No Context Hikaru Kirari MSS Reaction
Magia Union Link
Tumblr media
SPOILERS BELOW
She plays lacrosse!
for quite a while too!
she’s a first year... I know there’s some debate over her age, and this would help clear it up if only it specified middle or high school
wait, it said three years since she started playing in 5th grade. 5th grade is 10-11 years old, +3 = 13-14. never mind about the age debate then!
so she keeps on starting things but can never commit to them. hm.
it seems like she’s losing interest in lacrosse too.
ow!
that advisor is mean. she just got hit in the head! giver her some medical attention not a scolding!
YOU
...that’s some really bad timing
her parents are supportive but that doesn’t make it easier. tbh that probably just makes it harder
RAT
of course I know that it’s coming, but it still sucks to see her make a wish. especially for something that could’ve been resolved with time.
she said she’s quitting, asshole
but continuing the club when it’s not doing anything for her will only lead to further problems!!!
Yuna!
Tumblr media
Yeah I’d be bored too
Interesting... it looks like Hikaru became a Magical Girl before Yuna!
Yuna: “School dress code is stupid and the rules suck. vote for me.”
and then everyone clapped
their school having a rule about hair being black regardless of natural hair color... why is there no fanart of this? Yuna and Hikaru with black hair or roots growing in???
now riot
So Hikaru originally joined Yuna’s campaign to get out of lacrosse, but now genuinely wants to help.
hm. they’re mean. I get that it’s just the rules but still.
Tumblr media
Yuna: “try me bitch I know the law rules.”
Ugh, this guy again.
Yuna got *plans*
about time dude.
the day of the elections, and all of a sudden Yuna has a ring. 3 guesses as to what happened.
Hikaru’s got a crush!
Kinda wished they’d included more of what happened between here and Crimson Resolve, but for just Hikaru this is pretty good. maybe it’s in Yuna’s MSS?
Tumblr media
In Conclusion: I feel this could’ve been a story completely separate from pmmm and still worked. that fact kinda makes it depressing, because it doesn’t give the impression that Hikaru needed a wish to turn her life around. (not a bad thing writing-wise, just sad) also, the fact that I have seen no fanart of Hikaru and Yuna with dyed hair needs to change, why has nobody done this.
and the subtle storytelling of Yuna’s ring appearing during the election, where she seems very notably not nervous at all? excellent. it is so good.

If you're still doing them, how about top 5 MagiReco OTPs/NOTPs
Ah, it's hard to choose just 5 for the top of my list...! There are a number of ships I really like; I feel like I'm excluding some of my favorite children, haha. These are the ones I think about the most often, though.
5. Urara/Kurara: There's something really sweet about how Urara has seen Kurara at her worst and still loves her unconditionally. ;; On Kurara's end, it's more bittersweet-- she's painfully aware of how much Urara adores her in spite of how nasty and temperamental she can be, and it rips her apart inside because she doesn't feel like she deserves to be loved like that. I will withhold the "kurara loves urara too" essay for now for brevity's sake, but MAN Kurara loves Urara too!! She loves her so much that it's tearing both of them down!!!! RRAAAAGGGHFGDH it's too good......
I find it so cute that Urara refuses to give up on Kurara, even after they had such an ugly breakup. She knows that she messed things up by accidentally being insensitive, but she also knows that Kurara has issues of her own that she needs to sort out. In Urara's Kagome interview, she's like, sure, maybe things are bad right now... but people can change with time, you know? Maybe in a few years, they'll have grown enough emotionally that they'll be ready to make amends and give it another shot. I'm rooting for you, world's most patient clown. o7
Urakura can cover every base from fluff (remember, they used to be best friends!) to angst to hurt/comfort, making it very versatile and engaging to me. Combine that with the trope of "I love you no matter what, and I'll be here for you even on your worst days" (my weakness), and I never stood a chance.
4. Hikaru/Ao: My first Arc 2 ship, and still one of my favorites today! I remember seeing cute fanart for it way back when I first started playing the NA server and being super excited for the game to get to Crimson Resolve so I could learn more about them. :') While NA may have died before then, I am infinitely grateful that fan-translations mean I got to see these two anyway! (thank you hebinomiya and MUT for my life)
To explain a bit about why I like them, hm... They've got a nice dynamic in general! It's on the fluffier side without being bland, I think. Ao is playful in a way that feels a bit distant at first, but slowly opens up and starts to trust Hikaru more (a big milestone for how traumatized Ao is), while Hikaru gets a hit or miss crash course in Making Her Own Decisions. It's also interesting to contrast their individual ways of distancing themselves from their suffering (Ao trying to treat life like a game; Hikaru leaning hard into her role of "the Horse"), especially since they've both criticized the other for... doing almost exactly what they're doing themselves.
The way Hikaru tries to comfort Ao when she's scared or sad is cute, even if she doesn't know how to go about it. While Hikaru is largely numb to having to kill people at this point (wow, that's not depressing at all), she knows Ao isn't, and she gets worried when it seems like Ao is in over her head. Hikaru was the first person to worry about Ao after she accidentally killed Ryou, and when Ao seemed out of sorts in her MSS, Hikaru was the first person to seek her out. It plays nicely with Hikaru's struggle with agency as well-- she wants to help Ao, but she doesn't know where to start because she lacks experience and the ability to think for herself; she's caught between her personal desires (supporting a friend) vs. her duty to Promised Blood's goals; things like that.
