Another Miraculous Crossover Nobody Wanted (DCxML)
In the midst of so many Batfamily/Miraculous crossovers, the thing I feel so many people forget is that the Waynes are...well...themselves.
Sure, they're awesome vigilantes. Trained in martial arts and with great mental fortitude to help them against the likes of Scarecrow's fear gas, Joker's venom, and Mad Hatter's manipulations.
...the problem is that Hawk Moth is a whole different ballgame.
He doesn't target their fears or dreams. He targets ANYTHING. Like petty annoyances. Frustrations. Sleep deprivation. Obsessions. Things the Batfamily generally try to ignore on a regular basis.
If he can akumatize and reakumatize the same man over his love of pigeons and people who feel they've been wronged over silly reasons, there's SO MUCH that could come from the complete dysfunction/emotional constipation that is the Wayne family. Remember, ANY frustration or annoyance or upset counts.
Meaning Ladybug and Chat will be having their hands full with the Waynes until they leave.
And given that Hawk Moth comes up with the silliest costumes and powers...
...the others would never let them live it down.
...
It was a beautiful day in Paris. And an absolutely wonderful vacation to the City of Love, where everything was peaceful and nothing was wrong.
Dick stood at the window looking out over the city.
Tim was on his computer doing some reports. Possibly Wayne Enterprises work, but more likely mission work.
Damien had apparently gotten tired of grumbling and was focused on sharpening his sword—which Bruce really shouldn’t have let him bring. But given the situation, he couldn’t argue against letting Damien have something that would help him stay calm.
Cass had found a magazine to occupy her time, though she seemed somewhat confused as to the male teen model that kept appearing in nearly every line.
And Jason…
…he was grinning. And watching Bruce with such anticipation, looking downright hopeful as he waited. Not helping was that he was holding what appeared to be a brand new camera, fully prepared to start recording.
Bruce knew why.
But he would not give him the satisfaction.
Because nothing was going to happen.
Absolutely nothing.
Bruce twitched.
SNAP!
And his pen cracked from the sheer amount of pressure he was putting on it. Which was admittedly an annoyance, but wasn’t that big of a deal…
…if it wasn’t the 15th pen he’d broken in the past three hours.
It was fine though.
Nothing was wrong.
He was calm.
Calm.
Calm.
A muffled voice could be heard from outside despite the room being on the seventh floor of a building. Which of course was a coincidence and not because someone was actually right outside the room….and the building.
And perhaps if Bruce tried really hard, he could convince himself was just someone singing a line out of “American Pie” and not someone talking about butterflies.
No.
Because there were no butterflies outside. Because he was fine!
Not the slightest bit upset!
At. All.
“That’s thirty-three…” Dick counted.
…Dammit.
Bruce sighed.
“Did she come back to the roof?”
“Actually, she never left.” Tim confirmed, not even looking up from his computer. “She stopped leaving after the last incident and has just been standing there for the past couple hours now, catching them as they come.”
A long pause.
“How…?”
“Her partner has been bringing her water and snacks. And keeping watch whenever she has to leave to hibernate or use the little bug’s room.”
Bruce groaned.
Why couldn’t it be a villain? Or a fan or stalker? He could deal with those. He dealt with them all the time.
It was the well intentioned young superheroes that he had a harder time dealing with. The ones that wanted to help but were misguided in not understanding that their help wasn’t necessary.
“Gotcha!”
“Thirty-four.” Dick droned.
…no matter how many magical butterflies implied otherwise.
“Maybe we should do what the nice Ladybug hero asked and finish up our business in Paris?” Tim suggested.
“I refuse!” Damien shouted, jumping to his feet. “This villain has made a mockery of us and it must not be allowed to stand! I will not leave until he has been caught and my sword has tasted his blood!”
“Damien, we don’t kill, remember?”
“I wouldn’t kill him.” Damien said, looking away with a pout. “Just…dismember him a bit.” He frowned, consideringly. “Maybe cut off his arms. He can’t continue villainy then, right?”
Tim sighed.
“So that’s a no on going home early then.”
They heard a noise from the roof.
“Is she leaving?” Bruce asked, trying to hide how hopeful he was.
“Nope. It’s her catboyfriend back again.” Dick replied, blithely.
Bruce sighed.
“Do you think they’re dating?”
“Dick.” Bruce warned.
“Because the city seems to be really hamming up the romantic angle between the two and it’s kinda hard to not see.” Dick continued.
“Dick.”
“Even if it is kinda weird that they’re essentially shipping teenagers.”
“Speaking from experience there, Dickie Boy?” Jason cut in, cheekily.
“Stop it. Both of you.” Bruce ordered. “The goal of coming to Paris was supposed to be to deal with the emotional terrorism from Hawk Moth.”
“A little hard with all your emotional constipation there, B.”
Jason smirked.
“Or should I say ‘Justice Man’?”
Bruce twitched.

"You want me to patrol?" Luka asked, staring down at the snake miraculous being held out to him.
Ladybug nodded. "Yeah! Don't worry, I'm sure you'll be great at it!"
That wasn't what he'd been thinking about, actually. Taking the miraculous from her hand and putting it on - something she looked oddly pleased about - he pressed, "I don't mind, but why do you want me to do it?"
The miraculous shifted into its disguised state, a light coming off to bring Sass back into existence. The kwami reclined back like he was lounging in an invisible chair, then waved a paw and replied, "Public opinion."
Luka stared, still feeling lost.
Ladybug tilted her head in Sass's direction, continuing, "It's hard for snake heroes to gain any favor from the public. Real snakes are scary for people and no one can understand your power more than you can."
He vaguely understood that. To everyone else, the snake's powers weren't particularly flashy and the only one who got to experience the reset timelines was him. He'd never particularly considered how people thought about it as he didn't really care, but he acknowledged that the two were making sense.
"I care about all my heroes," Ladybug added, putting her hands on her hips, "and I want the public to care about them too. I'm sure all you need to do is go out there, put on a little snake charm, maybe tell a few stories about your timelines, and everyone will get that Viperion does great work just like everyone else, if not greater."
He couldn't be sure if she'd added on the end because she meant it, or because she could only gauge his success rather than his time and effort. The thought that she considered him a hard enough worker that he could outpace others made him smile.
"I'll do it. Thank you, Ladybug."
She beamed. "No, thank you." She took his wrist with the bangle in both hands and lifted it to her chest level, as if reciting a prayer to it. "I have my own things to do, but I know you'll do a good job with or without me!"
He nodded obediently. "Is there anything else I should know?"
"No! Or—" She paused, pursing her lips. It was the face of someone who felt like they were forgetting something. "Mm, not know, but..."
She pulled out her yoyo, popping it open and slipping her hand inside. Her tongue stuck out to the side as she searched for whatever she was looking for, at one point putting her whole forearm in. When the movement stopped, she lit up with a delighted, "Aha!" and lifted out a folded sheet of paper. She unfolded it to give it a quick check, then happily handed it over to him.
It was a map of Paris, lines snaking across with numbered indicators and circled locations. He would've assumed it was Ladybug's that she was letting him borrow if not for the "Property of Viperion" written in the corner, both 'i's dotted with hearts.
It was cute.
Ladybug sidled up next to him, pointing to the various parts of the map to explain, "This is the quickest way to get around the city while still making sure you're being thorough. The circled spots are where you can meet with a lot of people at once; great for public image. Even Chat doesn't know these."
"Really?" Despite the teasing tone in her voice, he knew she wasn't lying.
"He doesn't need it. He's a cat and people love cats." She rolled her eyes in faux exasperation, then nudged him with a playful smile. "We snakes and ladybugs have to stick together, right?"
He smiled back. He had no idea where this whole conversation of hers had come from, but he nodded and agreed, "Right."
And with that, she was ready to go, stepping away and waving him goodbye before heading off. Luka waved back, but felt eyes on him and turned his head to see Sass staring at him with a knowing expression.
"...What?"
He learned that day that Sass hissed when chuckling.
——
Patrolling was entirely different from fighting akuma, Viperion learned. There wasn't any real tension so long as he didn't find anything, and it felt like it served a nice role in getting him further acclimated to his hero self. He could jump and travel around easily enough when he was called upon, but it didn't escape him how his jumps grew more confident and his landings more solid as time went on.
Whenever he came across a circled area on the map, he would do as Ladybug had recommended and talk to the various civilians he'd find there. Unlike what he imagined would happen with Ladybug or Chat Noir, he had to check on them first rather than being called over for pictures or comments. It didn't bother him beyond the concern that he wasn't doing as much as Ladybug asked, but he couldn't verify until he went back to her.
Time passed smoothly enough, Viperion mentally checking off the map's numbers as he went. Near the end of the patrolling path happened to be around Marinette's house too, so he was in a good mood.
He was within eyesight of the place when someone suddenly called out, "Hey, Viperion~!"
He almost faltered, looking out towards the familiar voice to see Marinette on her balcony and excitedly trying to wave him down. He smiled unconsciously, feeling the natural pull she always had on him that urged him closer, but snapped out of it when he remembered that he was Viperion at the moment. He was supposed to be a stranger to her.
Taking one more look at his map, he noted the circle - oddly enough - right around the bakery. He supposed it could've been referring to the park nearby, but regardless, he was meant to be talking to civilians and Marinette was indeed a civilian.
If it wasn't what Ladybug had in mind, he'd twist the rules just this once.
Giving Marinette a look to convey his intent, he waited for her to step back before leaping towards her, allowing him enough space on the balcony to safely land. It was equally helpful that some of the various things on the surface had been moved in such a way that he'd had a clear place to drop onto.
"Hey... citizen." Wow, that sounded bizarre. "Can I help you?"
She giggled - cute - and nodded at him. Beckoning to him, she stepped back towards the entrance to her bedroom. "Yeah. Come with me for a minute."
She was so forward about it that Viperion genuinely wondered if this was just something that happened with heroes, or only with Marinette specifically. Perhaps Ladybug had even been invited inside before?
He couldn't bring himself to refuse her, so he followed her down onto her bed, then down the stairs to the main part of her room. He watched her walk across and bend down to the chest near her chaise lounge, her hands fiddling with the latch to open it. She reached inside and pulled out something teal, but he couldn't quite see what it was with her body obscuring it.
Marinette, careful not to show him what was in her arms, walked over to a full-body mirror nearby. Finally turning to him, she held up the object and asked, "What do you think?"
Viperion's jaw dropped. There in her arms was a Viperion plush and, judging from his own reflection in the mirror, she'd even gotten the smaller details right. He got the distinct feeling that she had looked at him more than he'd looked at himself just to ensure that the plush was accurate.
"Wow, it's..." He approached, reaching out but not feeling able to touch the plush, as if he wasn't worthy of it. At Marinette's encouragement, he gingerly held one of the little arms and gave it a squish to test its softness. "This is incredible work."
"Thanks." She beamed, swaying her hips and looking pleased with herself. "I try to make one of everyone, but this one's my favorite."
He looked at her questioningly, touched yet confused, but she wasn't meeting his eyes anymore. Her gaze turning back at the chest, she gently placed the plush in his arms and returned to her collection to start pulling more of her work out.
Viperion glanced at the stuffed imitation of him, unsure of how to handle it but doing his best to give it support. Marinette must've seen him at some point while setting out plushies, given the otherwise random giggle she'd let out.
After roughly a minute, she'd finished, sitting in the middle of the two groups she'd set out and spreading her arms out above them. Indeed, there was a group of plush superheroes to one side of her and even a group of plush akuma to the other. If he really eyed their details, he could tell which had been made when she was just starting out and which she'd done recently once she had experience, but it was all equally impressive to him.
Bringing the plush with him, he sat down in front of her and let it sit on his lap. He couldn't care less what he'd looked like, too busy admiring her work. His face must've shown it without him saying anything, as she puffed her chest out like she was basking in the unspoken praise.
Then, his eyes locked on something purple, black, and out of place amongst the heroes. In any other circumstance, he probably wouldn't have focused or commented on it, but it was also of him: specifically, Silencer, his akumatized self who had relentlessly chased down Bob Roth and stolen the voices of multiple people, including Ladybug herself. Bitter memories rushed back to him of waking up after the fact and fearing what might've happened while he'd been under someone else's control, the worst being if he'd hurt Marinette in some way
"That's an akuma," he said flatly. His own tone caught him off guard, but Marinette either didn't notice or didn't mind his disdain for that particular plush.
She followed his gaze to the mini Silencer in question. Rather than realizing that she'd made a mistake, she smiled, picking up the plush and setting it on her lap. Hand resting on the soft helmet on its head, she looked at him and explained, "Yeah, but... he's a hero to me."
She couldn't keep saying things like that to him without elaboration. He could only take so much without letting his civilian self show.
Thankfully, she elaborated this time, "People at my school get akumatized all the time; sometimes right in front of me. I have to run away from them as fast as I can, because even if they're not after me, I'm still another potential target for them." She turned the plush so she could look at its face, her eyes going soft as she continued, "Silencer was the first time someone got akumatized to protect me; when I felt honored to be protected. He didn't want my attention either, he wanted to get revenge because of what Bob Roth did."
Viperion hadn't known that. He'd had a brief discussion with Marinette about something he'd apparently said, but he'd been needed on stage and couldn't finish any sort of conversation with her. It warmed him greatly, knowing that she appreciated him even as an akuma.
"Sure, he was still another one of Hawk Moth's akuma, so Ladybug had to take care of him," she acknowledged, "but I think he's a little misunderstood, like you."
"Like me?"
