Maria Teresa de Filippis was a pioneer driver for women in Formula One Grand Prix. She made history as the first woman driver ever to qualify for a Formula One race at the Belgium Grand Prix in 1958. Formula One World Championship was a mere 8 years old when Maria made history and it would be almost 30 years before female driver would find herself on the starting grid. In 1975, Lella Lombardi, another Italian, finished 6th in the Spanish Grand Prix.

Maria Teresa de Filippis was born in Naples in 1926 and decided to enter the world of motor racing almost as a challenge from her two older brothers. Nicknamed “il pilotino” by her peers because of her small stature, di Filippis was only 22 years old when she sat behind the wheel of her Fiat topolino for what would be the first of many races. Her two brothers had challenged her to a race, convinced that she could not drive as fast as a man. In 1948 on the Salerno-Cava dei Tirreni 10 km course, where she traversed the winding roads of her native Italy, she decisively won, thumbing her nose at Antonio and Guiseppe, her older brothers and the other male drivers.

That very first victory ignited her passion for racing and in the following year she triumphed in several competitions in the 750cc category and came in second in the Italian Sports Championship. So impressed were they that Maserati, the famed sports car makers, brought it in as an in-house driver.

For 1953 – 1954 she moved on to an Osca 1100 cc in which she won the 12 Hours of Pescara, the Trullo d’Oro, the Catania-Etna, and the circuits of Caserta and Syracuse. Her victory in the Catania-Etna was done in record time, a speed record that remained undefeated for the next three years. 1955 was the year Maria Teresa de Filippis transitioned to a Maserati 2000 A6GCS where she continued to confound expectations and prejudices and garner immense respect from other male drivers. The victories followed one another and at the Grand Prix of Naples in 1956, she started in last position and sneaked in to finish in second place in Italian Sports Championship.

Eventually an invitation to race in Formula One. She made her debut at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit at the wheel of Manuel Fangio’s Maserati 250F, crowned champion the previous year. Fangio and de Filippis were close and she considered him her big brother. Fangio for his part was effusive about the skill and courage of the diminutive Italian woman. He said to her once, jokingly but also as a nod to her driving ability, “tu vai troppo veloce per le possibilità della tua macchina!” (you go too fast for your car's capabilities!)

She tried and failed three times - including the Monaco Grand Prix - to qualify for the grid. Each time she narrowly lost out. But finally her chance came at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit of the Belgian Grand Prix in June 1958. She qualified in 19th place and in a time that was almost 34 seconds slower than Ton Brooks’ pole position. She came in 10th (and last place) and just by finishing she had made history. It was the prove to be her only race finish in the four Grand Prix she competed in.

At the French Grand Prix in 1958 controversy arose when she was forbidden to race by the race director, following the death the day before of Frenchwoman Annie Bousquet at the 12 Hours of Reims race. The race director dismissed the objections of both Maserati and de Filippis by declaring that “the only helmet a woman should wear is the hairdresser’s helmet.”

Despite fighting prejudice from race organisers (with the exception of Bernie Ecclestone with whom she shared a warm life long friendship), amongst the drivers she commanded total respect. In this Golden Age of racing, racing sports cars at such incredible speeds was a death trap and safety measures that today are taken for granted were simply not there. It was her courage and determination in driving age she once described as both cruel and beautiful. The death of her friend and driver Jean Behra, Porsche team leader in 1959 in a secondary race at the German Grand Prix, left a profound mark on her. It was one death too many. Other deaths were to follow on the track in the years to come, and perhaps none as traumatic as the great three time world champion, Jim Clark, in 1968.

Maria felt she had pushed the limits of her own luck on the track that she called “corsa contro la morte” (race against death). She promptly retired from professional racing after Behra’s death. She decided to settle down and start a family. She married an Austrian chemist and focused on her family. She stayed away from all racing until she gingerly stepped back in 1979 when Maria joined the International Club of Former F1 Grand Prix Drivers. In 1997 she was appointed Vice-President. In 2004, she also went on to become a founding member of the Maserati Club, eventually become its chairperson. For the most part though she avoided the public glare until she was almost forgotten. She was 89 years old when she died in 2018 surrounded by family.