As an added bonus, their designs compliment each other very nicely. Blue and orange is a solid combo. :> (And for one minor thing, I love that Ao has a swimsuit line where she's self-conscious about being a little pudgy, and then Hikaru has a swimsuit line where she says she thinks Ao is really cute. Tsuchinoko Real)
3. San/Miyuri: f4 could not have tailored a ship more closely to my interests if they tried. It's a little embarrassing... listen, you can't have san say "when she loses consciousness, she becomes my doll" and not expect me to think there's something going on These two pushed Neo-Magius from "kinda neat" to being my second-favorite faction. They're perfect as individual characters, and even better together; I adore the way they play off of each other. The way they want the best for the other and try to nudge each other towards success, even if that means enabling unhealthy thought patterns or behaviors and inadvertently strangling the other's personal growth, is fantastic.
And, of course, the lighter parts of their dynamic are just as good!! It's readily obvious how much Miyu loves San, but San loves Miyu too; she's just more subdued about showing people she cares for them. I think sometimes people forget how sad San was when Miyu started avoiding her out of guilt-- while it might not have been the same type of instant affection that Miyu felt towards San (at least until she saw Miyu dancing by herself and blushed over how pretty she was), San had very quickly gotten attached to Miyu as her baby, and was devastated to think that she might've lost her so soon.
They're more alike than they seem at first glance, and I think that's part of what makes their bond so strong-- San sees her old self in Miyu, and wants to watch her improve; Miyu sees herself in who San used to be, and admires that someone so timid can grow up to be so outwardly brave and capable. The whole thing is so sweet to me... ;;
... I might also mention that my headcanons for them help boost this up on my list, aha. I picture San as being very tall and broad-shouldered, and Miyu as a tiny little thing who could blow away in a strong breeze, which makes for a cute contrast. :')
2. Juri/Yuna: Oh man, where do I start? Everything about this ship is just perfect to me. I don't care whether they're friends, enemies, lovers, or what as long as they're together; their dynamic is flawless in every way. I'm stoked that they finally got a dual unit! ;_;
I am SO weak for the way Yuna cares about Juri. The gang wars could've been solved or prevented if Yuna had killed Juri before the situation got too bad, but she didn't want to do that. Yuna was so determined to leave Juri alive that she orchestrated that whole big fight in the first half of CR specifically to bring Juri down without killing her. It's not something that Yuna is proud of, but the fact that she manipulated a bunch of other girls (which unfortunately resulted in some casualties) because she loved this one particular loose cannon too much to kill her... man. Devotion.
Yuna is incredibly patient and understanding with Juri in general, which is extra cute to me because almost nobody else is. She knows Juri isn't a bad person, just struggling with mental illness and shitty circumstances, and no matter how Juri feels about herself, Yuna still loves her and wants her around. Not for her strength or holding Ryuugasaki together, but because Yuna cares for her as a friend. It's so... [clenches fist] AAAAAAAAAAAHHHH (´༎ຶོρ༎ຶོ`)
It's readily apparent how much this acceptance means to Juri, too. She used to rely heavily on Yuna for venting her stress since not only could Yuna go toe-to-toe with her in a fight (and willingly does so), she doesn't resent or demonize Juri for being the way she is. Even when Juri was hellbent on defeating Yuna in CR, she's greatly upset when she thinks that she might've actually killed her (or in the bad end where Juri does kill Yuna). For all of the animosity they held towards each other, they need each other; they don't honestly want the other to die. (Not alone, at least-- the scene where Yuna stops Juri from killing herself has an undercurrent of "how dare you try to leave without me", given that Yuna was also suicidal at the time.)
I am, as you can tell from this list, very weak for ride-or-die loyalty (or dubiously healthy attachment; take your pick), and juriyuna delivers that in spades, with all of the dressings and extras I like. Yuna's refined, serious, thoughtful personality and Juri's rowdy, aggressive, playful personality bounce off of each other in ways that are always enjoyable to see, whether it's something heavier like CR or fluffy like the Please, Yuna-san event. Top quality ship.
1. Bat/Ranka: "hmm, what if..." ← me haplessly coming up with an idea while reading CR for the first time 3 years ago, about to inflict an unbreakable curse upon myself
If I had to pick a number-one favorite ship in the series, it would be this. I am trapped in a hell of my own creation... We don't see much of their dynamic outside of CR or Ao's MSS (though Ranka does talk about the Bat elsewhere), and we've hardly gotten any of their relationship from the Bat's point of view, but that just means I can have a field day reading between the lines and piecing together a story from the scraps we do get. Enrichment!!
Ranka's "I need someone strong to follow or I'll die because I can't survive by myself" vs. the Bat's "I need someone prey on or I'll die because I can't survive by myself" is a great parallel that makes for a unique flavor of codependency. Sort of a "marionette and puppeteer" dynamic, I guess? Whatever you call it, it's 100% my brand; I go nuts for this stuff.
On Ranka's end, she knows that this relationship is unhealthy, but she keeps coming back anyway. Some of it is that she sees herself as too weak (physically and mentally) to make it on her own, so she clings to the Bat because being treated badly is better than being dead or alone. Some of it is probably that she sees herself as an awful person, and feels that she "deserves" to be hurt like this as punishment for how spineless she is (a feeling that compounds itself with every horrible thing the Bat makes her do).
