Raised in Cokeworth to a muggle librarian and a muggle school teacher, her upbringing was relatively simple. Her home was dreamed up and doodled on the back of pieces of notepaper when her parents were young, with ivy growing up the walls and beautiful flowers adorning their cottage garden. Lily and her older sister PETUNIA EVANS [sibling/adversary] were named after those flowers, securing a special bond Lily thought they’d share forever. Her sister was her best friend, until the day it became clear that Lily Evans was different. When she was seven years old, playing in the garden with her sister Lily noticed as she and Petunia danced and twirled the flowers in their garden danced too, singing a merry tune as she had once seen in a film. Lily realised she could do extraordinary things, she blew a dandelion into butterflies and could make a bud bloom in her hands. Lily considered herself special, her sister did not. Petunia became jealous of her, saying cruel and spiteful things about Lily’s abilities until tears rolled down her cheeks. A freak was what she called her and her best friend became her adversary. A young boy in Spinner's End became a place of safety for Lily, SEVERUS SNAPE [adversary/former best friend].

A quiet boy, who sometimes appeared awkward in his own skin, Lily brought out some confidence in him, a look of awe in his eyes as she made nature transform into something even more beautiful. Severus told her the magic of the world behind the curtain from her own. Apparently she was a witch, like Severus’ mother and one day she would arrive home from school to a letter from PROFESSOR ALBUS DUMBLEDORE [former professor/leader] telling her she had been selected to attend a magical school for people just like them. Sure enough her letter arrived and Petunia was delighted to hear Lily would be moving away to boarding school, comparing it to a prison rather than a place of education. Lily did not want to leave on bad terms with her sister, but as she boarded the train for school just aged eleven she knew their relationship was well and truly over. Sorted into Gryffindor, Lily quickly befriended a few fellow lions she was fortunate enough to be sharing a dorm with that year. MARLENE MCKINNON [best friend], MARY MACDONALD [best friend], and DORCAS MEADOWES [best friend] were unique characters who made the transition to her new life easier.

Mary was her rock during the process, also a Muggle-Born, they were bubbly, friendly and seemingly unphased by the hustle and bustle of their new world. Lily attempted to follow suit and the beginning of classes signalled a new found confidence for Lily as it quickly became established amongst her peers that she was an incredibly talented witch. A firm favourite of her professors, particularly Professors Slughorn and Fltwick, Lily’s talents began to attract her both positive and negative attention at school, as people flocked to be her friend and ask for her help with their studies. JASPER AVERY [adversary] was particularly jealous of Lily’s talents and frequently made it known he believed her to be lesser, due to her blood status. Lily however, would never be deterred and garnered a bit of a reputation for late night duels by The Black Lake to take down those who dared to challenge her and put their abilities where their mouth was. Lily had thick skin and a sharp mind, which meant cleverly orchestrated insults often followed the sting of her spells. It was this fire that attracted the unwanted attention of JAMES POTTER [close friend/potential love interest/former adversary], a fellow Gryffindor, who Lily found terribly arrogant.

To Lily, James, SIRIUS BLACK [close friend/former adversary] and PETER PETTIGREW [close friend/former adversary] were self-entitled bullies who had found entertainment in making fun of others, namely Severus- though these dynamics quickly shifted. In her fourth year after a stern talking to from McGonagall about her fighting, Lily accepted a position as a prefect with REMUS LUPIN [close friend] and began to see things differently without blood red rage. Her once good friend had sought the company of Avery and LARKIN MULICBER [adversary] another boy Lily despised due to his disgusting treatment of Mary which had left her beaten and bruised. Lily couldn’t understand why he would associate with such people and when she caught him calling her a mudblood with his ‘friends’ and heard James Potter of all people defending her, Lily had little time for his antics. She was still not convinced of James and his friends, but her mind was made up on Severus. From then onwards, Lily was ice cold towards him, not even bothering to insult him but rather looking through him with as much disdain as she could muster.

