1676 – Michiel de Ruyter, Date of Death
Tumblr media
Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter (IPA: [miˈxil ˈaːdrijaːnˌsoːn də ˈrœytər]; 24 March 1607 – 29 April 1676) was a Dutch admiral. His achievements with the Dutch Navy during the Anglo-Dutch Wars earned him the reputation as one of the most skilled naval commanders in history.
De Ruyter was named lieutenant admiral and commander of the Dutch fleet at the start of the Second Anglo-Dutch War in 1665, and in 1666 he won a hard-fought victory in the Four Days' Battle in the southern North Sea.
Continuing his fight against the French, De Ruyter was fatally wounded by a cannonball at the Battle of Augusta off Sicily in 1676, and died a week later in Syracuse. His body was brought back to Amsterdam, where he was accorded a state funeral and interred in the Nieuwe Kerk.

Watching a movie. Am I glossing over the fact that the costuming is atrocious and all over the place (read: centuries; also: full pleather outfits and modern beards), there is a carriage from the 1800s in the 1600s and the CGI is mediocre? Yes.
But the bastardised rigaudon that pretends to be a minuet by adding close-ups of the dancers' feet in a semblance of fourth position and some fancy hand flourishes is where I draw the line.
Not to speak of the actors absolutely lacking posture and flopping their arms about like two oversized geese flapping their wings.
Oh, and the music is some 10 years ahead of its time. Didn't know the Prince of Orange had a secret pre-release deal for the hottest tunes with Monsieur Jean-Baptiste Lully (what's more, the tune they picked for the dancers has featured in a movie before-- whoever cooked up this atrocious dance-scene just watched Le Roi Danse to figure out how to more or less convincingly fake what 17th century dancing in a court environment looks like).
And there's ANOTHER dance scene yet to come... Send help, please.

Posing by the Youngblood billboard in Times Square in 2018, Michael wore a bomber jacket by Newams, from their SS18 'Golden Ages / Black Pages' collection.
What you can't see here is the *death mask* of Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter on the back! (This Amsterdam-based label is fond of a historical reference or two in their designs.)

HI! I listen to this podcast called you're dead to me (highly recommend). Anyway, on it they interview an expert and a comedian about certain times or people in history. And at the end of each episode the expert can nerd out for three minutes about anything they want about history. How would you use your three minuets?
Oh that’s so hard for me…
My interests between art and archaeology are super different. I wouldn’t be able to choose…
Dutch baroque art? Dutch seafaring? How Michiel de Ruyter invented marines? Germanic myths? The Merseburg spells? Birds in Germanic lore? The 80 years war? The Anglo Dutch wars? Dress history? Historic hairstyles?
Help!
