Hogwarts Fashion During Hogwarts Legacy
A cheat-sheet for making your writing/art historically accurate, and some inspiration for your MC - women's addition.
Tumblr media
Victorian fashion was complicated, both in terms of the construction and the rules that dictated when certain garments could be worn. Age played an important role in what a person was permitted to wear, so lets break it down that way:
Younger Students (Roughly years 1-4)
Generally speaking, girls dressed in similar styles to their mothers, but with altered hemline lengths. Up until roughly 13-14 years old (exact ages were decided by the girl's family) her hemline would fall around the knee. At 14 it would be lowered to the middle of the shins.
At this age girls would wear dresses, and so you could suggest that Hogwarts uniforms for girls at this age would not consist of the shirt and skirt combo that MC and various NPCs wear.
Most schools in the 1890s did not have set uniforms, but instead girls were expected to wear an apron to protect their clothes from ink and chalk dust.
At this age it was still considered socially acceptable for girls to wear their hair down, or in more simple hairstyles like braids. Popular hair accessories included ribbons and straw hats.
Time for some examples:
Tumblr media
This is an example of a day dress (casual clothes) from 1893. Smocking (the embroidery technique used at the collar, waist and cuffs) was popular in young girls clothes.
Tumblr media
Another example of children in day dress. The girl on the far left is probably about 13-14, the older girl on the right is closer to 15.

Older Students (Roughly years 5-7)
Around the time that the MC joins at Hogwarts, she would, depending on her personal preferences, have kept her skirt at her mid shin or dropped the hem to her ankles. Around the age of 17, girls would be expected to fully let down their hems to the floor, signifying their shift to adulthood.
At this point dresses would become less popular during the day, and were replaced by blouses (complete with very large sleeves) and a skirt. Men's tailoring and sports clothes shaped women's fashion at the time, and greatly influenced what girls wore at this age.
Girls would also typically stop wearing their hair down during the day, resorting to simple up-dos instead.
The time at which each girl made these changes depended on her and her family. While some girls had no choice but to listen to their parents, often they were able to bargain for an extra few months if they so wished.
Tumblr media
An example of two girls around the age of 15 in very typical day outfits.
Tumblr media
A selection of school girls - those sitting are no older than 14, those standing are no older than 16.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the age of 15-16 girls would begin to attend more family functions and required new styles of clothes. These paintings show the same tea gown. These were made to be worn at home, never in public, when the family was hosted guests or a less formal dinner. They could be worn at all times of the day.
Day clothes for students who dressed as adults (17+):

A British Upper VI class (age 17-18) and some teachers in 1894. All girls now wear dresses with their hems on the ground, and hair tied up.
Tumblr media
Middle class girls fashion in the 1890s
Tumblr media
A Woman's sweater from 1895
Tumblr media
Walking outfit from 1894 - essentially a more substantial outfit for spending time outdoors.
Tumblr media
A more expensive version of a day outfit.
Tea gowns:
Generally identified by their loose fit, high neckline, and a train that falls from the shoulders. Additionally they may also be made with a large coat over the top. The shape was inspired by medieval fashion and so they're a good source of inspiration for the wizarding world imo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Evening gowns:
Worn for the most formal evening events, and generally expose more skin than day clothes. Staple accessories included fans, opera gloves, and (if you're that way inclined) tiaras were coming into popularity at this time.
Rule of thumb for all fashion at this time, the sleeves get largest in the middle of the decade, and shrink back down again towards the end.