She nodded, bringing back her point from earlier. "That's why the Viperion plush is my favorite. You're the least popular out of everyone, but I bet you do so much work during your Second Chances. Even though you should be getting more credit for it, no one notices until you're going around—" She gestured between them, indicating their current situation. "—like this."
He grew quiet, already seeing the connection. His heart sank at the thought.
"...It's relatable," she whispered with a sad smile, her fingertips trailing across the top ridge of the plush Silencer's helmet, "not being noticed for what you can do, people seeing you at your surface level..."
Shifting, Viperion held his plush self to his chest and moved within arm's reach of her. With his free hand, he reached out, cupping her cheek to tilt her face up to him.
Quietly, but firmly, he told her, "For what it's worth, I think you deserve to be noticed for all of you, not just the part that people decide to see."
It was definitely pushing the boundaries of what he should be "allowed" to do as a hero, but at its core, Viperion thought that that's what a hero was meant to do. Saving Paris was only the surface level of what people saw heroism as: the deeper, more important part was to care for the emotional well-being of the civilians.
He'd already gone through akumatization once and he'd never wish such an experience on Marinette. Keeping her happy was a top priority for him, both before and now, regardless of how she felt about him.
Her mouth curving back into the smile he'd missed in its short time away, Marinette reached up and placed her hand over his. "Thank you. Sorry if I brought the mood down."
"This is my job—" It wasn't, not in the way she'd be thinking of anyway. "—and it's not much compared to what you did. Thanks for appreciating me."
She nodded, eyes shining with her own gratefulness. There seemed to be more that she wanted to say, but she dropped his hand and shook her head to rid herself of it. Regretfully, she admitted, "I shouldn't keep you any longer."
He nearly blurted out that she could keep him forever if she wanted, but he held back. Equally as regretful as her, he returned the Viperion plush to her waiting hands.
Marinette took it, taking the plush in her free hand and scooting out of the way. The movement left a Marinette-sized space where she'd been, which is where she decided to set the plush down. Putting the Silencer plush back where he was before, she also took the Ladybug plush and let it settle next to the Viperion one.
It left the two as the only ones in the once-empty spot.
"They look good together," she commented, looking over her shoulder at him.
He stared, not sure how to feel about his crush having an opinion on his relationship with someone else, but he didn't express it. She clearly thought highly of his partnership with Ladybug in a way no one else did, which he considered a positive.
"...Yeah." He grinned at her. "I think so too."
——
"So?" Ladybug clasped her hands together, curiosity in her eyes. "How'd it go?"
"I got to talk to people," Luka replied vaguely as he handed the miraculous back to her. His visit with Marinette had made everything else fuzzy by comparison. "There was no trouble, but there was only one person who wanted to see Viperion."
"I'm sure that'll change!" she assured, her blinding confidence thoroughly astounding him. Leaning in and grasping his shoulders, she insisted, "You deserve to be appreciated, whether that's as a civilian, a hero, or an akuma."
He went to thank her, practically overflowing with all the affection he'd received at that point, but he paused when her words truly registered with him.
Ladybug, however, didn't give him a chance to respond. She stepped away, stashing the snake miraculous into her yoyo and making her escape back out into the city with her usual wave of good-bye.
Luka was certain that he'd heard properly: she'd said akuma. He supposed it could just be a coincidence that Marinette and Ladybug had both happened to reference his akumatized self, but Ladybug's expression had hinted to him that it was more than that. It had been strange to him that Marinette's balcony had been open for him, and even more so that Marinette happened to be there like she was waiting for him. If both she and Ladybug had wanted him to feel appreciated (mission accomplished on that one, obviously), then it was possible that they'd teamed up to give him a double dose of gratitude.
Or at least, that must've been the reason, because the only other option was—
Ah.
Just like that, Luka blushed a deep shade of red, the memory of Marinette placing the Ladybug and Viperion plushies together burning itself permanently into his mind.

okay consider this.
an alternate version of the same situation of the paris special. betterfly is fighting monarch in gabriel’s house in our normal universe with ladybug and cat noir with him.
he attempts to improve their odds by sending a kamiko to one of the heroes to enhance their powers, but their emotions aren’t strong enough and the kamiko just escapes and goes to nathalie who is in her room literally on the other side of the wall.
her emotions then were so strong and so close that they like.. pulled the butterfly toward her. nathalie had just come back an hour ago from the train and is only beginning to process the fact that gabriel lost his opportunity with the time miraculous. she’s feeling like a hundred things at once, but mostly anger and despair.
it’s still not quite an akumatization because even though nathalie’s emotions were negative, she’s not becoming evil. instead she’s just in a super confused state of being overwhelmed with her enhanced emotions but frozen because betterfly isn’t giving her a magical ability because he’s just as confused as her.
maybe he’s never made a connection with a negative emotion before or maybe he has but it was at some point in his dark past before he lost emilie and chose to become a hero. either way it shocks him. even more so when he recognizes nathalie behind it.
in his world he knows nathalie but she distanced herself from him also during his bad-decisions phase and he knows that the woman did feel a lot but was good at hiding it, and he had only been able to witness her showing any frustration or excitement very few times long ago.
in the meantime nathalie gets over the paralysis and is just hurting because the weight of all these feelings now has been made worse and they’re desperate for betterfly to give them a magical power and a mission to be their outlet, but none of those come. and she thinks (and says into the connection with who she thinks is monarch) what the FUCK gabriel how dare you.
ladybug and cat noir are still in battle with monarch while betterfly has just been standing there one the side. “nathalie” he whispers,, mostly to himself?
and she’s crying and pulling out her hair and she goes “why would you do this to me?”
something happens in the fight that forces betterfly up from his trance (he has to avoid a piece of furniture or something about to crush him) and he blinks for a second before breaking the connection and calling the butterfly back.
and then?? i don’t know? shadybug and claw noir show up and with their help monarch manages to escape? ladybug and cat noir run after them but betterfly stays behind? or maybe he does go with them and they get the whole shadybug and claw noir redemption thing sorted out and then he comes back? i don’t know the point is later everyone is gone and betterfly decides to go seek nathalie.
he knocks on the bedroom door but she doesn’t answer so he just comes in and finds her curled up on the bed crying. he says her name and without looking up she tells him to get lost. and she addresses him by gabriel again so he asks how does she know who he is. which confuses nathalie enough to look up at him and she jumps back when she sees that’s not gabriel. or at least not the one she expected to see. she only sees a stranger because of the magical disguise.
this is getting long i’m going to pause before tumblr crashes on me

We're finally at the final (thank the gods)! Things that we talked about that I haven't seen discussed:
Nathalie trying to kill Gabriel is such bullshit. "You can't do this! You'll hurt someone!" Nathalie, you have known that since day one! You knew he was working on this all season and you're good now! Why are you only trying to kill him now? You were healthy most of the season! You even physically pinned him! Oh, right, because you're not actually good. It's all just "better than thou" lip service. Hypocrisy is the easiest way to make us dislike a character and Nathalie's a massive hypocrite, so we're not fans.
Evil Nathalie was pretty fun. "Good" Nathalie is aggravating and has as lackluster a redemption as they gave Felix or perhaps even more lackluster. Felix at least switched for love of Kagami. Nathalie switched because Gabriel didn't heal her even though she had zero knowledge that he truly had a chance to do so (she wasn't there and Gabriel has never given up an opportunity to save Emilie so that he could chase Ladybug before). Adrien was never Nathalie's motivation or else we would have seen her protest things like Gorizilla, Style Queen, and Chat Blanc.
Moving on!
The mass teleport to Ladybug should have killed everyone because the whole world is supposed to be after her. A couple billion people teleporting to the same location should mean people squish each other or that portals open over each other/on top of people. Just saying. Budget saved her life because Mirauclous' Earth has a teeny tiny population due to rendering costs.
SO was mad how anticlimactic the final fight between Marinette and Gabe feels. Oh two people who barely interacted, have minimal personal connection, and always hated each other are fighting? Such a big moment! I'm so invested! He talked about how other shows build up to moments like this by making the villain terrifying or by making the villain and the hero have a strong, personal connection or even by making the fight super fun to watch, but miraculous did none of that. SO seriously didn't care about the fight at all and, to be honest, neither did I when I first watched it. I only tuned in when Marinette detransformed and I went, wait, wtf are you doing?
We get to all the scenes with heroes in other locations and SO paused the show every few seconds to ask me who tf person X was. Fei resulted in multiple pauses because of her varied forms. So I can confirm that the casual viewer totally followed this part and it was a wonderful addition (that's sarcasm, btw). He did ask "why would the French say that they need a bunch of Americans to win?" Which I though was pretty funny. That's certainly one way to read the Americans showing up!
SO works in IT. He was so mad that the laptop wasn't remotely wiped after it was lost/Lila stole it. And why does it have access to the Agreste mansion and not just the police robots? I thought Tsurugi corp was a tech company? This is all security 101.
SO's final thoughts: well that was soulless. I feel nothing. I can see why you're so done with this show.
Credit where it's due: while the final was massively disappointing from a story perspective and while I don't think Caline Bustier was written like a good teacher for anyone above the age of 5, it is really cool to show a pregnant woman run for office, win, and then be allowed to do her job with her baby in tow without any of that being treated as a joke. That's a really powerful thing for a young child to see and I'm glad it was included even Caline would make a terrible mayor in real life.

Set before the Finale. Félix uses his Kwagatama to summon his father's memory and has a talk with him.
every wall that i knock down (is just a wall that i'll replace) by @purplecatghostposts (8,355 words)
Now it’s Félix’s turn. Adrien needs to know about his own existence before anything else and Félix wanted to have that conversation himself. Marinette didn’t argue when he told her as much. If anything, she seemed slightly relieved. Félix has been meaning to do it for a long time. Adrien had been at risk if he said anything before, not to mention it felt cruel to tell him when he would still have to bend to his father’s orders until the rings were retrieved. But Adrien wears his own amoks now, making his own choices with no one forcing him to do any of it. All physical risks are out of the way. Félix only needs to break it to him. The problem is that it never seems to actually be the right moment.
Trapped by @trishacollins (13,368 words)
Felix asks to visit Adrien earlier, worried that his twin isn't responding to him on their bond. Gabriel catches him snooping and makes some assumptions about why. It gets worse from there.

Hey, Ribbons by childoflightningg (11,553 words)
Chat Noir’s transformation fell away for the last time. A feeble flicker of green, a blur of black zipping away. Ladybug wasn’t sure she wanted to see his identity, but it didn’t matter. Even if she had averted her gaze, she would have heard the gasps, the whispered name rippling through the crowd. Félix Agreste.
I Love You (for senti-mental reasons) by @redundant-lava (1,766 words)
All Gabriel Agreste wants is what is best for his family. Adrien understands this, but Felix has been persistent in interfering with his uncle’s plans, much to Gabriel’s frustration. A Felix and Marinette centric story after the death of Adrien Agreste.
Sure, Ladybug by ouijadarling (4,051 words, ongoing)
'We both know it'll happen again.' Félix is an old hand at being kidnapped, mainly because Hawkmoth thinks he and Ladybug are dating, and therefore, knows her alter ego. Every week, a new Akuma wakes him up in the middle of the night for some interrogation, and Ladybug ends up rescuing him. It's starting to get wearisome, and also, Félix has the strangest feeling that the supervillain knows him in some way. And that he's in for a hell of a time this final year of school.
Copycat by imthepunchlord (76,805 words, ongoing)
It was supposed to be quick and easy. Become Adrien Agreste for a week, steal the surviving twin ring for his mother, return and offer back the reclaimed heirloom and be a decent enough cousin that he gave Adrien a week break away from that house. That's how it was supposed to go. Of course, nothing ever goes how it's supposed to go. Not when Adrien goes AWOL on him and he finds a magical ring with a snarky little being asking him to also play hero. Lucky for the little being, Felix is curious and bored enough to try. And who knows, maybe it'll have some perks in messing with his Uncle.

The Truth 1
The Truth
[1 The Truth] [2 Soul] [3 Through a Shattered Mirror] [4 Healing]
Marinette took a deep breath. Adrien deserved to know the truth, about her identity and how his father, who is now being hailed as a hero, was Monarch, the man who terrorised Paris for the past couple of years. Adrien stared down at her, his eyes soft and loving. Marinette hoped he didn’t hate her.
“Adrien?” Murmured Marinette, glancing up at him, “I need to tell you something.”
“What is it?” Adrien murmured back.
“I…” Marinette’s mind went blank, “can’t remember.”
Adrien winced, “I hate it when that happens, you know what your gonna say and then to flies out of your mind.”
Marinette hummed, quietly pondering on what she was going to say.
TT
Ladybug looked down at Adrien, he was staring up at his father’s statue, with a troubled look on his face.
“Penny for your thoughts?” Asked Ladybug, making Adrien look up at her.
“I’m thinking about my father,” Confessed Adrien, “He gave his life to defeat Monarch, and he’s a hero for it, but all the stuff he did to me and my friends. How he hurt me and was unnecessarily cruel to my friend. He hated my girlfriend because she made me happy. I, I wanted him to be Monarch, j-just so I could feel justified in why I hated him so much.”
“I,” Ladybug paused, “I never knew you felt that way.”
“Yeah, well,” Scoffed Adrien, “He’s a hero now, everyone loves him. No matter how horrible he was or how bad he made others feel.”
Ladybug felt her mouth and voice move on their own accord, “I’m sure he was just doing his best, Adrien.”
Adrien scowled and scoffed again, “No offence, Ladybug, but you didn’t know him, you didn’t live with him, you didn’t have to work for him, and you didn’t have to try to reach out to him every day and get rejected.”
