Welcome Home Arlie Mae (Little Duck au)
pairing: chris evans x wife reader (momma e)
summary: you’ve finally been cleared to bring arlie mae home, and you and chris couldn’t be happier
warnings: slight mention of post partum struggles, but mostly just very sweet goodness
a/n: i’ve been wanting to write this for a while and i hope you guys enjoy this💜
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today was the day you and Chris had been waiting for since you’d found out you were expecting your first child together. After 30 hours in labour followed by four days in the hospital, you were finally bringing home your little baby girl Arlie Mae Evans. She was quite tiny weighing in at five pounds three ounces, part of the reason you’d spent a few extra days in the maternity ward. Despite your reassurance to Chris telling him he could go home to sleep in your own bed, he declined, stating he was much happier here with his girls. Lisa and your mom had been amazing, getting the house ready for your arrival, meals prepped and ready so you wouldn’t have to worry about cooking, Lisa had even taken Dodger back to her house for a few days to let you three get settled and accommodated to your new lives with a little baby.
Arlie truly lit up Chris’s entire life from the moment she was born, to watching her breastfeed for the first time, and now as he watched you tuck her gently into her car seat, a soft beige blanket over her as it was the beginning of April, and it was still a bit cold out. You were definitely still in some pain, and you knew it would be a few months before you were feeling back to normal and like yourself, truth be told you were willing to go through all the highs and lows because of how special your little girl was to you already.
“Alright, you ready to go momma?”
Smiling you nodded, reaching over to grab the baby and hospital bag you’d packed, Chris was quick to interject
“I’ve got it honey”
You watched as he slung it over his shoulder before picking Arlie up with his free hand and reaching for your hand with his other
“Thank you my love”
“No need to be thanking me y/n, I should be thanking you for bringing our girl into our lives”
You felt your cheeks flush at the sentiment before walking with Chris towards the exit and to find your car in the parking lot. Arlie stayed fast asleep the whole time, you had read that newborns tend to sleep a lot and eat a lot, so you figured she’d stay sleeping until you arrived home, or at least you hoped.
Once you found your SUV, Chris made quick work of putting the bags in the front passenger seat, handing you the car seat with Arlie for a few moments before taking her from you and making sure she was clicked safely into the base that sat tethered in the backseat. Chris had made sure to order the top of the line for everything when it came to Arlie, even getting it professionally installed so he knew she would be extra safe.
“I can’t believe we’re going home as a family of three now
”
Chris looked back and sent a smile your way before he got out of the back to press a kiss to your forehead
“Me either, it still feels like a dream to me”
Nodding in agreement he helped you into the backseat so you could take your place beside Arlie, he helped buckle you in too before closing the door and getting into the car. Glancing back once more at the two of you in the backseat, he started the car and took off towards home, only this time like you said, you were going home as a family of three.
-
The house smelt like spring, fresh flowers placed neatly around your space, some being gifts from friends and family, you never failed to feel spoiled with all the love and warmth both of your families provided for each other. For the first few months the very gorgeous nursery you and Chris spent months on would remain empty until Arlie was old enough to sleep on her own. She’d sleep in the bassinet you’d bought to sit right next to your side of the bed, making it easier for feedings and keeping an eye on her.
As soon as you’d gotten home Chris wanted to show her around, which let you get settled on the couch, leaning back into the soft cushions which after laying in a stiff hospital mattress, felt like lounging on a cloud
“Here is the kitchen, where daddy and momma are gonna make you lots of yummy food and snacks
you can have whatever you want princess”
Listening to Chris as he walked around with Arlie tucked into his arms bringing a smile to your face, you could hear him taking her throughout your home to show her around, even if she was too little to really know what was going on at all
“This is the living room, we have lots of comfy spots for you baby, and oh look, there’s momma over there, she’s so beautiful”
Arlie squirmed slightly and let out a little noise, Chris smiling down at her and you swore to yourself you’d never seen him more in his element than he was right now
“You excited to see momma?”
