeing if your local university(ies) have a field school—these are usually much cheaper than going abroad to Greece or Italy or Ireland. If you know you're interested in a particular kind of archaeology (French colonial, Southwest, historical, etc.) try googling [that term] + field school.
If you have professors you've taken relevant courses with, ask them if they have any recommendations! Having someone who can vouch for a program can lessen the likelihood of winding up somewhere miserable (although it doesn't erase the possibility completely).
How choose? This is kind of similar to some of the stuff I just said. Choose a field school based on interests/affordability/proximity/reputation. I would apply to a couple, see which ones you get into, and choose the one you think will be the best fit for you.
How apply? Today is July 20th 2023, which means that most field schools have just completed or are in the middle of running. Based on when you asked this, you will be applying for the next cycle, running in 2024. This is a little bit tricky since programs may not be advertising right now. I would check back in November/December and again in January/February. Although it definitely doesn't hurt to take a look at what things are running now to get an idea of what's out there.
Once you've found a field school you want to apply to, look to see if they have an application or contact information on their website/flyer/advertisement and go from there!
Also? Check out my advice master list for other tips for aspiring archaeologists!

I think the weirdest thing about field school so far is that I'm having so much fun on site excavating that I don't realize how hard the work is and exhausted I am until I get home and practically collapse into bed after my shower lol

Peach Juice?
Location: Timmies
Some Angel descended and bequeathed us with drinks as we slaved away in the forest measuring trees and finding artifacts in the dead heat of summer. Truly blessed. Timing could not be better.
So sweet. So cool. Little tingly. Nice. Very peachy.

