I believe that no matter what he did, there was no happy ending for Jin Guangyao.

Whether he stayed with the Nie (he would always wish that he could have been legitimized by his father. [Because of the better social standing it would bring him which was a very big deal actually he would have been miserable unless he was legitimized, because he really wanted his father's acceptance, because he had to replace that horrible last memory of Jinlintai in his mind, because it was his birthright, & most importantly because it was his mother's last wish], he would get bullied & humiliated & get looked down upon every day by almost everyone, he would always wish [& know that with his potential] he could reach much higher and make the changes he wanted to make in the world) or didn't, or join the Lans (the same problems but maybe with less bullying and fewer shit talks because it would have been against the Lan rules and also the Lans owed JGY big time) or the Jiangs, whether Meng Shi survived or didn't (I think JGY wouldn't have told her about that staircase incident, then who knows what lies he'd make up and what he would do to hide that he was not accepted by the Jins from his mother or get accepted by them at any cost and what it would result in) whether NHS planned his downfall or didn't (he still had the head of NMJ in his secret room that he claimed "wouldn't let him go", he still slept in the same bed as his sister, he still had and had lost a son with her that he claimed that "his blood ran cold everytime he looked at him" & whether he did have him killed or not he blamed himself for his death [I've explained here why I think that], he still had to live with the knowledge that no matter what horrible deed he committed for JGS, no matter how hard he tried he was never "worth mentioning" to his father, and had to lose all his considerable filial piety & what was essentially his life's mission to the point that he murdered his father) whether he went to Dongying (he'd have still lost all he built in his motherland, despite years of trying to build himself a good reputation and prove anyone who taunt him wrong, he'd still always be known as the rotten "son of a prostitute" there. And He'd have to start from scratch in Dongying, He'd still had to leave without Meng Shi's body, NHS would never get off his tail, and he'd be separated from LXC and JL [even if they followed him, he likely would feel bad for separating them from their sects and their families. Those were things that JGY himself longed for most of his life. He wouldn't want them to follow him.]) or didn't. & don't even start with him marrying LXC which would make all his problems exponentially worse. It would probably get LXC in trouble too (maybe he'd had to leave his sect) and that would be something that JGY would never want.

Certainly, what happened to him in canon was the worst possible scenario and he might have been less miserable in some of those other scenarios, but there were just no happy endings for him.

Anyways, the Jin sect were able to become the powerhouse sect amongst the great sects purely because the other sects did not care to oppose them, and I can imagine that this is the very reason that the Wen were also a powerhouse sect. (Disclaimed: I’m coming at this purely from the angle of what the book tells us, not outside historical context. For one, I do not know said context, but two, as important as I think that context is to flesh out some elements of the story, I think it’s just as important to not brush off what the novel literally shows us even if it doesn’t perfectly fit said historical context, as this is not a historical novel.)

When we get to the pre-sunshot campaign flashbacks, everyone already knows about all the evils of Wen Ruohan. It’s openly known that he killed the Nie sect leader out of jealousy and that this is why Nie Mingjue hates him. Lan Xichen immediately pinpoints the blame for the waterborne abyss onto the Wen, to absolutely no one’s surprise. It’s even noted that the Wen have been attacking and subsuming smaller cultivation clans around it to bolster its power, which is why like half of all the cultivation clans are affiliated with the Wen. Not to mention, Wen Ruohan disrespects the great sect leaders to their faces, and they all just take it. The Wen demand that all sect heirs and 20 extra disciples be “taught” by them? Everybody sends their children. The second son of the Wen clan almost kills all of those heirs after weeks of mistreatment? Well, they didn’t actually die, so it’s all good. The Wen burn a great sect’s most prized possession, kill its sect leader, kidnap the second son, and have the heir on the run? Well, it didn’t happen to us, so no need for concern. War only breaks out because the one sect leader who actively hated the Wen was attacked, and even then, only 3 of the 4 remaining great sects fully participate.

