Ace soulmate AU

for full disclosure, this is (in writing terms) pretty old, and it might get scrapped and rewritten for an entirely different fandom if i ever run into one for which it fits well, but it’s still hanging in there as is for now because. well, soulmate AUs mostly aren’t my cup of tea, but sometimes i think about the way they’re often executed by just kind of dropping soulmate marks into essentially the world we already have, and the vaguely horror-ish experience that could be from an asexual (or aromantic!) perspective. oh, you’re not even a latebloomer, you’re just really romantic and Waiting For The One! then it will all say click, and suddenly the whole idea of attraction will magically make sense! that kind of thing, but suddenly supercharged by the fact that there actually IS such a thing as a soulmate.

(but then there’s probably also, internally, that niggling doubt - what if meeting your soulmate doesn’t make it say click? what if it still doesn’t make sense? what if you meet your soulmate and they naturally expect things that everyone seems to expect from their soulmate but that you don’t want to give them, can’t give them, won’t be giving them - what if there’s this One Perfect Person for you, but it turns out you’re too broken to make it work? essentially i think that any universe with our current (deep lack of) societal awareness of asexuality/aromanticism But Add In Soulmarks would be. probably worse. that would probably really fuck certain people up Even More.)

so, with all of that set up, the idea here is pretty much to explore all of that, but with the twist that both parts of this soulmate couple are struggling with the same thing. so steve and danny meet in steve’s dad’s garage, like in canon (again, this is kind of old writing):

Danny enters the house completely unsuspecting. When he hears noises from the garage he shifts into high alert, but that still doesn’t prepare him for what happens next – it’s a blur, they yell at each other over their guns and suddenly something is burning in the crook of Danny’s right elbow, and for a dizzying moment he thinks he’s been shot, even though that’s happened to him before and it’s never been anything like this.

Then he realizes why a pain in that spot makes his heart beat faster, and he sees the other guy’s face twist and his jaw clench even while his aim never wavers, and Danny knows.

Everyone wants to meet their soulmate. By all rights, he should be thrilled. Mostly he feels so nauseous he might throw up, and absolutely determined not to show any of it.

Gripping his weapon tight, he stares down the barrel still pointed at him. This is ridiculous. “Put your gun down,”  he snaps. “It’s not like we’re going to shoot each other now.”

The guy that claims to be Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett just frowns deeper. “You put your gun down. How do I know my soulmate isn’t part of some gang? How do I know you didn’t kill my father?”

he figures out danny didn’t kill his dad pretty soon, of course. and then solving the case goes very quickly, they work together really well, they DO click (just not like that), danny has very conflicted feelings about it and he still hits steve for being an asshole (but even that is just a bonding moment, really, because they’re them). after the case, the governor is like, you guys should take a few days off and get to know each other, wink wink nudge nudge, so they do take those days off, both of them with a heavy heart about how this will play out, and neither of them wants to be someone who meets their soulmate only to immediately reject them, so they keep awkwardly shuffling towards what they think is supposed to happen here, and then finding ways to distract themselves for another five minutes:

“Do you want to...” Steve says, and his sentence trails off suggestively. It’s a surprise when he finishes it at all, and it’s a bigger surprise when he says, “Have a drink?”

“It’s two in the afternoon.” Danny squints at Steve’s perfect Navy man outside. “Are you a functioning alcoholic?” That’d be just his luck.

“Coffee,” Steve says, hastily. “Coffee is a drink. You like coffee, right?”

Danny trails Steve while Steve hurries into the kitchen. “If this relationship is going to work, you can’t ask me that ever again. Do I like coffee? Like that’s a question where no is a viable answer.”

Steve, working a coffee machine that thankfully looks fairly decent, doesn’t seem cowed by Danny’s bluster. The opposite – he grins. It’s sudden and amused and goddamn breathtaking, shit. “You’re such an asshole,” he says. He sounds a little bit delighted.

“Glad I amuse you,” Danny snipes back, even though he is, in fact, glad.

and then at some point they finally figure each other out, and all that heavy weight hanging over them drops away, and they can actually be glad to have found each other without any caveats. when they eventually get back to work and get the inevitable “you look like you didn’t get much sleep ;)” comments, it’s true, they really didn’t, but it’s because danny was teaching steve how to make pasta from scratch in the middle of the night.

this one is just a little fluffy domestic thing! i haven’t fully decided if this is established relationship or they’re still very oblivious, but eddie is cleaning up the kitchen when buck returns from reading chris a bedtime story, and buck goes “would you still love me if i was a frog?” and understandably eddie is pretty ??? about this at first:

“Are you aware you’re not making any sense?”