Adrien spun around and stalked off, as Ladybug gnawed at her bottom lip.
TT
Ladybug gnawed on her bottom lip, she’d asked Chat Noir to meet her, she’d made sure to specify that she wanted to see Chat Noir only, much to the rest of the team’s consternation. Since Monarch had been defeated and Gabriel’s statue had gone up, she’d tried to tell Adrien who his father really was, but every time she tried, the words wouldn’t need her mouth.
“Okay, LB, what’s the news?” Said Chat, making Ladybug jump.
“How many time do I have to tell you not to do that?” Gasped Ladybug, before straightening up, “Never mind, I have a problem.”
“Is it boy trouble? I promise not to cataclysm him too hard.” Rattled off Chat Noir, getting a sigh from Ladybug.
“It’s to do with Monarch’s identity.” Said Ladybug, not hearing the team all gasp underneath her.
“Oh, really?” Questioned Chat, “Who was he?”
“Gabrilllll- Gabb- for fuck’s sake, the guy who dressed like a candy cane before being bleached.” Spat Ladybug, internally cursing whatever was going on with her.
“Gabriel Agreste?” Asked Chat, slowly, “I’m sorry, M’Lady, but I thought he helped defeat Monarch?”
“In a roundabout way,” Dismissed Ladybug, “I can’t remember how, but he got the Miraculous, made the wish and then, nothing, I don’t know what changed, but he seemingly wished himself out of existence.”
Chat Noir swallowed, “W-why didn’t you tell Adrien this?”
“I’ve tried,” Sighed Ladybug, “that’s the problem, every time I try and tell him, my mind goes blank, and I keep forgetting what I’m trying to tell him. Then my mouth suddenly gets a mind of its own and tells him ‘Your father was a hero, he helped defeat Monarch’. It’s like my brain’s trying to erase that he was Monarch!”
“What?” Ladybug and Chat whirled around and spotted Carapace, “Adrien’s dad was Monarch?”
Ladybug groaned, before pinching the bridge of her nose, “Okay, okay, who else decided my instruction of ‘Chat Noir Only’ was a suggestion?”
Slowly, each and every member of the team crawled out from their hiding places. Ladybug groaned again.
“Yeah, I know, we didn’t listen to you and you’re not mad, just disappointed.” Said Rena, “However, in our defence-”
“Rena, be quiet.” Said Ryuko, walking up to Ladybug, “Ladybug, look at me.”
Ladybug slowly looked up and everyone jerked back, Ladybug had blood running from her eyes and nose.
“What?” Asked Ladybug, before her eyes rolled back into her head.
“Oh shit.” Swore Rena, rushing forwards, helping Ryuko lower Ladybug to the floor, “What the hell?”
Chat shook himself out of his stupor and knelt down next to Ladybug, “What just happened?”
“Ladybug said Adrien’s dad was Monarch, before she started bleeding from the eyes and nose and then she collapsed.” Said Pegasus, getting everyone’s attention.
“I think he meant that metaphorically.” Suggested Purple Tigress, as Rena frowned.
“I’m going to have to remove the earrings.” Stated Rena, “Hopefully, Tikki can tell us what’s wrong.”
Rena went to grab the earrings, before hesitating. She frowned, before looking over at the rest of the heroes, “Argos, I need your coat.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t have a blanket to hide her identity!”
Argos grumbled as he shed his coat and held it out to Rena.
Rena took it and carefully adjusted it over Ladybug, before reaching under it and pulling the earrings off. Chat stared at Ladybug’s shoes, they looked familiar to him, before Ladybug suddenly started convulsing.
“Oh fuck!” Yelped Rena, attempting to restrain Ladybug with Ryuko, “Now what?!”
“Stop restraining her!” Yelled Pigella, rushing forwards, “You’re at risk of harming her!”
Shoving the two out of the way, Pigella went to remove the coat, Rena opened her mouth, but a glare from Pigella silenced her.
“I’m sorry.” Whispered Pigella, before pulling the coat off Ladybug and rolling her onto her side.
Marinette suddenly expelled blood from her mouth, everyone except Argos, Ryuko and Rena froze. Pigella shook her head and looked at them, “We need to get her to a hospital.”
“How?” Asked Ryuko, “we can’t just charge in there and say ‘Hey this unconscious and bleeding girl is Ladybug, we don’t know what’s wrong with her!’ can we?”
Chat shook his head and looked away, before rushing over and grabbing the earrings form Rena and jammed them onto his ears.
“What are you doing?” Demanded Rena, as Chat flicked the earrings.
“Tikki might be able to help.” Said Chat, as the Kwami appeared.
“What?” Said Tikki, “Where’s…?”
She spotted Marinette, “Marinette!”
“Tikki, can you tell us what’s happening to her?” Asked Chat, quickly catching her attention.
“It’s a side effect of witnessing a reality changing wish, she tried to reveal what happened in the old world and now it’s trying to kill her.” Answered Tikki, “It was a stipulation Monarch made when he made his wish.”
“Is there any way to reverse it?” Demanded Rena, from Marinette’s side.
“The Celestial Guardian might.” Said Tikki, getting a frown from Chat, he didn’t particularly like him very much.
“They trained me to succeed Su Han-” Started Viperion, before someone snorted.
“You were trained because you were a loose end,” Said a man, appearing with a shimmer, “You are simply a soldier, not a commander.”
“Li.” Chided a woman, appearing, “At ease.”
The man scoffed, before jumping down, “Move aside.”
Ryuko reached for her sword, before the woman spoke up, “Li has a blood connection with the girl. He can help in ways the Grand Master cannot.”
Li crouched next to Marinette, ushering Pigella and Rena out of the way. He sliced into his hand, and started muttering under his breath.
Viperion scowled, before Marinette coughed up some more blood, with some red markings appearing on her. Li frowned, before resuming his muttering. Marinette coughed again, the red markings vanishing.
“She should be healed enough to go to a healer without anyone asking too many questions.” Said Li, after he was finished, “They’ll likely say that she’s exhausted, but she’ll be fine.”
Rena nodded, grabbed Marinette, with Ryuko helping her and jumped off the roof. The rest of the team stood in silence as the Guardians left, with Li casting a sharp glare at Viperion.
T
Marinette coughed blood into the paper bowl the doctors had given her.
“She’s incredibly lucky.” Said one to her mother, “if she’d ingested any more, you’d be making funeral arrangements.”
Sabine glanced at Marinette, before looking at the doctor.
“That being said,” they continued, “it may also be down to the fact the glass wasn’t ground fine enough.”
“Why didn’t anyone notice?” Asked Sabine, making the doctor look at her.
“Ground up glass looks a lot like sugar when ground up.” Said the doctor, “Does she had sugar in anything?”
“Practically everything she eats or drinks.” Said Sabine, frowning.
“Has she had any reaction to anything she’s eaten?”
“No, she’s hasn’t.”
“How about drinking?”
Sabine froze, “She threw away a coffee she got, she said it hurt her tongue.”
“Where did she get it from?” Asked the doctor, frowning.
“A coffee shop near her school, Petunia’s.”
The doctor didn’t move, before looking down at his notes, “I’ll be back in a minute.”
Marinette spat some more blood into her bowl, “Maman, am I going to die?”
Sabine sat next to Marinette and gently wrapped an arm around her, “I don’t think so, the doctors don’t seem to be too concerned.”
The door opened, with the doctor re-entering the room, “Right, I’ve contacted the police, we’ve had a number of other patients with similar symptoms. They’ll want to talk to you.”
“Is she going to be alright?” Asked Sabine, getting the Doctor’s attention.
“She’ll be fine.” Assured the Doctor, “Fortunately, the blood’s mostly coming from her tongue, but her fainting is down to another issue. Does your daughter suffer from insomnia?”
“I don’t think so.” Answered Sabine, “But she does drink a lot of coffee at home.”
The doctor sighed, “I’m going to suggest you put her on a caffeine hold and see what happens from there.” They handed Sabine a prescription, “These are a mild sleep medication, she should take one after a meal. I’m going to see about discharging your daughter.”
Sabine watched after the doctor as they walked out, before looking at Marinette, who, for some reason, had stuck four cotton balls in her mouth.
“Habe bhe beebin stobed?”
T
“Don’t be bemused, it’s just news,” Said Nadja on the television, “Petunia’s, a local coffee shop, has been closed by police after it was discovered they were giving some of their customers ground up glass in their coffee.”
Marinette stopped with a cheese puff half-way to her mouth.
“The owner of Petunia’s has not been arrested, but had declined to comment.”
Marinette shrugged, before going back the spell book, pausing when she saw a particular spell.

"Just because you're unhappy doesn't mean I have to be too." -Adrien to Gabriel, most certainly
The words echoed in the main hall of the Agreste mansion.
The quiet mansion fell even more silent. Adrien felt shocked by his own statement. Did he really say that to his father?
“Adrien.” His father spoke up, his tone clearly trying to push past his shock and reel back control. “I am your father…”
“Then maybe start acting like one!” Adrien snapped.
Gabriel felt his hand shake behind his back.
“What has gotten into you?”
Adrien thought about it for a moment. This was it, it was his chance to tell his father how he felt. For some reason he never had the chance to let him know, he always built up confidence only for it to shrink right after his father spoke. But right now, he was not going to back down.
“Why can you never let me be happy!? Everything I want to do or try is always turned down. It’s only when you have some sort of alternative or convenience that I ever get a modicum of joy. I thought things were different, I thought you were finally changing… I thought maybe you were ready to try and be my dad again.”
Gabriel watched his son’s expression shift. He could see the frustration in his son’s eyes.
“Why can’t you let me be with Marinette?” The question had tears welling in Adrien’s eyes.
Gabriel felt himself pause for a moment. But it was at that moment he realized that this was something he could use.
Gabriel’s expression shifted to sorrow. He covered his face and turned away, as if to weep.
“I have failed you my son! I’m sorry.”
Adrien’s drive felt halted by the sight of his father supposedly crying.
“Father?”
“I am dying Adrien.”
The statement shook Adrien.
“What?”
Gabriel removed his glove to reveal the blackened skin.
“I’m on borrowed time. Everything I had been doing was to prepare you for… for the inevitable.”
“Papa please tell me you are joking.”
“I wish I was but there is nothing I can do. Soon, I and Nathalie will depart from this world.”
“Nathalie? She’s sick too.”
“Yes Adrien… it’s the same disease that took your mother. There is no cure.”
“That can’t be true! There has to be something I can do!” Adrien felt his heart sink, he felt the horror of the situation hit him like a truck.
“I’ve been searching for a cure… and it’s impossible, unless…”
“Unless what?!”
Gabriel smiled darkly for a moment, before shifting to his sorrowful expression and turning to his son.
“Do you remember that book I had in the safe?”
Adrien paused for a moment, remembering that misadventure.
“In it there is a way… two magical items needed to grant a wish.”
Adrien realized what his father was saying.
“The miraculous…”
“Yes… the miraculous are the only way to save me… save us.”
Adrien took a step back.
“But… the miraculous are dangerous… monarch is after them! He wants to use the power to wish…”
“Wish for his family to return. That’s all he ever wanted.”
The final pin dropped. Adrien understood the situation. All the cards were on the table, Gabriel’s last emotional punch.
“You’re monarch….” Adrien stumbled backwards. Falling on the ground.
“Adrien…. Please. Help me end all of this. Help me make us a family again. That wish will fix everything.”
Adrien felt his heart rip in two as he saw his father’s pleading…
He started to try and get up… to run away. He needed to get out of there!
“As your father… I ask you to stay.”
Adrien felt his muscles freeze…. He couldn’t move. Why was he unable to move!?
“Help me get Ladybug and chat noir’s miraculous… and once it’s finally over we can all be happy.”
Adrien noticed his father touching the ring. This wasn’t his father begging him… it was an order. He felt his body being compelled to obey.
“Plagg… help…” he whispered as he felt his will being sapped.
“Tell me you will hel….” Gabriel’s expression stopped as he saw a kwami fly out of his son’s jacket.
“Cataclysm!”
Plagg touched Gabriel’s forehead before he could even respond.
“No!”
His face started to turn black much like his arm… but this spread rapidly and instantly Gabriel dropped to the floor and turned to ash leaving his clothes and rings…
Adrien was gasping for air… his father was controlling him, his father was monarch, he was a sentimonster, and … his father was gone.

Spin the Bottle
Core Four OT4 - Read on Ao3
I had too much fun with this one! Please enjoy! ^_^
...
Nathaniel’s family home is not as large or ostentatious as the Agreste family manor, but that only means Adrien feels more at ease. The space is wide and open, but still feels like a home rather than a museum. And all his friends are here for a party, which makes it even better.
“Dude! You’re here!” Nino greets, holding out his hand.
“Wouldn’t miss it!” Adrien exclaims, clapping into Nino’s open fist. He may have used a bit of Plagg’s aid to make it, but he knows from bitter experience that no one will miss him until morning, so why shouldn’t he come?
Nino ushers him inside. Rose and Marinette are helping Nathaniel pour snacks into large plastic bowls. The rest of the class - minus Chloe and Sabrina, plus Marc - are circled around Kim and Ivan who are locked in an arm wrestling match.
“Yay! Adrien! You made it!” Mylene says. Everyone else cheers in greeting. Adrien grins back.
“Hey guys!”
Kim looks up then, and in that moment Ivan pounds Kim’s fist into the table. Kim throws a pout at Mylene.
“Is it surprising that I’m here?” Adrien asks Nino quietly.
“I’m not gonna lie, dude. I didn't want to get my hopes up.”
Adrien sighs.