She made a little whimper before slowly waking up and you knew she was getting hungry
“I think she’s excited to see my boobs babe...”
Chris laughed shaking his head before bringing her over to you, waiting until your shirt was pulled up enough before giving Arlie to you, who was quick to latch on and start eating. She had no problems latching or eating from the moment she was born, but you knew you’d probably opt to bottle feed and breastfeed to give Chris an option to feed her, as well as any family or friends that would come over.
You smoothed a finger along her head gently watching as she ate quietly, you couldn’t believe how perfect she was, and how 9 months of waiting could bring you so much joy. It was no secret that both you and Chris were extremely happy in this moment, you weren’t ignoring your doctors notes about postpartum depression and other postpartum hormone drops, Chris was more than prepared to step in and help when needed, and you knew the signs to look out for. For now, though, in this moment you just wanted to stay right where you were, with your little girl, and with your favourite man in the entire world, you had all you could ever want and more right in front of you, and it was a memory you were forever going to cherish.
"I love you both so much, thank you for bringing Arlie into our family"
Leaning your head onto his shoulder, careful not to disturb the newborn as she ate you peered up at him, eyes filled with nothing but adoration
"Thank you for supporting us every step of the way, we're very lucky to have you baby, we love you so much"
A kiss being pressed to your lips was enough to seal the moment you two shared, and knowing there would be many more where that came from, you hoped these little milestones and Arlie memories would stay within your mind for as long as you both were around.

Hi Momma! UŽïœȘ`U” ♄
I've never sent in an ask before so I'm a little nervous ; ; I just read your post about first times, and it got me thinking... I'm shy to admit im a virgin (24) but I would be so so excited for mommy to show me how to make her feel good!! On the other hand, the thought of mommy mounting me and demonstrating just how good it feels to have her claim & rail my puppy parts is making my head all fuzzy - U◜ïčâ—)*
This pup would love to have their first time with you UÂŽ;//ïœȘ//;`) ♄
Hi there sweetheart 💜😌
To me, experience does not matter. What makes a sexual encounter rewarding and fun is the energy between both people. Feeling whatever you want to feel and letting go is what it should be all about.
Mommy would love to make a silly puppy like you feel safe and submissive đŸ€ empty out that dumb head of yours and make you feel like there’s nothing else in the world but our skin.
I’m proud of you for getting up the courage to send this ask 💜 what a good pup you are

hii so in a post you wanted someone to talk abt their mlp headcannons, i’m getting into mlp rn so id absolutely love 2 hear them! (also just a question from a new tumblr user, can you see my asks on my page?) feel free to message them or whatever tumblr response mechanism there is! ^ω^
-not forcing, Moss ^^
AH HI MOSS !! THANK YOU FOR THE ASK :] 💖
first off , yes i can see your ask button !!! and welcome to tumblr :)
i tried to respond to this 4 times and i lost all my text and almost cried so im gonna make this much shorter than it was supposed to be (8 paragraphs) 😞 PROBABLY A RELIEF FOR MOST OF U THO LOL i have too many headcanons but here are some of my headcanons and /or “perfect world” scenarios for mlp g4 :)
i cant put all of my hcs here but im gonna put the ones i tell most ppl !!! ALSO NOT ALL OF THESE ARE IN THE SAME UNIVERSE!!! (if anybody wants more, ask me something specific .. >:3 nyeheh)
💜 - the mane six minus twilight have all been friends their whole lives, but not as a friend group until twilight came along!!