DP x DC: The Most Dangerous Card Game
Ok so Danny has essentially claimed earth as his. And he is fully aware that there are constant threats to the planet. Now he can’t stop a threat that originates on earth (that’s something he’ll leave to the Justice league) but he can do something about outside threats. Doing some research on ancient spells, rituals, and artifacts, he cast a world wide barrier on the planet to protect it from hostile threats so they cannot enter. This will prevent another Pariah Dark incident. However, barriers like this come at a price. You see, there are two ways to make a barrier. Either make one powered up by your own energy and power (which would be constantly draining) or set up a barrier with rules. The way magic works is that nothing can be absolutely indestructible. It must have a weakness. The most powerful barriers weren’t the ones reinforced with layer after layer of protective charms and buffed up with power. Those could eventually be destroyed either by being overpowered, wearing them down, or by cutting off the original power source. No, the most powerful barriers were the ones with a deliberate weakness. A barrier indestructible except for one spot. A cage that can only be opened from the outside. Or that can only be passed with a key or by solving a riddle. So Danny chooses this type of barrier and does the necessary ritual and pours in enough power to make it. And he adds his condition for anyone to enter.
Now the Justice league? Find out about the barrier when Trigon attempts to attack, they were preparing after he threatened what he would do once he got to earth. How he would destroy them. The Justice league tried to take the fight to him first but were utterly destroyed, so they retreated home to tend to their injuries, and fortify earth for one. Last. Stand. Only when Trigon makes his big entrance…he’s stopped.
The Justice league watch in awe as this thin see-through barrier with beautiful green swirls and speckled white lights like stars apears blocking Trigon and his army’s advance. The barrier looks so thin and fragile yet no matter how hard the warlord hits, none of his attacks can get through and neither can he damage said barrier. That’s when Constantine and Zatanna recognizes what this barrier is. Something only a powerful entity could create. For a moment, the league is filled with hope that Trigon can’t get through yet Constantine also explains that it’s not impenetrable. And clearly Trigon knows this too for he calls out a challenge.
And that’s when, in a flash of light, a tiny glowing teenager appears. He looked absolutly minuscule compared to Trigon and yet practically glowed with power (this isn’t a King Danny AU though).
And that is when the conditions for passing the barrier are revealed. And the Justice realize that the only thing stopping Trigon and his army from decimating earth. The only way he can get through….is by beating this glowing teenager in a card game.
Not just any card game though. The most convoluted game Sam, Danny, and Tucker invented themselves. It’s like the infinite realms version of magic the gathering, combined with Pokémon, and chess. And Danny is the master. So sit down Trigon and let’s play.
(The most intense card game of the Justice league’s life).
After Danny wins, this happens a few more times with outer word beings and possibly even demons attempting to invade earth, yet none have been able to beat the mysterious teenager in a card game. Constantine might even take a crack at it and try to figure out how to play. He’s really bad though. Every time this happens, the Justice league worry that this might be the time the teenager looses. Yet every time, he wins (even if only barely).
Meanwhile, Danny, Sam, and Tucker have gotten addicted to the game and play it almost daily. Some teachers might seem them playing the game are are like ‘awww how cute’ not realizing this game is literally saving the world. Jazz is just happy they aren’t spending as much time on their screens playing Doomed.
#DPxDC#dcxdp#Danny makes a card game to save the world.#Technically he worded the ritual so that they had to ‘beat’ him as those are the most powerful barriers and most reliable.#keys can just get lost or stolen (like the one to Pariah’s Coffin)#A riddle would be useless once someone figured out the answer. Like how no one takes the sphynx seriously anymore.#(Sorry Tuck. But it’s true).#And there is NO WAY Danny is just leaving a hole open for anyone to pass through. No thank you!#So…beating him. But it’s not like Danny wanted to fight so…he edited the ritual a TINY bit. Card games are good. Much less painful too.#Danny Tucker and Sam made the most complicated card game they could imagine.#It’s based on their strategies for fighting ghosts. Capturing them in thermoses. And MUCH based on a on field battle strategy.#It often requires spontaneous thinking on the spot. So Danny? In his ELEMNT. It doubles as practice for his actual ghost battles too.#They had SO much fun making this.#Sam added an entire series of plant cards that act as traps and healing ointments and duds that just take up the field.#Tucker added legitimate hyroglyphics combined with Latin as well as English and ghost speak.#Yes. You actually have to speak that language to play. With proper pronunciation. (Amity Parker’s think the three are talking gibberish.)#I headcanon Sam and Tucker are fluent in Ghost.#Constantine WILL figure this game out SO HELP HIM!#Some of the cards also have combinations related to constellations either in name or placement on the board.#By the way the board is based on a Hexagonal summoning circle with Rhunes along the edges#And the placement of the cards on the board and on what rhune MATTERS.#Also the cards move disintegrate and have certain abilities. Think of Harry Potter Wizard Chess.#But they are normal when Danny plays at school. This is just for ✨effect✨ Against invaders.#Danny faces multiple opponents. He also halts alien invasions.#While Danny COULD stop crime on earth he’s not sure how to fight a normal human and hold back so he sticks to ghosts.#The Justice league are going crazy trying to figure out who this entity is and after deep research are convinced this is some sort of#Ancient being who has protected earth for millenia. They have paintings on ruins and everything.#Danny is not aware they think this.#Raven starts praying to Danny as if he is a god and wrangles the other Teen Titans into doing so as well. Danny is still unaware of this.#Danny is not a King or an ancient. Just a very VERY strong ghost.

Today we had community elders, resource company executives, and and visiting archaeologists at our sites.
It was great, but it was also A Lot.
First an archaeologist from back home, who has been on every dig at this site since the first surveys, stopped by. He'll be here for a few days, and he's always fun to have around.
A very accomplished and well-known archaeologist, who ran the digs here in the '90s, also showed up, which is very cool, since he's going to stick around for a bit and give some lectures on his ongoing research at the site. I've read so many of his papers, so this is really, really cool.
And then a whole bunch of visiting business executives from resource companies that work in the area flew in, accompanied by representatives from the First Nations who manage the site, and we showed them some of our finds and the work we were doing excavating. All our students did a great job, and hopefully the publicity will help with funding needs for the project.
But I am so tired. That was a lot of attention for one day.