After graduating both a prefect, head of her class and Head Girl- Lily was anxious to get her life started. As much as she loved her parents, she had no desire to spend any time with her sister and quickly moved into a house-share with American witch PRUDENCE OWENS [housemate] and JONATHAN REEVES [housemate] whom Lily vaguely remembered from school. It was jarring living with people she’d never met after spending so much time with her friends, but strangely Lily liked the separation and enjoyed the oddities of her two flatmates who couldn’t be any different from her. Prue and Jon mostly kept to themselves, which worked for Lily who enjoyed staying in her room after a long day at work. Lily accepted a position working for The Ministry of Magic in their Spells and Curses research department, studying spells and trying to push the limits of magic as they knew it. The job suited Lily perfectly, with a curious disposition and a joy of learning she hoped would never fully be quenched in her role. She saw her job as somewhat academic and didn’t realise how important it would become until people began disappearing. It was because of her skillset that Lily was asked to join The Order of The Phoenix, a secret underground group, it seemed most of her friends had been drafted into by their former headmaster.

When BOOKER BAGNOLD [person of interest] died on Halloween in 1983 everyone suspected a werewolf attack but PANDORA FORTESCUE [friend/colleague] thought differently, though no one quite paid any attention. A whimsical witch, though she was talented, people often overlooked her- but Lily was in awe of Pandora and paid attention to her research, though admittedly long after the Booker case was closed by the Ministry. It had irritated Lily that no one had listened to Pandora and privately Lily began working with her on the case, conducting research into what they thought might have caused the wounds on Booker and looked for any similarities. Annoyingly when ROSALIE FLINT [person of interest] went missing there was no body for her and Pandora to look over and BENJY FENWICK’s [person of interest] vampire attack seemed to be just that. Lily parked her research for some time, irritated that hers and Pandora’s theory didn’t quite seem to fit. Booker hadn’t been attacked by a werewolf, that much she was sure of- even if Benji had and Rosalie had just gone missing. With bated breath Lily waits for the next person to fall, as ghoulish and gruesome as it sounds. Lily knows the Ministry or perhaps their feared rival organisation are framing creatures. All she needs is proof and motive, so maybe her quiet and secretive housemate Jonathan, might be a good place to start.

This story is about love, but is not to be confused with a love story. It's about the love we should have had. The love we don't think we deserve. The crooked love we settle for. It is about how, in letting others love us, we learn to love ourselves.

Chapter 13: Sun Bleached Flies

Lily didn’t know why she’d expected Petunia to be at King’s Cross, but when she saw her mother’s small frame standing on the platform alone, her face burned with embarrassment. She ducked her head as she headed in the lone woman’s direction, trying not to watch as fellow classmates reunited with their lively families. Rose Evans was slender in every sense of the word, her long face dragging the corners of her mouth down, the tips of her clear blue eyes swooping sadly toward the ground. Whenever Rose looked at her, Lily got the feeling her mother’s gaze wasn’t fully focused, as though one or both of her eyes were staring at something just behind Lily’s head. She let Rose pull her into a one-armed hug and said, “Hi, Mum.” Though Rose said against her daughter’s cheek, “Oh, my girl, it’s so good to see you,” her words were hollowed out on the inside. They made their way back onto the muggle platforms and out to the car park without another word, though Rose turned around to look at Lily once, as if checking she was still there. The story of Orpheus and Eurydice came to mind, and with it a brand new wave of embarrassment flooded over Lily. A lump formed in her throat. The words echoed in her mind, No one would ever try that hard to save you. No one would ever worry enough to turn around. It was pitiful. She was pitiful. Away from the safety of her friends for less than five minutes, and already crumbling.

Lily suffering in m/m Fics

I don't know what is the big deal.

I mean Sirius who is protagonist in so many fics, general or romantic or slice of life etc, himself goes through unimaginable suffering to reach an ambiguous ending which is bittersweet.

But these people have problem with making lily suffer. Why? Because she is a female character. And in the times we live, females are not supposed to suffer???