Nino offers him a dazzling smile and Adrien only feels warm. “But I’m always really glad to see you.”
“Me too!” Adrien agrees.
“C’mon Agreste! Welcome to the party!” Kim says, his arms draping over his shoulders. “Want to go up against Ivan in arm wrestling? No one can beat him.”
Adrien isn’t sure that’s a good idea. Some of his miraculous enhanced strength seems to carry over whenever he’s wearing the ring and Adrien doesn’t want to accidentally hurt anyone.
“No? Anyone up for a game of spin the bottle?”
“Spin the what?” Adrien asks.
“Oh, Agreste. You are so deprived,” Alix says.
“Spin the bottle is a kissing game,” Max supplies.
A kissing game?
“I dunno, man,” Nino says, pinching his own shoulder. “I have a girlfriend. Not sure if I should be kissing anyone else.”
Alya waves away his objection. “It’s a silly game! And I’m right here watching.” Then she pauses and turns back to Nino. “Assuming you’re okay with it?”
“Uh… yeah, sure. Levels one and two?”
She nods.
Adrien has no idea what they’re talking about. How could there be levels to a kissing game?
“Then sure! I’m down,” Nino agrees.
“What’s spin the bottle?” Adrien asks again.
Rose giggled, patting the space next to her on the floor. “We sit in a circle with an empty bottle in the middle. Then we take turns spinning it, and then whoever it ends up pointing at we’re supposed to kiss!” She claps her hands together excitedly.
“You game, dude?” Nino asks.
“You ever been kissed?” Alya asks before Adrien can answer.
Heat blooms across his face. “I have,” he says. It wasn’t technically a lie even though he didn’t remember either of his kisses with Ladybug. They happened. They count, right?
Alya smirks. “Great! We won’t go easy on you then.”
Adrien swallows down his nerves. Maybe he should have said he had never been kissed, but he has always wanted to know what a kiss felt like. Maybe this was an opportunity to find out. He takes a seat next to Nino.
The action earns him another cheer from his friends. Then everyone scrambles into motion to find a seat. Nathaniel places an empty soda bottle on the ground. Kim shoves it towards Adrien.
“As the only spin the bottle virgin, you should go first, Agreste.”
Adrien picks up the bottle awkwardly. “I just spin it?”
Rose crawls forward. “Let me show you!” She lays the bottle on its side and twists it around the center, sending it into a spin. “Like this!” She stops it before it slows on its own and hands it back to him.
Adrien spins the bottle. He swallows his nerves, or tries to - but his stomach squirms as the bottle’s nose whips around the circle from classmate to classmate. Who will fate choose for him?
When the bottle cap comes to a stop dead center on Nino, Adrien’s both relieved and somehow more anxious.
His first kiss - not his actual first kiss, but still kinda his first kiss - the first kiss he will remember, will be with someone he deeply cares about.
But Adrien also cares what Nino thinks of him, so what if he’s a terrible kisser?
Nino offers him a reassuring smile, and he relaxes. Adrien glances at Alya for permission, and she just shoos him towards Nino.
Adrien turns to Nino, leaning closer. If his stomach had been squirming before, it now feels like a half dozen Kwamis have taken up residence in his gut. But Adrien doesn’t hesitate. He blocks out the presence of all of his friends watching, and instead focuses on Nino - like Nino is a stage partner in a photoshoot.
Except kissing Nino is nothing like a photoshoot. Nino isn’t some model Adrien barely knows. Nino’s his best friend, one of his favorite people in the whole world with the possible exception of Ladybug, and even then, Adrien’s not sure. And Nino’s lips are soft and warm. Then Nino gasps, and they’re breathing the same air. What would it feel like to explore Nino’s open mouth?
But the sudden whooping and whistles send Adrien scuttling backwards before the kiss can become anything more, frantically searching Nino’s face.
“Woah there, Sunshine,” Alya says. “At least buy him dinner first.”
Adrien’s gaze darts back and forth between Nino and Alya. Nino’s golden brown eyes are wide, but he’s noticeably not smiling. Alya looks like a wolf about to catch dinner and Adrien’s pretty sure he’s the prey.
“D-did I do something wrong?”
“No!” Alya immediately reassures, shaking her head. “You just jumped straight to level three, which you’re totally allowed to do. Established couples do it all the time!”
Adrien’s cheeks burn as he glances back at Nino who was pinching his own shoulder, suddenly not able to meet Adrien’s eyes.
Has he messed up? He and Nino are definitely not an established couple and Nino and Alya agreed to levels one and two only before the game started.
Adrien hopes not.
“What’s level one?” Adrien asks.
“Usually we start with a hand kiss, and then a cheek kiss if you get the same person again. And then on the lips for the third time,” Alya says, grinning at him.
“Any other rules I should know about?”
“Do you want to know what all the other levels—“ Max starts to ask.
“Nope!” Alix interrupts. “That’s it!”
Adrien turns back to the group, and very carefully does not look at Nino, who is sitting right next to him.
Mylene goes next. The bottle lands on Rose, and Mylene gives her the smallest of pecks on her cheek.
Adrien’s face burns hotter at how stupid he was, but he resists the urge to bury his face in his hands. He risks another glance at Nino who immediately looks away.
But Nino had clearly been looking at him. Adrien wishes he knew what that meant .
Did Nino like the kiss? Is he wondering what it would have felt like to let the kiss last longer or go deeper like Adrien is? Or is Nino feeling super awkward and weird that his idiot best friend kissed him on the lips instead of his hand?
Adrien knows what he’s hoping it means, which makes him doubt that could possibly be what Nino is thinking.
Alix goes next, and the bottle points to Marc. Alix approaches, and holds their hand like it’s a treasure. “Marc! Though I’ve loved you more than I’ve loved anyone—“
Marc snorts.
“—I know when our romance is hopeless. Please forgive me! My heart is not strong enough to offer more than this small token.” And she dramatically kisses Marc’s hand to the giggles of everyone looking on before returning to her spot in the circle.
Adrien sits up straighter when Marinette spins the bottle. He feels almost as nervous as he did when the bottle was spinning for him. He’s not sure where he wants the bottle to stop, but when it points to Nathaniel’s knee, Adrien feels strangely disappointed.
Marinette moves, but she’s not even halfway across the circle, when Nathaniel holds up his hands.
“Marinette, I uh… given our umm… history, I’d prefer if you were the one person who didn’t kiss me.”
Adrien opens his mouth to object. Was Nathaniel seriously rejecting the just idea of Marinette in front of all her friends? Anyone would be lucky to—
But Marinette smiles at both Nathaniel and Marc whose hands are suddenly interlaced. “I understand completely. I’ll just spin again.”
This time the bottle lands on Alya.
Adrien is still a little disappointed, but it doesn’t twist his shoulders into knots the way it landing on Nathaniel had. He turns to watch the two girls with interest. Marinette and Alya exchange cheek kisses and then a peck on the lips with a playful “mwah!” before turning back to the group all smiles.
Adrien is jealous of how comfortable they both seem with each other. Nino still will barely look at him.
Alya spins and the bottle lands on Kim. Adrien tenses, feeling oddly protective, though Alya is quick to deposit a kiss on Kim’s hand and it’s over before Adrien can make sense of his feelings.
He’s being ridiculous. Why would it matter if Alya kissed Kim anymore than it had that Adrien had kissed Nino? Like Alya said at the beginning, this is a game . And as Marinette just demoed, even during the game, boundaries would still be respected.
He wishes he thought to ask Nino first if he was welcome.
After they make it all around the circle, a second round starts.
Rose goes first this time. She literally squeals when the bottle lands on Juleka. She’s in Juleka’s lap immediately, her legs wrapping around Juleka’s waist. Their mouths are sliding against one another, revealing flashes of pink tongue between the tiny spaces between their lips. Then their hands . Rose’s fingers are tangled in Juleka’s hair, pulling her closer, while Juleka’s hands are squeezing into Rose’s thighs.
Adrien can’t look away.
“Oh my god!” Alix shouts, smacking the two with a pillow, which barely slows them down at all.  “Get in the closet already!”
“The closet?” Adrien echoes.
“Level five is seven minutes in ‘heaven’ where you make out in the closet for seven minutes,” Max says.
Rose giggles as Juleka leads her away.
Then it’s Marinette’s turn again. Her bottle lands on him. Adrien has to remind himself to breathe. This is what he wanted during her first turn, he realizes. For Marinette to kiss him. He licks his lips. What kind of kiss will Marinette choose for him?
His excitement lasts right up until he looks at her. She’s white as a ghost, staring at him with wide blue, very much panicked, eyes. “I umm… I have to go to the bathroom!”
She launches herself to her feet and runs. Adrien watches her retreat.
“Girl!” Alya calls, running after her. “Get your cute butt back here!”
The pleasant fluttering in his gut turns sour.
Sweet kind brave Marinette doesn’t even want to kiss his hand.
Did she dislike him that much?
Alya chases Marinette into the kitchen.
She’s never completely understood what it is about Adrien that turns Marinette into a nervous basket case.
And Nino too apparently! She hadn’t missed how flustered Nino became after Adrien’s kiss.
Though she likes it when Nino turns into a flustered mess. They’d have to talk about it obviously, but Alya isn’t even sure what she wants to say yet because she hadn’t wanted that kiss to end so quickly.
She shoves the thought aside. The point is Adrien is as kind and as patient as they come, and starved for love and friendship, both. If there’s anyone Marinette and Nino don’t need to worry about disappointing or accidentally pushing away, it’s Adrien!
“Earth to Marinette,” Alya says when Marinette’s gaze remains distant. “I thought you would want to kiss Adrien.”
Marinette’s forehead clunks against the refrigerator. “I do! Just not like that.”
Alya arches an eyebrow.
“It’s just if he’s going to kiss me I don’t want it to be because a bottle told him to. I want it to mean something! I want him to want to kiss me.”
“Marinette, did you see his face?!”
Marinette turns to her with furrowed brows. “What do you mean?”
“He lit up when that bottle landed on him. He definitely wanted you to kiss him.” Not to mention that he visibly deflated when Marinette’s first turn landed on Nathaniel, but Marinette didn’t need to know that.
“Or maybe he just figured out he likes being kissed,” Marinette said dryly.
Alya grins. “You saw that, too?”
“Does it upset you that he and Nino both seemed so bothered by it?”
“No.” If anything she really really liked that they - especially Nino - were so bothered by it. She wanted to pounce on Nino right after. It’s not as often that she can push him into that shy flustered state anymore. She really likes him like that.
“But we’re not talking about me! We’re talking about you and Adrien. How do you think running out like that made him feel?”
Marinette buried her face in her hands. “I know! I know! He probably hates me.”
Alya shook her head. “He definitely does not hate you.”
Marinette likes Adrien because he’s so kind and understanding. Alya wishes Marinette would trust that.
“I really think that things would be a lot easier for you if you would tell him how you feel, but right now I’ll settle for you going back in there and giving that sweet boy who thinks you don’t like him , a tiny little kiss on the cheek.”
Marinette shakes her head rapidly. “I want to! I know you’re right. But when I’m there looking at his stupidly perfect face I turn into all panic. I’m never going to be able to tell him! And because of that I’m always gonna be a crappy awful friend.”
God grant her patience!
Alya wants a lot of things, several of which she may have just realized in the last ten minutes. What she would give to watch her boyfriend and his best friend really make out? Or better yet, her boyfriend and her best friend!
Sadly, they’ll likely never go for that.
But more than any of that, Alya just wants all of them to be happy.
“Marinette, Adrien is not going anywhere. He’s not that easy to scare away. He’s definitely confused right now, and maybe a little hurt, but just as he apologized to you the day you met him, you can apologize to him and I promise you, he will be all smiles.”
“You really think he’ll forgive me?”
“I know he will! And a cheek kiss wouldn’t hurt.”
Marinette smiles. “I can do that.”
Alya smiles back. “I know you can!”
And maybe if they kept playing, the bottle would grant a few of Alya’s wishes.
The chances are low with so many of them playing. Alya knows that, but a girl can dream.
…
Nino has never related so hard to a Marinette freakout. He is now painfully aware of how big a deal it is to kiss Adrien.
He traces his lower lip, a tiny part of him wishing he hadn’t been so startled by Adrien’s actions so he could have savored it more.
Except he can’t be thinking any of this! He has a girlfriend! He can’t be thinking about what it would feel like to kiss his best friend.
Except that he is thinking about it. He’s thinking about it a lot.
He’s so fucked.
And when he glances over to see how Adrien is taking all this, his best friend is staring at the empty doorway, the personification of dejection. Everyone in the room is staring at Adrien with sympathetic frowns, which only causes Adrien to further cave in on himself.
Nino taps his shoulder. “C’mon dude, let’s take a breather.”
Nino hauls Adrien to his feet and juts his chin at Alix over Adrien’s shoulder, who takes a hint immediately. “Mylene! It’s your turn!”
They don’t go that far, Nathaniel’s house does have a small outdoor terrace, so they can at least put a door between them and the group even if that door is made of glass.
“You okay, mec?”
Adrien shrugs. “Yeah? If she doesn’t want to kiss me, that’s fine. I just… I just wish I knew what I did wrong.”
“What makes you think you did anything wrong?”
“Nino! She literally ran away. She didn’t even want to kiss my hand.”
That’s not the problem. Marinette definitely wants to kiss Adrien.
But Nino can’t say that.
“Maybe she has a reason.”
“Like what?!”
Nino wishes he could explain. “You’d have to ask her, mec.”
Adrien sighs. And then looks at him. “Are we okay?”
Nino swallows, and glances down into his hands, heat burning in his face. “Of course, we’re okay.”