đŸ©” - branching off of the last one, rarity has made outfits for ALL of the ponies before !! but pinkie pie has been by far her most loyal customer because yk she throws parties like triweekly !! rarity mostly specializes in dressmaking but can also make other types of stuff . :) pinkie pie and fluttershy both seperately have taken some sewing classes from rarity cuz they alwayss loved her stuff :)
💛 - fluttershy runs/works a petshop/veterinarian clinic
💖 - at some point , pinkie pie moves out of sugarcube corner and runs her own nightclub !! (but like its not a naughty club, this is ponyville we are talking about here !! just lots of candy and soda and DANCING AND GAMES :3) and pinkie pie would be the funnest momma evr >w<
💙 - rainbow dash becomes a coach for the wonderbolts / some sort of coach :)
🧡 - applejack would grow up and continue to just run her family business and have a family of her own !! applejack would be a very caring mother but also she wouldnt take shit from anypony!! if anybody bullied her kid she’d have to try so hard not to kick anypony that bothers her and her kids
đŸ©” - rarity never expands her business or gets big, but she’s happy with it! her store is independent and a gem that many talk about all around the nation. :) she would be a fun mom but she would spoil the kid a lot lolz
💜 - twilight works at a school as a science/math/magic teacher, book author or a librarian! she would be a pretty average mom IN THE NICEST WAY POSSIBLE just saying she’s just your average girl!! but she has lots of knowledge to share :3 !!
đŸ©· - either:
-mane six all are alicornized. you cant just give the order keepers of the nation some fancy crystals and tell them to go on with their day while one friend who happened to be a rich unicorn who went to a unicorn school and got hit with a rainbow beam turns into a goddess and you have to watch her outlive you, you make them all goddesses or none of them. especially if the gifted unicorn never asked to be alicornized.
or
- twilight and cadenza rule together. cadence was done so dirty :( she was given goddess powers just to be sent to a Far Off Land and the Twilight was favored to just RULE A WHOLE NATION ALONE. insanity. also they have been friends / chosen sisters for the longest time. this scenario would not only give cadence a better storyline, but also spit in the faces of “theres already 5 alicorns” ❗
~
there was nothing about vamp rarity because i havent expanded on her yet <//3 and also you guys have yet to see my whole cross-race breeding chart.. >:P
but thats all for now TwT sorry it still got long , i hope you or somepony enjoyed !! if anypony draw/write something off of these PLEASE tag me just cuz i NEED content with these !!!!!!! :33 plzplzplzplz and tag me in any pony art/writing/ etc :3 anybody feel free to ask for more !!! bye bye <33

Greetings mortal being tis i crow presidante!!
I must humbley request a co tinuation to m!yuu x Epel where perhaps reader visits (and maybe bribes Crowley into letting them stay during winter while also telling the momma he will make sure epel is doing well) and just dose everything he can to irk vil while there and being a country boy..?
Of course!! I'm going to enjoy this very much.
m!MC x Epel Felmier (part 2)
Info: This is after the VDC but before the events of Chapter 6 of the main storyline. Epel used his "I performed in the VDC" privileges to convince Crowley to let you visit for a week. Also, Eps is a nickname you use for Epel when you're alone.
TW: None
Tumblr media
Now what? You were standing in the lounge of Pomefiore, but you had no idea what to do. You texted Epel in the meantime.
You: Eps, I'm waiting here for ya
Eps💜: Be there in a sec, Vil's bothering me.
You: Know when he'll stop?
Eps💜: Nope.
You sighed, putting your phone away. You contemplated looking around for him, but decided you'd get lost. Several Pomefiore students looked at you while coming and going, but an irritated frown sent them off quickly enough.
"Ah, Monsieur Sour Apple! I see you've arrived!" You knew that voice. You begrudgedly turned around. Rook was standing behind you with what seemed to be his signature smile.
"Yep, sure have. Say, d'you know where Epel is? He said he's havin' a chat with Vil or somethin'." You said. Rook shook his head. "Non, Monsieur Sour Apple, I'm afraid I have not. But I would be more than willing to stay with you until he arrives." He suggested. Well... it was rather awkward standing there by yourself.
"Ah s'pose." You said. "Ah've been runnin' all over hell's half acre tryna get ready for this lil' visit, Ah'd be grateful to rest my feet. I reckon Epel's gonna drag me 'round everywhere showin' me things." You added, laughing inwardly at Rook's confusion.