It's a form of self-harm, in a way-- but even so, their relationship isn't always bad. The Bat liked Ranka enough to appoint her as her second-in-command, and for what it's worth, she did protect Ranka from the Futatsugi gang wars. She didn't take any issues with Ranka's abrasive, badmouthed personality, either! In fact, the Bat must've liked that about Ranka if she chose to keep her so close, haha. (And this is headcanon territory, but since Monzenbashi's base was an abandoned arcade, I have to figure that they shared an interest in old video games as well.)
In the end, Ranka is left in a thorny position where she hates what she has to go through, but can't bring herself to leave. After all, they have their good moments. The Bat loves her, probably. If she left, she'd be free from the abuse, but she'd lose the sense of safety and familiarity that the Bat gives her. That sort of struggle is super interesting to me-- I really like how this ship explores how loving and hating someone isn't necessarily a cut-and-dry thing.
On the Bat's end, while she does know that what she's doing is wrong, she adamantly believes that she needs to exploit others or she'll be the one to get exploited herself. She's a selfish coward who chews up the weak for personal gain and spits them out when she's through with them, viewing everyone else as either a threat to be disposed of or a tool to be used... and yet, despite all of this, she's shown to genuinely care for Ranka.
I am constantly thinking about the Ao-Ranka fight in CR where the Bat jumped to Ranka's defense, saying that she's going to kill Ao herself if Ranka is going to let herself get hurt like this. The Bat- the girl who gets a sick thrill out of torturing the helpless, who's too paranoid to trust anyone- loves Ranka enough that it made her angry to watch her get hurt. For as cruel and "save myself and fuck the rest" as she is, she has one person she wants to protect.
Something about the way the Bat wants to keep Ranka safe while also treating her like a pawn; hating the thought of losing her, but afraid of letting her get too close... fuckinf!!! Good Shit!!!!! Mix that in with Ranka's conflicting feelings about the Bat and I have a dumpster fire that will keep me warm for years.
I could be delusional (this ship is largely in my head), but it feels like a pretty realistic portrayal of an abusive relationship to me. There are all kinds of things to dig into here, from how it could get worse to how it could get better, and I just... auuuuggghhfhfh MAN im going to fling myself into the sun i love them so MUCH
(bottom 5 under the cut, both for negativity and because this is already super long)
If anyone's OTP is on this list, I apologize-- please know that none of these are a moral judgement or anything! 99% of my NOTPs are just ships I find annoying for one reason or another. It's nothing personal.
5. Rika/Ren: Truly the plain dry cornflakes of the magireco ship world. It's so Generic Yuri Manga that it manages to be frustrating in its lack of substance. I understand that it's one of the most popular ships (if not the most popular ship) in the fandom, but I'm gonna have to pass. :{
4. Ao/Ranka: Do you ever have a ship that bugs you, but you can't put your finger on why? This is one of those for me. Which is weird, because I am very much a multishipper when it comes to Promised Blood! And I adore the way that Ao and Ranka's relationship is written in canon! They have a really rich dynamic; I love watching them make that awkward, gradual shift from enemies to friends, where they clearly want to be closer but also don't quite know how to feel about each other. As a romantic ship, though... Eh. I've tried reading fics and stuff for them, but it's just not my thing.
3. Tsukuyo/Tsukasa/anyone: There isn't a single character who doesn't feel like a third wheel here. Sure, the twins might love her, but not as much as they love each other; she will always sort of be on the outside looking in. Tsukuyo and Tsukasa are so deeply, unshakeably intertwined that I don't even like shipping them monogamously with other characters (a singular exception being that I have a passive appreciation for Kanagi/Tsukasa), so adding a third girl to the mix is out of the question by default.
Yukika is probably the worst offender in terms of third wheel-ness because of her "Akatsuki-senpai" thing, but Amanes/Mifuyu wins the general awkwardness category by virtue of giving me the unfortunate impression of a mistress to a married couple. I tried reading various OT3 fics with the Amanes to see if I'd warm up to the idea, I did, but... it's regular amanecest or bust for me.
2. Kuroda/Asahi: it's not even about the abuse and general assholery on kuroda's end (heavy drama can be interesting with the right framework) it's that the idea of shipping asahi with a dude gives me hives
1. Himena/Hiko: het ship allergy strikes again, im sorry 😔 Sometimes I feel kinda dumb for this one because I know I'd probably like it if Hiko was a girl, but alas. Not only do I have negative interest in M/F, Hiko is the most boring self-insert-looking nerd guy they possibly could've designed. Ungh. (himena is a fun, fascinating character, i like her a lot, but the depths of my distaste mean that whenever a scene comes up where himena talks to/about hiko, i subconsciously overwrite it with "hiko is a girl" or "hiko is imaginary" to make it more palatable to me orz)
Plus the "unpopular boy gets bullied for dating popular girl" plotline feels super contrived to me-- while my experiences are obviously not universal, I usually find that unpopular guys get boosted up the social ladder if they manage to land a date with a popular girl. The whole "forbidden love" trope needs to be done in a very particular way in M/F ships in order for me to not find it stupid, and this one doesn't hit the mark.