Now, how do the Jin rise to power? They host a lot of banquets, they subsume the smaller clans that were formerly affiliated with the Wen, they disrespect other great sect leaders to their faces while cultivators cheer them on. And everyone allows them to because they simply do not care to fight back against the Jin; this is their status quo. The only fight they can muster is to massacre the remaining Wen clan members and the man protecting them, and then it’s back to petty bickering while ignoring the genocidal elephant in the room. The first real sign of discontent with the Jin’s power comes from the Xue Yang incident, which showed that 1) a great sect leader could successfully oppose the Jin if they so chose, 2) the Jin were not infallible because they did have to appease Nie Mingjue on the issue, something the Wen never had to do, and 3) that’s why Nie Mingjue had to be killed as the only one willing to oppose the Jin (in certain circumstances). What gets me, especially, is when all these crimes come to light in Lotus Pier and Guanyin Temple, Lan Xichen and the rest of the nameless cultivators’ biggest issues seem, again, to linger on Jin Guangyao’s personal culpability to his personal relationships but not the Jin sect whose overall greed for power necessitated these actions. (Like really, fuck the sex workers and the minor clans used for experiments, I guess. Fuck the entirety of Yi City, I guess.) There’s a reason Wei Wuxian is so uncomfortable by the way the conversation in Lotus Pier against Jin Guangyao goes to personal slander while everyone ignores the more far-reaching issues with the reveal (and even how the reveals came to them).

So yeah, the Jin rise to power comes out of the same place that the Wen rise to power did: passivity and status qo maintenance.

my dream portrayal of jgy is that he's an independant character with his own strengths (not lxc's sweet little child-birthing wifey) that get recognition and appreciation (and that aren't 'being a good mommy/rabid event planner, haha, such a control freak this a-yao'), who deserves and gets love (but isn't just a tiny lovely thing whose only purpose is-- do you get my point already i wonder), who's allowed to be in a bad mood (but isn't defined by those moments, which is very important to me personally), but who isn't a cruel or bad person (and whose attempts at explaining his situation to others are taken seriously, and not as just him trying to Manipulate Others As Usual because, and i might be controversial but idqc, if i'm to call a character a gaslighting manipulator i'd like to see cases of him a/ doing it b/ succesfully c/ often, and no, "well he conned lxc into thinking he's not an evil murderous twink, SOMEHOW" doesn't count)

People on Twitter were making comments saying that LXC was a bad brother (for - I'm paraphrasing here - not listening to LWJ when he tried to give him the facts about JGY - and - only taking care of LWJ when he was in seclusion because he felt guilty/LWJ's punishment was LXC's fault!) and people rightfully pointed out instances in the story where LXC was there for LWJ and not vice versa which led to a lot of back and forth

As we all know, every character is worthy of critique EXCEPT for our lovely main pairing who never do anything wrong ever and when they do it's excusable because everyone in the world is mean and bad

However, it can't be him- the coffin should prevent such a thing. Alone with himself and the spirit though, he begins to wonder, and accepts it must be true. Of course, until an incident occurs thar forces him to break seclusion and get WWX involved, who confirms its not JGY.

Sandalwood! But he spends so much time at Golden Carp Tower after JGY ascends that he often smells of their incenses too. Probably also smells of clean air and pines when he's just come from the mountain/been flying. Of the entire cast he's probably the one who smells the best, let's be real.

ctrl+c, ctrl+v my JGY answer, but it's Xiyao. I don't think the text indicates that they are secret lovers, but their intimacy and affection reads as romantic to me, and I think had circumstances been more kind that is the relationship both would prefer whether or not either of them has consciously considered it. I think they're also both very happy with their friendship as it is, so perhaps longing but not necessarily pining. They see each other constantly, after all. And I will leave a link to this again to illustrate why I believe they're a strong partnership who could have rebuilt their relationship had NHS not intervened.

I already took a cricket bat to Xicheng's balls, so let's say Nielan. There's no evidence in the text that their initial relationship is anything other than a friendship between two young clan leaders(/leader and heir), and by the time the war is properly underway they're already drifting apart in terms of how their respective worldviews are being tested by their circumstances. You yourself did the ultimate breakdown of their relationship, and while there's certainly affection it's hardly a meeting of the minds.