More than okay. Except maybe Nino really wants Adrien to kiss him again, but he definitely can’t act on that impulse.
Because he has a gorgeous and amazing girlfriend and he absolutely doesn’t want to mess that up.
“Do you think we’re not okay?” Nino asks.
Adrien rubs the back of his neck. “I just- I hope I didn’t make things weird. I’m sorry. I should have asked if you were okay with me kissing you. I thought that was the game.”
“It is the game. The not explaining the rules fully thing is something every one of us has gone through the first time we played. It’s always a question of will the person chicken out or go straight for it.”
“Really?” Adrien sounds so hopeful that Nino wants to laugh at himself. He really shouldn’t have been surprised that Adrien kissed him. Adrien has always wanted to have the genuine party experience.
“Really! Just in our situation it usually goes the other way.”
“Our situation?”
“Two dudes who are pretty solidly platonic?”
Maybe not as platonic on his end as Nino had previously assumed, but that was a crisis for another day.
“Was it weird?”
Nino’s ears and cheeks burn. “Umm… not to me. But I’m uh… not straight.”
He can feel Adrien’s eyes widen to the size of saucers, though he doesn’t look up.
“Oh. I uh… don’t think I am either.”
Oh god. That made everything so much better.
And so much worse at the same time.
“Thanks for telling me,” Nino says, because what else can he say?
“Yeah, you too.”
“You feeling better, mec?” Nino shoulder bumps him.
Adrien smiles. “Yeah, I am. Thanks.”
“Ready to head back inside?”
Adrien nods. Alya and Marinette are already there sitting next to each other with their arms looped together, and their fingers interlaced.
Nino licks his lips at the sight. If Nino says Alya is allowed to kiss her best friend, would she grant him the same boon?
Gah! What is he thinking? That’s not how relationships worked.
Alya smiles at him, and something in Nino’s chest loosens. He sits down and Adrien catches his gaze, and he’s smiling, and the warmth in Nino’s chest only spreads.
Oh, he’s well and truly fucked.
Marinette’s vaguely aware that Mylene and Ivan are taking a turn in the closet and Marc is about ready to throw the bottle out the window for refusing to land on Nathaniel.
Alix is not even playing anymore, but whatever she’s doing, she can’t stop laughing.
But Marinette’s attention is focused completely on the two boys outside. The fact that Nino and Adrien are outside, separate from everyone else, when Adrien had been so excited about just being at a party at all, is evidence enough that Alya’s right. Adrien is hurt.
And it’s her fault. She’s the one that hurt him by running.
Alya’s arm hand loops through her own, and some of the tension in Marinette’s shoulders bleeds out, and she can breathe again.
She doesn’t know what it is about Alya, but Alya grounds her in much the same way Chat Noir does. Marinette has a tendency to float away and spiral and lose herself, and Alya has a way of yanking her back to reality, but also of catching her so that the landing is always soft.
She grants Alya a beaming smile, hoping that some of her gratitude and appreciation shines through. Alya squeezes her hand.
The door slides open and Marinette’s gaze whips to Adrien immediately. He’s smiling and seems at ease. But when he sits down, he chooses the spot that’s further from her, the spot that places Nino between them.
Which, fair.
But she can’t stand it.
She scrambles around Nino, throws her arms around Adrien’s shoulders and kisses him on the cheek.
He presses a hand to his face where she kissed him, and turns to her with wide eyes.
“I’m sorry I ran,” she whispers. It’s all she can manage before she retreats back to the safety of Alya’s hold.
But Adrien is smiling again.
Unfortunately when it’s Alya’s turn, she has to untangle herself from Marinette.
In some cruel or amazing twist of fate, the bottle lands on Adrien.
Alya shoots her a mischievous grin. Marinette knows that look, and it’s not good. Abort abort abort.
Nino is in no better shape than she is at this pairing, Marinette distantly notes, but she can’t pay much attention to Nino, not when Alya is leaning so intimately into Adrien’s space, whispering something she can’t hear into his ear.
Adrien nods.
Alya grins and then she’s cradling Adrien’s face in her hands. Marinette forgets to breathe as Alya leans forward slowly, until there’s no more space. Their lips slide against one another—
Marinette’s nails dig into her knee.
—parting ever so slightly. The contact lingers, like a perfect moment frozen in time.
Marinette bites down on her own lip.
She’s not jealous.
She’s insanely turned on. She likes watching Adrien and Alya kiss. She likes it waaay more than she should.
And she is jealous, she realizes. But she’s jealous of Adrien.
She wants to be held so carefully in Alya’s hands.
Alya pulls away slowly. Adrien though doesn’t move. His eyes remain closed, totally blissed out. Alya grins, and turns triumphantly to Marinette.
That’s how it’s done, she seems to say. She made it look so easy.
Marinette wishes she had half her courage.
But Alya’s gaze doesn’t linger with Marinette. Instead, her attention turns to Nino who is also wide-eyed with his mouth hanging open. Marinette has never related to him more in her life. Alya’s grin only grows. Adrien finally blinks his eyes open.
Alix cackles. “I think all four of you might benefit from a turn in the closet!”
Marinette’s face is on fire.
“W-what?” Adrien stammers.
Nino is still speechless.
But Alya, Alya hums in agreement.
Every inch of Marinette’s body is tingling. She can’t talk, but she can’t sit still either. And so she runs.
Again.
This time Alya doesn’t follow. Her friend’s laughter follows her though.
She retreats to the bathroom, breathing hard. She tries to take a breath to calm her racing heart. She splashes water on her face and it doesn’t really help.
The door bursts open and it’s Nino standing in the doorway, looking just as startled as she feels.
“H-hey,” she says. “I… uh…” and she turns back to the mirror, unable to look at him.
“I’m s-sorry,” he stammers, backing away.
“N-no, it’s fy mault.” And she’s stuttering around Nino now.
She buries her fire-hot face in her hands. This is all Alix’s fault. She had Marinette thinking about kissing Nino now, as if Marinette needed a whole new person to be an absolute disaster around.
The problem is, it’s not hard to imagine. She had been overjoyed to know Nino was crushing on Alya all the way back at the zoo because she knew he was patient and just fun to be around even if she hadn’t known him that well then.
She knew him better now, and that image doesn’t bother her at all. The idea of all four of them?
She peaks through her fingers at him.
He bursts into laughter. And a second later she joins him. She laughs so hard she doubles over clutching at her sides. It feels a touch hysterical, but it’s helping.
Nino collapses down next to her a second later and she’s laughing so hard it hurts. And he’s laughing so hard he almost tips over, but she manages to steady him.
Eventually their laughter subsides, and they sit beside each other on the bathroom floor.
“D-did you want to talk?” Marinette eventually asks.
He shakes his head. “No, I just… I ran in here because I needed to be able to breathe.”
“Oh my god! I know! They’re both torturing us.”
“Alya’s doing it on purpose.”
Marinette groans, burying her face in her hands all over again. “Which means she’s not gonna stop.”
“Definitely not.”
“How are we gonna survive?”
Nino barked a laugh. “We’re not. We’re fucked.”
“At least we’re fucked together.”
Nino laughed again and held out a fist. She met it easily, grinning.
She could think of worse than being tortured by Alya side by side with Nino and maybe hopefully Adrien too.
…
Adrien stares at the bottle that’s pointing at him, afraid to see Alya’s reaction. He starts when she puts a hand on his shoulder, but when she catches his gaze she’s smiling gently with so much patience.
She leans toward him. “I’m gonna kiss you for real,” she whispers. “You okay with that?”
He nods dumbly just relieved that she’s still there - that she wants to kiss him.
And kissing Alya is a very different experience than kissing Nino. Her hands on his face are warm and gentle. She’s the one who leans forward, the one who presses her lips to his. She’s softer, but more confident. Her lips part, and instead of pulling away as he had with Nino, he reciprocates. Her tongue slides across his lower lip, and electricity shoots down his spine to his toes.
When she pulls away, he doesn’t move. He’s dizzy, and he doesn’t want the sensation to end.
Was every kiss this mind blowing?
He pulls away staring at Alya in shock, but her attention is on Nino who is definitely staring at them both in slack jawed astonishment.
And Adrien’s gut twists again, not sure where he stands with either of them at the moment, and nervous about how his kisses with each might be impacting their relationship.
And then Marinette runs again. Nino lasts only thirty seconds longer, and Adrien fights to keep breathing. He had wanted to come to this party so bad, and now it feels like he’s messing everything up. His eyes are burning.
But this time, Alya squeezes his hand and he relaxes.
“It’s not what you think,” she tells him. “They’re just being stupid.”
“They’re not stupid,” he defends. Marinette is brilliant and inspiring. He could watch her for days and never get bored. And Nino is just solid, grounding in a way that always makes Adrien feel like he is always enough.
She laughs. She definitely does not agree with him, but she also doesn’t argue.
Spin the Bottle seems to be a bust at this point. With Marinette and Nino gone, the group breaks apart. Nathaniel and Marc soon have their heads together over a notebook. Rose and Juleka are still making out in the corner. Mylene is on Ivan’s lap on a couch. Alix and Max are talking excitedly about something on his computer. Kim is nowhere to be seen.
He and Alya are effectively alone in the sense that no one is really paying attention to them, though they’re the only ones who haven’t moved from the original circle.
“Why did you kiss me like that?” he asks.
She grins. “I had lots of reasons.”
“Care to share?”
“Not yet, but I hope soon.”
He sighs. He tries so hard to respect other people’s boundaries, but he’s so tired of being in the dark all of the time. He does appreciate that Alya is direct about it though. She doesn’t try to evade or dance around the fact that she’s holding information back from him. And he believes her when she says she wants to tell him, so he doesn’t push.
“Are you okay that I kissed Nino earlier?” he asks instead.
“I’d be a total hypocrite if I wasn’t.”
Adrien frowns. “That doesn’t answer the question.”
She grins again. “Let’s just say I was a lot more okay with it than I thought I would be, and maybe that’s part of why I wanted to kiss you too.”
“Please don’t use me as a way to get revenge on my best friend,” he pleads.
She laughs again. “I promise you I was not trying to hurt him. And I don’t think I did, but you’re right. He and I should probably talk. Are you okay if I go find him?”
He nods, though it’s not completely true. He doesn’t feel like he’s on the verge of panic anymore, so he doesn’t need Alya to stay.
But when she’s gone, he’s alone with his thoughts. Thoughts he very much doesn’t know what to do with.
He’s in love with Ladybug! He’s certain of it, but this crazy game is making him realize that he has other feelings as well.
Feelings for his friends that he’s not supposed to have.
He wanted Marinette to kiss him. Hell, he still wants Marinette to kiss him, but he’s not always sure she even sees him as a friend, let alone something more. So trying something there doesn’t seem worth the risk. But he wants it anyway even though he now realizes he has feelings for Nino and Alya as well.
But he’s not allowed to have feelings for his best friend and he’s definitely not allowed to have feelings for his best friend’s girlfriend.
What is wrong with him?
...
Nino’s not sure what shifted, but Marinette seems calmer now. She’s smiling and he can’t help but mirror the expression. He always liked her smile.
A soft tap on the door stops his thoughts in their tracks, and Alya pokes her head around the door.
“There you both are!”
Marinette’s hands cover her face again, but Nino can still see the blush blooming under her hands.
“Hey girl, do you mind if I steal your spot to talk to Nino alone for a moment?”
Marinette’s head bobs up and down with far too much enthusiasm. And as she disappears, Nino wonders if he should envy how easily she escaped Alya’s gaze.
But the second the door is closed, Alya pounces on him. He barely catches her. Her mouth is on his, hot and urgent, her tongue demanding entrance, and he’s only too happy to grant her request.
But he’s confused. He thought she would be upset. Not that he’s complaining.
Her lips travel to his ear, and his neck. Oh yeah, he’s definitely not complaining.
But he’s still very confused.
“Babe! What the hell?”
“I’ve literally been wanting to jump you,” she tells him between kisses, “since Adrien kissed you.”
For some reason this upsets him, and he pushes her off him. “This isn’t some game, Alya.”
She frowns, settling backwards on her heels, but her hands stay on his shoulders. “I didn’t say it was?”
He takes off his glasses and rubs at his eyes. “I just… I’m kinda messed up right now because I think I like him, like him. And I don’t want to mess this,” He gestured between the two of them, “up. And I don’t want to mess him and I up either, but I can’t stop thinking about it now. And now, you treating that kiss like it’s just some kind of turn on or toy thing for you to get me all riled up.”
Her hold on him loosens, but she doesn’t let go. Instead she’s rubbing soothing patterns on his shoulders.
“Nino, it’s okay. Adrien is super sweet, and totally hot. And you care about each other immensely. Of course, you have feelings!”
Nino’s brows pinch together. “And you don’t have a problem with that?”
“I personally think it’s totally normal to have a bit of a gay crush on your best friend,” she says.
His eyes blow open. “Holy shit! You have a thing for Marinette!”
She clamps a hand over his mouth, as she glances frantically towards the closed door. “Shh! Nino! She’s not ready to hear that!”
“I thought this was about you riling me up, but this is about her too, isn’t it?”
Alya doesn’t say anything.
“How long have you felt this way?” he asks.
She bites her lip. “A long time. Longer than us.”
“I see.”
“Nino! It’s not like that! I don’t have a favorite. I’ve known I was poly for a long time, but I didn’t think that you were and Marinette was never interested, and I thought I had made peace with all of that.”
But today apparently had been testing all of their limits.
“Babe, why did you kiss Adrien like that?” he asks, but he thinks he already knows the answer.
