The Toils...
“I am all in a sea of wonders. I doubt; I fear; I think strange things which I dare not confess to my own soul. God keep me, if only for the sake of those dear to me!” - Dracula, by Bram Stoker (1897).
An incredibly brief character study of Benjamin Tallmadge (TURN) and Jonathan Harker (Dracula the 1897 novel).

Benjamin Tallmadge: the mastermind, gentleman and idealist patriot and a hero, in AMC’s TURN. But not the primary hero and not even an anti-hero to some, despite being a Connecticut dragoon and liar by obligation. A man of faith at war, questioning his faith (in the show) but not leaving his faith. A man who would die for the cause, but, a man who aspires to live beyond the war and have a wife and children. An enigma, maybe? Not to himself, but then no one ever is. “Oops” and a charming smile are usually how at least in the beginning, many of his endeavours go. Still, he keeps on, that is, until he realized just how complicated and horrifying the war actually is. He wins, because the Patriots do, but at what cost? Sarah rightfully points out the inconsistencies in both sides and the hypocrisy of many a Continental militia. What would you do with faith in the face of such violence?
Jonathan Harker: our dear friend, a solicitor and lawyer consistently done wrong in Dracula adaptations. Clever but not to the point of unrealistic. The ultimate wife man… who wouldn’t be for Mina? But also incredibly bi. Hopeful, idealistic and an English gentleman. Slowly he grows weary and afraid in the face of the horrors and toils until he has no choice except to act.

“My sister is a hunter. It is given to her to run swiftly, and stand so still she seems to vanish. She has sharp ears, keen eyes, a steady hand with net and spear. She can breathe mud and fly through trees.”