Her story is one of courage, tenacity, and audacity. There is no better role model for women than Maria Teresa de Filippis especially in male dominated fields such as Formula One racing but also other tough professions.

It was one of my greatest honours of my life to have met her as a little girl through my grandfather with whom she shared a friendship. She was a living inspiration as I sought my goal to fly combat helicopters later in life. I had a personalised note from her that I had stuck inside my locker door at Sandhurst as a source of motivation and determination to succeed. I sent her a card with a picture of me after I qualified as a trained combat pilot and got my ‘wings’.

Articles either criticising her every move or stating their unwavering support for her.

She read each and every article published about the news — eager to know how the world would react.A part of her already made peace with the reality that there would be people reacting terribly towards the news ; let it be a man or woman.The men simply viewed her inferior to the other drivers,commenting on how her biological capabilities were “leagues away” from the other nineteen…..just because of what was between her legs.The women on the other hand were possesive…thinking she would steal away their beloved drivers because she definetly was the only female presence on the paddock.

It was humorous really,how a mere woman wanting her career to align with motorsports could cause such an uprise of reactions among everyone.

Her eyes scanned over the headlines again and again.Laughing at the things they had to say.She found the articles scrutinising her every move amusing — it was ironic how they perceived her as ‘unworthy’ of a seat.

Yet,she did beat everyone else in Formula 2 in terms of points…claiming her place as the champion.

Becoming the champion of Formula 2 was a tough fight.She had stayed there for a few years,giving it her all to stand above all with victory — and she did in the end.Did they hate her because she was victorious? Or was it because she had rightfully earned her place among the others? She would never know..not like she wanted to anyway.

“You haven’t even had your debut,yet you’re causing an uproar on the internet” he hummed in amusement standing next to her while he observed her reading the words on her phone.His british accent was hard to miss as she chuckled along with him.“I think it’s admirable” Alex added on with his voice filled with sincerity.A bashful smile made its way on her face,flattered and touched by his words.

“That makes me a little more hungry to prove to everyone I belong here” she admitted with a chuckle.She was eternally grateful for the little support she had coming from him and her family…though she was more discreet when it came to the family part.He placed a hand on her shoulder squeezing it softly.

“You will.” he nodded his head,patting her back before making his way to the car.Her nerves buzzed with excitement ; her last race as a reserve driver.A few more months,and that seat would be hers.She felt remorseful for Latifi because he lost his seat…but it would be her turn to take on the mantle now.She would take his place since he didn’t perform.

That was Formula 1.

A sport dependant on results.If you didn’t deliver, it was best to kiss your seat goodbye.She could only cross her fingers and pray the 2023 season was kind to her.She needed the team to see her results….see her effort.There was no way she worked her ass off just to quit now.Thankfully,James Vowles was there to see her worth.She had caught his eye — he was watching her races in Formula 2,undoubtedly raising his expectations with the performance she served on the track.

It was only a matter of time until she was offered a seat,he was unwilling to let such talent go to waste.

Williams.

Not her first choice for a team when it came to making her debut but — she was eternally grateful she had a seat regardless.It was also a step closer to Mercedes….even if she didn’t want aim to race with them.

Not when he would be there.

BAHRAIN 23’ : THURSDAY.

“How do you feel about making your Formula 1 debut this Sunday?” the reporter asked curiously as he jotted down notes in his journal.The two RedBull drivers on her left and right turned their heads to observe her,eager to know what she had to say.

“It’s definitely nerve wracking — I’m feeling quite nervous to be honest” she admitted with a shy smile.Max and Checo chuckled softly at her words,the 2-time world champion nodding in understanding on how she would feel.