... and this is a silly thing to be annoyed by, but it really does grate on me that whenever you ship Himena with a different character, there's an 85% chance that at least one person will come along like "what about hiko?" or "poor hiko" or "ot3 with hiko!" or whatever. Even if you specify that you've written Hiko out of Himena's head in some way or another (got his own body again, never existed in the first place, etc.), someone will make him the focal point regardless. It's happened to me, and it's happened to a few other people I've seen. :'| Frustrating to see an interesting comment on himesasha or w/e get derailed into "but himehiko!!", as if everything Needs to revolve around this one singular boy.

this RD today-
Pate and Bye were the cleanest and the performance closest to their intention, so credit to them. it felt like watching two different kinds of ice dance at this event, though -- PB take many small short steps and strokes to build speed and kind of stitch together everything that happens between elements. you never see a long glide. they're capable of it, because in the warmup they speed around the rink in long strokes, but not in the program. so because of that, they don't cover much ice with each stroke. they're good at disguising it, but if you watch what they're drawing on the ice, it's very choppy and serpentine - they never ride an edge for more than 2 beats at a time on one foot. and i think in the long run, you're never going to be as beautiful as teams with glide and deep edges. the flow and the range to portray different speeds and characters of music isn't there if you don't glide.
i watched it again, and it's kind of making me mad lol on a blade level, they're practically walking on the ice. on a screen you can get fooled by the choppy steps thing because the tempo of the steps is faster-- you see the feet moving a lot, and that can look like more energy, but it doesn't necessarily translate -
Olivia and Tim cover far more ice than anyone else here - it’s big skating and really exciting at times to watch. the late part of the program feels a bit empty, but on a skating level, it’s so dynamic, and she's so good. talk about drawing big lobes on the ice with her blades. she does look like she's leading him at times and like he's working to keep up with her. but mostly he is
IAMO teams have glide and cover more ice in long strokes but i think it takes time to develop the ability to do everything this way with speed and precision - Alyssa and Jacob have grown so much in the last year, but they can be a bit slower overall than some of the other teams, and it felt like the panel was pretty harsh on them. but watch the beginning of their program - they're making these arcs on the ice and not using a ton of crossovers or little pushy steps to do it, and when the music changes energy, they're musical - they're responding to it. i think that's why some of the silly dance moves (flexing their biceps, kissing them) don't bother me, though maybe the judges didn't love it. same for Leia and Pietro - the new MSS shirts that say "ride the glide" reflect what that school teaches, i think. VM and HD certainly skated that way. a number of the IAM teams here skate more like this too
i like Lopareva/Brissaud's RD a lot. i love this music - i didn't know Mylene Farmer before. Evgenia lost balance in that knee slide and touched a hand down, which she didn't do in practice this morning, and that didn't get called a fall, and their twizzles also didn't get docked in GOE much despite his bobble. (this event had soo many twizzle errors)
Wolfkostin/Tsarevskiy are doing so well for being brand new - i'm happy for her. was thinking about that Florence+the Machine FD she had last year and how it never got near potential and how uncomfortable she and Jeffrey looked all season- there really is such a thing as chemistry
coaches wrangle jackets, skate guards, water bottles, and tissue boxes for the skaters - every coach no matter who does this - but i'd never sat behind them to see that after the skaters blow their noses, they ball up the tissue and leave them on the boards in front of their coach😅 i keep getting distracted watching the skating and miss whether the coaches actually have to dispose of those too lol imagine leaving your snotty tissue for Marie-France Dubreuil to clean up

feel like I’m the only one who isn’t really dissapointed with akuma Homura. Like I get the disappointment of her not having her own special magireco transformation, but I feel nothing they could’ve made would top her rebellion one. And like, you could argue Madokami has her own transformation so Akuma Homura should have one as well, but the difference is Madokami never really had any transformations aside from that small one at the end of the anime (which I feel wouldn’t have sufficed for her.), so compared to Akuma Homura we don’t really have any other transformations to compare it to (i think at least).
as for her head tilt animation, i think it actually looks pretty good! Like yeah the head looks a little big, but I honestly that’s just because we’ve never actually seen a character tilt their head like she has. Plus, i feel if they tried to animate it a different way, it would just look like she’s breaking her neck so it’s good in my book.
as for her MSS, i haven’t actually gotten to it yet, but I have heard it’s just a retelling of rebellion which I’m not super bummed about. Like I think it would be cool for them to go into the wraith arc or maybe show Homura’s life after she becomes she becomes Akuma Homura but for the wraith arc I don’t think it work??? If that makes sense. Because like, if this unit was Homura like right after Madoka became god (the time between madoka magica and rebellion) then I think it would’ve made sense, but it’s not, it’s an Akuma Homura unit, so them focusing more on rebellion makes sense because the story in which she was created in. As for her life right after rebellion, it would’ve nice…but I think that might end up treading into Walpurgis no Kaiten spoilers territory and I doubt the magireco staff would wanna do that until more about Walpurgis no kaiten is officially revealed.
So basically, while I understand people’s disappointment with Akuma Homura’s unit, I’m personally not lol

Starting Lokrun book edits. Pray for me, because this is some tangled up clown shit i need to figure out 🥹
Posting this to the birdsite, but also (since @seeingteacupsindragons mentioned it) on tumblr. But I’m real bad about remembering to post stuff in general? And especially explanatory stuff (even when I really like it), so we’ll see how this goes.
Behold! Poindexter Explaining Their Writing Stuff: Edits
I finish the first draft of adult fantasy book, and since I hand write my first draft, the second draft is usually a ground-up revision. So this is deep dive edits for the Lokrun project.