Isn't it upto the characterisation of the author about what happens to lily. And the storyline.

Maybe she started cheating on james with snape and James rather than confronting decided to give her a taste of her own medicine. Maybe in such scenario lily comes back to her senses and wants James back and maybe James is finally done with her and lives his hea with sirius. This right here is a happy ending for prongsfoot and not so for lily.

Or maybe James is a gay man with strong internalized homophobia and he decides to trap the most popular girl in the school so that no one can ever doubt. But once her relaxes and feels safe after marriage, he decides to go out and test the water, so to speak.

No lily Evans bashing. This is a tag I only see with lily. The one character in hp world we know the least about. And the author was successful in making us all believe that because James and lily were oh so great- any suffering that comes should come to lowlifes like sirius whose own parents hurt him or Peter who was born a traitor or hell even snape whose teenage years shaped into all the wrong choices and worst imaginable adulthood.

James and lily and specially lily should not suffer. The most you can do is kill them before old age. Anything more is unacceptable because lily is a woman.

I mean common.

I agree that it should not be done for the sake of bashing or making her out to be the thorn amongst the rosy prongsfoot Or jegulus relationship.

No, absolutely not. I agree that her worth shouldn't be only as a girlfriend or wife.

But she could be a grey character of her own whose poor choices and wrong decision lead to some suffering.

We see she smiles at snape's cost. We see that she doesn't sympathies with a teen petunia. We see her being friends with snape until he uttered that word to her, up until before that she was discrediting every other muggleborn in school by putting her head under sand. Because I feel that only muggleborn snape showed a basic human decency towards was her.

In fact i see her as capable of being a wonderful grey character. So why limit her with only being a Mary sue who is the best and gets the best. She was freinds with snape, a dark gray shade character. Wife to James, again a grey character. Then became friend with Sirius, again an ambiguous in terms of good or bad character. Canon lily surrounded herself around morons because she herself was a moron.

And life is unfair. We know this.

So why should it be unfair to only sirius or james but lily has people marching for her to only get a happy and respectful and wonderful life.

Even gods suffer in whatever mythology you pick.

But lily shouldn't???

So aren't you asking for the same as jkr. A sweet wonderful life for our dear lily evans because she as a female and a mother is great so she should live a wonderfull life.

Hell, my mother is the most wonderful person I know but let me tell you that being good at heart doesn't make the suffering less. If anything good people face most trials in life....

Ps- being cheated on is based upon how much respect your partner has for you. I mean yes love can fade but if they respect you as a human. They will have the decency to cut things off before starting something new. But in no way is being cheated on is about the person who is cheated.

In fact all these people marching for lily should just chill because at the end of the day even if she is cheated on, she will have the moral high ground.

The real question is - was canon James Potter as a character capable of cheating her????

hi!!! i’ve searched for this fic everywhere and can’t for the life of me find it!

james is a formula one driver and lily works at sleekeazy; their first meeting does not go well because lily is extremely rude about james’ choice of career; a while later euphemia invites lily to spend christmas with them and asks james to drive her to their house and the drive is really awkward, it starts raining a whole lot so they have to stop at a hotel for the night but there’s only one room so they take it and they end up getting together that night but because if a misunderstanding when lily overhears a phone call between james and sirius they fight lily decides she is going to spend the rest of the holidays with petunia and vernon but they make up in the car while james is taking her to the train station and then when they come back home james introduces lily as his girlfriend!

hopefully someone will recognize it & thank you for the brilliant account ❤️

It features a Severus who grows from uncertain young man to confident lover and a Minerva who is recognizably older, more mature, but with a touch of human insecurity. It also features a Filch who is gloriously realized as a character with all his warts intact (like Severus) but also a few surprises. We also get to meet Eileen Prince and get a hint about where Severus got some of his good and bad qualities. A nifty little twist wraps this fic up in a pretty wonderful package.