“But…I feel excited as well.I want to prove to everyone that I deserve to be here just as much as the others.With Williams and Alex supporting me,I hope I can do exactly that” she finished her sentence,putting down the mic as fans clapped at her answer.It was diplomatic ; she was biting her tongue and choosing not to express her true feelings.

If she had the right to be a 100% honest there would be a lot more of….colourful words being spoken.

The fans were definetly a plot twist.Hearing them cheer for her was heartwarming.She still did recieve her fair share of hate,but she would “focus on the positives” — just like dad advised.He was all the wiser when it came to motorsports anyway.

”Well Y/N,I hope the season treats you well.You’ve already made a name for yourself so I’m sure all will go smoothly”the reporter replied to her,the girl smiling bashfully and thanking him for his kind wishes.

The press conference ended after a few more questions being thrown here and there.She walked over to the managers with a pep to her step while maintaining the calm expression on her face….even if her heart felt like it was about to burst.Alex stood there as well with small smile gracing his face.Her first press conference as a Formula 1 Driver! It was a milestone to her.

“You did amazing” Thea — her newly appointed PR Manager said with a smile.She chuckled softly,taking the water bottle she was offered with for a sip.Her heart screamed with excitement,adrenaline coursing through her veins even if it was only Thursday.There were three more days for her to impress everyone.

She shaked off her train of thoughts with a smile.Opening her mouth,she answered with a cheeky response.

“I hope I can do the same on-track then”

She’s married to the owner and general manager of Mercedes team, Toto Wolff, and has three kids with him: Soren (age 8 as of 2024), Tia (age 5), and Adelmo (age 2). Her company does not fully associate with the FiA as to avoid rumours of bias and corruption within the Formula Racing community. Her net worth increased to 5.5 billion after her company sales skyrocketed.

Has a net worth of $164.1 million as of 2024.

SYLVIE EDSON FORD-VERSTAPPEN/HEARTH: 27 as of 2024. Executive Director of Red Bull Racing’s non-profitable kids/charity programs. Could have been F1’s first female driver since Maria Teresa de Filippis had it been for her expulsion in the academy. Known for her slight dislike for Christian Horner. Max Verstappen’s demise. Works hard alongside Charlotte to keep Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris in line instead of wandering off. Had to leave from the 2024 season early due to her pregnancy. She’s currently dating Charles Leclerc and has two kids with him: a set of twins named Hervé and Jules Leclerc. Net worth is currently sitting at $91.2 million.

AMARA LOUISE EDMUNSON: Aimee’s mother. Businesswoman and owner of several businesses all across the globe - including luxury stores such as Harrods and Selfridges. She raised Aimee alongside Blanche and Aimee’s half-sisters. Much like a family, Amara would take the four as a whole when it comes to trips and thinks that Julius Hearth is a sad excuse of a father. Amara is Tilly, Stevie and Sylvie’s second mother.

BLANCHE CHRISTIE FORD (formerly Hearth): the youngest daughter of William Clay Ford Sr. and the mother of the first three sisters. Owns 30% of Ford Motor Company but doesn’t act as an executive chairman. She, much like Amara, is a grandmother to Soren, Tia, Adelmo, Lottie and the Leclerc twins and would rather be a stay at home Nan to them. Amara and Blanche co-parented for the four and spent nights drinking wine whenever the girls were out. Some had assumed that the two were “very good friends” but who were they to judge or assume? 

TRISH ALONSO: Is a professional wrestler who was caught up in the F1 and WWE drama back in 2000s because of a certain Fernando Alonso. Now has kids with the said man.

She is considered a “Crazy Rich Asian” for growing up with money and her endless collection of Hermes bags that she seemed to treat as a fragile canvas. After years of trying and failing, she and Sebastian adopted a son named Kimuel, who was immediately addressed in the grid as Kimi Vettel. Some say that Kimi is a quieter version of Sebastian for his meekness and the sudden switch to cheekiness.