We’re going all the way down to the dna on this sucker. The first thing I’m tackling is figuring out the antagonist’s exact motives, goals, and timeline. This drives the story. This is the part, having not looked at the mss for a couple of months, I know I was incredibly dissatisfied about in the first draft (the other being the side characters’s arcs). But first, the antagonist because that’s the spine of this beast. Everything connects to it.
I’ve also gotta make sure it’s rooted in the backstory and history of the world I made up (inspired v. loosely on an actual country). History in worldbuilding is like history in the real world: everything grows out of it and is shaped by it.
Tumblr media
If you can get this part good and sturdy, you have a solid enough structure to build a whole ass civilization on it. Just go hog wild (which is my goal, since I’m an amateur history nerd). A lot of my projects involve colonization (stares into the camera in Cherokee), and this one is no different, though we’re doing a European take.
There was a major conflict following occupation about a generation before this story starts. Some of the characters involved are still around at the time of the story. Their world views, and their decisions are shaped by this conflict. Every person in the story is growing up with the ramifications of it, and the budding political crisis that kicks this off is absolutely an outgrowth of it.
I’ve mostly nailed down what happened and how that especially shaped (warped?) antagonist.
What I’ll be doing today is getting into their head and planning how I would set out to accomplish their goals in this same situation. While also getting into the heads of the people who would oppose that and the counteractions they would take).
Only once that’s absolutely makes-sense-good-gut-vibes can/will I move on to protagonist and her merry band of fuckups.
As I said, pray for me 🥹

I haven't been able to keep up with Arc 2, what's the "Mikoto Parasite Incident" the Alina/Sana doc refers to?
Uhhhh, so, in chapter 8 of Main Story Arc 2 it was revealed that the Mirror Witch (Sarah Miralibis W/Mikoto Sena) planted a "mind parasite" in some random person and slowly moved through random people until it got to Alina. The brain parasite pretty much manipulated Alina into most of the violence and the most common interpretation is that she was still "on her own" in her MSS (Alina, I mean) but through all of Main Story Arc 1 up to now she was infected. Another victim of Mikoto's parasite was Hanna Sarasa before pretty much. Oh and it's all Mitama's fault again somehow; when she made her wish already-witching-out-Mikoto heard it (she wasn't near or anything) and it inspired her which produced the parasite seeking out those who would be willing to destroy Kamihama with minimal pushing. Also Mikoto caused Alina's amnesia in Arc2 because she was already near dying as a parasite in C10 but then Alina fused with Eve she got tons of energy making her able to do it.
Since it's, uh, new info, and not one that was present like two months or so ago when I started typing that out the whole thing, and I don't really follow Main Story (I literally only read the summary part where the parasite comes into play) I decided to not pay mind to it. There could be maybe some interesting interpretations out there that could still somehow play into Sana's (likely mostly scrapped) darker side and liken it to the parasite but... I don't think it will be me who writes it down.

Meguca tournament comments, part 10/11
Tumblr media
Multiple characters
It was difficult deciding between Ria and Hinano design. Both of them are really good.
Voting Sumire & Satomi cus I know not many others will, All the Kazumi girls are special to me and deserve better ;(
making us choose between masara and kokoro is homophobia /joke
Masara and Kokoro.... you pit them against one another but they are lovers.... matched set
Every time I look at Chika and Natsuki, I find something new in their designs. I honestly pity you for having to draw all of those tiny details lol.
Tart and Sayuki should switch outfits. Or, I would at least like to see Tart with Sayuki's hat.
it was so hard to choose between nanaka and ren....
Rika and Ren are perfect for eachother, and Rika's MSS is just super well written, as is Ren's! They both deal with serious topics like suicide, self harm and growing up gay super good! Shizuka is also just an awesome character and I hope we continue to see more of her in Arc 2
GO RIKA REN GO
I feel like Melissa and Ikumi could be great friends tbh
I’m mad that I had to choose between Sakura and Konaha those are my favorite characters
Ryouko and Nanaka have very similar design vibes, so it's funny that they're against eachother in this round.
I wish I could have voted for both Rika and Mikage! Love them both. Flipped a coin and picked Mikage tho lol
Karin and Alina’s relationship is so complex! It’s a long shot but I hope we maybe have a confrontation between the two in the anime
This is going to be painful if it comes down to Mito vs. Kako…
Hazuki and Kaede appear to have a "Summer vs Winter" vibe going.
Mayu v kanae was hard
Choosing between Sakura and Moka was hard!
Even if a character's design is busier, if their theme is more easily identifiable, I still prefer it myself. (Even though Mayu's 'paintbrush/painter' theme is more prevalent, Hazuki's design ties her to the Azalea crew, so even though I can't tell what the overall theme of the group is, a consistent design across three girls is more interesting to me than a singular one.)
It’s so hard to see Yachiyo and Sana go against eachother, but I’ve given it to Yachiyo every round so far so I’m going to keep up the fight!
i was SO TORN with mayu and mel, i wish i could have picked both gfhksj!!
THIS WAS SO HARD. RENA VS SAKURA IS AGONT
This is what I feared! My two favourites against each other in the final! How do I live with this choice to make? Choising Meguka is suffering...
I am a YachiMifu lover before I am human
I love the Rika Ren Christmas card art.

