‘Portrait of Anatoly Lunacharsky’ by Nicholai Fechin (1881-1955). Ukrainian born Lunacharsky (1875-1933) was a Russian Marxist revolutionary from circa 1899 who was regularly dodging the Russian authorities whilst organising an underground Bolshevism. Later when the Soviets gained power he became a commissar. He was concerned with art, culture, and education. He was a prolific essayist and his most famous book is ‘Revolutionary Silhouettes’ which passes the Amazon test-that is it is available in an English translation albeit one published in 1967.