“You kissed him first!”
“He kissed me! And that didn’t answer the question.”
She looks up at him. “Because I wanted you to know what it felt like to watch two people you love, love each other.”
He’s not sure he really got to appreciate that feeling in the moment. He had been too busy freaking out about his feelings for Adrien and if Alya would be upset.
“You’ve never told Marinette how you feel.”
“She’s not remotely interested. She’s always had tunnel vision for Adrien.”
Having watched her melt down after Alya kissed Adrien firsthand, he’s not so sure of that now.
“You’re a hypocrite.”
She scowls. “What do you mean?”
“You tell Marinette to confess every day. You’ve told me that you wish she would just be honest about her feelings and even if Adrien is somehow an idiot and turns her down she’ll still be freer. All of that applies to you. So why haven’t you confessed?”
“Well one, I’m dating you.”
It was a cop out. “That’s not in the way anymore.”
“Nino! It’s different when you’re best friends. Her friendship is precious and amazing and not less than romance. I don’t want to ruin that. ”
He nods. “Yeah. Totally. Makes complete sense. But I think that what you tell Marinette all the time is still true. That you will be freer if you are honest with her about your feelings.”
Alya suddenly grins. “Tell you what. I will confess to Marinette if you confess to Adrien.”
“Fuck. I walked into that one.”
Alya laughs. “Yeah, you did.”
He loves her laugh. It’s loud and real just like she is. She’s never as gorgeous as she is when she’s laughing her head off. He pulls her back into his arms and kisses her hard.
She breaks away, giggling. “What was that for?”
He shakes his head in amusement. She tackled him first. He was just following through.
“For luck,” he tells her. He doesn’t know for sure which way Marinette swings, but he knows that Alya doesn’t need any luck.
But he might.
Alya follows Nino out of the bathroom, and sure enough, Marinette is in the kitchen having never made it all the way back to the main living area. Nino nods at her and winks at Marinette before he leaves them both without a word.
Alya faces Marinette who is not meeting her eyes.
Had Marinette overheard her conversation with Nino? Does it matter if she’s planning on telling her right now anyway?
“Hey,” Alya greets softly, looping her arm through Marinette’s exactly as she had earlier during the game. “Are we okay?”
Marinette’s head shoots up. “Why wouldn’t we be okay?”
“Well, I thought you might be upset that I kissed Adrien. I feel like maybe I should have checked with you first?”
Marinette blushes. “I figured you were just trying to inspire me.”
“Did it work?”
“Umm… it was definitely inspiring.” Marinette’s cheeks are red as she looks down into her hands.
Alya’s heart flips in her chest. Dare she hope this isn’t as hopeless as she fears? She licks her lips.
Marinette frowns and grabs her hand. “Did you think I would be mad?”
Maybe she had thought that was a possibility beforehand, but Alya knew afterwards that she wasn’t. “No… I…” and she trails off.
“Alya?” Marinette’s voice trembles.
Alya shakes herself. She needs to pull herself together. This is Marinette . Marinette will never hold this against her.
“I never understood why you have such a hard time talking to Adrien. I mean, I knew that it was hard. Obviously in that you struggled with it, but I didn’t understand why you were so afraid . Adrien’s the nicest person on the planet, so even if he wasn’t somehow interested, which for the record, I think he is—“
Marinette shakes her head and Alya wants to shake her.
“—he would never ever be mean about it. But I think I get it now because there’s something that I’ve never told you because I was afraid.”
“You don’t have to tell me anything,” Marinette says, squeezing her hands. “Best friends don’t always have to tell each other everything.”
“Nino said I was a hypocrite for not telling you this and he’s right.”
“Oh no! Did you and Nino fight?”
“No! Nino and I are fine. I never told you this because I am absolutely terrified you won’t want me in your life anymore.”
Marinette laughs. “Alya, there’s nothing on this earth that you could do, be or say that would make me wish you gone.”
Alya forces herself to smile. She knows that, she believes it. And yet, she’s still scared her feelings could make things weird. She wants Marinette to come to her, to gush about boys, and ask for advice.
Will she still do that, if she knows Alya loves her too?
“What is it?” Marinette asks.
“I’m in love with you, Marinette.”
When Nino walks back into the main room, Adrien is in the corner with Max, Alix, and Kim. Max and Adrien are playing the latest version of his fighting game, which is inconvenient because Nino really wants to talk to him now while he still has Alya’s encouragement in his head. But he’s so nervous that interrupting seems impossible, and he’s hovering to the side of the group like an idiot. Even Alix and Kim are throwing him funny looks.
Maybe he just can’t do this.
But then Adrien glances at him out of the corner of his eyes, smiles that blinding smile, and Nino’s stomach drops in a fluttering mess. He has to do this because Alya is right. However Adrien responds, Nino needs to get this out or it will drive him slowly insane.
Max groans, signaling the end of the match. Kim claps him consolingly on the shoulder and Alix cheers, clearly having just won a bet.
“That was super close though,” Adrien says graciously. “I think you’ll get me soon.”
Max nods. “We’re definitely more closely matched. I appreciate you not going easy on me.”
“Wouldn’t want to diminish your accomplishment in any way.” Then he turns his attention to Nino and holds out the controller. “You want a turn?”
Nino shakes his head, stuffing his hands into his pockets so he can’t fidget. “Can I actually talk to you?” He points behind them with his thumb. “Maybe out on the balcony again?”
Adrien smiles, but Nino can see the sudden tension in his shoulders. “Of course.”
Kim makes a weird kissy face at Nino over Max’s shoulder. And Nino tries not to react, but he tucks his head into his shoulders like a turtle trying to hide in his shell. His neck and face are hot. Kim laughs, but at least it cuts off abruptly when Alix punches him in the arm.
“Hey!” Kim complains, rubbing his arm.
“Leave them alone!” she hisses.
Nino is relieved when the sliding glass door closes, so he can’t hear the interaction. But that lasts all of two seconds because now Adrien is looking at him, waiting for whatever Nino wants to say, and Nino knows Adrien well enough to guess that Adrien’s bracing himself for the worst news ever.
Which means Nino needs to buck up and be brave.
“So you know how I said I wasn’t straight?” Nino blurts out.
Adrien lifts his head up and Nino can breathe just a bit easier. “Yeah?”
“Well, that kiss, mec.” Nino adjusts his hat and risks a glance at his best friend. “I think it awakened some things. And if you’re game, I would k-kinda like to see where that could go?” His voice is pitched too high, and Nino wants to hide, but the hard part is done, and so he makes himself sit still.
Well, mostly still. Nino doesn’t know how to be completely still.
“What about Alya?”
Nino relaxes at that objection. Adrien isn’t saying that he’s not interested. “She’s on board. In fact, if you’re into it, I suspect she’d date you as well, but we didn’t talk about that.”
“And that’s allowed?” Adrien asks. His brows are furrowed so tight and it’s cute.
“I mean, if you and I are okay with it and she’s okay with it, does it matter what anyone else says?”
“I uh… guess not.”
“But there’s no pressure here either!” Nino backpedals. “My having feelings doesn’t mean anything has to change. Just because Alya and I are poly, doesn’t mean that you have to be. And you don’t have to date us both, though if you dated her and not me, I’m not gonna lie, I’d be super jealous.”
“Nino?”
“Yeah?”
“Can we slow down please?”
“You’re in love with me?” Marinette echoes. She heard it, but she can’t believe it.
Alya has coached her through the most ridiculous anxious spirals, has seen her in her bathrobe rambling with her hair in nets at her most insane, and has chastised her when she was beyond petty.
Alya has seen her at her worst.
And Alya loves her?
It’s so crazy her brain refuses to accept it.
Alya nods. “Have been for a long time. And I want you to know I’m not at all sure where you would like to go from here if anywhere, but I wanted you to know. I don’t want to keep things from you.”
But if it is true, It’s the most amazing precious thing! She woke up this morning expecting a treat, and woke up with a whole cake!
“Nino?” she squeaks.
“I love him, too. I’m poly. And I know you’re in love with Adrien. You know I’ve been rooting for the two of you since forever. Like I said, I just wanted you to know. And I guess I wanted to show you that even if you don’t get the answer you’re hoping for after a confession, that things can still be okay.”
Marinette’s grabs Alya’s arm that is already looped through hers. Alya thought she was going to say no!
But it’s too amazing. Marinette doesn’t want to say no.
“No,” Marinette says.
“No?” Alya echoes, stiffening under Marinette’s arm.
Marinette grip tightens around Alya. “No! No! I don’t mean no!! I mean– Alyaaaa!” she whines, burying her face against Alya’s arm.
Alya laughs. “I must be doing pretty well if you’ve lost the power of speech!”
Marinette nods.
And Alya untangles herself and holds Marinette by both her elbows, and suddenly Alya’s dark eyes are filling up Marinette’s entire field of vision.
“Marinette, may I kiss you?”
Marinette nods again. And now Alya’s hands ride up her arms to either side of her face, and Marinette basks in the feeling of being held in Alya’s embrace.
And then Alya’s lips are on hers, and Marinette forgets how to breathe. She’s kissed Chat before under battlefield conditions. Hell! She’s kissed Alya before! But it was never like this. Never with Alya pouring all of herself into it.
Alya is warmth and safety. And she’s fire and courage. And Marinette never wants the moment to end.
Alya pulls away first.
Marinette doesn’t want to move. This was how Adrien felt earlier. She knows it. This is what it means to be blissed out. She can’t imagine anything better.
“Now, I just want you to know, I don’t want you settling. I’m not kissing you again until you’ve confessed to Adrien.”
Marinette’s eyes blink open.
“But Alyaaaaa!”
“Can we slow down please?” Adrien asks.
“Yeah, mec! Of course! I’ll just shut up now! And you can say whatever you need to.”
Adrien laughs. Every inch of his body is buzzing. Like, he’s floating so high that his feet may never touch ground again. He has no idea what to say, but he knows he needs to say something.
“I think I’m game.”
“You think?” Nino echoes. “You don’t have to tell me what you think I want to hear.”
“And I’m not! I just— Nino, that was effectively my first kiss,” Adrien admits.
“What?! But you said–”
“I know! And I have, but it was under an akuma’s influence and I don’t remember it.”
“You could have said something.”
Adrien rubs the back of his neck. He’s not good at speaking up. Not like Nino, Alya, or Marinette. “I just… when it landed on you I felt so relieved because I knew that my first kiss was going to be with someone that I cared about and who cared about me.”
And should have that alone told him something?
Nino’s smile softens. “I’m glad.”
“And I definitely felt something, too. I wanted more, but everyone was watching. And I wasn’t sure if all kisses were like that? Because when Alya kissed me–”
“Oh my god! I know!”
“–I saw stars. But you’re saying she’s interested too? So maybe not all kisses are like that, and I’m just really lucky that the first two people I remember kissing are people that I have feelings for.”
Adrien knows he’s the one rambling, but Nino only listens.
“So umm… yeah. I’m game.” Adrien holds out his hand.
Nino stares at it. “Yeah?” Nino’s voice cracks on the word, and he has to clear his throat.
“Yeah,” Adrien says again.
Nino takes his hand, their fingers interlace and it’s wild how natural it feels, how comforting the warmth of Nino’s hand is in his own.
“I want to do what you said,” Adrien says, “explore where we could go. And it’s not just because I want to make-out! Though that sounds amazing, too!”
Nino laughs.
“But a relationship with you? That sounds like a dream. How could I ever turn that down?”
Nino’s gaze drops. “Dude! I—“ His voice cracks again.
Adrien squeezes his hand reassuringly.
But Nino stands suddenly, and yanks Adrien a meter to the side, where they’re not standing in front of a glass door.
Their second kiss is even better than the first. It leaves Adrien wanting more.
Good thing Nino is his boyfriend now and there will hopefully be so many more opportunities for more.
…
The party continues like Marinette whole world hasn’t been thrown out of orbit. The pizza arrives, her friends eat and play Just Dance and Mecha Strike. And Marinette’s losing.
Badly.
She just can’t sit still, and she can’t think long enough to finish a slice of pizza, let alone pull off the complicated combos needed to send Alix’s avatar into next week.
Marinette’s just so happy and so nervous, and her face has to be permanently stained red at this point. Everytime Alya touches her, everytime Nino laughs, everytime Adrien’s delighted smile meets her gaze, she explodes from her seat.
She grabs another slice of pizza even though she hasn’t finished the first just to have an excuse to be out of her seat, and pours a cup of soda. She backs up and bumps into a solid warm body immediately.
“Woah there!” Adrien says, his hands hovering over her arms obviously ready to catch her should she stumble.
She only sees green. The green of spring grass and emeralds.
“Marinette?” he asks, his brows furrowed in concern. “Are you okay?”
Her cheeks burn hotter. “Y-you’re fine! I mean, me! I’m fine!”
He grins back at her and she feels warm. “I’m glad.”
“A-Adrien?”
“Yeah?”
“About earlier, when I ran away?”
“Which time?”
And god, she’s run from him twice today! Could she be more of a disaster?
“I… umm… the first time.” She pushes a errant lock of hair behind her ear and licks her lips. “I wanted to explain.”
“It’s okay, Marinette. You’re allowed to not want to kiss me, you know.”
“But that’s not it at all!”
“Then what is it?”
She swallows. She’s going to do this even if she messes up every word because Alya believed in her — because of Alya could risk everything to go after what she wanted, Marinette will too. And Alya if Alya can love her at her worst, maybe Adrien can love her at her most bizarre.
“I’ve wanted to kiss you since the day we met. I just… I also wanted it to be special, you know?”