Ch210, Where is F. O. L. Orphanage?
⚠️ long post ⚠️
I was discussing that question with @juxl25, and I think we came up with a good choice for its location.
The only information we know for sure is that it's in Norfolk, and that it's near a river. We also know Finny and Snake took a train to a nearby town and walked to the orphanage.
We also know there's a wind pump that drains water from the surrounding marshland. There are at least four major rivers in the area used for draining the marshes: Yare, Bure, Wensum, and Ouse.
Juxl25 suggested River Yare and the historic Red Mill (the wind pump) as the area but was looking at Manor House, which is farther away, in the village (proper) of Haddiscoe, Norfolk. After some digging around, I agree with River Yare and Red Mill/Langley Detached mill (originally called Langley detached windpump...
Tumblr media
...or Langley Detached drainage pump).
Tumblr media
They are in an area northeast of Haddiscoe village, called Haddiscoe Island (these days), thanks to a canal added to connect River Yare and River Waveney farther inland, creating an island of the area and making the marshland there more remote/less accessible.
Tumblr media
There's a historic farmhouse just east of River Yare, not far from Red Mill, called Raven Hall. And Raven Hall would be a premium location to have a secluded facility like F. O. L. Orphanage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's only one thing I don't like about the buildings shown for Raven Hall -- it's a bit farther from the drainage pump than I want it to be, and it's just a large farmhouse (almost 3000 sqft) and a long barn (almost 900 sqft). But there's a cool space just south of those buildings, which would be ideal for the main orphanage, as well as a spot for the stables/barn leading closer to the drainage pump, farther south. Here are two options for the placement of F. O. L.:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In each case, I've placed the stables to the west of the main house, as a small red rectangle (more or less), while the windpump was already marked by a red dot farther southwest. Looking at the bend of the river on Theo's image of a map of the place, the placement on the right (above) might be the better match. Then again, it could be exactly where Raven Hall is located. And Raven Hall, having been built in the 17th century (or at least 1700), is older than Red Mill (built in 1840).
Tumblr media
Too bad I can't see the placement of the windpump on his map, but I think it's somewhere behind the speech bubbles on the left side of the panel.
We see that the windpump at the orphanage has a low roof of some kind, and juxl25 explains that someone was probably living onsite just to maintain it full time. I did find at least one pic showing Red Mill with what could be the old maintenance shed/shelter, but it seemed to be on the wrong side. Who knows? I guess it depends on which way the sails are facing to catch the wind? But the low roof in the panel is probably just the top of some shed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh, and near St Olaves, there's a train station called Haddiscoe Station. They could have got off the train there and made their way north to the orphanage by foot. Or did they hitch a ride part of the way? I'll have to go back and check.
I'm still considering one other location, not far from there, but I won't post it unless further research looks more promising.
Hey... can you imagine if all this time... F. O. L. was just some place name reference... like "Farmhouse on Langley" (Marshes)?!?
Please let these kids break the windpump and flood the tunnels.... 🙏

Singing, dancing, and music surrounded this lady princess in her youth. She herself learned to dance, to play instruments, and to love the music of the 13 minstrels retained by Edward IV for entertaining at court festivals. The minstrels' trumpets, shawms, small pipes, and strings added a professional component to her early musical education and became a vital, ever-present part of Elizabeth of York's life. As queen, Elizabeth retained her own minstrels quite separate from those of Henry VII⎯and rewarded them generously. Her own children played the lute, virginal, clavichord, and organ, while she herself played the clavichord (and perhaps other instruments). Her son Henry VIII became renowned for his singing, dancing, and composing. ⎺ Elizabeth of York (Queenship and Power), Arlene Okerlund

Almost done my novel research, I just need to get to the terror and the (justified) trial and execution of Marie Antoinette and Louis le incompetent <- I’m not saying his number he doesn’t deserve that.

Ah yes, the French revolution the most divisive event in history, my beloved.
Also... Robespierre was a saint compared to feudalism, monarchy and what Louis (and every French monarch before him) was doing to Haiti.
Marie Antoinette’s execution (from a French Revolution pamphlet).
Marie Antoinette on the way to her execution (Francois Fleming 1887).