BARBARA ELISANDRA BLANCO: 25 as of 2024. Also known as Barbie. She happened to be 15 when Bel and Seb took her in as their foster child and continued to raise her as their own even after she turned 18. She moved to Switzerland with the Vettels after she was guaranteed a better life and opportunity to become a chef. She’s currently enrolled to study in Cesar Ritz College in Le Bouveret - which is a short drive every day so that she’ll have more chances to babysit Kimi, her two year old toddler adoptive sibling. Everyone thinks that she is dating Mick Schumacher, who would often make a visit to the Vettels home whenever he gets the chance. Mick obviously likes her, but does she?

you can't imagine the RELIEF that it is to write this post. it's been a year long journey, but we're here at last, settling this once and for all. we have had six gruesome rounds and now it's time to find out who is the hottest formula one driver of all time. are you ready? the answers are behind the cut!

of course, before we found out who won, we need to know who is going to complete the Tournament Podium! this match was, for many, the de facto finale as the semifinals were brutal and any of the four guys that competed in them deserved to make it to the top. their perfomance throughout the tournament have been, overall, stellar and we can't overlook them, so let's take a quick peek, shall we?

lewis hamilton's road to hotness irl was a sight to see. a stunner since he got into F1, he actually took the time to self-care and cultivate his hotness until he got to his current form - and it paid off! as his career grew in size, he started to experiment with working out, tattoos and fashion to create one of the ultimate dreamboats in F1 history, which is why him missing out on the finals was such a major upset. still, the streets have never forgotten sir lulu, as you can see from his path to now:

a brutal semifinal might have put a dent on an otherwise stellar record, but he can still redeem himself... or can he? let's asses his adversary:

jenson button is a product of his time and a very good one while we're at it. a heartbreaker in the 00s/10s era of formula 1, he was able to adapt his hotness to his environment: cute rookie at williams, playboy at benetton, sex god at honda/brawn and taken, but still available at mclaren - there was a jenson for any taste! since he's left f1, he entered his dilf era that has been appreciated thanks to his instagram efforts, and that aligned with the memories of yesterday makes for a very good record in the tournament:

Lewis Hamilton!!!! as much as JB was a fierce competitor, 70,3 % of you made sure that Sir Lewis left the tournament on a high note! congrats to lewis and congrats to jenson, you are part of Hottie F1 History!

straight out of ferrari 2019, the sebchal rivalry shook the core of the tournament. much like lewis and jenson, seb and charles also had stellar performances that are worthy of revisiting, so let's look at them!

seb is a particular case of hotness because he has had his ups and downs, aesthetic wise. he arrived in formula 1 baby faced with a cheeky sense of humour, and he transformed into a HOT BASTARD during his red bull domination era - not without trying to annihilate his hair by bleaching it, unlocking conflicting feelings in the hearts of many seblrinas. in Ferrari, the greatest formula 1 team of all time, he also experimented with many looks and regained his reputation as a "non-bastard", and now, in aston martin, he's dabbling in the abbey road beatles look. no matter what, always a hottie, and this translates in his performance here:

wow. it will have to take some big brass to beat this!

aaahhhh, il predestinato. charles hasn't been that long in formula 1 compared to his adversary, but what sets him apart is his consistency. his look barely changed from his year at alfa romeo to nowadays, only getting slightly worse in fashion. still, the face card is never declined and it led him to become one of the faces of giorgio armani. the body card doesn't decline either as his gf often makes a point of posting just to taunt us that can't get close enough to enter his bone radar. he also has the incredible advantage of being talented at his job and the obvious Ferrari Tax that allows him to wear red every race, which creates a lethal combination of a hottie against everyone that stood against him so far:

Coco was excelling in a kart.

Almost every single race was won; and if it wasn’t won she was standing on the podium.

Jules loved watching his little sister participate in the sport that meant so much to his family.

The boy was currently in Formula Renault 2.0, and was on track to winning the championship.

Coco would not be more proud of her older brother.

At school, the only thing she talked about was how her brother was in Formula Renault 2.0, and how he was so close to winning the championship.