“It just seems really horrible to me, having a witch turn you into a frog. Not because of, like, having to eat flies-”

“Oh no, of course not,” Eddie agrees, because apparently they’re pretending this is a serious topic.

Buck gives him a look that says he knows what Eddie is doing, and he doesn’t appreciate it. “C’mon, man, I just mean- Something that’s totally out of your control happens and suddenly none of your friends or family recognize you. You sit there, and you’re trying to tell them who you are, but you can’t make them understand. Doesn’t that scare you?”

The answer is not really, because it’s too obviously a fantasy children’s story for Eddie to be able to take it that heavily, but something still says click. It’s probably the Eddie feels like a fool switch. “It scares you, huh?”

“To death,” Buck admits. “Why would anyone even put that in a book meant to be read before sleep? What if Chris has a nightmare?”

Eddie feels a little tug on his heartstrings - the ones that tell him hey, Buck adores your kid. “He’ll be fine.”

and then it’s just. [more fluff here].

I am not at all surprised that my Teen Wolf stories top the list, because that fandom is ridiculously loyal—but check it out, #1 is a RAREPAIR, Danny/Stiles!

I will say technically #2, a Sterek fantasy oneshot, has had more kudos because it was taken down in 2015 for including quotes of too many Beatles lyrics. The podfic also has its own following!

I am very proud of #3, set during the Civil War; that was a big stretch, but a fun one to write.

#4 is our first Glee story, and that's a collab with someone who's even more prolific than I am (and a much better writer).

#5 is the sequel to #1 but was only recently completed.

#6, another Glee story, is the first in a trilogy I'm very proud of, with lots of theater references and canon compliance for most of the story.

#7 is my first McDanno fic, but really hit a chord in the H50 fandom. I worked very hard to get Danny's character voice right, and it was satisfying to know I was able to achieve that.

#8 is another Teen Wolf rarepair, this time with a real horror backdrop, and that was also a good challenge for me, as I love horror fiction but had never written it.

#9 is a collab with one of my dearest friends and cowriters, @knittycat99. We always meant to continue writing the next part of the story, but life does intervene!

#10 is the first in a very adorable Puckurt fluff series.

10 of my fics I wish people would read:

The French Drop is based on the heist film Sneakers from 1992. It stars Robert Redford and Ben Kingsley. God, I love this movie, and I absolutely had to write this story, because they needed a happy ending, or as close to a happy ending as I could give them.

Auld Acquaintance is a collaborative D/s Puckurt written by myself and @beshrew-my-very-heart. It was a challenge to ourselves to see if we could write something short and complete, and we did! (Of course, we are now writing the much, much longer sequels.)

Dancing Through the Same Noise is a Glee Puckurt-to-Fuckurt patterned after an episode of How I Met Your Mother. It started light and funny and quickly got very serious. It has the advantage of having beautiful art (it was so beautiful that I purchased the original watercolored pen-and-ink sketch from the artist and had it shipped across the world to me).

So Tyrannous and Rough in Proof and A Trivial Comedy for Serious People are parts #2 and #3 of the These Magic Changes Puckurt series. I finished the series fairly recently, but I hope more Glee readers will go back and reread the whole thing, because I think it really hangs together very well.

Blue Rubber Band is a Puck-focused Puckurt AU one-shot based on a Regina Spektor song. It's about drug addiction and homelessnes, but is ultimately a hopeful story. There is also a podfic.

Gold Mine is a Glee Dave/Puck what-if story that is unbelievably sweet, sexy, and romantic—and monogamous and vanilla! I am really fond of it, mostly because canon totally supports this pairing and I think they would have been great together.

While We Got the Chance to Say is part of the enormous Glee Donutverse, but I think can be read as a stand-alone pretty well. It's a BDSM-flavored polyam love story focusing on Kurt and Adam Lambert (no, not Elliott Gilbert!). If you've ever wondered about the Donutverse and you would like to give it a try, this is a very glittery introduction.