The MSS Policy
The MSS Policy by RJKazooku
“After this presentation, you'll each head to your assigned testing location! That's so kids from the same middle school can't help each other out, ya dig?!”
U.A.’s First Year Middle School Split policy ensures that on the rare occasion more than one student from the same middle school makes it into the prestigious high school, they'll be placed in different classes.
The policy's purpose? To promote independence and encourage first year students to build new relationships outside of their middle school peers.
In the grand scheme of things, it shouldn't change much.
And yet, it changes everything.

ulala yume for the ask thing?
(Again, these are still open for submissions! I only got a couple, so go ahead and send someone in!)
Ok so I'm gonna preface this one by saying that I haven't actually read Ulala's MSS, I only read the summary of the first part of her event, and I barely read anything on Ashen Revolution. The reason for which being that the little I've heard about the events in Yukuni/Ulala's background has really distressed me due to some personal trauma from my own childhood. So! I'm just writing here from the bit I've seen of Ulala's character from early Arc 2 as a PB member, and the small amount I've heard otherwise. Anyways!
Why I like them
Ulala's a people pleaser, but I don't mean that in a negative way this time. She's hard-working, amiable, and quite a skilled fighter, due to her diavolo skills. She's a natural entertainer and a cheery person despite her distressing backstory. She's lauded as a prodigy with the diavolo, but she never lets that get to her head, and keeps working hard to improve even more. However, she also still has clear complex issues in the manner that every prodigy character does. Ulala's constantly focusing on her shortcomings, thinking that she's not as hardworking as her former partner Kurara because she [Kurara] was always practicing more, seeing herself as a newbie magical girl and therefore weak and unsuited to the harsh Promised Blood despite her having shown impressive skills in spite of her newbie status, etc. Hell, the first part of her 'Farewell Party' event shows us that she's got issued verbalizing and even realizing her own emotions, when she can't figure out why she's so distressed over leaving the Promised Blood that she swears she doesn't care that much about, beating herself up over Sakuya's, err, stage-right exit, only finally moving on in a way by eavesdropping on Ryoko explaining to Chika how Sakuya was a dear friend to her despite being from a rival faction, and overhearing Sakuya's track team at Kamihama University Affiliated mentioning how they were worried that Sakuya hadn't come back in a while, since she was such a core member of the team to them... Wait, this wasn't about Sakuya, crap.
Ulala sees the best in others, but the worst in herself. Despite joining in order to spy on them, she genuinely comes to care for the Promised Blood members, empathizing with them over their similar backgrounds of being hunted for who they were or which group they belonged to. She might be part of Folklore, but she still holds a cheery outlook, even if it's a desperate one. Her interview from the recent chapter 11 even mentions how she wishes that, when she gets older, she wants to talk to Kurara again, saying that maybe the two of them could finally reach an understanding. Kurara, y'know, the one whose life Ulala used her wish to save, who then turned around and bereded and cursed Ulala for becoming a magical girl to save her friend's life. Ulala still wants to be Kurara's friend, even after Kurara basically told her to eff off and die (and reminder who the leader of the Eradication Faction in Yukuni is? That's right, Kurara.) That's a whole lot of hope in someone who belongs to Folklore, the faction with no hope for the future. Maybe it's having been around the Promised Blood that did it, who knows?
On a more surface level, Ulala's concept of 'yoyo meguca' is also pretty cool. Her weapon is a giant diavolo yoyo, and could you imagine the stunts she could pull with that thing as a weapon? I'm kind of surprised she doesn't have bind as part of her kit (why does she have fog, f4? That makes no sense.)
Why I don’t
Aoki Ume you've got to stop giving literally everyone mid-drifts, it's not original. Actually, I'm not sure I'd even call Ulala's shirt a 'mid-drift', it's less of a shirt and closer to whatever nonsense Kaede has going on. Basically, poor Ulala's design could use some work.
Favorite episode (scene if movie)
The scene from the first part of the 'Farewell Party' event, with her listening in on Ryoko and the school's track team talking about Sakuya, and Ulala coming to the conclusion that Sakuya wasn't lost if people still held memory of her. (It's also that conclusion that sends her back to Futatsugi one last time, due to a promise she'd made to Sakuya before the fighting escalated.)
Favorite season/movie
Same as above, I guess.
Favorite line
From her interview with Kagome in the recent chapter 11:
「そして大人になった時に、もう一度くららとちゃんと話をしたい。心がお互いに変わったら、今度は通じ合えるかもしれないんよ」
"And when I've grown up, I wanna talk with Kurara one more time. If both of our hearts have changed, maybe this time we'll come to understand each other."
She still holds hope for the person leading the group that's responsible for driving her out of her hometown and into the middle of a intercity war. Godspeed, Ulala.
Favorite outfit
Her school uniform! Her sweatshirt has lil' orange-shaped pins on it and it's the cutest thing!
OTP
I don't have one for Ulala, sorry.
Brotp
Uhhhhh Ulala with the other Promised Blood members seems to be quite comical at times, and her event implies she was buddies with Sakuya, so I guess one of them?
Head Canon
She keeps coming up with excuses as to why she's wearing a school uniform from a school outside of Futatsugi. (E.g. "My normal one got dirty!" "It got lost." "This is why you're careful who you let into your dorm!")
Unpopular opinion
I don't even know what popular opinions people have about Ulala, much less unpopular ones. At a loss here.