She never failed to bring up Charles either.

“Saviez-vous que le grand frère d'Arthur vient de remporter un titre à Monaco did you know that Arthur’s big brother just won a title in Monaco?” Coco bragged as she sat at a table in school, Arthur sat next to her.

“Why do you care about cars so much?” A kid asked, and Coco and Arthur looked at each other with smirks on their faces.

“Because we’re going to be Formula One drivers some day.”

Coco was dead-set on being a Formula One driver.

She had no other backup plan.

She also knew that she wanted to drive for Ferrari.

Either next to her brother, Charles, or Arthur.

“Jules, are you going to race for Ferrari?” The young girl asked her brother one night as he was tucking her in.

“I hope so, mon ange my Angel.” He said as he placed her Ferrari themed teddy bear on her chest.

“When I race for Ferrari I want to either race next to you, Charles, or Arthur!” She smiled. “And I want to be world champion!”

Jules was always far too nice and loving to his little sister, and just let her dream when it came to being an F1 driver.

He knew it would be harder for her compared to Charles or Arthur simply because of her gender, and he really wished it didn’t have to be that way.

The young girl had posters of her F1 idols on the walls.

Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, Niki Lauda, and most importantly, Maria Teresa de Filippis.

Maria Teresa was an Italian racing driver, and the first woman to race in an F1 World Championship.

She scored no championship points, but Coco still aspired to be like her.

“Jules, je veux etre comme elle I want to be like her.” Coco smiled at the poster of Maria Teresa that was above her dresser.

“I know you do, Coco.” Jules smiled. “You’ve got to go to bed to be rested for our important day tomorrow.”

Coco snuggled up into her bed and prepared for Jules to sing to her.

“Close your eyes, have no fear. The monsters gone, he’s on the run, and your brothers here.” Jules softly sang as Coco closed her eyes. “Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, girl.”

Coco and Arthur were almost 7 years old, and were sat in the Leclercs living room.

Arthur had seemed sad for the entire day, and Coco wouldn’t seem to figure out why.

“Arthur, are you okay?” She asked him once again as they sat on the couch next to each other.

“I have to quit racing.” He pouted and her jaw dropped.

“What?” She gasped.

“My parents can’t afford both Charles and I.” He huffed. “They picked him over me.”

“I cannot believe this!” The young girl threw up her hands. “My family can pay for you, I’m sure of it!”

“No, Coco, it’s okay, really.” Arthur protested. “Just a bit bummed, is all.”

The girl closed her mouth and looked at her “twin” feeling the sadness radiating off of him.

“I’m sorry, Arthur.” She pouted with him, leaning forward and giving him a hug. “I’ll win all my races just for you now.”

“Thank you.” He smiled.

And that’s exactly what Coco did.

Every. Single. Race.

The collection of trophies in the Bianchi household was enormous.

Jules had just won the 2007 Formula Renault 2.0 championship, and Coco had just won her karting championship, so the display case was well furnished.

Charles had been watching Coco dominate the track.

He had accompanied the Bianchis to every race he could attend, and would cheer loudly for the girl when she inevitably crossed the line in P1.

He was there for her championship deciding race as well, and cheered as loud (if not louder) than Jules.

“TU L'AS FAIT! you did it!” Charles screamed as Coco came barrelling off of the podium and into the arms of her brother.

“JE L'AI FAIT! i did it!” She screamed, pumping her fist and her trophy in the air.

Her father carefully took the trophy from her hands since since he didn’t trust that she wouldn’t break it.

After hugging Jules for a significant amount of time, Coco moved onto Charles.

She hugged him like her life depended on it, squeezing him as the almost 10 year old lifted her off of the ground.

A loud laugh came out of her mouth, nothing but joy radiating from the group.

After Charles, she moved into Arthur.

“For you.” She smiled, hugging him.

“For us.” He smiled back.

As the years passed by, Cocos talent shocked every one she came in contact with.

Including the big guys.