"Pardon?" He asked with a polite smile that portrayed his confusion. You grinned. "You ain't gotta worry 'bout it. It don' mean nothin'." Rook appeared to be satisfied with this answer and turned away. His face lit up with a smile a few moments later.
"Ah, Monsieur Cherry Apple, Roi du Poison, bonjour! I've been keeping our guest here entertained." He said pleasantly. You turned to see Epel walking toward you with a taller blonde guy (who you assumed was Vil). Vil had a regal vibe to him and a serious yet polite face to match.
"Hello. I assume you're Epel's friend that the headmage allowed to visit for the week." Vil said. You nodded, plastering a hearty grin on your face. If you were honest though, this guy was slightly intimidating. Vil gave a smile and turned to Epel.
"The room next to yours should be vacant, your friend can stay there for the duration of his stay." Vil said, then turned back to you. "Before I forget, what's your name?" He asked.
"Y/N L/N." You stated. "Yours?" You decided that you'd be polite. For now. Vil seemed to be amused. "I'm Vil Schoenheit. And beside you is Rook Hunt." He added, gesturing offhandedly to Rook. Rook looked pleased for some reason.
"Aight, well, Epel and Ah should get goin' then. Ain't got all day." You said with a shrug, shouldering your bag. You hadn't brought much since Epel had said that you'd be supplied clothes during your stay. You saw Epel eyeing Vil, who's smile had turned into a frown. Oh yeah, now you remembered. Epel had mentioned that Vil didn't like his accent. You were gonna have a lot of fun with this.
"C'mon, Epel. Let's get goin'." You said, looping your arm with his.
. . .
"Give it!" Epel demanded. You two were in his room, tousling around on his floor. You held a bottle of apple juice that you held just out of his reach. "Y/N!" He huffed. You blew a raspberry at him, shoving his face back with your free hand. One of his hands was reaching for the bottle while the other was trying to push your hand away.
"Epel, is everything—" Vil opened the door and stopped as he saw what was going on. "Epel..." He started. His face deadpanned. Epel took the moment to jump forward and grab the apple juice from your hand while you were distracted. "EH— give it back!" You chased after him as he ran around the room, dodging you.
"Epel!" Vil said loudly, causing both of you to stop mid-stride. He looked irritated now. "Eh— yes, Vil?" Epel asked. Vil gave an exasperated sigh. "What have I told you about rough housing? It messes up your hair." He said sternly. You snickered. "Eps' hair already looks like a rat nest anyhow. A bit of rough housin' won' make much of a difference, I reckon."
Epel swatted at you, then seemed to remember the bottle of juice in his hand. He put it down on his desk and turned to you with a scowl. "Yours don— doesn't look much better, you know." He countered. Vil seemed about ready to start yelling, but you'd spent enough time around him to know he cared too much about keeping his composure.
"Just fix your hair," Vil said to Epel. You thought of something quickly. While it would undoubtedly make Vil extremely mad, you wanted to see him lose his cool for once.
"Say, Vil, d'ya want some a this apple juice? It's healthy and don' have nothin' added to it. Jus' plain ol' apple juice." You offered, snatching the bottle from Epel. You opened the lid and extended the bottle to Vil. He looked suspiciously at you. "Epel, what ingredients do you use in the apple juice?" He asked finally.
"Just apples, Vil. My grandmother doesn't like any of those preservatives and stuff." Epel said. Vil turned back and looked at the bottle. He seemed dubious but nodded. "If it's true what Epel says, I suppose a little couldn't hurt."
You grinned like the innocent angel you are and went to hand him the bottle. Only, whoops, your foot happened to stumble over something, and you felt the open bottle leave your hands as you fell. Its contents spilled all over Vil's dorm uniform. Oops. If only you weren't so clumsy.
