Standing still

He was standing in front of him. Standing still. They were talking to each other at the bottom of a spiral staircase inside a bar which had been a bordello. The bar now stood across from New York University student housing. As they looked at each other, trust fund kids snorted coke across the street before heading out to explore the city that was their playground.

This would be the last time they spoke. It was 2001. They were both 25 and lost. James would disappear into the ether. They had once driven to North Carolina together, a year earlier, in a blizzard. James hadn't stopped speaking for the entire 9 hours. He'd known something was wrong but he hadn't asked.

James was working in finance, doing something on Wall Street, following the dragon. The American and New York City obsession with wealth. With more. He looked like he hadn't been sleeping. The furniture around them was different shades of red, in keeping with the former bordello theme. The music was instrumental rap.

They spoke about choices. James called him a contrarian. He was right. There was no rhyme or reason to his anger. It was a sickness that he did nothing to overcome. James and he had roomed together in junior year of college. Then James transferred to Villanova. Once, he'd gone with some other Fordham friends to visit James. They'd been to a frat house. It was depressing and dark and the frat boys were idiots.

When James disappeared, he'd scoured the internet for any information. Someone had scrubbed Google. There was nothing on social media. James had grown up in Bogota, New Jersey, but he wasn't going to go to his childhood home and ask what had happened to his friend.

Back at Madame X, in 2001, they were standing still. They were still there.

Se graduó en 1911 en Ohio, especializándose en Física, Matemáticas, Lenguas extranjeras y Música, que eran disciplinas escasamente elegidas por una mujer. Se mudó a Texas, donde fue directora de música en una academia militar, y después catedrática del departamento de matemáticas en la escuela secundaria local. El 22/7/1918, un año después de entrar EEUU en la II GM, se alistó en la Marina, donde fue contratada para el nivel más alto en trabajo de oficina y recibió formación en tareas técnicas como identificación de huellas, ensamblado de proyectiles, telegrafía o estenografía… Trabajó para la sección de Codificación y Señales del Director de Comunicaciones Navales. Sus esfuerzos no se limitaron a los sistemas manuales, involucrándose en la naciente tecnología que se aplicaba para cifrar y descifrar. Al comienzo de su trabajo participó en el desarrollo de la CM una de las máquinas de la Marina Americana. En 1921, consiguió descifrar un mensaje enviado por una máquina en teoría inexpugnable, creada por #EdwardHebern. En 1923 abandonó la Marina para ser Consejera Técnica en la Hebern, compañía de codico eléctrico con la misión de mejorar la seguridad de la máquina. No consiguió que la máquina ofreciera una seguridad inexpugnable y la empresa quebró. Su trabajo en Hebern influiría en la tecnología rotor. Se reincorporó a la Marina (1924-1949). Descifró los códigos manuales de la Marina Japonesa, el Código del Libro Rojo en los años 20 y el Código del Libro Azul en los 30. En 1939, fue la primera en encontrar los primeros patrones numéricos del código JN25, lo que dio las claves para lograr descifrarlo por completo. El JN25 fue el código más complejo de los empleados por la Armada Imperial Japonesa. Este hito fue su contribución más importante al criptoanálisis y una de las razones que hicieron que en 1942 EEUU ganara la Batalla de Midway durante la II GM. Number 29 on my Queer Icons Pride Project is Artist John Singer Sargent Sargent was born 1856 in Florence, was an American artist considered the leading portrait painter of his generation. He created roughly 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings. He was trained in Paris before moving to London, living most of his life in Europe. He enjoyed international acclaim as a portrait painter. An early submission to the Paris Salon in the 1880s, his Portrait of Madame X, was intended to consolidate his position as a society painter in Paris, but instead resulted in scandal. During the next year following the scandal, Sargent departed for England where he continued a successful career as a portrait artist. From the beginning, Sargent's work is characterized by remarkable technical facility, particularly in his ability to draw with a brush, which in later years inspired admiration as well as criticism for a supposed superficiality. His commissioned works were consistent with the grand manner of portraiture, while his informal studies and landscape paintings displayed a familiarity with Impressionism. In later life Sargent expressed ambivalence about the restrictions of formal portrait work, and devoted much of his energy to mural painting. Sargent was a lifelong bachelor with a wide circle of friends including both men and women such as Oscar Wilde, whom he was neighbors with for several years. Biographers once portrayed him as staid and reticent. However, recent scholarship has speculated that he was a homosexual man, as he had devoted significant time to renderings of nude male figure studies. This view is based on statements by his friends and associations. Sargent influences me as an artist, I personally love that he would choose a section, typically the face and fully render it, and then give the illusion to the rest. Madame X is my personal favoritw.