A wish
Let her go back to her friends in Promised Blood (if she wants to, which it sure seemed like she did.) No reason she can't be part of two factions if they get along now, right?
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen
Lemme just say this: Kurara, if the Eradication Faction gets out of Yukuni, watch your back.
5 words to best describe them
Cheery, Humble, GREEN, Agile, Skilled, and a bonus word: very traumatized-
My nickname for them
Froglala!
The context being that I had to distinguish Magireco's Ulala from Envy Phantom's (Harumaki Gohan album) Ulala, and the harugo discord likes to call Envy Phantom's Ulala 'Godlala' (don't ask,) so I started calling Magireco's Ulala 'Froglala' in response. People kept making jokes about Ulala and frogs, after all.

SPOILERS BELOW
Interesting Conflict - Mikoshiba’s schemes sucked but now they need money
also, fuck Mikoshiba
Daidaikko? (apparently a type of pessimon, which is a tree fruit)
they’re contacting other Tokime Clan members but it’s not going great
It’s still kinda strange how them being Magical Girls is common knowledge in the village
“you’re putting your hands in danger” oof. ah. oh no. oh noooooo. Charu!!!
the frustration at wanting to help but not having the skills to do it... yea.
TOURISM
Just say it has old charm and is a look into the past or w/e
Panda
Tumblr media
...I mean. there’s definitely *something* interesting in the water. not sure you wanna show it off though.
Charu has some neurodivergent vibes. ADHD perhaps? (that might just be me projecting)
feesh.
...was she singing the OST that came on? nice!
Sunao grew up kinda near there, maybe her knowledge of the mountains came from just exploring them a lot! that’d be cool
Bear :3
oh geez. Charu nooo..... you’re so helpful nooo...
but also, yeah I 100% get that feeling.
glad she bounced back
Tumblr media
TOURISM
yeah, charu feels pretty ADHD to me. She doesn’t think she’s measuring up so it’s just like “I’ll do everything!”
Charu no. you gotta sleep
...this is the same as the ost that’s playing again. I’m sensing a pattern (a GOOD pattern btw)
looks like they need put more work into infrastructure (and keeping traps away from the road) before tourism can get going. maybe some benches.
and no scythes. to be fair the visitors aren’t being great either but yeah.
HORNSE
uh oh. Hornse gone.
...are you not gonna go after the horse?
ok then.
It’d be kinda hilarious if someone noticed all the skulls rn.
new plan: sell the veggies. they *will* sell.
TOURISM
plans! yea!
I like it how Charu still feels like she hasn’t done enough, and needs to be reassured that she has done enough and that it’s ok
get a job you bum!
thank you Shizuka’s mom
Tumblr media
In conclusion: Charu Charu Charu Charu Charu. New blorbo get. I am squeezing her like a potato and carefully putting her on the shelf.
it’s great that they explored the fallout of Green Jasper Diviners on the village financially, and as of right now I totally head canon Chiharu as having ADHD. her struggles with comparing herself to others and just not having the skills to contribute in the same way that they can was both interesting and relatable.

Top 10 favourite Puella Historia characters? (including NPCs, not including girls already in the game before Historia ie any arc 2 faction girl or Nemu, etc)
I'm gonna be honest, my brain held onto Historia about as well as a sieve holds sand. ;_; I think the best I can do is Top 5.
5. Toyo: She feels like a very realistic depiction of a preteen kid, but in an "I want to help you find cool frogs in the pond and then come back home for popsicles" way, not an annoying way. Her relationships with the other characters are very sweet, as is her optimism in the face of adversity. Finding out that her "curse" was just epilepsy was so... ;; baby no!!!!! I'm glad that she seems to be getting better after her wish.
4. Ebbe: Guy of all time. Finds his dead friend's kids on a raid, gives them a big ol' bear hug, and immediately adopts them and makes them the leaders of his badass viking warband. He's the kind of fearsome warrior who will kill a man for interrupting him, but he's also such a high-spirited dad. He better have made it to Valhalla; he's a good dude!
3. Olga: I like how she's passive without being submissive-- for all of her big dreams, she's not much of a go-getter, which is a contrast I don't often see in anime. I guess the best way to put it is that she's complacent? She ends up getting yanked this way and that way because she isn't particularly aggressive and doesn't know how to challenge the status quo. It makes her feel very believable.
It's also cute how much she dotes on Gunhild, like letting her take a little extra butter for her bread and telling her all kinds of stories to help them both stay strong. The bit in Olga's MSS where she makes up a place called "Olganheim", a world for the two of them where the temperature's just right and their favorite foods are plentiful... man.
2. Gunhild: "Dual-wielding, heavily-tattooed berserker with a wolf pelt" is a fantastic concept for a magical girl, honestly. (Plus I always love black and red together, haha.) But she's a great character in her own right, fiercely loyal to Olga and willing to do whatever it takes to keep her safe and happy, no matter how cruel or misguided it might be. Straight-up slaughtered a king and his retainer because Olga was in danger, consequences be damned. Now that's devotion.