PART I

The summer was nearly over and Lily was feeling a little … restless. Her and Gideon had broken up after dating for nearly a year and she decided to take the summer to herself. She went to bookshops with Remus. She went to concerts with Mary, and every once in a while she went to a party. It was usually fun for a little while. She’d play a game. Talk to a few people, and then she’d head home before it was too late.

She always wished there was a reason to stay later but there never was.

Until, she went to one for Marlene McKinnon’s birthday.

Lily did the usual pass through where she nodded at a few people before she found her usual pack of friends. This time though Mary and Alice weren’t there so she headed over to Dorcas and Remus.

Dorcas was slightly taller than her with a leaner, tighter figure, chestnut curls and big brown eyes that seemed to hypnotize any man that talked to her. Lily smirked a little when she saw the way Remus was getting drawn into it, completely unaware.

“Hey, guys,” Lily nodded at them.

“Hey,” Remus said.

Dorcas said, “Lily, have you ever had a threesome?”

Remus started choking on the sip of his drink he just took.

“No,” Lily laughed, hitting Remus on the back lightly.

“Ever been with a girl?” Dorcas asked curiously.

Lily shook her head. “Just Gideon. Why?”

“Lupin and I were having a debate,” Dorcas told her. “He thinks that most of the people in this room haven’t had sex and if they have it’s very vanilla.”

Lily said, “well…” she laughed, “tragically, I’m in that category.”

“It’s not tragic,” Remus reassured her. “I was telling Dorcas I don’t think most people could just get into that mindset.”

Dorcas leaned against the wall, arching her back accenting her slight curves perfectly. A fact that Remus immediately caught as his eyes shot down to her chest in her beaded, backless, tank top.

Lily flushed and laughed a little. “I’ll see you too around.”

She headed out to see if there was anyone else she knew or if she would have to head out. There were a few books she had waiting for her if she didn’t see anyone but the birthday girl appeared and hugged her before she followed that instinct.

“Lily! I’m so glad you came!” Marlene grinned.

Lily smiled and said, “Of course I came! Happy birthday! I hope you like your present. I left it on the pile.”

“I’m sure I will love whatever it is. Although… is it another cardigan?” Marlene guessed excitedly.

Lily laughed, “it perhaps might be… You said you needed a new one but I will let the color be a surprise.”

“Oh I love that!” Marlene told her before she lowered her voice and asked her. “By the way. A few of us are going to Greece for a few days and I was wondering what you were doing for the next two weeks before school?”

The answer was nothing.

She had earned enough with her summer job to be able to take the rest of the summer off but there really wasn’t much she wanted to do. Her mother had passed away some time ago and her father was working more hours than ever at his law firm, even her older sister Petunia was busy planning her self-proclaimed ‘wedding of the ages.’ It was really just her and her cat Kitt, who was probably more than happy to stay on her own for a week or even two before they went back to the castle.

“What are the sleeping arrangements? How much is everything?” Lily checked before she signed up for anything.

Marlene pulled her over to a hallway mirror so she could fix the stray blonde hairs that had come out of her bun and reapply her bright red lipstick. “Sleeping arrangements are several bedrooms and couches so there’s always a place to sleep. Food is covered, so really you’d only have to pay for any souvenirs you want.”

“Who all is going?” Lily asked curiously.

“Sirius, James, Remus, Dorcas, Amelia, Caradoc, Dirk and Emma I think. But it’s a big house so it’s a fun thing,” Marlene said before she tilted her head and said, “you should come. It will be so much fun.”

Lily looked up at the taller blonde and paused. “I’ll think about it.”

“You should,” Marlene told her. “Okay, I have to mingle, but have fun alright?”

Lily nodded, staying for a few moments before she headed out.

When she got home, she thought she’d find her father passed out on the couch but he was doing the dishes in the kitchen. Lily smiled, walking over and hugging his arm. “I would have done that.”

“No, no. I can clean up after myself, pumpkin.” Mr. Evans kissed her temple. “You have fun?”

She nodded, “yeah. Marlene had a good birthday.”