I will just also add a tart observation that for all fandom's supposed plethora of ace representation, NMJ the canonical ace is almost never depicted as such.

favorite platonic/familial relationships

I am doubling up here quite a bit as I've already covered LXC's friendship with NMJ and his relationship with LWJ, so as a third option I'll say I find his relationship with his mother interesting. Going to hold off on more details as some absolute monster sent me an ask about her and it would be better served there. Suffice to say I have thoughts.

a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with

Himbo LXC has been slated enough by finer minds than mine, but OK, I'll sharpen my axe for his equally frustrating cousin, service top LXC. I would genuinely be interested if someone could point me to anything in the text that indicates LXC has any desire to 'serve' JGY and dote on him either in the bedroom or outside it, because I don't see a shred of evidence that he's harbouring any secret yearnings of that nature.

Consistently throughout the entirety of MDZS, JGY is the one catering to LXC's needs and we never see either of them express the remotest dissatisfaction with this arrangement. Yes the narrative isn't focused directly on them and all sorts of things might be happening in the gaps, but that puts 'service top' LXC in the category of speculative at best.

Actually I think I'm bending over backwards to categorise it as speculative. At minimum there are far more plausible ways for him to express his romantic and sexual affections if given further opportunity. We actually see a fair bit of LXC and how he interacts with JGY, and we know how they behave when relaxed together. There's nothing in any of their scenes that betrays any kind of anxiety about wanting to protect JGY, to wait on him, to dote on him. We can speculate that LXC at times yearns to relinquish the persona of clan leader, because he is a human being and no human being wants to always live inside their role, and I'm sure there are times when he would like to express his emotions more freely. But it doesn't follow that doing so would open the floodgates on some suppressed desire to serve and 'spoil' JGY.

I've written about this before, but LXC is already meeting JGY's needs. He likes JGY and he respects and supports him. There's also no indication that JGY secretly wants to be taken care of and doted on. Just, no indication at all that either of them is dissatisfied with their existing dynamic, which does not consist of spoilt JGY and protective servile LXC.

As always, if this is what people enjoy then that's great. Fandom is fun and we are all here for different reasons but ultimately to enjoy ourselves. My frustration is that it's like trawling the Atlantic with a tea strainer trying to find content that's more in line with the novel.

Like after a while of being in hiding with JGY in Not Yunping Please God, Why Would JGY Travel Back To Yunmeng Or Anywhere In Hubei And Why Would LXC Flee Towards Hubei Not To Mention Jiangsu Borders Shandong Like Come On I Think We All Know JGY Travelled South Out Of Shandong Towards Or Into Jiangsu But Even If He Didn't Why Would He Ever Go Back To Yunmeng

My ATLA AU is still my fave, shameless shameless, but to vary things a little I do like the idea of an AU influenced by HDM. The problem is that I've read a couple before back in the mists of time and the dæmon choices were baffling. JGY with a fox and LXC with a deer I'm on board with though, and it would be an interesting challenge to synthesise something out of the canon dynamics while incorporating all the Dust and Magisterium stuff.

I'm a basic bitch who does love the robe he wears in the CQL Xiyao doing their thing right in front of NMJ's salad scene. Just generally approve of the choice they made to introduce colour to LXC's wardrobe to differentiate him. It's something I pinch for my fic (pls cancel me now for being hypocritical about purism). Oh but I also love him with hair loopies in fanart, this is noncanonical but I see what you did there with all the official art, LWJ is the lead so he has to have the sexy bits of hair outside the ribbon even though the more austere style given to LXC would be a better match for his character. I reject this technically extracanonical material and substitute my own personal preferences in a further display of shameless hypocrisy. I regret nothing.

genuinely jin ling was better in the novel though. I liked drama JL but the fact that wwx actually was responsible for his parents’ deaths added some real intrigue to their relationship and some messy, painful questions not so easily answered. I’m probably never going to forget his final scene of the book where he was just standing there crying in confusion and anger, trying to reconcile his love and admiration for wwx with the fact that he was responsible for what happened at nightless. that was some good character shit

actually i have discovered the only true and correct reading of md/zs: wgxn are the true Evil Men of mdzs. just look at how they’re dealing with lxc post-guanyin