Her teeth press down into her lower lip, and she risks a glance up at him.
And suddenly she can’t breathe.
Adrien isn’t sure he heard her right.
She’s wanted to kiss him, wanted it to be special?
For that long?
He always thought he was doing something wrong, but she had just been nervous? Because she liked him?!
A laugh bubbles out of him.
Clearly the stars have aligned today.
Or at least he hopes so.
“Marinette, what do you think of the idea of loving more than one person?” he asks.
“I… I don’t totally know,” she says, biting down on her lip. “From where I’m sitting, I really really want it to be a thing.”
Oh, this day cannot get any better.
He reaches for her hand, which she takes. “Is it special enough if I kiss you now?”
Her cheeks turn a delightful shade of pink. She nods, but he’s too lost in her eyes that are shining like stars to move.
She moves first.
And he learns that he’s been wrong on several counts.
One, from his rapidly growing experience every kiss can be life changingly mind blowing.
And this particular day can and will keep getting better.
The party isn’t even close to over, but Alya asks if they want to bail early and they all agree. She lives only a few blocks away, and they probably need to spend some time, just the four of them together.
Today has been a lot.
But definitely the best kind of a lot, she thinks as they all four walk side by side. Adrien and Marinette are in the middle, their fingers just barely touching, but still interlaced. Nino is on Adrien’s other side, and her boyfriend cannot stop smiling.
Alya has seen Nino excited and giddy when listening to a song. She’s seen him silly and flustered after she kissed him for the first time, but she’s never seen him quite like this, beaming like he just won the lottery.
She’s never seen Marinette so calm and relaxed. She’s so glad that Marientte finally managed to confess, and she’s beyond touched that it was her own confession that finally goaded Marinette into action.
And she’s never seen Adrien so real. He’s joking and being silly, and just laughing. It’s a gorgeous sound.
And she’s so happy for herself, too. That she doesn’t have to fantasize and wonder, she doesn’t have to settle.
She gets to have all of this. All of them.
She thought a day like this could never happen.
“Alya! What’s wrong?”
Alya shakes her head, dabbing at her eyes.
“I’m just happy.”
Marinette beams at her.
“I know! I don’t think I’ve ever felt so… loved.”
Nino laughs. “It looks good on you.”
It looked good on all of them.
Because it’s perfect.
Right up until Alya has to let go of Marinette’s hand to unlock the front door. And instead of cuddling right back up to Marinette like she wants to, she ducks into the apartment trying to see if anyone is home.
While she has no intention of keeping her unconventional relationship a secret, she prefers the chance to talk to all her partners for at least one whole conversation before she has to explain it to anyone else.
Luckily, the whole place is dark.
“Looks like we have the place to ourselves! Make yourselves at home! I’ll get drinks! Adrien, want to help me?”
“Of course!” he agrees, his and Marinette’s hands slowly untangling, until they can’t reach as they part ways.
“Why Adrien?” Marinette pouts.
Alya laughs. “Because I need to talk to him! We’ll be out in two minutes.”
He follows her into the kitchen. “What’s up?”
“I just wanted to tell you all the reasons I kissed you today now that I’m not revealing any secrets.”
He grins. “Please go on.”
She hands him two cans of soda from the fridge.
“One, I wanted to drive Nino nuts, but I swear in a good way.”
Adrien laughs.
“Two, I wanted to show Marinette that it wasn’t that hard. And that things could still be okay after the fact.”
“Better than okay!” he adds.
“Three, you are hot and I’m not blind.” She grabs another two cans of soda.
He laughs again, and Alya really likes the sound. She looks right up at him.
“And last, you were hurting earlier when Marinette ran, and I don’t know… I wanted you to know what it was like to be wanted.”
“I…” he visibly swallows. “I don’t know what to say. Thank you.”
She grins. “You're welcome! Now, come on!”
Alya freezes in the threshold.
Nino has a hand on Marinette’s shoulder. He throws a silly grin at her and she sucks in a breath. He knows exactly what he’s doing.
“So I don’t know how you feel about me compared to them,” Nino says to Marinette.
Marinette blushes, and glances toward Alya who is staring at them both, still unmoving.
“But I have it on good authority that if we kissed, it would drive Alya wild,” Nino stage whispers.
Adrien chokes on a laugh from behind her.
Marinette nods enthusiastically. “She would deserve it after knowingly torturing us all day!”
They turn towards each other. Marinette has to stand on her toes, and Nino leans down, and their lips meet.
Alya’s throat feels dry.
Adrien whistles in clear approval, and then the three of them dissolve into giggles.
But Alya has to swallow several times before she finds her voice. “Not gonna lie. I have thought about this before and I didn’t think it would ever happen.”
Marinette holds her hand out, and Alya lets herself be pulled into their embrace. Adrien is only a few seconds behind.
“Does it live up to your fantasies?” Marinette asks.
“It’s even better. All thanks to Spin the Bottle! We’re gonna have to thank Kim for pushing it.”
“And to think, Marinette didn’t think a Spin the Bottle kiss could be special,” Adrien teases.
“Shut up!” she protests, her cheeks turning pink. Alya kisses the closest one.
“Spin the Bottle kisses can obviously be life changing,” Nino says, his fingers threading through hers.
“Did Marinette just tell Adrien to shut up?” Alya asks. “Maybe?” Marinette squeaks.
Alya grins. “I’m so proud.”
Bonus:
Adrien’s never been this comfortable in his whole life. It’s almost overwhelming. Marinette’s head lay in his lap, while he leaned on Nino’s shoulder with Alya on Nino’s other side. He’s not sure how they got here all together like this, but he’s never going to let go now.
“So are we exclusive?” Marinette asks, her fingers tracing patterns on the back of his hand.
“Why do you ask?” Alya grins, clearly amused.
“I just kinda wanted to see if I could add Chat Noir.”
Adrien chokes. “Ch-Chat Noir?” he splutters.
“What? Is that crazy?” Marinette asks.
“He does look hot in that catsuit.” Nino comments and Adrien’s ears burn.
“I’m down for Chat Noir, Ladybug, and Carapace,” Alya interjects.
Marinette glares at her. “I think you’re forgetting someone.”
“Who?”
“Rena Rouge!”
“Oh! Yeah, sure,” she agrees readily.
They all turn to him expectantly, and Adrien doesn’t know what to say. It sounds amazing and it sounds like way too much, and it also seems impossible. “What are the chances all four of them would be down for that?”
Marinette glances at Alya and Nino before her gaze flips back to him. “Higher than you might think.”

MLB Rewrite: Origins prt. 1 &2
Note- I'm using (POV) to mention who the 'camera' is following for the most part. Also I skim over things that happen nearly the same as in cannon.
Hawkmoth Re-design
Origins Part 1
(Hawkmoths POV)
Starts the same with Nooroo explaining the miraculous and Hawkmoth’s first transformation, though we wouldn’t see him outside of his hands.  As the butterflies crowd him to transform a scream of pain rings from his throat.
(Fu’s POV)
Like before, Wayzz fills Master Fu in on the butterfly being active.  But I’m gonna pull from the movie's idea of letting Tikki and Plagg choose their own wielders.  Fu does bring them to the school though with the intent of choosing a young initiate.
(Marinette’s POV)
Marinette is 16 years old, this is her Junior year.
Marinette meanwhile has had a day of it.  Working herself up over everything she might need for her first day and nearly being late after reorganizing her bag for the 4th time that morning.  Finally, Sabine dragged her downstairs and Tom gave her the macarons.
(Adrien’s POV)
Adrien is also 16 at the moment.
Boy is forever trying to get educated but gets caught by Nathalie.
(Fu’s POV)
Master Fu briefly loses Plagg before seeing a black cat sitting on the back of Adrien’s car as it drives away.  Since he saw Adiren get in, and the boy’s face is all over Paris, he knows who his Cat is.
Marinette still saves Fu’s life as he had run into traffic looking for Plagg and paused in the middle of the road after seeing him.  Tikki jumps into Marinette’s bag while she’s picking up the macarons.
Content Fu heads home.
(Marinette's POV)
Chloe basically just says “Switch.”  And Marinette decides it honestly is not worth the hustle and does.  Alya introduces herself and berates Chloe’s actions to which Marinette shrugs and says, “I don’t really care, she probably has a reason.”
“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil, is for good people to do nothing.”
“A nice rule, but remember you can’t judge someone evil based on their first impression.  You never know what they could be going through.”
(Adrein’s POV)
It fades to Adrien being told his father is busy and can’t scold him right now.  Once Adrien goes back to his room he finds a cat sitting on his table, confused he tries to approach it but the animal just bounds away.  But on the table still, is a ring box.
(Ivan’s POV)
Que Kim and Ivan’s argument.  A black butterfly lands on the crumpled up paper.  All that we see or hear is the mask appearing on Ivan’s face and Hawkmoth's voice.  “Stoneheart, I am Hawkmoth.  You feel unsupported, and unseen.  Allow me to harden your heart and take that pain away.”
(Adrein’s POV)
Adrien is observing the ring when a quiet meow is heard behind him.  The cat is balanced in the back of his couch and looks between the ring and Adrien.
“You want me to put it on?”  He asks and gets a purr in return.   He does and there is a flash of light.
(Marinette’s POV)
Worrying herself to death over Alya chasing the monster, but too scared to follow her.  Marinette finds a box that had fallen out of her bag.  A ladybug lands on the box.
“Bug Mouse!”  And the cup things.
As Tikki explains, Marinette is working herself into a fit.  She’s terrified, but Tikki assures her that very little harm can come to her in the suit.  That she’ll have a partner to help her, and that it will give her a chance to protect Alya.  Unwilling to not even try when an innocent person is being puppeteered by an evil asshole she agrees.
Ladybug Re-design
Chat Noir Re-design
Key Power differences:
Ladybug:
Lucky Charm is specifically stated to give you a solution, not just an object.  The object is only to point you in the right direction.
Purification allows her to cleanse the akuma.
Miracle Cure allows the world to heal from and injuries caused by a miraculous  (Only Physical Damage) "Miraculous *Insert Name*"
Cat:
Cataclysm can either turn an object to dust or cause it to stop functioning.
Purgation destroys the dark energy in an akuma
Miracle Purge allows the world to burn out any effects a miraculous had on a person (Only works on Non Physical Effects) "Miraculous *insert Name*"
(Marientte’s POV)
They meet about the same way as cannon.  The fight up to a point is pretty similar, except Marinette is very thinly veiling her utter panic with humor.  Chat picks up on this and starts cracking jokes to help put her at ease.
After breaking the akumatized object they part ways, but the butterfly goes “Oops, bye bitch.”
Tikki’s like- “So you got the akuma right?  Right?”
“I can’t do this Tikki, I couldn’t even listen long enough to know what my one job was.  There are two many bad things that could happen, and all I can think about is how I can continue to mess things up in the future.  Paris doesn't need a Ladybug who can’t trust herself.  You deserve better.”
She removes the earrings and puts them back in the box.
Marinette goes to sleep with plans to give up the miraculous to Alya in the morning.
The akuma is targeting people who had been rejected or feel unseen, turning them to stone more medusa style statues than Stoneheart’s golem influences.
Marinette wakes up late that night to the miraculous in its box buzzing, asking to be let out.
She goes to beg Tikki to please choose someone else.  Except when she picks up the box the earrings shoot from the box.  It leads her down and out of the house.  To a stone woman frozen in misery.
Marinette can’t stand to see someone suffering like this and tells herself she’ll do what she can to help until either Stoneheart is defeated or she can hand the miraculous off to Alya.
Origins Part 2.
In the morning, Marinette finally returns home to get ready for school.  She was up all night finding every akuma still loose and catching it.  She tells her parents she just went for an early morning run (technically true) and is okay, she is late for school though.
On TV she see’s Ivan has once again been re-akumatized, after trying to read Mylene his poem when they both got to school.  Knowing Alya will be chasing the akuma Marinette chugs some coffee and chases him too.
When Alya gets trapped Chat Noir is captured, same as cannon, she decides to be Ladybug just a little longer.
(Though she finds a hiding place first, gosh cannon Alya was like 20 feet away)
As Ladybug chases down Stoneheart she catches Chloe after she is thrown from the Eiffel tower.
Hawkmoth does not do the floating head thing.  Instead Stoneheart mentions that the butterfly that made him strong wants the miraculous.
Officer Raimcomprix tells Chat Noir that they’ve already failed one.
Chat Noir scoffs.  “No shit.  We’re two teenagers in spandex.  Of course we're gonna make mistakes.  But you don’t really have a choice but to trust us.  Because you can’t beat this thing, and we can.”
He turns to face Stoneheart.
“I know you can hear me, you’ll be looking through his eyes right?  Well listen up little Papillion.  I don’t know what you want, what drove you to this.  But I'll give you a bit of a friendly tip, you messed up.  Because you chose to prey on an innocent teenager, tried to force him to nearly kill Chloe Bourgeois, and attacked the girl he loves.  You’ve definitely made a mistake, bigger than either of ours.  Because you honestly thought that we would roll over and let you get away with it.”
Ladybug, in awe of her partner's confidence even in the face of failure, starts planning how to take out Stoneheart.
They do the kiss thing and both teens are rescued safely.  Ladybug catches the akuma and uses the Miracle Cure to fix the damage and bring the stone people back to themselves.
Chat asks to meet with Ladybug to talk about their new jobs later that night.
When Marinette arrives back at school she meets Adrien.  Because Nathalie is awesome.
+x+
“So you’re the rival Chloe’s told me so much about?”