You saw Vil's face flush as the apple juice splattered onto his face, in his hair, and on his outfit. He could have shielded himself with magic, but he hadn't expected anything bad to happen. Who would've? Of course, it was entirely an accident, no chaos intended.
He didn't say anything (disappointingly), and he left the room, closing the door. As soon as he was sure that Vil was out of earshot, Epel burst into hysterics, rolling around on the floor. "Ah reckon that was the best thin' Ah've ever seen in my life!" He gasped.
"Ah thought he was gonna skin me alive with the look he had on 'im!" You said, also laughing. That made Epel laugh harder. You grabbed the nearly empty bottle and tossed it to him. He missed, and the bottle smacked him in the face (luckily, it wasn't glass). The remnants of the apple juice got on his face and his hair was already beginning to stick together.
"Aw, great, now Ah gotta shower before we head down for dinner." He complained, grabbing up the bottle and walking toward the door. "Would it make you feel better if I showered with you?" You teased. You dodged as the bottle flew past you, the door closing. Not before you caught the redness on his face.
Boo!! Omg, I'm finally done! It took so long to figure out what to do for this one, but @prolonged-eyecontact, thank you for the request, and I hope you like it! Feel free (for everyone) to send requests in whenever you like! They normally don't take this long, I swear!
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this post! Have a nice day/night~~!! 🧡

Chapter 6 - Special Delivery
Emily and I briefly discussed a move-in date, but she was called away on a case.  Again.  I was going to have to get used to her always being gone.  She made it bearable by texting me when she could during the day, and she tried to call me every night.  It didn't always happen – especially when she was on the west coast for a case – but I appreciated her effort.
Unfortunately, it had been two days since we had spoken.  She always sent her good morning text, but because she was in California, I didn't receive it until I was already in my morning class.  I was shocked to receive a phone call late in the afternoon while on my way home.  I didn't want to be distracted by the walk home, so I sat on the nearest bench to take her call.
"Hi!" I answered excitedly.  "I'm surprised to hear from you this early."
"I'm foregoing lunch."  I frowned both at what she said and how much exhaustion I could hear in her voice.
"Em..."
"I miss you too much."  I immediately relaxed.  She knew just what to say to make me complacent.  "Besides-"  Silence.
"Hello?  Em?" I asked.  I pulled the phone away from my face and sighed.  The call had dropped.  I quickly dialed her again and the call finally connected.  "Sorry Em, I think the call dropped.  I have no idea what you were just about to tell me."
She laughed, "I thought maybe that was your way of telling me my story was boring."
"No way.  I love your stories," I admitted.
"Okay well I only have a few more minutes and then we have to get back to work.  I want to hear all about your day, and I guess yesterday too.  I can't believe how busy I've been.  I'm very sorry, Indi."
I reassured her, "It's no problem, Emily.  I don't expect you to talk to me 24/7.  I do miss you though," I admitted.  There was no response.  Not again.  I felt my phone buzz with her incoming call.
"I'm so sorry!" I answered.
"Well I'm sorry I'm traveling and the connection is spotty.  I guess it's better than nothing, though," she responded.
"Actually," I conceded, "It could very well be my phone.  I have the shittiest GoPhone."
"It's 2022!  What the hell are you doing with a GoPhone?"  She chuckled.
"I know, I just-" I paused, embarrassed.  Quietly, ashamed, I continued, "This is what I can afford right now..."
I could almost hear Emily's mirth deflate.  "I'm so sorry, Indi.  I didn't mean to be insensitive."
"It's fine," I dismissed.  "Maybe I should get a sugar momma or something," I teased.
She laughed loudly and hearing her carefree happiness made me feel warm.  I was glad I could bring a little joy to her day.  I only wished I could be there to see her twinkling eyes and wide grin.  "What a cunning young woman you are.  I pity the sugar momma subject to your charms, Miss Banks."
"What's that supposed to mean?" I asked in mock outrage.
