Robert Plant and John Paul Jones attend 'Roadies Raffle' Charity Event, Golden Lion Pub, Fulham, London, October 31, 1978.
Press: "Oh What A Great Night It Was"
It was a night they'll never forget in Fulham! All rock's lovliest stars showed up to present a glittering array of gold discs and album sets at London's top rock pub - the Golden Lion. It was a culmination of hugely successful Ad Lib - Golden Lion Roadies' Raffle - which ended collecting a terrific £816 cheque for the Evening News Toy for a Sick Child Fund.
Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant and John Paul Jones drove down from Birmingham to be there. Ex-Wings star Jimmy McCulloch interrupted rehearsals with his new band to hand over some of his priceless gold albums.
And others who sipped pints and joked with the winners included Yes' Alan White, ex-Animal Eric Burdon, Manfred Mann's Chris Thompson and Mitch Mitchell.
Disc Jockey Mike Quinn compered and Chas & Dave plays a sizzling set. A million thanks to you all!

“do wah diddy diddy” -> manfred mann + “ms. new booty” -> bubba sparxxx
“I have some, um. Eclectic tastes.” Stevie’s words are accompanied by that bubbly schick-schick-schick sound it makes when you scroll through music. “I can spare you, if you want, maybe put on this Top 40 playlist instead?”
“Absolutely not. What’s eclectic? I mean, I know what it means,” Milo clarifies as he turns down one of the backroads, “but give me an example.”
“Oh, well. Uh. One time one of my playlists shuffled from ‘Do Wah Diddy Diddy’ to ‘Ms. New Booty’? I think that’s the most informative thing I could tell you.”
Milo tries to whistle, but it pretty quickly tapers off into a laugh. “What playlist is that?”
“Bangers.”
“Bangers.”
“Yeah. Y’know.” She shrugs, taps her screen. “Songs that bang.”

“The King of Melody,” Burt Bacharach Dead at 94
Burt Bacharach, the composer of more than 50 top-40 hits and songwriting partner of and collaborator with Hal David, Dionne Warwick, Elvis Costello and others, has died at 94 of natural causes.
The Associated Press first reported the news.
“Farewell genius,” Simply Red tweeted.
Hailed by Dave Davies as “probably one of the most influential songwriters of our time,” Bacharach, whose motto was “never be ashamed to write a melody that people remember,” is said to have composed more than 1,000 songs including “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” “What the World Needs Now” and “What’s New, Pussycat?”
“He was a great inspiration,” Davies said.
Bacharach in 2020 cut Blue Umbrella with Nashville singer/songwriter Daniel Tashian, causing Sawyer Brown to marvel at the composer’s triumph of “creating timeless songs” into his 90s.
“Thank you, Burt Bacharach, for all those wonderful traveling companions,” Brown wrote on Facebook, recounting the songwriter’s work with Warwick, which included 20 top-40 hits.
Bacharach’s songs were also recorded by the Beatles, the Fifth Dimension, Manfred Mann, Dusty Springfield, Christopher Cross, Roberta Flack and others. He and Costello released Painted from Memory in 1998.
“I’ll always think of Burt Bacharach as the King of Melody,” Stephen Bishop said. “His songs are timeless.”

"I couldn't sound like anyone. The only person I sort of vaguely got near [to sounding like] was Jimmy Reed, and that's because Jimmy Reed played in what today is called 'first position' - in other words, you play a C harp in C. And it was Brian Jones [from The Rolling Stones] who said to me, 'You're doing that all wrong!' And I said 'What do you mean?' He then said, 'You tried to play the Blues on a C harp in the key of C. If you want to play the Blues on a C harp, choose the key of G' or 'if you want to play the Blues in C, get an F harp'. It was like Brian opened the gates to a magic garden. Cross Harp - as we called it in those days."