Marinette floundered a little at the son of her favorite fashion designer, and a supermodel in his own right, stuck his hand out.  “A- Adrien.  You’re Adrien Agreste.”
He winced a little.  “Yeah that’s me.”
Somehow the girl managed to snap herself out of the stupor enough to shake the boy's hand.
“Adrikins,”  Chloe called.  “Come on, I need to show you around before class starts.”
Marinette was in a daze all the way back to Mme. Bustiers class.  She just met Adrien Agreste, the Adrien Agreste.  And she was a total spaz about it.
She sat down in her seat and placed her head on the desk.
She didn’t remember the seat change until Chloe reemerged with her friends in tow.
“Move.”  She told Marinette.
Marinette really didn’t want to do that.  She didn’t want to be next to Adrien where she could potentially embarrass herself more.  If he told his father about the mess of a girl in his class her dreams would be crushed before they even got off the ground.
(It is of course bold of Mari to assume Adrien’s father speaks to his son.)
Maybe- maybe if she was going to stand up for herself as Ladybug, at least until she found a better candidate, then starting as Marinette would help.
“No.”  She said plainly.  “It’s my seat, and I don’t really want to.”
She clenched her hands into her jeans as Chloe raised an eyebrow.
“Whatever.  This isn’t worth my time.”  Chloe sighed like she had just wasted precious hours on that interaction.
Marinette let out a breath she hadn’t known she was holding.
Alya slid into the seat next to her and grinned triumphantly.  “Nice job girl.”
Marinette smiled back, but it was shaky.  She hadn’t slept last night and was really starting to feel it.
“So girl, check this out.”  Alya held up her phone.
On it was a blog template with red and black spots covering it.
“The Ladyblog?”  Marinette read the title at the top.
Alya practically squealed in excitement.  “Isn’t it cool?  Since your’s truly got the best footage on the attack I thought I’d start my own blog.  The one stop spot for everything Ladybug.”
“What about Chat Noir?”  Marinette mused.  “He’s super cool, Ladybug just kinda fumbles around after him.”
“Don’t be like that.”  Alya pushed the girl’s shoulder.  “Ladybug was the one to come up with the plan to save the day both times.  And she saved me today.”
Marinette wished she could point out that Chat Noir had saved Alya twice, but that would reveal that she was there.
“But you are right, I need to think up something good for Chat Noir.”  Alya leaned back.
+x+
(Adrien POV)
Vibing, waiting for the car.  Marinette comes outside and waits too.
Adrien’s like, “Hey.”
And Marinette apologizes for being a spaz.  Explaining that she was just caught off guard and that she didn’t mean to make him uncomfortable.
Adrien explains that he’s pretty used to it, and laments that no matter where he goes people will always know him before ever speaking to him.
“I almost don’t even know how to act in public.  I wanna make friends but- I feel like people will only ever see the boy on the posters.  …  Sorry, that’s kind of a lot to dump on a stranger.”
Marinette paused.  “You shouldn’t have to deal with that.  I can’t change the fact that people know who you are.  But we are still kind strangers.  So- Hi, I’m Marinette Dupain-Cheng.”
He chuckles at her outstretched hand.  “Hello, I’m Adrien Agreste.”  He shakes her hand and smiles.
“So, you’re new to the school?  What do you think of Mme. Bustier?”
(Fu’s POV)
He watches on as Ladybug and Chat Noir meet each other for the first time, again.  Making idle small talk until the same car from before arrives to take Adrien home.
Before getting in the teen hands Marinette his umbrella with a parting goodbye.
Wayzz asks if he came to check in because he questioned Tikki and Plagg’s choice.
Fu admits that he was worried, but he needn’t be.  Those two will help each other, in and out of the mask.  They’ll be okay.
(Ladybug’s POV)
Ladybug meets Chat at the Eiffel tower.
She tells him how much his words of confidence helped her, since she had been so upset about her failure she forgot that mistakes are not the end of everything.  So long as you try and fix them.
She confides that she’s still considering giving up the Ladybug miraculous, since she’s worried her catastrophizing will cause her to be overwhelmed and fail.
“Well m’ lady.  I know a thing or two about Cat-astrophizing.  And if you promise not to give up just yet, then I promise to help keep you from spiraling.  Deal?”
She agrees to keep trying.
END
Okay let's get into the details.
1. Hawkmoth's transformation hurts like a bitch. His head is full on splitting open to make way for the butterfly wings, that's part of his face. He's spending most of his time lying on the floor in too much pain to move until Ivan get's akumatized.
2. Marinette will have the first suit design, with the plain suit and boots. Chat Noir will also have his first design, but his is a bit more interesting than LB's since Adrien has a little more faith in himself.
3. Since I'm overhauling Chloe's personality there was no reason for the gum incident, so I just dropped it all together. There would have been 0 purpose. Instead their rough start is caused by Marinette having a fairly normal reaction to meeting a super model who is also your idol's son. She does feel bad about it later, but Adrien harbored no ill will.
4. Around here is when the crush starts developing, but it's just that. A crush, she has the vague idea that she might like Adrien, but she doesn't know him super well yet.
5. Fu, you bastard. He really does think choosing two legal children is a good idea. I'll partially blame the Order of Guardians, but he knew what he was doing. Children are more likely to believe that they are just "The Chosen Ones" and not question anything, or wonder gave them the miraculous. Tikki and Plagg actually don't like that they had to choose two teenagers, but they aren't going to take that out on the kids. Fu's probably gonna get hot sauce in his tea curtesy of Wayzz for pulling that though.

33+50, gabenath? I love these fics so much, whenever I see one no matter what it's about I get excited to read it because of how much I love your writing. Keep up the great work <3
"Alright sir," Nathalie pushes her chair away from her desk, reaching for her phone, "That's-"
“You done for the day.” He keeps his eyes firmly on his screen. He won’t betray his weakness to her. “I’m aware. You don’t have to keep announcing how delighted you are to be away from me.”
“I was just being polite sir. Letting you know I wouldn’t be around for anything else you needed.”
He can’t help looking up as he scoffs. “Oh come off it Nathalie. You haven’t ‘just been polite’ to me ever since you decided you hated me.”
Her hand frozen above her phone since his interruption moves back to her side and she straightens up. “I wouldn’t describe it as decided to. Personally if we were going to use the word decided then I’d call it the time when you decided to disappoint me more than I ever thought you’d were able to do.”
Anger surges up his throat like acid, and were it any softer his grip on his stylus would break it. “You don’t have to stay you know.”
“You know why I stay,” her voice is quiet but firm and this time she picks up her phone and puts it in her pocket as if she plans to leave.
“Because you don’t trust me with my son. Or to understand that I failed. That I lost. That the only reason I’m not infamous right now is because some teenage girl thinks she loves my son. And that I’m stupid enough to try again.”
“That’s not the only stupid thing I worry about you doing?”
“What does that mean?”
“Maybe you should think about it,” she pushes her chair in with a final movement and turns and-
“Nathalie,” he doesn’t know when he reached out for her but there his hand is extended in front of him, the stylus on the floor.
She’s stopped, frowning, she almost looks worried though he won’t delude himself it’s for him.
“We need talk,” he says.
She inhales, then, “alright.”
“I’m not going to do anything stupid.” He pauses, but she doesn’t take the obvious bait and somewhat gratified he continues, “and you know Adrien will tell Ladybug if I do anything to him.”
“I don’t actually.”
Her tone is light, but he can hear the strain hiding behind. He’s not good at recognising emotions. Not without his Miraculous. Maybe not even with his Miraculous. But Emilie had used to do thatback when she was getting sicker and sicker. She’d done it enough times to burn that fake unconcern into his eardrums, and so he can recognise it now.
“Oh for-“
“I’m not blaming you actually. Or- I guess I am, but I’m to blame too and Emilie. Adrien,” she sighs, “Adrien doesn’t really know how things should be. Or when something goes past the awkwardness that would be expected in these circumstances to-“
“Adrien wants to move out.”
Her eyes widen, just a little, for a moment. “Adrien’s 15.”
“I’m aware,” he grits out, “but as he points out I was willing to send him to London. And on a world tour.”
“I was supposed to be with him on that.”
“If I don’t let him go he’ll run.”
Nathalie presses her lips together. “Where’s he want to go?”
“Where do you think,” he scoffs, “his lady’s.”
“That seems…unwise. I thought they were still on the outs.”
“Apparently they’ve made up,” then it hits him, “he hasn’t said any of this to you?”
Odd that. For Adrien to tell him and not Nathalie.
“I know my and Adrien’s relationship must seem undamaged to you,” Nathalie says, “but that’s because we had months to make up while you were, er-“
“Dead?”
Her nods tightly. “So. I was still Mayura. I countermanded you but I didn’t give him the rings. I don’t know that he truly trusts me yet. But then, I might be overthinking it.”
“How so?”
“Adrien doesn’t like disappointing people. He might not have told me because he knows I’d disapprove. And because he doesn’t want the argument. Easier to get you to present it as a fait accompli, and after all you are his father. If you’ve signed off on it then…”
Gabriel marvels, “I never thought Adrien was that sly.”
“He was Chat Noir beneath our noses all that time.” Her shoulder shifts in what could almost be a shrug, “and like I said, a lot of it is him being non-confrontational I think.”
“Chat Noir is plenty confrontational.”
“He’s finds it easier behind a mask. He’s like you that way.”
Something in her presumption making that comparison like she knows him grates at him, makes him want to get under her skin too, to prove she doesn’t know him as well as she thinks.
“I don’t think I was that different as Gabriel or Monarch near the end.”
“No.” And her lips purse again, “You weren’t.”
He draws his hands behind his back, reminded as he is every time he does it of his bare ring finger, “the thing is Nathalie, with Adrien leaving there’s no need for you to stay. You can go.”
She cocks her head, “are you threatening to fire me?”
“Threatening you? I’m giving you an out. I know you hate me. I know you want nothing more than never see me again. That- to you that mistake I made for unforgivable. And I’m telling you that you can go. That I’m not going to do anything stupid. I know I’m beaten, and soon Adrien is going to be out of my reach. You can leave Nathalie. Go back to your old profession and-“
“Stop!”
“What?”
Her shoulders rise and fall and then she strides over to him, “Gabriel Agreste, do you think I can just go back to my old work? When I’ve been your personal assistant for years and years and what I did was illegal before that, and-“
“Alright,” it’s his turn to interrupt her because he is so so tired of hearing this, “I ruined your life just like I ruined Emilie’s and I’ve ruined Adrien’s. I get it. I’m a terrible person. I’m so unlovable my son wishes I wasn’t his father, my one time best friend only stays because she feels she has to guard me as atonement or something, and my wife would hate me if she could see me. I get it. And I don’t need you here reinforcing that every day and making us both miserable when- mumph!”
Her hand on his mouth abruptly stops his speech.
Despite the fact they’re still her human aquamarine it feels like he’s looking into Mayura’s eyes not Nathalie’s. There’s an intensity to them that freezes him like a gorgon making it impossible to fight back.
Not that Nathalie probably wouldn’t win anyway despite his greater reach. He knows she still trains, relishing that she’s healthy enough to do so again.
“Gabriel Agreste.” She hisses out his name, “you are an idiot.”
He’s about to lick her hand in retaliation for that when-
“How dare you care yourself unloveable to my face when I’ve loved you for years?!”
His lips part in shock against her hand and she pulls it away again looking ready for a fight despite her confession.
“But you hate me?”
Nathalie looks frankly unimpressed. He can’t blame her, he hadn’t meant to say something that sounded that unintelligent.
“Love can’t just be extinguished in one moment. Not that you didn’t give it a good try afterwards, but then,” he sees the movement of her throat as she swallows and, “you died. And you know it wouldn’t have hurt so much when you failed me if I hadn’t loved you so much in the first place. But you know that much. I suppose that now you don’t have your Miraculous-”
“I didn’t actually.”
“What?”
“Know.”
“But- your Miraculous.”
“I didn’t realise it was love,” he pinches at the bridge of his nose, “we know that Miraculous didn’t suit me. Or maybe I was deluding myself. But- you still…”
She nods tightly.
“Ah.”
“Quite.” Nathalie says, “So maybe you’re right. Maybe I should go.”
“I-“ can’t let you leave now you’ve just said that, but he can’t say he loves her back either- not yet anyway,“if you think that’s best.”
“What I think best is for Adrien not to move in with the family of the teenage girlfriend he still wasn’t worked out all his issues we. So. Yes, I’ll move out. But I’m taking him with me.”
That’s- “that’s a much better plan. Yes, find somewhere suitable for the two of you and I’ll pay.”
“You don’t-“
“He’s my son.”
“Alright.” She relaxes, “I’m not sure about the job. I don’t like the idea of leaving you alone.”
“I told you. I won’t do anything stupid.”

He can feel his shoulders slump. “I suppose you have me there. But then we haven’t spoken about anything but work or Adrien since I came back either.”
“No. We haven’t. I guess I have been punishing you.”
“It worked.”
“It’s doesn’t feel as satisfying as I expected.”
“You know,” he muses, “there’d have to be a transition, you couldn’t just leave your job immediately.”
“That’s true.”
“That’s time for me to do better. If you can think of anyone who’d want to be around me.”
“Harry’s always been pretty forgiving of your moods.”
“That’s true. And perhaps there’s someone else who might like to spend some time with me socially. Once she’s no longer working for and living with me.”
For once the amusement “Me?”
“You don’t have to. But perhaps we could go out for dinner? Visit a museum and you can explain everything to me?”
Her lips curve up, “that sounds like a date.”
“It was meant to.”
“You’re sure?”
“I am. ”
“Then- yes.