She chuckled again.  "Only that you are a dangerous, dangerous creature."
I heard a muffled conversation and her sigh.  "I have to go," she complained.
"I'm sorry the calls dropped, and we had to waste time with that," I said sheepishly.
"We'll make it work, I promise.  I'll try my hardest to call you later.  I miss hearing your sleepy voice before bed."  I swooned.  I don't know what her intention was with that comment, but it did nothing but awaken butterflies in my stomach.
"Prentiss!" I heard break through the line.
"I'm coming Morgan!" Emily shouted back, "Just give me a second!"
"Don't get in trouble on my account.  We can talk later, okay?  Go save the world."
She exhaled deeply.  "Okay.  Have a good afternoon, India."
"You too."  And she hung up.  I smiled down at my phone like a sap.  I hoped she didn't make a habit of skipping lunch, but it was nice that she prioritized me during her lunch hour.  I felt special.
On my walk home, I couldn't help but think how easy it all was.  It had never been this effortless with a person before.  Could contractually outlining the expectations of the relationship be the ticket?  Maybe Emily was onto something when she chose this over dating.  And maybe this ease would dissipate as soon as I moved in, but I was sure as hell going to enjoy it now.
I decided I wanted to be ready to move in as soon as Emily was ready for me.  When I got home, I began packing up my stuff.  I didn't have much that needed to come.  A lot of my clothes were way too ratty and casual to come with me; Emily deserved me at my best.  Actually, Emily deserved better than me, but somehow she chose me.  I made piles of clothes: 'bring,' 'leave here,' and 'ask Penelope.'  My process was interrupted by a knock on the door.
I looked through the peephole to discover a delivery man.  Maybe Penelope ordered something.   It wasn't the first time I pretended to be her to accept a package.  I opened the door.
"Miss India Banks?"
"Uh-"  I didn't know how to respond.  "I didn't order anything."
"Are you India Banks?" he asked impatiently.
"I am."
"Then sign here," he said holding out an electronic pad.  I looked at him dumbly for a few more seconds and his eyes narrowed.  He clearly hated me or his job – or both.  I quickly signed, and he thrust a box in my hands.  Before I could say anything else, he turned on his heel and briskly walked away.  What the hell?
I plopped down on a kitchen chair, already ripping at the tape on the box.  I pulled out plastic bubble wrap and packing peanuts to reveal a brand-new iPhone.  No no no.  This was too much.  I couldn't accept this.  How had she arranged this so quickly?
I quickly moved through the welcome instructions, grabbed my phone, and saved her number in the new phone.  I knew she was working but didn't care – I called her anyway.
"Hello Miss Banks."  Of course she already knew this new number.
"Why so formal?"
"I'm currently on a case," she answered simply.  I knew that – why was she telling me that?  And then it dawned on me.
"Ahh, you aren't alone."
"No."
"Well I'll be quick.  I was just calling to ask how I can send this back," I said referring to the phone.
"You cannot."
I huffed.  "Emily-"
"Don't," she interrupted.  "Hang on.  Lemme just-"  I heard a door close, and then things were much quieter on her end.  "It's a gift, India."
"It's unnecessary," I protested.
"I don't see it that way."  She was obnoxiously calm about this.  Like she hadn't just dropped several hundred dollars on a phone for me.
I rolled my eyes.  "Of course you don't," I said a bit sourly.
"It's necessary when I can't speak to you because our calls are always dropping."  I felt embarrassed by my shortcomings.  I felt inadequate for her. I couldn't even have a good enough phone for Emily.  "Look," she continued, "I think this is a learning experience.  I want to be able to provide you with what you need.  I thought we agreed to try this out..."
"We did," I agreed.
"Okay, so part of this arrangement is that I provide for you and give you gifts," she reminded.
"But we haven't really started the arrangement because you were called on a case.  I haven't moved in yet."
"So what?" she asked.  "We need to get to know each other, wouldn't you agree?"
