Nichelle Nichols’s impact can not be overstated.
She was the first black woman to go to space on tv (and her impact on representation on TV should also not be understated) but she also campaigned for NASA applications of diverse voices. Her campaign led to the recruitment of Sally Ride (first American woman in space), col. Guion Bluford (first black astronaut in NASA), and Mae Jeminson (first black woman in space).
Without her personal recruitment campaign (which she threatened to sue NASA if she put her reputation on the line to bring in these applications if they then did not go on to hire any of them) who knows how much longer it would have taken to get anyone other than a white man as a NASA astronaut.

Wednesday, March 13.
They're gonna make you proud.
Because if space really is the place, consider them well on their way. En route, if you will. The following 12 mighty fine folk only went and graduated from NASA's astronaut school. They are now ready and set, suited and booted, to head up into that big old mysterious blanket above and see what's good. Perhaps they will bring y'all a souvenir.
In the meantime, may we introduce you to the people who put the rad in graduation. Nay, who put the ace in space.

Apollo Application Program: BALLOS
Tumblr media
Concept art of BALLOS (BALlistic LOgistic Spacecraft), an Apollo-derived logistics spacecraft. It was studied by NASA, Lockheed and McDonnell-Douglas for the transportation of Astronauts to and from the Large Orbiting Research Laboratory (LORL) space station for the Apollo Application Program.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It came in three variants, a 6 astronaut version (2 crew, 4 passengers), 9 astronaut version (2 crew, 7 passengers) and a 2 astronaut version (2 crew, 10 passengers).
Tumblr media
It would potentially be launched onboard either the Saturn IB or Titan III-C (in hammerhead configuration). The Saturn IB was preferred. Despite being bigger than the base line Apollo CSM, it would weigh roughly the same.
The 12 astronaut version has the following description:
"It is conical in shape with a spherical segment base. The base diameter of the spacecraft is 190 inches. The cargo-maneuver module is conical in shape and located immediately aft of the crew module. The conical shape adapts the 190-in. diameter crew module to the 260-inches diameter of the launch vehicle. This module is capable of carrying 13,455 lb of packaged cargo and 3,755 lb of maneuver propellant. This propellant is sufficient to meet the maneuvering impulsive velocity requirements of 1,050 fps which is provided by a modified LEM descent engine located in the module. Three solid-propellant retrorockets are located at the fore end of this module also.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This vehicle fulfills the mission requirements of delivering 12 men and 13, 455 lb of packaged cargo to a space station orbiting at an altitude of 260 nmi and an inclination of 29.5°. The launch vehicle puts the spacecraft in a 105 nmi parking orbit from which a Hohmann transfer is used to reach the rendezvous altitude of 260 nmi. Impulse for the Hohmann transfer and injection into final orbit is provided for in the 1,050 fps of impulsive velocity capability of the maneuver propulsion system. The maximum dynamic pressure of 525 psf is reached approximately 85 sec after launch. The maximum longitudinal acceleration during launch is approximately 4 g's."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the end of the mission, the capsule would return to Earth for recovery, refurbishment and reuse. The propulsion module would be allowed to burn up.
"On an operational basis, prelaunch preparation time for a new [Ballos] spacecraft is 40 days. This time period includes receiving and shop processing prior to mating to the erected launch vehicle.
The projected 1968 to 1970 time period estimate for on-pad preparation time for the Saturn IB launch vehicle is 48 days. Of this, 23 days are allowed for payload mating and integrated vehicle checkout. The total prelaunch processing time required for the [BALLOS] vehicle, therefore, would be 63 days."
BALLOS never progressed past the study phase, like many proposals of the Apollo Application Program.