“I’ve been meaning to talk to you. I have to work a lot this week. We took on more clients this week to get ahead of the third quarter. Can you fend for yourself for a bit? Or better yet stay with one of your friends? I hate to think of you laying around the house all day. You should go off and have a bit of fun. You’re only young once you know.”

Lily snorted, “I have heard that… Well, Marlene did invite me to go with her-”

“Go then,” he told her warmly. “Have fun. Wear sunscreen, hydrate but have fun.”

Lily laughed, “okay dad. I’ll… I’ll tell her I’m coming.”

“Good, good,” he yawned, wiping his eyes. “I’m going to head in. Make sure you leave me a note with the details before you leave eh? And be back before we have to go. I want to take you to your last car ride to Hogwarts.”

Lily softened, hugging his side, “of course dad.”

Then she drew back and laughed under her breath when she watched him go through the house and lock up. She always went behind him after he went to bed to make sure he didn’t forget one. He rarely did but Lily knew he was tired and easily could have. She would be relieved when he could retire and just relax sometimes, but he had a few years before that happened. So until then, she didn’t mind checking.

When she got up to her room, she found her orange tabby passed out on her cat bed right by the window. She knelled down and pet Kit for a few moments before she stood up and wrote Marlene an owl telling her she was in and to let her know when and where.

Length-wise, The Roe Deer And The Knight is definitely an outlier, but that's because of the style it was written in 😅 (I'm not even sure this is what you meant by "last line", lol!)

Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting) — Angst, Rated M, 14k

The summer after fifth year is no one’s favorite summer. Sirius Black is ostracized from his friends, suffocating under the thumb of his parents and lashing out however he can. Lily Evans is grappling with the fallout of her friendship with Severus Snape, not to mention dealing with Petunia’s insistence of cutting Lily out of her life. James Potter is feeling the sting of betrayal and wrestling with what it means to forgive, while learning to take accountability himself. A chance encounter might be the key to turning the tides for everyone.

My heart, my soul, my baby. This was the idea that got me writing again. It took me a while to sort it out and actually write the damn thing, but man.....this one has such a special place in my heart for me.

2. A Thrill Divine, Down My Spine — Fluff, Rated T, 2.5K

“Oh shove it, Potter. I’m just saying. You’re like…a really nice glass of Ogden’s Old,” she says, eyeing a bottle of the spirit and signaling to the barkeep. A little lost for words, James stares at her. “How strong was that drink?” “You know what I'm getting at — like a really good thing personified. Take a compliment Potter, God.” She turns on her stool to face him, sliding one of the firewhiskeys his way. Or: Two totally platonic friends get drinks after a rough day.

This one came out of nowhere but I'm so pleased with how it turned out!

3. restless waves rise and fall — Pirate AU, Rated T, 37k (WIP)

In efficiency and general seafaring know-how, First Mate Evans makes up for what Captain Potter lacks. So she has to make up for a lot. Or: In which James Potter is a gentleman pirate and Lily Evans is his loyal but vastly more competent First Mate.

Originally thought up as a one-shot for Jily Week, this Pirate AU really took on a life of its own. This is my first multichap fic and I'm posting the last chapter next week and when I tell you Captain Potter and First Mate Evans have me by the THROAT I'm not joking. I love these two so gd much I'm going to miss them 😭

4. no, i could never give you peace — Angst, Rated M, 4.5K

James blinks. “Are you breaking up with me, Evans?” he jokes softly, resting his hand on hers. It’s a joke, but her body tenses and it immediately puts him on edge. The silence that follows is excruciating.

“I’m not doing anything.” Her nails begin to tap on the mug again—a nervous habit that James spots immediately. “I just think we should have a conversation.”

This was my first fic to publish when I got back to writing last year, and I'm still so, so pleased with it.

5. Echoes of a Love Lived — Microfic Collection, Rated T, 14.5 K

A collection of unconnected ficlets for Jilytober 2022 based on the 31 @jilytoberfest prompts.

I had so much fun challenging myself for this collection, and I loved being able to switch between angst and fluff at the drop of a hat.
