#no justice in this world
Text
Two Illinois cousins who have spent most of their lives locked up for crimes they never committed walked free Thursday after 42 years behind bars – the latest in a series of exonerations this week involving innocent people wrongfully imprisoned for decades.
James Soto, 62, and David Ayala, 60, will now spend the holidays with their families for the first time since 1981 – when they were convicted for the deaths of two Chicago teenagers.
The cousins each received two life sentences without the possibility of parole for the killings, plus 30 years for attempted murder and seven years for conspiracy to commit murder, to be served concurrently.
The pair ultimately served the longest wrongful conviction sentence in state history, said Lauren Myerscough-Mueller, an attorney with the Exoneration Project, which provides legal representation to the wrongfully convicted. [...]

Justice was not served today…When the sweetest/most kind/ gentle peeps are sent to prison, yet those who plot and scheme with nothing but poison on their lips walk free. I’d mos def say something is wrong with our system. I watched a Woman/daughter/sister/mother/best friend get sent away today by the man she once called husband/lover/friend/ & made a father. Due to his actions 3 beautiful babies aren’t gonna see their mom for 30 f*cking days. A grandmother and grandfather has to tell their grandkids mom isn’t coming home and tell them that for 30 days. My rage over this case is about to make me boil over. I love you best friend and worry not focus on being strong these days are gonna fly by. The little ones will have a tribe to give them all the love/care they can stand 💖

July 30, 1922 Abie by Harry Hershfield
Real 1922 Problems: Getting thrown out of a movie theatre because you didn't conform to its fancy dress code.
TOP PANEL [ID: Abe stands in front of a sign outside a building with marble entryway arches, wiping his sweaty brow with a handkerchief as he reads it under the glare of the direct sun. The sign reads, "30 Degrees Cooler Inside Than on the Street." /end] Abe: That ain't such a bargain. I can go to the place across the street and get 40.
MAIN COMIC [ID: Abe is literally shoved out the entraince of the Elite Theatre by an usher. Abe's suit jacket is tucked in the crook of his right arm and he carries a straw hat in his left. /end] Usher: Get out. And stay out! Abe: I'll sue you in court for this!
[ID: Abe talks to a lawyer in their office. The two men sit facing each other in armchairs. Abe's lawyer smokes a cigar. /end] Lawyer: Certainly. You've got a good case against the Elite Theatre, Abe! Abe: Then I'll sue him in court right away!
[ID: Abe stands up from the bench seats in a courtroom and takes his suit jacket off. /end] Abe: Oy, is it hot here in court! It's packed here with people. It'll maybe be hours before my case is called! I'll take off mine coat!
[ID: Abe rushes up to the judge's bench. /end] Judge: Abe Kabibble vs. Elite Theatre! Abe: Yes, your honor!
[ID: The judge angrily points at a nervous Abe. /end] Judge: How dare you stand here in court with your coat off! Do you think this is a barroom. How dare you!!!
[ID: Abe fumes in front of the judge, who impatiently crosses his arms. /end] Judge: Why did the Elite Theatre throw you out?? Abe: For sitting in there with my coat off!!
[ID: The judge tells Abe off as Abe frustratedly walks away. /end] Judge: Case dismissed!!! You deserve to be thrown out. And if there was any legal way to put you in jail for it, I would, believe me!!!!
[ID: Abe stands in the street outside the courthouse and hails a streetcar. /end] Abe [thinking]: There ain't no JUSTICE, that's all. Ebsolutel none!!!
[ID: Abe agitatedly complains about his day to the man sitting next to him on the streetcar. While he's occupied, a tramp sitting behind him eyes his jacket, lying on the back of the seat. /end] Abe: When you'll hear, you'll agree with me. I say there ain't no justice in this world!! Passenger: You said a mouthful!
[ID: The tramp walks off with Abe's jacket as he goes on. /end] Abe: Ebsolutel no justice and I'll show you why!
[ID: Abe turns around and is shocked to discover his jacket gone. /end] Abe: Oy. It's gone!! Mine coat. It's gone!!!!
[ID: Abe walks down the sidewalk, upwind against a heavy gust that chills him to the bone. He clutches a newspaper to his chest, shivering as he goes. /end] Abe [thinking]: ...and all of a suddenly, it has to get chilly in summer. Noo, is there justice???

Is the new Persuasion movie bad? I know nothing about it other than it popped up in my Netflix recommended section, but there’s something about that gifset you reblogged that makes me feel like it might be… bad.
I...listen. I have only seen the trailer, and will not be watching the film, and while I typically don't endorse the stance of passing judgment on something I have not watched...I'm gonna call it bad.
Like, I don't think the fault will be with the performances. I mean, tumblr loves Dakota Johnson and I mean I don't dislike her I just haven't watched much of her stuff. But it's like...the creative team saw what a success the 2020 Emma adaptation was, and so it tried to capitalize off of it by making another, because Jane Austen = that kind of adaptation right? WRONGGGGG
Persuasion and Emma are completely different novels, with completely different heroines and worlds built around those heroines. The bright, Baroque, witty opulence of Emma, with it's coy heroine and bubbly settings doesn't fit the energy of Persuasion.
Persuasion is not a happy-go-lucky romcom like Emma (I mean, Emma isn't ultimately happy go lucky, she undergoes a significant amount of growth and despair and change, but there's still an undercurrent of lightness to it. Emma is young, and rich, and, as the novel starts out, has gone through life with very little to distress or vex her). Persuasion begins after the romance ends, it looks in on a woman whose youth and life and love have passed her by, and she's sad and alone and angry at herself for having let it. Then, the love she let go of years ago comes back into her life and the pain of it is so excruciating, but she has to smile and deal and pretend like all is well, because that's what women have to do. and it isn't until the FINAL PAGES does she realize that he has been aching for her as much as she has been aching for him. it's the deep, powerful romance of a second chance that permeates Austen's works kicked up to like a billion. and the emotional payoff of The Letter only packs such a punch because it comes after a novel of the anguish of lost chances.
this adaptation shies away from that melancholy, and packs it into pithy fourth-wall breaking witticisms, trying to fit the complicated and unique Anne Eliot into a mold that belongs better to Emma Woodhouse. they aren't the same, nor should they be!
Ultimately, I think when something is made with love, it shows. The recent Emma and Little Women films were clearly made with deep affection and understanding of the stories and their heroines, you can feel it in the shots and in the performances. But this new Persuasion feels like it was written by a bunch of cynics who hate the art of the period drama and write off Austen as that annoying writer they had to read in high school, and the nerds who like These Movies will just be happy to get a film. Like, I don't know, I feel that there's a dislike for the original novel running through the writing I witnessed in the trailer and in gifsets.
hey, by all means, if you want to watch and then make up your own opinion, go for it. but I'll pass on this one.
and. okay. like that gifset you reference, I'm a music snob, it's part and parcel with the music degree, and so I haaaaaaaate when a period piece tries to be Clever with a musical reference of the period and misses the mark so spectacularly.

Take a good look at the countries leading/have started the legal battles to hold the IOF accountable -their fights to end IOF terrorism and war crimes, as this should have been done months ago, are now beginning.
So many Palestinian people have been genocided, and the rampant global government inaction has caused chaos, death, and destruction of Gaza... I just hope this leads to a permanent ceasefire and an end to the occupation. I truly do.