…Ok, the light is on, it is recording now.
This morning the Earth looked bluer than usual, and I really liked it, so I grabbed the camera and quickly snapped a picture. My photography skills are good enough!
Tumblr media
NASA's Jackson called us the noisiest astronauts ever. Fair... But he did remark on how efficiently Mark and I get the work done around the station, given the state and the age of the machines. We would really just split the massive amount of maintenance into two and made sure we tied up any loose ends, and they were always impressed.
Today we had to do a pretty massive job of putting on the NOAX stuff on the many of the station panels. It was our second time doing a spacewalk in only eleven days, so that's a big thing. And it was…four hours outside, putting basically space caulk. Heat really gets to these big guys! The application was less than fantastic though, as we had to use spatulas to put them on…it was a really careful science experiment. There's Mark and me, stuck to only the metal railings of the station for our lives, putting state-of-the-art things with some ma's spatula. It's hot doing this the whole day, just mashing this stuff in! Sweating in space is not fun…
I looked up the stuff when I got back from the work. They use these things in Formula 1 cars…? Well you learn something new everyday and experience new things too, but I'm not sure how this caulk thing will benefit that much… probably only useful if Michael Schumacher goes 27 thousand kilometres per hour, sure…
Tumblr media
Ok, I have been putting off talking about Mark.
The previous recordings already have them, but for memory's sake, I will just mention it here. I know, I know, I'm going to be 24 next year, and here I am, still feeling like i'm in middle school with how I'm acting.
We've been co-workers for two years now, and we've had our fair share of being at each other's necks. Horner didn't help either. The only thing he had to say to us before we left was that we were like an old married couple. And to get "our shit sorted by the end of the trip".
Well…
It really is hard to put it into words. It was pretty obvious to everyone, so I am the idiot here. Hah... I tried not to think much of it, especially during the suit up procedure for the spacewalks. it needed two people anyway.
Before we went back into the airlock, the bastard went to unhook my tether off the metal railing! Fucker!! Do you know how screwed we'll get if I wasn't anywhere with the EMU? He had the gall to laugh in his suit. I should have just beaten his face in just now.
("You didn't mention me holding your hands?")
clnk
("oh shoot--")
recording terminated due to lack of sound / voice activity.

Three hundred eighty-nine people experience the thrill of flying Mach 3 in an SR 71, an A-12, a YF 12, or an M 21. This number includes every single blackbird variation. Only one woman was a crewmember of NASA, Marta Bonn Meyer; of the 389, just 284 were assigned as crew members, the pilot and the RSO.
One hundred five people were VIP guests. Chuck Yeager was a guest, and he was allowed to take the wheel. The adversary of the SR 71 is Larry Welch. He got a VIP ride, General Larry Welch, the Air Force chief of staff, staged a one-man campaign on Capitol  Hill to kill the program entirely,” Ben Rich wrote in his book Skunk Works: A Personal Memoir of My Years of Lockheed. “General Welch thought sophisticated spy satellites made the SR-71 a disposable luxury. He did manage to get an SR 71 stick, place it on his desk, and brag that he flew the SR 71. ( as a Major, he applied to fly the SR 71 and was turned down, as 98% of applicants were.)
This includes one woman, Congresswoman Beverly Byron, who received a flight as a VIP, which was often a political move to influence a politician to vote for the SR 71 to stay in the air.
Or a President could order a VIP ride.
President Carter thanked the Roman Catholic priest for his Goodwill accomplishments during a meeting at the White House; he asked the president of Notre Dame University, Father Theodore Hesburgh, ‘Is there anything I could do for you?’ President Carter recalled when Hesburgh asked for the favor: ‘I said, “Fr. Hesburgh, it’s not customary for civilians to ride on a top-secret airplane.”
He said, ‘That’s all right. I thought you were Commander-in-Chief.’
The Father responded I want to fly the SR 71 faster than anyone has done before. He got his wish. SR-71 pilot Tom Allison reported that they got the airplane to Mach 3.5.2.
You could not just walk into the hangar, put on the pressure suit, and enter the cockpit; it took weeks of preparation. Some people did not make it through the preparation. One was an engineer, and later, Skunk Works President Ben Rich. He was so claustrophobic that he started yelling, “Get me out of here.”
The Air Force qualified 93 pilots and 89 RSOs; that’s it! If you know someone who flew the SR-71, remember they are extremely rare. These men definitely have the right stuff. There were more astronauts than there were men who flew the SR 71. Here is the link if you’d like to look at the names of everyone who flew in the SR 71. sr71.us/Supp_BBook.htm
I know all of this because my father, Butch Sheffield, was the first RSO selected for the SR 71 in 1965 ~ Linda Sheffield