Hamilton + historical fiction
So... I saw Hamilton: an american musical for the 2nd time live and 4th time if you count the proshot, here’s a list of things I noticed as someone whose back to hyper fixating on the American revolution.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. Mostly accurate but simplified timeline. The timeline of events in Hamilton is mostly accurate (via the Ron Chernow biography) it is of course, historical fiction and historical fiction and should be taken as such, for example: Hamilton/Eliza courted for months and met when Eliza was aiding injured soldiers with her father Phillip Schuyler. Also Angelica was if anything a platonic relationship with mild flirting (and sometimes comma sexting) act 1 is actually more “simplified” then act 2.
2. The Culper ring gets one mention in the song Right Hand Man. “Spies on the inside / king’s men who might let some things slide.” Also I understand the line, “British Admiral Howe's got troops on the water, Thirty-two thousand troops in New York Harbor.” Now.
Tumblr media
3. I’m just assuming now Washington was a father figure to his aides to camp cause Alexander and Benjamin.
4. Parallels between Eliza, Angelica, Maria, Laurens & Phillip Hamilton.
5. One last time - it is historically a huge deal that George Washington stepped down.
6. Say no to this / helpless - repetition of “look” / “helpless” - motif.
7. Choreography, costumes, set & music… some very clever people put that show together.
8. Despite the underlying subtext of revolution and the revolutionaries being played by people of global majority (colour) it’s like Turn - on brand pro American dream/experiment. - an essay for later.
9. King George iii as a foppish unwell man - also an essay for later. Further watching.
10. This article I wrote a year ago holds up, surprisingly well. It’s fun, you’re allowed to enjoy things, just don’t assume historical fiction is historical fact.
me realizing Benjamin Tallmadge outlived Alexander Hamilton & George Washington:

Reblogs are allowed and you can meta analyze my meta & overthinking, if you like. I’ll probably make this a blog post of some kind later.

The treasury secretary...
On this day, July 12th, 1804, Alexander Hamilton died at the age of 47 or 49, in Manhattan NYC. As the result of a gunshot wound he had received whilst dueling his former friend and long time acquaintance, Aaron Burr.

Both Elizabeth of York and the virgin queen were ruled out of line of succession and declared bastards for a time. There is a female character who shares parallels with both of them, who is also allegedly ruled out of line of succession and is currently a bastard. So whenever people say Sansa cannot become queen because Robb's will..... 😹
Hee. Even if they got their wish and she was actually disinherited (which Robb literally cannot do) they still lose. I love it. :)

Here are some process photos from the portrait I made for Magister Lorenzo Petrucci, in lieu of a scroll. It’s inspired by two portraits from the Italian Renaissance. It’s nowhere near period materials (acrylic on wood panel), but I tried to make it look authentic by experimenting with period techniques. I did a black & white/ burnt umber & white underpainting and glazes of translucent colors on top. The frame is from Creative Mark Museum Collection. It was a very intimidating project, but also really satisfying .

I found this archive of Queen Victoria's journal entries in case you ever want that as a historical reference: http://www.queenvictoriasjournals.org/search/browseByDate.do
Note: You can only freely access them from the U.K. so you need a VPN if you don't live there. If it doesn't work, make sure to have connected to the VPN before opening the tab you want to use, as that affected my experience.
I don't use a VPN for my phone or laptop, etc. However, we use a VPN at work, so I might try to access it from there, during a break or something.
Thanks!

Nicolas de Lenfent
Tumblr media
Lestat's first male lover that we know of, in the books.
Note: Lestat had frequented brothels and bawdy houses in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes before losing his 'virginity' at 14.
Nicolas, our divine violinist, craved ruin so badly that he convinced Lestat (with Gabrielle's help) to run away with him to Paris. A skilled violinist and craftsman of well-off new money in the Auvurgne, France. Deeply depressed, dark-eyed, dark-haired. He/him, bisexual (male leaning) queer to me. I also personally read him as South Asian coded, as a brown bi-genderqueer person myself. But that is a bit of popular fanon backed up by history (citation 1) (citation 2) as @medievalfantasyqueen can attest.