Family First is a Glee Kurtofsky futurefic one-shot which I wrote during the two days of the 2020 election. It does deal with cancer and contains minor character death, but Dave's character arc centers around his friendship with Finn and the whole Hudson-Hummel family.

the soul slakes its thirst in fearless draught is a Finn/Dave/Kurt futurefic patterned after Cyrano DeBergerac. It is very romantic, with a smutty followup chapter.

Lucky Connection is a Dave/Finn story based on a Hallmark movie, so you can imagine just how sweet and romantic it is. There is zero smut, but a happy ending.

BONUS: the only fanvid I have ever made was completed a few weeks before Cory Monteith's untimely passing, so it is somewhat bittersweet, but I am still very proud of it.

How do you think stoncy + robin poly dynamic would look like? ♥

Oh, what a good question!

I could see it starting a lot of different ways, but let's start off with stoncy established. Steve becomes platonic soulmates with Robin, so she starts hanging out with him, Nancy, and Jonathan all the time.

Jonathan and Robin would become close friends. I feel like Jonathan could be the person Robin would hang out with when she wants her brain to just slow down and mellow out for a little while. They would bond over movies, in particular. Both of them are prone to anxiety and catastrophizing, but Jonathan is good at heading it off in other people (his mom, Will), so I think he'd be a stabilizing force for Robin. Robin, on the other hand, would be good at joking in a kind way and using hyperbole to help Jonathan realize that he's blowing things out of proportion.

And then there's Nancy. I feel like her observation of Jonathan and Steve's relationship with each other could give her a framework for understanding how her feelings for Robin are growing less platonic over time. I think it would also take Nancy a long time to admit these feelings to anyone other than herself. Like, she already has Jonathan and Steve. Shouldn't they be enough for her? But she's crushing hard on Robin and dying inside every time Robin talks about another girl.

Steve would've figured out pretty early on that Robin has a crush on Nancy, but Jonathan would have been the one to notice Nancy's crush on Robin. They would tell each other about their respective observations, and then do whatever shenanigans they could to get Nancy and Robin out on a date together.

Eventually they would all live together, Robin and Nancy in one bedroom, Steve and Jonathan in the other, but Nancy ends up sleeping in whichever bed she ends up in for the night. Pretty often Steve ends up sleeping (platonically) in Robin's bed, because he snores and Robin's the only one who can sleep through it and doesn't end up kicking him half the night to get him to stop.

'I'd be alone on this island', from the first scene that touches on how deeply lonely Danny feels in Hawai'i, it's clear Steve vows that it will never be the case, that Danny won't have to solve his personal problems alone. Danny is bracing himself to brave the unruly waters on his own but Steve shows up for him every time.

When Danny is looking into an uncertain future, Steve is always looking at Danny in his quiet intensity, firm and certain that he will be there for him, they are each other's Sure Thing. 'I may not carry your burden, but I will carry you'. Danny once told Steve that there's no 'my own' in their relationship so that 'your problems become my problems', Steve shows him that it goes both ways.

@loudhaoleinatie is my (fandom)wifey!!! I made Steve because of them actually! :D They way they wrote Danny was just so freaking amazing and talented, and so goddamn sexy! AND they had different versions of him! I was like :O WOW!

Their Ascarto is sooooooo good! In a toxic, twisted, best kind of way! Their mun is just so freaking amazing and they’ve made me a better writer! 

The balance between our characters is amazing, sometimes it feels like we’re psychically connected, they’ve gotten me through some tough times! Thinking about the combo of our muses is honestly so much fun! 

Sometimes, for whatever reason, some people aren’t into stepping outside certain zones or do AUs that differ too much away from their character’s norm. But with them!??! Duuuuuuude! It’s amazing how many different angles we can play with! One of the very first threads, maybe second thread, was one where a perp was a werewolf that bit Danny and so now we have McDanno trying to deal with werewolf stuff! It’s AMAZING! And that’s one of the examples and one of the many things I love about them. 

We can be, “Okay but what if...” “YES!” 

or

“I have this idea....” and boom! We’re talking it out and then there’s a starter! 

“Imagine them as/doesn’t this fit ___ and ___ perfectly?” and like, no judgment, even the most craziest ideas get treated with respect and love and I love them so much~ <3 <3