"Yes," I affirmed shortly.
"And part of getting to know each other is talking on the phone while I'm away on a case, right?"
"I suppose."  Now I was just being petulant.
She ignored it.  "So don't you think that's a little difficult if your phone doesn't work?"
She had a good point, and if she had the money, I shouldn't let my own insecurities be what got in the way here.  She was right; I was being stupid.  "Yes," I ceded.  "I'm sorry, Em.  It's a learning curve.  It just caught me off guard.  Even when my parents were alive, this isn't really how I lived.  I'm not used to...having nice things, being taken care of.  Be patient with me, please?"
"Of course, baby.  Are we good?"
"Yes," I whispered.
"Okay.  I'll call you later; I have to work now."
"Em?" I quickly asked before she could hang up.
"Yes, Indi?"
"Thank you," I said genuinely.  I had never had such a nice phone.  And it felt nice to be taken care of like that.
"You're welcome, baby."  I thrilled at the pet name.  I shouldn't like it that much.  I was only her temporary baby, hers for a brief time.  The thought did nothing to lessen my smile.
"India!  I'm home!" I heard Penelope call from the living room.  I heard her heels clack through the apartment, increasing in volume as she approached my room.  "What's this?" she asked from my doorway, pointing to the explosion of clothes everywhere in my room.
"I'm so glad you're home!  Remember how Emily and I decided to do this whole thing?"  She smirked and nodded.  "Well I didn't tell you this yet, but one of her conditions is that I move in with her."
She gasped.  "What?!  You're moving out?"
"No!  Just staying with her for a few months.  Don't worry, I'll still pay rent" – or Emily will – "and I'll come home every now and then.  But Pen!  I have no good clothes that are worthy of being in her circles!"
Her face broke out in a huge, shit-eating grin.  "Do you know what this means?" she asked.  When I shook my head, she started bouncing up and down.  "It means one last girls' weekend!!  Shopping and drinks.  Don't say no!  Who knows when I'll see you next."
"Laying it on a bit thick, Pen.  I wasn't even going to say no this time."
She clapped her hands together and squealed.  "Let's go!  We're wasting precious minutes!"
Penelope dragged me to nearly every store in the mall.  I had to reign her in because I didn't have much to spend.  But even having nicer jeans, a few sun dresses, and more blouses made me feel so much better.  She also made me buy new shoes.  Apparently mine weren't sophisticated.  I don't know if she knew what a hot button that would be, but it did the trick.  I went way over budget because Emily deserved someone who looked good.
She pulled me towards Victoria's Secret.  "Penelope!" I objected.  "I'm already over budget.  Besides, she isn't even going to see what's under my clothes.  I don't need to go in there."  Frankly, the thought of buying sexy underwear freaked me out.
"I wouldn't be so sure," she said in a sing-songy voice.
"It isn't like that," I insisted.
"Oh I'll just bet it will be like that," she teased.  "Don't think I didn't notice you two eye-fucking as soon as you saw each other."  My cheeks flamed in embarrassment.  I didn't realize we had been so obvious.  "Please, Indi.  It will be my treat.  You NEED this.  Trust me."
Somehow I didn't think I really had a true choice.  We were doing this, no matter how embarrassing it would be for me.  Thankfully, she only made me grab a few things – "essentials" she called them.  I had no idea how black lace that I would have no hope of getting on myself was "essential," but complicity got me out of there faster.
Shopping took way more out of me than I wanted to admit.  I begged Penelope for a nice movie night where we could just sit on the couch in our pajamas.  She agreed on the condition that we go to our favorite bar the next day.

Emily must have been busy chasing after bad guys because I hadn't heard from her since her usual good morning text.  I expected her to be back in DC by now.  It had been over a week on this case.  I was anxious to move in and get everything started.  I was anxious to see her again.