I need to say that I appreciate the mushy poetry Gunhild tried to write for Olga, too. Is it awful and tacky? Extremely. But it was written with love, and that's what matters most. :')
1. Ebony: Pretty much the only Historia girl I still think about unprompted, aha. She reminds me a bit of Ranka, in a way-- she absolutely hates her job, but she sticks with it because she feels like she has nowhere else to turn to, and lacks the mental fortitude to survive on her own. I cry a little inside when I think about her relationship with Shizuka... She finally made her very first friend, only for Shizuka to have to go back to her own time. But even so, the fleeting time they spent together was enough to give Ebony the will to find her own way in life... ;;
And she's cute! Her little fox face has some adorable expressions. Her magical girl outfit is... not great (I don't even care about the fanservice factor; it's just not visually interesting), but I like her civilian outfit a lot.

About Mahou Shoujo Site anime...
I just finished reading volume 16 of Mahou Shoujo Site (or, as the English title might be more familiar to some of you, Magical Girl Site) since it had its premiere in Poland a few days ago. It was one of the few series that attracted me from the very first chapter. I’m not sure if it was the horror of bullying or the “magical girls with a dark twist” trope, but I was grateful for finding it relatively early! I’ve read Madoka before and I was making some jokes here and there about how similar it is, but now? Apart from the obvious genre, these series have almost nothing in common! To be frank, I’m on the side of people not liking the whole “haha, Madoka ripoff” stuff. It just so happened that Madoka was seen by the masses and that’s about it! Anyway, I couldn’t recommend MSS enough even if I tried; for any fan of the very dark magical girl tropes, it should be at least a good ride! Interesting characters with more than one character trait that keeps them going, a lot of plot points that come up regularly so the reader doesn’t get bored, the pleasant and not at all messy art style, the clever use of magic. I could go on and on!
Tumblr media
Not so long ago I also realised this series had a 12-episode anime and I decided to watch it since I loved the manga very much. Needless to say, it was one of these series that are called “a nod to manga readers” because it’s hardy a good story on its own. To be fair, it just felt like a speedrun which shouldn’t be surprising, considering it was only 12 episodes of a 16-volume manga. Aya and Yatsumura’s friendship was heavily weakened, the plot point of Naoto Keisuke (that crazy Nijimin fan, remember him?) and Kaname was handled horribly, although the beach scene was incredible. To be fair, the entire arc with Nijimin fell flat; her backstory, her family (and don’t forget the dog), Aya coming to her funeral with a whole ass bouquet? Gone, nonexistent! And I hate it because I know it would be emotional, had the series been animated in detail.
Again, rushing, rushing, rushing. Every other thing felt so one-dimesional, the characters (especially the background ones) were either gone or so shallow... Sarina’s redemption arc? Aya’s huge growth and the entire reason to try and save everyone? Alice “Maganuma?” The King’s story and more than the second half of the manga? The reason why Kaname hates his father? Never heard of them :^) They straight up showed that Yatsumura was chosen to be the next Admin immediately after her death, which was a major disrespect, aand they turned her into a puppet that was only freed by the Power of Friendship™. Ah, let’s not even talk about the Admins; some things would be better off not animated! Sigh, no wonder some people are left confused and call this series “the one with sperm cells in the sky” (although, context...)!
Sorry, the entire ride was also just me looking for JoJo references at that point. Yatsumura being blonde with time-stopping powers ans saying “yare yare,” Nana laughing with a “nyo-ho” sound, Kaname having the same seiyuu as Ghacchio from Part 5 and Misami being Prosciutto (even if GW came out in 2019) which was most prominent when he was yelling, the first few seconds of the ending (by Haruka Yamazaki) starting as if it was about to bust Roundabout by Yes. It’s just funny to me, and it was more enticing than the actual show!

MagiReco Reading Club?
Something I’ve been thinking about is that, since few of us in the tag can read Japanese, very few of us can react in real time to current events.
Because of this, I feel like we’ve lost a small part of our community, where we’re not all talking about what’s happening currently. And when the translation does come out, not all of us are reading it at once to talk about it either.
I’ve been thinking that maybe we should have something like a book club, where we all watch a translated event (or magical girl story, or costume story), and then have a week where we devote talking about it as if it just released.
I was thinking that I might make a seperate blog for it plus a discord so that:
We’d have a place that will reblog posts to help encourage more posting + help get stuff out there people might not otherwise see
We’d have a dedicated place for people to talk about it in a more back-and-forth setting
Let me know what you all think! I’m thinking that a tentative schedule might be something like the following:
Week One: Selected Arc 2 Event (Example: Green Jasper Diviners)
Week Two: Selected magical girl side story + two selected costume stories (Examples: Chiharu Hiroe MSS + Iroha Winter and Swimsuit costume stories)
Week Three: Selected Arc 2 Event (Example: Otsukimi is After an Elegant Tea Party)
Week Four: Main Story Arcs (Example: Main Story Arc 2 Chapter One)
That way people have time to read it and a whole week is devoted to to a some stories. A schedule would be posted on a monthly basis so that folks can prepare ahead of time and know what to read, along with links to where people can see the stories on youtube or a pastebin.
This schedule could definitely be worked on though and it might look more like event story + mss + costume story, but that stuff can be looked at in the future.
Let me know if anyone is interested! If you’re interested and want to help mod the discord or with the tumblr blog, let me know too.
Also important: this is for fun, and not homework. It’s just a way to help bring this community together a bit more, since things feel a bit scattered. Don’t feel like you have to participate if you don’t want to-- it’s a game for fun after all!
Credit to @snaamagica for inspiring me with the idea due to the magireco book club she was doing on her own discord server (for arc 1 main story stuff)