Penelope dressed me in a revealing dress: tight, short, low-cut.  It was my worst nightmare.  And then she pulled out 6" heels.  After much protesting, I lost to Penelope's whims.  Even I had to admit how good I looked.  Maybe with the right clothes and attitude I could fool those in Emily's circle that I was worthy to be on her arm.
When we got to the bar, I checked my phone obsessively for the first hour, hoping to see a message from Emily.  I hoped she would at least tell me goodnight before she went to bed.  But it was 11pm in California, and she still hadn't texted me back.  I shoved my phone in my clutch and forgot about it for the rest of the night.
I drank way more than I normally would, and I danced harder than I ever would.  Normally too embarrassed to let loose like that, I had one last crazy night with Pen.  We danced non-stop; we drank non-stop.  The music was so loud it pounded in my chest as insistently as I knew tomorrow's hangover would pound in my head.  But to have fun with Penelope like that was worth it.

Scratch that.  It absolutely was not worth it.  There was some shrill, insistent ringing interrupting my blissful sleep.  It split my head open.  I felt the ache in every bone in my body.  Maybe I had a bit too much to drink.  The ringing in my room stopped, but its echo in my head would not let up.  To make sure that surprise alarm didn't go off again, I slapped around my nightstand.  I felt a small rectangle underneath my hand.  Oh!  It was my new phone.
I picked it up, the brightness blinding me.  I had several missed calls from Emily and a few texts too.  Concern broke through my hangover – was she okay?  The phone, now much closer to my face, blared in my ears with yet another call.
"What?" I asked, my voice cracking from being half-asleep and parched.
Her voice boomed through the speaker.  "If this is your way of protesting the new phone, consider me unamused, India Mae."
"What?" I asked again, my mind playing catch up.  Why was I getting the middle name too?
"I mean honestly, is it so hard to send a simple text that says, 'I'm fine'?  If I recall, we used to text quite frequently, so I know you are more than capable of sending two words."  Her voice was harsh.  It felt weird to have Emily mad at me.  Especially when I had no idea what was happening.
"I'm not protesting the phone, Em."
"Then what?!" she demanded.  "Because all I've gotten from you is radio silence." "I just went out with Penelope last night.  I was out having fun and I forgot to call.  I'm sorry.  I didn't think it would be a big deal."
"It is absolutely a big deal when I haven't heard from you all day, no idea if you're alive.  All you needed to do was send a text that said 'going out with Penelope for a drink.  Call you tomorrow.' It's really not that difficult."
"You're upset," I stated obviously, not knowing what else to say.  "I'm sorry," I apologized genuinely.  "This is new to me.  I haven't had to check in with anyone in years...No one has cared about my whereabouts for years..."
"Oh baby," her voice softened drastically.  "I had no idea where you were or if you were okay."  I had never heard this tone of voice.  She was actually concerned?  Over me?  I was suddenly overcome with emotion: guilt for not realizing Emily would care about where I was or that we hadn't talked.  I mean, it had only been twenty-four hours, but a lot could happen in twenty-four hours.  Of course, in her line of work, she would know that better than anyone.  Then a pang of longing for my dead parents because I hadn't felt this kind of care and attention in so long.  I sniffled.
"Don't cry, baby.  I'm sorry I yelled."
"It's not that.  I'm sorry, it's stupid.  Just-"
"It's not stupid," she assured.  "What's going on?"  Her voice was unbearably sweet now and I ached for the comfort only an embrace could bring.
"It's just...been a while since anyone's cared where I am or what I'm doing, or when I'm going to be home.  It just made me miss my parents is all."
"Oh sweetheart.  I'm so sorry.  What can I do?  I'm sorry I'm not there..."
"This is enough.  Thanks for listening.  And I will do better.  I'm sorry about last night."
"I'm sorry I yelled.  Call me later tonight when we have more time?  I miss your voice..."  And just like that, everything was back to normal, including these new, ever-present – though pleasant – flips in my stomach that happened every time I talked to Emily.
"I promise, Em."
